To me that is the perfect build, you can do 10 Radiance for signet reduction until you are comfortable. Once you have 500 hours at 80 and you want to try something more fancy/fun/whatever, you’ll have a very solid idea of what you want and don’t want. I don’t know what Cavalier is but I don’t use it, and I don’t care for Berserkers. I’d run Cleric’s for anything challenging and Knight’s for everything else (with a crit sigil, preferably Fire). For running around Orr solo, use Mace Torch, good balance of life and damage.
Beyond the 3k health from traits, I really don’t see the reason for anymore. Did you know that heal on dodge has a 1:1 scaling (329 base)? At 1k healing power, my dodge heals (aoe) for 1,329. That means, every time I dodge I basically give myself +133 vitality. Compare that to regular vitality from PVT. The only people who say HP doesn’t scale well on Guardians are people that are clueless. AH only scales at 1%, however regen scales at 12.5%, dodge 100%, virtue tick 6%, writ 10% (?), healing signet 125%, etc.
Power is what makes you hit hard. Remember that mace and hammer symbols are up near constantly and tick every second and can crit (yay Vigor). IMO 2h weapon spec is only for increasing staff swiftness uptime or going underwater. Unless you really need that shout cd (play to actually see if you do), try larger symbols (more boons and more dmg). I also love symbol duration, I switch it out but almost always come back. Try III, VII, VIII. Note that I didn’t choose these traits randomly or on “feel”; I’ve maximized synergy. Larger symbols? More damage and more allies get buffs (ding AH). Longer symbols? Same (ding AH). EM? Buff group dps via boons (ding AH).
In PvE (and pvp too I believe, but I play my mesmer in pvp), the Guardian is a landlord. You are the encounter’s anchor – the fight will center on you. If the group wants heals and buffs, they can come close (which buffs? Might , regen, stability, etc.? You pick them depending on the encounter). If they need some breathing room, they can run away. If they have AoE ,you are their new best friend.
My warrior can hit the CoF 1 Slave Driver for 21k+ in a single 100b. His axe auto attacks hit for nearly 3k. If you want damage, make a warrior. The Guardian’s toolbox is about area control and making your buddies better – and hey why not add a high dmg 6s blast finisher amirite ;D

Please remove the activation of the Staff 2 ability. This bugs out FAR too often (stays on the 2nd icon and will not reset to the 1st until the 2nd icon is activated) which randomly puts a 12s cd on a key ability. The activation is a cute idea but is impractical – I’ve done everything in the game many times and I’ve only activated Staff 2 when I need to un-bug it and get the original ability back.
Please just make it the one ability and not a chain!!!
PS Making the Orb from Staff 2 heal, wow, <3 <3 <3
Love you,
Xynn
Here is all you need to do to be six sigma safe:
1. Pick 4 random words (dictionary, thesaurus, 1 word from 4 different websites, whatever). Then pick 2 single digit numbers (e.g. 14).
2. Type this password out in a Word document. Save the document.
3. Turn auto-login ON.
4. When you log in, copy/paste your password into the box.
Now keyloggers are useless to steal your password.
Robert’s problem is that he doesn’t understand congruity. If the dungeons should all be very hard, then you need to get a good reward; 180 tokens for a full clear when you need over 2k to get armor and a couple weapons does not provide any incentive. It’s far easier to just farm money and craft them or buy crafted. If they should be hard, then let the player pick 1 item from the vendor after completing all 3 paths (not 1 path 3 times, all 3 paths) – for example, path 1 gives token A, 2 gives B, 3 gives C, and if you trade in ABC you get 1 item.
I am tremendously disappointed in Robert’s grasp of pve content and the players’ perspective; I would strongly prefer to see him replaced if this game wants to go further.

That’s really nice of you guys to address a broad player base.
Another thing, necros have bad combo fields and finishers. Few blast finishers (um…bone minions lol?), and bad uptime on the majority of their fields. They don’t have to be ele-level, but rangers have 50% uptime on water, guardians nearly 100% uptime on light, eles 70%+ uptime on fire (or some other field), etc.
If Axe 2 was a Whirl finisher and Axe 3 + Dagger 3 were blast finishers, and maybe even make Scepter 2 a dark field, now they are starting to look a little intimidating and more useful in groups.
I could see it work in small scale, but I have spent many moons cursing that spell when it was large group v. group in the typical standoff distance and I risked my little Asuran butt to run close enough to Grasp only to see one of the many fail messages. To me, Spectral Grasp is like Fredo to Michael in the Godfather p2, I love it but it has broken my heart too many times, and now it has to go.
