No, unfortunately we have an economist who thinks pure free market is good. If you agree, perhaps you’ve never heard of Enron. You need regulation to keep greedy corporations (players) from pillaging.

I for one think that this was still the right way to go. Changes that have been made since the game’s launch have made Karma easier and easier to obtain, leading it to becoming the functionally useless number that it was(with some exceptions). Last year, Karma was only available from Dynamic Events and was character bound. Since then, they’ve added karma to dailies and monthlies, dungeon trips, bosses, and the occasional consumable. The ability to gain karma had long outgrown people’s ability to spend it, and a pull back was long overdue. Now that they’ve added ascended crafting they’ve toned down people’s ability to get karma.

Go out, do events, play the game with people. Its all they want. Its all they’ve ever wanted. You’ll still earn more than enough karma.

Oh I do play in the world. I don’t chase these silly LS farming updates. But I do spend a LOT of karma to unlock every recipe for every crafting profession. I’ve purchased a LOT of karma gear and ingredients and I’m not sitting on a stockpile of karma.

I might be in the minority here, just like I’m in the minority of not farming these silly LS farm fests that has everyone yelling at each other in chat. But even if I am in the minority, why should I be penalized especially at a point where karma is needed to unlock ascended recipes? Also it was really “nice” of ArenaNet to give us the laurel vendor to spend all of our laurels on fun items as a little reward for doing dailies and monthlies only to lock other ascended recipes behind laurel purchases.

So what next when luck is maxed?

Do we continue to get ‘Essence of Luck’ from daily/monthly instead of karma? Once Luck is maxed do we just continue to get another useless item that can’t be traded or forged or sold or anything else useful?

There should be an option on the daily and monthly, to either accept karma or magic find as the reward.

No mine is not maxed, that would be insane. I’m on 103%. Just thinking about the future…

When my luck is maxed It’ll probably be time for me to pick a good retirement home.

You know what happens when ArenaNet releases content that only a small percentage of people can achieve? Well, the other percentage, aka the majority, gets mad or frustrated. And what happens if it happens too often? They leave.

This isn’t a small confidential game. This is a Triple-A game. They want (need) a lot of players. They already kitten ed us off not too long ago with that freaking arena. I don’t think it’s in their best interest to make something that hard so soon.

I completely respect your view but for SAB I disagree. It’s a small, almost experiment inside the game. An 8bit oasis that doesn’t appeal to me but does to some. Should 90% of the players get upset when another fractals dungeon get released? Or another map for PvP? I personally have no problem with a release of a new SAB zone with TM added for those who are masochists.

The problem is that ArenaNet is happy with the direction this is going. They have their metrics showing more and more people logging in on a daily basis. The problem is that these are the people who burn through content as fast as possible, and no matter what is added, they’ll be leaving this game as soon as the next big MMO is released.

ArneaNet is no longer building their game or even their fanbase’s game. They’re creating content geared towards these MMO hoppers.

BilboBaggins.5620

I had way too much Karma, that I was running out of things to use it on. Over 7 million from the start of the game until now. And that’s only a fraction of the Karma gains of some players.

I’m glad they reduced the output. With Karma being so easy to get, it made it less desirable to get. Plus, now that there’s no Karma gain from failed events, that gives more incentive to people to actually succeed for the awards.

I say “Good Job” Anet. A well welcomed change.

The only problem is karma was not the reason people were failing the events. Mob drops were. It in no way really cures that problem.

Very true, but karma gained from failed events were so small that i won’t miss them either way. Removing the jugs of karma from daily and monthly achievements however is going to severely hamper me.

"Play the way you want"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BilboBaggins.5620

BilboBaggins.5620

Actually you are wrong. lol

Anet explained what it meant and gave several examples, with regards to leveling. Again this goes back to what they said about grind.

In most games, in order to level you have to go from quest hub to quest hub, getting experience, until you do all the quests and then you move to the next quest hub.

In Guild Wars 2, you can level quick through crafting, slowly through WvW (but not as slowly as most games still), through dynamic events. You can stay in Queensdale and reach level 80 without ever going to the next quest hub. You can level once you get to level 30 to max level doing dungeons. Not just that but by repeating the same dungeon over and over if you like.

