I just finished an article on my blog about it. Still not finished but almost.

Basically GW2 promotes in a way this social alienation. There is this intrinsic apathy in either soloquing or when forming a random group with everything. It is all about sending the invite and starting the game.

I, as a gamer but more importantly a veteran, am still amazed with how things are runned with GW2. When it comes to random groups and how they are made or formed GW2 is by far the worst game that I have ever experienced with in too many levels to be bothered to count or even type about.

Some percentage of it belongs to Arena for not making a proper MMR system to encourage ranks of people from 0-10, 10-20,30-40, ect to form their own groups and being matched at that rank but I would like to think that most blame goes the community and strictly to that for having barriers.

I remember that I used to see in map chat only 40+ groups until this patter was starting to break to 35s and 30s and sometimes you see 20+ trying to make groups (which they have all my respect for it).

Soloque is majorly ruined not by having absolutely no communication.

This game isn’t exactly demanding of someone’s critical thinking.

You shouldn’t have to tell someone who’s running a defensive staff ele build not to try to solo svanir while home point is being backcapped. Most tactics are equally obvious, but people don’t really bother to turn their brains on during matches.

Shouldn’t and how it is differ. I agree with your points but that is the most fundamental issue for me in Soloqueing. Also talking about who is doing what, where is the enemy and so many things to list within 2m before the match starts, gives you a sense of community and a group purpose.

Allot of things could be fixed with the SPvP scene first before the rest in order to have better sense of belonging to a group sharing common goals.

I would like to think, most (including me) are apathetic towards the result in soloqueing since there is this apathy in team work.

It don’t matter. Most of you don’t even communicate or don’t want to communicate. Soloque is majorly ruined not by premade vs pugs but having absolutely no communication.

So what I am trying to say punishing leavers/afkers/w.e is insignificant and holds no value and should be lower priority than the everything else.

So for example if let us say I get 100 soloque and no one talks and we are always 4v5 I wouldn’t mind at all. If it was the opposite then yes I would care since I would share with the rest something called group effort.

Been wondering whether following this;

Runes of the scholar 5/6, Rune of Divinity 1/6: Highest average damage when below 90% life out of all runesets.
+175 power, +10 all other stats, +10% crit dmg
Non crit dmg: 67
Crit dmg: 141

should be something I ought to stick with. Have been getting this push to try out a life steal build just for the sake of it. Will see.

Oh wow.

EU’s thief playerbase is really mediocre if they’re reliant on haste to have impact in team fights. This patch was a massive meta-buff to thieves. Less quickness ressing and spike-potential means less pressure on thieves and less ability to react to shortbow poison+cleave. Many of the skills and builds that made playing thief a liability for team fights have been nerfed significantly.

Multiple ele comps are difficult for thieves, but not because of any haste change. Its entirely because of how effective multiple copies of frost and shocking aura are against thief’s damage output. None of that changed, so why the crying now? We already knew that frost aura was crushing Thief and Warrior impact on fights. The quickness change didn’t make that any different; the problem was independent of that.

Not a single decent thief NA ran haste besides for critical haste, and even then the trait was unreliable and too short to capitalize on in the majority of cases. Big whoop.

  • How would you know who runs what? You don’t.
  • Since you will never know who runs what, how do you know what most decent thieves in NA would run? You don’t.
  • Since haste was more unreliable and shorter to capitalize than critical haste why would a single decent thief in NA invest on a trait that is worst than the sigil?
  • A patch that tones down thieves more is a massive meta-buff?
  • Why are you even making this a NA vs EU?

Viability: thief is fine, learn to play the class.
Diversity: having 2 specs (one requiring vastly more experience, skill, and communication/cooperation than the other – thus never being seen) is somewhat stale. However that being said the only class with true build diversity is the guardian.

Complaining about skill issues is pointless. You’re crying because you don’t have haste for your heartseeker spam post burst, requiring you to outplay people instead of face roll. Learn the class, how it plays, and what it’s capable of before whining on forums about quickness as a thief. The quickness nerf didn’t even touch backstab in terms of viability, and reduced pistol whip and unload specs to completely unplayable (not to say they were viable before).

Quickness has more uses than heartseeker spam.

  • Faster stomping.
  • Faster healing an ally.
  • Faster taking down an enemy before he uses heal or any other survivability/getaway tactics.
  • More damage output in general.

Most thieves are currently switching builds from D/D and that process was already happening since the mentioning of stealth changes. So stop assuming most thieves belong to hot join crews or most thieves use the same D/D build. Or that most thieves have got a l2p attitude and that you are the only legit player who can say a thief is viable and is fine. What is a fact is that most thieves are adapting to the “meta” where the enemy being squishy becomes less and less visible.

And since viability is fine how come thieves represent 0.01 percent of SPvP now?
If you participated in a 1v1 tourney with all the top non-thieves NA/EU from each profession players what place would you get? Last or second last?

