He means fun as in game formats that are fun to people.

Conquest does not encourage fun for many people because rather than combat it emphasizes certain build elements, like builds who can bunker and outlast, and the extreme builds that can debunker. Most importantly, you can win most team matches and still lose the game because conquest is about rotating players and neutralizing/capping nodes.

Other formats like capture the flag or death match emphasize other aspects of combat that tend to be fun for most people. Death match in particular.

Conquest also creates a lot of 1v1 scenarios, and this game is horribly balanced on 1v1. There’s no way a necro or ranger will kill a warrior. There’s no way a mesmer will 1v1 a competent thief. There’s no way an elementalist can win against a warrior or s/d thief or necro.

In death match classes which are not good in 1v1 don’t get penalized.

^^^ This!!! Absolutely this! GW1 felt like Build Wars towards the end, and this is beginning to feel like Build Wars v2.0

If you want amazing, buy a new computer. If you don’t, turn your settings down. You don’t get to drive a Tesla after buying a Honda. New games = require newer computers. No way would I ever expect my 466Mhz iBook (purchased sep 2000) to be able to play GW2, much less at highest settings.

You don’t need new, I have an Intel i5 processor and a GTX660 card with only 8gb ram and GW2 runs fine for me with all max settings. I’m not getting a gaudy 120+ fps but after 60 it’s all just bragging rights.

I feel so sorry for the devs. It’s bluntly obvious that you don’t get thank-you’s very often, so, thank you devs at ANet Most people focus on what they don’t like about something and then throw a fit about how it should have been done better, and think that the problem is as bad as ruining something in the game, but nobody ever realizes that they are getting something awesome, and they should enjoy it while it’s here.
Which brings me to this temporary content. People misunderstand what you are trying to do here, too, and ignore the fact that this is all here for now to build a foundation for much more enjoyable things in the future. This foundation will allow for higher-quality permanent content in the future. We just have to be patient (which by the way seems to be a rare virtue around here). I’ve seen it portrayed as “candy” to keep us happy until we eat it up, but that’s a terribly false idea.
Now I’m not going to reply to whoever responds to this post, because I don’t want to argue, I’m just hoping that I am helping to keep things civil and help people realize some things about the decisions you’ve made (ANet devs) and why you’ve made them. Besides, I’ve said all I can say and all that I feel needs to be said.

So you blanketly call negative feedback our ignorance to amazing content, accuse us all of pitching a fit and then announce you will not be responding to replies… didn’t see that one coming.

Al least we should have a “take off cutscene” before the loading screen and one “landing cutscene” after it Something similar to the “elevator” in the Grove

You mean the ones where you see your character standing at your destination as the seed pod that is supposedly carrying you there slowly floats down next to you? :P

Lol, they still need to fix that… xD;;

I do like the idea of a cutscene like that, but I kinda doubt it will be there though

It’s a huge mistake when they add hot air ballooning and the pod travelling in The Grove looks better!

I can empathize with having a busy life and not always being able to fit my gaming schedule in between work, home life, and social commitments. Your comments are not lost on us.

We’re exploring some ideas for the future, including a system that would allow certain bits of Living World content to be accessed independent of the release. Plans and designs have not been solidified yet, so I want to temper your expectations. But if you have any opinions on the matter feel free to let us know. We’re already looking at ways to leave some LW content behind to evolve Tyria and improve the game. This would be one element of it, should we decide to build such a feature.

What about adding a mechanic like the Guild Wars bonus mission pack? Some type of historians that allow you to ‘re-live’ epic moments in Guild Wars 2 “history”.

I don’t care.
I don’t care about the Bazaar. I don’t care about the Dragon Bash and I certainly don’t care about the Jubilee.

Why? Because I’m going to spend 2 weeks frantically grinding, grab my shinies and leave like nothing ever happened.

This is getting worse and worse ANet. I’m not staying for your bloody kittening time gated RNG gated shinies that don’t give me any pleasure in doing or getting them. I’m staying because of the stuff you released at the beginning of the game, you know, that whole MMO game thing with five (not 3!) races heavily involved and there were dragons? That thing is alright, shame no one plays anymore.

I think it could’ve been worded better but i understand you’re frustration. I played through what I felt was a great personal story, enjoyed fun and interesting story-mode dungeons (improvement could be made, but fun), and explored a beautiful world with a lot of things to do.

