Pretty sure you bonked it up since only 10 minutes are up.
Viscorimancer Zinn, Biomagus Kalpkk, etc, you can seriously just throw results of a letter mixing RNG system with anything to do from magic to death.
And it doesn’t make sense for our long range support/utility weapon to have a melee cleave.
Our strongest instant burst is on that long ranged utility weapon. Look for example the Ranger longbow, it will always give out lower dps than the shortbow, its used mostly for the zone control utility and cc, but if you can sit there and snipe with 1500 range shots, it gets to dish out quite the damage, (now for a bit of bias based on my meleeish tanky build) now imagine how much life force we could pull off if we had a cleave that gives 3% LF pre enemy every second (thus 3/4 cast time).
Aatxes (maybe turning a traited golem into one) and Risen Chiken as JH and Bone Minions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ9dtZ8lYww)!
What about this, make the auto attack kind of like the mesmers, except instead of increasing damage at further range, make it so that the scythe does a cleaving melee attack when the target is in melee range.
This way we could keep our long range attack, and gain a cleaving melee attack (something necro really lacks), and then we can all feel like Reapers of death!
Thats kinda exactly what i wrote.
Right that’s because the mechanics in dungeons are more about defensive measure independent of gear, dodging or positioning, or simply knowing the mechanics of a fight.
Just to mention, that while possible to do (a thief did solo GL), it does burden either time (it took him around 2 hours) or the actual design of a fight (aka exploits and cheating a system in place, like using 30+ fishing nets on the Ghost Eater in AC for a 2 minute immobilize that he cant purge when kited away from the traps).
Some dungeons on the other hand (looking at you CoE and SE) plain have broken bosses or enviorment against specific classes (good example would be the consume condition golem who throws fire aoes and bursn around him… and that should a necro attack how?)
Ds already is the long ranged power damage attack and you know that there is this thing called a conditional trigger, thus just how theif skills swap around when in stealth and eles with attunement swaps, a necro staff swapping to a melee cleave while in melee range would remove a weapon requirement for the next expansion or so on.
Also, talked to another Necro MM in my guild. He suggested a very unique build.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNAW3djEat61aGb07JAJFNT9kCuBH6RuSXLAI honestly think I see the draw of such a build. With the higher axe damage, I’m still helping out in the team through said damage even if my minions bite the dust. I also can see the draw of the Signet of Spite. While I love my Flesh Wurm, I can see how the signet will increase power(which means, I think, increased minion damage.) So I find this build very credible for dungeons.
The traits are variable in terms of Minions since only 20 into DM is actually required for the 50% hp increase (or they plain melt) sadly the benefits of being a minion master dont make much use of Signet of Spite (what is also our worst signet), Dark armor (you really aint supposed to tank with MM zerker or rabid setups) and the reanimator trait if you dont get Death Nova.
It is probably a good WvWvW solo setup.
I think we’re working on different definitions of accessible, but thank you for clarifying.
What you guys are calling ‘accessibility’ I just look at as as mechanical or technical skill – the need to press more buttons at a faster rate than another class.
Accessible = easy to be obtained/option with least amount of required resources, its pretty close to the same across all classes in net worth, the learning curve, mechanical knowledge and skill ceiling aint, thus the more keybind clicks needed isnt about balance but reactionary skill and general playstyle of class. A ele is way better on the offensive than on the defensive in terms of combo usage because of their limited reactionary skills outside of Mist, RArmor and Shock Aura, while a necror or warrior for example have a plethora of reactionary options, but unlike the eles they dont work on their offensive setups, causing for problems as to the players view on balance.
Examples of overpowered and just lack of reaction options that got nerfed on a thief:
Int sigil swap backstab into Assassination Signet – Balance problem (low cost semi spammy 20 k hits on damage dealers/instadown)
Well at least thats what i think the logic was behind the nerfs….
Pistolwhip spam – Reaction problem (while the ability was balanced on its own and its resource consumption, lack of overall stability options/fast stun breaks gave it a pubstop effect, kinda like Pudge in Dota if the ward restock is on cooldown)
(edited by Andele.1306)
I hope that you know i have to hate you for this part if you do it in a organized group. that isnt going for casual farm…
People actually play PvE other than to casual farm? (Fractals not included, I’m level 2 there). I haven’t found a dungeon hard enough to warrant a real armor set, or in the case of CoE, that armor would actually make a big difference.
