I have absolutely nothing againt TTS. But in fact, it was nothing more than a band-aid for a borked raid encounter.
I am happy they fixed the borked encounter, if it works without a band-aid now, why would I be sad?
They didn’t fix the encounter, instead I guess they’ll have the opposite effect if every guild will stop doing Tequal and the wurm because of the stress it will cause to organize everything. We can say godbye to the wurm, maybe only Tequatl will still be killed on some lucky servers since it requires less people.
The wurms have never been killed on my server, and Tequatls sits in his cage for 15 minutes since he was patched.
At least people will get a chance to just spawn in the right instance full with people to actually do the event. Success or failure is secondary. There will be an event, not just a deserted boss fight.
People who want to do the world event will come together without any artificial step, which is the first step into the right direction.

What most ppl don’t see, is that we are getting 2 new tiers of gear in the future:
“Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”
So legendary gear will be better than the new ascended gear which is just the first step into the grind for the best gear. Otherwise this sentence wouldn’t make any sense.

False Advertising
“Any advertising or promotion that misrepresents the nature, characteristics, qualities or geographic origin of goods, services or commercial activities” (Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C.A. § 1125(a)).
Proof Requirement
To establish that an advertisement is false, a plaintiff must prove five things: (1) a false statement of fact has been made about the advertiser’s own or another person’s goods, services, or commercial activity; (2) the statement either deceives or has the potential to deceive a substantial portion of its targeted audience; (3) the deception is also likely to affect the purchasing decisions of its audience; (4) the advertising involves goods or services in interstate commerce; and (5) the deception has either resulted in or is likely to result in injury to the plaintiff. The most heavily weighed factor is the advertisement’s potential to injure a customer. The injury is usually attributed to money the consumer lost through a purchase that would not have been made had the advertisement not been misleading. False statements can be defined in two ways: those that are false on their face and those that are implicitly false.
1) False statement: The original GW2 game is needed to play the expansion GW2:HoT
2) Everyone interested in GW2:HoT was mislead to require GW2
3) People would have not bought GW2 if they knew that the expansion was including the full game
4) Yap
5) People payed money for something they didn’t have to.
Dunno, looks good to me.

The problem is that GW2 has taken away options how to play.
Less options less variety. Less variety less challenges. Less challenges less entertained players.

“Most games, you go out and you have really fun tasks ocassionally, that you get to do. And the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff.”
They thought the grind is boring, so they replaced it with waiting.
Waiting is not boring, it is like Christmas, the best is yet to come. Stay on this map for one hour if you do not want to fail on an overflow. Well you can do some boring grind on the map if you do not like waiting – wait wut?

Look I don’t care about the tonics anyway.
The problem I have with it, is that it was fun last year, it was content. It was new and exciting.
This year, it is just old news. ANet could just hand it out for free, the hardcore players would not care. Everyone would be happy. The stuff from last christmas is just that, stuff from last year.
But no, ANet has to put it on a RNG in the mystic toilet. Seriously. What is the point. Why does ANet have the tendency to make a chore out of everything no matter how small. Where is the christmas spirit in this?
It is not hard to get the stuff, it is not challenging, unless you count repeating a mindless task as challenge. It is just lame.
Anyone who thinks that flushing stuff down the mystic toilet is great fun should try a virtual slot machine, because you know, it is pretty much the same.

