When I was a child, I had a yellow dog. I called him “Yellow Dog”. I thought it was a great name. Because he was yellow. And a dog.
Now I know better: I should have named him “Dog Barker Dog”. Because he was a dog. And barked. At other dogs!

Best Open World PVE duo companion to Druid

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ardid.7203

If it is for Open World, anything would work. What you are looking is something that is fun for both of you, without being too complicated.
Anything too tanky would be good to not die… but then your Druid wouldn’t have too much work to do, and could be boring for her. Also that way you probably will kill things too slow.
IMO, the best choice would be something with huge dps and not a giant lifepool, so you can take the risks while your lady keeps you safe, and both are doing interesting.
Depending the build, it could be anything, really.
Maybe a thief? You can provide sneak and damage, while she provides healing and support?

A sudden chuckle formed in my mouth when I saw her being named “Aurene”. I instantly thought in the Fantasian Auryn necklace given to Bastian to make his wishes reconstruct the world in The Neverending Story.

So a few Fantasian names that could sound great as dragon names:

Fujur
Graograman
Pjornkrachzark
Xayide
Ygramul
Querquobad
Smerg
Yskálnari

Edit to add a comment:
I have to add that I don’t specially dislike Aurene’s name. It is “meh” for me, but not in a bad way.

Its not stupid, raucous, nonsensical or childish like… “Dragon Hunter”.

NPC-only armors and faces compilation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

I can’t agree with you. The identity of the NPCs is made of a vast array of diverse elements, were the faces are only one. Also, the faces aren’t fixed, you can adjust and model them to detail.

People can make very accurate Scarlets right now, yet the NPC charisma and figure doesn’t suffer because that. People knows Scarlet anyway, and no one think she’s just a random npc without significant value because some players mimic her.

I think the variety of choices for the player are much, much, much more important than the “protection” of a very narrow, low on time screen, not very seen, super specific face of a NPC.

Therefore, due to their bad judgement, the nerf helped to reduce the diversity in Raid Squad’s composition, instead of adding diversity, which should have been the objective of the balancing measures in the first place.

TLDR: more of the same class = wrong balance measure.

Weapon Suggestion: Boomerangs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

I’ve said quite a few times already that, IF Anet finally decide to add more weapon types to the game, I hope they add Chain weapons and Boomerangs.

They are simply too unique and interesting not to have them, and far superior to any other weapon that will more or less be used the same as weapons we already have.

So I think your idea is great, OP. But I don’t think you should try to make the functionality of the boomerang too specific. In this game, weapons are first and foremost skins, and only on a second place, loose guides for the skills attached to them.

Think on the mesmer GS, or rev hammer. Weapon skills are not restricted to concrete uses at all.

So I believe is better to propose the boomerang:
1- As a more broad combat style: round, arcing trajectories that run across the field and came back to the player character, making positioning, timing and awareness very important.
2- And as an oportunity to develop skins: discs, stars, chakram, shuriken, kpingas, orbs, batwings… there is a lot that can be done with a weapon like this.

Junk Suggestions

I have a couple of suggestions regarding “junk”.

1) I’d like to be able to designate certain items (minor runes and sigils) as junk. This would mean that I’d auto sell them to merchants.

2) Items that say “This item only has value as part of a collection.” should also be junk, right? I understand that once you’ve picked them up they’ve been unlocked and that’s all you need.

Thoughts?

Logic of stats barriers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

I think the OP believes the gear stats shouldn’t be a “goal” in a game that doesn’t “gear grind” and whose major achievements are cosmetic items. Regardless of the cost.

I believe Fosio’s question is basically: Why pve gear stats aren’t just freely selectable, PvP style?

The answer is threefold:

1- Character Progression: Any RPG features, uses, and needs statistic development for its characters as a mean to make people feel they are growing, getting better, going somewhere. Its a staple of the genre. Maybe it shouldn’t be attached to gear… but that is matter for another discussion.

2- Economy: Gear justifies having an internal economy. Without needing to buy gear, it becames progresivelly hard to justify the existence of the TP. Of course, you could still commerce with skins and dyes, but more than half the mats out there would lose significance, therefore making farming, crafting and other “intermediate” activities irrelevant. Wich leads us to the third point.