You have leveling options here like no other game.

And after that you can STILL go to Queensdale and spend the rest of your life doing those dynamic events. We know this because this is what some people do.

That’s what Anet meant by play the way you like. They gave you a theme park of options.

And lately that has changed. If you want ascended weapons you have to do specific content. Not very specific, but some specific content. Essentially they’re saying play the game if you want this.

The question is, is that fair enough.

Some people will say yes, some people will say no.

Very well put, and without shots at either side of the argument. I wish everyone posted with this much civility.

Yeah, you would hope they are tracking the TP. Now it’s whether or not they do something about it… It still may not be bots though, you have to remember the TP is across every player in the entire game and ArenaNet made massive(ly bad) changes this patch which threw everything out of whack. So it may just be tens of thousands of players trying to get rich off the changes. I intend to stay away from the TP for MONTHS before trying to buy anything.

Yes, but usually those outbidding buy orders are just used to inflate the price to the point needed to reach a large quantity sell order that was posted by the person bumping the buy prices.

Then greedy folk see this item rising quickly in price and say “ooh, I can make a killing on this”, and buy up all the inflated stock. Then prices level off. The bumper makes a lot of gold and the speculators lose a lot of gold.

I am not a bot, I’m a human being. But it’s not me this time.

I do something like this when playing the market. I put in bids starting with A’s (or Berserker) work my way to the end and they go back to the start and update any bid that’s no longer the highest. Rinse, repeat for and hour or two then cash out. Entirely manually. No automation, just a mix of asperger, OCD and market PvP.

And for the most part it only hurts the people looking to make a quick buck off of someone, but there are the rest of us forced to wait for the feeding frenzy to stop. Also, unfortunately, this game has rampant inflation so these prices always level off at a higher price point, especially after all of these “wonderful” changes in the last patch!

I really don’t think it’s a bot. There are entire guilds pooling gold resources to artificially inflate prices and gouge people once they bump the price over a certain threshold. The economy in this game is severely broken but nobody seems to want to acknowledge what’s staring them in the face. I think ArenaNet’s economist wanted a ‘pure’ free market. Well, this is a pure free market with no regulation, companies (players/guilds) will take advantage and kork as many people as they can in their quest for more money (gold). Anyone remember Enron?!

I think that’s a bit of a conspiracy theory there, suggesting that they are gating karma hardcore just to keep people playing longer.

I think it’s far more likely that karma jugs will be on the gem store soon, but they didn’t want to make this karma nerf at the same time or people would quickly come to that conclusion. I’m thinking November or December- karma jugs on gem store.

While I dislike a LOT of the recent changes ArenaNet has made, I don’t think they’ll ever sell karma on the gem store. That would really make this game P2W and definitely be an ‘I quit’ moment for me.

I’m just saying this only as pros and no cons, it’s a good idea. I doubt it’ll ever be completed, though. we’ve been asking for this for the last 10 months, and they haven’t made one TP change in all that time, much less one that is frequently asked for, so I have no faith this will ever be done.

This will mainly be used by TP players to quickly buy out a material to inflate prices. To me that’s a big negative.

I would just like to ask a question here.

can you name an MMO that doesn’t rely on time gating?

Time Gating exists because there is a type of player, commonly called a “content locust”, who will burn though content at the fastest possible speed and then call (loudly) for more.

This isn’t necessarily a defense of a-net, more-so an explanation as t why I think Time Gating was Implemented.

Then let them burn through the content and leave. They’re going to leave when the next big MMO releases anyway.

No it’s an ssd and my rig is behind yours so I’m not sure why you’re getting longer load times than me, I was even thinking about upgrading to the i7 from my i5. My only other thought is maybe I’m closer to the server than you, or am getting better routing? Do you know your ping times? I get 20-30ms for the most part.

Apparently that’s the price it needs to be to get people out of fractals to go cut down trees.

Who got benefit from this course of events:

- speculators
- lumberjacks

Who got damaged
- Fractal runners
- WWW players

Dear Mr John will you someday consider that normal players who plays the game are paying NOT only all the price of deflation, but also a huge margin that will end in the speculator s pocket.

