SOS/JQ/SBI-Week of 12/7 NonScore Discussion

in WvW

cold.3946

The non-score thread is a good idea but I don’t think it needs to be weekly. Perhaps think about making this a permanent thread and just call it Tier 1 non-score discussion.

If you want to segment weekly affairs you can just post in the thread with a reply that states Week of 12/7 below or something.

That way we can have one static thread that encompasses all the non-score issues and lets people read through previous week discussions more easily.

New Culling Trial (Ended)

in WvW

Posted by: cold.3946

cold.3946

Just curious Habib, is there any plan to make culling a hardware related option. Like when you install the game it determines your hardware capability and then enables/disables or varies the level of culling appropriately?

I’m sure you have reasons for the way you’ve implemented things, I’d just like to understand those better. I know you guys work hard to make GW2 accessible on as much hardware as possible and lowering the minspec after launch isn’t a possibility. Still, wouldn’t a system like I’ve described give us the best of both worlds?

Essentially it lets players who invested heavily in gaming pc hardware get the benefit of their investment while still letting players with older machines enjoy GW2.

Thanks in advance!

There’s no need to antagonize like your post does. That is equally as bad as the people making excuses. Win or lose with dignity. That means cut it out with the kitten novels and just say GG to each other – whether you won or lost.

Don’t normally try to talk bout these things but SBI, that group of WM that you have at Hills inner right now, ahem, ahem, might wanna call them all off.

If something happened I’m sure their leadership wants to know about it. WM is a very well respected guild from GW1 and now in GW2. I doubt very much that there is any foul play, but instead of being vague about it please bring it to their attention at stormbluffisle.com so they can respond.

We’ve had this conversation enough times in T1 that I think we can write off anyone that complains about 2v1s. The idea that there is some complicit alliance at work has been debunked to death. What you perceive is just the natural balance of a three way fight.

This guy said it best:

There are 2 reasons why there would be the appearance of 2v1, one tactical and the other mathematical.

Tactical
If server A is beating up server B, server C can reasonably expect that server B’s defenders will be too busy to respond while they ninja some camps or towers. Also, server C can reasonably fear that server A will have enough defenders to spare for an attack on them if they call attention to themselves by flipping anything.
Server A knows this and allows server C to go about relatively unmolested.
To server B this looks like an alliance but it is really each server just doing what is in it’s best interest.

Mathematically
If servers A and B are tied in points and server C is far behind and server A takes a camp from server C, then server A takes the lead by 5 points.
But if server A takes a camp from server B instead then server A moves into the lead by 10 points.
The assests of you nearest rival are worth twice what the assests of the lowest server are.

And this guy explains it from a more strategic perspective:

The way borderlands are structured necessitates there is 2 attackers vs 1 defender.

West spawn attackers:

You have easy access to south west tower and supply camp and a safe treb from the supply camp that hits both inner and outer walls/doors of west keep. West keep is a very bad keep to hold because it can be safe trebbed from garrison. Very hard to push to a northern tower from west spawn unless you have overwhelming numbers or there is a second attacker creating enough distraction and diverting enough defenders away from the northern towers.

Golem rush on garrison is possible but garrison is easily defended imo despite the number of entry points. The amount of unreachable siege locations means stealth or massively superior numbers are the only real way of breaking an ungraded garrison without holding a northern tower. Garrison watergate is a killzone if your rush is discovered. There are many places to put unreachable arrowcarts and ballistas to kill a force of any size on both inner and outer gate and the lord room is a killzone too if its pre sieged.

East spawn attackers:

You have easy access to south east tower and south east supply camp but your journey north ends here. South east tower can be safe trebbed from east keep. East keep is the most easily defended keep in the game and its very bad if the defending team holds it and upgrades it. The only way to take it is with massively superior numbers after starving it and even then, the inner lord room is a killzone where 15 defenders can reasonably hold against 50 or 60 attackers.

If you have east keep, it is likewise easily defended but of the two northern towers, north east is by far the harder one to assault. The cliffs at north east tower has unreachable ballista/arrow cart spots that make an assault on gate a death trap. You can cat down a wall but must do so between north east tower and garrison leaving you extremely vulnerable to pincer. Generally not possible to take when upgraded unless defending team is divided or seriously lacks numbers/coordination.

