Guild Wars 2 does not launch with RSS overlays enabled after the Creator’s Update. I noticed this behaviour in the CU preview builds, but it’s also carried over to the stable release, too.

It worked fine before the CU builds.

Latest Windows 10 Slow Ring issues

First time I’ve come across issues on the slow ring.

Guild Wars 2 is the only game that no longer launches on the latest build, or indeed the fast ring build (I updated to that to see if the later version fixed the issue).

Basically, I log in, hit play – nothing happens. It’s not the same as a similar issue where the screen flashes a couple of times, it literally pops up in the process list for a second and then closes.

It works on both the previous slow ring build and the latest stable build (I have a disc image I can flash back to).

So far I’ve tried:

Deleting the GW2 cache folder.
Moving GW2 to different drive
Running the game as admin
Repairing the data archive.
Running the -diag command. No issues found.

Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: So on a hunch, a made a brand new local user account. Game works fine there, just not on my main one. No idea why.

SOLVED: It’s a new conflict with RivaStatisticsServer overlays. Set it detection level to off for GW2 and it’ll work.

Make sure you connected monitor to the GPU and not the motherboard. You wouldn’t be the first person that’s done that.

@Half Mystic that’s rubbish. He should be getting much better performance of that regardless of the state of the game’s overall performance. I was on my old 2600K and 970 combination.

“Box of Ascender Armor” it says. Sounds like, you know, a box of ascended armor.

Two weeks I dedicated to finishing that collection. Doing run after run of Dragon’s Stand, putting up with disconnects, not getting into maps despite turning up 15 minutes early because the game has no queuing system after 4 years..

And then only getting a box of armor 2/5 completions with 200% participation, too.

Finally get my reward.

Choose a box of ascended armor! Yes! Then it says choose a chest of ascended armor! Yes!

And then from the chest choose one piece.

What the kitten.

All that work for a single piece of ascended armor? That is the worst reward for such a long time investment in the entire game. What’s worse is that the phrasing mislead me in such a way that I didn’t even think to check on the wiki because it seemed so clear. They wouldn’t possibly just give you a single piece of armor – it would say that, right? And after such a massive time investment – surely not!

I am so frustrated.

Oh, and that Heart and Minds mission – fix it. It’s been 2 years almost. It is buggy as hell, still.

Yea boxes have always been 1 pieace each box as rewards, only in crafting can you make boxes that give full set of exotic if you have the correct recipe

Edit
Be glad you dident get a Teq hoard and think it would be more then one weapon

Edit 2
You mean less then a year since hot released right?

I meant almost a year, yea, not sure where that came from.

I’ve crafted those boxes, that’s why I assumed it was the same. Need some time away from the game now. My mistake or not, it’s soured me on it completely.

After a frustrating day of trying to get into a map of Dragon’s Stand, I still find it hard to believe that GW2 does not have a queuing system for the maps where meta events take place.

You have to be there on the dot of when the map starts and hope you’re lucky enough to be one of the first to a) find the right lfg that gets the commanders and b) actually manage to join the map in time.

At that point, a queuing system would show me a place in line and let me go off and do something else. What do I have to do in GW2? Sit around right clicking and left clicking hoping that enough people drop out.

This is not how real life works, Anet. The game is 4 years old. You had a queuing system in WvW at one point, you have one in PvP. Give us one for meta event maps.

Either that or allow players to kick start a new instance where there are enough of us, rather than splintering us off into 4/5 different empty maps.

Black Screen with Cursor

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: ZaxanRazor.6235

ZaxanRazor.6235

Since one of the patches last week, I’ve had numerous soft crashes – the game’s screen goes black, however sound remains, the cursor remains and works, and pressing shortcuts brings up menus, however the game can’t recover without closing it and starting it again.

This can happen seemingly at random – in the middle of a fight, in PvP, when I’m stood around in a city – at any time.

Today it has happened 3 times, twice in the last hour.

Occasionally the game will also get stuck at loading screens with the loading circle spinning. It either eventually disconnects me or does nothing.

I’ve checked event log for related errors, there are none. I’ve tried connecting to our N wireless network rather than AC (which we’ve had running rocksteady for 2 years, now).

I’ve tried reverting wireless adapter drivers. I’ve tried removing the current ones and reinstalling them.

I have not recently updated my Nvidia drivers and I’m still on the GTA V game ready ones because they’re the only ones that don’t crash.

This setup has been running GW2 just fine since launch, so I’m skeptical of any router settings tweaks – as I don’t see why it would suddenly stop working.

I have also deleted the GW2 cache folder today, if anything it made the crashes happen more frequently.

I’ve also repaired the client yesterday.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Oh, and yes I’m using the 64 bit client. Yes, the same thing happens with the 32 bit client.

Additional Edit: Wife’s PC is in the same room connected to the same network, she plays the game without issues.

My wife is having this problem.

She has a character that’s partway through Living World Season 2 (a re-run, not the first time).

