Once you start arguing semantics you might as well shut up.
So Anet said there will be no grind according to their definition of grind.
Which is different from the definition everybody else uses, and would also make other MMOs grind free if applied to them.
Better go enjoy your grind free MMO lol.
Yeah a lot of items have effects that make the game incredibly annoying and overloaded.
I have absolutely no idea why these things dont just get standard effects and models just like armors do when you scale down Graphics.
Open sandbox mmos last longer unless you have pvp that keeps players busy like C9 or massive grind and RNG is present also like C9. The closest thing to this is WvW but it’s siege focus and you don’t farm there plus other stuff. Lineage 1-2 definitely made it even tough second one screwed up the first is still most played in Korea and the upcoming Lineage Eternal is creating hype,BDO failed at it, so yeah theme parks need expansions but part of the population unsubscribes or stops playing due easily burned content.
It happens in WoW,GW2 and other theme parks, the PvP here isn’t as great and engaging compared to previous and current mmos. That’s why they want Esports and will have to keep doing expansions to remain relevant. People saying open PvP in PvE is bad and creates bad population you are in denial, it creates the best kind of social experience of course as long the system supports it, if it was for PvP only I wouldn’t have left C9 but everything else drove me away, GW2 has a special kind of theme park.
Don’t disrespect Lineage 2 unless you like instant rewards even with the grind aspect of C9 or Vindictus I felt rewarded when I got those perfect mats, master gear, finished all rounds of survival to get my unique necklaces.
It’s the journey and the treasure, here well just go EotM or use them scrolls.some people like to be able to do their pve without having to worry about an enemy player killing you for not l337 players the mobs are plenty difficult most of the time (course world bosses are easier due to the huge number of players)
Social ties, if you want to pve safely carry a pvp group with you most likely guildies, that promotes actual ties between and promotes active group play,PK karma system exist, it creates a good relation between crafter, pkers, farmer, merchants etc. instead of karma train,PPT WvW,Conquest pvp messing other modes etc. It also gives player constant goals that keeps them playing because they can affect others progress if they outsmart them, they only leave if their enemies do or the game becomes the opposite of what it was.
That’s the best social system in mmo, theme parks like GW2 with linear progression need the devs to constantly add expansions that everyone knows will not suffice and players will go back to pvp or just farming endlessly. It is anti-casual so it makes the game grow naturally Lineage 1 & 2 are still heavily played just like Eve Online, those are old games by standard, those who like instant and easy rewards don’t stay for long they jumped between games unless you have something others don’t WvW is big one for me as well as a unique PvPstyle, PvE only won’t make a game last.
Perfect is an opinion but not longevity potential.
A very nice post.
A lot of people forget that Eve online is 10 years old and has been constantly growing over all of these years. And while Lineage 2 has many inofficial sequels like Aion, its still one of the largest MMOs in the world.
The social ties and metagame of pvp centric open world MMOs are much thicker, because trust is actually very important in these games.
If you have to be careful who you trust, who you play with, you develop much richer social ties to your fellow players and ultimately become much more drawn to the game than you would be drawn into an anything goes casual MMO like GW2.
This comes obviously at the cost of growth rates, after all not much people are willing to take it slow and tolerate the loss of exp or ships like in L2/Eve.
Well there is a Quaggan village in the harbor of LA, but its empty afaik.
There are also villages with only minor problems such as food.
But then again, maybe Quaggans are just tasty.
If you are tasty and pacifist, well…
Maybe we’ll get Quaggan steaks or something with the addon.
Elementalist is just a very bad class for new players.
You have low hp, low sustain, all you can do to survive is use the correct traits and utilities which a new player probably doesnt know.
Especially with the NPE changes that give you traits only much later and make you unlock them one by one (which means no easy trying out traits) some classes are really punishing to level for inexperienced players.
The main problem is that classes arent balanced for solo pve/leveling.
Anet obviously wont change that, so I’d just recommend any new players stay the hell away from Mesmers and Eles.
Guards and Thieves are well balanced for pve, while Warriors, Necros and Rangers just sleepwalk through content even if you have no idea wtf you are doing.
Right now I’d say Eve and maybe Lineage 2 give people a lot of options and most importantly: open world pvp.
Lineage 2 .. really ? The most grindy game ever where you have to camp at a spot
for 10 hours to get 1% exp .. and loose 5% exp on every death .. so yeah a lot of
PvP will of course let you play forever if you don’t want to end up as a level 5 again.Oh .. i forgot to mention that you could actually level down from deaths.
Whining about how harsh a game is still doesnt change the core of the game.
Lineage2 offers a lot of sandbox features, you can actually claim Cities with your guild and have a lasting impact on the world.
