by auto attacking with d/d and going as glassy as they are tanky

I do that. They…just…heal…

Okay, if I go any more zerker glassy than I am now, I’m literally gonna get one-shot by any class. I need some survivability.

I have managed to kill one guardian recently, but I believe she was just an uplevel, so it wasn’t really a win. She would not even engage me until a zerg was nearby. (Thank goodness for shadow refuge. XD )

No, stop giggling, I’m not making a joke. I’m serious!

How do you kill these heavy armored, heal happy, I-don’t-even-know-why-I’m-chasing-this-guy-halfway-across-the-borderland guardians!? Honestly, by the time their health is low enough to pile a burst combo, they just heal back up….And people complain about thieves being OP in resetting fights…

Yeah, okay, my hits can probably hurt more than the guardian I’m chasing…but still! There’s gotta be some way to kill these armored tanks.

What: Surprise shot (SB stealth attack)
Why: a 900 range skill that immobilizes? Really? Too OP. I’ve caught too many people trying to run away. Stealth and shoot – you don’t even need to waste initiative. Thieves already have it too easy. Drop the range from 900 to 5, make them waste all their initiative if they immobilize a target, and give it a 99.99% of failure, that still drains initiative. That’s more fair.

Oh, and if the skill fails, it immobilizes the thief instead, and adds five stacks of bleeding, poison, and torment.

-jumps up and down- Main mesmer and backstabby thief here! I can offer my amateur advice!

D/D backstab relies heavily on correct timing, from when to stealth and when to move. You really don’t want to skimp on initiatives, so (my assumption) most thieves will save their heartseeker for when they are certain their enemy can get downed. Wasting initiatives when their enemy can’t get downed will just leave a thief vulnerable. (aka, easy to kill these kind of thieves) Until then, heartseeker acts more of a gap closer. Once the thief themselves get to half health, they disengage to heal.

If I can’t start the fight properly, or I’m caught off guard, it can really mess up my timing. Perhaps the best thing to do is to initiate the fight yourself. My build is also a literal ‘glass cannon’ build, and condition damage will eat me alive if I’m not careful. The one time I can recall a condi build really hurting me was when I ran across an elementalist. I had not expected it, and was anticipating an easy kill. But he initiated the fight before I did, waited for me after I used my stealth, then piled condition while staying away from me. D/D is a melee weapon set, and he was ranged, so I was forced to keep disengaged and on the defensive because my health kept at half hp, and he kept moving away from me. If I chased him, I would have just wasted initiatives/life saving utility skills, and with him still at high health, I’d be face to face without any strong offensive attacks.

Most builds that focus on burst damage do not concentrate on condition damage. There is condition, yes, but the main idea is to add as much raw damage as fast as possible. So I might want to swap arcane thievery out for something else. Blink is a nice skill to have, but I’d agree with Vincent and to take Mirror Images instead. Mesmers don’t have as much healing options available if you go for the glass cannon build, but it’s important to keep your health above half – once it goes to half, that is a good time for the thief to pile on bursts.

To be honest, I find interruption skills against thieves to be helpful when playing on my mesmer. Not so much as disabling, because if a thief is crippled or immobilized, they’ll use their stealth or shadowstep. But if you can get a thief to waste their shadowstep, and immobilize them…they’re in trouble.

Also, I have a sylvari mesmer, so if I’m roaming, I don’t carry MI or TW. I use my racial skills, usually either Take Root or Summon Druid Spirit. Mesmer elite are just not that great for roaming IMO. MI takes too long to cast. TW is better off in team fights. In solo, the duration is too short and the cooldown is very long. And Moa? Well…I don’t remember when was the last time I even used that one. My racial skills are better suited for roaming than my mesmer skills.

Never, ever, EVER waste your evades at full health. You’re just giving the thief a chance to trap you without escape skills. Be offensive right away. Interrupt early to throw the thief off, and make them waste their stealth skills. A thief has a lot of options to stealth, but they can run out. Also, if you see the ‘revealed’ icon (after they delivered a backstab) that may be an ideal time to burst them, because they cannot stealth away. And they are right next to you! That is when you can dish out attacks.

