Is there at least a free port to this area, bypassing the Mists?
Of course not. Which is why it’s still inferior to LA.
Oh well, if it gets the elitists out of my sight and into some place out of the way, then it was money well spent. Especially since it’s not my money.
Now, if we could make it so they spent money to get them out of the game, it would be even better.

There are two instances in which the chest can bug itself.
1. If you are too close to the chest when someone else opens it, and you press f, you are transported to divinity’s reach, the chest gets marked as open, and the tower doesn’t count for achievement (ever, since it is also marked as already visited somehow).
2. The same happens if during chest opening animation (but before you get the loot) you get kicked out due to new event starting. Chest marked as opened, achievement does not increase.
Fortunately there are more than 30 towers in the world, so i was able to finish it somehow, but if someone encounters more problems than i did it might prevent them from acquiring that achievement.
Edit: adding to the post above: first advice is very important. Do not risk getting kicked off when too close to the chest. Better wait those few minutes and be sure.
Second is not really necessary – if you participated in the event, you can go for the chest – just do not take too long.
There is however a third advice i’d add: When going for the chest, let the other people get there first. do not rush, wait halfway up the tower, at least one level of stair behind the crowd. Don’t be too close, when they will be opening the chest. Only when they are finished should you go open it yourself.

This is not true. I’ve gotten credit for 3 of the champions without talking to them…I just stumbled upon it already in progress. There might be a bug, but one person getting credit for an event is not how it is designed.
You can definitely get the credit after joining the battle halfway – you just need to deal enough damage. It is possible that the achievement check is based not on the event medal check, but on the damage threshold for drops or something similar.

Hopefully the boost to 500 in each craft will allow tradable ascended items to be made though.
Well, they have already stated that all the ascended gear will be account bound. They will not be tradable.

I can’t be the only one who hates these; they’re stupid as hell.
It’s not fun to lose the whole thing and have to start all over again because of a single tiny mistake. Especially when said attacks are poorly telegraphed with specific methods for avoiding them inside a tiny dome that limits your field of view.
All this is a direct consequence of damage mitigation through dodge being a method far superior to all others. As a result all increases of difficulty progress alongside one (or more) of the three paths.
1. increasing penalties for not dodging (one-hits, and dodge-or-die approach)
2. making it harder to dodge (attack spam, massive aoe barrages, preferably one after another so that the target would be hard pressed to regenerate endurance, or making the attack tells less and less visible)
3. completely circumventing dodge mechanics (revolving laser walls in Aether blade retreat that can’t be dodged through, for example)
In the end, any “difficult” fight requires less and less tactics, becoming pure arcade game, and heavily punishing even the slightest mistake. And the only important stat becomes pure DPS – because the game ignores everything else.
The problem? People that want to play arcades play arcades, not MMO’s.

Also, as previously mentioned, there was no reason to clarify anything else at that time, because until the game launched there was no way Anet could know people were confused about anything else?
Yep, they certainly weren’t confused about this game having no vertical progression and no stat grind. Oh wait…
Remember, remember, 15th of November
The earliest date I can find for the manifesto is Aug 10, 2010. The clarification on the blog was Aug 13, 2010. So why do people keep claiming that the manifesto means one thing when those points were clarified only 3 days later nearly 3 years ago as to what they meant?
Because they don’t clarify anything important? All the problematic parts with the manifesto are still there.
The real issue here is those that choose to define grind by it’s “modern” definition as opposed to its original definition have nothing in the manifesto itself to support them. It starts off with Colin talking about this annoying grind before getting to the fun stuff. What are the odds that fun stuff is talking about gear. The game has always been activity based, rather than gear based.
Exactly. The manifesto strongly suggests that there would be no (or minimal) annoying gear grind before getting to the fun stuff. Because, as you yourself have noticed, the chance that they considered gearing up as fun stuff was close to zero then. The game was not meant to be gear-based.
And yet, it is going in this direction now.
True doesn’t mean true forever. It was true when they wrote it. Every game changes. Can you name one MMO that hasn’t changed and evolved.
There’s evolution, and there’s changing a whole core philosophy by 180 degrees 3 months after launch. One is not like the other.

Since November 15th GW2 is trying to return to that design. That’s what most of the protests are all about.

