RP in a MMO

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

Basically RP goes like this.

1. You’ve created your own story that you want everyone to care about.
2. Everyone else has done the same, and they want you to care about their stories.
3. You try to earn brownie points by pretending you care about their stories, or by throwing in game lore.
4. Nobody really listens to your story because they are too busy waiting for the next chance to jump in with their own.
5. You find you’re doing the same thing.

Otherwise there’s nothing icky about it. The hatred and ignorance toward it is completely uncalled for.

A Charr, an Asura and a Human banded together one day to clear the evil from a realm.

  • The Charr used his greatsword to cleave through waves of undead.
  • The Asura used his ingenuity to outsmart a giant.
  • The Human called down the power of Balthazar to finish off the final and deadliest foe.

As a reward, their party was presented with ONE legendary weapon. Who was deemed worthy of the weapon?

Feature pack 9/9: feedback

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

Here’s my short version overview:

Good stuff:

  • Trading post changes – It may have some kinks to work out, but it is FINALLY usable and searchable. Previously I was discouraged from using it due to long load times
  • Collections – Rewards are a bit off but it’s something to do. I can’t complain about having more reasons to play the game
  • BL Chest changes – Making the good stuff more common is good for both ingame payers and real money payers
  • Level up rewards – Running level 50s with level 12 gear was probably the REAL reason people were having trouble, gear and stat combos tend to take longer to learn (even for hardcore players) than skills.
  • Ranger GS and Axe changes – Because I main ranger
  • Commander tag changes – Eventually. Just give the players a little time to cool down and stop trying on their new tags
  • Changes to the WvW season achievements and rewards
  • Optimizations – I think it feels a lil better, can’t be sure though
  • Collections again – Just just… I LOVE stuff like this. I hope we have a long future of new cool collections being added to the game.

Bad stuff:

  • Nerfing the alt experience for the good of a “majority” whom we will all probably never see past level 30 anyway – Also where can we go to get our voices heard just as theirs were?
  • Arah P2 apparently broke
  • Cannot see feet in hero window
  • Can no longer auto-login in launcher
  • Female human animations got damaged even more
  • Key farm destroyed – I didn’t even like doing it that much, but it was basically the only thing that edged BL Chests on the not-immoral
  • People talking about business rather than gameplay on the forums – I almost don’t blame the devs if they don’t want to read the crap we post
  • Frost Spirit stealth nerf – It’s not just a nerf, its pretty much a removal

We are in a state of fallout though. Communication is going to be THE most important thing now. Despite the collections, we’re still afraid that those of us who love the game don’t have a future mapped out for us. We feel like we’ve all banded together for two years and plotted out what we want and what this game needs, yet somehow this mysterious “majority” got their voice heard beyond ours.

And this was pre-reinforced when after two long years of saying “out-of-combat first person zoom, out-of-combat first person zoom, out-of-combat first person zoom,” we STILL had a dev speak in an interview saying people might get confused in combat from that perspective.

Yes it was confusing. Yes it was a little buggy.

How to fix?:

Leave its current functionality in.
Put the graph back in.
Put a custom amount section in too.

Thus you’d have the new and the old.

Forced into even more WvW that I despise

in The Edge of the Mists

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

The problem with mixing long PvE achievements into WvW is they rarely add fun to the process.

There are a lot of people who have fun exploring the PvE map find themselves frustrated spending eight hours a day staring at that last POI inside a WvW keep and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Speaking as a total “carebear” myself. I dread the memory of the 3 days I spent farming badges in WvW for a legendary more than I dread the memory of the 11 twelve-hour days I spent farming cupcakes off vaettirs in GW1. (I was in college at the time.)

The funny thing is, I actually enjoy WvW from time to time. When I’m out there without a goal I have fun. When I was farming badges, however, I despised every bag of loot that did not add to my progress. I hated every supply run my server’s zerg did away from the fighting.

I just like to make progress on my own terms, so sue me.

CDI- Character Progression-Horizontal

in CDI

DarkWasp.7291

As I was coming up with ideas to answer the question of: Which ONE content/suggestion type would be best for the game in improving horizontal character progression? I started thinking about how player housing could interweave into other aspects of the game.

Then I thought: What better exercise for planning this than to write my own set of imaginary game update notes?

DISCLAIMER: Despite my tone or choice of words in this post, I am not a developer. If you didn’t gather that already.

Introducing…

NEIGHBORHOODS AND ACCOUNT HOUSING

After a long day of keeping Tyrian homes safe, your characters may now rest in a house of their own. New neighborhoods have begun popping up north of Divinity’s Reach and it’s up to YOU to populate them.

