Hi all,

We’re planning on making some changes to amulets/sigils/runes available in PvP for the Winter 2016 Update (January 26). Some of these changes will greatly affect the way that PvP is played, so I wanted to take this opportunity to get the changes in front of everyone, discuss the implications as a group, and see where we net out…

PS, gold for purchases runes/amulets will be refunded, and the newly added amulets will be free.

Any planned changes, laid out on paper, without a place for the player base at large, to play test said proposed changes (free beta testing for Anet…think of the budget savings) is wishful changes at best and more of the same at it’s worst.

Until you (ArenaNet…not to be confused with you Josh Davis, the person) get over whatever internal resistance to setting up a live play test server. so that we the players can show you what the meta(s) will become, you are simply just throwing crap against the wall and hoping it’ll sort itself out.

But where’s the play test feedback?

Where’s the feedback from the other two aspects of the game…WvW and PvE…that are also impacted directly by these changes?

Why are these changes only listed here in PvP when the other PvP game mode, WvW, has nothing posted in it about incoming changes?

There are just far, far too many unaswered questions and yet again we, your paying customers, are being asked to wait for it and get used to it when it arrives.

As our friends from across the pond would say…this is a load of bollox.

Server Switch Up

…You’ll end up with top tier servers stomping lower tier servers for a week, or the top tier players will need to take time out to allow a more even match up and who is going to choose to do that?! Either way there’s no real fun for either side…

So maybe one week a month, you’ll be in an overwhelming battle. And these days, “top teir servers” means maybe one or two opponents will fill one more map than you can or their EBG blob will be a bit bigger than yours.

And if it’s a proper randomized system, more like one week every 5’ish weeks, you’ll be in a not exactly balanced match.

And even you admit that the “top tier” servers could take a break for part of that week that you end up facing them.

And you never know, “lower tier” servers could end up learning a thing or two from better competition and get…better.

And it w/could re-invigorate server pride again. Give us something to positively talk about for a while, raggin’ on each other instead of the devs.

So what would be wrong with a random match up every week again? Kids don’t like to lose. But this flies in the face with the reality that there is no winning without losing. As the saying goes, the only end difference between winning and losing is how you feel after the game.

But same, same, same, same for endless months, and even years, is worse. It’s boring.

The stylized glicko system that Anet has chosen has never generated the engaging match ups that it should have, was more about balanced results and…a little history…as many predicted when it was introduced and implemented (without any serious community input) would just end up in pretty much quickly boring static match ups.

Present day, one the underlying issues with WvW is the staleness of the match up system. It doesn’t really change much, if at all.

And this staleness has driven people to the top 3 servers for…in simplest terms…better. Better competition. Better match ups. Better (insert yours here).

Auto Upgrades is Killing the game

auto upgrade will be disabled, you got to read the post they made a week ago. there they state that upgrading will only happen if dolyaks reach their destination.

Did read it.

It’s an attempted save face move. Auto upgrades still run, now based on doly supply. You still can’t manually trigger the upgrade. That’s the only change.

There was nothing wrong with the old system, save for the gold cost, which was back when the game had a couple of money syncs (economy) and to ‘discourage’ trolling/spies/ebil quaggans.

I’m thinking some of the other new changes coming will be a helicoptor gunship at a 10 kill streak and orbital strike at 20! Think of how awesome it will fit in with the banners and auras and traps and fields and all the other fun power ups that have been added!

First bit of feedback I wanted to say; there is far too little posts like this. I’ve read through most of the 7 pages (so far) and there’s great feedback here. And very little FLAME ON! There needs to be way, way more of this.

Auto upgrades was/is a bad change. A half hearted attempt to tweak and continue to justify the investment of this “feature” can make something bad, worse. Roll back the old system, remove the gold requirement. It makes player interactions matter. It makes the time investment in the upgrades matter. It brings players together to kill their fellow wo/man (virtually!).

Re-introduction of PPK is great. No idea why this was taken away. Great to see it back. For a game that had a really low death penalty and then went to no death penalty other than a small time sync, positive change. Also will benefit higher skilled/higher skilled smaller groups/pop shards.

Siege cost changes, to me, is a direct line to addressing the lower pop shards that those not in the top 2 tiers experience week after week. Positive change.

Have to agree with many others that the rally/downed propsals sound real nice on paper. This needs to be meta tested. Absolutely agree that pin sniping/focus sniping issues are not addressed in the brief outline so there are all kinds of “unintended consequences” that could trickle out of this.

While I would like to thank you for reaching out, looking for feedback, I will also echo many others here in saying that unless these changes are being planned in parallel stream to changes to the long standing issues, at the core of Dub-vee-Dub, than I too have to question the priorties of this game’s team leaders. Putting a slightly new shine on the same old thing, is just the same old thing.

