Ranger balance: buff -> QQ -> nerf?

I will also note that the new gm, predators onslaugh, is not a 8% increase as some see it due to twisted maths, its is 15% increase. Here to explain why:
pet + ranger = 100%.
Pet =~30%.
Ranger = ~70%.
If pet is raised by 5% then new total damage is ~35% + ~70%. = 105% of normal dps
If ranger is raised by 10% then new total damage is ~30% + ~80% = 110% of normal dps
If ranger and pet is raised by 10% and 5% respectively then new total damage is 115% of normal dps.

That’s not how percentages work.

If pet damage is 30% of the ranger’s total, then a 5% increase is 1.05*30% = 31.5%.
If ranger damage is 70% of the total, then a 10% increase is 1.1*70% = 77%

31.5% + 77% = 108.5% of non-PO damage.

So how much are people willing to bet that when the balance patch goes live other professions are going to QQ like mad about Rangers until they force the devs to nerf or remove the buffs?

Like a jealous sibling on christmas day…. “No mummy if I can’t have it then he can’t either!”

I say….nope. Look at some of the changes, and see what they really mean.

Rapid fire for example. It shoots twice as fast now, and it appears like we have a burst skill, but, it just makes it much easier to reflect all damage back to source. Its also easier to dodge more of the attacks now than before. It will still be a hard hitting skill if timed right (and should pretty much down anything if you catch them off guard). The problem is that a lot of Rangers don’t know when to stop attacking at range, and don’t realize that a majority of the damage they just took was because of reflected arrows.

It looks like a buff to some people. To everyone else who took two seconds to think about it instead of “OMG, Ranger BUFF!!!!!”, its not really a big change at all.

I honestly never understood the resistance to change for this weapon. You shouldn’t need a ‘work around’ to use the primary attack of a weapon regardless of how cool the animation is. Even with auto cast turned off, the skill is still highly frustrating and the locking mechanic isn’t something any other class has or needs for their weapon.

Pet's, a in-depth discussion

A list of some things that should be changed with pets:

Since Ranger’s can’t manually res pets I think the dead pet CD should be lowered to like 30s.

Ranger’s pet defenses should also scale like PVE champs/gain defiance when in the presence of more than 5 enemy players, for WvW zerging. Heck, Anet should just make a pet wxp traitline that implements this (Ranger isn’t the only one that can have a pet/summon/etc).

Pet return command should instantly swap your pet to you, with a short 5s CD.

Pet leash nerf should be reverted for WvW/PvE.

Ranger should give up less of his own DPS for the pets, which thanks to nerfs dont even do as much damage as once did.

Pet F2’s need rework, such as boar foraging (should display a telegraph on the pet and give you the bundle without needing to pick it up).

Pet F2’s that aoe buff shouldn’t automatically send your pet to a target. Im some cases for some reason the pet needs to get into range of the enemy to buff you?(Im not sure if this has been fixed)

The 5pt trait in BM should be scrapped, and replaced with “Dodging gives your pet Aegis, 5scd”. Most of the other BM traits need interesting reworks/buffs/fixes.

When the concept of a class is “being stronger than other classes”, you can’t just assume that is the concept for another class as well! It’s illogical to try and make all classes equally powerful and enjoyable.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rush

A long time ago the Elementalist’s Ride the Lightning was nerfed due to the huge mobility aspect of it. The cool down is now double of what it was unless you hit a target. Now Warrior’s have the best mobility, if not close to it. They can Whirlwind, Rush, and keep up perma swiftness.

Rush is essentially the same skill as Ride the Lightning except with a different skin/animation a little difference on damage. Either RtL needs to be reverted, which probably won’t happen as it has been brought up a thousand times, or Rush needs to get the same treatment. I’m late to this but it’s pretty ridiculous how alike these skills are yet how differently ANet has treated them and their respective professions. I’m sure this has been brought up but the search function on this forum hasn’t worked in a long time for me.

The CD should be changed to be the same as RtL, 40 seconds, unless a target is hit. *Alternatively do as Cufufalating says below and make it require a target. Greatsword already has a very good mobility skill otherwise for escaping.

I’ve mained Ele since headstart, my second character was a Warrior and since I’ve gotten each profession to 80 and play them all equally now. I’m not trying to completely nerf Warrior, and I’m sure this won’t hurt them as bad as RtL nerf hurt the Ele, but it’s hard to deny it excels pretty much everywhere in game.

