Fix stealth attack for thieves

in Thief

Skill already has lots of requirements for it to even be useful, not to mention that couple swings with autoattack hits harder. Most other classes have much higher hitting attacks that have zero requirements to use and/or land which makes people arguing pro nerf look silly. This nerf was uncalled for and I’m guessing it’s coming from some developer that got ganked really badly so he wanted his payback.

Piercing would be nice. Ricochet seems slightly silly for pistol. I mean, pistol round bouncing around? Pls.

A bullet ricochet makes more sense than an arrow… just sayin.

well, I’m not saying arrow ricochet makes sense.. Although, it could happen probably more easily if arrow hits the hard surface, while bullet could just weld onto the armor. BUT that’s beside the point.

Piercing and after passing through first target maybe spray targets behind in a cone.

Also, replace Pistol 2 with something that hits single target, but hits like a truck. And there you have it! Non-dull weapon set!

Mystic Coin Cost

225 gold for a stack and you can only get 20 a month talk about a gold sink. These should be more available and not that expensive.

so you can get 60 gold a month from doing dailies, then another 50 or so from rewards , then you have your 20 mystical coins. that’s free gold, the direct opposite of a gold sink.

When you sell coins at TP, there is loss in gold due to TP cut. That gold is lost in the wast voids of Anet vaults hidden deep under Rata Novus..

Gold from dailies is opposite of that, it’s gold generated out of nowhere and causing slow inflation.

Duels, Inspections and Vehicals

Inspecting would simply ruin the community. Anet made some really good choices to prevent community in going full cancer and they should stick to that.
When I started to play GW I was baffled why you can’t inspect, trade, gank in open world, duel… but pretty fast I realised how much this means to keep the community civilised.
The moment you give players reasons/powers to shame, put down and insult other players based on the gear is the moment the community becomes cancerous.

If you argue that simple things like inspecting wouldn’t be massively abused just means you don’t really know how people work.

What can a thief do?

Hello I am looking for a class that requires a fair bit of thought when doing all content I recently rolled revenant and i liked the mobility but i found it kind of stagnant with weapons and builds. I was wondering how versatile is a theif I’m not looking for only x build is meta but overall is there a fair few that can be played around with?
How do they faire in WvW and Pve?
What roles can they fill? And is it generally daredevil or bust? (I kinda like bunkers)

Thief is very interesting and immersive to play and keep you always on the edge because it’s not forgiving to mistakes. If you want bunker don’t look at thief because thief is anything but the bunker. You might manage to make some bunker build but you will hit like wet noodle. Evade builds are more possible, but again you will lack damage.

If you want tanky stay revenant. It has somewhat thief-esque feel, but can take a good beating and still do lots of damage. I played for some time pure condi rev (dire/trailblazer, with Balthazar runes) and the survivability was much better than thief, could tank stuff I could only dream to tank on thief and I could still do serious damage (and much more AoE). On HoT maps durng events I could just jump into middle of everything without fear that I’ll get downed.

So how will that help the other sets that DP gets nerfed thats will only make Theif worse buff the other sets instead of nerfing our only viabale set?

Because they have to buff thief if they nerf D/P.

Hahahahahahahahahaahahaahahahahahahahaha. Ah, that was a good one.

Nerfing stealth won’t affect other weapon sets as much as d/p, so why would they then go and buff other weapon sets? We will just get another crippled weaponset.

Reading this thread I feel like there is at least 10 developers pitching in because of how you all set your mind at the idea that if d/p gets nerf everything else will become competitive all of the sudden.

So much responses in favour of stealth nerf, but not a single proper argument why this would be a good thing and why they should implement it.

Making thieves have limited stealth makes them just less special. Thieves can’t rely on pumping out boons or taking few good hits. Stealth is our mechanic that separates us from the rest of the professions (for now), and stealth is in a lot of situations our only defensive mechanism. Necro has 40k HP and nobody is crying to gut that mechanic. Rangers can hit from 1500 range and nobody is crying for range nerfs (plus pets). Elementalists can cycle through the whole apocalypse of skills to throw at you. All other classes have something special, so why would thief be less special and have its stealth nerfed so much that other classes could potentially even outstealth us? We’re not best in dealing damage. We got the short stick when it comes to health. Our range is worst in game. So what are we excelling at so much that only mechanic we are strong in needs a proper gutting?

Calling for this nerf because you people hope for buffs in other aspects is… I don’t know. Stupidity? Fool’s hope? Are you people here first time? You never been through Anet’s update? I’m really trying hard to see what is the real reason here for this topic. Goes so far that it looks like an elaborate troll.

