ArenaNet seems to be trying to balance the whole game around the “competitive” pvp mode because that’s where people care the most about balance. But sPVP is a closed environment with very specific constraints: first of all, it’s a Conquest game mode that forces people to fight on points. Maps are designed with lots of Line-of-sight breaks and are small. The pvp choice of amulets, runes and sigils offers a very strict and controlled environment. And the population is limited to 5 players per side.

WvW is nothing of that and balance should acknowledge it.

  • being able to customize your gear is great, but the availability of certain stat combinations and runes in WvW make for some builds that are not fun to play against, like perma stealth Dire condi trapper thieves/daredevils, druids or dragonhunters, or PU mesmers or necro/reapers with perplexity runes and Dire gear or fully tanky/healing druids, tempests, revenants or guardians.
  • thanks to gear customization and availability of ascended gear and food buffs, the power levels and damage output in WvW can be extremely higher, leading to builds and classes that can nearly instakill their enemies. Instakills are not fun for either side.
  • same goes for the amount of tank on some builds (especially healers and condition builds): fighting a seemingly immortal enemy is not fun.
  • the power creep started being intolerable when the traitlines were revamped and the stats moved from the traits to the gear and it became even worse with the release of HoT, since the new gear has even more stat points.
  • some thought must be put on the skills that affect multiple opponents because fights aren’t limited to 1-5 opponents in WvW.
  • “passive immortality” is a horrible thing. Right now, Warriors, Engineers and Necros are particularly bad, with traits that automatically save them. Guardian has a lot of those traits too. It seems like these passive traits are necessary because the class active play is insufficient to their survival and that means that there’s a balancing problem somewhere: either the burst damage is too high in general or the class doesn’t have enough active defense mechanics.
  • fixing the fact that is impossible for players to use their own ranged skills from the top of the walls would go a long way in making a nerf to arrow carts possible and make the game mode more about players and less about siege.

Countering the current meta

The current WvW meta (at least in the EU) for organized groups in WvW is heavily influenced by PvE raids: you can see groups buffing up before the fights and end up with dozens of seconds of Resistance and Quickness for example.

There’s a few ways to balance this. The first that comes to mind is to revise the boon duration across all classes and the boon share on mesmers, but that would probably affect PvE raids a lot and unlock another can of worms.

Another option is to make AoE boonstripping more widespread or more efficient, for example rework Null Field .

A third option would be to add new mechanics specifically tailored against boon sharing in PvP, like for example a new condition that works the opposite of Resistance, “disabling” the boons for a target for a very limited time.

In all honesty, GW2 is in desperate need of some sophisticated designed, elegant armours, because most of what we have now are sort of chunky, especially the heavy armour boots. Oh the horror!

I’d love some trousers for light armours, and mid or full length coats, or even long assymetrical male skirts, for medium – is it only me who finds the male Sneakthief set to be, by far, the best looking armour?

…and the gem store team should start thinking about creating more sets with separated parts, like the Viper set they gave us some time ago. I don’t understand this obsession with outfits.

Seriously though, every weapon on my mesmer clips through the skirts that they are forced to wear (aside from the 2 pants currently available which, let’s be honest, are pretty awful).

Why does the design team insist on all light armor being some kind of dress, skirt, skirt over pants, dress over pants…? How about, you know, some actual, cool looking pants for once?

I had to squint a lot, it’s nothing I’d see in the heat of combat, but the lines are there.

I do agree something bolder should indicate your icon. I love a lot of things about GW2’s minimalist UI but sometimes it mutes things too much (my big peeve is the use of grey text for active things, though that’s not a squad UI issue). If you need to drag yourself to another group, eg when going on boss team at the DS blighting trees, it takes a long time to find yourself.

I think they may have started putting squad members in alphabetical order, that’ll help for those willing to have the boxes big enough to see names.

Oil is extremely strong but it’s also stationary which means it’s easy to avoid in most cases.

I think a fair change would be to make it so that you do not need to be touching the pot of oil to use it. Instead, place a lever or button inside the structure on the ground, similar to how tactivators are placed, that you can use to operate the oil from afar.

This would eliminate any risk of taking damage on the players part without making the pot of oil more difficult to kill. Oil dies fairly quickly as is if enough people are focusing it down and as I’d said, it only has a very small radius of effect. I think it would be absolutely fair to remove the risk of taking damage while using it. It’s a totally different story with things like AC’s and cannons that can hit many different places however.