*Fixed an error on my part and changed the alternative to what Cufulating mentioned.

How many times have you been on a zerg fight or just a regular fight and cannot find the kitten cursor because of all the fancy animations and bling-bling animations and brightly things going on on the screen?

You move and move the mouse just to see if you can locate it on the screen but you fail to locate it?

Anyone hate this?

Side note:

Also add an option where we can disable all the skill description when you put the mouse on top of the skills. It is annoying that they pop up like spam on a web browser.

So the females have big breasts, just like the males have well formed bodies with muscles of steel. Aaand? Who cares, its a video game

The statement that all armor in this game for females is skimpy is simply not true.
Many armors are just different because they are designed to fit the corresponding body.
Why force equalisation where it doesnt make sense. They have way more important things to spend their development time on, the game is doing already very fine in that regard.

The player character (PC) hasn’t had new voice recorded since the game launched, so you’ll only hear your character speak in the following circumstances: conditional chatter, in cinematic conversations in the Personal Story, and in painterly “full” cinematics. We retired cinematic conversations with the Living World, so right now the PC can only “talk” through unvoiced dialog trees.

Hey Bobby, just wanted to give my 2 cents. I just came back from a about 7 month break of playing GW2. I stopped mostly due to time reasons and to play other games, yet also because I was unhappy with the Living story. For once I didn’t like the character of Scarlet, but that’s another thing. The other reason is, that I didn’t feel appreciated as a player by the NPCs. Sounds weird, however I am mostly an old school RPG player. I grew up with Baldur’s Gate and Elder Scrolls, games that always managed to give the right amount of praise to my character.
Now I don’t want to sound like a spoiled brat, especially since GW2 probably does it better than most other MMORPGs (though I don’t have played too much of them, I’m generally not a fan of the genre), yet I still can’t help myself feeling shunned. It’s not just the lack of dialog, I understand the limitations, it’s more than that for example that there is no mention of my GW1 character that I put so much time into. I know, I know, not everyone has played GW1, but there still could be references to the “Heroes of Ascalon” or whatever. While I’m aware you are not responsible for this, I feel the need to throw this in. When I read Ghosts of Ascalon and the characters started to tell each other stories about heroes of their people, my stomach started tingling. Could this be the moment my deeds, even obscured behind the title “Heroes of Ascalon” are put to print. And then all the talked about was Gwen… I personally always disliked Gwen, but when they pretty much said that Gwen is the greatest hero of humanity or at least Ascalon (it was something along those lines) there was a split second when I wanted to rip the book to shreds. I calmed myself with the thought that they probably didn’t want to confuse readers and that I will get my appreciation, when the game is released via the Hall of Monuments. Too bad the HoM was disappointing too, a ruin with 3-4 Ghosts in it, only one talking about some heroes of the past.

But ok this was GW1, now it’s GW2. My old toons will always be remembered by me, this game is for my new heroes to shine. And yet they didn’t, instead the personal story got hijacked halfway through, first by the order mentors (at least they were likable) and then by Trahearne. Why do you keep doing this Anet? Why do NPCs fill the spotlight? Again, I know for a consistent story, there need to be consistent characters that are the same for everyone. That’s why Kormir became a god and I’m one of the people who does not mind that at all. I like Kormir! She was a well written, well acted and suitable character. Trahearne is not. This is what makes the spotlight theft even worse. I hoped the Living story would change that, yet again the focus is on NPCs while I’m playing the part of the delivery boy.

Sorry I had to rant there, I needed to get this off my chest. GW2 is a MMO, so I guess I can’t expect traditional RPG stroytelling. I’m not even sure how you can fix this in the future, all I can give as constructive feedback is this idea: You could place plaques (like the Marriner plaques) in areas that had story importance in GW1. So players who never played the first one can catch up with it’s story and lore without having to buy it while old players feel a little bit more appreciated. Something like “Abaddon’s Mouth: Here the mighty Heroes of Ascalon faced Khilborn, the Orrian Lich and his army of titans.”

I hope this didn’t sound like I just wanted my ego to be stroked. I just want to feel like the hero and not the sidekick.

You don’t win friends with salad! Sorry I just got caught up in the rhythm.

Enough of your GMPC please.

Ms. McCoy, there is something in your posts which I feel needs to be addressed.

