I figured it out guys!

So Foulbear Kraal had several bugs involved with it. Some events get stuck, some NPCs end up in the wrong place, the gate was named wrong and sometimes the meta event doesn’t show on the screen when its active.

Guess what? After looking into the issue, THEY FIXED IT! The gate now correctly says “Ogre Gate” instead of “Oger Gate!”

Yes yes, I know. It’s more complicated than that. I can sympathize. I just thought it was too funny.

I heard that in the language called Positivity, Heart of Thorns actually translates out to precursor crafting, guild halls and new weapons/skills/and classes.

However, in it’s sister language called Negativity, Heart of Thorns means “More Trahearne” in English.

Strangely enough, the languages have both been known to be right from time to time despite their vastly different cultures.

Anyone else ONLY play humans?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DarkWasp.7291

No, in fact I rerolled my one human character to Asura. Humans are boring, there’s nothing distinctive about them. Norn have great cultural armor, Asura get all kinds of great cultural and distinctive looks, Charr aren’t my thing but I get them. Sylvari are… um… interesting. But humans are ‘meh.’

I tolerated it with my Ele for a long time because she was smokin’ hot, but as time has gone on human females in light armor or light-armor-like outfits have managed to become something like 50% of all characters in the game. Short ones. Why are they ALL short? I don’t get it. At least my human is max height for a smidge of uniqueness.

Please wait a moment while Miss Tyria, Miss Shaemoor and Miss Kryta come up with an official retaliation to your claims.

Mordrem Invasion Update: 11 September 12:30 PM

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

Seeing as there is already a lot of feedback on what went wrong, I’d like to highlight a few things that what went right and how it can be improved/incorporated in the future:

1. Personal progress: While I can’t disagree with the suggestions to base the event more on world success and less on personal events tagged, I do feel personal progress is important. Just because a world failed does not mean an individual player could not rise to the challenge.

When personal accomplishment is rewarded, it encourages people to do well. When personal accomplishment is not rewarded, it encourages people to server-hop instead.

FOR THIS EVENT: Capping the max reward at 10 personal events would have been better. To discourage Tag-N-Leave, add extra rewards per 10 mapwide events completed.

2. Bringing back old rewards: Items that we could have missed should always come back. Exclusivity in items is a common argument, but I feel exclusive items should only be rewarded for skill and accomplishment. Not being online at a certain period of time does not constitute a good enough reason to not be able to get an item.

FOR THIS EVENT: The time allotted to attain these items is too short. I hope to see more permanent methods in the future.

3. Utilizing lower level zones for high level purposes: All I can say is that it feels great to have a reason to visit those maps again.

FOR THIS EVENT: It would be nice to see something like mordrem blooms added as a permanent reward to these zones.

4. Thirty minutes on, thirty minutes off: Scarlet’s 45 minute events felt a bit long, but this 30 minute schedule may be just the right spot. Furthermore, not having to wait 2-3 hours between every consecutive attempt is nice for people with real-life schedules.

FOR THIS EVENT: It should have been made clear in the announcement that the invasions weren’t starting at 9:00 but rather 9:30 instead.

PSome people with high-spec computers are so hyper-sensitive that they lose their kitten over a mere temporary drop in fps.

Which is a concern still.

People going to Antarctica straight from Florida are probably more likely to freeze to death than anyone who’s already been there for months.

One man’s 20 dropped to 15 is another man’s 60 dropped to 45.

Suggestion: player camera improvements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DarkWasp.7291

It’s hard to say.

I’m enjoying first person immensely, but due to the 360 nature of this game, I find zooming out for serious fights necessary. It’s not a bad thing, because you realize your character still has really cool animations.

One time it bugged out while I was chopping a tree and my axe showed. It looked really neat. Though other times my own skill effects almost gave me a headache.

I think we have to take first person for what it is. Just (finally) a way for us to see the world from up close and also take nice scenic screenshots. While simple combat is surprisingly viable at that zoom level, combat is the one part of the game truly optimized for third person.

Basically what I’m saying is, I think the devs intended for us to see the world up close, but not fight up close. Now we CAN fight up close, but if the weapons are rendered, they may obstruct the view too much unless new animations were added for first person. That would be a lot of work to support a cool-but-unadvisable combat perspective.