I trudged through the jungle with a heavy heart. Nothing I can do would save the city anyway…It wouldn’t have made any difference. I sighed. Like I said, I have no ties to Lion’s Arch, and no reason to help. City never helped me, so I don’t owe it anything. But why did I feel guilty about my decision?

I climbed over the rocky cliffs, avoiding the wildlife that inhabited the jungle. The sooner I returned to Kryta, the sooner I would be with my family again, and the sooner Kristie would get her sight back. My life in Lion’s Arch would be a thing of the past – I wouldn’t need to steal anymore, or sneak around back alleys. I may have to change my name to avoid guards, but I wouldn’t have to be a criminal anymore. Life could be normal again.

I drank in the salty air breeze, climbing over one last pile of rubble and catching a glimpse of Lion’s Arch one last time. It looked so peaceful and quiet now…and tomorrow, it would be filled with chaos. One person couldn’t do anything to save it.

A cold steel blade gently tapped the back of my neck. “No sudden movements…”

I froze. How did I not hear anyone?! I shifted my weight forward, careful not to make it visable. “All right,” I whispered, “you caught me….not!” I lurched forward and landed a sweeping kick at the person behind me. My heel connected to the face of a startled Asuran, but the image shattered into several pinkish shards of magical energy.

My mind reeled. With one hand, I grabbed a dagger as I pressed my other hand to my temple. It felt like a searing white-hot rod had been shoved into my brain, making my senses fuzzy. Confusion. I saw another flash, and a short Asura leaping at me with his blade high. Illusion or not, I couldn’t tell. I dropped low and dodged out of the way – and over the cliff.

My eyes widened in horror, and my lips did not suppress my scream. The jagged rocks below came rushing up to greet me, like sharp teeth ready to snatch up prey.

“You bookah!!” Londatt swore. He rushed to the edge of the cliff, peering down to the sea below. His eyes searched the dark rocks and foaming seawater, finally spotting a mangled form drifting in the sea. He swore again. He watched the dark mass for a long time, waiting for it to move, but it did not rise.

He shut his eyes and heaved a sigh. Finally, he turned around and picked his way down the path that led to the beach below.

I cannot remember if it was IOJ or NSP…but a few days earlier my guild had a group running through their borderlands. We were running around capping stuff, when we came across the BL zerg. It at least twice the size of ours – maybe more, since they were hidden by terrain.

Most of us were edging to turn around. We were far up north in the map, and we would have likely lost a fight from the numbers alone.

Our commander shook his head. “No, come guys, just rally to me. Stack..stack up. Trust me on this. We’re gonna scare them. Now might up, blast finishers, just stand here…”

We rallied together and stood our ground, spamming our fields and blast finishers. The zerg just stood there in the distance, watching. Every one of us was on the edge, waiting for the flood of red names. If they came, we would be dead, but we weren’t going down without a fight.

And then…to our surprise, they turned around and ran away.

We scared away a zerg with blast combos! We knew better than to chase after them – we went back to flipping camps and towers.

Arikyali.5804

Ten hours earlier…

Too soon I realized that leaving via the Asuran gates was a bad idea. There were Lion Guard patrol at every corner. The main entrance was already blocked off, with guards checking each traveler in and out of the city, searching for bombs. The gates were too difficult to monitor, and had been shut off completely. The Asurans who ran the gate were naturally peeved, and an argument broke out between an aggravated Non Lionguard, and irritated Asura. Sadly, the Norn won the argument when he picked up the Asura by the ears and chucked the poor thing into the sea.

I shut my eyes and sighed in annoyance, trying to ignore the cries of outbreak amidst the gateway plaza. How was I to get out now? The Lionguard kept informing the citizens that there was no need for evacuations, and everything was just a precaution. This only made it more difficult…nervous people got rowdy. Rowdy people attracted more guards. More guards meant less chance to escape.