Heart of Thorns is not an expansion, it is a stand alone by its very nature as will be all upcoming “expansions” to Guild Wars 2.
Whatever version you buy, you will never be required the base game, not for now or in the future.
Incorrect. Heart of Thorns does not function without the base game and is not balanced to suit a player without the base game. It doesn’t require you to buy the base game because it is being given for free with it. It is no different than Eye of the North.
With this cleared up, expectations should be compared to the price we pay. We are asked to pay the price of a full game for HoT (and probably every boxed addition to GW2), so the game can be compared to what we got in GW2.
Even though I think that we actually got too much with the initial release of GW2, getting significantly less than that will be very unsatisfying.
Only time will tell.
I highly doubt we’ll get the same volume of maps, even if this was to be considered a full game, “Pact Tyria” has many maps that sorely lack character. Dry top and Silverwastes are small maps, but their designs are rich and I predict we’ll get 4 or 5 full size maps with the same density of love.
You don’t get the base game for free, it is calculated into the price of the package. I can’t buy the expansion, because there is no expansion. I can upgrade my account with what new content HoT has to offer, but in the end, I will just give up on a lot of content I bought with the package.
There is nothing for free when buying HoT, which is a full game and not an expansion.
Dry Top is sort of OK, even though the event density is less than satisfying and variety is meager.
Silverwastes is just the same base copied over the map several times with some flavour events at the end. It is hardly “dense” or innovative. It is entertaining, for some time. Enough action to overlook that there is harldy anything really happening there.Looks like we are getting more of the “more action less meaning” part in the expansion. They should have gone with the old Orr design where you felt like fighting through a battlefield IMO, not this mindless event grinding we see everywhere nowadays.
Actually the base game is free the expansion its self is £35 or $50 as Anet have stated many times including the base game for FREE allows new players to join GW2 and not have to pay more money to get the expansion.
So where can I get the base game for free?
Or where can I get the expansion without the base game?
It is just semantics by ANet.

Yes, yes, there’s a fiery dragon on a box, and we fight a dragon. We fight several dragons. People who bought the game and fight the dragon will assume it’s about dragons. And then they come out with an expansion and make, get this, a new box. And voila! A new experience after the box with the dragon.
Silly argument is silly.
The whole argument in this thread is silly.
We are talking about stuff, stuff that noone but ANet knows what it is. Therefore it is all speculation, which is silly. You started a silly discussion so to say.
Stuff means nothing as long as it is not getting real. Otherwise I would just start getting rich by doing stuff. I will sell stuff and get good money. I will buy more stuff with the money I made with stuff.
This is absurd. When the stuff gets real, we will have a chance to talk about it, but for now, this stuff is nothing but hot air.

Hahahahahahaha, nope!
For whatever reason, the DEV’s just don’t want rangers to use the sword.
Look at the choices you have:
1) Turn off auto-attack and spam 1, 1 and 1 again (yeah, exactly)
or
2) Get locked in place like in an old fashion game like WoW.
Look, I play on a notebook and I really don’t want to kill my “1” key. Especially not for PvE.
And what is all the action combat good for, if you feel like 2004 in WoW when you play with a sword as a ranger?
But no, this is working as intended, as the ranger pets, and the spirits, and the shortbow, and half of the utility skills that are utterly worthless.
Why do I play my ranger again?

It is objectively the best weapon if you do not want to play melee.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
(edited by Kaiyanwan.8521)
Some people just like to play a caster class as a ranged character. While I personally don’t mind (I like to optimize my build depending on what I am doing), I know people that only play ranged.
In the end, only few players ever come to the forums and fewer care about any meta or “best dps” builds.
They play because it is fun, and if they have fun playing ranged, they a) either continue playing ranged or if ranged is no longer viable b) stop playing.
As far as I know this game wasn’t sold as MMMORPG (the extra M is for melee). Min-maxers gonna min-max, haters gonna hate, most people don’t give a kitten on what other people think as long as they enjoy what they do.
There is really not any more to that topic. People will do what they enjoy.

In the past, I thought it was sort of a chore to grind out legendary weapons in LotRO. But hey, the grind for ascended weapons in GW2 just showed me new dimensions.

I will be honest, no trolling intended:
If a main damage skill of your weapon combo is (unintentially) nerfed by 60% and you cannot see a difference, you may have never been playing seriously.
Maybe it’s not so important for you in arena style PvP, but it clearly effects PvE and Wv3.
Just try to see the game as a whole, not only the part that you play, if you want to make a general statement.