And it doesn’t matter if YOUR build is not affected by it because others are moving forward and are balancing out their stuff which then affects YOUR build for not being up to par with the rest.

It is quite straightforward.

Quickness seems useless right now and I fairly notice it but I would like to believe that it is still good enough for a quick stomp when it is there. Used to make a lot of a difference before the nerf but I will keep on trying to see whether it can actually be worth it/decent or not and will decide later on. Used sigil of rage on off hand pistol and invested on the trait with quickness.

Also been meeting up quite a lot of double mesmers in team comps in SPvP so that forced me to switch to Hide in Shadows quite a lot from Withdrawl. Sad but true, but today I saw so far 0.01% thieves and same thing for warriors after probably 20-25 tournaments (lost count).

How did you adapt to the changes?

I created a tanky venom share build that is absolute ridiculousness when you team up with a GS warrior. Talking locking D/D ele down so hard they don’t budge til they die.

If I wanted a full venom share build how would I go about it?

Why don’t you go and play hello kitty online instead? Cause if they do that then you will probably ask for nerf through autoattacks. And when they do that you will ask for something else and something else until you can kill a thief and prove to your self you were not as bad but in reality you have been the only bad player from the beginning.

I really get what you are saying, Authority, but I still feel like the thief have a place in SPvP. It’s just down to how you decide to build your comp. My team very rarely do tournaments without a thief, because it is just superior in mobility/taking down targets. No other class can offer the same combination. Of course a thief is not needed and I’ve seen many high end teams without one, but that doesn’t mean it is not useful.
You just have to find out what the thief can do, that no other class can do better and then play that role!
I’d recommend reading Lowell’s guide (even though it is a little outdated) and Caed’s guide as well. Gives a really nice overview of the thief and what role in SPvP they have.

Maybe grouping up later on with 40ranks+ might break down some misconceptions I have got so far as SPvP goes and how team com works. I just feel a bit limited with the typical role I am being put on as being below 30.

I just do not think or believe thief blends well with groups apart from other games that I have played that a thief dwells perfectly well with healers or support units (buffs givers).

The better tourney games are filled with bunkers, semi-bunkers and cookie cutter builds like 100nader and longbow/gs wars, Very few glasses running around for burst thieves to get free kills (and those glasses are all pro dodgers). These games required the thieves to hang, to stay alive, and sustain dps pressure, things majority of the thieves just aren’t acquainted to.

I agree with most of your points being made. Not sure though that the general attitude of GW2 community is currently accepting a more balanced dps thief version build from my experience. Seems that the moment you tend to make a suggestion or ask your team mates for guidance to twitch some part of your traits it is often negative since full burst dps thief are what is accepted and allowed.

Kind of wish there was a better rotation system or more incentive for 8man tournaments since they take ages to start and doing the same map all over again in mmorpg is annoying to me (in comparison with moba games that I don’t seem to care at all to be honest).

But then again, you could do these things in WvW too… Solo supply camps, take down supply runners, dolyaks, run supply for your own team or pick off people in the back of the Zerg. As WvW is today I prefer sPvP, I’m so sick of commanders yelling “every one on me, NOW!”…. For some reason WvW have turned into a who-got-the-bigger-zerg wins, no skill required what so ever. What’s fun though is to be a small five man group working together on killing larger groups or smaller Zergs. That is hilarious!

Not sure what type of actual tactics and strategies are involved with WvW Raids but from the few videos I have watched it is just watching a bunch of people running together from one point to the other.

Been really impressed with a small five man group doing its own style so yeah that would be definitely something to look for.

Tis a sad, sad day when people come to this realization but have you ever tried using sword in spvp? honestly, I’m waiting with my team for something big to happen (I guess ladder maybe) while we do other stuff. Also, I do not believe condition thief belongs in spvp due to their role being outdone by other classes and the fact that they do not beat rangers 1v1.

I tried a couple of times S/P but it didn’t feel right. Although same thing happened when I switched to D/P from D/D so I will give it a try.

Will probably watch some videos and how traits and utilities are scattered as a S/P because I still do not get how I should approach 1v1s.

Honestly it might be just getting burned or losing interest because of no incentive.

I will try not to make this a “meh” thread but I would like to put down my thoughts about how I currently feel as a thief in SPvP.

I generally feel now and then (it is still penetrates my mind) that a thief does not shine in SPvP as it does in WvW situations doing it solo. It is not about the X ratio of winning nor being top player with points, for me team comes first so thus enjoying playing with certain players and winning is more important than anything else. As SPvP rating becomes instinctively higher skill based I just feel that whether winning or losing, I do not enjoy it as much as I should. Basically, If the team wins, I am happy, if it loses train of thoughts pop up and lead to the following;

Certainly you can point out to condi types of builds or some other related stuff but I find that particular build and other things (i.e caltrops) to be extremely boring and unsatisfactory. I tried playing around with most types available and I found P/D exceptionally tiresome. It just doesn’t make me enjoy the class properly. It is good to win and so on and so forth but if I don’t enjoy the way I win it, it just doesn’t do anything for me to be honest. To put it simply, if I use a build that is not as challenging, even though lets say it will increase my ration of wins, it still won’t do any good.

