The Harpoon Gun, also known as Spear Gun (not to be confused with Spear), is a long range mechanical aquatic weapon. Harpoon guns can be crafted by a huntsman.

The Spear, also known as Harpoon, is a close quarters aquatic weapon. Spears can be crafted by a weaponsmith.

There’s some great tips on getting the various Weapon Master achievements (including aquatic) in the Wiki:

WTB harsher punishment for leavers/AFKers

Allison The Strange.4519

If you punish leavers too severely you’ll inadvertently punish people who have power surge, power loss, ISP issues, emergency situation etc… If your saying you’ve never had this issue I’d like to point out we all don’t live in the perfect location where we can run an extension cord directly from the power plant and an ethernet cable directly into GW2 servers… Crap happens, deal with it…

Now if you actually made a post that took longer than 5 seconds to formulate such as adding the thought “If they left x number of matches in x amount of time” I would be more empathetic. Sadly this is not well thought out or planned post and I feel entirely unsympathetic to your complaint. Have a good day.

Elite Spec Changes?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: UnbentMars.9126

UnbentMars.9126

Also, thinking ahead, what happens when the next elite spec comes along? Another weapon type, 5 more utilities, and a new class gimmick?

Actually, that’s exactly what we expect with future elite specs. The choice of which elite you run is a trade off. Its about making choices. The elite lines are a “package” that changes your class into something slightly more than what it was; however, you can only be one specialty with all that it entails. In the long run it “should” help keep some potential power creep issues in check, but we’ll see.

Are they going to rework the old specs to feature the same?

I’m assuming you’re asking are they going to change the core lines to have some weapon or skill locked to them? So you can’t use that weapon and skill set if you don’t take it? I doubt it. They’d have done it with the revamp of the system, and from what they said when they introduced “specializations,” locking was something special to elite specs for assorted reasons.

Ahh, so they intend to add more “elite” specializations, which will be mutually exclusive? That makes more sense. With just the one it’s a bit awkward, since you lose out on a lot of power/utility by not taking the elite spec, even if one of the other specializations would be a better fit if only taking into account the traits themselves.

That should work, as long as it’s balanced properly.

It looks like the plan is to release a new Elite Spec for each profession upon the release of every expansion. Right now it’s kind of odd because there’s only one, but as more get released it’ll make more sense and actually be an incredible source of build variation

If you didn’t buy it directly from Anet contact the retailer you got it from and see if they can refund you.

(Bear in mind the sale only applies to Anet’s website, so other retailers might still be selling it at full price. Which means you might have to get it refunded by them and then buy it from Anet.)

I have 24 characters and what I’ve done is buy them each one set of Orichalcum tools, and equip them. My unlimited ones are in the shared inventory slots, and all I have to do is double click each one when I log onto my character, and when I’m about to log off, double click again to re-equip the Orichalcum ones. It was a bit awkward at first, but now I’m in the habit of doing it, it second nature now to do this when switching characters.

On the ‘Waa Waa’ bit – there are people from all aspects of the game that ‘Waa Waa’ from time to time. Not just what you label as ‘PvE players’ – the only label we should all have is ‘GW2 Players’ instead of dividing each other. But I guess that’s a different topic altogether.

MISTER PROSSER:
But Mister Dent the plans have been available in the planning office for the last nine months!

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes! I went round to find them yesterday afternoon. You’d hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to pull much attention to them have you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.

MISTER PROSSER:
The plans were on display.

ARTHUR DENT:
Ah! And how many members of the public are in the habit of casually dropping around the local planning office of an evening?

MISTER PROSSER:
Er – ah!

ARTHUR DENT:
It’s not exactly a noted social venue is it? And even if you had popped in on the off chance that some raving bureaucrat wanted to knock your house down, the plans weren’t immediately obvious to the eye were they?

MISTER PROSSER:
That depends where you were looking.

That’s the display department.

MISTER PROSSER:
The lights, had… probably gone.

ARTHUR DENT:
So had the stairs!

MISTER PROSSER:
Well you found the notice didn’t you?

