Mirage - how to make a special snowflake

Random idea I’d like to see changed about mirage to make it more unique (probably someone suggested already in one form or another):

- Mirage no longer makes clones and phantasms
- Mirage makes those stupid mirrors instead
- mirrors are permanent (or give it like a 60 sec duration to prevent mirror-littering)
- mirrors can be broken/destroyed by enemies (just like illusions)
- mirrors have health (lower if spawned instead of clone, higher if spawned instead of phantasm), and max 3 mirrors can exist at one time
- you or allies can run through mirror and break mirror like now (giving evade)
- enemies running through mirror get 1-2 sec slow (but mirror persists until broken or shattered)
- mirrors can be shattered and it acts the same way kittentering illusions (this could be a bit awkward seeing as mirrors don’t move… needs brainstorming. maybe make mirrors move like Revenant’s iPad)
- balance
- ???
- profit

I don’t know. Excersing my freedom of speech.

Start Mirage over from scratch, PLEASE.

you can move with superspeed when using mirage cloak. I’m no expert but I’d say it’s about the same distance travelled as roll. Also, there’s that small tiny itsy bitsy thing that you can cast when using this evade and choose to stand still. But sure, it’s not better than roll. Just… different. Yup.

No real complaints.
I was afraid mounts would be a total flop, but was positively surprised.
Even bigger map would be even better. Map is otherwise really well done. Would be perfect if there was a whole map sized underground, one or two levels deep (connect to pyramids…).
Careful with the economy. Someone already mentioned in other thread 2 days ago regarding those karma bags from heart vendors; those things will have a terrible effect on the economy if they stay after release.

Mount riding - control problem

It’s not a problem, just different controls. If controls were same as on foot then we would have jerky movements and unrealistic turning around. And that would be pretty much just slapping a skin on superspeed.

Suggestion: Release NPC Outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: martin.1653

martin.1653

I’m like 99% sure most of these outfits you see on NPCs isn’t proper outfits or armour pieces ready to be shipped into gem store. It’s probably just ‘fused’ on the model – meaning NPC model was created with that kind of clothing, instead of clothing being added to it like we add armour on our characters.
I might be wrong, but I think this would be easier and faster way to make NPCs rather than preparing every single of those armour pieces to fit on already made models.
And this way they can more easily outsource 3D modelling NPC models, and don’t have to bother with teaching people how to properly prepare armour pieces to be actually worn on different naked models.
But then again, I might just as well be wrong… In which case, Anet get a grip! It’s a cash mine!

Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

In Black Desert Online I can ride my max level horse with Drift and sprint with no problems ever affecting me, and those two also have light effects and fast jerky movements

I think you misunderstood my post, but I’d like to focus on this part I quoted; I checked the BDO horse gameplay on youtube and to me, that seems like it fits much better to the points I was making comment on. See, this is the reason why I made my previous comment in the first place. People are saying all kinds of stuff is triggering them, but majority of that stuff is already present in the game and as you said yourself, things that trigger you here don’t trigger you in BDO – which is really weird as BDO riding has much more pronounced sickness inducing mechanics based on what people wrote in this thread.
Hence why I said it might be they just need some time to adjust. Minority will never be able to adjust, it’s unfortunate truth, no matter how much riding would get changed.

I hope you do realise that changing mechanics of the riding at this point will cause uproar from the vast majority of people that enjoyed mounts in demo but didn’t make a comment on it.
Camera adjustments – sure, mechanics and animation adjustments – sure, if you wanna open the can of worms.

Wait until next weekend when people try it and then see the explosion of real opinions. What we have been shown so far was underwhelming because the specs weren’t properly shown, nor were they shown in proper environment.
Right now we don’t even have proper theorycrafting material.
If people were not happy you’d hear it much more uproar on forums. Since there isn’t really that many complaints then it means majority has been satisfied. Until next week, at least.

Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: martin.1653

/snip

- What triggered the motion sickness or made me feel worse:

  • Mount and dismount animations
  • Mount’s somewhat bouncy movements
  • The way the mount change directions (lack of strafe option)
  • The running back and forth to save villagers and extinguish the fire. The villagers are way too close to each other so it requires constant camera directions change movements
  • New maps, as in Living Story 3 and Crystal Oasis so far, are way too bright compared to old core Tyria maps. That extra brightness makes my eyes hurt, sometimes light headache and can also cause dizziness
  • Some skills animations turned to more opaque color which also brighten up and made AoE’s more colorful

/snip

Sorry for your situation. I do however need to comment (from perspective of someone who doesn’t have issues) on some of these because they don’t add up on how the rest of the game performs.
“Mount and dismount animations” – this is very basic animation and there are animations in game that are far heavier for eyes. Game is basically a clutterfest of shiny bouncy jerky light flashes. It’s really weird that a simple mount/dismount animation is somewhat more impacting.
- “Mount’s somewhat bouncy movements” – sure, mount is bouncy, but the screen stays perfectly still and mount other than going up-down stays on perfectly straight trajectory.
- “The way the mount change directions (lack of strafe option)” – hard to believe this has any relation to motion sickness, though it would be a good addition to the movement set (provided it’s done properly in line with current moves)
- “The running back and forth to save villagers and extinguish the fire. The villagers are way too close to each other so it requires constant camera directions change movements” – basically every other open world quest, since the start of game.
- " New maps, as in Living Story 3 and Crystal Oasis so far, are way too bright compared to old core Tyria maps. That extra brightness makes my eyes hurt, sometimes light headache and can also cause dizziness " – adjust your monitor, turn on light adaptation setting in options. Turn down some options that make everything glow. I think there are also overlays that change whole game colourings/brightness/contrast.
- “Some skills animations turned to more opaque color which also brighten up and made AoE’s more colorful” – that’s the problem of the game from start. Too much particles in general. One of my friends even turned down playing game because it looked like someone is throwing flashing confetti at screen when fighting.

Just an observation; I can’t really tell that much a difference between running and riding other than it is slightly faster when riding. The mount movement is something that is different from running because it gives the feeling of heaviness, but having mount have snappy movement like when running would be terrible and immersion-ruining (WoW has that snappy movement and it’s terrible).
If we look at the rest of the game, it’s not exactly motion-sickness-free zone. Even the regular running and movement has slight delay and realism compared to many other MMOs. Camera is far more jerky and wild when just running on foot because pointing character fast in any direction is possible, while mounted it’s not (if we exclude left mouse free look).

All in all, maybe some adjusting to the mount over some time period is required to deal with most of the issues. I understand that not all can be treated with ‘adjusting’ but many probably can be.

Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

martin.1653

I don’t want to sound too heartless, but how do you people that get motion sickness deal with other games? Demand from developers to change core mechanics in movement in those games? Because that’s what would have to happen to riding in GW2 in order to remove the cause of your problems. And an ‘option’ and flick of a switch specially made for you is not a fix for this. You can’t have 2 different mount interactions and movement handling in game because one will always be better and have an advantage over the other.

Currently, mounts feel exactly what many people expected it to feel. Natural, heavy and organic when moving around.
Devs might make some minor changes and/or try to mend this issue, but a complete change in mount mechanics is not realistic at this point (2 months before release) and it is unfair toward all the people that enjoy mounts (which are I believe in the vast majority).

If you’re going to compare map sizes then use the full map and not just what’s available in the demo.

Next time before you try to be smart, at least think about it for a second. I put the screenshots for a reason. And if you really think me or anyone else would miss big fat red border that blocks part of the map then I don’t know what to say to you. I didn’t state anything regarding the size of the map, just put two maps side by side with equal amount of zoom. The picture you put, alone tells absolutely nothing.

But the map you posted is missing a ton of content compared to the actual version that will go live. Where’s the point in posting that as a comparison? OP was complaining about the size and you posted this as a comparison, most people would see that as an argument for OP’s case, which in this case is completely off base.

Where’s the point? Point is that it shows the size comparison of playable area and whole Queensdale. You don’t have to put 2 full maps to compare sizes. Size comparisons work in mysterious ways, even partial maps can be compared to full maps. Crazy, I know.

The first impression I have is very negative. If mounts will stay in that condition I will create a ticket to refund my purchase because I dont want to play the addon anymore then.
The movement in gw2 always been precise like a razor blade and now you come and release a movement mechanic that is slow and lethargic like driving a truck pulling 40 tons of weight.
I hate it. I simply hate it. Not to mention deserts are the least location I wanted to have for a setting.

Go play WoW if you want razorblade movement. GW doesn’t have razorblade movement, mounts or no mounts. This is what makes movement in this game feel organic and realistic.
Mount movement is perfect and it feels like 700kg raptor moving should feel like.

And I hope you do realise that wanting a refund because of this thing makes you one of those customers people from retail always talk about on the internet and make fun of.

