short and sweet: No i detest it
also OP.. just play the loyal soldier PS as a charr and you get to them eventually…and thats also why i do detest it myself. Degraded from a centurio to a scrapper.. thanks a bunch a-net

I don’t know why but. . .
I LOVE THE NAME! Can’t wait for the POI this week. I bet it’ll be fantastic!
As a charr i detest it. Beeing a scrapper (and its indeed originating from the charr scrappers) is a punishment for beeing consistently insubordinate, unreliable, or troublesome and there is zero respect for a scrapper in the legions. A scrapper is seen as an untrustworthy troublemaker…and last time i checked i was an iron legion centurio and commander of the pact aswell high ranked member of an order and sort of a big deal all arround. Beeing a scrapper is basically the opposide of that and its quite a big punch under the belt line to be fully honest.

Someone on Reddit has something real interesting to say about it from a lore perspective. I’m not into RP, but I found this to be a good point of view and if this came from Anet and not just the author’s own ideas that’s a pretty dynamic way to evolve the lore in game.
Basically words change meaning over time and Scrapper could be evolving from a negative term to a more positive one. This happens in real life all the time. Read here (if you can read French you may be able to get more context from the article itself):

i did read it and its sorta kinda stupid….cause since when does convict labour become something to look up to? You dun goofd hence you do it and there is nothing glorios about that. A charr scrapper dun goofd big time to become that, cause charr take their military stuff pretty darn serios. Where is the honor in that?
Sure.. some elite spec names are (depending on who you ask) stupid…like the dragon hunter, we all sorta hunt dragons afterall. But how does beeing punished for beeing a nuisance to an army inspires other races?“oy look at these scrapper charrs overthere, they are so awesome how they do convict labour cause they are bad soldiers. I wonder what this warband did to get this far? Ignore orders? Run from battle? Wow man i gotta join their cause to be the least respected members of the charr army… cant imagine anything better. They clearly know whats up.”
Really now man.. thats not inspiring, thats like i would say to you “hey look at these guys with their orange vests besides the police officer picking up garbage cause they get punished for their offences to the law. Arent they amazing doing the stuff that a judge said they gotta do?”
Nah man.. really nope. The name “scrapper” is not bad on its own.. but the meaning behind it is a really mean move from the devs. Atleast in my eyes.
Scrappers aren’t convicts.
You might want to read the link that I found for you, to me most of your post doesn’t make sense without the context of that link.
At this point I’m convinced you’re just trolling lol. There’s no way people take the name of a skill tree this seriously, even if you are a role player. Them naming the Specialization line -Scrapper- means what to your character? Nothing. You taking that line has no significant meaning on your role played character. You can still be a “Centurion-Mega-Avatar of Knightly Magnificence-Brightest Jewel of Tyria” from the Iron Legion.
in fact i DO take this seriosly. I might be alone on this one.. but i sorta kinda hoped for some form of dignity for the engi class for once. A name thats sorta kitten …like chronomancer, reaper, berserker effin druid i mean they are perfectly fitting. Heck even dragon hunter is better. They clearly give of the feel the class advanced towards something awesome. A time bender, a hellish scythe swinging master of the dead, a very angry dude that twists your arms out of your joints and lights himself on fire and so on… and what does engi get? A scrap collector…yea… wouldnt want anything that says “yeap i surely do have advanced my craft” Instead of advancing the materials and technology(maybe even on the level of pact technology cause that would make sence given that the pact joined forces and sorta use now stuff designed with elements from all races) the engineer works with to do his stuff he starts using junk and names himself after one of the lowest ranks of the charr army? Yay? Hype? Hell no. You got no idea how often the nope meter broke on this one for me.
Why not Besieger? Forgemaster? Machinist? Pioneer? Constructor? Demolisher? Metallurgist like hinted in the PS with taimi? Mechanic? Handyman? Inventor? Anything thats not so degrading and in my opinion just a kick into the gears.
I don’t know why but. . .

