She mentions that “some years ago” she “came into possession” of an Orrian scepter of great power, and that she’s “spent many years studying it.” Frustratingly vague, but I’d say it sounds like she still had it, even though she didn’t bring it with her. (At the time, she was protecting/advising the new Krytan leader as he lay siege to Lion’s Arch.) It doesn’t seem to be common knowledge with the characters- none of them seem to realize this scepter in particular is different from any other, and the rumors about Livia’s longevity- that is common knowledge at the time- are along the lines of “she sold her soul to become a lich” and “she uses the blood of prisoners to give herself eternal youth and beauty.”
But back to motivations, it seems Scarlet’s angle in the Aetherblade mess was to put a captain on the council that’d be in their pocket… I could picture Livia doing that. But what possible advantage would she have in the Molten Alliance?

We know that Lazarus was alive as of 1078, which was 248 years before GW2 present-day. Even assuming Lazarus didn’t die of violence, old age could well have done him in- there is NOTHING to indicate mursaat live for multiple centuries. His threat may well have been empty, or his revenge could’ve been implemented beyond his own death.

That’s not as far-fetched as you might think. As of 1256, a mere seventy years before GW2 present day, Livia was still alive and well. She was also still a member of the Shining Blade guarding the royal family. What the motive be? What reason would she have to aid parties hostile to humanity’s allies?

Somewhere in between, I would think. We don’t have much to go on, but there was one interview, I don’t remember the specifics, that said that guardians become guardians because of their faith in (insert relevant cultural aspect) or their desire to protect their comrades. Combine that with the way every profession in GW1 seemed to have a “type” and it seems to indicate that magic of a certain school is accessed through a personality trait or mental facet. For instance, necromancers seem associated with a fascination with death. Some revere it, some respect it, others glory in it, and some are just curious, but the allure is always there.

The general consensus, I think, is that magic is like any art. You can be trained in it, be taught what to do with it, and almost always will benefit from the tutelage of a more experienced mentor, but there’s a certain something that comes of having an innate knack for it, and some prodigies take to it so intuitively they need no training at all.

As the others have noted, none of this is confirmed, but my brother and I have noted that there seemed to be a pattern to the blast. As Konig already stated, the two that left the Ring of Fire are roughly equidistant, and all three known stones traveled at ninety degree angles, with one heading straight up. If this pattern holds for the other two, then they would both be underwater, with one south and a bit west of Orr and the other a ways south of the Tarnished Coast beyond the western edge of the map.

Elder races, will we be seeing them?

Aaron Ansari.1604

It is very nearly a given that we will find out what happened to the Forgotten when the Crystal Desert is opened to us, and unless they were wiped out or somehow got mixed up in whatever the Six are doing, that will entail meeting them. They are simply too large a portion of that region’s story for it to be otherwise. As to the others, we know of one Mursaat that survived GW1. I’m not holding my breath for a reappearance of Lazarus- last we saw, his power was twisted upon itself, and we have no indication that Mursaat can live for hundreds of years- but there could very well be other survivors, perhaps enough to maintain a small population into GW2. Iirc, there was a line in one of the human storylines that indicates the Shining Blade believe the mursaat still exist. If that is the case, I expect we’ll learn about them during the storyline that opens Fort Vandal. The Seers… it pains me to say this, as I find them to be the most fascinating among the elder races, but I do not believe that they will be putting in an appearance. It can easily be argued that only one was around in GW1, and it can just as easily be argued that that one was dead before GW1 finished.

“The origin of the Eye of the North is so ancient it has been lost to even the wisest skaald…” So it’s definitely old. And it wasn’t exactly intact in Guild Wars 1. The top of the tower wkittentered.

My research on the subject is in no way as extensive as some on this forum, but to me, we have two major architectural indications of built the Eye of the North. First is the Honor monument, which is a statue left behind by the original occupants, and slightly reminiscent of both the seers and mursaat. The other is the eagle bust used extensively throughout the Eye of the North, and found on a much smaller scale in the original Rata Sum and, iirc, some Depths of Tyria ruins.