3. Things being far from each other in my book is a big plus. HoT maps didn’t feel like jungle at all. Everything was so cluttered, there was no feeling of being lost in a jungle. Wherever you pointed your camera there was something, some form of civilisation. These new maps are a step in right direction, but I think they should have pushed the size even more and made it more desolate. We have mounts and waypoints for people who are lazy to run.
For me, it kinda breaks immersion when you have to help someone in a desert because they are lost and hungry, and like 20 seconds of running in any direction, you’re on the road or near settlement. It doesn’t feel right.

And there’s 1/3 of the map still inaccessible. North and south borders we can safely assume will stay. West border at sea will probably slightly move (there’s some thing beyond the border at sea that will probably become accessible).

Thief is uncounterable and OP

I believe that Stealth is a huge issue for video games. It causes more aggravation, frustration and disappointment than any other power – in ALL games, and understandably so.

It is very rare to find a thief so skilled as to shun Stealth entirely. I have heard tell of such amazing players, but that when they were threatened by a large group of players, they resorted to Stealth to escape. Which illustrates how ridiculously powerful Stealth is.

Counterplay is vital to making games fun. Stealth takes away counterplay, therefore Stealth is the opposite of fun.

Budding games developers take note.

Must be why everyone is playing Shadow Arts. Oh wait, nobody is actually playing it. Cause it doesn’t really bring much value for D/P meta thief. Meta thief is actually better with less stealth. Does that mean people intentionally build to be more counterable since? Cause apparently, more stealth = uncounterable = free wins.
Pls.

Biased players shouldn’t discuss balance.

With that said, its a bit hard to deny that Unhindered Combatant might be a little bit over the top. On the opposite end of the coin, it does sort of have a cd since its tied to endurance. So once they run out they can no longer do it. But when you take into consideration a daredevil’s mobility, the ability to disengage and reset fights and the amount of other condi clears they have access to then Unhindered Combatant starts to look a tad bit too strong.

Yes, being tied to endurance also means you sometimes have to sacrifice dodge to clear that condition, even though you don’t need to really dodge.
Strong ability for sure. But game is full of strong abilities. It’s an ability that gives a good value to thief and makes thief have a proper role and be good at that role. Just like any other class has its own role and doing it better than others.
You don’t see 4 thieves in every ranked match during season, but you do see quite often 4 of some other classes in same match.

People need to worry about more pressing issues and not get salty all over the forum whenever they get ganked by thief.

After-patch condi builds (and chill)

in Revenant

Posted by: martin.1653

martin.1653

(for PvP)
I’m wondering about Grenth rune in particular and if the investment into chill duration is worth it.
Here’s 2 general directions I’m thinking about (both involve Deadshot amulet as it looks like the best bet)
- Tormenting runes – you cap on torment duration without sigil (extra sigil slot), 2 torment stacks on heal
- Grenth runes – no cap on torment duration, must use 25% torment duration sigil (82% total torment duration), chill when using heal (2 torment stacks from trait), and you get sweet 67% duration on chill.

Main question; is chill any good to be investing into it? Since UA is now pretty much biggest damage for condi revs, it seems to me that chill investment isn’t that terrible. Additionally to OP chill on UA, you get that extra second of chill on axe 4, guaranteed chill when using heal and chance to chill when youget hit (could save you once in a full moon when trying to disengage).
Thoughts?

Lol, so funny to see people getting frustrated and angry over something nobody knows nothing about yet. Just shows the amount of trash thieves have to endure for mere existing in the game.
Some people just can’t handle the fact they are terrible and at some point got their ass handed to them by thief.

Thief getting 1200/1500 range weapon? Get over it!
Thief will do decent range damage just like EVERY other class can? Go cry under mom’s skirt.

As for people crying that it will be OP because it will have insane burst out of stealth, look up power burst mesmer with or without PU, doesn’t matter, one shots whatever it wants out of stealth.

You have selective reading skills. People aren’t affraid of a long range weapon in itself. They are affraid of an invisible gunflame with top mobility.

As for your mesmer comparison, I wasn’t aware such a mesmer was a 1200-1500 range gimmick…

At least the attacks that can 100-0 you from stealth ATM (while really anoying) requires you to go within melee range to perform them. Thus leaving you “vulnerable” to counter attacks. What counter attacks do you have vs a 1500 range players that can disapear again and already has the best mobility?