I snuck along the edge of the walls, dropping down to the harbor. My best bet now was to find an abandoned rowboat and…row out in the night.

It’ll be all worth it…I sank to the sand, concealed underneath the boardwalk. Home…finally going home. I just hoped my mother didn’t build a net turret to trap me at the door, the same way she did my dad. Then again, if she did, I couldn’t really blame her.

“Did you hear? We got a Mersuran!” I glanced up at the sailors above the boardwalk. Mersuran…?

“A…what?” another sailor asked in confusion.

“A mersuran! A mermaid asuran!”

“Oh come on. I think we’ve had enough of this whole mermaid fiasco to last us a lifetime.”

I rolled my eyes. I had enough mermaid madness to last me three lifetimes.

After a short rest, I searched the bay for an abandoned rowboat. Thankfully, it did not take me too long to find one. Rowboats were one thing Lion’s Arch had in abundance, aside from thieves and brigands. I climbed in and set off, being extra careful to keep close to the cliff sides to avoid the guards.

I was pleasantly surprised to find not many patrol boats within the water. Most of the Lionguard must have been focused within the city. The few that did guard the harbor entrance were easily avoided with a few stealthy skills. They didn’t pay much attention to an empty rowboat drifting out of the harbor.

I rowed for awhile, using the oars to navigate around the rocky cliffs that surrounded the harbor. By the time I reached the other side, my arms were sore and tired. I left the rowboat by the side of a beach, trudging up toward the jungle. IT was going to be a long trip back home, but at least I could avoid most of the nighttime wildlife with my shadow arts. When morning came, I could find a safe place to rest before figuring out my next plan.

“You foolss!!!”

I froze, recognizing that high pitched shriek all too well. I ducked under a mossy outcropping, peering over just enough to see what was going on. OF all luck…the krait priestess….and pirates.

And the krait didn’t look to happy.

I watched silently, realization of their ploy slowly dawning. I watched in surprise as the cannon went off, killing the priestess, and the pirate captain gloating over his near victory. I sank back below the rocks. There was no denying it…Lion’s Arch was going to be in a lot of trouble.

The sneaky self-preservation side of my brain kicked in. I could easily escape…amidst the distraction of pirates and bombs. I just had to remain hidden until the attack. No one would bat an eye at someone fleeing the city.

But could I allow myself to do it? I might have been a thieving bounty hunter, but I couldn’t just run away and condemn people to their fate.

What did these people ever do for me? I thought bitterly. I would never have come here if Kristie never lost her eyesight. No one gave two bottles of bilgewater for me, or her, or my mother. No one. Centaurs come, kill, and leave. Bandits raided and ran. And pirates just plundered and murdered. No act of charity or kindness came along to help Kristie when she lost her eyesight. No one gave a centaur’s behind when my father died. I was forced to find work among the seedy crowd of Lion’s Arch, and why? So I could hopefully pay the ridiculous amount of gold needed for Kristie’s surgery. That krewe of Asuran did not care how she lost her sight. The people that hired me didn’t care what happened to their victims. And the Lionguard? All they cared about was how many thugs could they get into the gauntlet arena. No one bloody cared.

I don’t owe this city anything…I crept off, slipping into the dark overgrowth of the jungle. And even if I did go back, no one would believe me anyway. They’d just throw me in prison…and I’d die there when the bombs go off.

As far as I was concerned, Lion’s Arch brought this onto itself.

“You foolss!!!” The krait priestess cried. “Our base wasss dissscoverrred and dessstroyed!!"

She reared up, clutching a beautiful golden dagger in her fists, shaking with rage. “Hoow could you have beeen so carelesss?” She hissed. The pirates before her stood unresponsive, making her all the more angry. “Answer me!!” She shrieked.

The captain finally glanced up at the seething krait. A small wry smile turned the corner of his lips. “This can still be salvaged.” He said quietly.

