Bitterfrost: Explorable content locked in BLC

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ardid.7203

The place is very valuable for traveling through the map. If we take on account that Bitterfrost seems to be fairly hard to navigate from the ground, this item becomes a truly precious thing, and a clear advantage over other players.

If there isn’t other way to get there, I’d say it’s a mild form of P2Play, but on the verge of P2W. IMHO, it is in the same spot as the Watchwork Mining Pick.

What would you call Aurene?

in Living World

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

A sudden chuckle formed in my mouth when I saw her being named “Aurene”. I instantly thought in the Fantasian Auryn necklace given to Bastian to make his wishes reconstruct the world in The Neverending Story.

So a few Fantasian names that could sound great as dragon names:

Fujur
Graograman
Pjornkrachzark
Xayide
Ygramul
Querquobad
Smerg
Yskálnari

Edit to add a comment:
I have to add that I don’t specially dislike Aurene’s name. It is “meh” for me, but not in a bad way.

Its not stupid, raucous, nonsensical or childish like… “Dragon Hunter”.

If you actually bothered to look into what Dragon Hunter was based on, you would understand. To quote wiki:
The Dragonhunter name was inspired by medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent, and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions.

Hahahaha. You should read all the amazing threads discussing the name that sprouted spontaneously when the DH was announced. There were at least a dozen of counter arguments to that “explanation” that were smart, sensible and hilarious as kitten. Just remembering those days make my eyes cry of laughter.

No matter the “reason” behind the Dragon Hunter name, it is still and will forever be a terrible name for an elite spec in GW2.

“High Concept” OMG, so funny.

Time range on Sylvari Cycles

in Lore

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

If Sylvari base their “cycle order” in the modern humans, then the current division is ok.
If they base their “cycle order” in the actual events that mark the day/night cycle in a normal planet, then indicating specific hours doesn’t make sense: dawn and dusk times move slow but constantly though the year, in such a way that they only hit the same (aprox) hour twice a year. The period between dusk and noon increases heading summer and decreases toward winter… ETC.

The point is: any fixed, static hour system wouldn’t be natural. If it is not natural, it really doesn’t matter if it coincides with nature, it’s just a convention. If you want natural rules, you can’t use fixed, equal, hour periods. You need to adjust to the way the sun actually interacts with the planet shape, with changing cycles of uneven light periods.

Think we'll get a rifle/FT buff Nov 21?

I use some close builds, and yes, I always use Rifle and FT, because I love them, and get more fun from them than from any other kit and weapon (I also stays in FT most of the time). However, I must point that, at least for me, it only works in Open World and some Dungeons. Whenever I try to use Rifle in PvP I get smashed. Whenever I try to use FT in WvW I kill myself.

So… in PvE, you can use almost anything, and it will work. The hard part is facing another players. There is where choices must be meaningful and balanced. And there is where I CANT use my favorite weapon, because it is NOT properly balanced.

Why Guards dont got +25% Movement Speed?

in Guardian

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

One of the few balance priorities this game gets good is the opportunity cost of travel movement vs fighting prowess: exploration and combat put over a scale, where the choice is yours. That is a really cruel, though and challenging choice, therefore, a meaningful, interesting and GREAT design choice.

Don’t forget that: flattening the speed all over the professions would only undermine variety, choices and, at the end, fun.

Let Guardians be “slow” if they must. They have a lot of movement skills to keep busy when traveling, and they are already a really strong profession. Don’t ruin it just to get an unbeatable combat build that will be boring and nerfed anyway.

They maybe replaced a “way to do” certain things. If such “way to do” was common, you’ll end with a big patch that apparently did nothing.

In CSS, for example, you could have detected a single class that you need to change on its root. (To keep order and consistency, usually. “2”, “right” or “a” are classic examples of classes you’ll eventually need to change). If a single object had the class, no problem. But if there were many thousands with the class… big update.

There are some theories about this.
Mine is there is some kind of company internal policy that makes everything they say here truly official. So they can’t easily take back any mistake they could make here, and if something escalates here, it could somehow lead to problems with the whole Anet.
So they prefer to talk outside, were the risk is smaller and the talking more informal.

In case of legendary cultural themed armoe: I have an asuran mage, an human necro and a sylvary mesmer. When I want to swap the armor between them, it must swap the shape as well, or it might look crappy.

I really like the idea, but I see no solution for that problem without unlocking culture armor across all races. So, a generic armor it is.

You can make it switch to the proper cultural race armor when switching from a character to another, like the Wedding Outfit does. Skins are not real, physical objects you can’t change or replace.

