As you may very well know, it’s impossible to place superior runes on Masterwork (the highest obtainable underwater breather level) items. It’s not an issue in PvP of course, but I’d like my 6th rune slot to function underwater rather than not be there at all in PvE/WvW. I haven’t seen any discussion on this and the search function failed to bring up past threads, so I thought if start a discussion and remind ANet about the underwater breathers they seemingly forgot about after launch.

EDIT: Apparently my Gavbeorne’s breather just sucks and won’t take superior runes ;-;

Maybe his server is Kaineng and he just doesn’t know why the largest 5 guilds on the server moved away. Posts like these wreck the morale of players, and lead to even more people quitting the game (not that GW2 is suffering, contrary to your unprovable claims). I hate when people post things like this.

No other /MMO/ in the past 4 years has shipped with the amount of content. The amount of /end-game/ content is a different story, considering the entire game in its entirety is the end-game.

Perhaps you’d like to link us your account screen to prove that you’re an experienced player whos explored every facet of the game including 100% map completion, all 3 Order storylines, obtained your legendary and ranked up in both sPvP and WvW? I’m sorry, but until you’ve done all of these please refrain from acting as though you’re the authority on what the game did right and wrong. I’ve done all of these and I can personally say that ArenaNet packed a kitten lot of content in the game, and I’m kitten proud of them.

Thank you, ArenaNet.

PS: Do your research, OP.

I love lurking and watching Trav defend his initial point by going off on tangents that have nothing to do with or support said initial point.

The fact is that it isn’t close to “the best build”. There is no omnipotent zerg-busting, solo-roaming, win-button build. We have build variety for a reason, and you’ve told everyone in this thread who disagrees with you that our builds are sub-par to yours then challenge is to pointless duels in private messages. It’s sad and childish to assume that you have and created the best build out there and then refuse to believe those of us who say otherwise.

I’ve said it before. Posts like this, and the majority of the posts I see by you, Travlane, show the epitome of what people hate about egotistical thieves that rub it in when they win 1 battle out of 9. Stop it, for the sake of the community.

Your intent may not have been a thread directing the devs to nerf thieves, but that’s what it’s become. There’s a high risk factor to every fight when playing glass, yet people don’t see it. Invisibility =/= invulnerability. A successful attack against a stealthed GC thief does significant damage and they often cripple under heavy AoE (which the ele has a lot of!).

Stop calling for an all-out nerf to thieves. In Street Fighter did you spam buttons against every opponent you fought against? You probably didn’t get far in the game if you did. Learning to fight other classes is the same way. A simple dodge can mess up a glass thief’s entire rotation and at that point, they have very little initiative left. Your ele is obviously as glassy as they come judging by how quickly you went down and you’re exactly the type of player glass cannon thieves excel in killing: slow, unresponsive, and definitely NOT wearing any sort of PTV gear.

Had you built for more survivability, that thief would never have had a shot at killing you while you were in the midst of your group. Don’t blame the thief for your failure. Blame yourself and get better instead of being a bad player whining about being ganked on the forums.

Smoke bomb performs pretty fairly in PvE, contrary to the above post, only if you’ve traited into Shadow’s Rejuvenation. The extra heal boost from stealth in the downed state is amazing for second winds in low-DPS builds. I just wish that the downed state autoattack would apply bleeding so that condition builds are given a chance there as well.

As I’ve said in another thread, it’s too much of an all-around nerf to thieves and changes the playstyle of sword dramatically. I’d love to see inf return and shadow return both regain their abilities to remove 2 conditions, and maintain the cast time of infiltrator’s return but revert it to an actual stun break. That, I think, would be a fair trade off for the dramatic shift that’s about to hit.

Feedback/Questions: MegaServer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Viking Jorun.5413

I’ve been through my share of MMOs, and generally when a game comes out and says, “We’re making one big server for all of our players to occupy!” it translates to, “Our game’s population is dwindling and we’re consolidating servers to save costs and artificially improve the live of the game.”

I know for a fact that GW2’s population isn’t dwindling, but the idea of a megaserver and what it’s generally meant for most games who go that route is that it leaves a source taste in the eyes of those who are merely a passerby or are watching the game in hopes that it succeeds/fails. I get that it’s meant to improve the life of certain maps that are otherwise deserted due to a lack of content, but I’d like to hear the thought behind it and get a better sense of what’s going on technically. It doesn’t seem very well-communicated at the current moment.