Culling vs Clockwork Chaos

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I’ve been doing some testing (my PC has an i5-750 2.66ghz) and found an interesting side-effect of the culling settings and this event.

When running around with a large zerg, setting the model quality to “lowest” has EXTREME positive affects on my framerate. Setting it even just to “low” ruins this and drops the framerate down to nearly slideshow levels.

However, leaving the setting on “lowest” means that I never ever see another player model. It’s not really an MMO if I can’t see people’s unique characters and gear.

Can it be modified to trigger the “lowest” quality effect ONLY during 10+ player combat when set at “low.” This way we could still get the near silk FPS in combat while maintaining our ability to see others while not near a fight.

Right now even cities are displaying no character models for me on “lowest.” Not sure if it’s all the activity from the event, or if that setting litterally means no unique character models ever.

It’s all a bit of a hassle. Ever since luck salvaging was added, we’ve recognized minor sigils and minor runes as the anti-loot and the anti-salvage. Once you’ve acquired 60 of them (read 50+ inventory slots) you’ll make a grand total of 9 silver and some odd change.

Whenever you are having a good day in open world and end up chaining from event to event, you’ll quickly find your inventory completely full. If you don’t have full luck, you’ll likely want to salvage your items. HOWEVER, what’s this? You’re on one of your alts that doesn’t have the Copper Fed Salvage O’ Matic? Gotto use that Mystic Salvage kit then. Next thing you know, most of your salvage items are having their slots instantly replaced with runes and sigils.

So you’re fumbling around with runes, sigils, luck and mats (some which have maxed out in your bank.) Salvage, deposit, drag, delete, salvage, deposit, salvage, get stuck walking slow, deposit, drag, delete, drag, delete, drag, delete.

Next thing you know, the 20+ sparkling mobs on the floor are starting to disappear, you’re having a hell of a hard time tagging the next wave, or your dungeon team is trying to move on and you’re walking off a cliff with your inv window open.

So…. minor runes and sigils are probably responsible for more loss in profits than gains.

To make matters worse, a lot of new players don’t even fuss with them.

My question is: Why did ArenaNet decide that we as players wanted/needed to have these things? And have them packed up in a bag that requires us to decide and accept ONE AT A TIME.

Why not just drop the two items directly out of the gifts so we get two neat stacks of stuff we can sell to a merch for a few silver rather than also loading us up two additional bag types (per tier) that take more inventory space and clicking?

Why do these things exist?

also, nice conspiracy theory. i mean, it’s not like GW1 had a cash shop or anything, right?

Not completely in line with the argument at hand but Id’ like to point out that GW1’s major cash shop elements were actually added much later down the road.

For many of us day one players, the edition of makeovers and costumes were well beyond our prime time in GW1. And that includes the nearly 10,000 hours I /aged in the game.

I’m convinced that the decision to add them was Guild Wars 2 based. After all, they didn’t show up in GW1 until after planning for GW2 had begun. GW1 may have even been sort of a testing ground for cash shop options in GW2.

Somehow they came to the conclusion of having gems purchasable with ingame gold and I’m very happy with that. Though at this point it’s hard to tell if all of the RNG and time limited offers are profit based or not, but they do look that way.

another interesting fact: the cash shop also didn’t show up until after they stopped releasing expansions that brought the money in.

GW2 has no plans for paid expansions currently, as you can see.

money has to come from somewhere. ANet opted for an optional cash shop instead of charging money for an expansion every year.

Right, I agree with that.

No it’s actually a common thing though. With the sPvP blocking.

Not that I really want to see who is blocking me. I think that would cause me more strife than just not knowing.

However, people who like to criticize “skill” in sPvP love to toss a mail or PM then block you so you can’t respond.

I’ve had two cases. One was a thief who kept killing me 2v1 (this was a while ago) and the score was like 450 to 30 so when I saw him next I just jumped off a cliff. This made him really mad for some reason so he just had to block/PM me about how bad I was at the game.

The second case was just yesterday. I was lagging terribly bad so I joined hotjoin instead of queued up. My team starts winning, I volunteer over and one of my ex-teammates is just HOUNDING on our mesmer for timing his skill wrong. I felt like the mesmer could use someone to stick up for him so all I said was “Getting competitive?” in map chat. 2 hours later I get this nice intricate email from the rager and blocked.