Now, every two weeks, I’m hit with a frenzy of achievements that must be done in a short timeframe and are highly difficult. Sometimes I feel like it wouldn’t matter if there were ANY story attached to these updates because I just don’t have the time to explore it.

I am however going to reserve final judgement until I see these events repeat next year. Colin has said this has been a year of laying framework to build upon, so maybe the payoff will be worth the frustration I feel now. Maybe it’s not worth it for you, but that’s a call each of us must make for ourselves.

ArenaNet is too darn good with lore and story for me to lose hope yet. We’re still in the first year of a new game. More content from Ree and Jeff please!!!

The good news is that they decided to split the Living Story and Recurring Content achievements into their own categories.

This will allow me to prioritize the 1 time ones (the Jubilee) and then work on the repeating ones (the Gauntlet).

Good good, they need to retro the other ones though. I manage do everything minus captain in 15 mins which I could if people didn’t hate lowbies so much. Spent more time finding a group then fighting captain. I am sure there is people who want to beat T4 trials which I have and want the achievement. I played with people duoing it who really are putting effort into it but no luck in beating it.

I find it insulting to these players who aren’t whining its too hard but that they got a limited amount of time to do such things.

I’m one of those people. I’m an average player (working on getting better), but I can’t devote hours a day to the game. I’ve done jumping puzzles that required dozens of attempts and hundreds of muffled curse words, but I beat that puzzle and was elated.

I have nothing against earning rewards, but please don’t penalize me because I have limited time to devote to a game.

ArenaNet, you’re really dropping the ball(oon) here. Even the pod in The Grove has a cutscene that shows you travelling. If I just want a loading screen, I’ll waypoint. We step into the basket of a hot air balloon because we want to fly over the landscape of Tyria.

Even as a short cutscene, hot air ballooning would’ve been fun for me. Now, it’ll be to get the achievement and then soon forgotten.

This community is so annoyingly unreasonable. Maybe the changes should have taken less than a year to come out…but they didn’t and thats a mistake they’re correcting right now.

Your rant probably wouldn’t change anything because either you have useless ideas or they’re already ideas expressed by everyone that anet is likely already working on.

He said they’re building their temporary content portfolio in order to focus on bigger and better things for the future…how can you argue against that? you just guna whine about everything they haven’t done yet with absolutely no regard for what they plan on doing in the future?

Providing feedback isn’t ‘annoyingly unreasonable’. This is a large and diverse community. Everyone has a right and I’d say a duty to provide positive and negative feedback to ArenaNet. I do believe ArenaNet even wants this feedback!

The feedback just needs to be a bit more specific and constructive in some instances. Instead of a blanket “this is garbage” statement, what specifically don’t you like, why don’t you like it, and what would you have done different.

I think there were many people who provided excellent negative feedback in this thread. You don’t have to agree with them, and you definitely can post why you don’t agree, but that doesn’t make their comments unreasonable.

I voted for Evon. I’ve posted in several forum threads smear campaigns against Ellen. I’ve accused her of being in league with Abaddon and of being the real reason rng chests are in the game. I loved role-playing this out as if it were a real campaign. I’m also sad and a bit upset that Kormir II won the election, but this is a game. Some people are definitely going too far, especially in a game that has children playing (I know the age restriction in the eula, but we all know kids play these games).

Having said all that, the worse thing you can do is be a participant in spreading the exposure to these people. If it breaks a rule, report them and move on. Many others will do the same, and we’ll see less of it in chat. Don’t give a troll a larger audience, please.

IMO: ArenaNet favors Evon (Unfair!)

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: BilboBaggins.5620

BilboBaggins.5620

I’m quite appalled really at how much blatant favor you (ArenaNet) is giving to Evon Gnashblade. You’re just giving players more and more reasons to vote for Evon rather than Kiel, which makes the voting process overly biased and unfair to those who’d rather vote for Kiel.

When you announced the fractals, I thought it was fine. Either way, the story and lore shown would be interesting to see even though we practically know all about the Fall of Abaddon. Sadly, many people don’t see beyond the tip of the iceberg in the game’s lore and think that there’s nothing behind the Thaumanova, even after looking dutifully because of how wide-spread-yet-hidden Thaumanova lore is. In turn this creates a favor to the fall of Abaddon in both expected “epicness” and lore gleaned. I mean, how often do you get to witness a god in Guild Wars 2? Thus far: never.

