What good is a shield that doesn`t block? what good is a shield that doesn`t increase your defense by a good amount? Why in the world would they put a proctection buff on a shield instead of an aoe block? Would kind of make sense to block 3 attacks with your shield over seconds instead of just reducing damage by 33% wouldn`t you think?
That would be along the lines of warriors being able to equip a gun but only use the knockback skill with it. What`s the point of a gun if you cannot shoot it? what`s the point of a shield if you cannot block with it?
Give the shield a significant def boost and trash the protection buff for the focus block skill with an aoe effect. Then it might start to seem more like what a shield should be doing.
You need to think metaphorically and less logically.
Guardian: Guards people
Shield: Protects things
Therefor, the Guardian using a shield protects his allies, by putting “Protection” on allies, and by using the 5 to protect them. The warrior’s shield blocks things, because they do not guard others. They fight for themselves, therefor they only block for themselves.
Would an aoe block not be protecting or guarding someone? If this is how anet thinks when they design skills, I can see why everything is so kittened up. Pretty soon we will see armor penetration on swords and bleed damage on hammers with this line of thinking.

Making the shield into a weapon and not a piece of armor was anets first mistake. I think they wtched 300 too many times. “Our Arrows Will Blot Out The Sun!” Haha not with Shield of Absorbtion they won`t!
I agree that a shield with no chance to block attacks or any significant increase to defense is pretty much not worth using, I`m carrying something the size of a refridgerator door and the defense equals that of a lvl 10 breastplate. But yet a cowbell looking focus on a squigly stick will give me a blocking skill.
Anyone remember the Chappelle episode when Tyrone Biggums finds the camera with the power to see the futre and peoples thoughts? This my vision of the guardian skills dev in the same exact situation.
(Guardian Skills Dev find magic camera)
(Voice of Guardian Lead Dev calling to Guardian Skills Dev) Hey man, did you ever think of anything useful for the shield. I know whatever yopu decide on is gonna be friggin BOSS!
( Thoughts going through the mind of the Guardian Skills Dev that exact moment) I want some crack!
-Guardians offer a wide variety of healing.
-Healing shout warrior or Banner warrior.
-Water attunement elementalists
-Ranger with healing spring is one of the best team healing skill.
-Necromancer with Well of Blood.
-Engineer with healing turret or bandage kit.
-You can stealth allies and they will get regen under stealth as thief if traited.
-There are Mesmer traits that allows you to shatter clones to heal allies.Every single profession can be a healing based profession if you create your build correctly. If you play correctly, you can save your teammates from death using those healing skills.
Agreed. So what would be the harm in adding one more class to the game that can do everything else everyone else can do but a little differently?

People need to get out of this hoarding mindset.
You don’t need every super cool looking weapon in the game.
Get one and be content with it.
Legendary is what it is : Legendary. Do you know how stupid it would be if anybody and everybody had one? They wouldn’t be legendary. They would be the norm, and would lose their epicness.
I don’t really care about the requirements for them, because I don’t want to get them.I want to enjoy the game.
That’s really the key thing. An absurd amount of MMO players forget that games are for fun, and instead want to fill the hole in their hearts with ingame loot.Just have fun for once.
Haha, who are you to say what someone can or cannot have? Perhaps some peoples idea of fun is working towards being able to create legendary items. Just because it don`t fit into your idea of a good time doesn`t mean it isn`t fun for the next guy. I`ve invested about 90 hours so far on a new character dedicated to a few crafting skills so I will eventually be able to make items with nice models for my main and any other character I decide to ever make. Seriously, if I am investing this time farming mats by myself and raising my skills, what would it matter to you?
If you don`t care about something and have no intentions on getting them or working towards it, why make a post like that?

Are you talking about crafting legendary items? If that`s the case why would they even associate crafting with anything related to pvp or wvw? If I undertsnad right, you can`t wear your pvp set in regular pve, so why would you need a wvw requirement for crafting?
Well, more variety and playstles for starters. I like playing a guardian as a knight in shing armor type. I `m sure there are people who like the holy monk type. With your way of thinking we allready have every class we will ever need so why bother adding more in the future. We won`t need assasins, ritualists, paragons, dervishes, or any other class that could make the game more fun to play. You are probably right though. keep it as it is for the duration of game. I can`t imagine why anyone would want to play anything different then what we allready have.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
I am really suprised most of the comments think that a monk would somehow change the way the game currently works. It would really be no different then any other class except his heals would be a little better then everyone elses and he would probably benefit the most from healing power. I`m pretty sure it would have weapons that had healing skills and would also have some for pure damage. How would this be any different then what we have now except adding another class with a different name?
