I see the people claiming: “The Shield should be for blocking,” the same way I see people who think guns can’t be magic. They’re stuck in a traditional fantasy mindset for no reason at all.
.
Ynna, I`m sorry but the shield has been made for blocking since it`s invention. When people didn`t block with it, it was hung on the wall because it really had no other purpose. Just imagine how the roman legion, atheneans, or spartans would have done if thier shields had long cooldowns on thier arrow bubbles or protection buffs instead of blocking ability. Allthough, a phalynx all throwing out the protection buff at once with all the aoe damage would be pretty neat.
But seriously, a shield is indeed intended for blocking. That is the draw to wanting to use the thing. Now when I can “Magically” block 3 attacks with a cowbell and not “Magically” block attacks with a shield, you kinda see the jack backwards direction anet decided to go in when coming up for ideas to try and make item skills interesting.
Veteran Abominations with frenzy.
Please get off your high chair and talk to the rest of us like we might already have an understanding of the game. Insulting.
Hammer protection is not optimal compared to shield, there’s no argument. People have to be on top of it, and in dungeons that’s just too much of a risk.
Well let`s be honest here. Even though it might not be optimal in your eyes does not change that it can indeed be spammed every few seconds. The shield with traits is on a 24 second cooldown. For the shield being the icon of defensive play, you could straight tank a mob with a hammer and have protection up for close to two seconds every 5 seconds or so. with the shield you can get it once every 24 seconds for 5 seconds. How exactly does that balance out?
Now if you were designing a game, would you give a 2h weapon the ability to spam a defensive buff that a true defensive tool like a shield could not?
Well, I have used a mace/shield from lvl 1-80 and I do think it could be improved upon. The little arrow bubble buff was decent even though the cooldown is pretty long. I do think the protection buffs recast times should be reduced. If a hammer can spam that prot buff then why would a shield, that is the epitome of defensive play not designed to be more protective then a 2 handed weapon?
I often think to myself what anet is thinking when they design some of the skills and the way they choose to initate them. I have a focus in my offhand for my scepter slot that will give me 3 blocks. How in the world does a cowbell on a twisted stick manage to pull this off?
I think by the time I hit I 80 I had earned about 21 gold. Playing the tp is dificuly sometimes because nobody want to actually pay a decent price for crafting mats. Some people do but for the most part you see like 3 orders placed for 500 of of a lvl 400 mat and they wanna pay 40 copper. Well I will put up an amount for 1 silver each. Which i think is more then fair for lvl 400 smithing material. then next thing you know 20 other people are selling 2000 of the same mat for 1 copper above order price. It`s like WTF! I am losing money trying to sell these mats becuase everyone just undercuts everyone else. You know the system is kitten up when you see an item that sells for 10 copper to a vendor is being ordered for 5 copper per and you see a bunch of sellers with listings for 6 copper per !
The only time i make decent coin is when i get a gold drop and I can sell it on the tp for 13-20 silver. and I may get 2-3 golds a week if I am lucky. Nobody wants the blues and most of the greens are ordered for below vendor cost on my server and there are 100`s of listing of the same items for sale for one copper above vendor value. It don`t make sense.
Well. The lack of traditional endgame content doesn`t bother me that much. I can still go and kill in other zones and still have somewhat of a challenge. Even though at 80 there really isn`t a point. I can focus on completing the map or tradeskilling. I like to explore and uncover things so that part isn`t bad. I usually always crafted in games up until I crafted in aion and then after I started to hate crafting after that.
What I would like to see is some sort of character progression system for pve. I don`t wvw knowing that i will probably lose more money then I would be able to make so that`s out of the question. But I notice even after you reach lvl 80 tyou keep getting skill points. Maybe possibly in the future they could introduce some kind of AA type system that would let you spend 5 skill points to get 1 extra trait point. Let the players build up thier characters to increased power, after all if it a “play your way type system” is it not? At least I would have something more to do and some more goals to look forward to besides just uncovering a map or an endless mat farming experience.