And another thing, if a D/P thief stacks 18-20 seconds of stealth – what is that thief left with? Zero initiative. 10+ seconds of stealth doesn’t come for free and there is a big setback for it. Not to mention that if thief goes for stealth stacking it’s usually to run. So I guess, after all, I was wrong in the second paragraph: we are best at something, and that is running around waiting for out small window of chance while the big boys do the job.

A Plea to Karl!!!!

Actually, on a second thought, give us 1 sec icd on stealth, sure why not… BUT then in return give easy access to 25 stacks of might, easy access to protection, aegis, perma resistance, and perma stability.
edit: throw in some AoE alacrity or quickness for good measure.
Oh and I forgot 19k HP, please.
Because if some classes can have that why shouldn’t thief have it a well, as thief will be pretty dead stealth-wise.

Has it really come to this? Has it really come to the point where people are asking for nerfs on a viable build so they would feel like other builds are stronger and can keep up the pace with d/p?

The second they would implement this ICD thing there would be a huge outcry from the whole thief community, everyone in this thread included. But then it would be too late. Just like it’s too late for backstab. I know nobody asked for backstab, but people very fast accepted it and some even said it was a good thing. Just like in that story where fox couldn’t reach the grapes to quench the thirst, so it said they are probably sour.

Many other professions are catching up on stealth with us and now you wanna nerf our stealth even more?

Better ask for buffs on less used weapons/skills/traits rather than gutting one of the few relatively decent things we still have.

Juggle makes an in-depth point, and don’t forget, a Thief spamming SB5 to get out of dodge is a Thief that’s not dealing damage. If all you have to do is get close to a Thief to make him stop attacking, that’s a pretty effective counterplay that doesn’t require doing anything to the Thief himself.

Exactly this. And then on top of that some would want terrible visual tells when thief is doing attack, rooting hen attack is performed etc. Come on people, I know thief is blamed for all the woes in this game, but it’s just a rifle they are getting (maybe), not a tank.

To make Snipers strong without being OP, they may have to actively reduce the Theif’s innate movement options, like giving some penalty to any shadowstepping, or applying a temporary debuff in which you cannot shadowstep, applying reveal to prevent Stealth, things like that. It would mean that you couldn’t engage in the usual tactics while playing as a Sniper.

That’s why the overhead tell would be good, you don’t need to be paying attention to the Thief, you don’t even have to know where he is, you’d just see the target and could react accordingly.

So, you’re saying in order for thief to get a rifle it would need to be crippled in every other possible way?

No need to pay attention to thief? Should we then just dunk every rifle thief in tar and feathers so everyone knows what to avoid?

These arguments are ridiculous. With so much power creep that happened in game, thief is the only one that in order to get somewhat strong range damage needs to be made useless on all other fronts? Pls.

Yea, and GF is balanced why? Because of its huge visual tells. Take those away and it’s ridiculously overpowered. Oh wait, that’s what stealth conveniently does.

Thief has stealth, warrior has immunity to everything. So there’s that. And warrior has double hp. And armour.

No matter the GF visual tell, if you’re not paying attention to the warrior you gonna get shot. Same thing with any one-shot build. If you’re focused on something/someone else you will get killed no matter how long they wind up their attack.

Why people keep assuming that rifle will be 1 hit kill weapon? That would quickly cause backlash from community and devs would have to nerf it patch after patch until it will be trash level and people finally happy.
But something with the power of warrior rifle with increased range is completely fine (keep in mind how squishy thieves are compared to warriors).

As someone mentioned before, rangers have 1500 range and nobody is really complaining about it, so why should thief be any different? Gap closers are in game for a reason. Shooting from stealth? Anyone (and I really mean anyone) can do it provided they manage to enter stealth (and we all know thieves aren’t special when it comes to entering stealth). It’s nothing special, and you get revealed after your hit.

Many of you already complaining about spec without even seeing it in action and without even knowing we will get rifle as next weapon.

Typically the association to a “sniper” involves firing one shot and killing your target right then and there.

Doing this from stealth is just busted. Bring a full zerk berserker GF friend maximizing damage into WvW, have him run SoF or other major adrenaline sources, and play pure support to give him stealth in combat. Seems strong, right? Now give the warrior permanent stealth access and no need to build adrenaline. That’s effectively the sniper concept in a nutshell.

A comparison to the ranger isn’t a proper one, either, since it both has less scaling damage sources for its bursts than the thief does, and its bursts are all primarily multi-hit channels, revealing the player from stealth and allowing for the enemy to dodge and negate most of the damage. A single burst from stealth doesn’t allow this.