Seriously both cases were hotjoin and 400+ vs 70- scores. Somehow I made people on the winning team rage? Sheesh.

Personally I think it would be much better if you weren’t Saving The World, and instead Personal Stories could be shorter episodes about your character, like “My quest to find my sister who was captured by a circus and the adventures I had along the way.” There’s a potential for a huge variety of such Personal Stories, whereas you can only really Save The World a couple of times before it gets really silly.

Everyone who ever writes a story needs to consider this.

In story telling, there is no strength in numbers:

300 people fought on the battlefield.
OR
10,000 people fought on the battlefield.

Both are infinitely less interesting than:

One person walked out into the battlefield alone and attempted to find a way to fight against himself pitting his arms against his legs.

CDI- Guilds- Guild Halls

in CDI

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

My suggestion:

Alliance – General huge plot of land
Guild – Hall with land plots dedicated to members
Player – Houses placed on that guild land

So the issue with guild halls is very similar to the issue with player owned housing. You can’t open it to be completely open world without inviting a massive land-rush. But having tight instances isn’t that cool either.

I’ll focus on Guild Halls but I should note: I’m envisioning an alliance owned piece of land where all members can walk around and visit one-another’s houses and guild halls. The status of the alliance determines the size of the land. The status of the guild hall determines how much of it is dedicated to that particular guild’s housing.

Important:———
A Guild without an alliance can still have a Hall that creates a land instance equal to the size it would have been allowed in an alliance. A player without a guild can still access his house via a new spot or portal in the home instance.
———————————

The Guild Hall would have usability features unlocked through time gating. So stuff like merchant and crafting access will be accessible to a tiny guild just consisting of a father, his two kids and his sister for example.

Increasing the land allowed to a guild hall would be more of an activity thing. A bigger-fancier hall would could take up more of the housing lots available to the alliance. Therefore, a large and active guild (500 members with 130 active most days) would devour most of the available land by itself. However, bunches of small guilds that take up 5-15 lots each aren’t going to be that much of a hindrance on the alliance.

The goal is to create a system where smaller guild halls have an appeal to alliance leaders. Alliances that just want to coordinate the best in GvG/WvW can opt to choose guilds that lean their guild halls harder toward functionality features and minimize land. Members of said guilds can still be subsequently in another guild with a land based guild hall if they want to have their house surrounded by neighbors.

Basically, 3 distinct upgrade types:
1. Guild Hall upgrades that help coordinate/show-off competitively
2. Guild Hall upgrades that improve the aesthetics of the hall itself and provides land for housing around/behind it
3. Unlocks for PvE boosts, merchants, parties and player rewards

Optimizations:
1. Can only plot your house under one guild and Guild Hall under one alliance
2. If necessary, alliance only displays Guild Halls which splits into a Guild Hall instance which may split into several neighborhood instances (Possible joining of two small guild halls into a single instance)

Please don't make us be 'bad guys' again

in Living World

DarkWasp.7291

I think the deeper question is why is Caithe attracted to Faolain? Nothing that came out of Faolain’s mouth that entire episode was redeeming in any way, shape, or form. It was all either lies, harm, wrong, violent, or speculation on a conversation that was none of her business. Caithe has awful taste in romance and treats her “friends” even worse.

It reminded me of how bad the Padme/Anakin romance was in the prequels. What did Padme see in Anakin? None of his actions or words had anything attractive in them. There is a reason people find the prequels deplorable: Jar jar and the relationship between Padme and Anakin lacked anything of worth.

As I was rereading the thread, I noticed you also made the Anakin parallel. Actually you posted it before me :P

It’s really a testament to what happens in storywriting between the lines. There’s only so much you can do with exposition. Love is weak in words and strong in character.

Evil is the same way except that you can say: Evil is weak in actions but strong in character. You can easily write out: “A mindless alien overlord who forces every living being to die a million painful deaths.” It’s a terrible action on mass scale. It’s also very boring.

So we can compare a pretty good example to our two “bad” examples.