Whenever Guild Wars 2 becomes Esports, I would like to bet my money that less and less SPvP groups would take a thief with them. It is probably psychological but these current thoughts have existed since starting this whole SPvP business and it is hard not to be bothered by them now and again.

Not sure how many thieves gave up on SPvP and switched to WvW as solo or duo but I would like to have some feedback of their reasons for doing so, since I am at a point where after the patch I will have to reconsider where I should invest more time.

Maximizing the ini has always been important to me even when I was a D/D so hence the 15 on trickery. Tried the whole initiative regen but hated to death.

Would like to add that experimenting builds as a solo thief in WVW is more justifiable than SPvP (different stats altogether). In SPvP, creativity with builds are limited.

Good idea, but some of those links when I go to them
dont show the point allocation, they are just blank.

IMO a forum of guides should be actual guides and not
just showing where the points go. There are allot of guides
out there that actually talk about the build AND playstyle,
which is what I think people look for to make them better.

Just my 2 coppers.

As it just so happens, I don’t have time to search through thousands of thief builds all over the Internet just to find one that isn’t completely screwy. A lot of the builds here I designed myself through Skill Editor because, honestly, I wasn’t even going to bother trying to look for them. So I apologize.

This is why I need people commenting new builds, however.

you do not need to install the caps with the 13.2 or 13.3 drivers, the drivers have newer built in, and they simply ignore the caps(pointless to install them since they wont get used)

and laptops suck for gaming….thats kinda a given.

theres a tool on amd’s page for windows 7/vista that will fully remove the drivers(bottom of the driver page) I infact used it recently to give it a test, stripped out my drivers taht hadnt been cleaned out fully since the 11.xx days, didnt really change perf for me, but, I am glad i stripped out and did a fresh install of 13.3’s

Didn’t know it would ignore previous cap profile. Thanks for letting me know.

I have tried various driver removers and they will all leave signs of previous drivers in your pc here and there. I highly doubt that the program you are referring to even cleaned registry files, local temp, identifying hidden files, ect.

My fps performance and the visuals skyrocketed so much I almost cried. Wish I could show you how bad it was.

There was a youtube video that inspired me to make an effort to create a “support” build as a thief. Still not done with it because I am still playing around with runes and amulet just to figure out the best possible stats for my vision of “support” as well as utilities, ect.

Bunker/Damage has been posted on the d/p theory crafting so check it out too and let me know what you think.

I’ll add those builds on, I think (I’ve been playing a lot of bunker/damage D/P thief too recently, so I’d be interested in posting that on here for sure). Outside of that, there are a few other updates I’ll be adding to make the list more complete.

Well I am twitching the final version for it.

Right now going for 0/30/20/20/0. Seems more balanced all around for condi enemies (jesus christ getting tired of seeing so many condi players). Will re-post the second version when completely done.

And comment on it as well.

Alright, that would be great. The more material we have, the better it will be for thieves and the more likely we can actually get this stickied.

Due to the fact of having a lot of issues updating my graphics card (6380g for the win), I would like to post the steps I took to update it. Also this is a guaranteed solution regarding older errors i.e of not being able to open the AMD Catalyst Control.

How to completely uninstall AMD graphics drivers.

Followed the steps exactly from page one to two.
Downloaded 13.3 beta AMD Catalyst.

My fps on average increased to 25-30 from 10-15 (laptop for the win).

D/P Build Theorycrafting

Anyone see any good D/P videos? I would say I’m pretty good at it, but far from great, and would love some more tips.

The videos I see out on youtube seem to feature thiefs killing people who are 1/2 dead or have blown all of their cooldowns. I know how to kill those people.

Like I imagine most people, my big problem is balancing survivability with burst damage. I often run 0/0/30/30/15. I can do a 3 on 1 if they aren’t good. It’s a good setup but no way I can kill a good D/D Ele or a guardian. I just can’t burst worth a crap.

I went to 10/0/30/30/5 (Something like that I’m at work now so I’m not sure) for mug. It’s better but not great.

I’m running a PTV chest and the rest Zerk. Shortbow backup. I’m thinking I need to run a sword/dagger backup, PTV more of my gear and spec higher in the fist 2 lines.

You have probably seen most D/P videos including the Permanent Stealth D/P aka “Slayer” on youtube so I doubt there are more out there. Check out the attachment I posted above and let me know what you think if you can be bothered to try it out.