Comparing that with the 8 week figure from LA to Kaineng, and using the world map lifted from the Chantry of Secrets, that would place it either just north of the Grove or along Sparkfly Fen. Given that it was attacked by the Risen, I’m in favor of the later.

What does Jormag do with females?

in Lore

Posted by: Aaron Ansari.1604

Aaron Ansari.1604

There is nothing that indicates they felt anything different, again quite the contrary, nor that Svanir’s susceptibility was due to being male. Svanir and Jora were different people, with many subtle factors playing into their identity. Male and female was by no stretch of the imagination the only relevant one. Nor can Svanir’s actions portray all norn- he is one man, and one man does not make a trend. The reason female norn don’t flock to Jormag’s banners is because Jormag’s representatives in norn territories are misogynists. The Sons can more easily tempt male norn, because the Sons don’t even try to tempt females. We have absolutely no reason to believe there’s anything deeper than that.

It is almost certain that Jormag’s tooth does not have the power to corrupt. The only indication we have that Elder Dragon body parts can corrupt is the sword in the Priory storyline, which A.) was made of blood, which in Guild Wars is innately magically potent, and B.) was tampered with in gods know what ways to make it into a sword. As for why Jormag didn’t corrupt him in the fight, we’re not so sure, but he did have help from the Spirits of the Wild. Perhaps we’ll learn in Sea of Sorrows (small chance, I know, but a man can hope.)

No, it’s from the Edge of Destiny novel. The exact quote: “The men return… as frozen icebrood. The women return… not at all.” And it is also true that we see no female norn icebrood, save perhaps the ones in such an advanced state of corruption that gender is no longer identifiable.

As to what happens to them, well, you have the right of it: we have no idea. We know for a fact that female kodan and, iirc, quaggans can be corrupted, we know we do not see corrupted female norn, and that’s more or less it. In a earlier thread on this topic that the crap search function can’t find, I know it was suggested that the female icebrood might be held back to avoid upsetting the Sons of Svanir, but I personally am not well enough versed in the topic to hold an informed opinion.

About Lion's Arch and Pirates

in Lore

Posted by: Aaron Ansari.1604

Aaron Ansari.1604

I’ve spent some time in-game doing research on the topic. Most of what I found backs what I’ve already said, so I won’t repeat those parts, but there were some tidbits of interest. Unfortunately, the ambient dialogues on the docks of Lion’s Arch and Rata Sum are extremely lacking, both in terms of quantity and information provided. Nonetheless, there were a couple gems.

First, a dialogue on the smaller set of Lion’s Arch docks tells the tale of a passenger ship that was wrecked by pirates. The pirate’s dredged up the passengers belongings, and then brought them into the city to sell. This, combined with the pirates in LA specifically identified as Covington Pirates or Cutthroat Pirates, shows that the Captain’s Council does tolerate hostile crews within city limits- or perhaps more accurately, turns a blind eye on them.

As for the relationship between Lionguard and pirates, it doesn’t seem to be as hostile as I had supposed. A pirate-turned-fence in the Undermarket suggests that the Lionguard can bought off to look the other way. In the Bloodtide Coast, the garrison of a haven sits on their hands and do nothing when a caravan is attacked right outside their walls. Indeed, aside from the campaign against Taida Covington, I could find no example of the Lionguard actively attempting to halt pirate activity, in or out of the city.

Due to this, I see no evidence myself that Lion’s Arch employs privateers, under the name of pirate or otherwise. There are no hostile nations to the city that sail the sea. In the precious few naval operations we see the city undertake, the forces were Lionguard. And with evidence that true swashbuckling pillaging pirates within the city, no other explanation is needed for the NPCs labeled so.

To the point of naval commerce, I found one truly excellent dialogue. Nossi, an asura on the end of Dawnside Quay who regrettably lacks a wiki page, says that shipping brings the asura “everything we can’t or don’t bother to create here in Rata Sum- natural resources and foreign goods.” Shipping, not their gate network, provides the asura their trade with the other races. That makes at least one major shipping lane between Rata Sum and Lion’s Arch. The same asura also confirms that Rata Sum freely allows pirates to dock and sell their ill-gotten loot, describing it as a “win-win arrangement.” Their only caveat is that the pirates must behave themselves while moored.
