Wow, okay. Where to start?

Lol no its not for “elites”. The tier was added simply because getting an exotic set was deemed “too easy”, not that it was only for “elite players”. Its got nothing to do with “bragging rights” and is not a prestige item. Far from it.

Yes it is for ‘elites’ because you can do just fine without ascended. You don’t need it. The only reason people would get it, is because they want it.

If I need to explain it in even more precise detail, and turn this into a text wall, it’s for achievers. Now, I’m not going to take time to check the validity of the Bartle Test based on gamer psychology, but the generalization of getting the ‘best items obtainable’ still stand.

And…where did I ever say it’s prestige? I even said in my last post that the stats were still balanced in comparison to exotics….

And if they are supposed to take a long time to work toward, then explain why the mats are purchasable off the TP hmm? I had an ascended weapon day 2 of the release because I stockpiled mats to get up to 500 crafting, and I had spare gold to buy in the T7 mats required. Nothing “elite” about buying your way to an item.

Explain how you’re going to purchase the mats without first making the money hmmm? You still gotta work for that. Good for you that you planned ahead and got everything you-

Oh wait. Weren’t people in this thread primarily criticizing the amount of work needed to obtain ascended? Whereas you state you took (At least I’ll have to assume this is your intended message) little effort to get your ascended weapon. Which, in your opinion, is not “prestige”.

So…….you’re just telling everyone else that the effort to ascended is not a big issue. If you know the game well enough to stockpile mats, have enough gold, know what to expect on game updates….you can easily prepare the workload for your ascended item. Unlike casual gamers who prefer to play casually. Just as long as you’re not a pure…casual player.

Yeaaaaah that kinda sounds a few steps along the prestige “know your stuff” ladder….

Its the BiS gear, its for everyone to own and use. You are in the wrong game my friend if you think wearing some pink bits makes you somehow “leet” and gives prestige. Particularly as Ive seen a crapload of people already running around with the armor on.

Oh gosh, I think you just skimmed my post and didn’t even try to understand what I said. the ‘leet’-ness came from the effort put in to making the gear. Not the gear themselves.

I said (or at least assumed it was obviously given) that they’re the best so far. You said they are the best so far.

I said they were balanced compared to exotics. You message conveys there’s no greatness to them.

I’ve also seen a lot of people running around with the gear. Heck, I’ve been making a killing off the TP because of these generous people. I could have gone and made my own, but….I’m not a completionist.

The issue as described is not that people cannot get it, its that the method of obtaining it is mind numbingly boring. And people would like a method to attain them that doesn’t involve standing in LA doing nothing at all in the way of content.

Oh, THERE we go. Why couldn’t you just say that in the first place? Goodness.

Didn’t you realize I was quoting someone who said the ‘cost and effort’ is too much, who was in turn quoting someone who states ‘exotics are fine’? All I did was agree with Peter that exotics are fine.

How in the world did that imply ascended = leet?

Is it because I said the effort to get ascended is a bragging right? Just like the effort to get a legendary, or the effort to get exotic, or the effort to learn a dungeon, or ANY effort put in to get ANY type of advancement….is a bragging right? a bragging right that you got game?

“leet” gear and “prestige items”, boy you are funny dude.

I…how did….I didn’t-even…where did I say leet and prestige? All I said was ‘best of the best’ to where YOU said the same! Sheesh.

Oh, and by the way, I’m a lady, thanks.

Exotics still work just fine… >.>

Irrelevant. The last major additions to the game were ascended weapons and armour, doesn’t matter if you ‘need’ it or not, naturally most players will want to get a set or two.

The cost and effort required are really a bit much, imho.

It is relevant. Ascended gear are like legendary – they’re supposed to take a long time to work toward. They’re for the elites who want the best of the best.

Ascended isn’t required for any aspect of this game, nor does it give an insane advantage over exotics. It doesn’t set a border to exclude non-ascended players. It’s balanced. It’s a bragging right that is rightly deserved.