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying “Beware of the Leopard”. Ever thought of going into advertising? _

But if you are an ele and having an issue with that room just equip rebound, mist form, arcane shield and lightning flash. If you need practice just roll that fractal a few times until you can get to the different spots without an issue. Shields aren’t needed but make it easier. Practice with or without them. I do this with minimal issues on ele at higher levels.

I understand you are frustrated. But there’s plenty of groups doing this daily with pugs without issue.

Guild Hall Closing "Bug"

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: daemonis.2937

daemonis.2937

Here to help!

This occurs because of how instancing works in the game. Since at launch instances were never meant to host more than 5 players, they needed to work into the system a way to create an instanced area that COULD host more than 5 players without taking up too much space on the servers.

To do this, once more than 5 players enter a guild hall, a new instance opens that has more open slots to host more players, this is why it shifts you. For bigger guilds, this can even happen again at either 20-50 members all being in the same guild hall at once (my guild never has this many players on to test this, but I do believe it is 20!). Once the BIGGER instance opens, the smaller one closes, instead of having max size instances all open at all times. It reduces server load as once the number drops down below 3 players in the instance, it reopens the smaller one to move you all back there.

It IS a matter of optimization, not a bug. It’s just something that will have to be dealt with until they either rework instancing ENTIRELY or find a way to make instances dynamic without too much work. But again, that may require the servers to hold too much empty information at once.

I hope this helps!

LOL, I still can’t get the idea why people keep using that stupid argument.

If zerg or blob have supplies, they CAN build multiple sieges and they WILL build multiple sieges. Repair hammer doesn’t change that, at all. Repair hammer, from what I can tell, will only be extremely useful for golems after a assault and for defensive use. Attackers thinking of using supplies to repair sieges are dumb, I will rather build 9 cata than use 6 cata worth of supplies to repair 3 cata.

Glicko making it impossible for CD to move T3

  • Will Glicko ratings be adjusted before or after a match?
Glicko ratings are temporarily adjusted at exactly the time of matchmaking. The adjustment will never be visible. We’re not actually modifying any world’s rating, just preventing matchmaking from letting worlds drift away from the others.
  • Why not just change the links again?
World links change on a schedule to maintain some stability. Among other reasons, those who maintain voice chat servers don’t have to redo permissions every week. We also wouldn’t want to start shifting world links around on a subjective whim. The frequency of the schedule was previously determined by a public poll.
  • Why have Glicko ratings?
Strictly on the functional side of reasoning: matchmaking. No doubt within the space of all possible ways to calculate matchups in WvW (both pre-existing and unwritten) there exists one or more better solutions. Matchmaking in WvW is a very different scenario from what any matchmaking system I’m aware of aims to solve.

Other matchmaking systems, such as 1-up-1-down, have been discussed in the past. We’ve not previously been convinced that they’d be significant enough improvements to prioritize them over other work. One of the bigger problems with 1-up-1-down is that at natural barriers, two teams would commonly swap week after week, leaving three teams (the one that went up, and the two that remained where it was) getting steamrolled every other week.

Since alternate matchmaking systems require some of the same peoples’ time as the scoring improvements we’re currently working on, Glicko alternatives or adjustments may be options in future polls once the scoring improvement work is done.

Will HoT story be mandatory for LWS3?

Since I don’t have a lot of time to play, tend to mess around with my lower-level toons, and dislike the HoT zones, I have not yet finished the HoT story. In fact, the furthest I got was after Eir's death and you enter Auric Basin. I sincerely hope that LWS3 is a separate story from HoT. However, if it is not, then I guess I’ll be locked out of it until I beat HoT. I don’t even raid or do many of the events, so I’m out of the loop when it comes to understanding what’s been going on in GW2. Something about ley line energy and bandits.

I’ll appreciate any insight you guys can give me, even if it’s just speculation!

LWS3 will pick up right where HoT left off. So yes, you Should complete that first, otherwise you’ll be completely lost. However, if you log in when a living story episode is released, you can unlock it for free permanently. So just unlock it and play it when you actually reach that point. No need to rush or worry.

Trait System Rework?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Cyninja.2954

Cyninja.2954

Professions and combat are the main core game elements, and almost everything is designed around these professions and how combat unfolds… These areas are greater than your content drought…

True, but you have failed to show how the current system is so bad or underdeveloped that it needs fixing. All that has happened so far in this thread is a couple of people have voiced their subjective opinion on this matter.