Ok, then call it ‘Long-range-gun-guy’ so it won’t be associated with 15k crits. People here are making funeral for the spec before it even got announced based on assumptions like yours. Spec could be bleed/vuln/utility oriented, not pure raw killing power.
Gunflame already does unholy crits, but it’s balanced nevertheless. Sure, you might be the unlucky zerker eating the load every once in a while in WvW, but many classes have easy access to one-shot combos without too much hassle. But there is usually large caveat to that – they are one trick pony and we all know one trick ponies aren’t really meta.
And since you mention perma stealth, tell me please how would rifle thief have that? If there isn’t stealth skill on the weapon itself like CnD is, then there will be little to none stealth with the spec. And pretty sure they wouldn’t give smoke field access to rifle (and even with it, you can’t leap as you won’t have Daredevil).

In close range people would probably just switch to D/P and finish the job rifle started.

Stealth before the shot isn’t the issue. Its that Thief is hands down the SINGLE BEST DISSENGAGE PROFESSION IN THE GAME.

The only thing remotely keeping them in balance is that for the most part they have to dive in to make kills. That’s the risk for the substantial reward. Eliminate that risk, and you deserve NO rewards.

This statement is actually slightly funny. Ask yourself: why does thief need so much disengage to begin with?
Easy, if it stays in fray too long it dies. If someone just looks at you angrily you lose half your hp. Sneeze and you’re dead. You can’t have long range rifle and then expect no defensives whatsoever.

Although giving Thieves a reliable 1200 ranged weapon would be very nice, especially for zerg modes (general PVE and WvW blob fights) I don’t see how this can be any different to Warrior Rifle. I’d love to have a “sniper spec” with a long range snipe skill but that’s what Warrior Rifle is all about.

Ummm, multiple classes have greatswords/swords/axes/whatevers and they are all completely different when used.

If all rumor is true, Rifle will be broken OP in beta testing for Thief. It’ll be toned down before live to specific use case only (probably only useful from stealth) since it’ll rely on low damage and/or high initiative costs to balance.

Or they could simply make it deal reasonable damage and not 10k hits each shot? Also, that’s what beta testing is all about! Balancing and fixing stuff.

Yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

Game has literally endless possible builds at disposal

That’s not just his opinion. If there’s one thing missing from GW1 then it’s build variety. Now you’ve got 5 skills on a weapon which can’t be changed (not every class can use every weapon) + 1 healing skill.
What’s left is 3 utility skills you can freely choose from + 1 elite skill.
Try to get a few useful, unique builds with that.

Every profession has multiple weapons that can be switched in many cases, you pick any combination of 3 from the given traitlines, and then on top of all that there is very large gear/rune customisation. Just because something carries label ‘meta’ doesn’t mean that everything else is bad. Nobody will ever put ‘meta’ label on some obscure build, but that build might be perfect for a certain tasks in WvW for example.

The whole talk about meta builds is really pointless. Not all meta builds are equally effective. Some are op and other are very situational. So where does one actually draw the line what qualifies as meta and what doesn’t?

Yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

Game has literally endless possible builds at disposal, some better some worse. There is even few meta builds per profession. You meantion other MMOs… but let me remind you that other MMOs are mostly limited by the type of armor you must use (in WoW for example if you are warrior you get strength plate items and that’s it. Zero customisation in that regard), and you’re also limited by the attacks you get (you pick Protection talents and that’s it. Attacks are always same, you have no control over anything and your talent build is either PvP or PvE. One single build with minor variations). GW gives you option to make a healer, tank, support, dps out of anything (some better, some worse). Seriously, combinations are unlimited. Meta builds will always exist everywhere. They aren’t necessarily best in damage, they are just well optimised and balanced when it comes to dealing damage and surviving.

You can’t expect a build that is randomly picked traits with non-fitting armor to be equal to build that has carefully picked and tested combination of traits, armor, runes, weapons and playstyle.

Assuming they won’t allow choosing 2 elite traitlines together (because it would be silly and overpowered), long range rifle would be very fitting to the thief and a logical step forward for the class.
People in this thread are over-exaggerating, because right now warrior has a proper rifle build and it can hit like a truck and do one-shots with 1500 range. I see no reason why thief couldn’t have something like that which isn’t op and still usable. With a thief twist, of course, which would be added blinds, stealth and shadowstepping.
Damage here is not even the issue as the numbers are easily changed and balanced. People think that if the specialisation will be called sniper/orsomethinglikethis that it automatically needs to do 20k crits and kill everything in one shot. Sure, it will need to hit at least as much as warrior (remember that thieves have lower HP and lower armor so it’s only natural that damage is at least on the level), but even if it did hit slightly more it wouldn’t really pose an issue because weapon would be slow to compensate and at close range you’d be switching to regular melee anyways.

