So people are now complaining that prices going up due to supply and demand interactions, in a situation where the governing body has declared a preference for allowing free market (ish) forces to run their course, is comparable to communism…?

I am not at all fond of jumping puzzles. Then again I do not care for platforming games either. I do not have a problem with an exclusive reward being gated behind specific content, especially if it is a purely cosmetic reward such as a skin. I dont feel that a holiday item needs to maintain a semblance of being “special” by being gated in this manner though.

I tend to find that spending time doing something that I detest in game because it is the only path to something that I want drives me away from the game…or at least encourages me to stop spending money.

That said, I would rather see a skin as the reward for a JP than some sort of vertical progression.

So “I hate this” now equal “this is bad design”?

Can you hate a good design?
Do you want to tell us that a good design in a MMO should bring dissatisfaction, frustration and hate, if not to all, at least to a part of the playerbase?

Can you name a feature or an aspect of a game that is not disliked by some of the player base?

By your logic there has never been, and never will be, an example of good design in a game of any sort because, no matter how well designed, any feature will be disliked, or hated, by some players.

As for this old discussion…

A-Net uses an old engine which was used for gw1, which was based upon an old (directX 7 FPS Engine (Unreal (2?) engine).
They modified the engine so far they were using only a couple of basic components ad dthey now had it running and were eventually allowed to use without paying COMMISION.

Then gw1 was released 3 games and 1 expansion on the 3 base games were supplied, without monthly fees.

Eventually GW2 was developed on a slightly modified version of the original gw1 engine. Now running Direct X 9.0c

This engine is property of ArenaNet. as as such it doesn’t cost them much to have you play on it.

IF Arenanet would buy the latest version of the unreal engine and do the project to get it running like this present engine they still own the owners of the engine 25% of all REVENUE made from this game, that’s 25% less updates, 25% less personell and 25% less servers. OR A MONTHLY FEE.

Even then all code needs to be rewritten, and the project would take years. I doubt gw2 as a game could afford the investments. also after these investments it would not be a new game. it would be the sma game just with a litlle more fluent gameplay, IF it works out.

Yes it sounds easy, but can this game afford no content updates for 2 years while the code is made to get this game refreshed? After 6 months of coding for HoT this game felt dead. I doubt this game would survive a DX12/ multi CPU update…

It will take time to rewrite the game (which is likely heavily spaghetti-ed due to 2 big code updates to the engine and the fact the base engine is so old.)
It will take resources (cash/manpower)
It will take commision (loss of revenue for the game)
It will change the minimum requirements of the game (even though most GPU’s should work with DX11 or 12 and most PC’s have 4 or more cores or threads nowadays)
Why? \\to make a 4+ year old game look a little more fluent, on high end systems only.
This game works on 4K screens (though the UI gets really small) it works on lower end laptops (i3’s and i5’s) without real problems except maybe for the fact it was made for 5 vs 5…

That is completely FALSE

I won’t claim that there are no inaccuracies in Pax’s post, but you are mistaken in claiming that it is completely false. Much, if not all, is quite accurate.

Why has the price increased so much anyway? All the weapon recipes from the forge were in the game from the beginning. The only thing that’s eating mystic coins is the guild hall. But those upgrades should be done by done in most guilds or won’t ever be. So I’m curious where all the coins are going.

Or is it just that the supply was reduced greatly? I don’t really remember if there were other ways to get them years ago.

Well incoming supply was reduced dramatically when monthly achievements were removed, and the potential to gather the same MC per month didn’t return until we got the Legendary Ley Line anomaly event around July 2016, so for a long time incoming supply was actually smaller. But really the biggest factor is the legendary collections. It made legendaries more obtainable in that you no longer had to buy a precursor from the TP or get one as a drop, so more people were starting to craft legendaries. Then the HoT legendaries require an entire stack of MC on top of 77 clovers (so up to ~500 coins, more if you get unlucky when crafting clovers), so require a minimum of a full stack of MC to be destroyed to create. We got more sinks, and the sinks that had already existed became more accessible to more players, so more players were using them.