Unlike GW2 which opens a temporary map whenever needed and closes them whenever it gets empty and ultimately has no persistent elements at all.
Which is twice as horrible if you consider that most high end maps have complex meta events which would work really well with persistent maps.
Signet of Might +2 team utilities is perfectly fine for pve.
I run it with 2 (healing) shouts and it works well.
The other common argument is that it’s not grinding because you can pick from a variety of grinds. You can run Champ Trains, WvW, Dry Top, and/or Silverwastes. Sorry, but all that crap is the same to me: repetitive, mind numbing, and only fun for about 45 minutes. LIke the title of this thread says, “Grind is Grind.” Just because you have 4 different forms of grind to pick from doesn’t make it “not grind.”
BUT, it doesn’t fit into what the developers define grind as. I also agree with what Anet defines it as. The fact that you can do anything to get rewards that progress you towards any end game goal you set for your self makes it not a grind. If that is the case any activity you do in game is a grind, which is a stupid way of looking at it. Some activities are more rewarding than others so you can find more efficient ways to get to that end goal quicker, but that goes to the self imposed repeating of content.
It is all circular arguments here when there is no grind in this game, unless you consider playing the content as a grind. If that is the case find other content to play.
And don’t cry about there being a gold standard, I for one am grateful there is a solid currency that hasn’t been destroyed. There is nothing less realistic than a living breathing world without a solid currency. Good currency = better immersion.
Grind is repeating content over and over to farm its rewards.
So yes eventually everybody goes full grind mode in MMOs, simply because these games cant possibly produce new content fast enough.
Anet also doesnt understand this.
What Anet means is: you do not need to farm to unlock content (which is true, you can do any kind of content without preparation in GW2).
That does not mean there is no grind in the game, you just grind for different reasons.
But that doesnt make any difference. If you grind for items with slightly better stats or if you grind for items with a really nice skin doesnt matter.
You are still grinding.
Sand box MMORPGs are becoming real popular and I would like to see some type of creativity come to GuildWars in the near future. I think that this is trend that most future games may fallow and for this game to compete with ather games they will need to start looking into how to add this to the game. Sure not everyone likes building stuff but as an optional activity that doesn’t effect the core game would be welcome. A good start would be player housing, some type of sandbox style system would be great for this game. I would not like to see the existing PVE or PvP areas clottered up with player housing but some other areas could be created to accommodate this feature.
There are actually very, very few true sandbox MMOs.
Right now I’d say Eve and maybe Lineage 2 give people a lot of options and most importantly: open world pvp.
Everything else is just your standard issue themepark MMO with some player housing or similar elements slapped on for a pseudo sandbox feel.
GW2 is fundamentally a very traditional MMO.
Yes there is no trinity and we have a more active combat, but the systems that make people play GW2 are the same system that games like WoW use.
You cant just slap some sandbox on a game like GW2.
Eve works so well because the entire game is build to be a sandbox, on top of being a pure pvp game where pve really is just a means to an end for the majority of the community, rather than the primary content.
Every MMO is ultimately the same.
PvP or Grind.
It cannot work any other way because all MMOs need their customers to play a lot in order to make money, but cant possibly provide enough “fresh” content to prevent repetitive gameplay. Eve went for PvP, GW2 went for a mix but is mostly grind.
250 ping is way too much in a movement based game such as GW2.
It only works if the people you play against in pvp/wvw are bad/slow.
Warrior is by far the most durable class.
Guardians can go invest a lot of points into mandatory traits to end up with sustain that is almost as good as a raw Healing Signet.
And they still lose 7k hp compared to Warriors because of their “superior sustain”
Warrior just has this brute force playstyle that no other class really offer because they are all either squishy or have inferior sustain for long fights or have to spend a ridiculous amount of trait point into making up for those 2 disadvantages.
The footprint effect of main hand weapons will always override the footprint of off hand weapons.
Shields are also basically worthless 99% of the time.
Hence making these effects for pure offhand weapons is a waste of time.
Public Test servers are not merely used to find bugs.
They are absolutely used to get early feedback on (possibly) upcoming features.
And yes that helps against obvious head in the cloud decisions like the trait changes.
A lot of companies have public beta servers that get the new patches before they go live, but after inhouse testing.
Thats usually a good idea to get relevant feedback as most people working for these companies have honestly no clue about things like balancing.
Then again Anet claims that the NPE/trait changes were based on feedback so I am not sure if more feedback from a public test server would have changed anything.
Just use a hard CC to stop the ranged attack.
GW2 has probably the most materials as far as craftings goes.
The crafting itself is simple, but the sheer amount of different materials is very annoying.
But yeah Eve online probably has the most complex crafting system of all MMOs.