Have mesmers talent feedback and focus. On eles, have mesmers Curtain and then Pull, then cast Warden. Feedback boss while you are killing eles (so you only have to worry about the eles). Mesmer GS is excellent at breaking the rock shield. Melee is minimally useful against Shaman because of his dive, you’d have to be very good at not getting hit (1 hit down) and even if you are good, if someone tries to revive you the boss can do his move again and now there’s 2 people down. You will basically have to use staff exclusively. Keep bleeds up on boss since bleeds break his shield quickly. Cripple the boss when he shields to prevent him from getting hostages. To me, handling this fight with the group you have should be extremely easy given all the reflection, the blinds, etc. If you keep having problems with it, message me ingame and I’ll come run with you to see what’s up.
For necro, I think Spectral Wall would be good (protection / vuln v. eles), The poison cloud thing (Corrupted something?) to weakness them, the blind well, life transfer, warhorn stun, would all be useful.
Spectral Grasp is, in large part, terrible in actual WvW. If anyone says otherwise, I question whether they WvW. It can make some cute highlights, but get very used to “Obstructed” “Evaded” “Out of Range”.
Re: Kill Zone
Take Heartseeker away from Thief, rename it Soulseeker, make it Dagger 2, take Life Siphon and add it do Dagger 3 (immob + life siphon), lower the new Dagger 3’s range to 600 and give it a 15 or 20s cooldown.
Now you have a kill zone.
It should leave an orb of life force on the ground when it dies. Living creature dies…life force…
I disagree. I think necros are lacking in many areas. Rangers , warriors, thieves, and engineers all stack condi better. I have never wanted a necro in any of my dungeons since they fixed the Life Siphon bug in cliffside fractal; I hit 48 in fractals back in December and then dropped them because the loot sucks. Well of blindness is good in wvw and pvp. If I want damage I would bring almost any other class, support I’d prefer ele/banner warrior/refuge thief/etc., if I want condi dmg then see above. There is literally no pve scenario where I would prefer a necro over other classes.
PvP, the class is ok. WvW, talent epidemic and press it alot.
There are some good things, but the class is missing a lot and it needs work.
Also, every +x% (except necro curses XI) is additive not multiplicative. E.g. +10% +10% =120% of base duration, not 121%, and +20% + 40% + 10% = 170% of base duration, not 185%. I was using buff duration as an example but the concept is identical for damage.
I’m a little surprised by this thread. Guardians are in a fantastic place right now. Scepter 1 isn’t amazing but it works just fine. Sword 2 is the same. Shield cd is definitely high. Zeal and Radiance are both quite bad, but we don’t need them. Hammer 2 is one of the best weapon abilities in the entire game – without question – and I never ever want a dev to even mention the ability. Hammer overall is an absolutely brilliant weapon, or par with Thief shortbow and Warrior Greatsword.
absolute resolution without healing gear is pretty flat in my opinion. for condi removal, you can run purity + signet + smite condi, which gives you a mix of demand and passive removal. AR is better in spvp; in wvw you will constantly have conditions, removing them doesn’t yield much advantage. If you want to be more extreme, then you can add sigil of genorsity (purity if you are cheap) and/or melandru runes.
If you are extra concerned about stability, then 0/0/30/30/10 for the buffed consecrated ground. This will also give you buffed wall of reflection, which is overall one of our best abilities. With EM you would be increasing the group’s overall damage (when I run EM, and with no points in radiance, I can usually maintain 3-5 stacks which is 105-165 power for everyone. Crit is sexier, but power is the best way to increase damage).
I love trying other builds as well, but the Zeal, Radiance, and Virtues lines are very weak. None of the gold medal talents are truly gold; RHS is nice but it’s only 1h weapons and it’s only 15% crit and it costs 30 pts in an otherwise weak line! Otoh, both of the XI and XII in Valor and Honor are extremely strong, and are supported by either decent (Valor) or excellent (Honor) trait lines. While we can jump through all kinds of hoops to try and create something even vaguely comparable, the truth is that the tools simply aren’t there. For example, if RHS were the X talent and the XI/XII talents were something like gain life on crit, 20% chance to give the group fury (5s) on crit, or something equivalent, now Radiance is a very strong trait line with truly gold talents. If the XI or XII talent in Virtues was something like When activated, all virtues give the activated abilities of all other virtues (e.g. each virtue would cause burning, heal, and aegis), or when activated, virtues remove a condition, heal, and grant 3 stacks of Might to the group, then there might be a reason to go 30 into Virtues. I’m not even sure that these traits would be strong enough to justify 30 into Virtues, but if the heals scaled well with healing power, then AR is great tier 2 trait (supports healing power) and there are a couple good tier 1 traits.
