Any charr will tell you that “gods” can be killed.

in the defense of the gods, the charr have never faced a true one. Their belief that all gods can be killed most likely stems from the fact that all gods they killed were powerful beings or impersonators pretending to be gods. Remember they had a cult worshipping the titans, so thats about how little power a creature needs for the charr to think they’re gods

The Shatterer isn’t in a level 80 zone. Tequatl isn’t in a level 80 zone. The location of the lieutenant isn’t as important as how big the fight is.

aesthetically, I agree, but you can’t deny that people can faceroll tequatl and shatterer event, even after that ‘complexity’ update

Whoa. Slow down. The tool isn’t elitist (if anything, it treats everyone the same, something that observation alone cannot do). Elitists will use the tool to serve their elitist principles, sure. That’s a social issue, not a technological one.

No, he’s right. The ONLY possible reason for having a tool that rates other people is to exclude them, and that’s the very definition of elitist.

A non-elitist tool would not measure other people, except perhaps in aggregate.

ANet didn’t think this through (or, maybe they did and they’re just trying to satisfy elitists).

Anet did think it through. Only personal and group dps is allowed, or sharing of data between the dps meters. If someone doesn’t have a dps meter, it’s not allowed to give personal dps data. If someone can see your personal dps, that is not the team as a whole’s dps, report them

I checked on reddit, but there seems to be no similar topic there. I wonder if there’s a way to check if anet is aware of this problem? it’s fairly gamebreaking from my point of view. In a big battle where it’s easy to lose your cursor in the flashy discofights, your AoE’s or AoE-oriented attacks can get lost, wasted, and carefully aiming with the mouse costs valuable seconds you don’t have in raids. As a necromancer I’ve tamed myself to move to to the place where I want the corrosive poison cloud to spawn, so it won’t get wasted

Amaimon.7823

Right now Primordus is still lacking a proper luitenant. There are some that will say the Megadestroyer is his luitenant, again some will completely deny this as the megadestroyer is nothing more than another random but bigger destroyer.

Now that we’ve moved into the living story, to a point where Primordus is securing his spot at the top of the food chain, isn’t it about time we get a proper world boss for the king of destruction?

TBF, since the megadestroyer isn’t in a level 80 zone, I doesn’t feel it’s right to overhaul him to this position. I was thinking to have his champion on the Fiery Island Chain, although that might be a little too close to home. The problem with updating the Megadestroyer to this role is the same problem with the Shatterer, because it’s not in a lv80 zone, you can’t use the full potential to make a proper boss. and level 80 people will steamroll over it. A disgrace not befitting the champion of the king of the food chain.

The gliders are the new shiny. People are showing them right now but soon enough another shiny will appear and people will move on to it (and I’m sure there will be posts about how this new shiny is obnoxious in X, Y or Z way.)

My suggestion is to ignore them. In a week or two you won’t hardly see them around any more as people will switch back to old gliders once the “new glider smell” wears off this one.

tbh, I am really curious what it’s going to be.
There seems to be a running gag its going to be zone specific mounts, the Junundu Wurms, in particular, but I doubt they can sell skins on that.

Yeah, it’s a shame that there is nothing to be experienced apart from “I did all my traitlines, now I’m ready to become berserker/dragonhunter/scrapper”. One has to imagine or play it like their toon stumbles out of a burning wreckage and is so confused/desperate/whatever that they use weapons that they didn’t use before. So much wasted potential. But then again, that would have meant to put countless hours into the development of those “tutorials”.

@Xenon: I think, berserker has its explanation in itself as well. A warrior that has forsaken all tactic and dips into his primal, savage instincts to survive the jungle (okay, somehow I now got the picture of almost-naked Lord Faren jumping from branch to branch… that’s weird!)? I still wonder how Tempests and Chronos fit into this, but then again, I haven’t played those classes (yet).

Tempest, we moved from the calm seaside continent, where a little wind and rain is all we know, to the heart of the jungle, where huricanes, monsoons, and hot winds blow.