I don’t mind it (especially since I will mostly see the translated version ingame) but I think it’s a bit odd that they chose a term that is already used in lore. See Scrapper.
“applied as a label for any warband which is consistently insubordinate, unreliable, or troublesome. These warbands are low within charr society and are commonly given little respect.”
Yea.. thanks i guess >_>
Hey, they are a respectable bunch. And a fun one too. Have you played a Charr’s loyal soldier personal story? Despite having debilitating injuries, instead of living off welfare or resorting to crime, they do whatever they can to contribute to the Legions. They are proud of what they do, even though they have this stigma. Those who look down upon them are the real “scraps” you know what I’m saying?
yea… i sure do love to be degraded from an iron legion centurio to a scrapper… thanks obama. My guess thats just the devs pulling stuff out of their…backsides to justify why the engineer technology we use in kits and stuff looks like garbage from a scrapyard… No this makes me really salty, specially as charr player. Isnt enough that i got my glory stolen by a darn salad on legs AND then got degraded to a babysitter for an off brand destiny edge wannabe kids club…no.. now im a scrapper too rather then the pride of the iron legion….
(edited by Basaltface.2786)
Ok so to be fair… mortar isn’t horrible, I actually run it now. It has good point covering applications and if you are condi based can be a good lead in. Also in a group melee you can drop it on the mass and really cause havoc. The tool belt skill can have good blast finisher use too, and be a way to control an area, or place over a downed opponent, etc.
I actually very much enjoy mortar… would like it more if it was 28% stronger or whatever, but still it is a nicely thought out kit (especially since I dislike nades).
Its not horrible.. but its certainly NOT a solid ranged option in any case. Slow projectiles with rather low damage. My untraited rifle does more damage then the mortar and i dont need to aim it manually AND it shoots faster. Only thing the mortar actually is good for is the fields and the toolbelt… as a ranged weapon it blows. Take nades and run closer.. or use rifle instead (imo of course)
“In all seriousness, however, the profession is one of my favorites and it has had solid long-range”
As i read this i thought which after they nerfed granades?
they gave us the mortar kit instead… oh wait they nerfed it by 28% 24 hours after release.. nevermind
AI reliance is a horrible mechanic and avoided like the plague.
I am not sure what game your playing, but when turrets were stronger, everyone and there mother was playing them in PvP. So your historically wrong to claim AI utilities are avoided so deliberately.
and thats the issue… everybody and their mom used em, made working builds that where cheesy but they worked pretty darn good. Now imagine em with drone builds.. they soooo gonna destroy the spec with nerfs you wont even know anymore what year is it once they are done with it. Look at the turrets… or look at anything that was awesome\nice\superior to what other classes could do and then look at the scrapper spec (teaser)… this is like a red piece of cloth for the nerfhammer of eternal agony that the engi devs love to swing without mercy once somebody whines about anything beeing too strong on the engi. My source? Just look what they do\did to the engi all the time over the past 3 years….or A.I related things in general.
^ yea and now you pretty much named one of the reasons why not many people play the engi. Slow (if any) fixes…cept people whine about an engi build that wrecks stuff in pvp, then they fall over their feet to fix it….in the way a wrecking ball can fix a wristwatch
reading Basaltfaces comment lets me almost feel bad for you engis. im not an engi main. i just run through all the forums sometimes and other classes have the complete opposite opinion about you. like:
engis: “we dont want hobosacks”
anet: “ok” (which as u said needed 3 years)engis “we dont like new mortar animation”
anet “ok” (but the new one is even worse)engis “turret engi is free wins for months and they do nothing”
anet “yeah” (and then they completely destroy it)engi “without speedy kits we dont have 100% swiftness without doing kitten”
anet “sry we will instantly double the swiftness on streamlined kits”for other professions it seemed like for a long time if an engi wants it he gets it. but this is clearly not the case. atm they are working on the elite specs anyways so its not the time but keep on discussing. ok ignore me and continue
engineer was even nerfed with the trait patch. anet gave us a lot of awful traits and broke a lot of our trait synergy.