Maybe its not really her in there. Maybe the real queen has been kidnapped and replaced with a more sinister copy of herself.
Oh, she has been acting like that from the very beginning. Look at the end of caduceus manor story – it’s clear she considers Logan to be an idiot (well, that one is understandable), and barely contains her irritation with him. Still, she does continue to string him along so she can keep his loyalty.
Everytime she shows up, she comes along as someone very cold and calculating. having cruel gladiatorial games that would satisfy population’s need for entertainment would be perfectly in line with what her personality seemed up to that point.
So would be creating an army of perfectly loyal mechanical servants subject to only her personal will. Too bad that someone interfered in that last one.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Except that the manifesto didn’t mention progression at all. It’s incorrect to suggest that it did. Nor did it mention vertical or horizontal progression.
There were dev mentions about all grind being only for looks, never for stats. Devs tried to get out of it later by claiming that the “1000 hours” mentioned should be taken literally, and not figuratively. The same approach has been taken to everything else in the Manifesto and previous dev statements – twisting the wording, or going for strictly literal interpretation, while fully abandoning the spirit of what has been said.
All your defence of Manifesto is also based on those methods, by the way. You keep saying that there’s nothing wrong with Manifesto, as long as the words used can be creatively redefined to match the new situation, even if the spirit of original message is long lost. And it is lost, no matter how hard you might try to twist the wording.

another conspiracy thread I presume? Here are two possible scenarios:
a) anet wants Kiel to win: They create an elaborate event which includes a voting “game” for the players, they invest company time and manpower in this. Players seem to favor the other candidate. The lamentation of anet employees can be heard throughout the whole city “OH NOEZ; WE WANTED KIEL TO WIN; what are the players doing? – we have to fix this!” They manipulate the votes.
b) anet wants Kiel to win: They create an event without player participation in the election process. Kiel wins, storyline continues according to original design. So, what do you think? Here some little help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razor
Anet creates a voting event where both candidates are not presented equally. One is always shown in positive light, and had a lengthy introduction in previous living stories, while the other is always shown with negative presentation, and has been up to that point known only in name.
Use the link you have supplied yourself, think for a while and tell me what other conclusion can we draw from it.

Sitting on about 270 laurels at the moment. Seeing how slow they are acquired, i’m not going to spend them on anything i’m not 200% sure i will need. For now, i am waiting to see if anything will be added to vendor list when the new ascended gear is revealed.

It’s still quite easy to do with a staff ele – just spam aoe’s at the shatterer’s right front foot and you will get at least one crystal every fight

If developers were (among other things obviously, including making something cool), testing the waters as to public opinion about RNG by having one ticket’s main discount being pro-RNG, and if they believed the pro-RNG choice would carry the day, then it would be natural for them to attach to that choice the cooler content that they wanted to make.
That’s one kittenuption there – “If”. It’s some of the players that assigned Pro-RNG relevance to Evon, not Anet. And really, just some of the players – for most of the crowd that never visits this forum this would likely have no relevance at all.
Anet tests the waters by putting RNG boxes in the store, and looking at the sales values. If they sell well, then the experiment was a success. And unfortunately it seems they do sell well.

Like I explained previously multiple times now the time gate only reduces the requirements on the player it doesnt change time required. Likewise non time gated currencies would still require the same time but to keep to that schedule they’d need to increase requirements on the player.
As i have explained to you several times already, it’s exactly those time requirements that are a problem.
In order for this game to not be about stat progression, BiS equipment cannot be hard or costly to acquire.
And this game was not supposed to be about stat progression.

The playerbase has sent a resounding NO WE ARE NOT ALL THAT INTERESTED IN LOCKBOXES message.
Voting for Kiel did not send such a message. Not buying RNG boxes would, but it seems they are still very popular, no matter how ridiculous the odds.
Honestly i don’t understand why people would buy those, but the sad truth is that they do. And as long as they do, no amount of Kiel voting is going to change that. Especially since it’s not Evon that is selling them to players, as Evon is a fictional character. And because the voting was never about RNG boxes at all (it was only a tiny minority that latched to that interpretation), but – as presented by Anet – about choosing between a good human girl and a bad and unsympathetic charr.
…and if the fractal choices had been swapped, evon would have lost 10-90 instead of 48-52, and his supporters would have declared it a rigged and unfair election
Well, the candidates weren’t presented equally, so yes, the election was not exactly fair. And i bet most of the voters didn’t care about fractals at all.

Agreed. Seeing a reskin of a HoM supposedly unique design being introduced to the game is bad enough. Seeing that this reskin is actually done way better than the original is adding insult to the injury.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
They clearly want ascended gear to take 15 days at least to earn.
Yes, i know. This is exactly what i disagree with. As long as the top stat gear is hard/takes a long time to get, the vertical progress is a problem. The more time gates there are, the worse the situation is.

The achievement doesn’t go up with adding more gold to the wallet. It’s stuck at the level just before patch.
Then that’s indeed a bug, they said that it’s supposed to still be achievable, maybe when you get a little more gold it’ll recalculate? Otherwise I’m sure they’ll fix it.
Correction – it does update, there’s some weird delay on it though (usually you need to logout, but sometimes it doesn’t work, and sometimes it updates even if you didn’t relog).