As for chronomancer.. well.. they’re mesmers.. it’s more a matter of why it took so long for them to try something completely weird

We obviously couldn’t use the entire Guild Wars as a fractal, but individual encounters/events in the Guild Wars could be used. A prominent fight between 2 or more of the more powerful guilds. Or when King Doric went and pleaded with the Gods to stop it, or even when Abaddon started the whole thing could all be good events from the Guild Wars to make a fractal out of

yea, I did once recommend a fractal where we are replaced by human models (just like Urban and Thaumanova) and we join Jadoth. The last fight would be at the beaches where Jadoth pleads to Abaddon, and we have to defend him. Then we get great power, and can fight back to the Mursaat, one of them being a boss.

Abimelech, the Usurper (Mursaat)
joined by
Cairn, The Unquestionable
Cairn, The Immaterial
Asaath, The Honest Truth
Seödda, The Ascendant

Abimalech is invulnerable, fighting the invulnerable Jadoth.
The players must kill the 4 champions, the last one standing will usurp the power, heal 66% of the lost health, and gains a more advanced version of his combat mechanic. Upon defeat, you can rejoin Jadoth and quickly despatch of Abimelech.

I dont agree with that
the fact that Anet has allowed this elitist tool in game that sees there own player base being excluded from content just astounds me

You see it as elitist, I see it as a helpful tool to see whether or not I’m pulling my own weight in a raid, not to judge others. I don’t see it as an elitist at all, not in the slightest. From my point of view has only done good for me and my friends.

So lets break it down, what are you doing that DPS meters get you aggravating. Are you playing in a game mode where DPS is a very important aspect to clearing the content? If yes, then why are you are against a tool that allows you to see if you fulfil that role. If you’re not doing content where DPS is the primary aspect, then why are you bothered by it?

In short, if you’re doing raids, why are you against a tool that shows DPS.
If you’re not doing raids, why do you care about the existence of DPS meters in the first place?

Why are all the elder dragons in one place?

in Lore

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

Hi I was hoping I could pick someones brain about a few things.

  1. We already know of all the elder dragons from the Omadd’s machine vision, correct? There aren’t likely any other elder dragons out there?
    Dragons, yes, Elder, no
  2. All spheres of influence/magic are covered by the elder dragons we know about?
There are six domains, the dragons who control this domain are called the Elder
  3. If #1 is true, why did they all fall asleep right around core Tyria? Why not Cantha or one of the unexplored continents?
This is just speculation, but they fell asleep because the Bloodstones were made to seal all the magic in the world. Propably they acknowledged that trouble was rising for them, so they started heading towards Tyria, but couldn’t prevend the activation of the Bloodstones. Again, just a theory, but it would explain why they were somewhat close. Maybe it was infighting that prevented them from stopping the Bloodstones
  4. Did the elder dragons travel across the entire planet last time they awoke? Did they destroy the unexplored continents and then return to core Tyria?
There is absolutely no way of knowing what they did before the Bloodstones. Maybe they were never as ravanous as we think of them now. Back then, no one could resist them, so maybe they just napped away while eating magic. They never had to fight, destroy any opposition, they were at the top of the food chain. The lion who sleeps all day and eats a deer in the evening
  5. How exactly were the bloodstones created? The information from the GW1 wiki contradicts the information we have learned from recent GW2 content. Were they made by seers/mursaat to hide magic from elder dragons? Or were they in fact made by the human gods using king Doric’s blood as a way to split schools of magic apart? Was this retconned, or is the contradiction actually because we don’t really know and the story is making it ambiguous?
They were made by unison of the elder races, we know that much as a fact. But besides that, every race has their own way of recording history, and will ammend this to their views, beliefs, etc. Hence, there’s no way of saying anything with certainty. What we learned in GW1 isn’t necessarily wrong, it was simply the Seers’ version of hisotry, and human records. The Bloodstones were made by the elder races. They were later found the human gods who took them to Arah. Here Abaddon unleashed the seal, effectively causing the great Guild Wars, whose namesake of the game, is the event that caused all trouble we’re dealing with (directly, or indirectly). King Doric’s blood was used to reseal the stones (partially) and it was only from this moment on that they were called the Bloodstones.
  6. Where does Leyline magic come from?
It doesn’t come from anywhere. It’s like a nerve system of the planet. It was always here. We can drain magic out of it, pour magic into it, but the net magic flowing through the world will always be exactly the same, regardless of the state
  7. When an elder dragon eats the magic, where does it go?
It’s devourered and corrupted. After that, the dragon goes to sleep, magic seeps back into the leylines, and the cycle is continued. Dragons propably see us as leeches or parasites because we also drain the magic
  8. Why can’t other creatures eat magic (or can they?).
depends on the creature. Elementals are sentients born from abundant magic. Demons (I think) might be similar to elementals, but born from corrupted magic. The case is kind of a battle in linguistics, how do you discriminate between consuming magic, storing magic, using magic, and absorbing magic. We keep magic inside our bodies, but we don’t consume it, we only store it

Thanks in advance!