I’m not sure why people think they shouldn’t be 1g. Just because they weren’t worth anything 4years ago doesn’t mean that’s the price they should be forever. What if they were 5g each? 1g wouldn’t sound so bad.

This is such a non argument. It can just as easily be turned around and I could say

“I’m not sure why people think they should be 1 gold.”

Do you see how weak that is as an argument?

They “should” be one gold because that is what the people who own them are willing to sell them for, and what people who want to buy them are willing to pay.

Actually the strongest possible argument.

To use your analogy:

You can spend the extra gold in the bag when its there without any penalty to you when its not.

We know where the extra health comes from, you can tell what your base health (without the buff) is, so enjoy the gift of extra when it is available.

Do you complain when another player passing by grants you a temporary buff that increases your stats?

WvW gives you a health buff sometimes. Simple as that. You are being given EXTRA health. Health is something you indicate that you want, so being given, like a gift, more should be seen as a good thing.

Which means there should be no harm in them adding selectable sigils/runes to legendaries. This makes them all the more desirable and not just for the skin. I have seen plenty of people who hate the skins but like the stat swap and reskin them. I for one use the Super Warhorn over the Howler I got and wouldn’t you know, my necro uses it both for condi and power. It gets expensive to continually replace the sigils and so I just do not and in so doing lose out on dps. This is something that legendary weapons (and soon armor) should not have to face.

Making them more desirable for more than just the skin contradicts your first sentence.

Still, remains that Ascended gear is catching up with Legendary weapons in functionality. Making sigils swappable with no extra cost involved seems reasonable.

Ascended is not catching up in functionality. The designated functionality difference between ascended and legendary tier is free stat swapping. Legendary has it, ascended does not. The, by design, primary point of distinction for legendary weapons is cosmetic.

Legendary weapons used to stand out because they had the best stats.
Then Ascended gear was introduced.
Legendary weapons still stood out, because they had swapable stats.
Now we are starting to see ascended items that do the same thing.
I agree with the upgrade swapping, even if they don’t go the route of making them something you select, at least allow them to be added/removed (AT NO COST) whenever someone chooses.

Legendaries originally had the same stats as exotics. When ascended was introduced legendary stats were increased to match the new tier. Legendary never had better stats.

That limit to the utility is a good thing, IMO, for a weapon tier that is supposed to be primarily a matter of cosmetics. I think that encouraging more people to pursue legendaries is a bad thing.

I don’t know what legendaries are “supposed” to be, but the stat swap mechanic is quite limited in utility as a result of this issue. It seems to me they would be more attractive if there were some way to have swappable stats with some ability to work around this limitation.

In my opinion, legendary weapons being a little more attractive would be a good thing. As it stands, they’re an extremely expensive skin that the vast majority of players simply avoid. With a little boost like this they’d become a bit more useful and more players would spare the time and expense to craft them.

ANet said they are supposed to be for the skin. Admittedly adding stat changing, post launch, could be confusing to those unaware that legendary tier was intended to be a matter of cosmetics.

An expensive skin that the majority avoids sounds about right to me.

It’s not a bad thing at all. The cost and time people put into these weapons only to have to continually buy a sigil replacement in order to maximize damage due to different stats needed on a different class can become too costly. People do not just make legendary weapons (and soon armor) just for the skin but also for the stat changes. And think about legendary armor. What is the point in having a stat swap in it when you would have to continually CHANGE the runes you are using? It would get rather pricey and in certain cases time consuming to do this. Think about mesmers needing Leadership runes? They cost 75 Proofs of heroics or 100 crystalline ore a piece and you honestly think they should have to continually get these if they want to swap their legendary armor to a condi setup for their necro or berserker setup for their ele? It is not like everyone is going to get legendary weapons/armor. The majority of players most likely will not get them. So there should not be a shortage on demand for runes and sigils.

Of course the majority will not get them. That should go without saying.

If lack of sigil swap makes stat changing unappealing then, by definition, people who pursued legendaries, knowing that sigil swap did not exist, did so for the skin.

Legendaries should have what they were described as having at the time you decided to make them. That does not include sigil swap. It might be nice to add the feature but that is different than, “should,” include.

Personally I would rather this feature not be added to legendary unless it is added to all weapons of exotic grade and higher.