As well as lacking any sort of item binding so every item in the game is tradable which is really cool.Except, this also means that you can loose the items you just spent half a year building and payed what looks like 50000$ irl money to build… just saying…
Well Eve punishes fools more so than other games thats true.
Still, nobody forces you to be an idiot.
It would be pretty nice if you could just make the current armor of one of your chars into an outfit.
You’d set up your skins as you want, then press a button, pay lets say 600 gems, and you get that appearance as an outfit for all of your characters.
This would be so awkward if an ugly, 3 meters tall Norn guy “pets” his little Kasmeer mini lol

Even if the chance of breaking would be 95%, that would still basically destroy the Key sales.
Never going to happen.
Pistol would be great.
Right now the only way to get a Warhorn and a ranged weapon is taking Axe/Sword.
Giving Warriors a main hand Pistol that is useful (which means power, not condition based) would offer a lot of new weapon options and allow stuff like Hammer + Warhorn and still have range which would be awesome.
Black Lion Chests are basically Anet way to cash in on stupidity.
There is nothing in these chests that is actually worth the price of the keys considering the average drop rates.
I think they are relevant as a symbol.
They are probably the biggest thing in the game that are clearly bad for the players – they rely on players doing something for their own detriment.
And yet ArenaNet is perfectly happy in exploiting that.
It’s worth taking a very good look at, just so everyone realizes that ArenaNet is not above doing something bad for their players in order to get some profit.
But thats a good thing.
These chests and even the keys in the shop clearly state that you get random items.
Everybody that is, lets say adventurous enough to spend real money on what is ultimately a lottery knows what they are buying.
They obviously get kitten on by RNG most of the time, but the money these people drop into the toilet founds the game and ultimately benefits all players.
Anet exploits the gullibility of a few not so bright individuals for the greater good of the game. On top of the fact that there are certainly enough people buying keys in full knowledge of what they’re getting because they like the lottery thing or w/e.
Black Lion Chests are basically Anet way to cash in on stupidity.
There is nothing in these chests that is actually worth the price of the keys considering the average drop rates.
But since some people dont bother researching that and/or just like to gamble Anet gets to make some easy money without exploiting the majority of customers that is semi intelligent.
Basically: Fools pay the game for not so foolish people and get some fun with the lottery.
I call that a win for everybody.
Rewards are partially level scaled anyway.
All/most drops and items are typically scaled to your character, not the NPC you killed for it.
The scaling had to be nerfed.
Even scaled level 80s could kill low level mobs in 1-2 basic attacks.
If thats the scaling used, you might as well not bother scaling at all.
Long bow seems more like an added PvE flavor to counter the ever harder encounters they are added.
You can already see in in most fractals where its easy to range a boss rather than melee. Ofc melee is faster but ranger is much much safer and the only viable way to clear a pug 50 fractal. they already admitted that PVE is getting harder, so its probably why they are adding the longbow now
Thats the point.
Guardians have no ranged weapon that does reliable damage vs highly mobile targets.
The new CC mechanics for bosses means they are more or less immune to Ckittenil you deplete the bar. This means that a mobile boss that cant be facetanked is unnecessary hard for guards, and a new weapon is the perfect opportunity to fix this.
A reliable ranged weapon wouldnt hurt for pvp either.
I’m appalled at how insensitive you people are. OP said they had a minor panic attack over this, and you’re all brushing it off like it’s nothing. Shame on all of you! This is not how you talk to people with disabilities! I hope each and every one of you have to one day live while crippled by something outside of your control. Maybe then you’ll understand why this is unacceptable.
Its quite simple: the word dumb isnt all that offensive, even with mental disabilities in mind.
If somebody gets a panic attack at the word being dropped randomly, its clearly a very personal and psychological problem, but it has nothing to do with the game.
The correct course of action would be to get a thicker skin either on your own or with professional help.
Because a lot of people use words like dumb and if you suffer from merely hearing the word without even being directed at you, you have a huge problem even outside of the game.
So rather than posting a very weird and trolly looking thread on some game forums, go try to fix this problem that you/the op have, not the game.
This will improve your general quality of life too.
I am pretty sure that all drops of a certain piece are gated behind the associated chapter of the story.
If you dont have the story, the associated armor part will never drop anywhere.
Though it is kind of amusing that Carapace is the most expensive armor in the game if you missed just a few LS chapters.
I would really love a reliable power based ranged weapon with its dps focused on the AA.
No. Weapons based around the auto attack are incredibly boring. I want something that gives me a reason to use the 2-5 skills.
I didnt say “a weapon that only has 1 skill”.
If the dps are focused on #1, 2-5 are most likely utility skills.
Which is perfectly fine if they are useful utilities.
I just dont want another Scepter that forces you to ground target an aoe every 4 or so seconds to get dps. That doesnt add any gameplay, but is annoying as kitten.