The point is, one can make good builds that are not 30/30, but 30/30 is better, more dependable, and more versatile (especially 0/0/30/30/10). In this build, you can give out might, get heals from buffs, gain more shouts and all their buffs, remove condi passively and via shout, buff shield, buff crit, passively regen allies’ hp, get more swiftness/blast finishers/underwater moves, buff symbols, etc. etc. etc. A RHS build does 1 thing – increase the crit rate of 1h weapons. Seems quite narrow in comparison doesn’t it? Finally, 300 vitality is amazing for a guard, as is 300 toughness. We have few traits that require crits (you’ll be able to keep Vigor up enough without Radiance), so crit rate gives little more than non-object damage). Meh I say.
I would spend 50 pts in Honor if I could.
All these builds with no vigor hurt my eyes.
Oh btw I suggest Sigil of Rage on all weapons. Haste is just too good.
Just make sure you never use WoR when hasted as it halves the duration (wonder if that’s ever going to get fixed).
Sigil of Rage? Ick. 45s cd shared on all sigils for something that more often than not will proc at an inconvenient time isn’t attractive to me.
Feedback and talented focus is pretty sick. Use Curtain to group up eles and then drop warden = win. Stack bleeds on Shaman rock shield to make it drop quick (it drops on # of hits, not dmg).
I don’t know much about ranger or engineer, but it seems like flamethrower + omnom ghost or healing bombs would destroy the lava eles.
I would save feedback for the boss once the shield drops, dealing with his arrows and their aoe dot + eles just makes it more complicated than it needs to be, especially with mesmers having so much reflection (and having 2 of them!).
Ele protection potions help a lot as well as lifesteal/life regen/endurance regen food.
Its very similar to my Archon (0/30/10/20/10)…
I went with Sigil of Accuracy (flat 5% crit bonus) and Sigil of Generosity. With over 75% crit chance Generosity hands off conditions pretty much as soon as you get one, and unlike the signet it doesn’t go into internal cooldown until it’s actually used.
All sigils trigger and go on cd regardless of if they do anything, i.e. all sigils always check for procs and will cd if they get one.
Ok check this out, I’m dedicating this to a guildie of mine:
If ANet implemented my idea (it sounds like there are good reasons not to, but if they did), you could check a box to enable “drunk mode” where it would disable the link between TP and bank.
Wow, I had no idea that BL was better for ectos. I thought it was the same as Master’s, but it guaranteed the upgrade was salvaged. Thanks!
(edited by Xynn.2748)
It’s probably worth waiting to see. The Law of the Universe states that if you buy something, it goes on sale tomorrow lol
It’s some weird bug. Logging in and out doesn’t seem to work, restarting the game usually does.
Q:
Maybe it’s just me but with the increased loot drop, I’m afraid globs of ectoplasm are going to start dropping in price what do you guys think?
A: Supply & Demand.
Please proceed to close this thread, thanks.
If you closed every thread that could be explained away with “Supply and demand”, half the forum would be empty.
Let’s speculate:
- I think ectos should be super-cheap because they drop all the time from world bosses now. Supply increased.
- I think ectos should be expensive because they are required in nearly every top-tier recipe. Demand increased.
- I think ectos should be expensive because people are going for more than one Legendary/demi-Legendary weapon now. Demand increased.
- I think ectos should be cheaper because people are giving up on Legendary weapons because of other difficult-to-acquire components. Demand lessened.
We could go on and on. Let’s!
Oh you wanted to discuss the potential policy reasons supporting an increase or decrease in ecto pricing. In that case, your Subject line choice was terrible. You asked “are”, which is a fact based question to which the only answer is “supply and demand.” Apparently you intended to ask “Should….”.
In that case, I believe the proper policy is that high-end gear should be more accessible and that a major hurdle to Legendaries and other weapons should not be the price of a generic crafting material. Thus, I believe ectos should cost less than the 42s that they did before the loot patch. Whether the proper cost is 15s, 20s, 25s, etc. is preference, but I believe that somewhere in that 15s-25s range would be a great blend of making high-end gear still cost something significant (~2-4g for an exotic) yet not flood the market. I base my opinion on pure personal impression since I don’t actively follow the global market for ectos and their derivative products.
I’m sorry I couldn’t do more but I’m not that rich lol.
Some quick facts during:
These rares were Armor only
Level 80 only
200 rares (about 48g total)(24s each average)
Done with 0MF
Done all at once with no logging, same character.Results-
157 runes (5g 78s 15c)
257 ecto (60g 78s 70c)
159 thick leather
29 hardened leather
4 orichalcum
94 mithril
25 elder wood logs
7 gossamer scraps
112 silk scrapsI’m hoping to do a Master Salvage Kit comparison sometime. But for now just wanted to show people what 200 rares got me. Hope this helps give an idea of an average, again sorry I couldn’t do more.
