Mythbusters: Precursors

Becka Williams.4978

Hey GD, what are some of the common myths associated with precursor mystic forge crafting? Doing some individual research on precursor rates, and I hope to debunk some of the popular myths other there about precursor crafting! (You can find my progress in the crafting section of forums)

I’ll start off:

1. Level 80’s have a better chance of crafting a precursor from the mystic forge.

DEBUNKED: I’ve done over 1200 forges with exotics on my level 28 TP mule, and got about 16 precursors. This rate is about the same, if not higher, than some of the research done with level 80’s. Safe to say character level has no effect on precursor rates!

I love statements that purport to be fact, but offer no supporting evidence. That’s the best kind of data!

The content added in the fractured living story update STILL exists. You guys are merely complaining that you can’t get achievement points. Why does the content not count unless you’re getting achievement points?

Because that was not our goal or what we spent our time for. I consider achievements content too.

To illustrate it, do you remember the Giant Slayer achievement? Without that achievement, no one would even consider that Giants as a category of monsters. Without them, guides wouldn’t have been made, and people wouldn’t have made stragedies to get the ‘mission’ of killing 1.000 Giants done. No one would ever have killed even half that amount. In other words it would just have been a random mob. Now it’s more of a mission you can take on.

The only reason why people have strategies is because there’s a grand total of 3 giants that count towards the achievement. If there were more of them, they’d be a mob people might actually kill. Do you only kill mobs that have an achievement behind them? Do you stop killing mobs once you’ve gotten the achievement for them?

Where’d you get the bolts of damask? Thin air? I’ve been crafting mine every day since ascended armor came out, and I don’t even have one full set. So don’t tell me you aren’t buying bolts from the TP.

More than one account = more than one bolt per day. But that’s irrelevant… this thread, and your initial comment, was directed at the fact that the crafting materials (silk specifically) isn’t readily available in WvW, and that we were being forced to buy them from the TP in order to make ascended armor. I dispute this notion because everything I used to get my first 2 weapons and almost my entire first suit of armor came exclusively from WvW, and I had it all before they launched ascended armor because I knew it was coming. If anyone else wanted ascended armor that badly they could have done the same thing… I have so much silk and mithril I had to start a bank guild to hold onto it. It is very abundant in WvW if you just salvage your loot.

So, you have enough money to get a second account, get that account up to level 500 in an ascended armor craft, and then claim you’re not rich? Please. And you’d have to have more than 2 account to have 2 full sets. So you have at least 3 accounts. Tell me you’re not rich. PLEASE.

Till ascended weapons came out, Legendaries weren’t any better than a karma weapon you could easily obtain. Or an 80 silver exotic on the Trading post. Your point is invalid. Please try again.

Also, no you can’t buy ascended. You can, however, buy all the mats you need to make a full set on day one. That’s paying to win. You now have an advantage over players that cannot afford the gold, for whatever reason.

how do you buy the account bound mats?

Yeah, okay, you can’t buy the dragonite, empyreal, or bloodstone, but those aren’t time gated. You can get as many of those as you want (and many of us do) In fact, I have all I need to make two sets of armor, just from playing the game normally. You can certainly buy all the time gated material on the trading post, or at least, the final form of it (damask bolts, dreldrimor steel, and elonian leather squares)

err.. you can buy ascended weapon/armor ? i don’t think you could.

if you want to give example, pls be factual.

ok lets change the ascended to Legendaries.

player A buys gem, convert to gold, and purchase the Legendary.
player B work his sweat day and night farming everything and make his Legendary.

how does that make player A win against player B. win in terms of what ? both have their Legendary in the end.

Until you realize that you still need to do the time gated stuff to level up your crafting skills high enough to actually make the ascended equipment in the first place. Whether or not you can purchase the time gated mats off of the trading post you still have to get a crafting skill to a high enough level to actually make the ascended gear. And since the Ascended Gear is bound to you, you can’t simply have someone else craft it for you.

I’m pretty sure I can get to 500 crafting in a few hours if I have money. And if I dont’ it’ll take alot more than a few hours.