…a lot puts it mildly man…
Somebody suggested a dodge effect for the rev and now it got it. Why? Cause it looks cool and nothing else.
we got a dodge effect? sweet. or you mean the evade on unrelenting assault?
i hope you mean a dodge effect like thief has that weird blurred line/noise when they evade.
check the BW3- change list in the revenant forum
I do believe they hear it… but they really seem to either not care about the class or like it a lot. I mean just look at the hobosack issue. 2.5 years on the front page, begging for a fix to be as pretty as other classes and as it came we still didnt get all that nice looking replacements…bomb kit and mortar are especially ugly\low tech looking. No matter what level you are.. your mortar is gonna look like a lvl 5 rifle..well lvl rifle skins got atleast a barrel with kitten in the front…the mokittenoes not, meanwhile the npcs get the cool looking engineer technology to use like horrik with his cannon that clearly would be a perfect mortar kit visual, bomb kit looks like a rice cooker that spawns smaller cookers and it looks really bad especially on charr. Also if we get something nice for once in a while they nerf it right after…mortar´s 28%(!!!!!!) auto attack nerf makes that obvios. Its a very slow moving projectile that can be easily dodged and got such a massive nerf without any explaination…also to this day the intended purpose of the mortar (100% projectile finish) doesnt work proper. It took a long time after the specialisation balance patch to fix the bomb kits ranges..and it STILL misses some numbers. The explosive line also doesnt provide much bomb kit related traits..specially not masters and stuff like healing bombs are just gone now without any explaination why. The magnet is broken since the dawn of time, turrets take now CONDITION damage in all game modes and are so completely useless…and yes some people did use em outside of pvp believe it or not and so much more. Do we get a “yea, yea we fix it” or a “dont worry we nerfed that thing cause it was op cause -insert reason here-”? No.. we dont. We never do, its frustrating. Only thing they seem to care about is the darn grenade kit…its like they want engineers to only use that kit. Or just look what they did to the med kit. Its clunky as all hell and its pathetic weak…especially compared to the healing turret that heals allies and the engineer a lot more then a whole KIT dedicated to healing ever could…and so on and on…
Do they talk to us like Roy does with his revenant\herald? Like he explains changes\nerfs and buffs to certain things? I may not like the revenant a lot cause of the restrictive mechanics but i like roy a lot and how passionate and cooperative he works together with his players. Within a short time the revenant went from a joke to a seriosly cool and strong class… and it was an effort of players and developers. Stuff got talked out, feedback got read and stuff got changed to make it awesome\viable and cool looking. Somebody suggested a dodge effect for the rev and now it got it. Why? Cause it looks cool and nothing else.
Id be so gratefull if the engi devs could just be like “ey guise…lets talk it out, lets see how we can get on the same level. Lets see how we can make nice visuals, fix the issues, make traits that take all skills and playstyles into account and lets talk about why we nerf or buff certain things.”
But thats gonna be a pipe dream…
eh yea… trinity isnt the deal for me either…i however like a form of soft trinity to support eachother and we got that in very class…some stronger then others but still its there. Good enough for me.
yea i find em usefull… cause leveling by hand isnt fun anymore since the NPE patch hit…even with the changes there are still so many restrictions that where not there before so yeap.. i rather collect my tomes to level a char before i ever do it again manually.
In about 12 hours we’ll have a pretty good idea (I believe mmorpg.com has the Wednesday article that will likely go up ~9am PST).
I see a lot of comparisons to Necro minions, but hardly any reference to how much improved their minion AI has been since the recent patch. Every Necro I’ve talked to (and I also agree) says minions are actually good now and pretty fun to use. If that AI is used on drones I am open minded.
Still, I would rather not see AI. We’ll have to see how it plays out though, it’s not like the elite specs so far have had predictable mechanics to them at all. It could be something completely unexpected. No need to speculate anymore though I’m going to bed and waking up to the truth
Except that AI should be kept to PvE. It get unbalanced too quickly in PvP
and in pve it aggros mobs or doesnt do what it should do and isnt liked very much either.
maybe they are “mobile banners” with upkeep mechanic? Wouldnt be that far out
I agree, I hope they don’t got the idea to let go of the steampunk theme for a more scifi theme.