Disclaimer in advance, these are personal observations of history and events. It boils down to, even ingame, history is a flaky thing tainted with personal bias of the races and historians. no source is reliable from a historians point of view. We can only collect the archives, and record the matchings and contradicting writings

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Amaimon.7823

the problem with using the Guild Wars as a fractal, is the fact that it’s an era, not a single event. The Guild Wars is something akin to world war 1, 2, the great civil war, the cold war, you name it. It’s not one fight, its a lot of fights between a lot of groups over a long course of time.

A summarized history is: Abaddon cleaves the bloodstone limiter, and people can use magic, all magic, that is. They’re practically mursaat, maybe one step lower. They all think they have the power to rule now, many nations, many families, but mainly, all the guilds show up to claim their stand in the world. The guilds were the largest and most organized groups and they fought with a tenacity not met by armies or rich families.
Eventually, King Doric acknowledged that mankind would rid itself if it continued this fight, so he pleaded to the gods to end it. He offered himself as tribute for mankind’s foolishness, too, hence the runestones became “bloodstones” from that moment on. The gods didn’t want to fully reseal the magic again because of the damage already done, but returned it to a controlled flow. It’s what prevents any one person from learning all schools of magic at once. I don’t know exactly how long the guild wars lasted, but they had a significant impact on the world, and shaped the nations as they are today. I think I read once that the Kurzicks and Luxons are one of the few remaining guilds who were at war at that time (although then it was for the guild wars and not yet for the relics, I think they were even somewhat allied until the Jade Wind happened).

disclaimer: when I say one step below Mursaat I mean it in the technical sense. Mursaat have no limitations in their magic, and so did the humans at the time of the great guild wars. They mursaat were still a step higher because beside the natural magic, they also wielded Agony, an aura they adopted to within the mists, or some kind of veil between the world and the mists

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

A fractal where we assist Lornar in his stalwart defense of Beacon’s Perch against Hill Giants.

This isn’t possible, The Great Hill Giant Invasion from 534 a.e. is known to had been stopped by Lornar single-handedly. He had no allies to assist him.

we’re not copying an event in the mists, we’re being inserted into an event that took place. We’re itnruders, we’re the anomalies in the event. Even if there was a holy event that took place between 2 individuals, it’s still possible for a fractal to have more people because fractals aren’t events, they’re memories of events. And we learned from various fractals already that the memories can be combined, crossed and bend. So when we get there we might still see just Lornar fighting off the others, but can then join the fight. We’re not rewriting history, just being horseshoed into a memory of something that happened

I have to say you are correct and this is a pretty valid argument. However, it makes you wonder about the storytelling in fractals – because of this, we don’t get any substantial knowledge of the events that transpired. We only get bits of context and nothing more. Becuase of this format we can’t know if (for example) humans from volcanic fractal were actually saved or if the imbued grawl shaman actually still lives somewhere and continues to kill. This might be seen as a design flaw or not, depending on preferences. In my opinion this makes the fractal story meaningless because we don’t get definitive answers, and I like definite answers. Sorry for offtop but this was an interesting thought to ponder on.

That is an interesting take on the matter, and tbh, I hadn’t even thought that far yet.
What i mean to say is, the event we see is how it really happened, so as far as NPC’s were involved, they really did what we see them do. The number of people, or the people involved, can vary greatly, though.
Like, in case of the volcanic fractal I do believe that the grawl were truly sacrificing people, and they were rescued. However, the exact evaluation may be unique to our performance. eg. how many people were saved, which were saved, how well did the mission go, and was the setting as simple as the memory of the mist remembered it, or was the cave empty because it only remembered significant things
like, when you run through a cave in a fractal, and its empty, was it really empty in reality, or were there things that the mists found inconsequential, not worth remembering.

