It’s a poorly conceptualized article and I respect the persons opinion but he digs himself a hole in mentioning Ultima Online.
“The game didn’t suddenly switch gears on you and become something else or expect you to change your playstyle or daily activities. You pretty much kept doing what you were already doing.”
In fact, I don’t see how anyone could argue that Guild Wars 2 is more in line with his wants than any other game before it.
The writer’s article wasn’t written specifically about GW2, in fact I don’t think they mention it. They were speaking about the MMO genre in general since WoW. I was relating that article to this expansion because of my concern that the mastery system might be adding a system that does nothing but gate content to slow progression.
Based on what we know so far, this expansion is nowhere near as extensive as an expansion released by ArenaNet a decade ago. This is cause for some skepticism. I don’t know the final specs for this new expansion because they haven’t told any of us that info, but what they have told us is NOT a lot of content.
And although we don’t know much you make comparissons between things you don’t know…. congrats
Well now that Colin and MO have confirmed it, we DO know that what they told us at PAX is every feature that the expansion will have. So it really isn’t much of an expansion as far as content, so thanks for congratulating me on getting that right!
Moving on, it still may be worth the money depending on the price point and the details regarding the features they are releasing.
So by “every feature” you mean we know exactly how many new skills they will add, how many new traits, armor/weapon skins, new zones, dungeons, events, bosses so you can make an ACTUAL comparisson with EotN?
The answer is no, so your comparisson is still useless.
According to who, you? in that case I guess I’ll still compare.
If the mastery system plays similarly to the reputation skills of the original Guild Wars would this meet your definition of grind? Does this system feel like a “gear check”, a way to slow the community’s progress through the content? Is this what you consider to be “hard” content, being artificially slowed?
Thank you all for some incredibly insightful posts! Some of them got me to reminiscing about my days of pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons. I went from those types of games to the PC based D&D RPGs (Eye of the Beholder, Pool of Radience), and found my way to online MMOs.
I think I’d really like to see a larger variety of content on the PvE experience rather than it always being about meaner, stronger, harder content. I too miss the days of long journeys where getting there was at least as rewarding as the content I traveled to. I too have gotten hooked on the easier, casual gameplay and nostalgia is making me miss those “days gone by”.
I couldn’t ever hope to say it better myself, and as AOL closes Joystiq and Massively I think it’s appropriate to let them have the last word on this. I just wish someone at ArneaNet read this article:
I know some of you will argue that this horizontal progression is different. All I can say is I disagree, it feels like just the latest take on linear progression to me.
Whether you agree or not, it’s still a great read from a source that should not be shut down!

Now take that same mentality and apply it to your favorite tv show. Why should a network give you the final season for free? It should go direct to DVD on a per episode basis for $20 a pop! Best way to milk your loyal fans.
maybe they should begin to place commercials in the game to earn money, or a subscription like pay-tv
They don’t need that, they’re like PBS they have benefactors like me who spend a lot in the gem store.
You already got far more worth than what you paid for, what are you complaining about?
$60-70 AAA game usually has around 60-100 hours, sometimes even less. You can’t compare Dragon Age: Inquisition to Guild Wars 2 let alone any MMO, different beasts.
In terms of money spent to time played you can. Many people have at least 1000 hours, which is far more than the cost of the game.
No, you really can’t. MMOs are ever changing, ever expanding worlds. Also how many of those hours are spent by people just standing around in town socializing with their friends. Many people use MMOs as a social network, that’s not game “content” provided. They’re completely different beasts.
They already confirmed that they’ve announced all the features that are in the expansion. We will be getting more details, but not more features.

