I think we’re okay and the system is perfectly tuned.

You’re not supposed to NEVER get hit (although you can if you combo/trait solely for this), and some things are just meant to hit you. Otherwise there would be no need for toughness.

Most of the unreasonable damage you take is from something you’re supposed to avoid.
If you understand and know a fight perfectly, with well timed Blinds and Blocks it becomes even… trivial.

I think they developed the professions (guessing here, since I haven’t played any other profession extensively as I did with Guardians) not with a “if they use everything, they’ll have fair chances of succeed”, but rather a “if they use the least they have, they’ll succeed”.
This means anyone using their abilities a bit more than average should have an easier time than others.

I agree but this seems to only apply to the Guardian Class from what I’ve seen. We only have one invulnerability so our timing must be impeccable. While others, have it a little easier.

To an extent I see how they implemented the least amount used for more success.

Right but like I stated earlier, most skills utilize multiple hits where the blinds/aegis does almost nothing to help. This is especially true since when you’re blinded, there’s a pretty obvious notification you are in that state.

This isn’t so much about builds but the way the skills assist in our survivability. Again, getting a free miss on one attack doesn’t seem like much.

It is very powerful, I don’t think anyone here is denying it. If you get moaed while fighting a mesmer 1v1, you’re pretty much screwed. And it can be tough to dodge if you don’t keep your eye on him/her among the 3 clones. This is especially true if you’re in the heat of a large fight with at least 5 people.

It heals for a little over 1k. I find that if I waited a second after activating it, it would go off and work as intended. Spamming it on the other hand, i’m not 100% sure.

Hey guys, I just wanted to open a discussion about the survivability on the Guardian. As most of us know, we have access to blinds and a few blocks with a bubble. Now if anyone has ran some numbers or whatever the case is based on this, let me know. I find the current state of blinds and Aegis to be a little lackluster. Blocking one attack in a game where a lot of the skills utilize numerous strikes almost makes me find these two abilities to be neutralized fairly quickly.

I’m not asking for anything too powerful but maybe a change to these in some form. Maybe make Aegis block a specific amount of damage related to your toughness or some other stat? Maybe also make blinds stack in intensity so you miss multiple times. It just seems like having only one attack miss you, especially since Auto-attacks are going off most of the time, it feels a little lacking compared to invulnerability. I get we have bubbles but unlike invuls, these can be ignored with stability.

Again, this is a discussion on what some of you think of the current system and maybe a change to it or why we should keep it. Please lets keep this discussion reasonable.

It works but the issue is if you hit it too fast, it might not work. I’ve done this before and i’m not sure if the skill was pulled off or not since the heals you receive are very fast. If you slow it down, it’ll work.

I see what he means and I understand, it’s not like you can pull out 10k damage in a split second with the GS as a Guardian.(100b+frenzy) It’s a decent weapon still.

Moa is an effect, so condition removal does nothing.

In a 1v1, Moa is /shrug. If you have a good chasedown game it can auto-win any 1v1 (since the opponent will be running and dodging until it expires). If you don’t, it’s meh.

Against Necro/Guardians it can break them (it rails transform abilities). Against Thieves it can shut down their escape (ability-based escape chains).

So it’s still pretty good 1v1 even though it’s overrated by players who don’t know how to manage their endurance or use line of sight.

It’s not a terribly overpowered skill though. It can be tough to dodge if you don’t keep your eyes on the mesmer but if you get hit, you’re sort of screwed since your endurance is probably going to go along with some of your health.

Can you please buff the scepter?

The only thing I would change is make the Scepter faster and have the immobilize increased to maybe 3 seconds. Two is way too short for a ranged skill. Other than that, great weapon.

I would get rid of blind exposure and blinding jeopardy and replace them with Signet mastery and inner fire. Guardians don’t really utilize vulnerability since we can’t stack it very well.

Are you kidding me? Our underwater skills are the best skills we have on both fronts.

Area heals, vulnerability on hit, KD, aoes, bubble, pulls with fire.

Don’t forget that we have no cripples so it’s relatively easy to get away from us. Also, no escape mechanisms what-so-ever. We can’t run away from a fight at all, once we’re committed, that’s it. Teleporting to a target isn’t the same thing as keeping them within distance afterwards. There will be plenty of balancing throughout the games life so it’s not a huge deal.

The reason Blurred Frenzy is so low-CD is simply that a Mesmer is not really capable of standing in melee range. Without it.

All our other options are ranged, for a reason.
We need the 2s invulnerability every 8s/10s so that we can dodge the enemies’ worst attacks with it, since we cannot otherwise survive melee combat much.

But that applies to all classes. If you’re not specced for damage mitigation, you’ll get smacked. Having skills completely mitigate damage while saving your endurance is huge.

I’m just not understanding how one can complain about the “balance,” when the ability to completely avoid damage on such a short cd is just that. Other classes have similar abilities but on much longer cool downs(90s on endure pain). Granted you can move, but the point is it’s not spammable. It would make more sense to add maybe confusion instead of invulnerability.

And how do you mean they become weaker as more people enter the fight? If anything, they get stronger since you’ll be lost in the crowd more and even skilled players will probably go after targets they can see before anyone else.

Agreed with most of the sentiments in this thread. The #1 if sped up a little bit, would be perfect. It really feels slow and in a game where constant movement is vital, the symbol doesn’t really warrant a slow strike.

You can pretty easily walk away from this ability.

You can, but it’s been used to complete negate strong skills and other attacks, even though it’s not the intention. An invul for 3 seconds guarantees it’ll be spammed just to avoid damage instead of dodging.