Thanks for the experiment! Would love to see the Master Kit comparison!
The Trading Post should be able to deduct funds from the account bank for purchases, and should not require the character who is making the purchases to have the funds on them.
In other words, if I buy something on the TP, the TP should first check to see if I have any money in the bank and then deduct that, and then use the funds on the specific character. It would basically be similar to a debit card. Since the TP can be accessed anywhere, it appears they already have this sort of technology (consortium? asura?) and that this sort of technology would be appropriate.
I mention this because some of us have several alts, but we want to buy gems/phat lootz/minis without having to leave a dungeon or event right in the middle to buy them. Please assist us in impulse shopping
Thanks!
Developers stated that the reason Final Rest hadn’t dropped was because people hadn’t farmed the event enough. Then a month later they say they had forgotten to turn the drop on. Today Final Rest is worth ~12g.
Draw your own inferences.
So you are talking about something totally different than stealth, don’t die, try to backstab, repeat. You are saying that using the various blinds together with weaken, the Thief can actually melee and complete a Dagger 1 chain. I’ve never tried that, everything I read seems to be bp/hs and then hit for a ton, which I just can’t pull off in pvp so far, the fights get too hectic and too much aoe.
Is there a blind rotation or priority system? is it basically dagger 3? I know these are very beginner questions, I’ve been 100% pve until recently. Some guildies are starting to play a little pvp and I always like to play in groups. If you need any fractal/dungeons/pve help I can pay you back haha
I’m new to the thief class, sorry if these are dumb questions. With 15 in DA and d/p, all I see is the ability to poison on steal and then that poisoning results in an additional 3 seconds of weakness. I don’t see how 3s of Weakness every 45s mitigates a significant amount of damage. Most builds are crit builds anyway, and weakness only affects non-crits, so it’s surprising weak in pvp in many cases. Is this presuming a Venom build (Spider Venom) with the Venom cd reduction? That would make more sense, but that seems to narrow the options, and it’s still only affecting 5 strikes, so, functionally, say 7-8s total of weakness?
What am I missing?
Having a spread of difficulties is the best idea. There are a lot of people in the game, and a lot of people that I like and like talking to and socializing with while I play, that are at different skill levels. I’d like to have a few dungeons where I can grab these people and not have to weigh cost/benefit.
To me the only improvement is the Ghost Eater fight, that always seemed like a boss that was rushed and not finished, and the ghostbuster thing is very clever and fun.
Original AC was loved by all; it was a great dungeon to grab whomever was around, hop on voice chat and talk while playing. It was a great mix of rewards (<3 AC tokens), timing, and occasionally scary moments (Kohler, scavengers, etc.).
I would have rather seen 1 new path added to dungeons rather than the dungeon itself redone. My idea for AC path 4 was to make an underwater path in the pool under Kohler’s tower. That way, Kohler (and troll) can still be done, and the other 3 paths remain. That’s actually adding something.
To take a higher level view, why was one of the most popular dungeons target for a re-work instead of another dungeon? That is analogous to Mercedes deciding to refresh its car line-up, and starting with the highest selling model – obviously a bad business decision.
Hrouda is a content designer. PS it’s nice to know that necros rank somewhere lower than pets.
For everyone talking about people complaining it’s too easy, what fractal level are you on? I quit on level 48 two months ago because the rewards are trash.
Now on to the real point of why your AC changes indicate that Robert has no idea what he is doing. People play MMOs because they are social. AC was the perfect social dungeon – want to bring 1-2 lowbies? No problem, the other 3 of us will played geared 80s. Try that now.
I was wondering who would make such direct comments on the Dev and then I saw you mention fractal levels, and then I recognized your name. If my memory serves me right you are the tanky tanky Asura guardian I ran into a few times during level 40+. I wouldn’t go into the details of why I remember so clearly, but I’ll just say, fractal level isn’t really indicative of actual skill sometimes since a lot of people got to level 40+ doing the same 3 of the 9 fractals over and over again without seeing the rest.
Also, you know, sometimes you might just happened to have gotten in a group group.
Hi! Yeah that’s me, how have you been? In general I agree that it’s not a direct indicator of skill level, but between the stuff we have in game I’d say that high level fractals, particularly being there 2 months ago is one of the better indicators we have. But that wasn’t my point. There are some people in this thread that are saying “l2p, dungeons should be challenging, this game is too easy” etc. I was illustrating that many of these people haven’t done anything actually difficult (high level fractals) and are failing to distinguish between starter dungeons, regular dungeons, and hard dungeons.