Old arah was (i think it gave me some mental issues since i dont even dare to try pug it) and some might agree on New AC 3 (the bubble sometimes doesnt work, SE 3 and numerous other path 3s of explorable mode.
And as you mentioned, Fractals, especially 10+ is pretty much have some decent level armor (minimum 30% weaker then full exotic stats) or you are a burden for the team/getting carried. Not that playing dungeons in such a way is impossible while still trying to make good progress, but it just isnt nice to the other people and your own characters death count.
Ofc there are specific setups and exclusions (like the mesmer in CoF 4 Zerk Warrior farm can be naked for all they care if he can get past the boulders, drop his utilites and elite or the HoTW/CoE Lodestone farm with 2 Guardian or their poor mans alternative 2 Ele with Mesmer and Hunter setups that can go whatever they want and even take another person with them, but those are pretty hardcore into min maxing and ignoring the fun.
There is just no way that you can make an elementalist have that kind of accessibility without completely pooping on the balance at higher levels.
F3-4-5-F1-3-4-5-F4-3-4-3-5-Pop arcane shield = Ele version of Rage Signet – Bull’s Charge – Frenzy – 100B
I’m really not sure what your point was with that post?
You just compared a 13 skill sequence involving two attunement swaps to a 4 skill combo available on one weapon, in a conversation about accessibility. So you’re agreeing…?
Its the same type of hard hitting combo, only on a full aoe basis, the elementalist is designed to be a attunement swapping class so no, i just pointed out that you can do just as much with the ele as with the warrior, its actually even more accessible than the warrior setup because it doesnt require any utility slots selected and keeps the enemy cc locked for the duration.
Balancing the game at lower levels is impossible. Way too many of the perceived imbalances are people just being terrible at the game. For example, look at how many people still complain about warriors and Hundred Blades, which is extremely easy to prevent and avoid. If ArenaNet nerfed this ability, warriors would be gutted at high-end play, where balance actually matters due to tournament play, because a few people at low-level play have no idea how to move or position.
Besides, low-level players will always find something else to complain about. Bad players have a tendency to blame the game before themselves, which is why they stay bad. The best players are always analyzing how they did and how teammates performed, which is why they consistently improve.
Bad =/= low level play; its just bad, for a example im terrible in wvwvw, i dont even try since i know ill do something wrong (use supply for the wrong blueprint, drop my wells on the zerg retreat or stuff like that) and if ment on a general pvp game scale, i cant play dota on a adept level for kitten, ward wrong so that instead of covering a zone its locked in, cant pull a entire wave to creeps and in general suck at stacking), but all that doesnt mean a person doesnt know the basics, a person who doesnt ward and auto attacks in dota isnt low level, its plain bad, same in GW2, for wvwvw not carrying supply or having a source of movment speed buffing, and for PvP not carrying stun breaks, builds that dont make sense, etc
The game does actually try to teach all the basics (trough pvp and pve), so except for the bad build part, you cannot blame it on a game being unable to be balanced, just stupidity.
PvE is fine right now. That isn’t to say that everything is perfect, but looking at the general population, there isn’t enough min/maxing needed to really worry about what happens when you push classes to their limits. This is why you can run dungeons in greens, or rare MF gear (like I do) and be fine.
I hope that you know i have to hate you for this part if you do it in a organized group. that isnt going for casual farm…

I was never bragging. I was qualifying. But I do find it different how many psychological defense mechanisms kick in when someone brings up a game that someone else failed at or never quite grasped.
The difference between a professional sports player and a professional e-sports player is that professional sports are generally much easier to understand. What’s happening on the screen is readily apparent due to the stricter structure of professional sports. That doesn’t apply to Guild Wars 2; most people don’t come close to grasping elements like positioning or playing defensively with offense in MMORPGs. (I would be surprised if 90 percent of GW2 players even thought about proper positioning for one second.)
It would be one thing if the hosts were just playing devil’s advocate. That’s fine. But almost every conversation was ended with one of the hosts saying he disagrees. Silly.