It’s a shame that pistols and rifles are so neglected in the game and usually pushed to the margin.

It’s a battleground – red it’s hostile.

Sure there are ‘spots’ that are kinda known duel spots, but why should everyone playing WvW care about that and keep in mind and always have dilemma whether to jump in to some fight or not when passing those areas?

If you can’t respect another player’s way of playing wvw, why should they respect yours?

Why should everyone care about flipping towers or keeps?

If it’s not affecting your game play, leave them be.

Since you put it this way, then if there’s someone not respecting someone then it’s duellers taking spots on map that is about flipping towers and keeps and generally making confusion among some players passing by. It’s affecting everyone’s gameplay on map, if we gonna go so far.

Make it instant and teleport. At least 600 range. It’s only fair considering it costs 2 more ini than SS, takes ages to cast and then it hits like wet noodle.
Or give D/D another skill in the place of skill 3. Something like steal, but with baseline damage and/or stealth.

That sounds great at first thought, but as a sword/dagger player that feels a bit like overkill as I already have sword #2 and shadowstep along with steal and whatever you want to tack on to steal in combination. I can think of some really cool stuff to do with it, like make it a ranged dagger throw and make dagger o/h fully ranged or make it stealth on demand, but it all seems to overstep the balance. I’d be happy just having a reliable condition clear or something handy on it to free up some trait options maybe.

Stealth on demand should have been our F2 ability from the very begining of game. I remember when I started playing, I picked thief as first character and was so confused when I couldn’t find a simple way to enter stealth. We’re supposed to be stealth class, but we’re not even good at that.

Sword 2 has return option. I wouldn’t mind that thief would have shadowstepping galore. Different shadowstep for different purpose.

I am literally part of the working class that lives pay check to pay check, that’s why I play MMOs as opposed to blowing 500 every two years on a gaming console along with 50 to 60 every week on a console game that is played through in a week or less.

I had better money management skills when I was 7 and my only income was when I visited grandparents or my birthday.

Do you even listen to what nonsense you’re saying? How did you even survive so far?
So you’re saying that as soon as you get paycheck you run to spend it all and then you walk around with no money for 2 weeks?
You knew something like this might happen so you could have set aside few bucks every month, but nooooooooo, it’s easier to blame someone else for your incompetence regarding the money. Do you even realise that a lot of people get paycheck once a month? What about those people? I’m one of them. Everyone in my country gets it once a month. We all know how to plan minimum of 1 month ahead. Cause we’re not incompetent with money. Should we raise hell because this sale come at the end of month?
And if 1 week after your paycheck you have no money left, then please explain how would you survive that week if you would spend it on game before buying groceries? That 25$ you have to cut from somewhere. Are you gonna eat less next two weeks?

Anet didn’t have to do this sale, the game could have stayed 50$ forever and nobody would bat an eye. It’s stupidly low price considering you pay it once and then you play forever. But as soon someone gives you a finger you reach to tear out the whole arm and scream like a brat when you don’t get it and because things don’t go your way.
You try to sound like a responsible adult, but all I see in your posts is inability to manage your money properly and blaming other for your problems.

So this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQFAWl8MhSnY3TwzJQ/EL4EWXdJHUEmfgVwO42BIA0gA-T1BBQBWT5nx0BEgLAAAeAAIT9nVqEkf7PQKAWFZB-w
Basically, you hit like wet noodle but heal like a mofo. Pretty much everything heals you. Smack someone – heal, smack someone with critical – heal even more, evade – heal..
Option is also D/D for faster attacks (thus faster heals) and access to stealth with CnD.
As a bonus you can’t get one hit due to stats on gear. Well, most of the time anyway.

Since you mention amulet in there, instead of Nomad armour you’d use Paladin amulet for sPvP. Idea is same (possibly even more healing cause of high crit chance), but you’re more easily mowed down due to lower vitality and toughness.

Well, game is as is already focused on dealing majority of damage with skill 1, so this wouldn’t hurt THAT much damage-wise, but could open some interesting utility-focused builds. If you go D/D, you rarely use skill 4, and skill 3 is only if you’re condi. Skill 5 gets decent mileage, but it’s not like it’s your main damage source. Dagger thief for example could go venom share/trapper build. You would possibly get much more interactive and dynamic gameplay than you would get with 2 daggers.
Condition/trapper/ghost/whateveristhename builds would see some major boom in this scenario.

BUT, better idea would be to make 1 handed weapons have 5 weapon skills. Now this would pretty much double the number of possible builds.