I’m quite surprised Ellen won myself. Everything I read, it should have been Evon by a landslide. Something is fishy.
I expected that from the very beginning – the whole presentation strongly supported Ellen, and we all know that most of the players would just go with that. I bet most people didn’t even know or care what fractals would be developed (or realize that cheaper waypoint costs are for only a month). All that mattered was that the game told them that they have to choose between a human “hero” female, and an “eeeeviiiiiil and greeeedyyyy” charr – thus, basically telling them who to choose.
While i did vote for Evon, i didn’t really think he’d go this close to winning.

On the other hand there would be with your proposed method.
Person A works/has a family and a 2nd job, 2hrs now and then is all he can afford 6hrs a week max.
Person B works so for him/her 8hrs of farming every day is completely out of the question, 4 hrs per day is all they can afford
Person C is A student on summer holidays, 8hrs per day of farming in summer is not a problem
Person D is unemployed 12hrs of farming per day is welcome as it helps them forget their troublesThats your inequality right there.
360hrs for Person D is nothing… 30 days and done.
360 hours for person C is though but not a problem 45 days and done
360 hours of person B is though but they can get a piece every 90 days
360 hours of person A is impossible 420 days just for a single pieceFor a full set, person D will take a Year … thats fine
For a full set Person C will take 1 year 6 months … thats already a problem
for a full set Person B will take 3 years … Hmmm nope
For a full set Person A will take 14 years… Game is not likely to be around long enough to finish the set.How is that equal?
Person E plays every day. Person F plays the same amount of hours total, but due to work plays only on weekends.
With time gating:
For one piece, person E needs 15 days (2 weeks and a day)
For one piece, person F needs 7 weeks, and one day in the 8th week’s weekend (so 7 and a half weeks)
For a set(*), person E needs 225 days.Two-thirds of a year.
For a set, person F needs 112 and a half weeks. That’s 784 days (and half a week ;P). Over 2 years.
Both play the same amount of hours.
How is that equal?
(*) 6 armor pieces, 5 trinkets, backpack, 3 weapons(1h+off/2h set), Let’s ignore aquabreathers as they are not craftable now. Let’s ignore the fact that 15 days is the cheapest cost, and lot of pieces are priced significantly higher.

Thats why I said, that impressed is just wrong word. Now tell me, what would get you impressed in guild wars 2? Specific example pls )
I won’t give names, but as an example, there are several WvW commanders that i do respect. I don’t respect them because they bought a blue tag – i do that, because they have shown time and time again to be good commanders. Of course, the tag makes their actions more noticeable.
The same applies to legendaries – i can be impressed by someone playing really well, or “impressed” when someone floors in even the simplest encounters. Holding an attention beacon like legendary just makes those actions more noticeable, sometimes making me pay more attention to the person than i usually would.
But then, doing some outstanding things (in both positive and negetive meaning of this word) would get my attention faster.
TL/DR – if you are worthy of respect, having a legendary sometimes help other people in noticing that. If you are not… you’d better not call attention to yourself or you’re going to regret it.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
To answer the question posed, no player impresses me, and I don’t get impressed by video game players in general.
Actually, this is whats wrong with this thread. People dont like to be impressed by others. Its their game and they want to be the heroes. “Not this other guy. I should be special!”
Thats another reason, why u getting so much negative posts here. People do get impressed. Not all. But many. But to state it themselves? Not many people can stomp their pride so much ^^.
I do get impressed sometimes. When i do, it’s because that person showed me something that i really could respect. It’s just that legendaries are not this “something”.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Someone will chime in “then don’t have total playtime that high”, but then that brings in the argument about vertical progression. By slowing down acquisition of these items by either having minimum number of days (time gating) or by a large amount total playtime of some activity (say new content tied to the items) it blunts the fear that players have that the game is going vertical.
It’s exactly opposite. One of the main problems with vertical progression (besides it being a hamster treadmill where you stay in place even when moving forward) is how hard is to get the next tier. If it’s easy and fast, then the progression is easy to ignore (because catching up is not a great problem) (*). Consequently, if getting equipment takes a long time, then the vertical progression becomes more punishing for the players.
The white to exotic progression that was present in the game at launch did not cause a lot of protests from the horizontal progression people, because exotics were relatively easy to acquire. Consequently, ascended gear introduction resulted in huge uproar not only because it was something new (and changed the game philosophy), but also because it was costly and heavily restricted. I’m pretty sure that if it wasn’t significantly harder to get than exotics now, much more people would have taken Anet’s insistence that it was meant to be here from the very beginning at face value.
(*) For the sake of simplicity let’s ignore here the added problem of reacquiring appearance of the gear.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
This is a magical burning. That’s why it affects stone golems, oozes and water elementals, works underwater, but has no effect on wooden structures.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
i’ve been in plenty of fotm scale 48-49 pugs with 5x-10x legendaries and you can bet no one ever gets downed at that level of play
“At that level of play”. It has absolutely nothing to do with owning legendaries or not.
This is the basic misconception at the root of the topic – that somehow a sparkling weapon can affect a person’s reputation. Gear doesn’t make a good and respected player. Skills and abilities do that. Being known help with that.
The best a shiny stick can do is to make people pay attention to the person. The rest (showing that you are someone worthy of respect) is up to the players themselves.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
At least some of us learned something useful. I didn’t know you could click on date either.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Would change nothing for me. I don’t see Legendaries as something that gives a reputation, because reputation is not something that i associate with gear. Someone with legendary can still be a terrible player. Waving some sparkling stick around won’t affect that.
When going after legendaries, i don’t do it for reputation they would give me – i am interested only in utility (that stat-swapping is a nice trick, and worth having) and looks (here, legendaries suffer seriously – only a few look good enough for me, and those are usually not the weapon types i use often).
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Do you understand the problem here?
Yes, you are annoyed that someone with loads of free time to play, and therefore is so much better than a more casual player, is forced to go at the pace of the casual player.
Did I get that right?
Nope, you got it completely wrong. A casual player, after all, won’t usually be playing every day, and even when playing, won’t be always doing dailies. What this does is actually the opposite – it doesn’t allow anyone casual to ever catch up. It enforces a strictly non-casual playing style.
As a sideeffect, it is something that stimulates a fast burnout. People that were logging in and playing for fun find out they are doing it for dailies instead. Then they start to log off after doing dailies. Then something happens that causes them to stop logging for a while – and they realize that they don’t really want to return anymore. It’s a pretty common story – in fact, GW2 was advertised to be (among other things) a game for people that left WoW-alikes for just such a reason, and didn’t want to get through it again.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