Borderland maps are designed to give a favourable advantage to defending teams. This why the most common recommendation is to secure your own borderland first before assaulting anyone else’s borderland. If you can’t secure your own borderland with the forces you have, its highly unlikely you will make much progress as an attacking team unless you have another attacking team to help you divide and conquer the defender.

So all borderland maps should really be played 1 defender vs 2 attackers and the defender’s job is to create conditions that make both attackers go at each other and thus kill themselves. The only legitimate complaints on 2 vs 1 is if both attacking teams have inferior numbers to the defender and attack each other. The only result of that is that you wipe out a weak attacker and have to 1 vs 1 a much bigger defender on a map that gives them a natural advantage.

Also, calling JQ the weak link in T1 is asinine. JQ is the only server that has endured in T1 since launch – SBI got sent down for a week to T2 previously.

You cannot appreciate how strong JQ is until you’ve fought against them for extended periods of time. You can slay them by the hundreds, but their FIRE is endless. Too many of you newcomers think T1 is just a week long battle. It’s an eternal war and JQ is very good at the meta game here.

Guardians can’t pull nearly as effectively as Mesmers can. It’s possible with Line of Warding, but the GS grip lacks proper z-axis support so you can’t really use it unless you’re on an even plane with your target.

AoE dps should be added to the list of qualities valuable in WvW. In this regard Warriors and Guardians deliver in spades. They are also quite resilient despite having a high dps output – which makes them very good at front line combat.

/squadjoin keg

This would put you in my squad, and turn all other commander icons off for you.

Additionally, it lets the commander use /squadinfo to check supply levels and /d to chat with the squad in a different channel/color.

Also, message suppression kicks in when you spam the same text repeatedly. Say it once and you won’t have this problem. If you get squelched, change the verbiage of your message and it will go through once the cooldown is up.

If you type like this:

EVERYONE GET TO HILLS

You can and will get your messages censored. Honestly, you deserve it.

Make sure you report such players using the ingame report function so Arenanet can deal with the individual.

Not trying to condone the practice, but is it really a violation to do that? Do people get banned for it without it being just a result of people spamming reports on them?

Only Arenanet can say with authority, but my assumption is that this is a violation. In pretty much every MMO same faction griefing has been an actionable offense. This is very similar to that. Even though they’re using in-game mechanics, they are using them to grief players from their server which I’d imagine Anet takes issue with.

If you weren’t present during the golem heist, you have no basis to call any accusation baseless. Please don’t continue to comment on any situation in which you have no part of. Continue to focus on situations that involve you. It’s also unwise to accuse any other server without substantial proof. Perhaps that player was also “learning how to build and control siege”. Similar speculations could be made from the incident. Accusing Jade Quarry or SOS of treason without any proof is a huge claim for someone to make and should never be done, especially when trying to take the high road.

This is going to sound rude and I’m sorry for that, but I put far more equity in what someone from [DD] says than whatever you have to say.

If you wanted to bring this to their attention you should have posted it on the SBI forums. It was an issue related only to our server from a notable SBI guild.

The Jackin Kidz debacle isn’t tied to any notable SBI guild and is most likely from one of our competitors (past or present). That doesn’t mean that JQ or SoS approve of this sort of strategy – only that they may be able to help ascertain who this person really is.

Arenanet doesn’t care about the game they’ve spent most of a decade developing. That’s basically what you just said. Think about that for a second. It’s been less than 90 days since GW2 came out. There have been hundreds of fixes and balances since then.

By my measure this would be a successful launch in its own right. Fortunately, we’ve been treated to new content as well. Two special events, new PvP maps/modes, and the endless fun of fractals means there is really no right to complain that Arenanet takes no action.

I get that it can be frustrating when your individual issues aren’t addressed, but try to maintain some perspective and realize how much work they’re doing to improve GW2 in such a short time after launch. I have every confidence that most of the things players are asking for will see fruition down the road.

Less hyperbole and more constructive criticism will help them out.

Some dude called Jackin Kidz was building rams in our keep to waste supplies. Does anyone know if I can find someone in a guild called Fotm? That is where he from.

Sounds like SBI has a few guys giving their server a bad name, dumping golems off the garrison vista (impressive if he was learning how to operate a golem inside the enemy garrison walls that’s a trick I’d like to know) and now this.