Pulsating Pestilence is broken and useless. Don’t use under any circumstance until it get’s reworked or fixed.
Maybe something like this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQJApnn3geNSuQvJRboHlsP0kS4I6SJ4EtrklTlxO93rPNgEWYNmb+B-TJhAABjVGA6TAAAPAAY2fAA
Your build seems way too much focused on crit which i think is too much sacrifice if you go for condi, and not enough is invested in actual condi (you said ‘pure’ condi in title). Carrion amulet with 25k HP will save you much more than 500 something toughness.
Unfortunately Glint is must have, and only legend that teams nicely with Mallyx.

Balthazar rune may not look like much, but those burns hurt. Really hurt. Especially when you have traited Diabolic Inferno + 2.5s daze with Momentary Pacification on elite use.

(it seems to me that Momentary Pacification is really underrated. It’s basically 2.5 sec stun (fine, you can run around, but still 2.5 seconds of being headless chicken), and with 10 sec ICD pairs very nicely with Diabolic Inferno. It can disable half of enemy group and leave them wondering what happened while your condis eat them alive.)

As LordKuru said: Make it PvE map. It had gorgeous visuals and with a little bit of tweaking it would be awesome for just running around and exploring. Toss in there some strong mobs to fight and it could see some traffic. Maybe make it something like map where legendary mobs (like that legendary giant in Drytop) would spawn at random and wreck stuff until defeated. And later on could be upgraded to have more and more events related to Mists and things like that.
Plus, all the work that went making it will not be pointless.

They already have a pve wvw map, its called silverwastes. And that’s a desert too.

They already have 1 expansion. No need to make another one, right?
Anyways, map is there, why not use it to expand the game instead of discarding it. If you don’t wanna play it, that’s fine, but there are people that will play it. Having options is a wonderful thing.

Don’t be disappointed when you find its an on/off type map like SW/AB/DS where its either 100% dead most of the time or 100% full whenever its worth playing.

To convert it over to pve would require so much overhaul that it would probably be easier to start from scratch while simultaneously avoiding the “DBL is baddddd” stigma. Unless the community actually wants a zerg driven meta map that promotes pvd and is completed from start to finish in ~20min.

I’d be happy if they just used map as is and added some random spawn points for champs and legendary mobs. Some would be soloable, some would require smaller groups. No need to make it like DS at all. Just a simple map where people could come, run around and search for champs and nodes. Nothing more nothing less. Later on it could have more fleshed out events if map traffic is decent enough.
Even if there isn’t that much interest in map, we would basically get one extra map for various shenanigans and Anet gets a week off for releasing large amount of content for basically zero effort.

Pulsing blind on Embrace the Darkness sounds awesome.
Another idea would be that Embrace the Darkness upkeep would cost significantly less making it possible to pretty much have 100% up-time on the skill, but still have a significant impact on energy regen.

Ascended armor discussion

Okay before you guys start saying that ascended armor takes just the right amount of time Please dont get angry at the people who dont agree with you.

Heres my problem yes ascended armor should take time and defication but should it be so long that it takes some people over a month to achieve. And alot of the time getting it is just saving up the gold and laurels to get the recipes. Now the argument ive been hearing is that ascended armor should take time because it keeps noobs from raiding therefore making a better experience. My counterargument is that logging once a day to get dailies is not a increase or decrease in skill and in fact will let those noobs get to raiding easier. To get to my point is i want ascended armor to not require laurels, but instead some kindve fun challenge to complete with a party of five that rewards the recipes, and then requiring youto still make your own ascended gear. Now i know that laurels are the most valuable currency in the game and all, but i dont believe that logging in once a day to get my ascended armor is fun it feels stupid and grindy two things arena net tries their best to remove from the game.

Now i dont know if my idea is any better but i drastically want this system to change for the better as many cannot experience some of the game without ascended.

1 month is too long to acquire best available armor in game? And laurels are limiting you? I’m sorry, but this is just ridiculous.
So, what I’m getting from you post is that people who start playing game should have best available armor in game in less than month. Because if you play for a month you should have all the laurels from daily login chests needed to get recipes.
Try any other MMO and see if you will be able to get best available gear within one month of relatively casual playing. In most cases best gear available will be locked behind raid bosses you won’t be able to access until you’re already someone in that game with guild backing you up and taking you there. And even then you still need to battle the strongest boss of all – RNGeesus.
Here, you can get literally buy the whole armor, and when you finally get it, you’re not stuck with stats and you can change them at any time.

So no, 1 month is not too much time for getting armor that will last you to the end of your playing days in this game.