OP says Revenants are OP that means Elementalists are also OP, simply by the fact that utility skills have traditionally longer cooldowns than weapon skills so Elementalist will not only have more skills than the Revenant most likely (using the math provided by Minae Iss above) but they will also have overall higher APM because weapon skill cooldowns tend to be the shorter of the two sides of the skill bar.
PS: This topic is an amusing read, just adding to it
Strawman argument.
I believe a recent interview confirmed the new masteries are PvE only but I haven’t read anything saying specializations would be PvE only. My guess is that they would be allowed in WvW, but not in structured PvP where you can’t assume every player has bought the expansion.
my guess is that you can totally play against a specialization, but not as one until you buy the expansion.
Evolve is doing something similar with its monsters/hunters DLCs.
seriously, the mere notion that PvP would be permanently stagnated because you can’t add anything that isn’t in the core release to it is preposterous. are revenants going to be banned from sPvP as well because you can’t tell if everyone bought the expansion?
Again, my guess would be that the revenant would also be excluded from sPvP. competitive PvP in GW2 has continued to be groomed as an esport. How can you justify one team having a competitive advantage over another on the basis of a purchased expansion?
With all the information being released by Colin and MO, it appears that Revenants are going to be a bit too overpowered. Now you’re probably asking why I would make this claim before the expansion is even in Open Beta. What it comes down to is versatility.
Revenants are going to be able to use their based Weapon skills, and channel spirits that change their Heal, Utility, and Elite skills. With this idea, there’s concerns that they have more playability than any other class. If you can Weapon Swap, that allows you to have a nice variety of skills to use strategically. But if you can “Utility Bar Swap” in combat, that might give too much benefits for smart players in SPvP. Couple that with the speculation that you can select different Legend spirits to channel, and assuming each has it’s own strategic play style, and you’ve just inserted Ursan-mode v1.0 from GW1.
I hope the SPvP Devs keep this in mind when they have their brainstorming meetings. I’m going to LOVE trying out this new class, but I hope there’s some balance as I don’t get ROLFstomp’d in matches.
I don’t think you’ll have to worry. My guess is that the new specializations will be allowed in WvW but not in sPvP because not everyone is going to buy the expansion.

Doesn’t the silverwaste map have a poi that can only be reached by completing a very long jp?
it depends on how it’s added. first, it depends on whether or not you’ll have to do new stuff. if not, it depends on what you need to do to earn those points. a group event? not retroactive. a collection? well, the items you have on you will count towards it. map completion? retroactive. and so on.
I think we all agree (at least I do) that we still need all the info to make a final decision on any of these new systems. I just hope we find out fast because the little we do know concerns me greatly.
If it is so bad, do not buy it./stop playing the game.

New armors in HoT? ArenaNet, will you...

No. Clipping is impossible to fix. Developers havnt told you all this, but I will. Can’t fix this problem because then it would limit the creation of many unique models for weapons and gear.
Sad but true. Clipping is just something you have to put up with when you have complex models and six individual armor pieces that make up a set.
Considering how good the guild reward system treats small guilds. I would expect the for guild halls. After months of grinding you should be able to afford a tent with a candle and some hay. Most likely wont come with waypoint. You will need to run to it.
We’re playing different games apparently! I have a small friends and family guild and I wouldn’t call the current guild system good, equitable, or fair.
I do believe that in context, “good” here meant the opposite.
Ouch, I did what I hate when others do to me, respond without fully reading and understanding the post. Sorry Dr Evil & thanks Donari!

My guess is we’ll be forced to do the content again, after all this is a no grind game.
I always thought it was, once it gets above 30fps with no drops the difference isn’t noticeable to most people. There are people out there that have above normal eyesight and would notice the difference.
However, when the games visuals are not breaking any boundaries in gaming graphics, I expect a game to run at 60fps or better when you throw sli/crossfire at it. GW2 has some serious issues with it’s engine. It can’t even take advantage of multi-core CPUs!