Who still does this?

A true explorer of Tyria right here. -bows- I didn’t do just map completion, I did my best to uncover every single cave, boss, puzzle, secret events, and champ fight there was to have. I’ve discovered a whole bounty of adventure, and even if I go back to an old place, I still find something new.

Heck, I even made my own ‘soloist build’ for PvE exploring up in the mesmer forums. People can keep their ascended gears and time record dungeon runs. I still get a lot more amazed ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ when I drag them out and show em what I found.

I like bolt, but it just doesn’t feel ‘mesmery’ enough.

I guess an example would be my current GS, with the Zenith skin. It doesn’t look like a real sword – it’s made of several golden crystals held together by energy, collapsing when sheathed and expanding when drawn. The Bolt effects are nice, but electricity doesn’t match a mesmer.

Kill the Queensdale champion train.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

The biggest issue with the champ train is the image it gives to newbies.

1. The zerg can get rude and nasty if a champ is killed too early. That is NO ONE’S fault. The champ is there for anyone to kill at any time. It’s not dictated to belong to the zerg. And what about people who like to solo champs, like me? If zergs want to claim ownership with “don’t like it, tough. Don’t play it.” Then I’m gonna answer “Fair dibs. I kill it early. Don’t like it, tough. Don’t play it.”

2. To new players, it makes GW2 look like a ‘zergfest’ game when there is so much more to offer. This is just grinding for drops. Isn’t this game supposed to denounce grinding?

3. It teaches players that zerging is the only viable option to this game. That brings them to WvW and only WvW. (And to people who think WvW zerg is the only endgame, you’re missing a lot of good stuff). And before anyone tries to counter me, I like WvW. But I also like roaming, soloing, dungeons, meta events, fractals, PvP, world completion, etc. Compared to all that, zerging is BORING.

No one complains about the champ train in Frostgorge when it’s practically the same thing. But that’s a level 80 map. It doesn’t interfere with newbies. We don’t have champ trains in Metrica Province, Caledon Forest, or any of the other starting areas.

I have two nominations.

First one is Kimvalodij.2031. He’s been my friend way before we joined GW2, and he’s always been able to help out anyone who needed help. Let it be a guildie, a friend, a newbie, or even a stranger, he’s always been there to lend a hand. He’ll always come through when someone asks him for assistance, and he doesn’t ask for anything in return. Recently I sent him a Christmas gift of a new set of armor and jewels, since he needed them. He returned the kindness with gifts that were worth way more than the stuff I gave him. We’ve actually ended up in a little war where we try to outgive each other, and curse it all, he’s winning. This contest may be the only way I can send him gold, since he’d likely refuse it from me – even if I probably have more gold than him…

My second nomination is Sophiera.1209. She’s one of the many writers from the Warning Bouy (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Warning-Buoy/first). It’s a community-driven, epic tale of a mermaid’s adventures in Lion’s Arch. During one of the chapters, I needed to get a screenshot of my thief with a torch. I knew of one location where I could get the item, but I did not have the area explored on my thief. She hopped over ingame and helped me get there all the way (despite a few wrong turns here and there ;3 ). Even if we couldn’t get the event started, it was a great help to have gotten to the location in the first place. My thief was never set up for PvE, so it would have been quite difficult for me to do it alone. I not only got a torch, but a firey minion summon as well (due to one of the wrong turns. ).

its very possible, i have 800 gold all made with crafting and like 10 gold starting capital from leveling :p

Please do share your divine knowledge, cause I never made any profit ever.

haha you see, thats no something ill do cause then i will make less profit cause more people will demand the resources i need, and even less profit cause those people will also undercut me. i will tell you this though.

lets take omnomberry pie at this time:
you can sell omnomberry pies at 4s at the moment.