I doubt it. I mean, the Forge sounds like something that would come out of Sorrow’s Furnace, that can’t be more steampunk than this.
seems its actually called scrapper…not like it changes the point you made..but i just wanted to throw that in
Before i take them id rather have this chick´s backpiece as skin.
https://d3b4yo2b5lbfy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/69e88Bandit-Boss-Flame.jpg
Cause this actually looks like there went some love into the design.
In fact i hope they bring that to the loot table of HoT…growing weary of my slickpack, need new tanks
my hunch predicts an F6 toolbelt skill that swaps out the toolbelt for a “drone remote” skillset to controll em or summon em, then they work like upkeep skills and buff stuff till their fuel runs out and if you “dismiss” em they do blast finishers or fly towards the targeted enemie and explode to do damage or spread condies..or rip boons away or stuff.
It’s ok, he still has to pay 300g for each one.
It’s an account purchase so he only had to buy it once.
Well, he still needs to gear em out and level them to be an actual threat.
Also he needs to pack their lootboxes before he sends em off so it sums up.
They might not be ai. They might all be kits that can be controlled like the ventari tablet.
Like a Ventari form per Utility Slot? That would be AMAZING. O_O
…ehhhh… that would be a lot of micromanagement….even for an engi
A little something interesting to take notice of about Forge.
The Forge Hammer attacks comes with a Rocket Attachment on the hammer when he uses a Hammer skill.
In slow motion during the HoT Trailer you can see a Rocket Attachment on the Hammer to provide the force needed for the Engi’s Hammer damage when the Forge use his Hammer Skills and it is also where the flame animation is coming from.
Seriously Anet? Rocket hammer,,,, come on,, they clearly modeled these Elite Specializations after Super Heroes,,,,
Rocket Hammer is clearly Steel from DC Comics…
I prefer anime and manga so no, it clearly is designed as a reference to battle angel alita
Steel is a super hero that was an engineer so yea…
scrapper huh… well i cant say i like that one at all
I just hope it will get a good translation in my native language.
Sappeur would be nice.
I would be totally fine with forge or forgeman or something along these lines i mean we are engineers, thats pretty darn cool and quite a big deal in the gw universe, building (in theory) airships, tanks, siege weapons and many other mechanical miracles…but kittening scrapper? Reference to our cheap looking kits, massive nerfs and constant bugs maybe? Makes sence that way.. cause we often make our builds from scrap… Subpar stuff that people throw usually on a junkyard. Yea.. good one a-net why not right away trashy or waster..isnt like id like some form of dignity.
And yes id take sappeur or pioneer or something along these lines too anytime…especially over scrapper.
Is the armor from that pic currently obtainable? o_____________o
magitech armor from the gem store… pretty much one of the very VERY view medium armors that look like they are made for engineers…whats pretty sad. Its available since 2 years now atleast and costs 800 gems. The helmet is the specialisation armor piece and isnt available atm
well magitech armor i think is okayish for an engineer…but i still think we are lacking armors that actually look like a medieval engineer – magitech looks way too futuristic for my taste…id rather want something that looks like an ork mekboy
http://cfs9.tistory.com/image/7/tistory/2008/10/06/17/35/48e9cdb8dcbf2im also curious about why they suddenly went for lightning instead of fire…interesting tough
I agree, I hope they don’t got the idea to let go of the steampunk theme for a more scifi theme.
About the “lightning instead of fire” thing …. it isn’t instead, it is both. We still get the explosive looking rocket charge we saw in the trailer, but also getting some electric devices for the hammer. As long as I get another block for my engi, I’m fine with that.
And I hope the AA of the hammer is looking quite explosive. Would really enjoy that.