It’s obvious this lack of humility will never change, so I’ll leave it at that.
1. You know, please come and brag when you get dragon rank in GW2 pvp, since WoW arenas aint for bragging (seriously i got the Deady Frost Wyrm and whatever the title was for the pale green Neither Drake just by spamming macros when off cooldown with 2 friends that used their 2-6 skill rotation spam).
2. Yes since a little guy who is obviously in a giant circle that changes the longer he is in and a thief that wants to help his ally on another spot is really that complicated… next thing youll say that a mass of zerglings fighting a group or marauders and marines isnt obvious in SC2.
3. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouKeepUsingThatWord about your use of the word humility…
Haha, I apologize. Making videos is new to me and since its a podcast it’s a little different. It has a lot more to do with how I combined the two than the pictures I took.
I know, just saying that if something is jarring to the eye, a lot of people will turn it down, first impressions do matter despite how untrue that should be in a objective world.
Oh, and still 6/6 Rune of the Ice. 5% damage plus chill duration and a defensive hydromancy proc is just too good to give up.
Lyssa (being probably the strongest rune at the time), Mad King (close to lyssa, but 4~10k damage depending on build just doesnt compare to a full buffed plague or lich form) and Exquisite Emerald Jewels (most direct stat benefit) give more.
Btw, here is a alternate setup with traits and utilites if you are in a dungeon where the minions just cant do anything except die or even hinder progress *cough jade maw cough*, remember Life Blast is your main spam attack.

Oh for the sake of the five, please add a background to your youtube channel and use a higher quality picture for the videos, its not really something that people should care about since the podcasts are audio only, but it still is important…

He was really bragging about WoW? WoW wasnt even a PvP’ers game. Kitten Carebear.
Then again, Zerg Wars is certainly no DAoC either…
Actually, once upon a time, in a cold valley far far away, it was a epic pvp battle of 40 on 40 with coordinated fights and PvE elements (hint hint, twas old Alterac Valley) and the higher level streams you find on twitch of coordinated pvp is quite interesting and has a depth of setup strategy… that is if both teams are lacking mobility.
Also a (sadly) direct on the point video about WoW PvP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl1WP1YCiw0
I think that pointing out that a Asura racial skill is better says it all…
I mean, don’t be contradictory in every point, but if the hosts are surprised by an opinion, it’s better to ask why a view is a particular way than to just allow / deny.
I wanted to point out though that Bhawb’s mic / software / something tended to cut or have static noises or pop throughout. I know you can’t really control the guest’s audio, but the hosts need to come through clearly.
Not to try and defend it (since it is there and there is time for improvement), but here is the why its like that, since the actual host is just Bas/he records it/is the only one who hears the wav file and truning from a .vrf to .wav and then to mp3 causes pretty heavy changes in the preformance. For short stuff that they might not hear during recording pops up.
Barring healers, stacking resilience was terrible for most classes and comps. And I played long enough to see way more than just paladins and druids being overpowered, but I did not play those classes.
Just the fact you didn’t know these things should humble you a bit.
*cough bullfeces cough* Every person who ever did was big into pvp (old Arathi Basin) later laughed about how crappy the 3v3 setup is and resilience was overpowered. Hell Swifty (aka razors pvp avatar in wow right now) said on Blizzcon 2009 that they are a bad joke, just as battlegrounds with how prevelant the damage reduction from resilience is (being able to wreck up to 69~73% total damage reduction),. I really dont know what it is right now since i had a big pause during Wrath and finally quit when they did the all dungeon nerfs in Cata, but PvP is and will be 3-6 interrupts, 2+ all movement impairing effect removals (counting trinket ofc) and a hardcore healer that the enemy wants to bring down with a lot of strafe behind pillars. What class is or isnt op really doesnt matter (used druid and pally as a example from when some of my friends did it and the arenajunkies tier list back then).
All this from a ex troll Shadow priest Vampiric embrace tap heal/battery.
Not to be condescending, but as someone who was top 5 in World of Warcraft arenas.
Yes, the WoW arenas that were 99% have pally and druid (or depending on their current balance warlock/shammy) that can keybind and win…
Oh and stack all the Resilience!