But now with these update notes, it’s just outright unfair.

  • Black Lion Chest Keys are now a rare drop from the Black Lion Chest. Most key drops have been replaced by Black Lion Ticket Scraps. This guarantees progress toward a reward rather than a simple retry.
  • Tickets and ticket scraps will continue to drop from the Black Lion Chest and can be used for select future weapon sets.

You practically guarantee that Evon wins with this. Not only do you have folks who would rather have a “tie to GW1” over “another asura blown up experiment” (a gross understatement of Thaumanova’s lore), but now you’re basically telling this to the playerbase:

“Vote for Evon, get lower BLC keys, so you can open more chests and get more weapon skins! And hey, we’ll toss in a fight with a god.”

And what does Kiel have? Reduced waypoint cost and the overly underestimated Thaumanova blow up.

Not to mention that folks are treating Kiel like another Kormir or Trahearne thanks to your (ArenaNet’s) over-glorifications of her achievements, while the cons to Evon are neatly being glossed over by everyone, ArenaNet and player alike.

I’m sorry ArenaNet, but your bias is showing. So much for the whole “they need the players’ help” bit. Something tells me this will be a landslide victory just because you’re favoring Evon far too much. Intentional or not.

I really hope you’re right!

New thing in Great Collapse

BilboBaggins.5620

So, I’m not going to spoil anything but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that according to game lore, there was never a Canthan district. If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that the great collapse was formally an arts district.

According to Ree it was a Canthan district…

Unless she was stating the design history and the lore history in the same sentence. I forgot where the interview was (I think it was a TowerTalk interview about humanity’s lore), but Ree explicitly stated that the collapse happened because of a rush in establishing the foundations, and in the same answer explained it was the Canthan district.

I actually have done my research – the Great Collapse’s story and Thaumanova’s story are two of my favorite aspects of GW2 lore. And there is evidence to say it was an Arts AND a Canthan district.

Aside from Ree’s statement, in the Order of Whispers personal story step Suspicious Activity you are able to ask Valenze and the others about the person you’re going to investigate, and she says:

“He was born and raised in the Canthan areas of Divinity’s Reach. He worked in the gladitorial arena until he was injured. "

So tell me – where was/is this “Canthan areas of Divinity’s Reach?” The gladiatorial area could only be the training grounds looking spots next to the Plaza of Balthazar (no other place fits a “gladiatorial area” description), which is right on the edge of The Great Collapse!

And considering how A LOT of the lore and general information in this game comes from outside the game (specially considering who said it, as most of the confirmed facts we got from multiple lore related stuff comes from interviews with Jeff and Ree), then it IS where the Canthan District was. Not to mention the points already mentioned by Konig of ingame info about the Canthan District (and if that’s not where it was… I don’t know where it’s placed then as there is not enough room for a secret district).

Honestly I would prefer 1000 times to wait more so you guys can deal with whatever keeps you from making it canthan instead of scrapping it and doing a recon to use that area for a different living story.

That hole can be there as long as you want, we won’t complain, but if you want to replace it and eliminate all connections to a Canthan District, then no matter how good the story and the ideas are, you will outrage the community.

I’m sure there is some way to implement what you were thinking other ways without eliminating connections between the Great Collapse and the Canthan District.

Edit: As Konig said, it can perfectly be both the arts and the canthan district. There is no reason at all to negate one or the other.

I’m not outraged. So do I have to get kicked from the community now?

Nick, that picture was a screenshot taken prior to the release of the game.

And it still can be reconned into canthan district. It’s discriminatory to have districts for all the important nations (Elona and Ascalon) and not Cantha.

PS: Just out of curiosity, where can we find the info that it was an arts district?

Yes it’s illegal to discriminate against the non-existing race of Cantha. I must admit some bias, I’d be happy if we never saw that god-awful cramped architecture again.

Some people have actually helped others with the sprint achievements so it’s not all negative when it comes to attitudes, but i’ve seen a lot of the negative comments myself. Heaven forbid they favor jumping puzzles for a month, some of us do enjoy jumping puzzles and find this new release to be great. I being among the people who enjoy it.

Plenty of other content is released all the time, a couple new jumping puzzles and an Spvp map that has some cool new mechanics was a great idea and warmly welcomed by everyone I’ve talked to about it thus far.