If it would be me.. engi armor would look like this.. but we cant have that, generic coats only all the way…isnt like engineers would carry a kittenload of machines and tools arround…same counts btw for the other mediums.. completely different fighting styles\needs for armor. Well.. magitech atleast got some mechanical elements in its design
they usually have armors that hint more towards a certain class….i think anet also needs to think more in PARTS regarding armor – why not have a “generic” medium armor, but one part of it has a druid theme or a engi theme, so that you can mix and match and include and exclude parts from other armors – this would also encourage more style variations while still making all armors viable for everyone instead of the situation that they are either generic or too specific…
regarding lightning field…well, lightning field just isnt THAT gread… whirl finisher is kinda nice if you can stack vulnerability fast…but swiftness and daze meh…
the thing with “hinting” is that it stays rather generic. If it would be me the armors would be ALL full out profession styled. No doubt that this one here is a thief sneaking suit with knives all over the place and poison vials and satchels full of smoke bombs and that one over there is an engineer´s armor with its toolbelt full of wrenches and protective goggles while that thing over there is clearly meant for a ranger with its hunting trophies and fur hide shoulders. Less generic parts mean more distinct looks and mix and match does the rest. You can come up with so many epic looks that way. A “steampunk” thief that appreciates charr firearms and armors to aid him in battle, a norn engineer that decorates his armor with hunting trophies and mementos from hoelbrak to always have a bit of his roots with him, a ranger that prevers the more sneaky route to get to his prey and so much more.
Before i de-rail the topic too much i gonna shut up now

…what i hope is that this does not replace the toolbelt fully… else it would make quite a lot of skills\kits pretty much useless. Med kit without self heal, e-gun without stun break, turrets without blast finishers, elixirs without tossing, mortar without orbital strike….etc..etc..
scrapper huh… well i cant say i like that one at all
Hmm, why is his face so flat?
Cause a-net made the helmet without the stereotype race/class combination in mind like usual
I think I’m pretty excited for having a hammer, what if people who had the game before it went free or the people who prepurchased HoT can have an exclusive skin for their main weapons?
While elementalist, warrior, ranger etc. has weapons which kind of looks fitting, having a special staff staff skin for thieves, a wrench like hammer (depends on what the skills would be), and maybe something so longbows look more dragonly for guardians.(Btw, pretty new to the gw forums and I might be used to the steam forum “rules” more, excuses for that.)
There actually are special skins for the elite spec weapons, you can unlock them at the elite spec tracker. Look at the hammer the forge is wielding on the pic. This is the skin forge will get. Same for the other elite specs, they get the weapon skin on their reveal picture.
But these are not exclusive for veterans, everyone playing hot can unlock them at the elite spec tracker.
Ah,that makes sense, thanks!
About the steam hammers, (and the post above), would a weapon which focuses on burst (steam power) be fitting for an engineer? The mechanic sounds more like something a thief would use, but still.
The other thing is that in the hammers there’s a movement based energy regenerator, being stronger the more skills you use on it in a single fight.
While I do heavily lack in experience from what I’ve seen from other people trying to drag a fight out so long isn’t smart, especially since with a weapon which starts weak every time you’re very vulnerable for ambushes.
Well my personal theory is that the forge hammer is gonna be a dps weapon, probably with some condi mixed in to make it viable in many builds, if i look at the trailer with the engi swinging the hammer i see burn and maybe confuse or stun. 3 target auto attack chain that hits pretty hard mixed with some condi damage, blast finisher related #2 thats more utility rather then damage(cause that how an engi do anyways), a gap closer on #3 that might bring some soft cc…lets say immob, a combo field related attack on #4 and some form of powerfull aoe attack….most likely #5. I mean its a hammer afterall.
As for the new mechanic… i really got no idea. I mean yea.. its most likely drones but how the drones do their droning about is beyond me. One thing is for sure.. it cant really change the basic way the toolbelt works, too many rather important skills are tied to it so i guess it wont replace it. Maybe a “permanent kit” on f6 that switches the toolbelt for a “drone remote” and replaces the toolbelt for a moment to deploy\controll em to…dunno work like banners and give out an aoe buff maybe and blast finishers if you detonate em like turrets before they go on a cooldown?