I’m definitely down for more runs, I’m actually willing to lead some runs in the evenings to help fellow necros find new builds and tactics for the new version of AC, so if anyone is interested in that I’ll head it up. Just be prepared to set aside enough time to do it. It does take a good bit longer now to complete.
You can still skip a nice bit of each path in AC, so if people in the group overall on a bit tighter time frame, you can still do it.
I’ve only done path 2 so far, and yeah you can skip some of the groups people normally skip. Wasn’t sure about the others but p2 did seem to take a lot longer than it used to.
The end bosses take a bit longer and with CC the spider boss is still just cutting cake with a kitten sword, the last bosses do take coordination trough.
Arah path 4 all necro? Don’t think that has been ever done before. But they did nerf the boss so it is easier now.
If i got solo all the way to lyssa (with a lot of DS trash mob skips) in rares, i think it could be managed, grenth wraith could be a problem but again, mostly depends on coordination.

Replace downed skill 3 with zombie transform. Become a random risen, from risen chicken to abomination. Works like vengence.
You know that Downed 3 is pretty much a poison version of Well of Suffering, right?
@Reflexmonkey.1943
Let me try to retrun to topic, first about your suggested changes:
Necrotic Grasp – Needs 100% finisher and a bit faster projectile speed, true, other changes arent needed since it would really make a necro withot staff utter kitten (forcing into builds is bad).
Warhorn – Locust swarm is probably the best ability from all offhands in terms of class functions, the swiftness/cripple aint so important, but the additional life force generation and multiple hits (for vampiric/procing on crit stuff/shields that are based on hit counts).
Daze is a nice aoe, no real change needed (but it would be nice if it didnt have a actual travel time but be instant on the conal aoe).
Cant comment on minions since i still think we should be able to summon multiple by locking off Death Shroud as a grandmaster death trait.
Death Magic itself does need minior trait rewamps since it doesnt provide worth if not specialized.
Blood Magic Traits – just give them scailing (or a current small base + % max hp).
DS in general needs to be revealed (how it takes armor and hp into account, real numbers DS can tank, why it doesnt stunbreak when traited with Foot in the Grave, etc) and UI fixed.
Spectral Wall – all wall effect skills work that way, i do hope that they turn it into a dome instead of just a wall or make a trait for it.
Wells – general 30 second cooldown on all wells = all problems about them solved, balanced by current setup.
CPC – full rework, freaking asura racial is better than it.
Signets… well even i cant reply to this one till we would know how the rest would work out but they do need tweaking.
Dagger – Dark pact cast reduction to 1/2, Life siphon is good as it is
Corrupt Boon and Epidemic – 1/2 cast time on each, 25 seconds cooldown on each, detection like underwater and Corrupt Boon not being projectile based anymore.
Spectral Grasp – Since they homogenized the other 2 pulls in game to be of same net max range, just make it teleport the enemy to 240 range infront of you and chilled, nothing else is needed, just making it 100% hit unless dodged = perfect.
What times did you want to kick start them Andele?
16th of march, spanning to the 27th. Time depends on the people interested, but the maximum frame is between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM PST.
Because of minior time constrains on monday, the podcast later on and then the birthday of someone, i think it could start on next Saturday. There will be no special gear requirements (just the actual dungeon level requirement) since it aint speedruns or stuff like it and till Arah you can go with whatever build you like (as in minion masters are invited to the party) and maybe even then, i mean a thief managed to solo GL in around 30 minutes, thus a party with 4 MM could do it too.
Sorry quick edit there, noticed something on friday that would probably be in the middle of a dugneon.
(edited by Andele.1306)
I’m sorry if you failed to read the rest of the thread, but I said long ranged power option.
Ignoring what bas and bhawb have already said, you know, there is this thing every necro should carry, its a big stick, you use it to smack people, from 1410 range, with giant black claws that home for 1200 range and then fly straight for another 210 (distance to middle of a mark then range of ranger greatsword attack from the middle of it). If you really dont want to use DS, but still have long range and do direct damage, use it, since you wont get another option.
Weapons that might happen in terms of effects is aoe control/projectile reflection offhand and melee cleave.
Just finished watching, had great flow (and good tips with the Lich Well trick, so many people dont use it; btw plague works too since it gives a small boost in power), the boon talk was interesting.