to make an omnomberry pie youd have to buy 1 omnomberry from the trade post, 1 butter from the TP, 1 lemon (karma, in bulk), 1 sugar;starch;flour;water each for 8c (10 for 80 copper or 8c a piece).
lets add it together:
omnomberry: 2s06c
butter: 48c
lemon: 0c (karma)
sugar: 8c
starch: 8c
flour: 8c
water: 8c
———————————————————
2s86c total to craft omnomberry pie
it sells for 4s00c right now, but you also have to consider the 15% tax soooo:
4s00c * (100 -15) / 100 = 3s40c money in your pocket, if you sell it for 4s00c

to sum up, it costs 2s86c to craft omnomberry pie, and you make 3s40 per pie, so that is 54 copper profit right there. now making one pie is kinda silly i know, but consider making a stack of pies. thats 250*54 copper, that is 1g35s00c profit. now if you do this every day, and with more then one profitable recipe, eventually you will get to 800g.

protip: look into google spreadsheets and gw2trade.com’s api system, mix both up and you might be able to keep track of ALL interesting recipes at once without having to spend hours calculating each day!

Shhh! Stop sharing all the marketing secrets!

Split (don't kick) Dungeon Parties

Don’t forget there are two kinds of pugs. These dungeons are designed for certain levels, and anyone higher is downleveled. GW2 dungeons are meant so anyone at THAT level can run them. If they’re at the appropriate level, they shouldn’t be getting kicked just for not being 80.

Now if they’re leeching, or you’re running a dedicated farming party, that’s a difference. Those are the pugs I don’t want to waste my time for. Level 50 in AC? Fine. Level 20 in fractals? Out.

Defending Trahearne - might not be his fault

in Personal Story

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

Everyone dislikes the poor guy, saying he stepped in and took the limelight. I can see how that is unless you’ve played from a Sylvari’s point of view, when you meet him as early as the second part of your personal story.

But…what if it’s not Trahearne’s fault that he is such an unlikable character? I had my second Sylvari go through the personal story, and found some interesting dialogue.

The Sylvari storyline with the Orders of Tyria involves the task of retrieving the sword Caladbolg. It’s considered to be a living weapon, where it enhances the qualities of its wielder – strength, honor, wisdom, bravery, etc. This goes true for negative qualities as well. The second owner of the sword, Waine, was considered a coward, and that quality was only enhanced by wielding the sword. He was arrogant and selfish. He also gets very intimidated when put in a situation the sword couldn’t fight him out of.

After Caladbolg was retrieved, the Pale Tree eventually gave it to Trahearne.

But does this mean Trahearne was just a glory-stealing, overly prideful shrub the whole time? Nope, I don’t think so.

Trahearne is a meek scholar. Before he got the sword, he doesn’t want to fight. Quoted directly from the story dialogue: “My knowledge of the undead will be useful, but I’m no general. I’ll follow behind, and revive those who fall.”

Follow behind. The main character. And remain out of sight. He’s just there to assist. My Sylvari gets to run into the army of undead, swinging Caladbolg with a fearsome battle cry, and lead an army of Vigil Soldiers to victory.

Trahearne was always there to assist. He never liked fighting undead. When he goes to Orr, he observes them from a distance. And he definitely doesn’t like taking a lead role in battle. Before he got the sword, whenever the subject of ‘taking charge’ came up, he tries to come up with explanations that he’s just a scholar, not a fighter.

So, by that logic, it doesn’t make sense, does it? He shouldn’t have turned into what many people see as an overbearing general. But consider this:

His Wyld Hunt was considered impossible. He was supposed to cleanse the land of Orr, and make it livable again. But at that time it was believed that there was no cure. Even if the dragons were defeated, he’d never accomplish his destiny. He was quiet and meek by nature, but he had one overriding quality: he was stubborn and headstrong. Despite an impossible hunt, he kept up his research on Orr. Despite his dislike of fighting undead, he assists when needed. And he has a heckuva strong sense of honor. He’ll go out of his comfort zone just to do what is morally right.