The golem issue was addressed in this thread previously. It was a wrongful accusation against one of our oldest and well respected guilds [DD]. “Jackin Kidz” is most likely from JQ or SoS. He’s playing on SBI to waste our keep supply on irrelevant flame rams.

The guild FotM is a PvE guild created on reddit to help players find fractals groups. People usually only represent it when they are trying to form a group, and the guild is comprised of players from every server. Still, this player likely represents another guild so if you have information on which that is, we can work with the community to purge this person from any reputable guilds.

Make sure you report such players using the ingame report function so Arenanet can deal with the individual.

Tier stagnation and how to fix it

It’s supposed to work this way. The goal of the Glicko rating system is to find matchups that are as even as possible. Despite what you think about other servers clearly being able to handle a higher tier, if that were the case then they would be able to earn the necessary rating under the Glicko system.

This is a rating system used for professional rankings. There isn’t anything wrong with it. Once they lock out server transfers for an extended period of time, things will normalize even better than they have already.

Primetime definition

in WvW

Posted by: cold.3946

cold.3946

Introduced as a network broadcasting term, prime-time refers to the period of time with the highest concurrent audience. Typically this is weeknights from 8pm to 11pm local time. These are the most valuable advertising slots and accordingly are home to the most popular TV shows.

Because America has three time zones that span a three hour gap, the NA prime-time for MMOs is usually understood to mean weeknights from 5pm PST to 11pm PST.

I remember back in the day when HOD was 27 – 0 and TA finally broke up becuase no one could beat them.

People on these boards called them every name there was saying the could not stay on top.

Now SBI has been on top for four matches in a row and act like they have been there too long.

You better start playing I know Thanksgiving messed u guys up even though it is three days away.

HoD was the first super-server and a dominant force in early WvW, but this is an apples to oranges comparison. For the bulk of their win-streak matches were only 24 hours in length. By that measure the four week run from SBI is at least comparable especially given the more equitable balance of competitive servers now.

I’m a consistent voice against making excuses. We own our failures, but at the same time you can’t distort history to make yourself feel better either.

This is a welcome to tier 1 thread for SoS. Can we please keep the bruised egos elsewhere. Whatever the reasons, they are in the lead and have put in work to get there.

With BG it was a chorus of voices boasting about their victory preemptively. Look where that got them. I don’t see SoS earning the same reputation, and certainly not on the basis of one poster who probably isn’t even part of their WvW core.

There is a sea of red to recap right now. All of us should be focused on that, not why the map ended up that way.

Week of 11/16: SBI vs JQ vs SOS

Going to need SBI guilds to start queueing now. A weekend 20-30k point deficit is par for the course, but SoS is far more dedicated than any new T1 server we’ve faced.

Many of their forces skipped the PvE this weekend for map control. That is worth our attention considering they have coverage during the same hours we do and seem to only lack EU which we do as well.

Commendable effort and attitude thus far SoS. You guys deserve to be in tier 1, no question.

Friendly reminder: please be sure to use the ingame report feature, as that’s the only way for Arenanet to take action. I’m sure CG is aware of this but perhaps others aren’t.

Bringing exploiters to the attention of their guild officers is also a great way for the community to police itself. SBI and JQ have been very proactive about this in the past. Let’s keep working at it to keep tier 1 free of unscrupulous play.

IMO you guys spend too much time protecting and taking over the puzzle. that’s a big reason you are 2nd place. pull those guys out of there and put them on a tower.

JQ doesn’t need tips from us on how to stay competitive. They are consistent week after week and will always be in contention for first.

I don’t see a problem with people spending a few meaningless hours in WvW however they want. Why even make a post like this? Just because we’re winning doesn’t mean we have to arrogantly become the advice patrol.

Custom screenshot folder or suppress path

in Suggestions

Hello Arenanet!

Here’s a mild quality of life suggestion. Currently when you take a screenshot it prints the full file path in chat. If you take multiple in succession then your Windows username is included in the subsequent captures.

For many people this is their real name. I think from a privacy perspective there is a strong reason to offer an alternative.

Can you please either let us change the screenshot directory, or provide an option where the file path isn’t displayed (something less verbose like “screenshot taken” would suffice).

Thanks!