I also think it`s funny that alot of people will always tell others to go play other games if they don`t like this or that about this one. If I was Anet I would listen carefully to what the people are asking for. Because the diehards that sit there and play for extended sessions per day are usually the ones who will sink the most money into a game because they have something to do and they like what they are doing. And we know Anet wants to make some profit with tp.
On the way to 80 I had a blast doing the story. I would just like to see more progression, not make alts to keep going through the same thing.
I only use the mace/shield with scepter/focus for range myself. My damage isn`t the greatest but I have noticed a huge increase in my durabilty in combat. Now I wouldn`t want to sacrifce that after getting used to it.
Also I personally find ridiculous that a necromancer has 2x times guardian’s hp PLUS death shroud.
Seriously? Do necros have that much hp? I`m sitting at about 15k hp atm. I haven`t experimented with any other classes besides a warrior to lvl 4 or so. Are you sure this is correct?

Keelin,
It probably has something to do with the Virtues, self-combos, AND utility skills you mentioned.
And if you want to do “primarily damage”, then your survivability and support would naturally be a little lackluster.
Now on to the point…
I want to use the Scepter, really I do. I haven’t tried a high crit build with it, so there is that.
That being said… it seems to just lack punch. I’ve tried to use it several times in WvW and I just can’t do much with it.
Indeed try the scepter with a high crit %. The projectiles still slow as hell but you`ll be doing close to double damage every hit.
… But if I had to guess why it would be that way is because of our ability to survive and support the way we do …
But this is baffling. What is this magical ability to survive that everyone assumes is there all the time?
Is it the shields? Is it the shouts? What really defines it?
If i take shields and shouts and i want to do primarily damage that’s wasted slots right there (Exception being one shout or so to break stuns). Not to mention that i probably won’t have the traits to support those properly.
Those slots i have dedicated to defense can’t be used for offense. It seems to me that people assume that we somehow magically posses this additional survivability that no one can actually pin down. Surely it does not come from the Virtues?
Well I myself specced full toughness and precision and I can take a pretty good beating. A little while ago I just stood toe to toe with a champ mob on a skillpoint and the archer that was with me was downed 4x when he got aggro. I was never in any trouble healthwise even when the adds repopped the 5 times they did while we were killing it. Some help cma eabout halfway through and sped things up a bit.
I`m not sure how he built his archer but he was getting downed in 2 hits while I stood blow for blow the duration of the fight. I think if I was specced more offensive I probably wouldn`t be able to do that. I have only played a guardian so I `m unsure how lighter armor classes would do the same thing without focusing on evasion.
Well ,you know and I know that since they removed the trinity system and gave everyone equal footing, there shouldn`t be any reason to have a weaker ranged attack then anyone else. But if I had to guess why it would be that way is because of our ability to survive and support the way we do and because we wear heavy armor.
I know it`s jack backwards in a game that is supposed to be any class can do anything type system. But this what anet calls balance for a non traditional type mmo that still uses certain tradional type mmo mechanics.
Monuru, you have completely missed the point of everything I said. You play your way I`ll play mine.
Chii, You are correct. I totally forgot about that. Good call. I was thinking about my mace symbol when i read what you wrote.
Well if you turned it into symbol you would have to cast it right your feet. The best part about smite is that you can plant it down from a distance. You don`t want to be in melee range fighting with a scepter. Well maybe if you prefer a shield, but i used to use a torch then decided to switch to the focus for +3 blocks and the blind. But when i use the scepter I will normally go it when I don`t want to be in melee range. I will use mace/shield otherwise. If I`m with a group doing an event I`ll switch to staff for support.
I wouldn`t mind if the aoe area was a little larger though. I think the only real changes they could probably make are adding another effect every few attacks or increasing the root duration a little bit, or possible a dot on the root like setting them on fire or something for 3 seconds.. Aside from the slow bolt speed and horrible aim it`s not too bad. Not sure what else they could do for the weapon without completely overhauling it`s entire skillset. I wouldn`t want tlose the root but they could probably imporve it a little. I like smite because it has a decent recast timer and gives decent damage of rthe cooldown along with being able to be cast anywhere. The auto attack could possibly give a might buff every 4-5 attacks for a second or so. Maybe a blind. Could even increase burn intensity by 50% for 3 seconds every 5 attacks. Could be anything.
if the arguement is of an organized group wouldnt it be fair to assume that the opposing group is also an organized group?
