They are already intrusive enough into other’s gameplay…

/endsnip

I am curious. How do they “intrude” on your gameplay? They are simply graphic pets that don’t affect the game in any way except to make people happy by having one (or more.)

If they gave buffs, take loot, kill your mobs (a la Ranger Pets) or anything else directly affecting the game itself, then I would agree, but right now all they are is eye candy to those who like them.

Off topic and for the record: I don’t mind having to jump through a minipet following someone around in a jumping puzzle, but I can’t see kitten through a ranger pet. Please put them away until you’re actually fighting something? please? pretty please?

For the reason you listed specifically, it’s a distraction and annoyance more often than me seeing one and saying “Oh that’s a cool mini”. It’s usually "Grrr I can’t see this NPC through this pet/mini/what have you.

I like the idea of putting away ranger pets until in combat though, would solve a lot of issues with them being in the way.

There are a lot of great things about the game. It’s why I play it.

But it’s largely getting over shadowed for me these days by a lack of communication with and respect for the player base that plays the game and spends money in the store.

To me, it’s a bit like AT&T when they were the only ones that had the iPhone. The things you list, and other things I can think of? That’s the iPhone.

Support telling you to post in forums to have your questions answered, then asking those questions in the forum and having them completely ignored and dismissed. Collaboration? I’d look to the folks working Marvel Heroes for a much better example of how to collaborate with your community. All that is AT&T.

So yes, I agree. They have an iPhone.

But all the rest is AT&T.

I’d ‘love’ for them to start communicating better and provide a way to just answer simple questions that deserve answers. They did a great job with listing out the reasoning behind all the class changes and why. That’s great! We can read what they are thinking, and make a decision about whether we believe in those decisions or not, and continue to play the game or not, depending on how our own needs and desires align with theirs.

But then there’s something like the human female running animation.

Why was that changed? Where are the patch notes? Where is the statement (like all those class changes) explaining why, after 14 months or so, they felt it had to be changed? Was it the cause of a bug that threatened the in game economy? Perhaps it affected WvW balance? What is your philosophy as to why ‘that’ changed, so we can make an informed decision about how to proceed?

A well formulated post with valid points. A good read. +1

Not many are saying the game is terrible but critique comes when it’s deserved. The LS and some of the cash grab things come to mind with some people. Just because people point these out does not mean they don’t enjoy the game.

Telling people to leave if they don’t like it – not the best sales strategy.

I will have to agree with this as well. I feel like this is the reason WoW has lost half its sub base in a year. I feel like it is what happened to Rift, which I loved, but they didn’t listen to their players and the game suffered for it. To the point where it went F2P.

New CDI?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aeonblade.8709

Chris, copying this over from an old CDI thread in case you missed it. Given the OPs question it seemed relevant.

I dont know if this is the right place to post this but its the best I could find, which in itself is relevant to the suggestion I would like to make.

It seems that CDI does not have a home, so to speak, but is spread out across the various forums the different threads are related to. This makes sense, but for someone who doesn’t visit the forums everyday its quite difficult and time consuming to find where the various threads are.

I would suggest a stickied post in the suggestions forum listing all the CDI threads, current and completed, in chronological order and with a short paragraph describing the purpose and contents of each.

This would allow participants very convenient access to any topic they might want to contribute too or read up on without requiring you to move any existing threads or reorganize anything else on the forums. It might also help people to grasp the big picture of CDI, which might help them appreciate what you are trying to achieve with it, something that is hard to see if you only see one or two threads every now and then.

This is a good idea.

Guys, asking for them to destroy content they have already made to be released isn’t going to happen anyway.

Most people, and almost all companies, can never admit they’ve made a mistake.

Better companies design their workflow in such a way that they do not make lasting commitments to ideas that can fail, have ways to recycle abandoned content, or will actually do away with previous work if it proves disastrous in practice. It’s all part of good game design.

While I agree with this statement, I don’t see ANet being one of the companies who adjusts the work flow.

Guys, asking for them to destroy content they have already made to be released isn’t going to happen anyway. What we are going to have to do, is grit our teeth, deal with the dime store kindergarten bully villain type story for 4 more updates, then hope they continue with real updates in the following months after.

Some people really DO like the dime store villain I have heard this story a million times type story. I’m positive it’s less than the people who dislike bland stories, but we have no way to prove that other than our opinions.