I did. I just wanted to be sure I didn`t make a mistake and report someone who who wasn`t. But after watching him some more and seeing the pattern never change. I am convinced it is a bot.
WTF! I move about 100 feet down the road to go somewhere else and there is like half a dozen naked rangers with botlike names at that sport too! I hope this gets remedied soon.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
Just wondering because I went to a spot to farm for some blood and I notice a ranger is there doing the same. Nothing unusual. But when not in combat, every 3-5 seconds this player teleports 50 feet or so firing arrows at nothing. Been watching him a few minutes and the patern remains the same. Looked on the wiki at ranger skills and didn`t see anything related to teleporting for rangers so I thought i`d ask.
10-15 years ago people played mmo`s and complained they were too hard. They complained they couldn`t devote the time to develop a character that was trong enough to do this or that. Warp back to present day and now everything is handed to you. Get to 80 in 2-3 weeks and buy an entire kit of rare gear on the tp for less then 2 gold. Congratulations! You beat the game! What now?
The best part of progressing in past games was the way to the top. Well in gw2 the way to the top only takes 2 weeks. Took me a year to lvl to 60 in everquest. But because it took so long you made friends and everyone knew everybody because we were all side by side everyday. We would actually sit and talk to each other while we played. I remember the name of every guy I talked to back then. Everything happens so fast nowadays and everyone around you ingame is a blur and they fade away as fast as you see them.
Now I can understand people with limited playtime and whatever. But in order to compensate for that the lvling is super fast. I can understand the people who hated looking for healers or tanks for groups and were sick of waiting. Now they did away with the trinity type system and you are free to play how you like when you like. I can understand the people who weren`t in raiding guilds but still wanted loot to feel like they were accomplishing something with thier time. Now everything is dirt cheap and handed to you almost. The community asked for all this through the years and they got it. Now look at the state of games today. The thrill of treasure seeking is gone and the excitement of the next ding means nothing.
I don`t think a monk would be so overly healing based it would be just restricted to that. I would imagine a monk in gw2 being a smiter type in cloth with heals that are better theen any other classes. People are allready doing dungeons and events without healers. A monk would just be another supportive character added to the mix. You wouldn`t need to have a monk in your group to be able to do the content but it sure wouldn`t hurt to have one along.
How many people have done dungoens or events without warriors or guardians around? You don`t have to absolutely need to have one or not be able to do it. Same would apply with a monk. An extra pair of hands with more supportive skills to add to the situation.
Trinity? What happened to tank, heal, dps, CC, support? Youngin’s forgettin bout bards, druids, chanters, etc.
A man after my own heart! 85 Paladin 2k AA
I too think the defense on shields should be upped. Normally a shield would have the same defense as your breastlplate. But 61 defence on a lvl 80 unique is a joke when my breastplates defense is 363. Using a shield without a blocking ability should at least give a benefit by reducing damage taken by a certain % which it doesn`t. We aren`t going to get a block skill for it, we allready have aegis that refreshes every 40 seconds or so. Could you imagine if a shields worn benifit was a 25% chance to block attacks? Which would make sense, but I can hear the people screaming now at how op we would be with a skill or tool that actually makes kitten sense.
I doubt they will ever revamp the shield skills. They have uses. You got the projectile bubble/heal which is nice and you got the on demand protection which is always saved for heavy attacks or covering wounded allies. To Anet I imagine these skills seem perfect. And even if they were, the shield needs a huge defense increase to make it more appealing.
I predict the monk class returning within the next 2 years.

I still don`t understand your dodge theory. We have two dodges. How we use them is completely up to us. They regenerate over time making it an effective cooldown. You can dodge once and allready wait for it to regen while still having another on standby if you need it. Taking one dodge away and making the cooldown a little shorter is a step backwards to me.
I know the game is based on support. But if you see one person trying to get away or avoid damage. That there tells you what you need to do. I was clearing a champion jotun yesterday from an outpost. Another player shows up and we took turns supporting each other with roots and knockdowns the whole fight. Not a single word was said, not a single emote was needed, we finshed it flawlessly. If two complete strangers can manage that, what do we need emotes for?