3- Fun: Believe it or not, crafting is fun. As it is selling, buying and gambling. And hoarding, and organizing, and calculating. And even grinding. People do this things that should be a chore, in their SPARE TIME. They are willing to sacrifice precious hours of rest to… match absurd amounts of virtual items in a way that create abstract probability boosters attached to silly icons. Because the chores and choices are part of the fun too: the process of making a “viper” armor to improve a certain build incorporate work, choices and socialization, which make the result VALUABLE, and the whole experience worthy of our time. Fun.

Tat being said, remember the new, more expensive sets aren’t meant to be crafted. That is only a booby trap: you should be making cheaper sets to convert in the mystic forge. (Yes, getting this info is part of the game too)

Lion's Arch legal system

in Lore

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

Best source for Lion’s Arch is Sea of Sorrows, were the Captain’s Council politics and order forces methods in the “Free City” are hinted here and there.

However, you have to take on account the story of Cobiah Marriner happens a lot of years before the actual Lion’s Arch, and even before the GW2 “Old” one. So the legal and justice systems could have changed a lot in that time…

Also try to not lightly mix Divinity’s Reach, the Consortium and Lion’s Arch. In the game they seems to work inside the same set of rules (Were the human city follow the principles tightly, the ex pirate port intent to be more loose on that, and the Consortium directly want to bend and twist the rules for their gain…) but in the books there isn’t a clear agreement even in the basic values behind the laws…

IMO the peace between humans and charr meant a really really big change across all Tyria, even more relevant for a multicultural hub like LA, a change that the shared fight against the dragons crystallized into a much more stable and solid “Tyrian Society”: the new legal, cultural and somewhat moral “homogeneity” that we can see in-game when playing GW2 is the product of that.

As always, I digress. Just read the novels: they are fun and offer decent lore, and Sea of Sorrows is the best of the three.

Which Gear? Viper VS Berzerker VS Celestial

in Engineer

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

If you want to do Raids, probably viper is the more easily accepted, then berserker (But viper is useful for both, condi and power setups, while zerker only works with power).

If you are fairly good in active defense in the open world, (know how to evade, block, invul, etc) viper is perfect. You can reorganize your build anytime without needing to change armor.

If you are not that good, or if you don’t like to be on continuous killing machine paranoia, and prefer a more relaxed experience, then Celestial is your answer: you can use all kind of builds with celestial in the open world without fear of dying instantly, you can afk for a few seconds even middle-combat, and just walk across most mobs without worrying. But you will not be killing anything fast.

Legendary Light Armor Set style

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

The problem is not only the shape (as someone correctly pointed before, Sylvari and Norn are truly human shaped.) The problem is the “culture” or, more accurately speaking, the aesthetics: “Human” in GW2 means “Krytan-styled” (Or something similar). 4 of 5 races have NOT Krytan aesthetics.

So yes. While it make some sense to design first an armor with a shape that can be used with minimal changes on 3 of the 5 races, it doesn’t make sense to design aesthetics that only covers 1 of the main 5 cultures in the game world.

Would you like every single legendary armor was designed to look Charr-styled, or Sylvari-styled? Personally, I wouldn’t have any problem if they made all the legendary armor Asuran-styled. But that would be really unfair for the rest…

If you have doubts about this, please try to make a decent Asura lab, or a Norn looking cottage in your guild hall. It’s impossible: every decoration is Human (Aka, Krytan) styled. THIS IS UNFAIR.

- Magical and technological (And magitech) decorations: magic circles, consoles, machines, wall screens, altars, floating energy orbs, floating crystals, flasks, specimen cages, fluid tanks, microscopes, astrolabes, force fields, etc. Of course, golems, robots and elementals too, and pieces of them. All the actual decorations looks so primitive and mundane… doesn’t make sense with all the magi-scientific characters we have.

- Basic NPCs to populate the area. The least used of each player characters becomes a NPC in the hall too, just walking around and speaking lines according to its race and profession. This way we can influence the aesthetic of the NPCs too.