They aren’t going to throw work out they have already done. It’s silly to ask. Just grin and bear the terrible story line until we can give them another chance.

I have the AoE auto-loot feature assigned to my “L” key (for Loot). The poor mini would have an aneurysm trying to be faster than I can hit “L”. Although the idea isn’t bad, it really doesn’t add anything of value here.

Now if minipets didn’t get dumped into the collection tabs when you hit “Deposit all collectibles”, that would be wonderful!

Agreed! I see that side of it now as well. The deposit all collectibles is actually the only reason I don’t let my mini priest out, I keep dang depositing him :P He’s the only mini I have that I really like anyway.

While that would be cool, do we really want thousands of people running around with their mini’s out? They are already intrusive enough into other’s gameplay, I don’t think making them a requirement helps their case.

To each their own, a special, really hard to get mini that I don’t see everyday that grabs loot, sure. I just don’t want to be forced to collect minis. Something like this would make me feel forced to have a mini out at all times, which I do not want to do personally.

Some of these are good valid points others…Not so much. The Transmutation stone thing is actually a hinderance imo, it’s a very badly designed cash grab feature as every MMO that has come out in the last 5 years has wardrobe slots that work way better than those stupid stones. Server wide auction house? Destroyed the economy. Downed state? Still cripples PvP.

Others are good valid points as I said, such as Dungeons with multiple paths and Dye variety as well as no quest hubs. All very nice features. You just have to take the good with the bad, roll with what worked, and keep playing if you are having fun

If YOU could change 7 things about GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Aeonblade.8709

1. All classes get all weapons.
2. Levels mean something. Being level 80 makes your character more powerful than a level 20 in the same zone.
3. Actual gear progression that is meaningful, but not the focus of the game.
4. World events rewarding more items and “hot zones” everyday for bonus items from completing champion events in these zones. This makes people use more than just Queensdale to champ train.
5. Add 3 or 4 more classes.
6. Improve conditions/rework the entire condition system to be useful in PvE, and less powerful in WvW.
7. Increases the number of skills each class gets at least 3 fold.

The Death of PvE?

This game can be considered casual because it has no real goals…

But if you consider the harder things to acquire as end game, this game is far from being casual friendly and its actually one of the most hardcore/grindfest games currently online. Few games demand as many hours online dedicated entirely to farming like GW2,… again, if you are looking for the hard-to-get shinnies.

Pretty much this. It is one of the most casual games, but at the same time if you are serious at all about your character and having the best shinies, it reminds me of early day Lineage 2, nothing but grind after grind.

WvW Season One Rewards Are Unacceptable

in WvW

Posted by: Aeonblade.8709

Aeonblade.8709

Finally, since “rewards” are all over this game, it begs the question, with your attitude why are you playing a reward based game? Go play chess.

wut

You said you didn’t need rewards, victory was reward enough. For the rest of us, that’s just plainly not true. MMORPG’s as a genre depend on rewards for time invested.

So as the poster said, Chess or another PvP game with no rewards would be a better fit for you

You want rewards and shiny pixels because you’ve been conditioned to wanting it. What kind of ‘rewards’ did Red Alert, Warcraft, Frogger, The Lost Vikings, Donkey Kong, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Mario 64 etc etc. give you? Hm? We played those games because they were fun – we played to win, to improve, to beat that one obstacle that required extra effort. You want rewards because you’ve been brainwashed by the modern gaming industry – by the skinner box. Easy satisfaction – just push a button, and watch how your ingame pixels become more colorful.

It’s incredibly sad to see how many people who’ve been captured by the world of vertical progression and virtual work. Games are no longer about having fun, as evident in this thread, and the way modern games are built (skins, perks, achievements, power-progression, levels, unlocks etc.). It’s easy to see why developers go down this path, but it’s getting increasingly sad to see zombies slaving away in an online world, for non-existing materialistic gain.

Dress it up however you want to, I prefer to get something for my time invested beyond just “cause it’s fun”.

I played Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye to get better at the game sure, but we were much younger than and much more easily entertained.

My favorite games, even back then, were RPG’s, where you collected gear and powers. I know it’s hard to comprehend that some people actually enjoy getting rewards for doing something, but some of us need more purpose for our time other than “just because.”