P.S. +1 on bring back the old BL’s. New maps are nice and all. I’m sure some of you are really proud of your work. They just don’t function well as working, living medium→large scale PvP maps.

Yup, agree.

Toon damage output is out of control. Insta spike damage never, ever, ever works in MMO’s. Anet should have known this condisering it almost ruined their big brother game (L2) way back when.

There also needs to be a test server so that we (the players) can meta test this for (free) and sort out these poor meta’s before they go live.

Hey, lots of changes and I bet you’re thinking; that there is always resistance to change. Us the customers will just get used to it.

Considering how large and complicated GW:2 is, can you please follow the lead of pretty much every other AAA and have a single community manager that the community can interact with.

You have an official website. Forums. Wiki. Reddit. Twitter. Facebook. MySpace. Anet, you’re all over the place. Your message and information is scattered.

Also, as a long time player, more so now than…well…ever in this game’s life, there seems to be a volumous disconnect between development of the game and customers of the game.

Thanks for listening. Hopefully this is the start of something awesome!

WvW server issue(s)?

An idea was thrown out yesterday that Anet may be stealth testing changes that are related to the possible removal of culling this month. Given that they stealth tested reductions in map population caps last month, I’d say this theory has its merits.

Good to know our friends over on Blackgate are suffering from the same quality of life issues…in a hey its not just us way that is.

Yeah I saw that too Liquid. Sounds reasonable but hence the nature of my Q? post.

Seen symptoms like this from ddos’ing as well in other mmo’s.

Just trying to ascertain if something is up with the very recent performance of the WvW servers at large (such as a ddos attack)

Also wanted to gauge if I’m off my rocker or if others have noticed a performance dip on the server side in the past couple of days from outside of my own local playing experiences this week.

Maybe you folks on the Anet side are unawares? Maybe you are fully aware and haven’t rolled to the stage of releasing a statement?

I can only speak locally (my own experiences and those of others that I play with) here in Tier 1 North America, but since Monday early AM EST, the WvW servers seem to be suffering some pretty signifigant performance issues.

I describe them as server side due to the general lag in several aspects of ‘normal’ gameplay (skill activation-recogintion, moving through green/red/blue portals into towers/keeps, ‘rubber banding’ by both players and npc’s, spiking downed player[s], waypoint timer desynchs, heck even picking up bags).

These bracketed gameplay elements are lagged even when involved in small scale combat on overall lower popluated maps.

Since Tuesday, there has also been an issue with random disconnections by gamers clients to the game. Fortunately I’ve only had 2 so far but others have been randomly disconnected multiple times in a row.

Lag getting worse

Should have been with us on JQ BL today.

All three T1 NA servers represented en masse at Hills…the whole map was lagged including all timers on wp’s, skills, wep change…on the whole map.

I’m sure our conterparts on Sea of Blackgate and Sanctum would report the same issues.

Absolutely agree with the op.

Something to reflect on the scoreboard for the pvp part of a pvp gametype (who’d a thunk it). It doesn’t even have to be a huge score tick either…which it seems would help to allay the fears of some here who think pvp kills in a pvp game type should not reflect on the score and final outcome of the game.

We already have a system where solo players/small groups can impact the scoreboard by ganking yaks. So why not a small score for you know…pvp.

4 different(-ish) maps, 4 different game types, one score board to rule them all. Almost kind of a no duh set up to this gamer. Half the game types could be timer/time zone based to satiate the ‘but, but they’re playing when I’m not playing’ crowd.

Room to grow for the future? A lack of vision? Just ran out of release development time? Who knows why it’s just all cap and hold with a couple of handy jp’s and a lot of overkill on inconsequential aggro pve trash mobs and so-so group pve bosses.

Directly to the op’s post, interesting idea but could be game breaking to the current cap and hold game type scoring mechanics.

Derr…the post that many are referring to and even quoting from (on this thread page and the one previous) is the OP of this topic that’s 4 months (yeah you read that right, four months) old.

The relevancy of changes being brought about 4 months ago on the current situation of massive WvW Q times widespread amongst active WvW shards and visibly lower player counts on every single map is what again?

And let’s not forget that this problem has all happend directly following a series of major game updates.

It also seems that the team may be on a ‘weekend off’ as even the “official” twitter feed hasn’t been updated since Friday.

Grin and bear time and cross our itty bitty asuran fingers and toes that this is top of the list of things to do on Monday and we get a true response to what’s up.

How can one’s heart belong to more than one? I know it defies convential logic, but sadly it is so.