Sorry if I couldn’t find the right words to explain it.
Did Robert apologize for AC yet? I haven’t been following this thread.
I consider fractals a huge waste of time now. I have been at 48 for about 2 months. I quit when I did the full 48 fractal, including daily maw, and got 2 rares and no skins.
shadow refuge → rez. Honestly, it’s so good that I would bring a thief along just to auto attack and do that.
Cause warriors are pretty kitten good. Sorry if you didn’t know that.
What Perspective? PvE? Yes. tPvP? Nada.
Wut. Banner heal bunker, and GS/LB roamer work just fine. Do you play pvp?
It’s funny that they succeeded on a completely new class, Mesmer, and failed so hard on a tried and true class, Necromancer.
Master of attrition fighting? With my 38hp heal on every attack? Sounds legit.
Just imagine if every single store out there had their own currency. And banks refused to convert currency to something you could use in another store. There can’t be a ‘black market conversion agent’ either because it’s all soul/account bound. That is what Anet is doing to the game right now. New content = new currency.
I got almost a million karma and nothing to spend it on (I don’t want to fill up my storage with whatever karma gets me for a legendary). I have several of each dungeon token but only because I had to for the monthly, so nothing to spend those on – don’t really like dungeons but can’t convert those stupid tokens to something useful to me. And various other item based currencies that I really don’t want to waste the storage on but it’s a ‘currency’ thus has more value than gold so I hold onto it in hopes of using it later.
I’ve made a few threads on this earlier, but they just keep piling on the currencies and doing nothing about the logistics of it all.
I can stack 250 of each but you HAVE TO HAVE more than a stack for some items… really really bad design decision. Why does anet care if I have enough of some other currency to buy it with? That just means there aren’t enough useful things to buy with the already existing currencies.
Karma: I did good deeds, acquired karma and now I have absolutely nothing to buy with it (aside from that orrian something-or-other box). I can’t convert the equity of it to something else that might interest me more so I just accumulate more of it forever until it maxes out.Pretty much every currency in the game can be converted to gold.
Karma can be spent on Orrian Jewelry Boxes to make vendor trash items and lodestones. It can also be spent on items that can be put in the mystic forge, which results in items that can be sold on TP or to a vendor.
Dungeon tokens can purchase items that can be put in the forge.
Laurels can purchase crafting materials, unid dyes, or gear boxes.
Gems can be directly sold for gold.
Skill points can be used to promote crafting materials to more valuable ones which can be sold on the TP.
Guild commendations can (combined with 10s) purchase gear boxes, whose contents can be sold on the TP for more than the gold cost.
The only currencies that can’t be converted to gold are the guild bound ones (Merits and Influence, although gold can be converted to influence) and Glory which is exclusive to sPvP and is the sole currency for that part of the game.
You can think the exchange rate isn’t satisfactory to you, but you can’t claim that the currencies cannot be converted.
So, you can exchange currencies at a miserably bad rate for a currency that doesn’t buy you the things that are tied to the new currencies added every patch.
I think you may have missed the boat on this topic. Once you can explain how I can translate dungeon tokens, karma, etc. into ascended amulets and accessories, then you will be on point.
The answer to the currency issue is not, as you suggest, to spend all the other currencies to buy whatever you can. The answer is to institute an exchange system where X karma can be traded for Y laurels, and so on, or to stop adding new items every kitten patch that can exclusively be bought with a brand new currency. What the kitten is so wrong with being able to buy ascended accessories with karma?
Try to stay on topic please.
just fyi, no one really needs support. need dps and survivability. don’t die, and kill stuff. thx. we don’t need ur 200 pt water aa. If you can maintain 25 vuln solo at least you might be useful unless there’s a warrior or a (god kitten forbid) axe (ROFL) necro in the group.
x/x/30/30/x. shocking right?
it’s bad. that’s pretty much the main reason.
ele isn’t a tank unless geared and spec’d right. scepter is bad. just bad. No, stop, it’s bad. play d/d and be overpowered and complain about the 5s rtl nerf.
I think they are overpowered in the simple glass cannon kill, and underpowered in most other areas. If a thief isn’t 25/30/x/x/x heartseeker, they aren’t really useful. GG unload? rofl. sword? rofl.
x/x/30/30/x the same as every other non-kittenty guardian build in the game. for spvp x/x/30/20/20 for condi removal.
Necro bad. pvp wellbomb. the end.
Tag stuff and don’t die. glhf
Cause warriors are pretty kitten good. Sorry if you didn’t know that.