Cool thank you.
Old style beta testing should be burn in hell. If you want feedback then get the feedback from the one who want to buy your game and who is playing your game.
Public Beta is always the best way to test your game.
You mean those kind of modern betas where 90% of the people have no actual interest in testing, but just play it in order to play it before everyone else, and thus the actual amounts of testing becomes very limited which makes the product suffer in the long term?
Exactly! Which is why so many bugs pass right through beta and into the final product!
It has also been pointed out that each of the “stand alones” came with a new class.
Prophecies did not have new professions.
Guild Wars 1 had 2 character slots. All of the stand-alone campaigns (nightfalls, prophecies, factions) added 2 additional character slots. Prophecies did not add new professions, but still gave you 2 character slots.
The non-stand alone expansions did not give additional character slots. The stand alone campaigns gave you 2 character slots because they were stand-alone, simple as that. They needed to have character slots because people could very well pick them up on their own and play them.
The direct expansion EotN did not have character slots because it was only playable if you had Guild Wars to already give you character slots. This is wrong. Had to come on to correct this.
How the campaigns worked is: the first campaign added gave you 4 character slots. Adding the other campaigns added 2 slots each (total 8, if you had all 3 campaigns on your account). This was true regardless of what order the campaigns were added.
I agree that ANet’s history is to provide additional character slots equal to the number of new professions (classes, whatever) added. Hence, I would expect one to be included with (and built into the price of) HoT.
Isnt that what I said?
Maybe it was a bit unclear when I said the stand alone campaigns add 2 slots. What I meant was they add 2 slots each. Each stand alone, be it prophecies, nightfall or factions, adds 2 slots. If you get all of them you get 6 slots, not counting the 2 slots from Guild Wars.
But the point was that the idea that this…
But EOTN also didn’t include any new professions. Historically ArenaNet has given a slot per profession in the past.
…Is incorrect. Prophecies used the same 6 base professions that Guild Wars had, it did not add new professions, yet it still added 2 character slots.
Or rather, it had its own 2 character slots being a stand-alone title. And each stand-alone title would stack with each other.
Prophecies is the first Guild Wars. When it came out it was just called Guild Wars, when they added Factions and Nightfall, the original Guild Wars was renamed Guild Wars: Prophecies. I was there, from the beginning, for Gwen’s flame cleansing of our guild hall!
The three GW1 campaigns were each stand-alone games, so each had to come with character slots to be playable if you didn’t have any of the other campaigns. EotN, however, was a true expansion that required the player to have at least one of the campaigns. EotN did not include any character slots, since those were provided by the base game. Personally, I don’t expect HoT to include any slots, though I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
But EOTN also didn’t include any new professions. Historically ArenaNet has given a slot per profession in the past.
people really need to stop making stupid assumptions and going crazy over it, we don’t know how many specializations each class will get, so assuming that it’s only 1 is kinda stupid.
Rude and wrong.
“Specializations is a new system that allows you to take each of the professions we have in the game and grow them almost into a new sub-profession or secondary profession. An example of this is, a Ranger can become a Druid. Once a Ranger becomes a Druid, they have the ability to use the powers of the jungle and that gives them new skills, new traits, they can use a new weapon that a Ranger could never use before, and they get new profession mechanics that fundamentally change the way a Ranger plays when they become a Druid. Each of the professions will be getting one of these Specializations and this also is a framework that we’ll use to grow the professions in the future. This will be the way we add more skills, traits, and abilities to the game moving forward. That’s how we’re growing our existing professions.”
What would you do if/when sylvari go rogue?

I learned that I love salad for every meal of the day.
Given the anatomy of a sylvari, that could mean anything from cannibalism to a very naughty proposal.
That’s why I’m skeptical. If the price matches the value I’ll definitely buy, If not, I’ll wait for a sale.
if u dont like dont buy it =)
How would I know if I like it if I haven’t tried it? To try this expansion I am forced to buy it. #mindblown
No, there will be beta events.
I’m basing this off an article posted here by another person but Colin says in that article that fundamentally they are very much like secondary professions in GW1. It’s stated that when you as a ranger decide to become a druid you still have access to everything “ranger” and now you have the druid skills and abilities too. The way I read that is that we would be able to use our other weapons as a druid too, but this part is my assumption based on the article and not a statement from ArenaNet.

Did someone already mention Mesmer → Chronomancer?
I made a funny reply earlier (ok, I thought it was funny) and I hope no one took it seriously. But all I can honestly say is that I played GW1 from the beginning, bought Factions and Nightfall when they came out and bought EOTN (the only true expansion) when it was released.
I can’t really find meaningful words to express how important our guild hall was to me other than to say when I logged in to the game my character was in our guild hall. When I needed to access my storage or sell to a merchant I went to my guild hall. When I was done for the day I returned to my guild hall.
I have group screenshots of our guild, individual screenshots of close friends from our guild, and “couples” shots with friends and family from our guild. All of those were taken in my guild hall. I really miss the closeness and the feeling of belonging to a family that exclusive guilds and guild halls brought to me in GW1.