It was all such a whirr. Me, as usual, being late for a date with one of your brothers. Dashing I went across the fields between, where only the minotaur dare play.

There I found you all, shadowing in and out. First one, then another, my heart lept when yet a third caught my eye.

Gifts you presented me, a house promised by all three.

But in the end, I was left to lay alone, broken hearted, like someone drove a stake straight through me.

I dunno. As it sits right now, with WvW in it’s current form/state, agreed with the OP.

If on the other hand culling is about to be sorted and the pop caps can be lifted up, some fat juicy PVE events to slaughter poor poor care bears again and again in doesn’t exactly sound like a too terrible idea to me.

Yeah there really needs to be some variety in them there borderlands. A random rotating central map would be pretty sweet as well. TBH all of the maps, if there was say 3 or 4 of them, on a random rotation with the match up switch ups….sah-weet! imo.

Urban would be cool. Man a rata run type would be nuts.

One thing there needs to be an end to though IMO is the what I would call wasted space a la borderlands. Too many open spaces that really nobody goes to unless you’re traveling or (for whatever reason) pve’ing.

More like the most truthful post you’ve read in a while.

No offense but to support our war efforts in another mmo that shall remain nameless, we had upwards of half a dozen pve only guilds in our 0 sec zones (hint hint) supplying us. On top of that, we had regular corp (hint, hint) pve groupings for drops and rares.

It’s funny that there are so many inexperienced mmo players here, who at the same time, are filled with self entitlement. Super bad combo that leads to so many QQ post such as this one.

I just gotta LoL at all the gear QQ’ing from so called full time WvW’ers.

If you want the hawt gear, ya gots to pay your dues to go get it. It really isn’t much (psst…that’s why they say there isn’t a gear grind…you don’t have to kill 15k mobs in the hopes of one single drop). A couple of days max doing that icky pve and then you can go pew-pew instead of QQ.

Much, much more hard core pvp MMO’s than GW:2 have pve gathering in order for you to have the resources and/or gear drops to up your pvp game. It’s just the way it works kids. Now let that sink in and get over it already.

And yeah, totally agree, the ascended gear that’s in game atm is not a substantial enough boost to be crying this much over.

And yeah, yeah. Agree that WvW rewards should/need to be better.

Ummm, yeah cuz you know, the winning team is going out and you know, playing the game, capping and holding in numbers.

My own combined game experiences have been when we’ve lost, it’s because we haven’t had the numbers and/or we’ve been disorganized versus a superior force. I didn’t feel the need for the magic wand to be waved and some sort of unearned advantage to be given to my losing side. It sucks losing and even losing badly, I’ve felt it & seen it.

If you read through the entire post you’d see I don’t disagree with some underlying issues such as transfers and the way the auto match up system is ranking matches together.

Those are some well thought out ideas.

But here’s the basic premise to all of your proposed solutions (…yes even Daish…) is ‘…help us Anet, we’re losing, so give us free unearned stuff…’

And anyway you formulate that to some kind of in game npc/buff/give every losing team commander a legendary spawn anywhere on the map advantage over those that are winning is really not a very good idea.

Yes, free uninhibited server transfers are an issue, agreed. Some sort of time out system, even after paid, needs to be there. 2 or 3 weeks of no wvw seems reasonable to most folks threads that I’ve read and posts that I’ve seen.

The other issue is the automated match up system. There was a very well written out post about Anet/human intervention in the matchups so that approriate match ups are actually being set up.

But I just can’t see how any ‘…sniff-sniff xyz server is beatin us so buff the crap out of us and give us free stuff…’ will work without completely making doing all the…you know, having your players actually play wvw and you know, capture and hold stuff…hugely devalued.

IMO giving losing players an advantage would have a much, much more negative consequence.

I get that folks can get upset by the sudden facination in care bearing by our server. It was a tight round after all.

But tonight’s Stone Mist take back was bad…as in Anet should be ashamed of themselves…10 fps bad. I haven’t seen lag that bad since castle sieges in L2. Arrow carts and what not being set up without rendering? C’mon now son! LoLz.

Too many things are broken or just not wholly working right that WvW is messed up atm to be getting this bent out of shape over IMO.

I’m in a bit of a unique position. Currently have a lvl 80 mezzer, necro and warrior and have WvW’ed in all of them.

I can tell you they are all a problem and they all have their weaknesses.

IMO any other lvl 80 toon played by a half decent player is a problem in WvW in skirmishes (small group fights of say no larger than 8 v 8).

Like any other MMOG that I’ve played over the years, in large group fights…aka da zerg…it’s pretty much luck of the draw. You get focus fired, you’re going down.