You want everyone to have equal levels for each zone – is that not exactly what level scaling achieves? You say living story and events start at level 80 – umm no they start at level 1. And the first dungeon is available from 30. I disagree that this game starts at 80. That being said, leveling is not scaling so its easy to hit 80 within a reasonable amount of time
The leveling is fake as levels do not mean a thing because of downscaling or upscaling, you got that right.
It only excludes you from later zones. So the point is, why having levels at all. That is what this thread is about.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
I don’t mind these changes, because it’s a form of content to keep veterans around, and giving them something to do. Look what happened in the past.. everyone left because GW2 was too casual. There needs to be a balance, and HoT is providing that.
This is pretty much speculation. I wouldn’t be surprised, if ANet ignores raids after their first installment like they did with dungeons, fractals, guild missions, world bosses etc.
And while they say you can just walk into raids without attunement, you still need the necessary masteries to proceed.
So there is actually an attunement, because what is entering a raid good for, if you can’t go anywhere but down.
Get ready to grind some masteries before you enter the raids. Doesn’t sound like content gating at all, does it.

What happens when someone finally posts a guide to the precursor quest? That means it won’t be that hard anymore.
Crafting the bloody thing is not hard even without a guide.
Crafting is lame. It is not heroic. A drop feels awesome. A quest feels like an accomplishment.
Crafting stuff feels tedious. It feels as much as a grind as it is to get the stuff. A quest chain would at least make one thing in this game not grindy. God forbid.

People complain about not enough dungeons. they added a path to atherblade path
They also removed a path. 33 + 1 – 1 is still 33.
They removed an underused path that most people never played. Shrugs.
The new dungeon is longer and more challenging. Just the kind of thing the hard core dungeon crowd was asking for. It’s a bigger and longer dungeon than the one they removed. It’s probably closer to two dungeons anyway, so if they removed 1 and put in one that’s twice as hard, long and big…well you still have more dungeon in the game.
How do we know most people didn’t use it. Well aside from the fact that Anet said so, when we ran TA in my guild, it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to do the F/U path, so we just didn’t do it.
They removed an underused path and replaced it with a path that noone runs.
ANet has learnt their lesson, that’s why we do not see any new dungeons around. They simply fail at creating challenging and at the same time rewarding and fun dungeons.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
The one thing I don’t get:
Monthes later, the same old dungeons. The same old content. The same old strategies. The same old discussion.
There has been NOTHING new. By now, what is the point of this discussion?
Any PvE hardcore player I know has left this game out of boredom decades ago. Well all people I know have left the game but well.
I would say, run the dungeons with scepter/torch for some laughs. But dear lord, min-maxing the same kitten for forever is beyond my capability of managing boredom.
Here is the point:
If you are a hardcore PvE player and still playing GW2, you are not hardcore. Hardcore PvE players thirst for new challenges frequently, GW2 just does not offer this.
Therefore, if you are playing GW2, you are not a hardcore player, so play the way you want and let others play the way they want.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
IMO, stacking is the reason why the DEVs don’t ever give us new dungeon content.
It trivializes all dungeon content. It also makes fights incredibly boring. Stack in that corner, burn down the boss.
The DEVs seem to not be able to work around it, so they just don’t introduce more dungeons. Seriously, one path replacing an older one in what, 19 monthes now?
And while I am a tank at heart and used to hug walls for over 15 years, it is still different in GW2. It is just terribad game design.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
Look, this is not rocket science.
The druid trait line is a one-trick-pony. Strong healing is all it has to offer. If you don’t want to go for healing, there is literally no reason to spec into it unless you want to be less efficient in what else you want to do.
1. Rangers don’t offer anything special
-> they are not popular in groups
2. Druids offer strong healing,
-> if strong healing is needed they will be popular in groups
-> else they are not popular in groups as they do not offer anything more useful than the basic ranger
3. Conclusion: If strong healing is not needed, neither classic rangers nor druids will be a popular choice.
I want to see how ANet is going to ship around that simple conclusion with their raids. Knowing ANet for quite some time now, I don’t expect this to happen.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
The encounter won’t get harder, the difficulty stays about the same, no matter how many people are there. That is proper scaling. It won’t be downscaled or upscaled in difficulty. The difficulty stays the same, the boss just adapts to the amount of players.
That is proper scaling. It doesn’t matter if you start out with 20 people and in the end there are 100 running around, the odds to beat the encounter are the same at any point.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
The arrogance and ignorance in this thread is ridiculous.
You might think that all those games suck and will fail, but the truth is:
- all of this games will drain players
- if you think all of them will come back after a month or so, you are delusional
- GW2 right now has very little to offer and no info for what is coming if there is anything
- the population of GW2 already took a fair hit over the last few monthes, we see empty servers more and more
We also have Titanfall, Destiny, EQNext and other titels coming that will entertain people for a long time. And people will just hop from release to release instead of playing something as old and stale as GW2.
Something needs to be done, just ignoring what’s going on outside of GW2 will just cause a unpleasant awakening at some point.