Skills… well, they found some icons some time ago, there´s an icon with a healing cross on a blue shield like bubble and another similar one on a red one aswell a “neutral” looking energy shield like icon.. so maybe the forge´s utility skills are more defensive then offensive while the hammer skills are more dps and the mechanic more utility and boon related? I mean im surely no game programmer\class designer but thats what i would do with the forge atleast.
Thats atleast what i think the forge will bring. This way you easily can make a supporter\boondude, a tank-ish setup or a damage dealer… or a jack of all trades like thing….specially if combined with vanilla skills
Here the icons, maybe they “speak” to you in a different way
so shiny..so chrome…
This. I wanted the druid until I read your comment. You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome. What a lovely day!
-best way to get a precursor comes with HoT with a mastery line, you get your precursor guaranteed that way cause you can craft it yourself.
-You can buy certain non char bound karma gear at vendors and mystic forge it to turn it to salvageable and sellable items, there are alot of usefull guides on youtube for that. I myself dont do it so i really cant tell you what vendors and stuff off the bat
- as for shards.. ehhh no clue, but im sure somebody will post something usefull
yes…YES…YEEEES! FINALLY! Waited since the HoT trailer for this moment!
Ha! That pic is great.
prepared that one aswell in case the reveal is pleasing
#3. Ways to farm specific materials rather than farming gold for everything.
Sounds like the upcoming map rewards will be like this.
Unless some drastic changes happen between now and release to that system that isn’t really the case. That system looks more like another attempt to get people to spread people around the world. You can’t really farm things through it. It’s just a little bonus for doing stuff on the map. In the few times I checked over the last beta weekend Malchor’s Leap was offering some junk item or at least something that looked like a junk item, maybe it was salvageable for something.
well.. you still get mats that are really hard to get that way.. like giant eyes
^ last point is coming in HoT with map specific rewards, icon besides the zone name tells you watcha get every couple of events there
well i have my 3:
More char customisation options that also include different idle animations, running, walking and weapon stances aswell different colour\style\skin options for class skills.
More overall armor SKINS (shame i gotta say that) that branch out into class specific designs…sorta like the elite spec armor skins do… just needs a kittenload more like that and FULL sets that look good on ALL races and genders and not only a handfull of skins. Also a break from generic “eh i guess it looks good” armors like the carprax ones, get some emotion and class feel into the skins and dont keep em so “eh i guess it could fit a -insert class here-” sort of deal like a-net does a lot (not always but a lot), people can mix em anyways if they dont like the look. Also make some cultural\“class feel” armors that go the route of dungeon armors (can be worn by every race but represent a race´s design pattern and a class at the same time)
New specialisations released within a reasonable time frame one after another…not 3 years of nothing and then just 1 spec per class and then another 3 years of nothing. Keep em coming.
As for the rest.. eh.. cept some balancing BS here and there a-net does it right imo
the gem store
Lol Basalt. I think Mawdrey could look really cool if they made it grow up more. I’m thinking maybe flowers, vines, who knows?
ohh thats watcha mean. Yea.. maybe towards the vinewrath blossom in design, i could see that work.
step: 1 make mawdrey for the skin
step: 2 make the legendary backpiece
step: 3 use a transmutation charge
step 4: profit
well id like some new armor skins… eh.. made myself sad
well since the extremely wide spread out layout of LA annoys me i usually go to a racial city. I got a forge conduit…so the only times i actually still go to LA is if i go fractals.
I imagine they started emergency rework after slowly realizing the 6-23 patch was so greatly under preforming for engi. Seems like we will be lucky to get a preview at all.
or they show us new epic and nice things and then nerf them 28% 24 hours after release…
and no.. i wont let the mortar nerf go… it still makes me angry
(edited by Basaltface.2786)
my personal greatest fears already happened… only one left.. that the forge is bad then we got all things of my list
^ well they sorta needed to do that.. given that the mortar itself looks like cheap a lvl 5 rifle
so thats that then… well no green spinal blades for me then… Oh well..would be too nice to have a full set of em