Thanks we got really sidetracked and then I realized we were talking Ele’s and Rangers haha.
Thats exactly the reason why, the 2 classes i really liked in beta (and i even said back then that DD ele has potential to be overpowered but used sigils and glyphs thus didnt get the vigor and might benefits of cantrips) and am leveling while listening to the podcasts.
Just finished watching, had great flow (and good tips with the Lich Well trick, so many people dont use it; btw plague works too since it gives a small boost in power), the boon talk was interesting.
good idea with the podcast. Still feel necro is one of the most powerful and dynamic classes in the game… hence their abundance in tier1 WvW.
Pretty sure that its just that Epidemic (overall) and Golem Charge on gate are op as hell.
Everyone forgets about Deathwish
Noone likes you bonestaff, people think that even the sparkly rainbow staff with crystal female pleasure vibration things is better than about you.
One Spite, both Curse, both Death Magic, both Blood Magic, and both Soul Reaping 30 traits are worth it. The spite axe training isn’t worth it because it just isn’t enough of a damage upgrade IMO, but I would imagine if you are using axe as your main weapon in a power build, it might be worth it.
Still, 9/10 good traits are definitely a lot better than most other classes have it.
Curses could at best count as master traits, with master of corruption and terror being close to good grandmaster ones despite not being there.
10% chance on boon strip is… utterly useless, hello well of corruption and corrupt boon.
In Blood the Transfusion trait is what id say a good grandmaster one for its power and how it changes the use of Life Transfer, fetrid consumption is just medicore since it pulls conditions on intervals and most of the time the minions will die if they pull 5 bleeds or something like that… making Vampiric Master pointless since minions dont live for long enough to do what you specced them to do.
Foot in the Grave isnt worth it as a grandmaster till they return shade effect into it and near to Death is there for the DS hopping setups, but its equivalents are either adept or master traits for other classes. Now compare those to how Engie grandmaster traits change setups or Warriors affect build effciency. Not saying that they are bad, but they stay on around the same worth, no matter if adept or grandmaster.
Why just settle on one, ALL OF THEM ARE AWESAUSCE! Well at least bette than a rainbow ornament that has what looks like little flying “eggs” surrounding it (you know what i mean if you ever saw something a guy shouldnt be allowed to see).
if i would have to chose id go with Final Rest>Crossing>Scythe Skin (just because it doesnt have fancy animations and wasnt bugged for 5 months).
The thread is about how “weird” the necro skill tree is. We do go off topic a lot. ^^
Haha, I thought this topic was about how awesome the warrior tree was compared to the Necro which made me laugh because I have an 80 warrior and that tree is a joke. Traits in odd locations, Abilities you would never use. Strong abilities early in the tree, and really weak stuff later on.
Elementalist have the same issue they have quite a few 30 point horrible talents which is why so many of them go 30 arcana or 30 water because those are amazing talents.
Well the only ones that we have worth the actual 30 slot are Death nova (lets you minion bomb thus making a impact on playstyle) and Close to Death (obligatory 20% damage increase when enemy is low/if has x or y on him), maybe Foot in the Grave if we are going from no stability perspective too. For warriors, Defy Pain, Physical Training, Vigorous Shouts and Inspiring Battle Standards in Tactics making a actual 2 builds pre tree choice, Quick Bursts and Adrenaline Reserves in Tactics (more fire combo fields/aoe stuns or keeping damage from adrenaline traits while still getting the greatsword fury). As for eles you are right, but thats mostly because how inefficient the traits become when you swap around a lot or specific to weaker builds (written in stone and presistant flames).
If I wanted to do smaller buffs/fixes, it would look something like this.
Class Mechanic
- Death Shroud UI fixed. You can now see what boons and conditions you are affected by.
- Life Force gained when in Death Shroud is equal to the amount gained when something is killed in regular form.Spectral
- Spectral Armour cooldown reduced to 60 seconds.
- Spectral Grasp pathing tweaked. It’s now less likely to be obscured by smaller elevation changes and targets are more likely to be pulled the full distance.Corruption
- Corrupt Boon now functions like Epidemic; it checks for LoS/targeting only at the beginning of its cast.
- Corrosive Poison Cloud now ticks every 1.5 seconds as opposed to every 3.