Seing how a lot of classes have useless Elite skills for pve, there should be more than enough opportunities to use it while leveling.
There are a lot of audio bugs and a lot of general bugs in the patch from yesterday.
My Necro randomly recites mesmer mantras at the moment.
I guess I shuld be happy she does it in her own voice huh?
The problem is that the boon duration bonus is too small.
You give up 224 points of attributes for 6% boon duration.
Seeing how the traits value 100 points of attributes equal to 10% boon duration, you should get 22% boon duration on a complete armor set.
I would love to see boon duration as an attribute in more stat combinations, but only with real numbers rather than this 1% crap.
It cant be a condition based weapon unless it gets a new condition that fits with guardian aesthetics .
Burn is simply too weak as a condition to rely on for damage, even compared to the other kittenty conditions.
I would really love a reliable power based ranged weapon with its dps focused on the AA.
I really hate the Scepter 2 spam bs.If I want to spam symbols on a ranged weapon, I’d be playing a staff Ele.
Balanced stance has a much lower cooldown even vs a traited Signet and also gives swiftness.
I will personally switch to the Signet because I mostly use it for execute/revival situations which dont require mobility, but absolutely require reliable stability.
But yeah massively increasing the duration of balanced stance to give it more of a stance feeling would be nice, even if it means losing another stack or two.
Just run champ trains in Orr.
I got the Achievement without doing anything special from a champ train.
Pretty sure intentionally making your team lose isnt allowed.
Being stupid enough to do it this way and admit it in chat is very awkward though.
If I want somebody to lose I will make him lose without getting “caught” or making it quite as obvious.
1. Very few modern MMO have a chance of failure in their crafting systems.
2. GW2 has massively more crafting materials than most other MMOs, less materials mean you dont need an extra storage for them
3. Transmutation is a common feature of MMOs in recent years.
4. No regular server downtime is indeed very nice.
5. There are quite a few bugs that exist since release.
Why would Necros be that bad for Dungeons?
Daggers have decent dps and Well of Suffering basically deletes groups.
The standard pvp power necro build should be perfectly fine for dungeons.
All I want is for the level 20 scrolls to be stackable.
But thats probably too much to ask.
And it removes one source of new blood to WvW. There are some map completers who found out they really enjoyed WvW after reluctantly going in the first time for map completion.
Its actually the other way around.
Its not hard to try WvW whenever you feel like it.
But being forced into WvW and more or less forced to make suicide runs for points if you get unlucky with your server color will make people hate WvW.
Either way this takes away forced content from pve players which is good.
I wouldnt mind introducing some WvW only rewards similar to Glorious Armor to give the WvW crowd something unique as compensation.
MMOs cant work without grinding, not on this scale.
Everybody that took that no grind philosophy for face value is deluding themselves.
Once you hit max level MMOs have 2 options: PvP or Grind
That will never change.
Its cheap and casual.
There are other games that are comparable or better, but they need a sub or are very unfriendly to casuals.
I also got the key for free from a friend, that sorta helped.
A good change, forcing people into weeks of frustrating wvw and kittenty stuff like having to use server resets to get anything done was terrible.
Its not about being difficult, its about relying on arbitrary kitten like server colors.
Thats just too much RNG that can result in extremely bad luck/frustration.
A guy pulling 10k viewer wont do much to GW2 tbh.
Mostly because 10k isnt much for a semi well known streamer to begin with.
MMOs are just incredibly boring to watch anyway.
GW2 pvp is especially bad and very uninteresting to watch unless you are very involved into the current pvp meta anyway. Its just too much not visible information that makes stuff look very random unless you know exactly whats happening and whos playing how for which reasons.
Not a good start to pull in new people.
It seems Anet has mostly given up on Dungeons.
Main selling point is to clutter screenspace of other players? Ok.
No, main selling point is to show your cosmetics to other people. If they can turn it off at will, why bother buying it?
The same argument could be used for gemstore armor skins.
But those can be turned off.
Backpieces shouldn’t get any special treatment.
Turned off by the person who bought them.
Just like wings can.
I’m entertained by the “I’m offended by immersion breaking wings” arguments, because I am almost certain several people of that mindset want SAB back.
No I can turn off the armor of anybody I want in my Graphics options.
Thats the entire point.
You can turn of armor, but for some reason not back items.
This should be fixed asap, but it wont.
Because Anet doesnt give a kitten .
Conditions wont be fixed in the expansion.
You cant ship core mechanics with an expansion and have people that dont buy HoT effectively play another game.
Same goes for traits.
These things might get fixed after the expansion release, but certainly not expansion only.
Main selling point is to clutter screenspace of other players? Ok.