His nature of soliditary makes him unable to connect to the main player. He joins you out of a mix of guilt and sorrow after you lost your mentor, and does his best to assist you. This is all before receiving the sword, and before the Pale Tree tells Trahearne that he must accompany the player to help stop the Dragon’s Corruption (to which he again insists he’s just a simple scholar).

And now he receives the sword that enhances his qualities. Just like before, he moves out of his comfort zone to do what’s needed, and take the position of general. Giving out orders comes from the undenied fact that he knew what was the strongest blow against the undead. But he still needed to ask a seasoned adventurer on the proper course of action, when it came to delivering that blow. He’s not after the glory at all, he’s only trying to do what is asked of him – be a hero.

Yes, he was asked to be a hero. He was asked by the Pale Tree. He was asked by every Sylvari that look up to a Firstborn. He was asked by his Wyld Hunt. He was asked by destiny. And when you have a prophesy dangling over your head, that adds a lotta pressure.

There is a prophetess in Rata Sum who said that the return of Caladbolg would be the Dragon’s downfall.

He never intended to steal glory. He just needed all the good rep he could scrape together to appear like a competent general. He had to show he was capable. If he did not, the Pact would have fallen apart, and the Elder Dragons would never have been defeated.

Caladbolg helped him find the inner strength to overstep his boundaries, increase his sense of honor, and increase his tenacity to continue an impossible Wyld Hunt. But it also increased his solitary nature. It increased his ‘Firstborn-mentor’ quality (which to a non-sylvari, would be overbearing).

It’s just a shame he’ll never be able to open up and tell you all this, because you’ll just see him as a needy plant that can’t take the pressure to lead the Pact. He’s probably eager for an understanding friend, when he’s so far away from his kin in an unforsaken land.

There are some mechanics added that have made it easier (if you die the npc spawns with you. Before they would stay dead) but it feels like they just nerfed the difficulty of the personal story.

I hear everyone saying how terrible rangers are in everything, but that can’t be true. I know there are good rangers out there. Saying the ranger class is bad, must be like saying the thief class is OP. Ridiculous statements.

1. I want to have a fernhound as my main pet. Is this viable? I’ve heard that the fernhound is preferred as a secondary pet.

3. I’ve seen other rangers send their pets to their doom to save themselves. But I’m a softie who doesn’t want to condemn my cute and loyal virtual pet to that fate. Would I end up having to rely on this tactic…?

4. LB feels more like a PvP weapon and SB for PvE. Is this the general idea?

5. What is a ranger strong in? Where do they really shine? Dungeons, pvp, WvW, fractals, boss fights….which one?

If that is the case, Exotic (Exquisite) Jewels shouldnt be able to be put into the mf.

Doesn’t work, I tried it. Since it works with all jewels, my first guess is that it’s some kind of secret Mystic forge potion.

I saw this thread, actually. But if it was to be used with the Captain’s Council Commendation, it should at least allow two more jewels to be dropped in. I think I also read in an older thread that this quirk still existed before that event item came out. I can’t find the link to double check how old that is though.

Here’s my reasoning: Staff is only picked up for utility, and my main offhand choice is pistol. However, I don’t like the quip design. The other offhands are also picked mainly for utility, so the torch and focus legendary are pretty much out. That pretty much left me with the sword or greatsword.

Edit: Why did I think focus = scepter? Eh. Focus is great, but I really want the legendary to be on my main hand.

I think before spending anything on “expensive” gear, you should decide what type of build you want to play. So, where are you playing for end game? PvE? WvW? You’ll typically want different builds for different areas. Again, speaking for myself, I’m leaning toward using my mes only in WvW, and use my warrior for all PvE content. But take your time. No need to rush it when it will take you a long time just to get the “generic” legendary gifts.

This mesmer is mostly for PvE. That goes for dungeons, fractals, world map, etc. Only WvW would come from zerging, so all I’d really need to focus on is utility.

And you all do have a fair point. I’ll just start working on the shared half of legendary items. Where did Anet say about new legendary acquisition? I did not hear of that before.