She wants to go back to the Personal Story. When she presses “quit this episode” all that happens is that the Living World episode is removed from the tracker, but the Personal Story doesn’t activate.

The next time she moves to a new map, the Living Story is activated again. So effectively, this character cannot go back to the Personal Story.

Anyone got any ideas?

Neither of us have and problems with other games, just my wife with Guild Wars 2.

Not sure whether it’s tied to certain accounts or what. We’ve reinstalled the game on my wife’s computer, we’ve swapped wireless dongles – nothing helps. Always fine on mine, my wife’s has issues.

EDIT:

Just to say, we are now playing with our accounts on opposite computers. I’m getting no lag or disconnections on her computer, her account gets lag but hasn’t yet disconnected on mine.

As the title really. Only noticed this since the last update. Sitting aroud with the trading post open will now mean that Guild Wars 2 and Coherent UI are using anywhere between 70% and 88% of my core i7 – so that’s what, 7/8 threads?

Great that it uses multi-threading, I’m just not sure if this is intended behaviour for something as simple as a trading post interface.

This now means that Guild Wars 2 can causes the same temperatures as encoding an hour of video, which is obviously a bit ott.

I’m not worried, I have a h100i and it never breaches 55°C – I’m just reporting it because I don’t think its intended behaviour.

or

“Because new players, we have decided that there should only be one form of currency. This form of currency will be gems. Everything now costs gems. Oh, by the way, because new players like rounded numbers, you can only buy gems in 500 or 1000 volumes.”

Surely this latest outrage is more than enough evidence that whoever it is has absolutely no idea what the player base wants, no idea how to treat veteran players and no idea how to keep the player base on the good side of a relationship.

I mean, is this Mike O’Brien coming up with these things? Is it someone else? Have you hired someone and given them the title of “Head of making sure the game can be played by people with an IQ under 50” and given them carte blanche to change anything they want?

Or did someone, somewhere decide that blaming every unpopular change on “new players” was a better strategy than being transparent with your customers?

It’s like Anet are purposefully trying to drive away veteran players. This is one of the most ridiculous changes I’ve ever seen to an MMO.

Put the manual exchange option back in, put it back in quickly. You’re driving away your long-term players with this crap.

I don’t know what statistics you use, but everyone I know in the game changed 10-20g at a time. No one did it in bulk, no one wants to do it in bulk, and no one will buy gems from you either because it’s clear you’re just trying to ruthlessly extort money from people who don’t have the time to save up enough to get 400 gems at once.

Put it back. Stop making needless, pointless and disruptive changes.

Why wouldn’t you ask the community about this before? Why do you promise that you’ll look out for veteran players, and then with every update stab them in the back?

At the very least you must put options in there that allow you to buy 10/20/50/100/200 gems. It’s so deceitful when most of the items in the gem store fall between the tiers of gems that you can buy.

Oh, and removing the conversion graph only makes it look more dishonest. That needs to be put back in too.

Implementing DX11 by itself wouldn’t do much good. It could be a tiny performance upgrade, but that’s about it. People often think DX upgrades are some miracle patches that make games look better, but that’s far from the truth. In fact, The Witcher 2 – still one of the best-looking games out there – is a DX9 game.

First – you can’t compare a game like Witcher 2 to GW2. Witcher 2 is a single player, somewhat linear game with closed environments. It looks kitten pretty, but it’s nowhere near as complex as GW2 in terms of map size or character interaction.

Second – DX11 would be a big improvement as it specifically allows for the use of multi-threading in a way that DX9 just doesn’t. It allows threading to scale with the number of cores available on the CPU. DX9 has a specific number of threads regardless of the computer its running on. It would also allow for the use of DirectCompute to further enhance performance.

Yes but the engine would need to also be recoded to be more multithreaded than it currently is to get the most out of a Dx11 port.

It would take some work, but it’s not unheard of. WoW has added DX11 support, as did Lord of the Rings Online.

WoW had income over $1 billion a year for a few years there, they could afford to devote a small building of devs with game engine development experience to recoding it. GW2 is only in the $80-100 million income range.

You ignored LOTRO, which had nowhere near GW2’s income.

It will not cause a blue screen on it’s own if the CPU/GPU overheats. That’s not how it works. There is not blue screen code that relates to overheating CPU/GPU and nothing else.

There is no specific blue screen in modern operating systems for an overheating CPU. There used to be, there isn’t any more – because all CPUs now have internal thermal protection.

Nowadays, any bluescreen that relates to heat also relates to a number of other settings in conjunction – not just purely heat on its own.

Also note that an i5 won’t automatically shut down at 80°C for overheating. It’s got a good 20°C before it does that. It will bluescreen before that – again, unstable overclock, but not because of heat on its own.

This is a feature that many people are going to be taking advantage of already.

Supersampling off plus DSR @ 1440p looks completely different to 1080P without DSR and smoothing.