Yes, we do not know for sure what it will come down to, but the existing thief skills, weapons, and trait lines are known. Unless the new specialized trait line modifies what exist I would say people are expressing VERY reasonable fears. The new spec is called DEAD eye. As in, I don’t give kisses, I kill.

No, I don’t have selective reading skills, I just tell you how it is, even before the leak, when people were speculating, there was this irrational fear and warmongering against rifle thief. Most of the people completely ignoring the fact that thief today is what it is ONLY because of daredevil traitline. And guess what? Elite traitlines can’t be combined.

Please then, explain to me how will thief have high mobility and high stealth access outside DD?

And as Sly said after you, people like to ignore the fact that ranger exists. Ranger is a sniper already (1500 range), with more health and a companion acting as meat shield. Also, has stealth galore.

Even if thief gets gunflame-like damage attack from stealth, it would be completely acceptable and fine. You know why? Because warrior has gunflame. And because warrior has everything else double the stuff thief has. At 1500 range if you’re not 1v1 against warrior preparing gunflame, you will get gunflame in face, stealth or no stealth.

As for Mesmer, what difference does it make when you get insta downed? He can port on you and kill you, or just kill you in melee range and port away like nothing happened.

Rifle thief demonising is really getting out of hand.

I really wish that anet really does stupidly op rifle thief just so you people could have some real material to complain about.

So about those leaks earlier today...

in Thief

Posted by: martin.1653

martin.1653

The point of elite specs is to change the style of play. Granted ANet failed here previously with Daredevil, that’s not the intent. A sniper, game-design-wise is the worst possible spec they could implement. Ranged burst on the thief is a terrible idea for how much innate mobility it has on top of its range. People playing lb ranger and rifle war have lower mobility, and Acro is basically the Defense line on warrior at this point.

Your post is frankly terribly misinformed. If you put attacks equivalent to backstab or vault on a ranged weapon people will be hitting twice as hard as glass GF warrior while having the safety of shadowstep and withdraw.

How is my post terribly misinformed? If anything you’re the one sharing around misinformation and hyping people for no reason that rifle will be doing 10k crits with each hit. All we have so far is the knowledge that it will be rifle and probably 1500 range (based on sniper rifle on the artwork). Nothing else other than that is known. As I mentioned in my post, taking rifle as main weapon will be paired with some heavy tradeoffs regarding mobility (based on current state of game).
Unless rifle itself will bring something regarding the mobility, picking up rifle would mean you lose your best line of defense. It’s only natural that you gain somewhere else, and that somewhere else is range and damage.
If you think that teleport on 40 second cooldown == mobility and broken thief, then I think you are the one that’s terribly misinformed.
Right now, you can make 1500 range sniper out of warrior and ranger very easily, but you don’t really see them breaking the game even though warrior can literally one shot basically anything in game given the right circumstances, and both of them have significantly more HP than thief (on top of that, warrior wears heavy armour, and ranger packs an annoying meat-shield that does more damage on its own than many players).

So about those leaks earlier today...

in Thief

Posted by: martin.1653

martin.1653

Thief IS a selfish class and doesn’t need any kind of support other than killing effectively. If you wanna play support then you don’t pick thief. It is that easy. Thief is assassin and rifle is just another way to play that role. I didn’t pick thief to go around tossing boons and heals.

Without DD it will have kitten mobility, because you need to consider, if you’re already taking rifle and rifle is range, it’s highly unlikely you want shortbow as your second weapon, because if something comes in your melee range you’re as good as dead if you’re stuck on SB or rifle. Sure you can port away with SB 5, but there’s a cooldown on weaponswap, and there’s initiative you won’t have to port away far. Best case scenario you port 1800 range away and disengage, waiting for weaponswap cooldown and re-engage with rifle. This is very slow gameplay and not good value.

Shadowstep and Blinding Powder while useful, will be hardly op in terms of mobility/stealth access, due to long cooldowns. You might get a kill when using those cooldowns, but then second person engages you and you’re stuck.
Outside DD and shortbow, thief has barey any good mobilty, so reasoning rifle will be broken with high damage doesn’t really stand. If you take away everything else good thief has going on, then you’re left with only high damage, and that’s ok. It’s a tradeoff, not an op buff.

Ranger is a sniper. With more HP. With a meat shield running in front of it. It’s only natural Thief can pull off at least same damage as ranger, but in reality should do more due to being more damage oriented class.
Rifle thief will probably have exactly 0 access to stealth, so there’s that.

The map glorious. The map is massive. Instanced part (story) is also jaw-dropping. Get it? Dropping. Jaw… Heh, heh he.

