Also the game will automatically down level you in lower level maps but you will still earn “similar” XP to your actual level as well as random loot drops will be your actual level. So just because you’re 80 doesn’t mean the core Tyria maps are worthless to play in.

But if you are going to stick with the level 80, start the HoT story so you can activate a core Tyria mastery track so that XP goes somewhere. Masteries need both points and XP earned from either the base game for Core Tyria Masteries or the expansion and LWS3 for HoT Masteries.

Returning player seeking elite spec feedback

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Since the elite is tied to your profession, unless you have played all professions and unlock each elite variation, and play them regularly enough to see how the various balance patches affected each of them, it’s tough to have a comprehensive answer.

What I’m saying is I’m expecting most answers will be highly subjective, possibly negative now due to the most recent balance patch (which came out Tuesday) so there may be a bit of “well X use to be great” and “profession Y which I don’t play is still OP” comments.

Third party DPS meters and game hostility...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

I have agree with the point that DPS meters aren’t the root cause, just the most recent way and possibly an objective way for those creating the hostility, to discriminate anybody who isn’t “leet” players, again in the mind of the openly hostile.

Use to be professions builds, AP, badges, game mode specific currency, whatever someone thinks is an indicator of a hardcore player from filthy casuals for particular game modes.

One of my first experiences with fractals, which I hadn’t bothered with for 4 years, was I started a LFG stating newbie looking to do some low level fractals was a player who proceeded to lecture me about gear and the fact I wasn’t the elite spec version of my professional and started guessing how my gear was likely specced wrong. Dude, I want to do a few low level fractals, not make a play style choice.

You just have to ignore these guys and find those who accept you for what you are playing. As long as you try to pull your own weight rather than sit in a corner and let everybody actually carry you rather than complaining that your DPS isn’t “acceptable” those kind of players should accept you. But constructive criticism is welcomed rather than the blind devotion to the qT or metabattle current spec as the one true way.

Why is Tiami so small?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

From the wiki

Taimi requires the assistance of a golem named Scruffy to get around, owing to a degenerative disease that prevents her from walking long distances and may spread to other parts of her body as she gets older. Although there is no known cure, this progeny is quick to refuse any offer of pity.

Personally I think her brain is soaking up nutrients first, leaving less for her body. Think she inherited that from her dad’s side of the family.

I have a ranger I started back during Trait 2.0 but stalled out as unlocking the traits I wanted was a PITA during that time for a gold poor account. The others are currently empty.

Racial Utility Skills - Useful or useless?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

I don’t understand why everyone is so against racial skills being in a meta build. Why is that a problem?

The problem is creating a meta where say dungeons should only be done with Norns or certain Fractals with Asuras for maximum efficiency. It’s bad enough player characters are discriminated against due to profession, just imagine by race as well (Charr and Sylvari need not apply).

Racial Utility Skills - Useful or useless?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

These skills were supposed to provide a unique flavor and diversity to builds, but were put down to the ground with absurd cooldowns so that every race was equal (no race equality puns intended, but yeah…).

Ironically, on a side note, Sylvari necros now have the best possible necro elite, which is Take Root, that has less cooldown and same bleeding duration as the Jagged horrors :P

Well they didn’t want race to become a meta for a particular game play mode due to skill synergy. Plus I see them as a vestigial skill from the early days of the game. I used them in those days to provide a touch more fire power (the summon support skills like the ice wurm or sylvan hound). They are fine for leveling but they certainly aren’t for “end game”, whatever you consider that to be.

Marketing Ideas for ANET next>> GW2 Expansion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

1. Add 1 Core Specialization to the actual build (3 Core Specializations + 1 Elite Specialization (HoT or Crystal Desert)). Or, review all the existing traits and theirs combinations.
2. Add at least 1 new race to the game with the expansion.
None is a SHOT in the HEAD
3. The mounts, which will be great for marketing and the game, must be added to the old areas too (HoT and Central Tyria) PLEASE. Remove some WP if needed.
4. Do something to the WvW. Remove the POIs, Hero Points and all the old stuff.
Add Ascended Gears Reward Tracks, WvW Seasons,… maybe you can do as in PvP. All on level 80 and with the same weapons and armors.
5. Everyone must have 9 character slots by default. More than this… GEM STORE

1) That would radically increase the work involved in trying to balance. That’s why the elite replaces a core specializations because there are 10 combinations for 3 out of 5 core specializations and 10 combinations for 2 out of 5 core specializations with one elite out of N elite. This way elites aren’t, on paper, automatically better in terms of possible builds.