-can’t use ur utility skills while on the oil: stability, damage reduction, condi clear
-aoe gets through the oil shield
-oil shield acts as a block, and unblockables can get through it….unlike golemn shield
-after activating the oil shield it puts the other ability on a long kitten cd
-the aoe radii of the oil abilities is too small considering the other points
-oil does kitten damage to rams and siege and players
-oil 2 is a worthless skill (cripple), make it drip down across the gate like dragon banner5

It’s not Anet’s fault there’s crappy people out there that decide to play ranked pvp on a class they don’t know.

But it is Anet’s fault that it’s encouraged. No matter how you look at it, Anet is complicit.

The dailies should be consistent across all forms of pvp—hotjoin, unranked, and ranked.

I don’t really disagree with you on this.
Perhaps the best option is to remove profession-based PvP achievements altogether.

It’s been said before, but here it is again… People should not be encouraged via daily achievements to play a specific class in a competitive game mode. Not only does it have a negative effect on the overall class proficiency in the queue, but it also screws up team comps, pretty much all day every day.

Please remove profession dailies from Ranked.

Maybe Arena net should scrap the “Home borderland” concept and try make maps that are suposed to work in thirds (Like EBG or even EotM). Most activity in EBG tend to be around SMC. People flock to that one different thing that neither side have.

I’m pretty sure the desert borderland was also created with the thirds concept in mind (thus why the towers/keeps had the WP tied to the server that spawned at that side), but since people still had the ABL “Homeland” mentality, DBL ended up making a poor job (discount all the sheer hate for DBL).

I want to express my empathy with the OP – you are not alone, Tolira. We all hope the system is improved sooner rather than later. Hopefully the upcoming scoring changes go some way towards providing more appropriate matchups.

I believe you will be sorely disappointed if you are hoping that scoring will fix the primary issues with WvW. Scoring cannot fix population imbalances or coverage issues.

Changing scoring is the proverbial lipstick on a pig.

Scoring changes won’t solve population imbalance or coverage, true. But what it will do is to provide a goal and some incentive to get out there and fight. It will also give a sense of accomplishment.

One of the issues with WvW is that there isn’t really a point to it all. Everyone knows who’s going to win the match practically when it starts. So the only thing left is to play for fights and play for fun. But you can only do that for so long.

Humans need purpose. And if there’s no purpose then no matter how fun the fights are, people will get bored.

I whole heartedly agree with you. My guild has WvW events twice weekly where those who do mostly PvE come out to play with me and the few in our guild that WvW constantly. i had to warn them this week about the massive imbalance because those that would do more WvW get discouraged easily when they are unable to take an objective and get constantly rolled by a zerg five times our group size. I would love to see more of my guild out there more often because they do enjoy it but not under these conditions. I have zero idea as to how Anet is coming up with these links and matchups because i can tell you as most WvWers could that play 30 to 40 hours a week in there, these are the most unbalanced matches to date.

So here is my potential solution for this. Anet, take a clue from Funcom’s The Secret World. They had the same issue. They resolved it by placing team caps in the instance. No one team was more than 10 bigger than the smallest of the three alliances. This really balanced things out. Yes the larger servers who have three fifty man zergs running would potentially have queues to sit in BUT if you are still allowing server transfers, maybe it will drive them to the lower populated servers and help even the numbers a bit.

Lion, I like your suggestions for the teams. Maybe each color could have a catchy alliance name rather than the biggest server name. Also love the reward suggestion and agree about the amount of loot to inventory space issue. i am constantly telling my guildies i have too much loot lol!

Anywho, i hope this thread gets some of the right attention. WvW is broken mainly in the area of population groupings and i am playing a bit more of other games to ease my frustration.

Rollback and the Time-Space Continuum

Now, I know a lot of people are asking for something for compensation because of the rollback. I have a different suggestion on what could be done. Make a reason why it happened in game, it can be whatever reasoning you want. However, I have a suggestion.

It’s obvious that something to do with rolling back time should be connected with time travel and whatnot. Not to mention that replaying season 1 has been asked for many times.. So some Asura (or someone tinkering with Asuran inventions) is doing research on what happened in the past and messing with time ’caused yesterdays issues. Now it may be awhile for this individual to actually allow you to come with them to replay history

So there were about twenty or so releases for season 1, and not counting repeated (SAB, Wintersday, Halloween, Queen’s Jubilee) or permanent additions (Tequatl, Fractured) there are 17 releases, which easily can fit into a yearly schedule of two weeks each with plenty of time for holidays and whatnot.

Here is my suggested Calender in order of releases:

Flame and Frost – May 22 – June 5
The Secret of Southsun – June 5 – June 18
Last Stand at Southsun – June 19 – July 2

Primarily, people just want two things, to be admitted to that they were wronged (even if they really weren’t and were unavailable to play the entire time the game was down) and to get something in return for it. This something isn’t required to be something of value, but just something. And as they say, it is the thought that counts when giving a gift, so something like this would be much better than a gift of dye packs or something else that more or less seem like a fruit basket type of gift, that said, a title and a skin or two would also work if enough work was put into tying it with the rollback, though then we are getting back into the problem with material gifts.