Now, if only we could push the size just a little bit more. For example, make it triple the size of this map (in all directions).

Let's talk placements matches

in PvP

Posted by: martin.1653

martin.1653

I dont get the whole “placement matches are basically root of the bad matchmaking” argument.

This season I started in Gold1 and made it to Plat 1 by playing ~70% of my games solo.
Last season I started in Silver 2 (due to kittening up my placements) and at one point even got close to Silver 1 ….and you know what…. while almost playing exclusively solo (~90%), I still managed to reach Plat 1.

Granted ….during both seasons I played about ~350 games. But still, if you really are good enough, you WILL eventually climb. Blaming poor ranking alone on bad placements seems like a really weak excuse to me.

So, you’re saying that it was ok for the system to force you to play 350 games to reach the division you belong to? This could probably be a 50 game climb if you got 2 more wins in placement and got placed in Gold 2, for example. Is it fair that some people need to go through grind based only on 10 random placement matches?
You still think my argument is totally bad? Should some people really grind 350 games to reach their skill level division while others only need 10 placement games?

Current system can’t be good when in any given division there is huge gaping hole between best and worst players.

I’m aware of this soft reset, but how do you soft reset people that make their first step into the game? Or people that got lucky and got carried in their first set of placement matches? It’s amazing how bad some people are in silver, which makes you wonder how bad people must be in bronze; and to contrast that, I’ve seen good players losing their kitten on map chat because their was a clear gaping hole between their skill and skill of clueless people that they got paired with. Same goes for higher tiers. Just watch some higher ranked players when they stream. Some people in their matches are worse than people I encounter in my silver matches. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. But that’s how it is due to placement matches.
And more on the faultiness of this soft reset of mmr; last season I basically started PvP, and I got placed in same tier after my placement matches. Now, this season I can safely say I play much better and understand rotations much more than I did before, yet I had the same luck of being placed at exact same spot in low silver. All because I happened to have ‘luck’ of having 6:4 win:lose ratio in placements in both scenarios.

Whatever the case is, this system is really faulty and having someone’s season be determined solely by placement matches is a really bad system and needs a change.
Placement needs to be dynamic throughout the whole season or everyone starts season at same rating. There needs to be some system implemented that can quantify someone’s gameplay and maybe give boost in rating point gain if he/she excels at lower tiers or some penalty if he/she is bad at higher tiers. Volatility at start of season will always happen, but toward end of season people need to have something to grasp on, and seeing some people get away with 1600 rating and worse win lose ratio than yours while you’re on 1300, just leaves people salty and not want to compete any more.

Ok, end of S6 has come, everyone got their rank, some more deserving some less.
Other than the highly commented rank point issues, there’s barely any talk about placement matches. Why is that? I understand that placement matches are played at the start of season and by now everyone has forgotten about them, but placement matches are basically root of the bad matchmaking in this game. Everything starts in those 10 matches and spirals out of control from there.

Player’s whole season depends on random chance of these 10 matches. This is reason many players left game because they were placed too low and can’t leave the low ratings without playing 500 games in the season. On the other hand there is people in platinum that don’t have basic grasp on how to rotate around map. So good platinum players are getting really bad teammates which makes really bad and random games.

Why is this system of 10 games still in place?

What are the suggestions for improving the placements and is there maybe better way to rank people at the start of season?

I personally got placed in low silver (with 6 losses and 4 wins), played 135 games this season, got 74:61 win-lose ratio, and now I’m jumping around high silver. I play exclusively solo so I got that little bit of extra randomness in my games. If I wanted to climb, I would have to play more than 500 matches, and then I would reach a point that some people reached in just 10 games during placement because they were lucky and got had 6 wins and 4 losses.
I really like PvP in this game and like watching it a lot on twitch, but this game’s system is really demoralising and if nothing changes regarding the placement matches for next season I’m sure many people will just stop playing because system is so unfair and there’s not much you can do.

Thief damage out of control

Anet pls delete thieves from game. It’s getting out of control having 4 thieves in every single game. I play DH and I can’t hold point against thief, their damage is just too much and their HP is crazy high with Barbarian amulet. Not to mention thief has much more mobility than me, my traps most of the time can’t even one-shot him and they can even teleport! Every time a game goes south, team blames me, but what can I do agains such unstoppable force thief is known to be. Thieves just spend their whole game just camping mid and cleaving everything there having it easy time.