I don`t look at it as being punished when your cooldown gets screwed up when in the middle of a cast you need to cancel it or get knocked down. I look at it as either poor programming or just something they take into consideration when writing the code. Nine times out of ten every time this happens it is when you are casting a heal or an elite skill that has a long cast sequence. Then when it interuped for any reason a casting delay it initiated. I personally hate it. Fixing it may take more work to remove since we don`t know how exactly the cooldowns function within the games code. For all I know this is probably something we will have to live with for the duration of the game. Or it could be something they could remedy, IF they wanted to.
I don`t understand your cooldown idea on the dodge. The dodge allready has a cooldown and you only get two of them. You still have to wait to regen stamina to do it again.
You really don`t need emotes either. If people see you taking fire or too much attention they can mouse over you and see your health and know if you need help. Since this is more of an online action game then an mmo, everyone has ways to make surviving better. You just need to survive long enough until the mob decides to go after someone else or it`s cc`d. You would be suprised hiow much damage you can avoid just by running in a circle if you aren`t getting ranged or snared.
Yeah I see the randomizing they have. It really throws you off because some nodes are untouched and in the same spot while almost an entire grid of the map that was plentiful is now empty. I tested the starter area and found that the nodes are respawning after you track down where the new locations are. The ramdomizing is so dramatic I thought it was bugged.

I really don`t think it would backstab anyone. I bought the original game in 05 and paid for all the expansions, dlc, costumes, and extra slots. I earned 3/4 of the rewards through my years playing. My perk is I get all that stuff for free as many times as i want it. Anyone who didn`t play the original would have to pay for them. Anet would have alot to gain if they made them available. I think I remember reading somewhere that they said they would never sell the hom stuff now that I think about it. But it wouldn`t bother me in the least if they did.
What happens if the commander decides to leave the guild? Does he still maintain it? Is this something a single player could attain or would you need to be a member of a guild for it to be accessable?

I don`t think it would be that big of a deal if they did make the hom items available with gems. They would still have to buy them as where I or anyone else can go to the legacy guy as many times as I like. I really don`t think anyone cares I have a deldrimor mace skin. But if anyone wanted it, let em buy it. Mine was Anets way of saying thank you for investing time in the original game. Any idea how many heritage armor sets they would sell? I would bet alot.
Normally copper and iron don`t take so long to respawn. I can run through the norn starter area and only find like 1-2 copper nodes. I can come back an hour later and the area is still void of metal nodes. Trees and vegetation seem to be respawning normally since I am seeing them everywhere when I return to zones. But the lack of ore after half a day of play had lead me to make this post.
I think it would be hard to track bots when every person normally harvests everything. I gather it all, lumber, ore and roots. I use the ore and lumber for crafting but just bank all the food until i get a decent amount of something then I`ll sell it.
Now if the wanna find the bots. You can find them in the one artic zone that has the animal cages you can port into to fight. Yesterday i saw about half a dozen warriors or guardians all running in a perfectly straight single file line like they had autofollow engaged and every single one of them had the same exact gear on down to the dye on the armor. And they all had jackhole names that didn`t make any sense.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
I had made new character awhile ago and have logged about 67 hours into it. I made this specific character to develop the weapon/armorsmith skills. Over the past week I have been running around the norn zones lvl 1-40ish killing and collecting materials to further develop my crafting skills. Despite the drops being infrequent, I could always rely on harvesting metal ore since I need so much it. I could clear a zone of ore, go to another map do the same and return to the original map and rinse and repeat for as long as I needed those materials to work with.
As of the update I have noticed that many ore nodes have been either moved or just not appearing in the places they normally were. I thought possibly some nodes were moved to change things up and that didn`t bother me. Now it just takes longer to get what I need. I also notice after you clear an area of ore, that the ore is not respawning. I can do an area, come back in an hour and the ore is still not there. I have seen this is the norn starting map, the lowlands, and the 15-30ish artic style zones.
I am unsure if this is intentional or a bug and since I didn`t see anything in the update notes regarding nodes I wanted it to be brought to attention.
I agree with needing some more realistic looking weapons. The three best looking greatswords in the game are the generic greatsword, the krytan greatsword and the claymore from guild 1 wars. Somewhere in the development process some of the modelwork kind of went all goofy. This seems to be the trend for mmo`s ever since warcraft became to popular. Because we didn`t have that junk in eq or daoc.
if you cant make 5g in 8 hours you are doing something wrong.