Cmon. What’s so great about Largos?
1- The wings. -> Clipping and visibility issues. Overlaps with gemstore products.
2- The white hair. -> Already accessible for humans, boring after the first, and when everyone gets the same. (I don’t think they can put many more tones of white on the character creation to give some variety…)
3- The underwater. -> Which Anet have tried to ignore as much as possible. You’ll end playing an aquatic race in dry terrain 95% of the time. (Insert Aquaman jokes here?)
4- The solitary hunting culture. -> Yep, we should be able to accept a race of lone, antisocial, menacing, self sustaining, quiet assassins… stacking boons in zergs of 20 or more and dancing while waiting for Teq hour.
5- The mask. -> Which would work same as good in humans or any other race. Also they’ll have to design a face for them (destroying the mistery), or many people would complain. It will also create a ton of issues with all the other helm skins.
6- The armor. -> Again, not race defining, anyone could use it. In fact, Mistward one is fairly similar, IMO.
7- The ears… Oh, my…

My GOD! The ears! How come I didn’t notice it before! Those longish, pointed, pale elven ears are the true defining feature of the Largos master race! No other race could have such beautiful, fierce, expressive, imposing, TRASCENDENT EARS!

I’ll shut my mouth from now on. I’m sorry for all my sarcastic words, please forgive me. I now see the truth. I too, want, no, I NEED to have a character with such incredible ears.

Why Armor is better (IMO)...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

As sorudo points out, nearly all the armor sets are simply one model that is scaled to fit different sized characters (i.e. morphing and stretching). Anet clearly doesn’t have to make a different armor set for each permutation of the height and weight sliders, so it’s highly unlikely that to put it on a Nord, Human or Sylvari requires any effort, and the Asura simply get different boots.

I can count with the fingers of a hand the boots that work properly on Asura. They don’t even make that effort.

Your epic solution can’t work:
No active Charr would be able to maintain balance without a tail.

Any Char that somehow lose the tail will, without any doubt, replace it with a mechanical weapon of some sort.

There are various tones in the Character Creator that look fairly “pale”. Some of the greys and greens work well for that.

What Asura don’t have are completely dark faces. I wanted to make a pitch black Stitch, but his face always ended being kinda “light coffee”. Hes beautiful anyway.

Also, why all the Sylvari skin tones have lips in a complementary color? It’s awful. It ok if some of them have that combination, but WHY ALL?

What would you call Aurene?

Little Tootlepeg(gy), Scalesy, Awwwblessit, and other such ridiculous names as and when they pop up.

My RL cat has its official, boring name for veterinary purposes, but it gets called myriad other names dependent on who’s doing the calling and what the fur-faced one itself is doing. She may call herself something else (Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats style), but we’ll never know. Aurene will be no different, and yes, I’m just going to ignore the fact Aurene calls herself Aurene. It never happened. Never.

My younger cat is called Presepio (Which is Portuguese for “Nativity Scene”. No, don’t ask). But we rarely call him that. His names change a lot, from “Democracia Monárquica” (Monarchic Democracy) to “Improperio Celestial” (Celestial Profanity), and lately “Pequeño Principe Pelágico” (Little Pelagic Prince).

He’s way more menacing and destructive than Aurene, though, so I don’t think his names could be used in this case.

I love FT and I can understand its AA just isn’t meant to be used on some places (Like PvP or WvW, two whole modes…). After all, FT is only one of your 3 utility skills, and it is a multi skill kit on top of everything.

On the contrary, Rifle is a whole 25% of ALL the alternatives you have for a weapon as an Engie. Since it is not the less viable, because pistol/shield, that 1/4 of the total becomes even more important. And it is incredibly underwhelming.

I’m ok with weapons not being optimal for everything. But first, there should be enough alternatives. Balance.

Rifle is not underwhelming because a planned and intelligent opportunity-cost design. It is bad because Anet has not made its job balancing it.

Elixir S -- The only invuln skill that sucks

in Engineer

Posted by: Ardid.7203

Ardid.7203

Invuln skills don’t stop “damage”. They ignore attacks. If you have condi damage on yourself, is because you have already been hit. If someone attack you with a condi dealing skill while you are invuln, you don’t take the direct damage nor the condi damage: you simply don’t take the hit.

That being said, no invuln skill intended to PROTECT you should lock your healing and cleansing skills. It don’t make sense, because it makes way too easy to die due to a simple mistake. And they DO intend Elixir S as a protective measure: that’s why they put it as an auto-proc for low healt in the first place.

As with everything engie, they simply forget to balance it, and now it is incoherent with its initial purpose.

Of course. “Purity of purpose”, all over again.

Yes, I’m aware we don’t know how much that would really improve the development of armor, but in this case, my politeness don’t bright. I don’t care.

I don’t care if it will mean armor will be produced twice as fast or just one hour less that it is actually being made. It will be a win for me anyway, because I don’t buy outfits. I don’t like them for me,I don’t like what they represent (easy, flat, superficial route, instead of the hard, creative, involved one), and I don’t like seeing them in other people (because it is like seeing a generic crowd were all the models are the same).

In what relates to me (This is not objective, we don’t know the reality of this, and from a bussiness POV is always better to sell cheap crap anyway, so all this whining is moot) outfits don’t have any value. ANet could reasign every single resource invested into them to almost any other thing (Better security, new icon art, more lens flare, a new forum, Finnish localization, a new expresso machine in their offices… whatever), and it will be a win for me.