Most people that are active enough to login daily (with the possible exception of alt accounts) will most likely consume at least part of their coins.

I don’t think that is true at all. Many players login every day but have no intention or ambition of crafting a legendary, either because of the cost or the effort (or maybe because of the annoying sound fx!)

Those players just get the daily reward and deposit it just like any other crafting material. MCs will only come to their attention when they overflow their storage, or when they read threads like this.

Mystic Coins are used for a lot more things than legendary. They’re not even a big part of crafting a legendary.

Dailies!

Ashen.2907

I would appreciate the event dailies if they were about encouraging people to play together, to cooperate in a shared game world. Unfortunately, in my experience they are more about putting players into conflict, competing for event credit.

I’d like to introduce you to a new game, Guild Wars 2, which improved on previous MMO design by allowing all players who participate in open world content to receive credit!

Unlike other games, other players can’t steal your kills, or your gathering nodes, as you both receive equal rewards from them!

So… unless you mean that you run around and events are completed before you get there, nobody is competing for event credit with you. They are simply completing events.

If you do mean that they are complete before you get there, I’m not sure what else to suggest, since this is observably not a problem for many, many people on many, many maps.

Perhaps I can introduce you to a game called Guild Wars 2 where event mobs can be instantaneously destroyed before everyone attempting to participate in the event can get credit or where events can be completed in seconds while players attempt to participate. Competition. He with the fastest activating AoE wins.

“this has been, observably, a problem for many, many people on many, many maps…” as reported in numerous posts and threads on the forums in addition to complaints in game since implementation of the current iteration of dailies.

Personally I find that just skipping the event dailies is a fine solution. I do some gathering, hit a vista, and then head to WvW…done in a very few minutes without a problem. I just wish that the event system handled the current iteration of dailies better.

If there is an additional source for MC but it cannot serve that function due to an insufficiency of players doing the event, is that perhaps an indication that the player demand isnt outstripping the alternate supply or that the price of MC is not as much of a problem to most players as is being argued here.

Also, adding new legendaries may be increasing demand in one sense but players completing old legendaries, or other MC skins, decreases it.

Only players put themselves in conflict. Players don’t have to be in the same group with each other to receive credit like in most games and if a player insists on following a huge mob around and missing events while there are events going on with only a player or two on them, that’s on the player, not the design.

A good example is Snowden Drifts. Players rush around in a mob mentality while the jumping puzzle in the zone has no one, or 1 or 2 players at the most, at it. The vet who spawns there counts as an event when killed. The JP is very easy to complete, not difficult in the slightest to get to. But too many people have in mind that they “have” to follow the zerg to get events done.

You do not have to be in a mob or zerg in order for the current system to create the circumstance I described.

Well, not sure how you can be competing against someone else for event credit if only another player or two is there.

Yes, but not being part of a mob does not mean that a mob or zerg are not present when you are trying to do an event.

If I go somewhere to do an event and one of those one or two other people ping the soon to be active event for others, and a zerg subsequently shows up…

It has happened enough times for me to stop pursuing event dailies.

Now back to my point: When you invest tons and tons of time, effort and mats into building a Legendary Weapon, you should be able to make it usable in any build you want,

Can’t say that I agree. At the time that anyone set out to spend that time, effort, and mats it was known that sigil changing was not a part of the deal. If you know that something you are purchasing does not include X before making the purchase then there is no, “should,” have been included.

ANet already provided a way to get rid of it that is good for you, crafting. Your personal choice to refuse doing that is not their problem.

You absolutely have the freedom to do whatever you wish, but don’t mistake that for a right to have your choices be consequence-free.

You are mistaken about it not being ANet ’s problem.

Anything that alienates, reduces engagement of, or disenfranchises potential paying customers is a problem for the company. Now the company may very well decide that they can live with the problem, particularly if they are unable to find a solution, but it is still their problem.

ANet does, after all, have the right to do whatever they wish with the game, but should not mistake that for a right to have their choices be consequence free.

It’s important to realise that you never will be able to avoid or ignore them; this is an MMO story line being developed with fairly limited resources so the story can never branch and you will have to follow the same story as every other (ex)Pact commander out there.