Fractal players are forced to pay the toll to get back to what they “like to play” (citation).

I think you should find something more fair to keep deflation in check and ecourage less speculators…as its now despite global economy may work, if you look who pays the deflation is a mess

Thank you.

Unfortunately a lot of the recent changes are all about carrots dangling in front of you to entice you to log in daily and grind for these items. I would suggest you do what I’ve done… I’ve resigned myself to the fact that there are some things in this game i will NEVER have because I’m a casual player. I’m not going to grind for something at the expense of having fun in this game.

Wait for a while and hope prices on materials drop again after the rush to hit 500 is over. Take a bit longer and gather the materials yourself, or just stick with exotic gear and have fun in the world. With any new content, I always ask myself “Am I having fun?”. If the answer is no, I avoid that content like the plague.

And no, providing ArenaNet with feedback on what you don’t like is never being childish.

Holy Grind Wars 2!

BilboBaggins.5620

All of the recent changes from the two week living story updates, the achievement rewards, the magic find changes, the crafting reset, and the time-gated ascended gear (along with some I’m sure I forgot to mention) have one very basic, undeniable goal… they are all geared to get you playing this game on a daily basis or forever fall behind those that can/do.

I know that there is a group of MMO players out there that love this kind of grind/progression, and I’m not going to knock someone for liking that. However, there are many MMOs already on the market that cater to that playstyle and Guild Wars 2 was not supposed to be one of them!

I bought this game because I loved the original Guild Wars and loved that they were going to keep the same basic design philosophy and just push the envelope further. ArenaNet saw people complaining and leaving because the grind/progression wasn’t there for them at end-game and they scrambled to get them back. Unfortunately they never stopped to ask themselves how players like me would feel about these changes.

I still love this game, and I’m not leaving. I’ve basically resigned myself to the knowledge that grinders are going to surpass me even though they start playing a year after I did. I know there will be items that I will NEVER have because of the way I choose to play, but I refuse to jump on the grind treadmill at the expense of my fun. I can still have fun in this game if I choose to ignore content that is not intended to appeal to me. It doesn’t mean I have to like this change in direction, or be silent and not provide feedback, and I know there are many of you who will not agree with my viewpoint and that is fine.

I just wish ArenaNet would have stuck with their core philosophy of being the anti-grind MMO because I honestly believe the players who enjoy this grind/progression style will abandon this game as soon as a WoW type successor is launched.

I’d just like to make one final point, a lot of these changes are not about making challenging content to keep epic rewards rare, they are to slow progression towards things that were much easier to acquire in the original game. The changes to Tequatl illustrates ArenaNet improving an encounter to make epic loot feel deserved after a difficult encounter. The change to magic find is just a tedious multi-year grind intended to provide a carrot to log in daily all so you can earn a few more green drops.

When you are done chasing MF [in five years], you can SELL your greens at quite a bit more than vendor price to people who are still in the hunt.

It will take millions of salvages to reach 300% mf, this seems a bit excessive. (bold added by me)

Wow, and it was so easy to reach 300% mf before… two traveller’s runes and an omnom bar and poof! 300%.

It’s a goal to strive for, not something to be handed out like beads at Mardi Gras.

A difficult goal to strive for in an MMO should take months, maybe a year, not half the life of the game. If you love endless grind I can see how this change would be great for you. I bought GW2 because it was supposed to be the anti-grind MMO.

Besides goals should be challenges to be accomplished. This isn’t some difficult challenge with a great reward to be earned, it’s just a carrot on a stick to further add to the need to log in daily or fall further behind.

This addition is not some great mechanic… what is it they say you can’t polish?

I love this idea. It would make book carts USEFUL too! I like the thought of archived articles as well. It would give a sense of time and progression.

I think it would be a great collectible thing.

Imagine under your Story section in your Hero Panel there is an option for Tyria Gazette. You select it and it brings up a list of all the archived versions of the paper you’ve purchased. Current versions would be given free at the Herald and Archived versions would be sold for coin or karma at the Book Carts/Vendors. Then just like you can read back on your personal story, you could read back on the events of Tyria.

There are collectors in game who would purchase them all just to say they had them! And personally I think it would be fun, to be able to read back on the history of Tyria whenever I wanted.