- Epidemic cast time reduced to 2/3rds of a second. This isn’t touching weapon skills, bigger/more idealistic buffs, traits, or the abilities of other classes.
These are good and realistic changes, although I think that you would see an increase in the CD of Epidemic was brought down.
Putting Corrupt boon and Epidemic on same cooldown (25 or 20) with a 3/4 cast time and as epidemic right now is in terms of requirements would be amazing (especially if corrupt boon cannot be dodged like epidemic), but i dont see that happening since it would give a set outside of wells of one type utility only that would work…
Cast times are mostly fine. The problem is projectile speed. See: Dark Path, Spectral Grasp, Staff autoattack...
^This.
I have no problem with cast times. Think about it, we are pretty hard to kill (yes, I know we have no escapes at all, only damage sponge) so having fast cast skills will result on something pretty OP...
But having slow movement projectile speed is something really bad in a game with fast combat like this, since people can make you fail those skills simply by walking away without dodging at all.
Lack of reliable long terms stability as a class that should scale better with fight duration *cough unlike the yang to our yin, the guardian* long cast times are pretty problematic.
Bas, do hold onto your dreams about minions, but nothing beats Well of Darkness and Plague Form when combined with the LF to DS that dead corpses from Corruption and Suffering are created in terms of tanking.
I’ve forced stability into my build because of this heh. Nothing worse than getting ready to let loose with the big guns and getting knocked all over the place. Just wish they would up it (foot in the grave) to 4 or 5 seconds, 3sec is just a bit stingy.
Or return it giving the Shade effect (perma effect stability and unstoppable while in DS).
Easy way to test it, against enemy pve conditions since a ton of mobs apply conditions on bleed, but i know for sure that bruning in fractals (standing still on grawl one at last boss to get it) does tick with DS, it degenerates it faster rounding up to 2% LF pre tick (with 30%+ LF from Soul Reaping and Soldier gear) while confusion from reef drakes (5 stacks) takes 6% pre life blast cast.
I listen to the first parts of the podcast. It is good but a bit long. I think it should be kept at 15 minutes each and focus on one specific aspect or topic. You can make 4 episodes in one weekend setting. But release them over 4 weeks.
Or you can just leave it running while doing something else *cough leveling alt or eating food* and enjoy, 15 minute versions pre topic or highlights could be a thing to upload on youtube (the specific part pre guest).
(edited by Andele.1306)
I would ask a question (like is 30 into SR viable to give a source of stability, Lich vs Plague as elite and stuff), but since i dont bother with tournaments outside of leaving random game commentary in the background if bored and never even looked at what actual necro setups are used, i dont think it would be worth it.
Honestly? The problem is that other classes need long cast times as well.
This game is supposed to have counterplay.
So many powerful abilities have no wind-up cough backstab.
It wouldnt matter since you can only cast it from stealth… also thats (sadly) not how the initiative system works.
Also i do have to agree with TheAgedGnome.7520, but add dark pact to it, for a medicore damage and single target immob, its 1 second cast + snap animation are too long, 1/2 would be better.
For focus 5 a 1 1/4, Life Blast a 3/4, DS 2 to be instant shot and Epidemic (and corrupt boon since no matter if no cast time or with one it still cant be used mid other channels like other classes instants) 1/2.
I think the cast times are fine. They are annoying, but they need to be there. It is a “Caster” class.
I do agree though that since it is a caster class it should have a wider range of abilities that can protect you during a cast and make sure you will kill your target effectively.
You clearly haven’t played mesmer or DD ele then. Both of those are “caster” classes that are full of instant cast skills and abilities that make for a fluid and enjoyable playstyle. Necro has a painful lack of instant cast abilties. DS3 is our only really accessible instant cast ability.
Not to mention that using one of our “instant casts” still interrupts any other cast (start lich form cast, use corrupt boon, lich goes on cd without transformation and 60% chance that CB missed) since noone of them are actual instants on-target effects (like scepter 1), but invisible projectiles (reason why there is a minior damage on doom/CB/Plague Signet and proccing vampiric).
Hmmm, lets compare again, flailing arms vs the spiritual version of a mother kittening LICH, what sounds cooler… right im sticking to DS.