  • New feature and item: House Deeds
After purchasing a lot in a neighborhood you receive an unlimited use item which will instantly teleport you to your home. Does not work in combat or instances. At your house you may activate a portal to teleport back to exactly where you left off. Any player with a deed may select “Invite To House” on other players, and in the future, certain NPCs.
  • New zone: Tyrian Neighborhood
Each neighborhood includes 55 lots, 50 housing lots and five reserved for future guild halls. In the middle players will find a town hall, a Mystic Forge conduit, festival grounds and merchant, trading post and bank services.
In addition to providing a place to live, the neighborhoods will include many other activities as well:
  • Neighborhood Treasure Hunt – Skritt have hidden their shinies in the area! Can you find them?
Whether the event happens in your neighborhood or another, you can still participate. If you don’t lock your doors the treasure may be found inside YOUR house. Be sure to welcome the crowd of greedy treasure hunters with a smile.
  • Three new Jumping Puzzles – Looking for a better vantage point to spy on your neighbors? Each zone comes complete with three new puzzles looming over everybody’s homes. The third and final puzzle ends above the center of the neighborhood. Completing all three in sequence will grant you a bonus chest. NOTE: Skill bars are disabled within the puzzle.
  • Skritt costume brawl – Skritt have gotten into the festival costumes again! Battle skritt, children, players and other NPCs near the festival grounds with your costumes and toys. Counts toward Costume Brawl daily and community achievements.
  • Visitation and Eminence – Visit others and receive guests to accumulate Visitation Points.
    - You gain 25 Visitation Points for each unique house you visit and 1-10 for each return visit depending on number of days since your last arrival.
    - Unique guests give you 100-1000 Visitation Points depending on their level of Eminence.
    - Returning guests apply 10-100 Visitation Points to your account along with their unique amount if they have leveled in Eminence since the last visit.
    - Eminence levels are gained primarily through visitation points, however certain titles and achievements can contribute as well:
Golden – Hall of Monuments achievements – Zhaitan vanquished – 100% world completion – The Emperor – (Future) Story or neighborhood tasks – (Future) Guild influence contribution
    - Max out your Eminence level to gain the new gold colored title “His Eminence” or “Her Eminence.”

More neighborhood applications for Eminence coming soon!

  • Furniture and blueprints – Find rare blueprints in your adventures and use them to craft furniture for your house. See a table you absolutely MUST have in your neighbor’s house? Perhaps he’ll be nice enough to let you copy his blueprints. Display your own blueprints to attract visitors. They’ll need to bring their own paper if they want to copy them of course.
    - Collectables aside, hundreds of furniture options can be purchased for gold at the town hall and for gems from the Black Lion Trading Company. Most furniture can be modified by paint.
  • Housing upgrades and upkeep – Improve and expand your house to increase both its appeal and its benefit to your account. Well kept houses provide bonus exp and buffs to your characters in PvE. Upgraded houses cost more in upkeep but allow for greater bonuses and more Visitation Points gain from guests. Unkept houses do not provide bonuses or gain any Visitation Points at all.
    Bonuses include:
    - Rested EXP, Idle characters automatically return to the house to get rest
    - Application of the Well-Connected, Loved, Married, Divorced and Scorned buffs (check the Characters and Interface section for more details)
    - Permanent run speed increase while in a neighborhood zone
    - Waypoint cost reduction per character per zone 100% complete
    - Permanent zero waypoint cost to all major cities
    - Access to indoor services such as crafting, armor repair, training dummies and trait retraining

GW2: A Learning Tool (Wall Street Journal)

DarkWasp.7291

Now that you’ve all managed to each complain about a different aspect of the game…

In a classroom you probably aren’t going to be farming for your legendary or becoming the world’s best PvP league or anything. Instead you could do stuff players don’t usually think about. Once you take the reward factor out (because playing a game for class is rewarding enough) there can be a bit of enjoyment out of exploring the map, co-oping events .etc

I mean if my teacher wanted me to do CoE I wouldn’t really be thinking “Oh I’ve gotto get those tokens!”

According to the article they are learning about mission statements and writing short stories for their characters. Each is external to the game itself, the game is just a tool.

Seriously, I think it’s a great thing.

Please Remove Map Completion from PvP Areas

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

What about the WvW players that have to explore the PvE map which is ~10x bigger?

I don’t understand this actually.

Why would a WvWer who does not want to PvE care about completing the map?