Good:
Mr. Freeze from Batman. He does the stuff he does because his company, in a way, kidnapped his wife without any intent of returning her. The important part is that we as an audience first see that part. We learn to hate the company and THEN we see Mr. Freeze doing bad things. While we’re still rooting for Batman, we feel bad for Mr. Freeze.

Bad:
Anakin: “Obi Wan is mean to me!” “No one will ever understand me!”

-Well. Since we all agree with Obi Wan, and we’ll never understand you. You suck.

Faolain: “Wynne won’t tell me her secrets!” “Let’s go beat it out of her!” “Look at these filthy animals!”

-She seems nice though. How about we don’t beat up the nice lady? The centaurs are nice too. What’s your problem with them again?

So we have Mr. Freeze who loved his wife. Then we have Anakin who can’t take a little criticism and Faolain who … hates centaurs?

If free players were allowed to /map, there’s a good chance you STILL wouldn’t be able to ask for help. Questions and answers tend to get buried beneath all of the arguing and botting.

To that end, I ENCOURAGE veterans to reach out on map chat and let people know they are available for questions through PM. I feel this would help create the best system for new players to get help.

30 mins of killing - profession specific loot

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I just don’t get the whole thing. If it were almost unnoticeable, then it poses absolutely no benefit to new players, so why have it in the first place anyway? It seems like the only feature it adds is to deliberately incorporate built in classism. A sort of built-in punishment for rolling popular professions.

The main issue, which we’ve been over on the forums, is that new players are not upgrading from green gear. Even ANet said they wanted virtually all level 80s to get into exotics fairly quickly.

So they added leveling gear, which I thought was a good idea. Problem is, I had to do research to find out it even existed. So I made two daggers for my level 60~ thief. That put me out about 10g or more! And there’s armor like that too.

What new player is going to have 10g to spend on temporary weapons? What new player could afford the whole set including armor? What about the countless new players who try to get the mats by themselves rather than buying. Where are they gonna get the ectos from? I understand these are really for alts but they were in the NPE section.

I think these areas could be improved like so:

1. Cut profession specific loot out of all things level 80 and not account/soulbound
2. 100% profession specific from things like story completion, and map completion that drop account/soulbound
3. Increase the chance of rare profession specific loot below level 80. NOTE: Player level 80, not loot level 80.0
4. Apply profession specific loot to fractal weapons but also have it attempt to dodge skins already unlocked

For leveling weapons:
1. Reduce the power
2. Reduce the cost
3. GREATLY increase chance to have them dropped rather than crafted
4. Make them soulbound rather than accountbound to compensate

By doing this, players should be getting more exotic gear before 80 and by having tasted and seen their power, should be more drawn to make that upgrade when they max out.

BONUS: Have the account wallet display the number of ectos a player has stored. This way they will stand out more to new players as a VERY IMPORTANT resource.

BONUS 2: Put a “get better gear” link of some sort in the hero equipment panel, that disappears when the player has full exotics equipped, that opens up the trading post and points to exotic level 80 gear by profession. Better if done with a subtle icon or highlight of some sort. Don’t need to have it be too annoying or patronizing.

In my opinion: at same time a lot of PUGs behave in an antisocial manner; so a small amount of soloable and challenging content might be nice for when you want to take a break from them.

Right, which is why my ideas involve the open world instead of solo instances. It’s not that I want to get other players off my chat and screen entirely. I just I want to sort of “plug and play” and hop right into the action without all of the burden of grouping on my shoulders.

i dont see any connection between gw1 10 year anniversary and opening cantha or tengu zones in gw2…

gw1 10 year anniversary should be celebrated in gw1 mainly… gw2 can have some 10 year anniversary gem shop hats…

Shhhuuussshhh!

We’ll take whatever new stuff we can get for whatever reason.

Loot and the lack thereof

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

This is actually one of the places where GW2 is vastly different from most other things on the market.

In most MMOs, instances/dungeons come about every so often in the main story chain and reward players with the craziest most OP and colorful things. However, 6 levels later it becomes a piece of junk OR a sadly underpowered item that has a feature that’s too good to give up for many levels to come.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world doesn’t drop many weapons or armor and you mainly accumulate crafting materials through drops or gathering.

GW2’s loot is a bit more like EVE missions, except in GW2 it’s across ALL content. You get dropped tons of gear that you aren’t going to use. The purpose of this is to salvage them, not to equip them. This is why we aren’t happy about the NPE profession loot bias thing.