And before someone says something, I know that they can’t just reload the patches with those updates in them since there is so much more, and same with some of the maps that have changed, and that even if they could it would still take some time to code irregardless.

We had 4 years of mainly uptime with 2 intermissions,
Most games go offline for a couple of hourse weekly, biweekly or monthly.

I guess you have gotten spoiled, by having this amount of luxury and padding here at A-Net

I agree this doesn’t cover bugs and the occasional disabled event, but still bugs and temp diables happen at any other company.

I use a shield … and if other people started, they would know how good it is as well. It is, in fact, a great source of indirect buffs to your damage (through traits) Camping torch is crap unless you have a burning build and the Focus 5 CD is unbearable.

If the DH is a nub stomper and the nightmare of every single cub who just picked up sPVP, scrappers are the problems of upper SPVP.

It is hilarious how no one complains about them while the forums are flooded with nerf DH/Rev Posts

The amount of sustain, damage, and mitigation this class has is ridiculous.

Its the only class with near 100% stability.

The class is virtually unkillable in 1v1 or 2v2 settings. It has a safe stomp as well as complete invulnerability both passively and on demand, which combined with high sustain means that it cannot die to burst, or sustained DPS>

I do not understand how this class has been flying under the radar for this long. The moment you see 2 scrappers on the enemy team you know you are in for a rough ride. They completely and utterly shame guards/revs/warriors and pretty much any other meta classes.

You cannot honestly tell me this class is balanced right now. If anything, they need another nerf to sustain, OR a nerf to their damage.

Reapers absolutely have too much corruption. But this is a problem overall with the game. Too much of something given to certain specs. Reapers have too much boon corruption, Berserkers have too much resistance, Daredevils have too many evades, Chronomancers have too many illusions, Druids have too much pet damage, etc.

The problem right now though with Reapers is that while they have too much condition damage and corruption, they really lack in sustain. Literally their only sustain are two dodges, with no access to vigor. They can choose protection boon skills (Spectral Armor), a teleport (Flesh Wurm), “Rise” and other skills that can help them survive, but it’s not enough. With all other professions having too much offence, Reapers die extremely easily unless you can position yourself perfectly and kite well. Have you ever noticed that the best professions every season are the ones who can sustain themselves against the insane offensive pressure? With too much offence, you need too much defence to survive. If excessive damage was reduced, excessive sustain would also need to be reduced to maintain balance. But that’s not the case. Sure there’s technically a balance, but it’s not a good balance. Pre June 2015, balance was better. It was a “good” balance you could say.

If they want to make Reaper’s balanced, they need to reduce the excessive offence in the game, and also reduce the excessive defence at the same time. But in the case of Reapers, they only need an offence reduction, not a defence reduction. Reapers are supposed to be the attrition profession. They should live a long time, but not do as much damage as others.

So don’t fret if you can’t beat Reapers 1v1. That’s where they thrive because their attrition is maximized, but in a teamfight, it’s difficult for a reaper to escape, so focus them. As long as they’re focused, it’ll be nearly impossible for them to corrupt your boons.

In 1v1s, block shroud 4, dodge shroud 5, and stun them when they don’t have stability and when you want to burst. You’ll probably be hit by their Marks. Don’t worry about that. They all have the same animation, but they often use the fear Mark first and then the chill one. So if they switch to staff and you can see a staff cast, it’s probably fear. Berserker stance is best used when you want to put high pressure on them. They have few ways of getting away from you since they can’t apply movement conditions to you. They have a passive trait that applies Spectral Armor at 50% hp. Stop attacking them when you see that so they don’t get as much shroud. Note that you cannot block Marks and the Warhorn daze. They might use Shroud 2 just to get away from you. If they do and you can’t get back onto them, use LoS. You might still get hit by Marks, but they can’t use anything else from that far. The main idea is to constantly apply pressure, dodge the right skills and hit with burst skills to cleanse conditions and maintain Adrenal Health. If you do that, you might out attrition them!

One last thing, if you’re running the Diviner’s/Seeker’s, good luck! You can stay on them more, but you’ll always have slow and chill on you.

Our boon corruption is at good in a fight for like 2-3 secs, before enemies will be full with boons for other classes.

What are you doing in terms of compensation for this change? I mean, will dailies that were cleared during this period be automatically cleared, or will we just miss out on that daily progression entirely? Will we get our loot compensated somehow? I mean, usually when a game takes things away from players that they have earned, they give something back as fair compensation.