Of course. I am putting forward a preference for the story to be written in such a way as to have the PC avoid and ignore the offending characters, removing them from the story going forward.

Funny but I thought that the discord in the little group where Marjory was not willing to simply be told what to do as if she was a subordinate and Braham’s anger over what he saw as the disrespect for his mother’s (and Snaff’s) legacy was the first sign of any true “mature content” in the story line.

These are not soldiers in our own little army, they’re heroes and almost by definition a hero is someone who’s willing to stand up to and do what they think is right. When that’s at odds with what our character wants then a clash is inevitable and correct. Before now the characters were all just tagging along with us on our merry japes, now they have a little character of their own and their own goals. This will allow for a much more interesting story-line, IMO.

I suspect that they will return with a preview of the new elite specs before the next expansion but then I remember that norn who go to fight Jormag and fail tend to come back as icebrood so…

You think “I’m glad you didn’t join Destiny’s Edge. My Mother wouldn’t want you in there.” is mature? LOL

What I find funny is that some people think that a AAA game such as this that focuses and exploration and diversity wouldn’t add a new race. Yes guys I’m sorry but eventually they will. This game has finally found its format for creating and delivering content. The only thing they are missing is a deep focus on lore and storytelling. The addition of a new race allows developers to focus on lore expansion and story development. I’m sure that most developers in Anet have realized that what the game lacks now is lore and depth. Not only that but we will be going to new continents with different races, and you think they won’t include them into the game??? This isn’t like gw1 that you only played one race. This game needs this. It will happen. No matter what you guys think. Eventually it will come.

Since you are a developer for Anet, with the red logo right over there <———-

we can just go ahead and use this as a source then, right? New continents too, meaning

NOT Cantha and Elona? You heard it here first folks, breaking news!!!!

Ikr!

Telling us soooo confidently that Yes, this will happen. The game needs this. Eventually it will come.

In reality he’s just one more anonymous poster on the forum and he doesn’t have any more insight into whether or not anything will happen than any other person who comes on the forum and gives their opinion.

Foolish remark. New continent to the current map. So yea Cantha and so on. It’s an analytical statement. To me it makes the most sense. If you can’t wrap your head around it, then that sounds like a personal problem.

It only makes sense to your biases. Also, it’s pretty sad when you accuse people of having problems simply because they don’t agree with you. It’s time to come down off your judgmental high white horse.

What is sad? It’s what makes sense to me? Your assumptions are funny. Judgmental high white horse??? Are you sure you’re using the term appropriately? You seem to not get it at all. I dont care about “judging” anyone. What is said is an analytical statement and what makes the most sense??? When did you interpret that as a reality? sigh it seems the judgmental one is you.

Really… what I’ve seen is you making a post and telling people how things are gonna be whether they like it or not, nothing we can do to change it or stop it. So you are being put on notice that this isn’t your game, and you don’t get to make these decisions. Feel free to discuss though!

Its a high probability. When i make those posts its towards people who are adamant on a definite “NO”. Which is wrong. I am speaking in terms of probability. Hell they were even considering it in their first Xpac, which was rather small and heavily rushed. Therefore, you honestly believe that it WONT happen at all for a future PLANNED Xpac? Yea right! I’m am not saying YES, im saying its highly possible.

Probability is expressed mathematically.

Where are your numbers?

If you’re a statistician. Probability is a word. Your comments are rather pointless and ill intended. Dont be surprised if you get ignored. Maybe if your next comment is a bit more constructive and includes a bit of depth, then you’ll receive a response. Asking for statistical date on a constructive opinion. Do you realize your comments really lead…no where? LOL

So you are not able to support your claim.

Okay then.

Less analytical than wildly speculative really. Not really any more facts supporting the addition of new races than there are for the addition of space craft to go after the mother of all elder dragons who lives on another planet.

There is less evidence supporting the opinion that there wont be a new race. Its highly probable. NOT for this coming Xpac, but for a future release.

I never said that there will be no new race. But I would be delighted to see actual evidence that Anet intends to add a new race.

Where is the math demonstrating probability for your speculation?