  • If they are going for a legendary, then they got bigger PvE woes than exploration.
  • If they are going for completionism, then are they asking to have PvE removed all together?
  • If they are feeling OCD just because they ran across a few map points in WvW, isn’t that even MORE reason to remove the temptation [on the WvW side]?
  • If they want the exploration star, do they realize it signifies exploring Tyria, AKA the PvE side of the game?

I’ll say this again, as I have historically in these kind of threads:

I’m pretty diverse, but PvE is my absolute main playstyle. I’ve had my share of fun in WvW. NONE of which occurred during map completion or the original badge grind for my legendary.

In other words: I like WvW better when I don’t have a PvE goal to stress about. I like PvE better when I don’t have to worry about WvW.

Aaaaand more on topic:

Do I have 500$ to go to the movies and eat out a bunch of times this quarter? I think I do. Do I have 30$ to buy a game/expansion that I’ll play for 100+ hours? No. No I do not.

Here’s how the online PC community works:

Can it be pirated? Not yet? Alright, then as far as I’m concerned it ain’t out yet.

Here’s how the modern 10 year old kid manages money:

Hey dad I HAVE to have this new Guild Wars 2 thing! [Easily obtains credit card / buys 20,000 gems / expansion not for sale yet / will bother dad again when it is / randomly gets new iPhone and a bunch of Minecraft swag for no reason]

And of course the avid forum goer:

30$? I don’t know ANet, might not be worth it. I still think you should give me my money back for the original GW2 because you did not fulfill X “promise” at Y time. I still want to play the game though. Hmm, 30$ is too rich for my blood. [Thinking inside: “Oh snap! I brought up money! They will totally listen to me now!”]

The WoW gamer:

Why don’t we have a sub fee yet?!

The adoring fan:

I have 20,000$ saved up just in case.

The PC master race guy:

I made a New Years resolution to only buy games that support DX12

The MLG-wannabe-Counter-Strike fellow:

It’s adding hang gliding which makes it an ArcheAge clone which makes it a WoW clone which makes it a COD clone IDONTWANTITGETITOUTOFMYFACE!

The grandma:

I bought Heart of Thorns and I bought Nightfall. My grandson says only Nightfall works. Why would they sell something that doesn’t work?

WvW no longer required for world completion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I think this whole mindset that all people should be helping with WvW needs to go.

People who don’t want to WvW are not necessarily bad people.
People who only PvE are not necessarily ruining your fun.
So don’t get yourself all worked up over the morality, courage and justice of these players.

If WvW is understaffed, is PvE really to blame? If it is, wouldn’t that imply PvE is better than WvW (to more people)? If WvW is not understaffed, then why care what the PvE players are doing?

Want to recruit more people into the WvW cause? Do it positively. Server bonuses for WvW success is one way of positive advertising, though it’s very hidden.

Exploration was an example of negative advertising. Many dreaded that last section of their world completion. Guilting “carebears” is another example of negative advertising.

Am I the only one happy with Rangers?

in Ranger

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I’ve always played the ranger and never been happy with it. Why do I stick with it?

1. I gravitate really hard toward my main character in MMOs.
2. I like feel of the class despite what I’m going to mention below.

So why am I not happy with it?

1. Pets are factored into our stats. So for another class to reach full potential they just need to put 100% good skill and build in. For a ranger to reach full potential we have to put x% skill and build in and y% relying on the pet AI/build. That y% is a problem.

2. Our skills are unforgiving and conditional, often coupled with relatively long cooldown times.

3. My favorite weapon, the 1h sword suffers from rooting, autopilot and many deaths that could have been avoided otherwise. The only solution to this problem? Unbinding autoattack and wearing your finger out on 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 while having to plan AHEAD in order to dodge or bail out in any way.

^ While you can take some pride in “mastering” this. Wouldn’t our skill as players be better spent manually controlling the character instead of worrying that we may press “1” one to many times and jump off a tall cliff?

4. The ranger bows have had a tendency to be inferior ranged weapons compared to those of the warrior and thief.

5. While we excel in condition builds, conditions fall way short of straight DPS in high level PvE content.

6. The main hand axe is an awesome concept. However, it deals a worthless amount of damage so I’ve never been able to use it outside of bunkering sPvP.

7. When playing PvE hardcore with my guild running dungeons/fractals multiple times in a row, it became clear that in order to improve my performance in these instances any more I would need to start playing a warrior instead.

Now, do I like this update? Yes I do. Path of Scars is now a CC, and that is a pretty spamable skill that also does a lot of damage. Also a speed, responsiveness buff for the long bow, woot woot.

Except I don’t feel like we were presented with all that many new build options, and playing the same build for months, even if it gets buffed, can get boring.