Yeah really, I hit every node I see and save every drop till all my bags are full. Then I open up the tp to sell and see what I can make. This is what I see.
Normal blue item
Vendor price 46 copper
46 normal blue items ordered by 6 buyers for 20 copper a pop
4658 normal blue items being sold on the tp for 47 copper a pop
Mithril Ore
Over 1000 in stock for 20 copper a shot
Multiple orders ranging from 5-10 copper a part
Ori Ore
Over 1000 in stock ranging from 3-99 silver per.
The only thing you make decent silver on is yellows since they sell for 15-50 silver if someone needs them. Consider yourself lucky if you find one per day. High lvl scales, bloods, sacks, bones go for decent coin and are pretty rare drops so you might be lucky if you find a few per day. Since the antifarm coding you get less drops now. But 3/4 of all the stuff you do get is worthless because its overflow and nobody wants it or wants to pay a honest price for it.
What exactly is your secret to making 5 gold a day though. I`m sure plenty of people want to know as well.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
I think that because everyone can do everything to extent is the reason for your concerns. Sure, to get through a dungeon effectivly if everyone relys on supporting everyone else and communication it can go alot better.
But in regular pve outside of dungeons anyone can pretty much conquer almost anything. If they can`t, passer bys will join in and help with the quest or event but since everyone is self sufficient, there really isn`t a need to communicate unless you want to. Then half the time nobody responds at all. It almost feels like an online single player game.
price is fine, it would be useless if anyone could afford it in an eyeblink. If you farm 5g a day you can buy it in less than a month.
I fail to see your logic really. The armor is pretty much useless. It`s only there for cosmetic purpose.
Tier 1 Breastplate – 80 Silver
Tier 2 Breastplate – 2 Gold
Tier 3 Breastplate – 30 Gold
Pretty big jump in price for a game that is supposed to be all about fun and no grind. I could farm for 8 hours straight and not even make close to 5 gold per day. Especially not on a server where 99% of the orders for items are listed for below vendor value and the other 1% are wanted for 1 copper over vendor value.
There is a quest in the lowlands I think it was where you had to cut little trees down and burn the branches. When you went to cut the trees your regular woodcutting axe was replaced with a very nice 2h axe model. The axe looked alot like the dawnguard axe in skyrim. Might be a little teaser of things to come.
I wish they focused more on making weapons of that visual quality instead of some of the goofy looking models that seem to be so popular.
They are supposed to be an ‘Elite’ Skin. That’s the stance the team has taken to heart since GW1 – Rare Skins, not stats.
I could see if you had to go into a hard dungeon and kill a tough boss for them. But there isn`t anything “elite” about trying to make enough coin to get these sets.
To the op, take your time getting to 80. There isn`t a rush. Just playing through the storyline and doing events and hearts to 80 will only get you around 23 gold or so for all that playtime. You might be lucky if you make 10 gold off all the mats you aquire along the way. So that`s 33 gold toward the set. Enough for almost 3 parts of 80 set. The other 50ish gold you`ll need will turn out to just be a grindfest in which you will lose interest in pretty quickly.
I think it being account based would be the better idea. If anyone paid 80 or 100 gold just to unlock a cultural set, they would have a heart attack knowing they had to spend that same 80 gold for every character. and on top of that having to pay for skin unlocks on every single character would be too extreme.
Just imagine if you unlocked the whispers, vigil, or priory armor and weapons on one character. If you decided to make another character that wanted to join a different order but still use the skins from a different order it wouldn`t be possible.
Not to mention the cost of the cultural sets themselves is enough to make you never want to change gear because of how expensive they are.
Charge me a buck to unlock each part I want to. I allready went through the game once looking like a misfit and hating the look of every drop I got. At least on other characters I would be able to go through the game again at least liking the way I look next time through.
In guild wars I loved collecting weapons and armors that I liked the look of. I would frequently change my weapons and armor sets because there were so many nice models to choose from that it was hard to decide on just one thing.
I had an idea for a skin unlock system simaler to the dye system. Once you equipped a weapon or armor that model would be unlocked for your acount. Then whatever weapons or armor you use could be tailored to what you want them to look like by using a system like the hall of monuments skins.
I do realize this would cut the sale of transmute stones. So I propose you make the unlocker a gem shop item. Even if you charged only a dollar for every skin unlock you would make a fortune and at the same time make alot of people happy.
I know there are probably alot of people who are working towards a specific armor set just for looks. A system like this would ensure the players hard work at working for a set just for looks isn`t wasted and his investment won`t be lost if he ever decides to want a different look.