  1. Are servers being consolidated?
  2. How will this affect maps that have multiple overflows all the time, and will server pride still be a thing?
  3. What’s the general goal behind the Megaserver system and what, on a technical level, is it meant to achieve?

These are more questions directly involving the devs, but I’d also like to hear some community opinions on the matter. After seeing SWTOR do a “megaserver” (consolidate the population to save the game), it has me worried about the life of the game despite the seemingly booming population as of late.

PSA: Stealth is not invincibility

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Viking Jorun.5413

Ok, let me try and see if I got this straight;

“If you have a melee weapon, spam dat #1” right?

If you have a ranged weapon and cant switch out of it (elementalist) then you are screwed, right? Further more, the thief is dumb enough to stay around melee range for 3-4 autoattacks instead of coming in quickly and doing their nice 14-16k Backstab…..sounds about right?

Im sorry but thats just a pathetic excuse to stealth currently, if the thief decides to run away there is no way a #1 will stop that. If a thief decides to come in quickly instead of hanging around you for 3 seconds then thats tactic is useless. How about you play other classes that dont need to relay in a cheap mechanic such as stealth, specialy in game where it has been done virtually uncounterable and that gives a lot more benefices besides the already strong invisibility?

Only bad thieves (most of them apparently) die to these cheap tactics. And I dont think that even if they were to somehow be effective, that these are the right way to approach this problem. How about we get some real counterplay here, like say, hard CC can know a thief out of stealth after a 1 second grace? Sounds like something that could lend to skillful plays

I run a full burst D/D spec and my backstabs generally only crit for 6-8k. You’re sorely mistaken if you think that we can hit you for over 10k if you have even remotely close to full exotic armor. My autoattacks generally hit for 1k, 1k then 2 2k hits. Again, you’re making it seem like we’re some sort of unstoppable killing machine when in fact we can be out-DPS’d by warrior and phantasm mesmer easily. We also have 3 seconds that we’re revealed after coming out of stealth.

I’d suggest doing your homework before having the audacity to vomit numbers in thief territory. Melee is surprisingly hard to “just get out of” when we’re only in stealth for a few seconds, so feel free to serenade me with these false accusations more. Rangers have plenty of AoE. That’s your best bet against a stealthed thief.

I’ll let the masses eat your post alive, and I advise you to do some actual research before making absurd claims for the class which is at the bottom of the totem pole in both PvE and PvP. How about we remove the bleed off of ranger shortbow and see how you feel, then make every one of your attacks a root? Sounds about fair for what you’re asking be done to the thief.

The problem is that Jeff and Ree are either very busy with building the overarching lore (and giving into the subpar ideas of the new writers) or are held back so the LS writing team can have their “fun.”

I can’t comment on what Ree and Jeff are working on, but I can say that I’m ultimately responsible for the quality of the Living World story. I don’t imagine we’ll please everyone with our new direction, but that’s true of any story. That stated, I encourage people to leave their feedback. Just please be respectful.

Mm, no, the problem might be that the LS writers are trying to have it be “fun and entertaining” as opposed to “stirring and exquisite writing”. Which is good, because people shooting for “stirring and exquisite writing” sometimes risk missing the mark and moving right on into “boring and pretentious” or too far into “just plain boring”. Like shooting for Inception and instead getting Minority Report.

This is true.

like it but feather skirt is horribly modeled.
The idea is great but being hard to model in 3d it has issues.

As a professional character artist I desist. It’s extremely easy to model what you want in 3D. You have complete control over how it looks in the initial modeling phase and only slightly less control when you import the base mesh into Mudbox or zBrush. The skirt should be exactly how it was intended had the character artists done their jobs properly, and judging by their pay grade in order to live in the Seattle/Bellevue area I’d say they do a pretty kitten good job at what they do since losing their jobs wouldn’t exactly let them live in the area long.

The issue I see is in extracting the diffuse and normal maps, and how ArenaNet likes to use flat surfaces that they smush their UVs onto, resulting in distortions from the original design. (Although by simply tweaking verticies you can achieve the original affect quite nicely with little effort).