The same experience that made thaumanova an empty area till the Fire Ele got nerfed?
Remember, remember, 15th of November
That’s understandable, except I don’t think this should all be at the expense of people who are responsible with their playtime.
I has to be a balance. Thats what the daily system does. Try to balance necessary evils with fun.
Except those evils aren’t necessary. And there’s no fun included.

I wonder how different this would have been if Evon had his own living story content before hand.
This. It was entirely lopsided in Ellen’s favour. I called it from the start.
In fact, having Evon at as high as 48% shows clearly how bad Kiel is as a character. If she wasn’t such a cliche cardboard cutout, with this much of an advantage she should have been winning by a landslide.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Exactly because you are sitting on 150 laurels you are unlikely to get anything more for them than you already can. Anet believes in heavy timegating, and doing everything in their power to make all your past work worth as little as possible.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Actually, we don’t. As soon as she announces that she’s returning the money, she will see that the number of money lost heavily outweights the number of money reclaimed (for a many reasons, both legitimate and more shady). Also, lot of people that lost their money will never get any of it back (some because they are no longer in LA. Some, because they died). The end result may be a good propaganda, but is unlikely to be anything more.
And as for the ledgers… what honest smuggler keeps ledgers???
Remember, remember, 15th of November
If so, we know who it belongs to. How much each merchant is missing and needs returned wouldn’t be that hard to determine.
yeah, we’ll just ask them…
Ironically, most of this may be even Evon’s (directly or indirectly).

I simply detest the very idea that participating fully in a living story arch practically requires you to nolife. Yes, i know, nolifing is a MMORPG standard, blah blah, no work no gain, blah blah, carebears, grumble grumble, entitlement (insert other irrelevant arguments here).
It’s still too short.
And i bet it’s because they simply forgot initially that the location they have placed the whole vote event in is going away in two weeks.

How does someone that doesn’t do fractals get an ascended back piece?
Or at least an exotic one?
Getting ascended backpiece without fractals is at the moment impossible (there was one possibility at the Soutsun Event, but that event has already ended). Exotic backpacks can be acquired from guild armorers and karma temple vendors.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
You know I could understand your concerns if Anet kept releasing armors.
But they told us that this would be the last tier of armor.
They did not. All they promised is that there would be no new tiers this year, and that none are currently in the works. On the other hand they did promise to continue gear progression.
Yes, your ascended armor will get obsoleted at some point as well.
Unless we manage to persuade Anet to change their course.
And as an advice to the OP:
Get what armor you can get cheaply and fast. Don’t bother investing too much wealth and effort in it, though. Karma temple armor seems to be a good base to build on, seeing as Karma seems to have become a mostly useless currency.