The main problem i see with the detonate mechanic of the ability is that you can cast the orb and it goes off wherever you point. The delay it takes for the detonate to become available for use exceeds the duration of the orb 99% of the time. I do find it strange that the other half of the time just hurling an orb at a group of players heals them without detonation and other times it don`t.
Would probably be alot easier to manipulate if they removed the orb skill and replaced it with a staff autoattack. That one autoattack will be an aoe heal for everyone in front of you much like the normal attack damages everything in front of you. Put it on the same cooldown as the orb as you have a more functional and reliable skill that doesn`t depend on double pressing to actuate.
I notice the same thing when I use the staff. sometimes I can cast the projectile and it will heal people and other times the projectile will pass through everyone and not do anything at all. The detonate seems to become available for use after the projectile has dissapeared but does nothing when used. Maybe using it from father away so it has more airtime so you could have time to use the detonate would might help. So I tried that and the projectile seems to dissapear before it even gets close to people making the cast a waste.
Having the projectile just do an aoe heal on contact when it hits a friendly would probably be alot easier. Because when the skill is healing for me when I cast it, I am not detonating it.
Apparently you misunderstood my comment and took offense to it instead. And no, protection won`t absorb what a focus block will. Protection reduces incoming damage by 1/3. the focus blocks 3 full attacks no matter what the damage by 100%. Wait till you do some of the crazy events in Orr. Or fight certain mobs that will chain 3-4 attacks that you can only dodge 2 of because your stamina is gone. Or my personal favorite event, Mr Chan and his outpost full of embers that spam aoe ground damage everywhere you step! The little outpost overun by tars is fun too cause they spam projectiles and aoe ground damage and root you. You will also be in for a big suprise when you do the last part of your personal story chain. I won`t spoil that though.
I’m a level 80 Guardian and I’ve played all of the events and dungeons. Wall of Reflection and SoA stop the projectiles. Strafing and dodging does the rest. I played through all of Orr with Hammer and Mace/Shield on swaps. In the dungeons, I run Mace/Shield and Scepter/Focus for the first run through then adjust sets as needed in later runs once I know the areas.
As for you “chaining attack” enemies, the ones that give issues are the ones with knockdown, knock-back, etc. Use your stability utility skills for these. Stand Your Ground is amazing for these.
At this point, I wish we had the ability to link to our characters on a website like ANET said we would have…
I myself don`t have a problem with knockbacks or anything I would need Stand Your Ground for really. Might be some dungeons that would benefit from it but I have no reason to do them at this point. Wall of relection is nice but since its on a fairly long cooldown and the mobs can pass through it to continue the projectile attacks I don`t slot it. And since they normally choose to use the projectiles at shorter intervals the projectile negaters are like a one shot deal and you have to dodge the rest. And if it launches more then 2 attacks and you dodge those third will 9 times out of 10 hit you.
But I solo alot and like to try and kill vets and champs by myself. If you have some people with you or a group you have a little more space because you aren`t the only one the mobs will be focusing on.
Strafing for me works sometimes. But for the most part even sidestepping or strafing don`t always avoid the projectiles. They lock on and home in on you. Perfect example of that is trying to solo a giant in cursed shore. All the grubs he throws down chain spam projectiles that every once in awhile you can sidestep. But for the most part they will home in on you and you`ll take the damage and dot no matter what you do. You can only dodge twice and that only helps so much when you have a dozen mobs chain spamming you.

I`m sorry. I am really confused by what you`re saying. But reducing damage by 100% has always been better then 33%. A block will completely negate the damage from an incoming hit. Protection just reduces it by 1/3. No matter how you use it one, one reduces damage and the other blocks damage alltogether. What I am trying to say is that that the protection buff for the shield should be tossed and the 3 block buff be given to the shield with aoe effect. Then your shield as actually a true functional shield.
I use a mace/shield 99% percent of the time I am online. The other 1% is when I need to kite then it`s scepter/focus or staff if I feel like doing support instead of damage.
If protection hits 3 people (which you can do) then technically 100% of the damage of one attack on AE attacks/conditions is absorbed each hit for the duration. That’s all I’m saying. Yes in a one on one situation you’re absolutely correct, again that’s not why I use the shield – it’s the party tool.
You have me so confused as to what you are trying to say. Are you trying to say that if my protection hits 3 people that it will completely absorb the damage of one attack?