Part of the reason I don’t have a legendary yet, is because I don’t know which one to work towards. I want my first legendary to be for my mesmer, but I don’t know which one to choose.

I’ve narrowed it down to either Bolt, or one of the greatswords. But none of them look quite ‘mesmery’. And if I go for a greatsword, I would very much prefer Eternity just because of the effects – and it fits with my mesmer. (yes, I’d be willing to make it despite the cost of being two separate legendary weapons).

Arikyali.5804

…Do people realize how expensive it is to buy gold and become ‘pay to win’ in this game?

Dropping a few dollars a month is fine. It’s not going to destroy gameplay. If you’re making so much money that your spending becomes gamebreaking, you’re probably already working a career that takes a chunk of your life and likely don’t have the time to ‘work’ up to those high end stuff anyway.

You can’t buy skill in this game. Boosts are nice but not necessary. Cosmetics are nice but not necessary. Anything in the gem store is nice to have, but NOT a necessity to advance gameplay. And if you’re going to argue about ‘buying gold’ to get gear you want, well…anyone who is just bad at gameplay will fail, no matter how many exotics and legendary weapons they buy. There is nothing exclusive with real money that cannot be obtained without money.

And if you wanted to, you can buy gems with ingame gold! the gemstore is not exclusive to paying customers!

Having the common language as their second language is a good point, but the skritt in LA are still strategic (the one in the market for example). And that requires intellect.

I spotted two skritt in LA talking about an ‘above ground’ market and an ‘under ground’ market. Not word for word, but their conversation was something like this:

“Did you go to the market today?”
“Which one? The one above or the one below?”
“I don’t go to the one below. And neither do you!”
“Oh, uh…I was getting my lice treated.”

And skritt go to the sewers, so maybe that is where this underground market is – and this skritt gathering. So it stands to reason there really is an underground city in LA…

Perhaps they don’t need just skritt around them to be more intelligent, other sentient beeings may have thesame effect on them.
So skritt living in a crowded multicultural area like Lions Arch could be intelligent because there are simply a lot of people there.

That a realty cool idea and changes to a hive mind more of a if a person is near other ppl who are smart they too become smarter. In a way that a lot like how humans work.

I think the Asura are going to disagree with that statement…they’ll say there are too many dumb skritt in their surrounding areas that they simply can’t be leeching off the ‘hive mind’ of the intelligent Asura.

To me, ‘pay to win’ is needing to buy items from the cashshop in order to progress in the game at any decency. With that in mind, GW2 is certainly not pay to win. The items in the store are nice to have, but they are by no means a necessity.

Would you rather drop in personal time or real money to get your legendary? As long as you don’t need a legendary to run dungeons you’re fine. This is a game where you can’t buy skill to succeed.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Arikyali.5804

Fact: Skritt are known to be more intelligent when amassed in groups. Their IQ increases in proportion to the amount of skritt in the surrounding area.

Observation (1): The skritt living in small groups out in the wild speak plainly with little variety in their vocabulary. Their well known phrases are grammatically incorrect.

“More come yes?”
“You ran from Skritt!”
Etc.

This usually comes from hostile Skritt – who are intent to steal ‘shinies’. However, friendly skritt seem to speak in a slightly more constructive language. (At least the ones able to be negotiated with). And such skritt are usually intent to trade with adventurers for the ‘shinies’ instead of outright steal them.

Conclusion: The smart skritt that amass in groups are more inclined to speak proper grammar, and tend to take interest in trade.

Now…

Observation (2): Let’s look at Lion’s Arch. We have skritt living there. But have you heard them converse? The one near the Black Lion merchants is driving the human trader crazy with her marketing tactics. Two skritt by the square speak in proper grammar, and have a broader range of vocabulary. These are examples of very intelligent skritt, and one of them is interested in the market.