All in all, the complaints about the new trait system have died down after a period of accustomisation.

Also the argument here is for a revamp and change of the current system. This has nothing to do with balance. That is a sepperate issue entirely unless you show how the current system has such big flaws that balance would not be possible.

You are silly if you think the devs can’t work on multiple things…

Anything the developers do costs ressources. In this case mostly human ressources. While some things might take less extra time, every bit of extra work will ultimately require something else to be put on hold. Especially if you are working on something as complex as a complete combat revamp.

Who is kidding himself in this case I wonder?

Edit- spend some time on the profession, pvp and wvw forums and you’ll see the complaints that far outweigh this content drought.

Please show me a time when the pvp/wvw forums were not full of complaints. It’s in the nature of the game mode and it’s competative nature that people will blame others or balance instead of their own mistakes.

That being said, please do go read the wvw forums. The main issue there will be content drought (which has been a topic for over 1.5 years now or even longer) and not class balance. Especially since the new HoT maps failed and the old borderlands had to be reintroduced.

Edit 2- and your content is coming on the 26th. Your content xpac is being worked on by 100 devs. Your raid content is being worked on… You may not value profession improvements, but there are players who do, so don’t think this team is not capable of fulfilling important requests like these too…

You still haven’t shown that a revamp would improve the situation nor have you shown that the current system is flawed.

To argue that “look your content is coming” so people should stop demanding content or focus on content just shows your inexperience with MMO titles. Content developement is a constant process. As such ressource allocation is vital (read MO last post about how much work goes into Season 3) and when faced between a working trait and skill system versus game content, I doubt a majority of players will select the former as priority currently or in the near future.

Raids Discussion rant from Wooden Potatoes

Funny thing the main intention of WP’s video isn’t in the foreground of this thread and several posts:
Hard but accessible content (and yes raids are accessible) has been present at all times in the GW universe even at start of GW2.
It is obviously clear that players who don’t want to put effort into something (here: raids), are complaining about the raid content instead of starting to organise things.
Everyone can beat this “hard” content but not everyone is willing to.
The mentioning of pugs using high amounts of LIs is just a marginalia and not the important conclusion of WP in his video.

My personal opinion on the LI thingy: I have nothing against faking LIs if a player is experienced and he is able to handle the encounter but if he pings thousands of them and fail horribly then he is a clown in my eyes and deserves to be kicked! Sadly such things happen too often so I like it if groups claiming to ping the unfakable buff of the tonic in addition. It doesn’t protect you from getting a buyer or a lucky guy that has been carried some day but it lowers the uncertainty and the probability of getting an inexperienced guy producing trouble inside the pug.

Took me 3 runs of the dungeon to get the bug.

GW2 WvW...what's the point?

in WvW

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

It is fairly clearly stated

WvW is designed to accommodate players that would not normally participate in PvP. For instance, the high player limit means that a new player can get involved without immediately feeling pressured to contribute. In addition, objectives are available for a variety of group sizes, so players don’t need to be members of dedicated guilds in order to be productive.

Also, anonymous naming as well makes it a bit more inviting to pve’rs. Being able to come and leave as you choose also matches the fairly casual nature of Gw2, and to some PvE would be too boring anyways. So this is an extension, and possibly an endgame to some.

The way I see it, WvW was mostly meant to be the bridge to esports PvP. They wanted PvErs to be exposed to player vs player combat but in a more familiar and less stringent environment. In addition in the past, WvW performance also influenced PvE as an additional lure along with stuff like map completion. Of course, PvP didn’t live up to the hype and the game became centered around PvE, leaving WvW sort of just hanging there. And WvW at a certain point being too popular for its own good, perhaps even overshadowing esports in the eyes of some, it might have led to some degree of resentment by certain people in charge and overall not really knowing or understanding what to do with what was left.

It would seem to me that this is a pve centric game with WvW catching quite the peripheral fanbase that is unique enough to not fit into Arenanet’s paradigm of how their player base would be (pve/pvp). This is illustrated in the infamous statements where some thought we were definitely into pvde. A lot of the rest of the game is alright, but it would not have been enough to keep me around.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,

Are Builds Broken?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: General Health.9678

General Health.9678

So I’m just wondering are the build/skills broken?