CPU bound GW2 and Megaservers

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: ZaxanRazor.6235

ZaxanRazor.6235

The problem with games like this is that they’re always going to be CPU bound when it comes to zergs and massive events. There isn’t much Anet could do outside of ensuring the game uses as many cores as possible – however that introduces its own problems:

Firstly, the game would need to be re-written from the ground up. This alone makes it near impossible to do.

Secondly, they would need to cap how much of a CPU can be used. If the game started using all available cores, a lot of people would suddenly be complaining that the game is making their PC overheat and shut down – especially those that aren’t great at maintaining their hardware.

Thirdly, there are very few game developers who have experience in writing programs that can use 4 or more cores. As demonstrated by Ubisoft, it doesn’t work out particularly well when you have inexperienced people attempting to bodge it.

The only other alternative is to have the servers handle more and more of the load – but this is extremely expensive and we all know they’re having problems with server performance as it is.

So while it would be nice for the game to perform better in large scale situations, I really don’t think any massive improvements in this area will be forthcoming. The most realistic hope is that there’s a pretty major leap in CPU performance with one of the next few generations that make it a non-issue.

Any card can suffer from coil whine.

EVGA seem to have bigger problems with it than most, however some MSI 970 G4 owners have also complained about it.

Gigabyte are not immune, my 770 had awful coil whine when it was overclocked.

My new Strix 970 doesn’t – however I don’t recommend purchasing ASUS because if you do have to return something you are going to struggle with them. Sadly, choice was limited in Switzerland as nothing is ever in stock, and when it is prices are badly inflated.

@OP – For reference, my 970 can use DSR 4k and still maintain 60FPS a great deal of the time – provided you turn reflections off, limit the character models and don’t use ultra shadows.

I would suggest if you’ve both overclocked the cards at all to dial it down.

ZaxanRazor.6235

With the release of the Nvidia 900 series, a lot of people are going to be downsampling this game from 4K.

Surprisingly enough, this works really well even on a single 970 for me – I’m still playing with 60FPS running around doing dailies by only sacrificing reflections (will you ever fix those?), Ultra quality shadows and highest detail character models.

However, the interface setting ‘largest’ is woefully tiny on 4K. It’s just about usable, although the cursor doesn’t exactly point properly. You have to pay attention to what’s highlighted rather than where the tip of the cursor is.

I would say that even when downsampling from 1440p the largest interface setting is still on the small side.

So please Anet – tweak the interface scaling options. It shouldn’t take too long to do, and more and more people are going to be downsampling this game in the coming months (or indeed, playing on actual 4K screens).

Please fix the camera.

The whole fight is built around broken mechanics. It’s silly.

I don’t care if it’s expensive, but forcing players to have 20+ attempts when they have minimal available free time to do it, especially when the final fight relies on broken game mechanics (loss of targeting) is just not on.

Irritating ingame question

I feel I need some backstory on this, if anyone has managed to find anything out.

Basically, this one guy has been logging in, coming into zones, every day, asking “is there a girl from Sweden?” or some variation – for months and months. Every single day.

Used to see it on Whiteside Ridge, although I don’t doubt he guested around. Now see it routinely on the EU megaservers.

I’m not going to post his name because I don’t want to turn this into a witch hunt, but its really pretty funny and/or weird.

Anyone know more?

Dungeon scaling for less than 5?

So then, my question really is whether or not they want to make all dungeons and paths doable by two people, by design rather than by accident.

Dungeons scale with less people? I didn’t know that, I thought they were fixed at levels for five players.

That’s not really the same though is it? – it relies on highly specific builds with highly specific tactics and in some cases exploiting bugs.

Unless I’m mistaken.

Is this in the thoughts of the devs? Something like Lotro’s missions – for those that haven’t played, they introduced a patch that allowed players to solo the main missions, which previously required groups to complete.

While I don’t want stuff scaled down just for solo players, I spend most of the time playing this game with my wife when we get a spare evening. I’m sure there are plenty of others that just play this game with a single or a couple of friends.

I would love to see the dungeons scale down to a minimum party size of 2. Make it uber difficult, fine, no problem.

There are some achievements in this game that I’ll never get at this point, I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way – as like all online games, playing with strangers is, in 90% of cases, a gigantic pain in the kitten.

Client is missing clicks and key presses

What the title says really.

Sometimes pressing a skill key or double clicking isn’t registering with the game.

The skill icon / cursor shows the bezel / border to indicate that the client has recognised the skill has been pressed, but sometimes won’t activate the skill.

This makes playing with bomb kits and grenade kits awful at the moment. It’s not skill lag, the skills just don’t trigger.

Also have a similar problem when using the bank – about 1/4 time double clicking to deposit won’t work.

I’m not using wireless peripherals and I don’t have the problem in any other game nor application. This started since the patch yesterday and is seriously making playing the game frustrating.

Playing on Whiteside Ridge. Others on reddit are having the same problem.