“How!?”

With one glance, the captain nodded to a mess of overgrown ferns. “Kill her.”

The priestess’ eyes widened with realization, whipping around to face the cleverly concealed cannon. All she saw was a blast of gunpowder – she did not even see the cannonball that crushed her skull in, smashing it into the sand.

The pirate captain chuckled softly. “Like any of us ever cared about the ‘sacrifices’ for your pathetic prophets,” he mused.

He reached down, yanking the dagger out of her limp hand. “Oh, this is nice,” he grinned, tucking it into his belt. “All right crew! We’re moving out! Stupid krait didn’t last long enough to die for us in the first wave, but once those bombs go off tomorrow, Lion’s Arch is easy pickings!”

The crew, who had been concealed within the jungle, cheered, raising their swords and pistols up in the air. “Shaddup you salty sea dogs!” The captain barked. “Last thing we need is to blow our cover! Quiet down all of you!”

He grinned, kicking the dead body of the krait priestess. “You krait get the ingredients, the stupid nightmare salads make the bombs, and we reap the benefits. What more could I ask in a business proposal?”

He turned around and walked back into the jungle. “Grab your gas masks crew…when those bombs go off, it’s gonna get ugly.”

No one ever took notice of the young woman far in the distance, concealed behind some mossy rocks. A single soft swear passed her lips, before she sank back into the darkness.

Of course that said, thay’s a 1-2 second advantage each time in favor of the Mesmer. Yes, it does make a difference.

Those 1-2 seconds can help, at least in group fights. That is my experience anyway.

If aesthetics are ‘pay to win’ in GW2, I couldn’t care less. Let it be.

the majority of other cashshop games are pay to win. Imagine GW2 where you can boost your damage in WvW/PvP with a cashshop item. Or a exp booster that doubles what you gain, and lasts for a month. Or increase mystic forge luck with an item from the gemstore. Or ascended material can only be bought with gems. <—Those are ‘pay to win’ perks, and the games that do that die a slow painful death.

I never want to see GW2 turn into a pay to win, and I’m happy they’re not. The cashshop is balanced in the gameplay. I would never have bought GW2 if it was a pay to win.

Playing against a class really is a great way to learn about it. :p

I had been roaming on my thief in WvW, and came across a mesmer. Since my main was mesmer, I could easily pick out the real one among all the clones. Once I had her, ctrl + T, and she was a goner.

Really? That’s all it took me to combat the cornerstone of mesmer roaming tactics? Sure, once or twice I got tricked into attacking the clone instead of her, but…come on. Killing the clones didn’t even hurt! If I lost her, I got her targeted again soon after. And to my surprise, that target stayed.

If she moved, I hit T and there she was. She tries to blink back (staff user), I can see her among her clones. It was only when she used decoy did I lose the target. But…I just watched the clones and found her again. Ctrl + T and she’s running in circles. Again.

I was really looking forward to a challenge with fighting a roaming mesmer. I was sadly disappointed with how easy it was to pick her out of the clones – and keep her targeted. Aren’t I supposed to be confused, at least for a few seconds, as to whom I’m supposed to be fighting? I ran into two mesmers while roaming, and despite both of them being quite commendable, I caught them off guard, instead of the other way around.

So slow...

in Mesmer

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

I want to go roaming in WvW with my mesmer, but I hate how slow the movement speed is! I don’t like roaming with the focus – I’d rather use a pistol. Besides, the speed boost duration from focus is to short.

Are runes really the only efficient way to get increased speed? And those that have it, is the 25% speed boost good enough? To be honest, I’d rather just keep my mesmer to zergs and get another class to roam.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Any class can technically be built into support – but I guess most pick it as a secondary backup choice.

A dungeon run I was in a few days ago was with a party of damage dealers. After we found it wouldn’t work, a few of us switched to our supportive skill sets. We got through the dungeon quickly after that. There are support roles, but everyone takes a bit of the work, instead of dumping all the responsibility on one person.