Yes but remember, all classes can spec into toughness. This isn’t the one thing Guardians are exclusive to, same with Retaliation.

I never said I was dying. I was just giving my input on the current play style. Virtue of Resolve is pretty much spammable when you and your party are a bit down on health anyways.

Sanctuary is also nullified from stability, wall of reflection is easily passable, Shield of the avenger is also passable. You’re not taking into account the simplicity it takes to just walk through and continue fighting while your skills are on cd.

There’s absolutely no way. Toughness does nothing to defend against conditions and while we have many removal abilities, you won’t be able to dispel them all. And please tell me what defensive abilities when compared to the rest? Shield of wrath blocks three attacks which is relatively easy to break with either quickness or short AA. Shield of Absorption? Doesn’t do a thing against stability and leaves you vulnerable for that duration. Healing abilities such as VoR? Maybe 100 a tick with a nice active but once it’s on cd…then what?

This isn’t to bash the profession but ask what in comparison makes it on par or even better?

When you introduce mechanics such as invulnerability, the concept of “using your health to defend yourself is the worst thing you can do” is thrown out the window because it is, in fact, the best thing to do. Why bother wasting your dodge meter when you can just pop endure pain, blurred frenzy and so forth.

First and foremost, aegis and resolve don’t make up for more than an 8k loss in health compared to the warrior. one miss doesn’t justify it.

Aegis isn’t even great in small scale confrontations. It only takes one hit to neutralize it. Is this so hard to get? You make it seem like it absorbs or blocks even medium amounts of damage/attacks.

I say keep the VoJ active as it is, the passive could use a little bit of tweaking. Maybe make it every 3 shots? It only lasts a second so I don’t think it would be terrible. VoR passive isn’t that great, I’d like to see it buffed a little bit so people actually keep it on instead of spamming it for the instant heal. VoC definitely needs a change, give it a set amount to be absorbed not just one attack. People need to realize that blind and aegis aren’t exactly excellent deterrents of damage.

The reason our damage is so low is because our defense is really high, and we are very supportive. If you want to dual wield then this class isn’t for you anyway, you should probably play a Warrior if you want something like that. Guardians can’t dual wield for the same reason Paladins can’t in WoW. They try to be more defensive and supportive of others, and someone who dual wields would be very offensive and intimidating. A Guardian is more calm and honorable in battle, and dual wielding is a bit relentless and just clumsy.

High defense how? We have no skills that let us become invulnerable in combat aside from renewed focus. Shield of wrath gets burned down too quickly, the only viable option is shield of absorption which is negated with stability. Blind doesn’t count since it can easily be ruined by any attack.

I would suggest those that find justice or resolve to be ‘weak’ to invest in some +condition and/or +healing gear. You will notice the difference.

And for the ‘change aegis’ guy, you don’t really know how it works. It completely blocks any attack (and any condition with that attack). Aegis is incredibly powerful, in truth. Giving it a damage absorb instead would be a nerf.

By doing that you sacrifice health and toughness. Since the Guardians health is already one of the lowest, it’s very hard to justify it.

Blind doesn’t stack in intensity(multiple stacks) so it won’t guarantee you the ability to avoid fast and powerful damage. Auto attack will dissipate it quickly.

I think some of you are missing the point of the virtues. Passive VoJ is very underwhelming. You’d be better of popping it on cd. Courage is tied with blindness, a simple AA completely mitigates it. I think a set value absorbed might be better.

Hi guys! Just thought i’d give my thoughts on the current state of the Guardian profession based mainly on structured pvp. Well, here goes!

Pros:

-Fairly decent direct damage. Especially true if you equip the 1h sword.
-Multiple ways of mitigating attacks through blinds and bubbles.
-Ability to quickly shorten the distance between you and your target

Cons:

-Less damage than a Warrior and lower Survivability due to low health tier.
-Unable to mitigate large, multiple hitting skills due to blind only blocking one attack.
-Unable to spec properly into condition damage due to the short duration of burning.
-Even after you are able to close the distance, you’re unable to keep them there due to lack of cripple or long standing immobilization.
-Lack of escape mechanisms.(ride the lightning, stealth, Whirlwind or rush)
-Current Elite skills have been nearly useless due to long cast times and lack of stability to finish them.
- Lack of a real ranged weapon. Scepter is still very slow and easily dodged.

I know there’s a long list of cons compared to the pros but let me explain. I’ve played most of my time in spvp because that’s just what I find fun. Anytime I go into a fight, I can’t retreat. There’s nothing in my arsenal that lets me make a tactical retreat to regroup and come back. Also, mitigating damage has been is a lot less effective compared to say, “Endure Pain” or even Blurred frenzy which puts out a lot of damage while leaving you invulnerable on a short cool down(10 seconds). Anytime I flash to my target, if they’re relatively decent player, will cripple me leaving me to do nothing but burn my utilities to keep it off me only to have it put back on. While blind is excellent on paper, combine it with other professions ability to apply quickness,(guardian doesn’t have) it takes nothing short of a simple AA to make it almost useless.

This post isn’t to bash the Guardian because it’s by far my most favorite concept. I just think the execution has been lackluster. Granting the profession the lowest health tier due to fast dissipating bubbles and easily mitigated blinds seems nothing short of ridiculous. After the recent change to the Tomes of courage/wrath, it’s nearly impossible to utilize the skills true power. Granted before it was easy with stability but now it’s become a chore and it’s much easier to just spam the 1 skill. Maybe cut the heal in half and keep stability or lower the cast time?