The whole “Commander” topic is another discussion entirely.

Bottom line is that, at the beginning of the Pact (almost 2 years ago in-game time), you were “The Commander.” After Zhaitan was killed, the Pact continued on and you went off into the world to do stuff. At that point, other commanders were brought on, and you become “A Commander.”

This never happened.

You never told that story. You did not write those scenes. Nowhere in the entire game of Guild Wars 2 does this ever take place, and therefore it is not the story you told.

This has happened repeatedly throughout Season 1, you refer to events and information that never actually transpire in the game. There are forum posts that detail how the Flame Legion were just using Scarlet to get their way, but there is no evidence for this in the game. Other posts describe how the dredge were inspired by multiple victories and motivated to keep serving as shock troops, but there isn’t a single NPC who says anything remotely justifying this. The krait were described as bitter and resentful after the Tower fell and struck LA in pursuit of vengeance, but there isn’t a single scene where that idea is conveyed.

If it isn’t in the game, it doesn’t exist. If it never makes it from your head to the page, it is never written.

The storyteller is responsible for conveying the entire narrative, and any holes in the tapestry are theirs to mend. It does not matter if you have the answers. It does not matter if you have it all properly arranged in your mind. It does not matter that you are a smart and clever thinker. All that matters is what you actually create in your medium. Art is judged by its results, not its intentions.

We never left the Pact. Anyone can claim we left to do our own thing, but there isn’t a single scene in the story that actually demonstrates this. It’s like leaving a gap between Chapter 8 and Chapter 10 and giving a brief synopsis of what was supposed to happen. That’s not storytelling, that’s telling that there should have been a story. And it’s all well and good to claim that there were priorities and time constraints, but maybe we didn’t need one or two of the hundred of lines of Scarlet’s “Mwahahahaha, I’m evil” rants or a scene or two of Marjory and Kasmeer making kissy faces, or a random interlude of Braham being a stereotypical moron. Maybe one of those scenes could have been spent actually moving the plot for the Player Characters.

You cannot ask us to pretend that you wrote the missing chapter of your novel. If it isn’t in the game, it does not exist. If it never happened in game, it did not happen.

Warrior's Mobility as heavy armor class....

in Profession Balance

It seems reasonable for rush to receive the same treatment as RTL.

nope. not reasonable at all.
not even close.

Rush
- runs 1200 forward physically
- runs to target within 1200 range
- slowed by crippled, chilled
- stopped by immobilize and various control effects

Ride the Lightning
- 2 seconds of ride the lightning transform effect
- move 600 units per second
- effect only ends if knocked down / burst down or reached target early

rush can be very easily countered while ride the lightning is not.

Rush is effected by swiftness, meaning that it can travel further than 1200. Warriors also have considerable access to passive reduction to soft CC.

RTL is stopped by immoblize, in addition to hard CC, in which case it becomes a 2s self stun. Aside from cripple and chill, during the animation the ele has to suffer any negative effects already applied to them with no access to their skills or any way to cancel the ability. Something no warrior has to deal with for the duration of rush. The “transform” aspect of the skill is a negative is most situations, rather than a positive.

/s

What’s the issue? Surely if warriors are using the skill to engage targets and not to flee then there will be no problems what so ever! It will be the same as before!

Ranger is probably the weakest class for WvW at the moment. That said, I love playing my ranger in WvW. Playing Ranger in WvW is “hard mode”. Here are my comments on your weapon choices: sword is the only weapon that does enough damage to come close to competing with other classes in terms of damage output (probably still not close enough to bother) but all the dancing about makes it too difficult for me to use in WvW. Mobility is important in WvW and your weapon choices give you none. IMHO, Signet of the Hunt does not give enough mobility on its own. Warhorn does give you a blast, swiftness, fury and might and in WvW and I find it much more useful than dagger. But in fact, perma-swiftness is not enough to keep up with the groups I run with. GS damage is less than Sword, but it gives you a leap with skill 3, a block with skill 4 and a CC with skill 5. By the way, using LB skill 4 at the wrong time will make everybody else hate you.

So when I think of what to bring to WvW is

  1. How can I support my group (Warhorn blast, Healing Spring, Spotter, Frost Spirit, etc.)
  2. Mobility and mobility denial (GS, Warhorn, Muddy Terrain, RaO, Entangle, Lightening Reflexes, etc.)
  3. CC (GS, LB 4 at the right moment like when someone needs a nudge off a cliff.)
  4. Damage (jk, everybody I know laughs at the Ranger’s ability to do damage).
  5. Equipping pets that will stay alive and do something marginally useful with F2. (jk, even bears insta-melt in most large group encounters my groups go through).