You still need to do “something” yourself, but with money it is much easier right?

Note: With MONEY. Gold. Easily accessible in-game.

Then WHY is it time gated? Please explain that.

Becka Williams.4978

If you can use real world money to get a competitive advantage (and yes, getting ascended gear is a competitive advantage, otherwise, why does it exist), then it’s pay to win. It’s not as bad as other pay to win games, but that doesn’t mean it’s not. It’s not a binary state, you can have super grindy pay to win games, and games like GW2, where you get a minor competitive advantage. When exotics were the best in class, this wasn’t a big deal, because exotics were cheap. But ascended gear is time-gated. But you can bypass the time gated part with gold. So, people who can afford to grind, or want to spend real world money to avoid grind can skip over the time gated part, and get a complete set of ascended gear on day one. And so, we ask: why is ascended gear time gated? The answer is: to drive people to buy gems to convert to gold so they can skip the time gated part. And thus, GW2 is pay to win. This is also why ascended gear is ugly as sin, so that people buy transmutation crystals.

Pay to win means you pay to have access to things that cannot be acquired by any means except real world money. I’ll accept “pay to skip the legendary grind” but you can’t buy ascended armor off the trading post. You can’t skip the time-gated parts of ascended armor because there are a number of ingredients that are account bound and cannot be purchased.

Also, to whomever said that there’s obviously an issue since p2w keeps coming up: No. There’s an issue with people understanding what it means to pay to win.

You absolutely can skip the time gated part of ascended gear. You can buy the final form of the mat that requires the time gated mat off the trading post. Bolt of Damask, which needs the time gated silk string is absolutely available on the trading post. Your point is moot.

I don’t consider it griefing.

The people who get annoyed by this are the people who complain about every thing.

You won’t see any action against some thing for “noise pollution”. Especially when there is a volume slider if it isn’t some thing you like.

The people who are doing what is described in the OP are doing so to grief, therefore it is griefing regardless of what you think or whether or not it successfully griefs you specifically. Your opinion does not in any way affect their intent, and ill-intent is what people are punished for. There is no way anybody spamming a single note on auto-cast for hours on end in the middle of a crowd is doing so with good intentions, which makes me wonder if you even read the OP in the first place.

I found this magically thing that mutes every one doing that.

Walk away.

Right, leaving and letting griefers be fixes things.

No, no. You don’t understand. Their fun is way more important that your fun. Their ability to interrupt your game, and make you walk away is inviolate. Your ability to play your game, and do what you want is unimportant.

Because sometimes content lasts four weeks. And since this is the end of the year, and there won’t be another patch for another month, it’s not unreasonable to think that they might leave in content to stretch it out and build up some goodwill. Because, due to Boss “Week” there was no guarantee that Fractal “Fortnight” meant anything other than “alliteration!”

You guys act like there was only one living story update that matters, boss week (which lasted 2 weeks anyways) and you ignore all the others, ie, every mid month update, which lasted 2 weeks. You ignore the “fortnight” thing, and dismiss it as if it’s completely meaningless. You talk about no content for a month, when we just got 1 living story update, AND Wintersday. and pretend that there’s enough content in fractured to last another 2 weeks. Oh, and by the way: all the content that was in fractured? Still in fractals. You can keep doing it.

as the ‘Fractured’ subforum will show, we desperately tried to ask them as to when it was ending, only to have them give us the ol’ cold shoulder the whole time.

It said “fortnight.” Patches are every 2 weeks. Fortnight means two weeks. What more do you want to know? (I will ignore people who reply that boss week was 2 weeks.)

Yes, yes. One time something last longer then is stated. So, naturally, that means that something that’s stated as last 2 weeks might last 3. Or 4. Or 8. Or the rest of time! You just can’t know! I mean, it’s not like Boss Week lasted two weeks, the standard length of time for a mid month addition to the living story, like, oh, say, fractal fortnight. You guys act like this is the first living story update, and there’s literally no way you could’ve possibly have guessed it’d only last 2 weeks, especially since you were never told, despite them saying it’d last two weeks in the title of the update.