With this in mind and opposing organized group probably would check what aoe it is since it would only take a split second, before dodging away.
and if they do dodge, an organized group would not dodge towards a cluster
I didn`t say it would work everytime. You can only put your hand in the cookie jar so many before it gets slapped. You gotta have numerous different tactics you change up at the drop of a hat so your oppenents don`t deem you predicable. No matter how organized you think you or your team is, there will always be someone better who will pull rabbits out of thier hats when you least expect it and suprise the crap out of you.
Good to see another old head still playing. I think removing the traditional trinity system and letting everyone be so self sufficient kind of hurt the social part of the game. Unless you are looking to join a dungeon group you can play through the entire game from lvl 1-80 and see not a single person make a peep while you are out doing whatever. People always yap in map chat but when you are playing people will come and assist to kill quest mobs and aid you in doing a heart but once it`s done everyone usually disperses without a single word ever being said the whole time.
A group don`t need me to tank for them or they don`t need me to heal for them. They can do everything themselves so there is no incentive for interaction most of the time. Just seems like people will chip in to help only because they know they get part of the reward too.
But hey, if you aren`t too ahead in the game. Make a toon on Anvil Rock. I`m allready 80 and a little bored and wouldn`t mind having a buddy around my age to go through the game with again.
Sure, why not? And even if it didn`t work it would still do damage so it is a win/win situation. But you are still missing the point. It is still a good skill in self. That was only a example of how an organized group could put it to use. Take it for it`s worth I guess. Sooner or later a server will get sick of the zerg and start playing smarter using more guerilla tactics and when they do get thier act down, they will steamroll.
No. Smite in itself is pretty nice and does decent damage and hits multiple targets. But so do alot of other classes skills that just do more damage. People are getting conditioned in this game to start rolling away when they see ground damage thrown down. So you throw a few smites down to fake the team out and while they burn thier endurance the real aoe damage can throw down and hit everyone because they are too tired to dodge. You could even experiment with different methods and have a few guardians throw down smites at the wings of the ranks because you have a good a chance of probably half the guys you are hitting are going to roll inward and cluster. Then thats when the magic begins because you could come up with aoe tactics to suck people into a deathtrap. Especially if you had a number of archers who all used that big aoe volly. Have each one space it apart a decent bit and then you are covering a massive area with blanket fire and the other team really has nowhere to go and they are mostly all crippled. It would take a ton of practice to hone those kind of techniques. But if you ever run into a large group that employs them , you are pretty much done.
That is just one example of how you could use the skill. But it`s still a great skill to use in itself for regular damage. Just all the other classes have more potent aoe`s.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
I agree with you. I just think that since the guardian is probably the most durable melee class, they don`t want to give him too much of a powerful ranged attack. If the speed was faster, the rate at which you would score hits would be like you were using a minigun and then every other class would scream for a nerf.
Even if they revised it to where every third or fourth autoattack let out a larger projectile that traveled at double the flight speed for a more powerful hit would be acceptable. They allready nerfed the autoattack damage on it so you need to rely on crits more for it to be as effective as possible. There are literally tons of things they could do to make some of the weapons more enjoyable to use while still maintaining a sense of balance and utility. They seem to choose odd directions to go in though to achieve it.
I like the scepter alot. I have more of a problem with the accuracy of the weapon myself. It has great range and good attack rate. Once you get a high enough crit % to where you are critting pretty much nearly every attack then the scepter looks a whole lot better. You can drop mobs pretty quickly. I imagine in a wvw situation a few guardians with scepters going on a shackle rotation on called targets or having people time some bane signets could probably bring someone down pretty quick. Couple that with a team that is working together and all on the same page and the scepter guardian can become a serious threat.
so the pros and cons are pretty muc this.
pros
1.Fast reliable dps
2. Smite is a powerful skill. Throw in into a group of people and they start dodging using thier stamina to be unable to evade more powerful attacks from teamates.