Now as far as the OP’s concern with a sort of drop famine. Happens to everyone at different times of the year. Basically the way it works is exotics have less than a 1% chance to drop, and rares are pretty low too. Basically it makes us crazy, because it’s like waiting for a fish to bite in an ocean with no more than a couple dozen fish.

I have a few superstitions that I try not to hold on to but: For me it always seems like updates that affect the loot table immediately give me good luck for 3-4 days. Meanwhile, others report the opposite. Logically I know it’s just RNG, but deep down I still get more desperate to get on and farm/run right after a feature pack or holiday starts.

I dumped around 200g into votes last minute with the 2x support banner. Not much, but I also know of at least 10 others who did the same.

So did you really mean to say 200g?

Struggling in higher level fractals w/ sword

in Ranger

DarkWasp.7291

I haven’t quite reached 50 because I’ve done a LOT of fractals below my current reward level, but I will say I use Sword → Longbow everywhere. That includes level 40.

1. Mistakes will happen and the way the 1H Sword works for Ranger in PvE is something I disagree with entirely. Regardless, I still use it.

2. I can almost safely say I’ve NEVER really used the leaps to intentionally chase foes in Fractals. There’s nothing the leaps can do that just running and swinging normal melee weapons can’t accomplish in this form of PvE. Also any enemy that tries to move away just gets pulled back with the axe offhand.

3. The need to unbind auto-attack leads to a DPS loss if you need to type something in the middle of a melee fight.

NOW, all that said… Here’s how you can still do it and live.

Always think premptively. If you have auto-attack off, you’ll need thinkabout 1 second ahead. If you have auto-attack on, forget trying to dodge and just start typing “Working as intended” in party chat.

So you’ve thought 1 second ahead, what should you do? Use skill 2 to bail out and switch to Longbow. This means you expect something to happen, let one of the 4 guardians on your team die instead.

Now how does this look in the Archdiviner fight?

  • Well you usually start with the longbow out, switch and throw your axe…
  • Wait until you see him swing his hammer then jump in there REALLY FAST.
  • Swing some good hits on him maybe a full AA rotation or two, with quickness if possible, then jam that skill 2 button ONCE…
  • Throw another axe…
  • Then as you see him take another swing, use skill 2 again to jump right back in there and start slashing away for a short time then MASH skill 3…
  • If he’s not channeling wells or stunned by now, bail out with a dodgeroll or another skill 2…
  • Camp Longbow with Rapid Fire Barrage Rapid Fire for 10 seconds…
  • If the boss isn’t stunned by now, then your group sucks and you can totally blame them when you inevetably die after you rambo in again “just cuz.”

Long story short – Wait for your enemy to do his deadly thing THEN move in. Just be ready to move back out.

Also if you ever accidently switch to Sword at any time just hit skill 5 on your offhand axe and stand there swinging while you pretend like you know something your team doesn’t.

It would be nice if they got another update before the new ones come out.

On F2P, B2P and P2P: GW1 proved they could do minimal cash shop and stay afloat on game sales.

On rewards: Yes I agree completely with the idea that something that can be bought is not really a reward. We may have a ton of skins in the game already, but they aren’t really giving us a reward reason to hype/play new content.

Instead of your friends telling you:

“Hey, come check out this new Dry Top place where you can work toward ninja armor!”

It’s:

“Hey come check out this new Dry Top place! Also you can buy this ninja costume with money or go back to wherever and farm champs to get it!”

It’s just not the same. Even if you save up gems before every LS update, is that really playing the new content for the new rewards?

OP, you are one boss-monster of a poster. Epic.

I agree with a lot of the stuff you wrote, and on the stuff I don’t, it still gets the mind ticking.

I do think your parting suggestion is valid, and here’s why:

Daily Skill Interrupter – Ever try to do this on any old class just out in the open world?

You soon notice that enemies don’t just have poor conveyance, they have anti-conveyance. They don’t attack intruders ruthlessly, they throw out a swing randomly every once and a while. In the only way they are challenging is trying to predict when they are going to use their next skill so you can interrupt it.

I can see that in the starter zones, but Gendarran? I think by then the enemies should behave differently.