All in all, if the armor isn’t how it was intended to look, it was rushed. Plain and simple.

On second viewing, it doesn’t even look like they modeled a high poly mesh in order to get this armor done. The lack of normal mapping and flat diffuse textures infers that they simply photoshopped their own rendition of the concept artist’s texture onto the flat polygon surfaces rather than doing it the long way to achieve an accomplished result.

Water combat: great or suicidal?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

Underwater combat is all about CC. When I was in Team Legacy before they left GW2, we made it a staple to utilize underwater combat and required everyone in the guild to have full underwater exotic gear, even going out of our way to run the event every once in a while to gain access to Gavebeorn’s breathers. No enemy would follow us into the water and at many points, we were farming them. It’s all about coordination. When you have an entire 25-man organized zerg of the same guild diving the the bottom of the lake around Bay and coordinating attacks in order (guardian spikes, ele cages, mesmer pulls), it’s pretty scary. We never lost a GvG fight underwater and it’s because we spent weeks on end theorycrafting the best possible ways to use it to our advantage while the rest of the game preferred land combat any day. Those were also some of my best experiences with the Team.

Aside from that, you have a third dimension to worry about. You can’t think of underwater combat as two-dimensional like the rest of the combat in the game with the added Z-axis, and using that to your advantage will confuse your enemies more than a top tier mesmer. Your attacks will hit depending on the angle of your camera, so if you’re above them and aim down, you’ll hit from above. Same with from below. Positioning is a key part in determining the outcome of an underwater fight, and while there may not be too many blocks or conditions underwater, there are two things you can count on: direct damage and CC. Every class has both in multiple forms of some type on each weapon underwater. That’s the underwater meta.

almost every single set of pants for Charr, look exactly alike.

I don’t mean the details, but rather the “Form”. It’s like they made one single “Mesh” for it and then just pasted the Texture for every single Leggins onto that Mesh without changing the Rigging one bit beyond using “Scaling” in all 3 Axis at once.

…& yes these are CG modeling terms…

One of these days I’ll see if I can produce some sketches of what they should have done instead of this “copy past Plantigrade rigging onto Beastly Cat Legs” stuff…

I don’t think you know anything about character art. As someone who’s worked professionally as a character and environment artist I can safely say that not one charr pants mesh is the same model. The textures and normal maps are entirely different and many of the pants have entirely different physics to the cloth. They do, of course, rig them all the same way, but that’s how all character models are. You have your base mesh which is rigged and you bind and paint weights onto the armor on top of said rig. ArenaNet does some extra work by removing unseen polygons to reduce the overall triangle count as well, which also saves internal clipping issues in the character itself. I wouldn’t doubt it if ANet character artists used PM_HeatWeight to rig their armors in time for launch though. It gets any rig 95% percent correct, but often you have to go in and paint the weights for fine details to avoid clipping.

Yup i did understand what you said correctly. Once again Auras don’t stack intensity/duration whatever you want to call it. They are not like boons. Each fire Aura from a leap finisher will last 5 seconds and NOT stack with each other.

Go ahead and try it. You’re obviously stuck in your opinion and would rather argue when I could go ahead and record video proof of a mouseover of fire aura after two consecutive leap finishers.

You say that they don’t function as buffs, however the wiki states that Auras act as irremovable buffs, stacking duration and not intensity as other buffs do. Please, go onto some other thread if you’re so enclosed in your own opinion to neglect testing or research.

Condi is the way to go (in pvp)

in Ranger

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

My reasoning is that emphatic bond is mandatory for any effective high tier ranger build. We always have to have that 300 condi dmg, so viable builds make use of it.

Survival of the fittest was a mistake, power builds need the condi removal from the trait but cannot sacrifice the traits to bring it. Ideally it should be a grandmaster skirmishing trait. Condi builds could not make use of the trait with a practical build and power builds could have effective condi clear without losing significant damage.

I really wish people would test things before spreading information like this. Any ranger taking Healing Spring is going to have 10 seconds of the best condition removal in the game. For the next 30 seconds, however, you’re forced to play on the defensive or carefully at the very least. It’s a trade off.