Most importantly, if you find a skilled group that will put up with a Ranger, don’t be a jerk. Because right now Warriors, Guardians, Mesmers, Elementalists, and Thieves all have rolls that cannot be replaced. Rangers can argue the point but don’t bother. Nobody is going to listen.

P.S. Skilled groups will believe you should pop your invulnerability at the right time. The only way I know how to do this on a Ranger is by giving up both a grandmaster trait and a utility slot. I don’t bother.

P.P.S. Don’t die and rally anyone.

Like I said before, Ranger in WvW is hard mode.

Ok, heres my question as it was brought up that there is an endgame treadmill. Why do you NEED ascended armor???

Because not having Best in Slot gear seriously diminishes my enjoyment of the game. And yes, pre-release statements of the developers strongly suggested that grinding for best stat gear will not be a problem i will run into GW2. It was one of the reasons i bought this game in the first place.
Do i need it? No, not really (even though stat advantage full ascended gear set offrs is not so insignificant as you seem to believe) – but then i don’t need to play this game either.

“The mistake you’re making is that it’s your personal feeling towards this game is purely aesthetic after you ate up all the content.”
…..
“As you can see, aesthetics is very important for a lot of players.”

You do realize you’re arguing yourself, right?

It’s not just important to a lot of players. It is the only thing to strive for at “end game” in GW2. The Living Stories are hardly what I would (and a great deal of other players) would consider “content”. Basically, at this point, GW2 has become a vicious recycling motion of trying to make money off the gemstore with little in the way of “content” or any addition thereof.

You can argue this all you want but when the content being released is completed within a few hours, tops, one has to take a step back and ask themselves what exactly are they logging in for. You’re playing a game to spend money on “skins”. That’s all. There are no new dungeons, no new zones to do things of any importance to your character or over all lore and as we have admitted to in the other thread, there is no gear treadmill. So what are you playing GW2 for? To pay to look pretty?

Not exactly. There are a LOT of players who view aesthetics to be important. But just because a lot of people may feel this way, doesn’t mean it’s the only thing in the game to do. They can do Dungeons, Fractals, SPvP, WvW, and even new LS content.

Here’s where you need to understand the businessman’s perspective. Because Anet knows a lot of players like to look good, they put really nice looking skins in the Gem Store. I rarely buy armor sets, but when the Assassin one came out, I knew that I just had to have it. Anet/NCSoft profits off of my personal desire to look like an awesome ninja. If they sold a consumable that allowed me to gender-swap the clothes my male norn wears, I’d buy that too. If they sold me exclusive access to Cantha, I would drop hundreds of dollars for that.

Anyways, there are players who feel like this game is a “play to look pretty”. I’m one of them, and my spending behaviors dictate that I’ll drop real money for fancy virtual skins.

When are we going to start seeing the money made from selling stuff in the gemstore put back into the game? When sub based games make their money, they eventually put that money back into the game by creating meaningful content. When is Anet going to start doing this with their gemstore profits? You seem to have all the answers penguin. Answer that question.

You keep talking about business this and business that. Look at the forums, my friend. People are getting sick of this business of gemstore profits and nothing going back into the game. Which business tactic is that modeled after?

I’m just going with the flow.
Let’s make it “Casual Friday” errday.

who is Account Bound crafting protecting?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

Why are so many crafting items Account Bound? In what way do these restrictions on, say, food protect the economy? Take Prickly Pear Stuffed Nopale, for example. It gives a boost to Power and Condition Duration and it lasts 30 minute. That’s hardly game-breaking stuff. But it’s Account Bound. Why?

There are some people who hate crafting, and never will craft, who might be happy to pay someone else to make this for them. There other people who have no desire to use this food but will buy the recipe anyway because they’re completionists. So how would the latter selling to the former hurt the game’s economy in any way?

I mean, I can understand putting Account Bound limitations on certain powerful or exceptionally desired items that you want to use as long term goals. But putting those restrictions on such mundane things as run-of-the-mill consumables doesn’t make any sense to me. It seems to me you’d want people who enjoy crafting to make money selling items to those who don’t.