2) Highly doubtful considering it would require 1 to 80 content, new starting zone, additional voice over, adapting armor to whatever body type, etc. Tons of work for limited payoff (additional sales vs cost) since the expansion is level 80 content.

3) see the Mounts thread. However if story wise they provide an alternative to waypoints on the expansion maps that require a “mount” to do instant travel long distances then maybe. Other than that we still hoof it on foot everywhere. Remember in Tyria, everyday is leg day.

4) If you followed the AMAs for each chapter, you would have heard about some of these being worked on. But decoupling WvW upgrades from story and expansions is probably the safe way to do things considering how poorly the WvW changes in HoT were received.

5) We got 5 slots, one for each race, not profession from the start. Why would they give away $40 worth of gem shop upgrades for free with an expansion that isn’t going to cost too much more than that?

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Totally up to you. It’s been over 4 year for me and I haven’t finished the personal story once, did LWS2 story but not HoT and I’ve done only LWS3E1. Some people may consider that blasphemy but I’ve never been a “story” player but an explorer. It’s just LWS3 only unlocks new areas to explore by requiring you to play each episode long enough to get to the new map.

There’s plenty of XP in the game. Story only gives you flavor IMO to your XP.

I frankly hate the black lion chests. all the items in those chests should be available in the gem store for gems. Not through the stupid gambling chests… >.>

Well ANet did do an A/B test once with the item available from chest and the gem shop at the same time. And I bet dollars to doughnuts that what they learned was they sold more gems when the item was available only in the chest. Remember the Gem Shop is substituting for the income MMOs once made from subscriptions. Considering the way the gem exchange rate spikes when keys go on sale, RNG chests are still quite popular.

I would also love to see a general breakdown in odds for drawing from the uncommon, rare and ultra-rare pools. But specific within each pool, no, unless that too is general such as getting a weapon skin vs a contract in the ultra-rare pool or weapon skin vs mining node in the rare pool.

I’ve open 101 of the chests after they switched to this new seasonal item.

I’ve gotten the 4th slot only 10 times. Once was a skin from the rare pool, the rest were uncommon including 4 BL Tickets, 2 seasonal dye kits and 3 seasonal items.

As long as you buy keys for the surprise factor instead of targeting a specific item from them then it’s fine. I like blind box and capsule toys and I see BLC no differently.

I would say under an hour. Depends how many times you fail during certain fights.

Also depends on whether you want to do achievements and figure them out for yourself, or if you’re using a guide. Because if you’re doing achievements and figuring it out on your own, there’s no way it’s an hour. Trust me on that.

Well I was just thinking of the story. Once the story is over it’s no different than any other map with specific achievements that you can do at your leisure.

Well that’s the cold calculation isn’t it? By making it exclusive (at least for now) from the BLC, they figure they will make more money selling keys than selling a single item.

Also players need to get a sensible attitude about BLC. You are only guaranteed the seasonal item and one item from each line of common items (when you preview). Everything listed in the uncommon, rare and super rare pools is a “crap shoot”. By rotating most of these on every update to the chest, it keeps the interest high.

Players should never be fixated at getting a single item from the uncommon and up pools. That’s just asking for disappointment.

You want a pity timer on items that are uncommon that can only appear in a 4th slot, a slot that shares those uncommon item chances with both the rare and super-rare pool, a 4th slot that appears to only have a 10-15% chance of appearing?

Pretty sure you wouldn’t like the number of attempts I’m thinking is reasonable since at 2 or 3% chance. At the very best, it would be 50 and 33 respectively with the odds I stated. I personally would double or even triple that because those numbers 86% of the players would have gotten it “naturally” with the number doubled and 95% with the number tripled.