Condition builds have always had the benefit of being able to build tanky while outputting the same DPS passively that power builds require active input to achieve at a much greater risk. All that said, I rarely have issues against condition builds. Conditions only become an issue for my power build when facing more than one opponent who can overload you with conditions (i.e. 2 engineers, necromancers), which most classes have a high weakness against.

The one mechanic to balance thieves forever

in Thief

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

2500 hours and rank 37 isn’t much to brag about. Farming Skyhammer you could have gotten there in mere days, and even without it and playing semi-casually it would only take a couple of months. Rank does not ensue authority on balance. Sorry to be “that guy”, but you’re obviously out of touch with PvP if you don’t realize that blind outlasts stealth, shield stance and endure pain outlast stealth, there are mass AoE blinds everywhere on point, and thief is the only one who can quickly take down a spirit ranger who does have AoE blind access on sun spirit.

The fact is that there’s too much going on for this to make any effective balance at all, because players would simly start taking plenty of aegis/blinds/evade spam and thief would immediately be shut out of PvP. Until they fix the rest of the game, make backstab/sneak attack/tactical strike unblockable and thief immune to blind while in stealth, I don’t see this ever being a viable option to “balance” the thief. ArenaNet simply isn’t this misguided as to destroy a profession with one adjustment to a skill/stealth.

I also see that you’re swapped to shortbow for this screenshot, and I highly doubt that you run anything but S/P with little access to stealth (utilities) due to your simple demands to change a function without seeking the repercussions and consequences. On the off-chance that you do run D/P, think about these things before you go and post them on the forums, and at least explain to people (and more importantly the devs) how this could impact the game and class, because it would break the thief on all but S/P.

Sorry to be “that guy” but you’re out of touch with how balancing should work. If an enemy stealth and you use a defensive ability such as endure pain or shield block, why should the thief get a free hit? What you don’t understand is risk vs reward.

FYI – I see nothing wrong with his utilities and heal. Withdraw is one of the best heals the thief has. He is also stealth heavy since he has BP and SR. S/P thiefs usually take IS for the extra port. Regarding D/P, this ends stealth stacking as the second HS will reveal you. If you want to stack stealth, you have to time it right before stealth ends to HS again. I like it!

Regarding the OP suggestion, I see nothing wrong with it. It punish thief that just spam stealth attack over and over again until it hit instead of timing your attack. I do agree with others that the hit should be more reliable. If you can’t survive 2 secs outside of stealth, holy kitten l2p.

Please humor me more.

One defensive capability is fine, and tactical. You’re the one out of touch, my friend, because you should know very well as I do that when something is 100% effective in shutting something out, it becomes the focus of the meta. When a meta develops to have near constant aegis and blinds, that’s where the problem arises (hello PU Mes, Well of Darkness necro, and focus guardian). The suggestions you’re rebutting against weren’t meant for serious consideration. They are there to suggest one of the only ways you could balance the thief through the OP’s suggestion, however you’ve fixated on that to attempt to tell the world that I don’t know what I’m talking about, despite the rest of the post being well-thought and a constructive counterargument.

Why do you hate Warriors?

in PvP

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

I main a warrior, and although my w/l ratio is almost 2:1, I run my thief in tPvP more often due to the constant hate that we warriors get. Personally, I hate most warriors and get why others do, and it’s as simple as the fact that 98% of all warriors run the same full zerker greatsword/x setup and rely on some sort of stun and 100b to take people down, then make some smug remark when they do as if they think that they’re better than everyone else when 4/5 fifths of the match you’ve taken them down without a problem.

I run a longbow/axe+axe DPS/condition hybrid on my warrior and still get those hate messages almost every time I kill someone in tPvP, or get told to play a class that requires skill. When warriors start playing smart and quit acting elitist simply because they can own anything in PvE, I’ll respect them. Even for me, someone who’s mained a warrior since the 3-day head start, I’ve only found respect for 4 warriors I’ve ever met, only one of which uses a greatsword at all. It’s not warriors that suck, only those who use a widely overused cookie-cutter min-max build that fails every time if its rotation is interrupted in any way.

I hope my point is clear enough. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. It takes a lot of skill to effectively play a warrior in any type of PvP. Most warriors don’t have about face, sheath weapons, or even look-behind key bound; all of which key bindings aren’t even warrior-specific, but things that any skilled player will have and use regularly.