3. The shackles when timed right with a good lockdown crew can render pretty much anyone a certain death.
cons
1. Slow projectile speed
2. Has a problem with projectiles homing in on selected targets if anything else is close to the target.
If they added an event a few times a month where a gm operated mob would storm divinitys reach or lions arch. People would flock from every point of the map to participate and if they managed to kill it, they could get a bag with a few gold or a rare weapon that has an original gw1 skin or something. People go apesheet over that stuff.
People would want to be logged in to make sure they wouldn`t miss an event. Just imagine a giant rabid doylak rampaging through lions arch being controlled by a gm who is one shotting everyone. The gm could even summon player to him that are doing the most damage or players doing the least, completely random. On top of that have the gm taunt everyone during the battle calling people out by name and talking smack. Those would be events i would live for. That would break the boredom for sure.
Well they could tone down the damage multiplier on the attacks slightly and reetime the buffs to match the new value. You would still be giving the same boons over the same duration pretty much. You can allready sit there and keep protection up for like 98% of the time it takes to complete the chain anyway so that wouldn`t be an issue.
it could still be spammed. Which is ridiculous anyway to give a hammer a spammable prot buff and yet the shield gets a 30 second cooldown prot buff. But that`s an argument for a whole other thread.
Lets just say if you were critting for 4k, after the changes your crits would drop to like anywhere from 3700 to 3900 or so. You would lose a little bit of top end damage but gain a more consistant and reliable attack rate. Now the people who love seeing big number crits would have a heart attack but in reality they would be gaining one free swing with the chance to land an additional 3700-3900 damage if they hit the keys fast enough. Which would fall more in line with what a heavy blunt trauma object should be doing.
Lots of modern MMOs imposed the “carrot on a stick” rule because they realized that their games would stagnate over time, and they needed a way to keep people running
.
Well at least those games had longevity. I would say the pve aspect of the game has become stagnant allready and the game isn`t a month into release yet. Hitting lvl 80 came pretty fast going through the zones doing the events and that was great. i felt like it wasn`t grindy. And I am glad it was that way because if the lvling was slower, by the time you got to 80 and saw how the game just flatlines, you would be smacking yourself for investing so much time in it.
Now granted, the gameplay is alot of fun and they took an extreme amount of time to handcraft a gigantic world that is the most impressive of any mmo i ever played over the past decade. Sure, you can go back to other lower zones and explore more. But you will know that will never get anything of use from them. You are just playing sightseer. There has to be a driving factor to make you want to continue. You cannot progress your characters strengths anymore. All you can do is rinse and repeat rewardless content over and over. They just gave you a huge gameworld so you have more variety of places to go. But in every zone it`s the same events repeating themselves every 5-10 minutes with something big spawning every hour or so.
I have completed a karma god armor set and have good weapons. Where do I go from there? I could turn my focus to crafting and spend the next few months gathering mats to max a skill. Don`t sound very exciting. How long can you play a game that has no goals or rewards before you get bored?
If they added some boss specific loot to some of the dungeons it would really make them worth doing. God bless the poor souls grinding tokens for an armor set. I don`t envy them. But if they spread some max lvl green uniques around some of the dungeons, they would be bustling with activity. Because people love the treasure hunt.
I love the game. I really do. But I think they could of done a few things differently to turn an amazing game into a perfect game. Some people may think it`s perfect as is, and that`s cool. everyone has a preference and a vision of what thier ideal mmo would be like. But from someone who has played mmo`s for over 10 years you kind of get the feel for what makes a game worth playing for a long time. A few tweaks here and there and this game could put nails in world of warcrafts coffin.
Hey today I just found out they have invisible type bags. It`s like the equipment packs we had in gw1. Whatever items you put in the bag will stay in that bag and never get moved to another bag. Look for an 8 slot safe box on the auction house if you aren`t a blacksmith. they are only around 63 copper. 10 bronze ingots and 3 crystal dusts will unlock the recipie at armorsmith lvl 25
Yeah me too. Sometimes I can`t even see my own character in some fights. I`m standing there swinging at air.