Pretty much given up on GW2 in matters of content. Maybe they are working on GW3.
Would only buy GW3 if we get a new Manifesto though, something like:
“We took all the crap out of GW2 because noone likes the grinds or pressing 1, 1 and 1 again, and refocused on GW as inspiration. If you loved GW you should play GW3, and if you disliked GW2, you really, really should play GW3!”

MMO Rule #1: Never play on a patch day!
If you do, don’t complain.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
I think it’s important to step back and gain a little perspective here.
ArenaNet is attempting something completely new to MMO’s by implementing multifaceted content to be released every two weeks by individual teams who are given an average of one month from start to finish to create. This is incredibly ambitious even for a large AAA game company.
I’ve been studying game design with the hopes of someday making it into the industry and even with my limited knowledge of how these projects come together it never ceases to amaze me that they can produce this amount of work in such a short amount of time, bugs or not.
Keep in mind with each new content release all departments have 20 working days from start to finish. The departments being; Concept Design, Level Design, Writers, Sound Design / VO, 3D modeling/Texture Design, Environmental Lighting & Design, Scripting/Code programmers, UI/UX Department, QA Testing, Balance Department, and I’m sure more I’m forgetting. A small team organizing all these departments to release this amount of original content with this many moving parts in 20 days (even if 20% needs bug fixes and fine tuning for the first few days after release) should be appreciated.
I’m not saying there haven’t been naive missteps along the way or that these won’t continue, but these are to be expected when pioneering such a high risk / high reward philosophy to adding new content to an MMO. This ‘Living World’ approach being such a unique development style ArenaNet is learning and fine tuning all elements of this workflow while simultaneously supporting content that is already live.
Also to be kept in mind the entire staff of ArenaNet are far more motivated to please their customer base and to make this game the best it can be than anyone simply playing the game or posting on the forums. It’s not only their labor of love but their livelihood which motivates them to work as hard as they do at this impressive pace.
So you give an excuse for ANets faulty decision to set a development cycle shorter than they need to produce quality content?
They should have realized after some of their LS releases that they just fail in producing quality content in time. The only reasonable thing would have been to lengthen the cycles.
But no, people defend crappy, buggy content because of a stupid decision made 15 monthes ago. Where is the logic behind that?
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
Yeah expect this idea these “unique snowflakes” have was the selling point to this game when it came out.. So people ARE entitled for playing how they want.
There’s an additional factor. The devs have been talking about “build diversity” as a design goal for quite some time. Required bosses that want lots of berserker gear is rather contrary to that goal.
Maybe, just maybe, “build diversity” is also about every character being able to be tuned/customized to fit better different purposes and not exactly about allowing every mixture of random builds to be succesful in any context.
Nope, build diversity is pretty much dead and that since not far after release. With DPS (DD) being the only role that exists in PvE, everything besides that is obsolete.
But this is not the players fault, it is just bad game design.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium

The Leveling & Open World Compendium
Thank you for creating Guild Wars 2, a game I have spent many hours in, enjoying the world. Many of us have seen the game evolving for about one year and a half.
For the profession of the Mesmer, this evolving included some rather unpleasant adjustments, especially in the early days of balancing. But even now, looking into the not so distanced future, we have changes coming, that will again force players to change their playsyle.
I, for one, have bought GW2 to play PvE, not knowing that balancing around small group arena PvP is the main focus. But I also created a Norn for shapeshifting, well, everyone is a noob at one point. Some things are working, some things are not, that’s how you learn to get better with your profession and skills.
I also choose the Mesmer as my profession because of the idea of putting pressure on my enemy by confusing him with clones. That is porbably the reason, why I still like to play shatter, even though phantasm builds have surpassed shatter builds by a mile in PvE nowadays. I even switch to a clone-death build in PvE from time to time but it is so underpowered that I would not recommend it, unless you like experimental playstyles.
Unfortunately, there are some dark clouds on the horizon. What your Dev’s call “cheesing” is in fact a not so simple decision for shatter mesmers in PvE. You have to sacrifice a potential dodge for the chance to deal more damage, leaving you more vulnerable.
Now we all know how important dodge is in PvE, as it is the main source of mitigation. The simple concept also works for clone-death builds, just with the exception that those builds simply don’t work well in PvE.
“Mesmers are magical duelists who wield deception as a weapon. Using powerful illusions, clones, and phantasmal magic to confuse and distract their foes, mesmers make sure every fight is balanced in their favor and their opponents can’t believe their eyes.”
This is harldy true for PvE anymore right now, but if the latest changes go live, I think you might want to rewrite the profession’s description. You once said you want to strengthen build diversity, but I now realize this was meant for PvP.
In PvE, every patch pushes Mesmers more and more towards playing phantasm builds, as they are already the strongest setup and will be even stronger compared to other builds after this new balancing patch. What is confusing about phantasm though?
Shatter builds will loose vigor, one of the main resources for clone generation, clone positioning for a fast shatter with the DE change (sometimes you want a clone right where you are for a shatter and not wait for some seconds till the other ones have managed to run to their target if it is the right target at all) and with the berserker gear change, damage will be even worse than it is nowadays (educated guess). I have to kindly ask you if any of your playtesters has ever played a shatter mesmer to not see the consequences of your changes to this playstyle.
Any clone-death build for PvE will be as dead as the Tequatl event on my server. I don’t even need to explain why this is obvious.
The irony is, that you won’t change gear stats too much for PvP, just for PvE. Why won’t you be finally consequent and realize, that balancing around PvP won’t work for PvE. You cater to two different crowds, most people who play mainly arena PvP do not give a kitten about PvE. And most people focusing on PvE do not care too much about what is going on in high end tournaments.
Some of the Dev’s of the first Guild Wars game understood this simple concept. And they used this knowledge: They balanced PvP for PvP and PvE for PvE. Was it perfect? No. But what Arenanet is doing with GW2 is far far worse. You are breaking one part of the game for the sake of an other.
People will tell me to wait and see the changes first. Do so if you want. I won’t be around to see this changes go live. Someone made me an offer I can’t refuse.
I wish you the best with the progression of you game and hope (partly for personal interest) that you one day will manage to give us the build variety in PvE you were talking about.
Best regards
Kaiyanwan

Anet is making a change to the LS lately, they are shifting away from on-time LS to seasonal content and permanent content.
Why do you think they do so? The setup of a one-time event mmo was doomed to burn out players. And as I have explained will not bring back those who left.
I am 100% certain, that at one point most of the content will be permanent/seasonal and content that will disappear will mostly be just gem store fluff…