Play smart, don’t use the same one-trick kill rotation every time, because 3 out of 4 times it won’t bring you anything but your own death. — my message to warriors.

It’s pretty insane when condition builds use this. Even with my thief who has extreme condition removal, the counter-play is tedious as hell.

No offense, but stop arguing from a thief point of view.
It wont add anything useful to the topic.

@topic:
I main engineer since bwe1 and right now i abuse this rune like there is no tomorrow.
ITs OP, everyone knows it and only fools or beginners deny that. Srsly you can build a character which main source of damage is this rune and it will work.
I would like to try some of the other new condition-damage runes but i cant. This rune is so strong that it outshines every other condition-rune available.

Get over yourself. My opinion isn’t invalid solely due to the fact that I’m a thief. I don’t run some backstab build like any other thief, and I personally think stealth as a crutch. Please humor me more if you feel that thieves are incompetent here on the forums because you hate us as a class.

My point wasn’t that I’m a thief. My point was that at any given moment I have 6 on-demand sources of condition removal, only two of which have a cooldown. The perplexity engineers and warriors are almost too much for my build, which was built as a hard counter to both conditions and stuns. When something like this comes along and can consistently stack 25 stacks which I’m forced to abuse my condition removal on, there’s a problem. I can understand condition burst necros, where they waste everything at the beginning, however this isn’t front-loaded and there is little room for error when fighting one of these, even with high condition removal and tolerance to CC.

The one mechanic to balance thieves forever

Personally, I think the TTK on everything needs to be brought up. Berserker already suffered a burst-potential nerf, however I don’t think it was enough in my personal opinion, and conditions are over the top as we can all agree. Games become more skill based when it takes longer than 3 seconds to down your opponent.

Some people like being an underdog, that way an opponent has no excuse as to why they lost. They just got outplayed.

I want to get rid of thieves

Just reroll. I did so, and now bring the pain. Stun locking people is so much easier, and they complain a lot less due the fact they can see me. Never mind stun locking and tons of CC are a much cheaper mechanic. How many stun breaker do you roll? Not enough. Have a few friends, bring em, I will smash them too…. And kill enough and surive long enough for my friends to show up.

Thieves were balanced a while ago, and have since grown weaker but the QQ has only increased. Nerfed and nerfed again, I just gave up on my favorite class. Not because I hard to work harder, which I do on my thief, not because I had to rebuild over and over again, which I have, but because bads will cry when they lose to classes like thief because they can’t admit they were out played.

Funny thing, on my warrior, I never lose to thieves. I enjoy the bags they drop, and it is even better when I get to kill two at a time. But bad players are not the issue, stealth is, of course…

Thieves weren’t nerfed that hard. perma stealth is still very easy. I find the class very easy.

Please don’t confuse “the class” with “one build”.

Honestly, I think Waypoint upgrades should be replaced with research into one of the Orders. Priory research, for example, could give a single commander while defending a keep or SM the ability to transform into the Balthazar avatar from the personal story, Vigil might be some sort of super weapon, and Whispers might be.. Well, you get the idea.

At this rate Anet might delete PvP......

To those claiming that the skins are good enough: they aren’t. There is no prestige involved in the skins (except for 25-30 which were actually hard to obtain) which anyone could have gotten 5 months into the game. The time it took to invest 50/50 was immensely satisfying, yet you see another Champion Of The Gods title nearly everywhere you go. I feel that this minor boost (yes, minor) gives some leeway to those of us who dedicated our time to the original game. When I logged in after the patch, I found myself caught up to my friends who had only finished more dailies and nothing else than I (now we’re all around 7000 AP).

I hope they don’t revert this. I really do.

Team Legacy has been discussing this subject for the last two weeks and is in the process of potentially creating a new WvW meta for Kaineng. More info as we progress.

P.S. – If you don’t have full exotics, get them. Everyone we fight will have them. If you have full exotics, get ascended gear.

Where did you get your precursor?

Leaf of Kudzu: a gift from a friend in return for standing up for him after he was constantly harassed by people who were jealous of the copious amounts of gold he had via playing the TP early in the game. I was just being a good friend.