I know it’s early and we don’t have all the info, but when the interviewer compared the new mastery system to a “gear check” and that idea wasn’t shot down in the response, that gets me a little worried.
What we know about this expansion so far leaves me very skeptical and cautious. I will be waiting to hear more and maybe even waiting for a sale if I don’t find it worth what they’re asking. I’m in the boat of the doubters, but we really do need much more information before making an informed decision.
GW2 was my second mmo after Lotro and I experienced worst dungeon system here that are just skip trash and kill boss, zerk zerk zerk…
While I too hate the zerg mentality I believe that can be fixed with more strategic encounters and better boss mechanics. I for one am glad the trinity is dead, I hated playing whack-a-mole with red bars.
And then Gwen will kill Rytlock for being a charr.
All will be right with the world
I’m hoping Gwen and Rytlock will team up to kill Logan for being a coward who runs away from his friends before a fight.
I watched the PAX announcement and heard the speech by Mike O’brien. GW2 hailed for it’s friendly and helpful community? I guess those reviewers don’t browse the forums!
You people realize it’s actually possible to thoughtfully and civilly disagree with someone without resorting to personal attacks right? Apparently not.
Okay so Rylock is transformed, comes back as a Revenant. It’s part of the Living Story.
We now get to start a character as a Revenant. Any race. From the beginning.
Which means we get to face Zhaitan as a Revenant, when in theory that precedes the introduction of Revanant to the world. It really is like rewriting history.
Stuff like this always annoys me.
You’re forgetting your Temporal Dynamics! When dealing with a temporal event it is possible to observe effects before the event that causes it occurs. (yes, I’m a Star Trek geek)
In other words, wibbly wobbly, timey wimey.

I went back and highlighted two specific areas where I stated I didn’t “know everything” about the new expansion. Before you are rude and condescending to someone you might want to read for comprehension and not for how to be the biggest ….
So people shouldn’t make rude and condescending remarks about your rude and condescending remarks? Gotcha.
I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist the sarcastic generalization and apologies for that. However, just like you just said, no one should be making calls on its scale before we see it, neither you nor me. The Maguuma jungle could be about the size of Lomar’s pass, or Tyria. You don’t know. I don’t know. Kittens, from what Gaile has been saying, the devs themselves might not know were they want it to end.
You’re right to call me out, I shouldn’t have responded in kind. I’ve just seen one to many personal attacks when I’ve been stating my position without attacking. It’s like I can’t have a viewpoint that might be critical of ArenaNet without being a stupid, immature, entitled, whiny “kid”. In another thread I’m told to stop whining and ask mommy for more allowance?! Ok, disagreeing with ArenaNet makes me young again… I can live with that, I’d love to be living in my parent’s house for free again.
Oh well, time to edit a post and take out the personal crap.
I pre-ordered GW2 with no prior Guild Wars experience. Since then GW1 vets have been demanding guild halls. From what I’ve heard, i don’t think they really have a place in GW2. What am i missing?
It’s a Guild Hall thing, you wouldn’t understand.