No they aren’t.

When (and even before) GW2 came out, I remember the hype about how the skills are so varied, and traits are so different that you can play GW2 any way that you want.

And it turned out that wasn’t that great a thing. When evaluated, the 600 different permutations had 300 really bad one and several thousand people had rolled those, giving them not only just a sub-optimal experience but a really, really bad one.

However, you can’t play anyway that you want.
There are some builds that just don’t work. Some traits and skills that are, quite frankly pointless.

Under the new system there aren’t builds that “just don’t work”. If they didn’t work you wouldn’t be able to create them, log in as them and play the game on them. Have you got any examples of what you mean and in which game type?

There are even some players, where all I see is the metabuild running everywhere.

And? Not sure what your point is. Players using meta builds? Surely this is a good thing? Only some players but you see them everywhere? Are you talking about guildies?

unless you run the metabuild, you don’t seem to be able to keep up, to participate as much, and be as effective.

Keep up with whom? You may not do as much damage with a non-meta build or not heal as much but you should be able to keep up by pressing the forward button. Participation is on the 1 button and effectivenes.. well that’s the definition of the meta build. The most effective one. So this is a tautology.

That to me, sounds broken

Well no, to me you sound confused about what the meta is and why it is. I can log in with my meta build and play the game. It’s working.

Fractals are fine the way they are. The fractal level is all the scaling that they need, if you are having trouble, go down to a lower scale of that same fractal.

And honestly I don’t think there is any fractal that requires a 4 person party, and I know there aren’t any that require a full 5 person party, for you to succeed. Hell there are people who can solo fractal 100. But back to my point most fractals in the lower tiers can easily be done with 2 or 3 people who know what they are doing, or even 1 person who has completely mastered their class. If you have only once finished a fractal with a 4 person group then you guys all need more practice. Downscaling it is not the solution.

For me it’s good enough to know that suggestions and concerns are being read. The only way the poster can know this is if they respond or tag them in a way that becomes apparent to the poster. As someone that does computer support for a living I know fully well that canned responses are needed as a time saver and understand if they had to use them. I have had to use them in a number of jobs. They are much better than silence.

We’ve been assured by Gaile that they DO get read. On the other side of the coin, Gaile’s said, that outside of extreme cases, we (players) hear nothing until it’s either about to come out in a patch or is going to be such a difficult thing to do that they need to wait until other system implementations occur. I believe she also said that a lot of the… “unconfirmed” suggestions do in fact get tested, but really dont work out, so nothing’s said in whatever thread(s) mentioning it.

Suggestions Wasted effort?

Personally, I totally believe it’s wasted effort. The selective communications cannot be defended. Posts in the “so called” official forum can reach thousands of views and many hundreds of responses and most don’t get a single response. That’s not just poor communication it’s insulting.

You don’t have to post a suggestion. No one is forcing you to do so. It has been explained ad nauseam why a response from Anet is unlikely, but you don’t have to believe their answers.

This drives players away from posting good possible changes and I’m convinced the game could be more fun for everyone if they simply set a limit on the number of posts or views and when the limit was reached, they respond to the issue.

Do you think people post because they want to see the game improved? Or do you think they post because they want a pat on the back with a “Good job!” or a thumbs up? Granted, those aren’t exclusive from each other, but attention seeking isn’t the best motivator for a forum where the devs have said they won’t be responding a lot (see above section). Edit: I do agree that tacit acknowledgement isn’t the best type for many people, but it’s what the devs have time for.

When so many players have limited time to play, how can there be an “expectation” of having to check the forums for threads, patch notes, survey results, Reddit, Sub reddit, Wiki, and other good intentioned personal websites for what seems to many players to be basic information? This tells me that the effort to hide and surprize outweighs the effort to communicate and what kind of business model is that?

This portion is so out of left field, I’m going to need you to clarify what you mean. Does this relate at all to Anet responding to suggestions? If you want Anet to give players information about updates, how would you prefer they do so? In game? Anet prefers to use the forums, but you seem to be looking for another manner.