Gems - What do you recommend?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

From my point of view I would go with convenience items. First is the copper-fed salvage kit (800 gems). Generic unbreakable tools (2400 gems) . Bank tab (600) or Collection Expansion (800).

The first two items mean you will never need to buy or run out of either basic salvage kits or gathering tools while out in the field. The last either doubles the number of bank slots or doubles what collections can hold.

But I can understand that some people will vehemently disagree with these choices.

New guy here

in Players Helping Players

Behellagh.1468

1) Don’t use the 80 boost yet, if you do then you will have a whole lot more things you don’t understand right away.

2) This isn’t like other MMOs. You won’t be directed from quest giver to quest giver and you won’t be pushed out of one map to the next one. It’s sandbox lite once you are done with the tutorial. You can find scouts that will tell you about nearby activities which you can choose to do or not. Feel free to explore the maps.

Just about everything you do will generate XP. PvE is designed around the philosophy that you shouldn’t be afraid of seeing another player. Everyone has a copy of a gathering node so no rush to claim it first, everyone gets equal, not shared, XP and loot from defeating a critter.

I mentioned you won’t get pushed out of a map, that’s because the game will auto down level you to match the level of critters in your vicinity. Note it won’t up level you. You will be rewarded XP and loot similar to what you will get if you faced a critter of your actual level so it’s entirely possible to level to 80 in the starter maps.

There are no factions across races so you can visit all the home cities and maps without fear from the map’s race. Each race does have a faction of their own race as the default troublemakers besides disagreeable critters.

In this game it’s the combination of weapons wielded and profession that determines your current combat skills. The same weapon has different skills on different professions as well, if the profession allows, in different hands. Most professions allow you to switch between weapons in the middle of combat once you’re level 10. Also few skills will root you in place, movement and dodging is key to stay alive. Everyone can heal themselves a bit and rez others including NPCs (for XP).

The Wiki is your friend. The game is sadly light in explaining some of the more advance systems like specializations and traits and the wiki is a good place to read up on them. Don’t worry too much about making a mistake leveling up. As you do you will start getting Hero Points to unlock traits and skills. By the time you hit Level 80 you will have enough to unlock everything. If you want to unlock them faster, there are Hero Point Challenges on maps that by completing will reward you with additional Hero Points.

That’s it for now.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Iirc, I wasn’t able to use TP when I didn’t have HoT. So if that’s the case, I think the only thing you can really do with the gear that you get that you’re not using is salvage it or sell at merchant.

Making a sales pitch for Anet: HoT is well worth it, best 50$ I’ve ever spent in any mmo… and I think now it’s cheaper, people were saying like 30$ now if I’m not mistaking.

Legendary armor obtainable without raids?

people keep glossing over and forgetting that there is another subset of players, who with responsibilities like children and the like, would love to able to raid and get the rewards but due to said circumstances cannot do the raids. these are the folks that would like to get the armor and do the content but cannot. sorting out your “personal issues” takes 18 years in that regard. but that said even another method of acquisition through 30 or so additional collection acheivements will take a heck of a long time but with planning could still be done by them, but currently the system is kinda exclusionary, all other legendary items, yes take long but are still attainable, even the pvp back piece can be done like that. but the armor is a no go. it’s the one reward that one and only one group of players can get and that sucks.

so if by chance the devs are do somehow read this post please, reconsider the stance on raids only, some of us would love to do the content but due to other commitments can’t so please allow us a chance, even if it costs more and takes a heck of a lot longer the chance to get legendary armor because a lot of us love the skins, not all but a lot.

It breaks down to which game reward philosophy you believe in. Should all rewards be available to everyone doing anything OR should specific high end rewards be tied to specific high end content? Something to show that you completed X rather than just buy it off the TP.

It was a mistake IMO that Legendary Weapons, original set, are available on the TP. Precursors sure but the end product? No, show your seriousness in playing this game by gathering all the mats and requirements to craft it.