It’s just cosmetics. When they start adding game breaking items in the gemstore, then I’ll be packing up my bags and leaving. I don’t want to end up in another ‘pay to win’ by skill MMO.

I can think of another popular online game where their cashshop focuses heavily on cosmetics – starts with League and ends with Legends. Yes, there are upgrades available that would help a hardcore player, but they can just as easily be done without.

I love how people are all about how much they liked it and how interested they were in it, but suddenly all that is blown away because a certain NPC turns up.
Seriously?

She basically destroy most of the lores of GW 2 at this point.

People that voted for Kiel hoping to get a Fractal about the Asura and the Inquest. Instead, they got Scarlet. This is after Scarlet mary sue herself in creating lore breaking alliance and act like cartoon villain.

This pretty much sums it up.

Scarlet herself is a great character concept – outside of GW2. Within the lore, she just doesn’t fit. The story loses a lot of its ‘legendary’ ambiance of a fantasy world, with a villain like Scarlet.

By the way, Trahearne > Scarlet

I would pay money/gems for...

First two I wouldn’t mind – they’re cosmetic. Last one is a “buy to win” perk. I don’t want to see Anet fall into that trend. Ever.

Guess who finally got her new armor

Color blue, just like my server’s color for this week’s WvW matchup. Now I need to get some green and red dye next.

It might make more sense if I link this: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Attempting-to-create-a-true-mesmer-build/first

I wasn’t aiming for a shatter build – I just didn’t want to limit myself from shatter utility. But if the confusion stacks are too minimal to do anything significant (especially since I’m not focusing any gear on condition damage), then I’ll just move the 10 points to another trait. I wanted to harass opponents without cutting away from my damage.

And I’m keeping fall damage. I find it too useful to give up.

20 domination – applying vulnerability and great sword boosts
30 dueling – Deceptive Evasion, Confusing Combatants, Phantasmal Fury/Sharper Images, (Blade Training if I get sword)
10 chaos – fall damage reduction
10 illusion – Master of Misdirection/Illusionary Retribution

Not a concrete one-direction build, but a damage-based build that can run for WvW and PvE. It’s just the play style I’m comfortable with, especially since I’m always switching my offhand weapon – it’s usually pistol, but I use all of them for whatever the situation calls for.

I sent a ticket, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed. But if it doesn’t work out, what could I do?

Edit: Nevermind. Anet support is awesome. ^^

I can’t pick. So I’m turning to fellow “mesmerers” to ask.

I’m rebuilding my mesmer (new traits, gears, everything). Right now, I have 20/30/10/0/10 traits, with a greatsword, and a pistol offhand. I’ll have berzerker jewelry and weapons, and I’ll be acquiring a full set of knight armor (or maybe I should get Valkyrie? Can’t pick between the two…). So with all that in mind….

What would compliment this best in your humble opinion? Sword or scepter mainhand? I am more inclined to get the sword.

And hey, any constructive critique would be appreciated.

Just made my silliest mistake in GW2. I bought two Vine of the Pale Tree rings, and did not realize they were both unique. So…now I’m stuck with a ring I can’t wear.

I’d contact support and ask them to refund/unbind the extra ring, but I have a hunch the answer will be “Sorry it happened, but we can’t.” So…if it comes to that, I want to know what’s the best way to salvage this situation.

Could I add two different infusion upgrades and wear both? One WvW, the other normal (Or mystic forge)? I don’t want to make a second silly mistake. :p

I took D/D and P/D in WvW, and really liked it. It feels like I’ll have to relearn combos though, hah. I kept messing up my timing. But at least now I can catch people running away!

Anyhow, I’ve come across another question. Since I dropped refuge while zerging, arrowcarts….hurt. A lot. (I don’t know…I’ve just been able to avoid them with refuge all this time…) Any methods in avoiding AC spam, aside from the obvious ’don’t get hit’?