Well. The true trinity is gone but you can still support each other to make things easier. Increasing your healing can only benifit you. It will increase how much health you regen per tick and make your healing skills heal for more.
I play a guardian but since i cannot tank blow for blow with alot of bosses. I can whip out my staff and buff everyone else and throw 2k+ heals on them every cooldown so they can focus doing the damage. That 2k heal might not seem like much but if you are stuck with a dot on you, it can make the different between a knockdown and surviving. People stick to me like glue when they see me running around bosses with my staff out. Haha that sounded funny. But seriously, it`s true.
Well for being the most powerful melee weapon, there sure are alot of people who don`t like it. That in itself should be a hint that the pause in 1 chain is pretty absurd. There are plenty ways they could balance it to make it more acceptable. The question is do they want to.
All the weapons should give smooth performance. I use them all on my guardian except for the hammer because it`s not smooth or fluid. It feels clunky like it`s working more against me then for me.
I know if I were a game developer, which I love modding games btw. I wouldn`t be happy until I felt that all the weapons performed smoothly and felt like an extension of your arm. If I were a gw2 dev I would be content with the current guardian weapons and fine tune them more over time. But I would have sat in front of 3dsmax or maya for days straight without sleep trying to srtraighten out that hammer.
Thank you. I appreciate it. I could make those just needed to unlock it.
Well no. We are talking about a difference here. Like if I need mats to lvl up smithing and i need small teeth, I can gokill low lvl skelks or drakes or whatever. but afer a few kills they stop dropping teeth and you need an awful lot of them if you want to persue a crafting profession. So you can either go out and kill the mobs yourself in which they stop dropping what you need after a few kills or you buy them from the tp. I myself would much rather prefer going out and gather what I need then having to resort to buying it from others.
And there is really no reason to have to go to another spot on the map to kill the same mobs for the same drop because the current location stops giving you what you need.
(edited by Banewrath.5107)
Well, I have the gloves, shoulder and boots from the human protectors set so far. Just to get that I had to sell every single drop I got in the game that I couldn`t use or equip including all crafting mats from 1-80. The legs are 25 gold and the breastplate is 30 gold. I`m also just getting these for the skin. On launch all the lvl 80 armor parts were 20 gold each then a week or so ago they adjusted the prices. Still an awful lot.
I put alot of effort into trying to like the hammer. I picked it many times on my way to 80 and tried to get used to the slow pause. I would even of been happy if they put mighty blow on a slightly longer cooldown so you could mb every 2 1 chains as long as the pause wasn`t there. So may cool looking hammers that I would want to have but won`t bother because the weapon just don`t feel right to me.
I wonder if those magic find boosters they sell let items keep dropping.
I`m a little confused. Is an invisible bag like the equipment packs from gw1? If so where do you get them?
Well you would have the option to toggle it on or off like in the original.
Keep reporting them. Until they get rid of the free trial ,the spammers will always be able to make new accounts after the current ones get blocked or banned. But if they have to keep buying the game everytime they get banned, sooner or later they will stop.
I never played any other game that had capes as nice as they had in gw1. Those animators knew what they were doing.
My server usually comes in 2nd place and I never lost money in WvW. I usually get 2 times the money my repairs cost. If you’re dying to the point you’re losing money then you’re doing something wrong. Stop it, that’s what the repairs are for. Instead of whining about it you should change your play style so you don’t die so much.
protip: don’t fight when you’re outnumbered.
I really don`t think penalizing the player by hitting him with a repair fee is incentive to try and get better. Pvp should be looked at as a fun thing to do instead of worrying about how much coin you could possibly make or lose. Eventually the people who aren`t that great will get better, no need to get all true grit on them.
I’m not sure if this is suppose to be a suggestion or a complaint.
It`s both. It means take a look at the problem and please make it right.
I think an easier fix would be allow us to sell the item back to the vendor for the karma you spent as long as you do it within like 5 minutes or so. That way you can correct your mistake and still not exploit it to get karma by selling your old geat to get new gear.
Ha! someone beat me to it!