God people are so cheap. -_- It certainly isn’t going to be $20 people.
It better be less based on the anemic content.
No, it’s obviously going to be more. And I don’t get why you think it’s “anemic” content. New zones, new class, new specializations, challenging group content (still unknown though), revamp of WvW and a new map, new PvP mode, Guild Halls. These are all expansion type content.
Have people not bought expansions for other games before? They typically cost the same as a normal game.
Stop being so kitten cheap people. There is no sub here.
Guild Wars: Eye of the North expansion:
The expansion introduces:
41 new armor sets, including rare, stand-alone pieces
100 new profession-specific skills (10 per profession, none of which are elite)
50 new PvE only skills including 3 elite skills
10 new heroes
18 Dungeons
124 new quests
The Hall of Monuments, a place which allows you to obtain unique titles, companions, weapons, armor, and miniatures in Guild Wars 2 based on your achievements in the original Guild Wars. The Hall of Monuments does not support the transfer of characters or gold.
Actions have more consequences. For example, if you lose NPCs that help you, you can choose to continue without them (and their help) instead of being forced to try again (although you may start over with a clean slate by going back to town). Similarly, if you rescue NPCs, they may join you and help you.
More than the previous campaigns, Eye of the North is full of easter eggs and “hidden” quests, which are not immediately accessible.
4 new regions
Charr Homelands
The green homeland of the Charr, north of Ascalon and east to the Far Shiverpeaks.
Depths of Tyria
An immense interconnected underground complex of natural caves and excavated areas underneath Tyria.
Far Shiverpeaks
A desolate mountain range to the north of the Shiverpeak Mountains we know. It is home to the Norn and the Ebon Vanguard.
Tarnished Coast
An area of high magical energy, and home to the Asura.

I don’t know the final specs for this new expansion because they haven’t told any of us that info, but what they have told us is NOT a lot of content.
Even if they don’t add any more content, if this expansion came out for $10-20 I’d say that’s fair. If they ask $30-40 for just what we know, I won’t be buying it.

I did not play GW1 at that time, so I am probably not as much blindly in love with that game as some others here are, yet I am still playing it to get my HoM achievements and that comment made me laugh to great length.
41 new armor sets ? No, there were 4 by class. They may have had a different appearance by classes, but you should remember that they all were low quality models that did not require much work.
100 new profession skills ? Yes, but it was only 10 by class. Classes that already counted about a hundred of skills. Many of which were redundant. Quite useless in fact. They could have added 10k skills to each classes without anyone taking notice of the difference.
Hereos do not apply
18 new dungeons ? Are you really serious ? Did you play recently to GW1 ? EotN dungeons are just so awfull, stuffs made of 3-4 tiny and ugly disconnected areas without any specific boss mechanic, with almost no specific art.
Quests do not apply
4 new regions. What exactly tells you that HoT will have less. They are just words yes, but Colin spoke of “tremendous space”
People that think they know everything of the extension based on an one hour long speach that was meant to only put the spotlight on the brand new features really make me laugh. I humbly suggest you buy yourself a crystal ball and start predicting people their future.

I think core assets for guilds such as a banker, a trading post assistant, the guild bank, etc, should be easy to acquire no matter what size your guild is. Anything cosmetic, anything that expands the size of your hall or adds to the unique and rich look and feel of your hall, those should be the items you work for.
Bear in mind the eotn zones had very little substance in them in places. Some were just tranisitional to other zones. GW2 zones are considerably different and generally contain a higher level of replay value.
Since no detail has yet been given, it is neither or logically possible to compare EOTN to HoT. That time will come towards or after release.
In terms of how the living story will work and segregation occurs, I think it likely some will happen since that it is the natural yet unfortunate side effect of most expansions. However, much is yet to be revealed in the coming deep dives which will hopefully explain more. Im sure Gail for one will be collating this in her feedback as well.
Believe it or not I actually agree with most of what you’ve said. My reason/point/whatever for comparing the only other ArenaNet expansion to this one is to say there’s reason to be skeptical and hesitant regarding this content.
The “hype train” is swooping the community up so much that some people are competing as to how high they’d pay for this. We don’t know everything about this content yet – that’s obvious – but even if this is all there is, if it came at a $10-20 price point I’d definitely consider it. If it came at a $30-40 price point I’d definitely skip it.
If, after we learn everything there is to learn about this new content, we find it’s a great amount of content for the price I’ll be the first to be glad my skeptical outlook was wrong.
I just don’t think I would call all of these features expansion worthy comparing it to other MMO expansions.
Exactly! This “expansion” is pretty anemic even when compared with EOTN let alone an expansion from a current AAA mmo.
So a new class, a new way of playing all existing classes, a new way to WvW, a new way to sPvP, guild halls, a area Anet keeps saying will be really really big, and what amounts to leveling up when you’re level cap can’t compare to WotLK? I find this weird, especially since we’ve yet to see how extensive the things are.