If you don’t like the events don’t participate in them, plenty of other stuff to do in the game.

(Granted its a bit buggy thus far but I’m sure they’ll clean it up)

I don’t think the OP is against you having jumping achievements to earn the resource node, I think he/she just wants more of a variety of achievements so everyone can earn the node based on their playstyle. Where did all the PvE mission achievements go? Dungeon (or this time PvP) or jump, that’s it, take your pick.

Total disappointment over this update

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Posted by: BilboBaggins.5620

BilboBaggins.5620

The problem i have is this; these meta-achievement rewards started out with a good variety of options. Good at jumping puzzles, do those. Not good a jumping? Get your achievements in a dungeon. Dungeon too hard for you? Do these PvE missions. There was a good variety of ways to earn the meta. Now these meta’s seem to be locked behind difficult (pro) content and it’s time limited.

I have yet to check out the achievement list but I certainly hope that ArenaNet didn’t block the acquisition of a permanent resource node behind pro level content and still only give casual players two weeks to earn it. This would definitely give an advantage to people who can log in daily for many hours and seems to be contrary to ArenaNet’s original design philosophy of wanting people to play Guild Wars 2 they way they wanted.

After reading about this update(which, I am very excited about) I came to the part about the achievement points, and was a little dismayed. I suggest you (Arena Net) roll back achievement points based off dailys. (At the moment I’m currently over 9000 Ap, and as proof, look up my name. This is not a low scored player complaining) I suggest this because many achievements won’t be done if you give people such an easy alternative. To make up for the loss of points from dailys you could implement more easy achievements, such as
“Get 100% world completion on X class-15points.”
or
“Get level 80 on x class-10 points.”
Easy to Hard achievements like this could mitigate the loss of points from people loosing 2-4 thousand points. Not only would they help the loss, but they would also really show who’s a more dedicated player, and bring meaning to the achievement points leaderboard. (Other then who has done the most dailys) :P

Comments and questions are welcome. Flaming isn’t. Keep it classy tyrians.
~Heapeaus / Doom Bunny / Robot Turtle / Krolen / others

I disagree for one simple reason. Guild Wars 2 was supposedly built around the design philosophy of allowing players to choose they way they want to play, to give variety as to how you can level a character and earn rewards. Achievements are achievements, points are given based on difficulty, that’s how it’s weighted.

I have played this game since beta and I played GW1 for 7+ years. I log in several days a week and play for a minimum of 3 hours when I log in. I only have around 3500 APs. I do dailies and monthlies whenever i log in. Why is the time I spend in the game less worthy of reward than yours?

Now, if ArenaNet adds chests to the end of especially hard achievements to give bonus rewards for difficult content, I have absolutely no problem with that, but don’t punish me because i enjoy different aspects of the game than you do.

I hope you didn’t find this response trolling in any way and I certainly don’t blame you for stating your viewpoint.

Aetherblade story dungeon vs jumping puzzles

Come on guys, the OP isn’t asking for a lot, just some more variety in the ways to complete this meta. If it was for an exotic bit of armour, or something that is super valuable and game-changing I could almost agree, but this is for a mini. A memento of the event, that’s all.

I think, sure, have harder achievements that not everyone can get. Go ahead and tie gear drops into it if you like, whatever. But everyone should be able to get something. He’s not asking for it for free. He’s already got 11 achievements, that’s three more than the last meta was, and these achievements were all harder to get, where the last ones were just “go here and press F”. It’s not a free ride for anyone.

I’m all for hard stuff that not everyone can get, but this content patch was crazy for all but a small proportion of the playerbase, one way or another. And every time people get demoralised and quit, that’s fewer players to fund the cash shop running of the game.

If the Living Story is being touted as the future of the game, it’s no good saying “Well you don’t have to play it”, because you are basically saying “Well don’t play the game”. And if that’s the answer to everything, the game starts to fall apart.

People are entitled to make criticisms if they think there is a problem. Will it change anything? I don’t know. But there’s no call to go around saying that people’s opinions are invalid because they’re not up to some arbitrary standard that other people are setting.

^This, this… 100 times this. I certainly wouldn’t support making a dungeon or jumping puzzle easier if the payout were something exotic or powerful. In fact, I’m not even saying make dungeons or jps easier, just give more variety to the achievements needed to earn “fluff” rewards. Knowing the dungeon was very hard and knowing two of the jps were very hard, what would be the negative effect of requiring 11 achievements to earn the mini, or having one or two more novice achievements?