My time is more valuable, to me, than just doing things to do them.

The current LS system makes this the MOST Alt-unfriendly game I know of. Nothing is really repeatable on many alts given the time gating and account based achievement system.

One small example. In GW1 I was able to do WIK 14 times, for the same reward, on all characters. The “meta” reward was not by account, but by character. The content was/is permanent, and available to be played eventually by any new character created.

Permanent content is alt-friendly. Temporary is not, and you can’t spin it any other way.

Well said sir, I agree with this comment.

New player struggling to pick a first class

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Aeonblade.8709

Aeonblade.8709

I’m an expecting mother so the first thing I want is to be able to do things solo. I do also want to be desired and have my roles in groups. I’ve played all the classes for at least a few levels most to 10-20 and my highest a warrior to 45. Right now I’ve been bouncing between my necro, mesmer, and warrior. I love feeling like a kitten and wading into baddies in heavy armor, but something about the other two have my eye. I’d really like to pick one and push on to 80 and ejoy the end game. Wintersday looks fun I don’t want to get bored either just because I feel the need to get to end game. Thanks in advance for any insight into the manner.

This was one of the first games where I really had trouble getting into a class because of a lack of meaning to picking your class (i.e. Trinity) I have gotten all 8 to 20 before, some on more than one occasion, and I usually end up quitting them and deleting them. The only one that I or my wife has been able to level to max is Guardian. It’s fun to play. You have options. Building tanky or dps feels like it means more as a Guardian. I can actually heal others enough to make a difference in WvW.

Guardian is a good solid choice for solo, PvE, and PvP. You will always be wanted and feel like you are contributing.

And no, you can’t use high level Fractals as an argument for gearing.

Are you serious? Why not? Because it invalidates your statement? Fractals is the sole reason for Ascended armor to be honest. Limiting you to one character is by definition NOT Alt Friendly.

Because it’s an invalid argument. Fractals are elite dungeons. If you want to do the elite content, you gear yourself appropriately. If you want to be able to play the other 99% of the game, you don’t need Ascended.

Just because you can’t afford to do one dungeon, does not mean the game is alt unfriendly.

If you do WvW, full ascended is also required to play to the best of your classes capabilities. Min/Max baby, min/max

Actually, you have to be good at the game to play to the best of your class’s abilities.

All the gear in the world won’t save you from chain CC.

I didn’t say it was the only thing you needed, but if you want to be truly competitive and not just another of the herd, you need the best gear on top of personal skill imo.

Yep, I think most of us are already doing this and will continue to do so as it’s a cheaper option than even store bought space.

Agreed, I bit the bullet months ago and did the personal guild thing and it has worked out rather nice, the added benefit is that if you choose to run under that guild banner sometimes and build influence you have the added choice of dropping banners which comes in handy at times and is normally appreciated by the other players.

Blame the people who said they would pay for this feature long ago. It’s sad that people are complaining that Anet is listening to the people. If you don’t like it or think it’s overpriced then don’t buy it and thank those who do because these sales help us get more free content. I will buy just to thank them for the game and get something useful as well. Capitalism working as intended

More sales for free content…You know that makes absolutely no sense in any way shape or form. Either way you pay for the content, whether it’s $15 of gems or $15 for a subscription. At least a sub game offers you the game for your purchase, the Anet system actually milks MORE money out of most people before they realize it.

I’m not saying it’s not smart or a good move from a capitalistic standpoint, but to say any of the content is free is just ludicrous as it’s being paid for by the players either way. Most of this “new content” is gated behind gems or RNG anyway, so it’s just a poor example in my humble opinion.

Go a couple months without paying a mandatory subscription to access a game you already paid for and see what happens. Then go a couple months without buying gems in GW2.

Now, let’s call you out on what appears to be a blatant attempt to spread misinformation: Show me one piece of content that is gated behind gems.

Any skin that has been put behind a lockbox is content gated behind gems. To be fair I don’t even look at the gem store much these days, and haven’t participated in any world event since Dragon Bash. If you would like to argue the semantics of what “content” is, argue with someone else. If skins are the only progression Anet is willing to offer, that is their content in my eyes.

They may of changed their stance on this kind of stuff, but to be perfectly fair I’m much happier just getting in a few hours of WvW every week and not worrying about their next “content” cash grab.

fyi rangers are in the game

If you think that, you haven’t played one .