I notice while kiting in a circle and using your mouse to guide your camera that you autotarget mobs if your camera happens to pass over them. So kiting 2 or 3 mobs can turn into a group of mobs if you use your mouse to guide you. Because everytime you go to turn and follow the circle you start hurling ranged attacks and whatever else is in the area.
I wonder if they ever do fix it, will the people who allready got shafted get some kind of talisman like they had in the original game? Hell would be even nice to get a certificate for 1 free piece of lvl 80 cultural armor instead of the 5 junk bags.
Haha I am on anvil rock, good thing I don`t wvw then.
You really shouldn`t need a reward for helping make your gaming environment a better place for everyone. Get rid of the free trial, then at least the gold sellers will have to keep paying 60 bucks for the game after they get banned everytime. That will stop them.
What exactly do you get for the little points you get when you complete slayers lines and stuff?
I use a scepter alot on my guardian when I need to go ranged. I have noticed that I can click on a mob thats far away and tap my attack to send a bolt at him. Well ,the bolt will hit whatever else is around the mob BUT the mob I am targetting 90% of the time. Especially if the mobs are like 5 feet apart and you have the one click targeted and start to fire, all your bolts go to the mobs next to him that you didn`t have targetted.
I have even had targeted a mob ahead of me while a mob was on my side, I still have the target ahead targetted, and I am facing forward but my scepter bolts are doing a 90 degree turn to kill the mob next to me. Please look into this.
How come you can do wvw and earn gold but if you do hearts or de`s you get like a silver if you are lucky? This is an honest question because I have not done wvw yet because of the repair costs. Are you guys sinking like 8 hours straight to get that 1-2 gold or is this just what you get for winning one match?
Well I finally killed the dragon and went back to fort trinity for the celebration. I was kind of wondering what anet would do special like they did in gw1, like maybe a unique weapon like the campaign greens they had. I was pretty hyped when I got the 5 loot bags, I imagined something really special to reward the time I invested doing the personal story. Then I opened the 5 bags and was like WTH! A handful of lvl 20-36 greens and a lvl 80 junk blue!
I laughed to myself and thought, that sneaky Anet, the real reward will come after I leave the zone haha. So I left the zone, and I stood there a minute. Nothing happened.
So I ran around a little bit to see if anything triggers and nothing happened.
So I figured Trehearne! My main man wouldn`t let down! After all I am the commander of the pact, he would take care of me! But he wasn`t anywhere at the fort. I guess it`s for the better I suppose, He probably woulda just told me the only thing I could get was either Jack or sheet and Jack left town.
I think the hammer does awsome damage and has great utility. But that huge pause on the 1 strike puts me off from wanting to use it. And btw how come the hammer can spam protection so fast but a mace/shield user has like a 30 second cooldown? Since that setup is geared more towards defense, wouldn`t it make more sense to be able to protect quicker then a hammer?
Filthy necromancer, you play with corpses and then wonder why nobody wants to play with you. Just kidding. I too started with eq back in 02 and there hasn`t ever been another game like it since. I agree with what you say about the pve. The orr maps are more challenging when you get to those. You can`t go 3 steps without aggroing something it feels like. Some of the events can be extemely difficult as well and feel like a plane of sky wipe. I have still yet to kill the champion risen megladon, the thing is a destroyer!
I`d like to see some kind of aa system implemented for pve or be able to use accumulated skill points to be invested in traits past 80. Or anything that gives you incentive to play besides grinding gold for armor skins. I still have a huge % of the map to explore, but because I have everything I need right now, the incentive isn`t really there to push me towards the places I haven`t been yet. I just explore the places more slowly and try to focus on making some coin ofr my set.
I am all in favor for a hard game, I am not in favor for a boring grind of a game that GW 2 is not suppose to be. Better they fix what they advertise the game to be so it’s consistent with what they promised.
The reason I quit GW 1 is because they promised a game with no grind then I got to lvl 20 and I had to grind to get my elite skills. not cool. false advertisement so I quite the game. I hope that doesn’t happen here.
How was getting elites a grind? You looked on the wiki which bosses had the skill you wanted, then you got a signet of capture and went and got the skill. That was one of the most fun parts of the game.