Query: Where the heck are all the other skritt in LA? There’s gotta be a whole underground city of smart rodents to match the other skritt’s intellect. Where in the world could that many skritt be hiding?

What did this poor Skritt in the Lion’s Court ever do to deserve an endless hail of snowballs? Oh right, today’s daily insists on hitting a skritt 10 times with a snowball. But instead of defending the dolyaks from the thieving skritt that actually deserve a face full of snow, our fearless adventurers decided to pick on this helpless innocent little guy. For shame.

The poor thing must be traumatized. He’s cold, wet, and shivering. Have you no heart? I tried to call the Lion Guards to stop this unfair onslaught, but my pleas were ignored. Everyone seemed eager to keep pelting him to the point he can’t stay upright for two seconds.

Toypocalypse Special Extended Edition

Toypocalypse is so far my favorite Wintersday mini game, so I totally vouch for the idea. It does get redundant after you’ve set up all the necessary defenses, but increased difficulty would make up for it.

I’ve noticed this too. I can usually get near-perfect scores, but it’s getting trickier to do so. It’s more like a ‘lag bug’ since I don’t lag in any other aspect of wintersday games.

I’m surprised Scarlet hasn’t high-jacked the toys yet and made a “screaming golem princess.” That would be a nightmare.

Princess golems?

The horror.

Beware! Anakysha, your neighborly Wintersday thief, is here! May the merriment and cheer begin! If I spot any naughty Skritt running around Lion’s Arch, I’ll pelt them with snowballs with my trusty slingshot!

After I sneakily help myself to a few ‘misplaced’ gifts that dropped from escorting Dolyaks, of course.

Thief how to win..

kittenter the easiest way to kill thieves is turn them into moa then burst.
Yesterday I’ve found a thief that was almost all the time invis, I tought they nerfed this stuff but apparently it still work (or maybe another build with the same result).

the only thing they nerfed was perma-stealth, which was overkill. A thief can still have a stealthy build, but now it’s not a cheap win.

Princess dolls. I. Hate. Them.

I grin evilly when they’re bombarded by snowballs during toypocalypse. That’s the only time I want to hear them cry.

Eh, just don’t farm for it, so when you do get stuff you’ll be pleasantly surprised. all the good loot I got came when I wasn’t looking for it.

(On that note, a friend of mine bought 400 gifts and got the permanent Christmas bell. I was very jelly)

Is it official? No extra minis this year?

Before I drop all my ugly wool stuff for wintersday boxes, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that maybe, just maybe Anet will patch in the mini frames. I know we can get them from the meta, but I wanted more than just one mini. >.<

I missed my chances last year, so I was hoping to get them this year.

How are you making money?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Arikyali.5804

I don’t actually try to make money. I’m self sufficient enough that I can craft whatever I need. If I need more materials, I just buy them on the TP, and slowly sell whatever I don’t want.

If I really need money, I do dungeon runs, or find a niche in the market for my crafting skills.

I ran with an engineer once. It was pure fun.

Really, anyone who knows what they’re doing is fun to run along with in WvW.

Being able to stack is wrong

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Arikyali.5804

Arikyali.5804

My only issue with stacking is that it makes combat so much more simple. Tough mob fight? Stack in a corner and spam. There’s no effort.

I get people want fast dungeon runs, and to make a lotta money, but wouldn’t it be best to reward that gamestyle to people who can do more than fight in a corner? Stacking is just too easy for someone who claims to be a ‘skilled dungeon runner’ because let’s face it, it’s not hard at all.

We don’t need collision detection – we just need boss fights that make meta stacking not-always effective, and encourage players to actually move. Stacking is a pretty good strategy for certain fights, but when it becomes overly effective for too many dungeons, it’s just cheating.

Scepter/torch is a great condi set. Have you tried the staff? It’s also a strong condi weapon. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/List-Find-your-Mesmer-Builds-Guides/first This is the list of mesmer builds, but if you want something unique, you’ll have to make one based on your playstyle. But at least that list can give you a few ideas.