I’ve had a ranger main since starting GW2 and have had no issues in fights both close range and distance.

Yes, the ranger lacks in some aspects, the pet can be buggy and Anet keeps nerfing us, but we work.

I seriously don’t understand the negativity towards the ranger class. We work amazingly in PvE, PvP, and WvW.

I work fine in a dungeon (yes, other classes can be more efficient, but we do work) and can zerg in WvW with the best of the other classes and have my pet and I survive through it.

Just because you stay alive in dungeons and WvW doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be better served by a viable class. I would pick any class over ranger to add to my zerg, and that’s a problem for the class.

MMORPG aren’t that at all. “Rest of us” is smaller than you think. It would be a terrible game if we were to WvW for whatever came out of that chest.

That wasn’t the point of my post, It was to explain because he asked “What?”

What ever happened to playing a game because it’s fun? Why do games, MMO’s especially, have to have such time consuming progression mechanics? If the game had enough fun things to, there’d be absolutely no need to have porogression. Progression is just a trick used to keep you playing a game that you would otherwise stop playing.

My advise to Anet would be to scrap all progression mechanics completely and spend their time and effort on making the game too fun to stop playing. The problem is though, progression is the easy way to keep players playing and it produces the best developer effort to profit ratio. So any company would be foolish to let go of such a good earner.

Not to mention for a lot of players, myself included, progression IS the fun!

Finally, since “rewards” are all over this game, it begs the question, with your attitude why are you playing a reward based game? Go play chess.

quaint, my dear. Now please allow the adults to talk.

I agree why don’t you let them.

I <3 fanboy. Where is chum chum?

Imagine my dismay when I came back from a few months break to find all the people that used to talk down on everyone for asking for improvements to the game no longer play or post here.

Oh the irons, they are too much.

Hairstyles and Faces etc. are one of the few things I feel comfortable with spending real money for.

It takes no effort to raise item caps for collections from 250 to 1000, just a simple number change.

An artist spent time, effort, and sweat off his brow developing new hairstyles and facial features. That’s where the difference is to me, and why something like Hair is acceptable to cash lock and inventory space is not. No amount of development goes into just changing a number value.

Just for the record, changing code, even on something you deem so minor, has an associated developmental cost with it. The unlock on item use feature was added and compiled and tested.

You put more value on the artistic side of the development, which is valid a opinion, but it doesn’t mean there was no effort, work, or money invested in changing an item stack size.

Dress it up however you want, art assets take considerably more time and effort than database management.

It’s a smart decision, most players will be satisfied with one upgrade, so it’s affordable, while those, who need more than 500 stacks, also probably can afford to spend more. Love it or hate it, the pricing is perfect from marketing stand point.

The pricing is hardly perfect, but it could be worse yes.

Back before I quit for about 5 months DB had a pretty good rivalry going with FA/TC, but things quieted down while I was gone.

All in all it’s more enjoyable now and DB feels more “together” than we did back then. I still miss you TC guys though /wave

it’s cheaper to buy the gems, convert to gold.then create your own storage guild and then convert the gold into influence to create guild banks.

Yep, I think most of us are already doing this and will continue to do so as it’s a cheaper option than even store bought space.

Wow, you would think people forgot all about crafting material management in other games.

Game shipped with stack limits of 250. Its an upgrade to go from there. the people complaining about this being in the gemstore probably think the extra character slots is a bogus upgrade as well.

Well, you said it. To some people it’s gonna be bogus cashgrabbing (would never pay extra $ for char slots) to others it’s worth it. As long as it’s worth it enough to make money, opinions really don’t matter.

How can I show casuals the importance of TS?

in WvW

Posted by: Aeonblade.8709

Aeonblade.8709

To be perfectly honest, because TS offers me no more information than if I’m actually in game and playing, as a veteran player of MMO’s, I use TS less and less the older I get because it’s really not needed once you grasp the fundamentals of a game or in this case the genre.

Sometimes I do get on TS, and It does have value for sure, especially for newer players. but 9 times out of 10 there is little to no extra information and it’s a hassle to deal with people interrupting each other and breathing into their mic while they eat their hot pockets.

tl;dr TS has it’s place but I’m not gonna be on TS for every zerg fight.