TLDR, it’s impossible to tell to what extent the fractals are memories of real life events, and to what extents things are forgotten or changed.
Because the mist is a non-sapient being, I do not believe there is a conscious choice in remembering this, but rather, a systematic one. Like does the individual who survive here, come back in another memory, then yes, his existence is important. Does their death or survival change the outcome, if no, then we forget about them

But in all respects, everything about the mists is speculation, because even in-game they’re stagnant about the fact that no one really knows what the mists are and what they do and don’t do.

It pops when you have one condition, so it will only cleanse one condition. after that, is a cooldown before it can cleanse another condition. Remember, it doesn’t activate “Shake it Off” but rather causes an effect that’s programmed to act like “Shake it Off”.
I agree it should maybe cleanse two conditions since the shout cleanses 2, but since it’s a programmed skill to copy the shout it’s working as intended at the time. They recently changed the shout to cleanse 2 conditions instead of 1, but the trait may not have been updated. I also doubt they will, and will rather change the tooltip to say it only cleanses 1 condition, since an autocleanse of two conditions would maybe be a bit too powerful

Can elemental possess a body/living creature?

in Lore

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

‘Elemental’ seems to be a broad term for “creature made from a single substance/phase, which shouldn’t be alive, but is due to being animated by magic”.

That said, things like the leyline coalescences and bloodstone elementals could be viewed as essentially being air and earth elementals respectively: just that they have even more magic in them than typical elementals.

it doesn’t even have to be a single substance:
“a sentience (not sapience) born from magical abundance, that inhibits a body otherwise inanimate” I think is the most correct description of an elemental. Supposedly, a body made of a single material might be easier to stick together.
So in general, I believe (while it won’t happen in nature) its possible for a piece of siege equipment to become an “elemental” if it’s left to gather rust in an environment that’s abundant in magic

The question is more whether they’re salty or not. I’d like to imagine they’re sweet instead, since water in plants do tend to take a sweeter taste to it.

yea, I agree, either it’s rich in sucrose.. or just not rich in anything but water, but coming from a plant I can’t consider it being salty.. not when I think about real world plants

“generally a bad narrative move if Lazarus turns out to be a fake.”
On the opposite, it allows for plot twists, and a redemption of Lazarus. In case you hadn’t noticed, the current Lazarus is a mockery of the original one. A bad joke, if you will. So if he turns out incomplete, or fake, then suddenly everything will make sense. For him to be genuine and complete in his current state is what I would consider to be terrible writing giving his recent personality

Do Sylvari cry tears?

What Ardid said, I believe they just cry normal water, (not salty like ours).
But since they mimicked humans in pretty detail, it’s very probable they can
cry like we do. it could also be that they weep without tears, that’s still entirely
possible as tears are just 1 aspect of the concept of weeping.

The issue there is that normally, you’d expect people to write their true feelings in their own journal… unless, that is, Bauer was expecting that someone would read his journal.

some people, especially those in cults and emperator orders, do tend to write their journals in code, or in a riddly fashion only they themselves would be able to translate. Often because they contain knowledge thats important to remember, but could prove fatal to your works if an enemy found it.
It’s never out of the question how far people go to speak in..- write in tongues

Hmmn. OK, I’ll keep an eye out; I was chalking it down to a combination of me not remember to toggle off “snap to ground” and not paying enough attention to the cursor. From Amaimon’s detective work, it might be wonkiness due to specific skills.

@Amaimon: please also use the in-game /bug reporting tool, too, if you have time. This one seems easier to replicate than a lot of bugs, but it’s still usually helpful to be able to find the logs of it happening “in the wild”. That is, /bug should help them troubleshoot.

don’t worry, I did, sadly there’s no way of seeing whether an ingame bug report is handled correctly, although you can’t see whether a dev sees it here, either. Posting it both here, and making an ingame report increases the chances of a dev seeing it, and fixing it.

oh, how I miss those days

“The last day dawns on the Kingdom of Ascalon.
It arrives with no fanfare, no tolling of alarms.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.
People carry on with their daily lives, unaware that in a short while . . .
Everything they have ever known will come to an end.”