I don’t think most casual players are really looking for everything in the game to be handed to them, at least i’m not. I’d even be fine with the achievements as they were if I had more time to get one of the hard jps or beat the dungeon.

I haven’t looked at the achievements for the latest living story but I know there are 24ish and you have to complete 16, so maybe they’ve already added more variety. I certainly hope they did, especially for something as critical as a resource node.

Give me more options to earn the fluff items and more time for the good stuff, is that too much to ask?

I played it with PUG + one guild mate everytime. There was not a single time we didn’t finish it. I did it around 10 times. If you cannot master this dung I suggest you wach some video guide on youtube. It’s just 1 running around fight and 1 boss fight with some killing trash in between.
If you are from EU server I can help you with it if you want.

I appreciate the offer but I’m on a U.S. server. I’m an average player, I’m working on getting better but there is content that’s definitely geared to pro players. I have no problem with this but does a mini really have to be tied to pro content? We’re not talking ascended gear here. I just think there should be a better mix of achievements. I’ve completed every cache I’m capable of but Goemm’s Lab and the WvW jumping puzzles are pro level jumpers, so i’m one achievement short of earning a mini and my efforts are wasted.

And I also appreciate your advice. i do watch videos to help me understand the mechanics of a dungeon I’m going to run. Like I said, I’m an average player trying to get better. Thank you for a helpful response, some people are not so nice.

I absolutely agree with Fristyraziel.1854
The rewards have to be earned. Can’t everything be easy and with no effort.
Cry me more OP,but someone who put more time and effort should be rewarded more.

We’re not talking ascended armor here, this is a gold mini. It is NOT too much to ask that a better mix of achievements be made for living world content. Keep the hard content for pro players but why block a large portion of the playerbase from earning a mini to commemorate their achievements? The difficulty is ramping up with every release, soon it will cater only to the pro player. I guarantee you ArenaNet will not be able to keep releasing content every two weeks if casual players are left behind and stop spending money on GW2.

The living world content is supposed to have a mix for every type of player. I have no problem with hard content for the pro player, but I do have a problem with being one achievement short of earning the mini for Sky Pirates and knowing that all that effort is for nothing as I can’t get past Fritz let alone complete the dungeon. So do the jumping puzzles right? Well I did every cache I’m capable of, Goemm’s lab and the WvW puzzle are beyond my ability. Like the dungeon these two puzzles are for the pro player. So I fall one short of earning the mini. We’re not talking ascended armor which should be earned with hard content, this is a mini and a large group of players will not be able to get it. is it too much to ask for a better mix of achievements?

The dungeon is a joke! Hard mode has officially arrived. I don’t mind the dungeon being that difficult, but I’m one achievement away from earning the mini and I can’t even beat Frizz let alone the dungeon! It’s frustrating to get so close to earning a reward for the living story only to run into a buzzsaw of a dungeon.

I’m not saying don’t create hard content for pro players, I’m just asking please don’t abandon us casuals in the process.

I wait for people I see coming, and sometimes I’m lucky enough that some people actually wait when they see me coming. That’s about the best you can expect in an open world game. If I miss out on a few, oh well, they spawn quick enough. You can’t control how other people act, the only control here is how ArenaNet decides to set the game mechanics.

I have the same issues, not just with GW2, it happens while on youtube as well as sometimes doing nothing at all. What’s really annoying is it will override the advanced power options I’ve set in Windows and cut my framerate in half until I reset it. There are a lot of people with the same problem.

The bad news is if you aske 20 people how they fixed it, you’ll get 20 solutions and none of them may be right for you. There seems to be two general schools of thought on the culprit. Some blame the display drivers and say you just have to find the version that’s stable for you, the others tend to blame Windows and they way the OS tries to “throttle” voltage to your video card to save on “battery life” even when the OS is installed on a desktop computer.

If anyone ever finds the magic bullet solution for this I’d love to hear it. ArenaNet has a post with recommended settings for nVidia cards that’s supposed to help. For me, turning vsync on made the problem worse.

I haven’t tried it so I don’t know, has anyone tried checking the box for free camera movement. It would mean that the camera would not snap back to “follow” you and you have manual control of the camera, but would that stop the rotating death cam?