WvW no longer required for world completion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

This is a very good change:

  • Exploration was 90%+ PvE, but the WvW side of it could take longer than all of the rest combined.
  • Exploration in PvE was a different type of content than exploration in WvW.
  • There are people like me who enjoy WvW/PvP MUCH LESS when stressing over exclusive PvE goals while doing them. All of the fun times I had in WvW happened in the absence of goals.
  • The Gift of Battle is still required and includes content that rewards players for playing WvW in general and does not require specific goals that your server may not accomplish.
  • There are people like me who never feel drawn to WvW (though I do like sPvP). The previous exploration requirement did not change that attitude.
  • Having to set foot in every fort wasn’t exactly the best representation of WvW.
  • Map exploration is NOT solely a legendary goal. A lot of people just want to say they explored the PvE map. Might as well give them a star for that.
  • Anyone saying the above are whiners, carebears or scrubs are a big part of the reason why they didn’t want to WvW/PvP in the first place.

STEP 1
Join my P1 COE group.

STEP 2
Open up youtube in another window.

STEP 3
Pretend like you don’t speak English.

STEP 4
Swing your sword every once and a while.

STEP 5
Ignore us when we explain how to stack the console part.

STEP 6
Throw in a random “lol.”

STEP 7
Don’t notice that someone is attempting to kick you, because no one is going to second the vote anyway.

STEP 8
Don’t notice you need to rally at the nearest WP and wait for us to rez you.

STEP 9
Notice that we actually finally passed the console part.

STEP 10
Realize you’re in Mount Maelstrom again with 1.5ish gold waiting to be picked up because “you helped complete the dungeon.”

Effortless

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]

I mean really. I’d gladly pay $50 if they raised the new player price to $70

Of course that wouldn’t be smart, so they could always throw a free character slot at existing players or something.

Maybe add $25 worth of gems to the +$25 version and $60 worth of gems to the +$50 dollar version too.

The detail in there makes you wonder why you aren’t actually allowed inside no ?

The general detail around all of the maps make you wonder why they opted not to have first person zoom in any way shape or form.

This thread is a sterling example of how people use gear to attempt to judge the skill of a player.

I admit. I deliberately play extra notes off-beat because I get real joy out of watching/hearing the people next to me get completely tripped out of their timing.

Why do PvE - players complain...

in The Edge of the Mists

DarkWasp.7291

As a PvE primary with sPvP and WvW experience I can say I like sPvP better.

In sPvP you’re thrown right back into the action, even if your team sucks (which is frustrating) you can still keep trying.

WvW is a different game, and it IS all about time investment. The 15 minutes you spent getting to the other side of the map is at risk for example. If you want to unlock that last POI for map exploration you have to wait for the zerg/commander to FINALLY decide to go for that last tower.

Most times they don’t.

Then when you die because you got tired of playing keep-up with the zerg, you look at your map and found they went for it… but you can’t get to it again in time.

THAT is the real answer to the “time” element in the OP. Hopping into WvW does not immediately put you in a place where you can get things done. If you’re zerging instead of roaming, the killcredit/framerate/keep-up is worse than the Frostgorge champ farm. If you’re roaming, you may start getting kills in the first minute or it may take you twenty or more, especially for new players who haven’t spent time enough researching builds and methods.

How do you interpret the term "exp" from LFG?

I’ve always wanted to put my ads as:

“Scale 8, swamp rolled, experience preferred but adaptability accepted, reading and responding to party chat is required, attempting to take leadership of the group not allowed, toxic perfectionism not welcome, exotic+ gear only (stats must compliment your build), can learn how to kill mobs if running not possible, can jump, can live with a few mistakes, can learn from own mistakes, does not drop 50 IQ points as soon as something breaks the standard run/stack methods, all classes welcome”

but that’s just a wee bit out of the message limit now is it not?

Will there be changes to Scarlet's attack?

I don’t think the playerbase is headed in the intended direction with this one. I don’t blame them though. As a result of the win rewards being below standards for the participants, not much effort is put toward driving that minion bar down to head to the next step. On top of that, 45 minutes is a long time.

I would think that for something that lasts 45 minutes, requires massive cooperative action and spawns only so often we should be seeing people linking cool things like precursors and maybe an ascended item or two every once and a while. On top of that there could be something like 100 Empyreal Fragments for completing the event.

I think upping the reward or lowering the requirements are the only possible fixes. If the pirates were nerfed I think that would only increase the “why bother?” factor and lower the participation.

So that’s the reason behind the weird running!

Yep, GW2 animators have no idea how to bone a mesh -_-

Aside from the recent bug with female running, the animations in this game have been pretty superb.