If that is what you are saying you are incorrect. You do not get multiple stacks of extra -33% just for hitting other players with it. When you cast the buff, whoever it hits gets the flat 33% damage reduction for 5 seconds. An aoe that lasts 5 seconds or 3 full blocks would probably do alot better job. Because for one that is 3 attacks right off the bat you don`t have to worry about the damage from. With a reduction buff you are still taking damage but just 1/3 less then max.
The drops from events don`t seem to be nerfed. I see people exploiting bugged events all the time that are just farming for drops. What they did nerf the droprate of normal world mobs. An example would be to try and collect small teeth from skelk. You can kill a few and get some teeth and after a few minutes they just stop dropping anything alltogether for however long they are programmed to.
If you played from headstart and noticed how many mats you had accuired the first 2 weeks of the game to the current state, you would really notice the difference.
How. On. Earth. the shield has more defense than the focus? Please? Someone enlight me, I have played my Guardian only 254 hours. If the Shield is a better defensive weapon than the Focus then I must have overlooked something really big right.
.
Well the shield is giving you over 900 more armor and 60 defense and it`s all passive. You don`t need to activate all that added armor and it`s not on a cooldown. If you really don`t spec your character to exclusivly use a shield it will be tough to see the benefit. I take way more damage using the scepter/focus setup in melee range then I do when I have m/s equipped. Been playing since headstart and been 80 for weeks tried every other weapon combination in the game but keep going back to the mace/shield everytime. I have tried multiple stat combinations and trait and skill combinations. For pure 24/7 mitigation the shield cannot be beat hands down. The focus is awsome so save your hide every 45 seconds and the blind is nice every 25 seconds. But inbetween those cooldowns you are missing the passive protection that a shield equipped gives unless you are swapping back and fourth between the 2 sets and weaving the skills together that is something you can do as well.
As I said, though, it is possible for protection to absorb as much (or even more) than the blocks. It really depends on how its used.
And that is why I prefer the shield over the focus. There’s no doubt FOR YOU the focus is superior in reducing incoming damage. The shield is the party tool. My guardian is durable enough as is.
I`m sorry. I am really confused by what you`re saying. But reducing damage by 100% has always been better then 33%. A block will completely negate the damage from an incoming hit. protection won`t absorb what a focus block will.
Well that would depend entirely on how many people benefit from the protection.
The focus block is only for you.
Well I replied with that because he thinks that protection can absorb the same as a block. Two different things. You either get hit for less or you don`t get hit at all. The block would be more suited to the shield and given either the same cone effect or a true aoe effect for 3 blocks in the next 5 seconds. The shield can allready help defend against projectiles, knockback, and heal. Having a block buff using the same timer or one a little longer would make the shield feel more like a shield.
From what I understand, shield stance blocks 100% damage for a complete duration. Giving us a 3 blocker for the shield wouldn`t hurt them. I may be misinformed about shield stance though.
Curious after reading most of the comments here. People are complaining about the cone direction of the #4 skill on the shield. Why are you standing in a line with everyone you’re fighting with? If the boss is attacking you, everyone else should be behind it so that they don’t get caught in AOE swings etc. Therefore you should almost always be facing your group, or at least the members that need the buff. Am I the only one doing this? I can’t be..
You must be an oldschool eq player. There are very few bosses in the game you can straight tank. You run in do your damage and try to run back out before it queues up it`s next attack. And even before the next power attack it can let lose with a lesser attack that can hurt you pretty bad too if you aren`t careful. Or you just fight with ranged weapons, which makes it so much easier.
The point is, in alot of upper lvl content some events require people to be constantly moving in erratic directions. Nobody is always clumped together, they apread out. So the cone effect doesn`t always hit everyone you want it to. Making it an aoe buff would help it alot.
I’d rather switch to Hammer than a Focus set for defense. It offers a lot more control and
.
I am in no way making fun of what he wrote. But since the hammer can indeed spam protection I can see why alot of people would feel this way. Now think about that. If you had to go defensive, wouldn`t the first thing that comes to your mind be equipping a shield? Not a hammer, not a focus, but a shield!
What I wouldn`t have given to be able to have an active block like ddo and radierZ has.
First off, I never said I felt the Hammer had more defense than the Shield. I said I’d use Hammer before I’d switch to a Focus set. Shield is the number one defensive offhand. I explicitly stated that Focus was a lot less defensive than Focus. My comment about Hammer was meant purely to put into perspective how crazy it is to put Focus above Shield.
Mace/Focus is utterly useless compared to Mace/Shield. Whatever you can block with Focus #5 you can easily absorb with Shield’s #4 protection or simply dodge/strafe. Now bring SoA’s defensive and supportive utilities into the picture and it’s really common sense to use Shield over Focus not the other way around.
Defensively: Mace/Shield > Hammer > Any/Focus
Secondly, stop comparing GW2 with games that you could actually tank. If you’re arguing you want more block so you can tank, you’re doing it wrong. I’m actually starting to take Torch over Focus in PvE because let’s be honest, if you’re taking damage in PvE (ie: you need a block skill) you need to be dodging/strafing more.
Little point to nit-pick:
People keep saying “you can get permanent protection with Hammer”.
But that’s only if you’re ONLY using auto-attack and no other skills, never dodging, etc…
Right?
And it’s very hard to control where those gaps in protection will be. Whereas with Shield you can ALWAYS throw it up exactly when you want to negate big attacks. It’s actually QUITE impractical to keep up “permanent protection” with Hammer.
I do agree though that right now it seems like the Focus is actually a more defensive option than the Shield, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.
You do have a point to an extent. Keeping protection up while fighting anything from tough vets to bosses could be impossible in alot of situations. But for the rest of the games mobs if you don`t focus all your stats into pure dps, you can stand there and straight tank anything else with prot up for a good bit of the time. Why they didn`t give it might proc so the followup mighty blow would be enhanced is a mystery.
Also keep in mind when you have a focus equipped you are losing 900 armor or so and 60+ defense. Those 3 blocks are only available every 40 seconds or so where with the shield you have the permanant armor and def that makes a huge difference in survivability. I still think the best idea would be to replace the shields prot buff with the block from the focus and just give the focus the abilty to summon a pack of feral cattle for 30 seconds since it looks like a cow bell.

Frustrated with how easy it is for players to train mobs on other players.

Thankfully on my server when someone does train you it is usually by accident. The person will usually stop and come back to help you if he sees mobs that were chasing him started attacking you. That`s pretty good community behavior and i like it that way.
I remember those times in eq. Karnors castle, haha TRAIN LEFT!
Well after the server went down earlier we were taking Arah and the eye got me twice because I zigged when i should have zagged. Anyway, after the event I went to an outpost to sell and repair and noticed that my repair bill for those 2 knockdowns seemed alot cheaper then it normally would be. Two knockdowns on lvl 80 gear usually was 3-4 silver where after the server was brought back up it was 1 silver and some copper.
Not sure if the they adjusted the repair cost but it just seemed cheaper. If they did adjust it I would like to say thank you and that I appreciate it.
You know, years ago when I led a guild in a different game I had the “a guild that plays together stays together attitude”. And I would actually get mad at guild members if they chose to group or quest with people outside the guild. I mean after all we were supposed to be a family right? That and I also know how other guild recruiters like to operate and try and steal members, which I `ve seen people do for 10 years or so. But in the end you really can`t force people or you will drive them away.
Now I can see and totally understand the loyalty thing and I am all for that. I also think that people should be able to have a toon in one guild and one in another BUT they should not be able to turn on represent or stand down. Either you join a guild and remain in it with a character or your are not in the guild at all.
I think the represent option for your account was decent idea. There is no reason every single one of your characters has to be in the same guild unless you want them to be.
But if you are having problems with people just leaving and joining other guilds, you are probably better off without those types of people in your guild.
You know i got 96% map completion in gw1. I thought i was pretty thorough going through it once hitting every nook and cranny I can squeeze myself into. But I wasn`t about to go through it all again to find wherever that evasive 4% was hiding.
Perhaps a world map option to focus on a specific part of the map thats shows whats completed maight be useful to help narrow things down.
Well i never said the shield was terrible. After all i do commit to using one about 99% of my playtime. I do find the skills useful in thier own way. I use the bubble heal as a regular back up heal and it works good for healing everyone around you. The protection buff is nice but since it is on a longer cooldown It would probably be better to swap that out for the solid 3 block group buff for 5 seconds instead of the -33 damage. I would gladly sacrifice the damage from the protection skill for the block skill. But to me it wouldn`t make sense to use a focus even for the 3 blocks for melee because I would then I lose 900 armor or so. I use the scepter/focus setup when i need to kite or get away. But I am mace/shield all the way.