I love the OP’s idea and I really love your spin on it! I would definitely want to collect the papers and have a library of Tyrian history!

This is a cool idea. Thanks for sharing.

We’re currently discussing ideas on how to “catch people up” with past Living World events to give them context on current events and recent history. The system that’s currently in development will hopefully go a long way in presenting a clearer picture of some of the story content in the game. That stated, having a newspaper is a neat concept.

More than neat, it is AWESOME! And a collectible paper would be the best way to go. I would love to have my own library of Tryian history!!!

We definitely don’t want to go to the level of fragmenting the game to the extent that we have PvP, WvW, and PvE versions of all the skills as that creates a disconnect with the characters we want you to use in all those places. That said, we are certainly discussing the idea of adding skills that would have a WvW focus. But they are just on the discussion level.

So the way this was handled in GW1 was bad?

Yes. Not only was it incredibly complex to maintain it became completely unwieldy to players as well. GW2 has made a great number of changes to systems specifically to avoid the complications we created in GW1. Not creating multiple versions of skills for 3 areas of the game would be one of those changes.

Absolutely love to hear this. I hated the way skills in GW1 could be completely different from PvE to PvP!

As someone who can only play on the weekends (usually), time-gating means it will be years before I can outfit all of my characters. For a daily player, it will take two weeks per item.

So i just sent 7g to friend to buy me a frost dye kit (bullkitten but whatever, i have a lesson). I had 75g. 75-7 is 68. Now i have 56g.

Earlier today i bought, well, TRIED to buy some weapons from TP. It didn’t work, there was message saying there are no listings blah blah, tp didn’t work back then.

So my guess is, game sucked my gold. I just want it back. TYVM.

I’ve gotten the “sorry” message from TP before even though the purchase went through. My guess is if you check the TP you’ll find the items you tried to purchase there.

Should’ve just been one gift for the whole account and made good.

Then make sure to call it an anniversary present instead of a birthday present. I prefer the extra scrolls and boosts this way, but I’d have no problem with a single account present, the 8 mini queens just seems silly.

Ohh look another thread about the birthday gift. It is great you feel entitled enough to complain about a free item. Glad you had to make your own thread instead of commenting on the other ones.

You are a closed-minded sheep. The OP has every right to be sore. You would be complaining too if you actually played GW1.

That doesn’t make any sense.

Following “closed-minded sheep” with such a ridiculous absolute statement makes for quite the ironic post.

Definitely bad manners. The OP’s feelings, like anyone’s, are neither right nor wrong, he fells how he feels. He does have a right to post feedback to a company he purchased a product from, and he should be able to do it without ridicule from the community. Just like you should be able to post an opposing viewpoint without ridicule.

I’m just pointing out that saying “You would be complaining too if you actually played GW1.” is a false absolute statement that seems to exclude other viewpoints. And it was stated after using a phrase that implied others were excluding other viewpoints.

I haven’t made a statement about the OP.

You misunderstood, I meant that the person responding to you definitely showed bad manners by name-calling rather than reasoned argument. Sorry for the confusion.

Indeed, a random mini would certainly have been more interesting. Giving out so many duplicates does seem a little strange, and I’d be much more concerned if this were a reward for, well, anything. I’m just disheartened by the degree of anger I see.

And providing that feedback is perfectly fine and does not, like you said, necessarily indicate a sense of entitlement. I can’t help but start to think that way, however, when some are showing so much anger or disappointment over an unmet expectation that may not have been warranted since it was never promised or foreshadowed.

Oh, believe me, I wholeheartedly agree that feedback, both positive and negative, should be given in an intelligent, constructive manner. (and I sometimes fail at that myself, but I try)

No specific call-out because I know that’s against the TOS, but could I get an official response please? I was really looking forward to this and couldn’t be there for the live stream (if it took place).

Did anyone view the live stream?

The reward clearly isn’t universally bad. Some are enjoying it.

When I open my eyes, I see a lvl 20 scroll, a birthday booster, and a Queen Jennah mini. The extra minis and scrolls aren’t of any use to me, but the boosters can be. Thus, I see a positive outcome. A different mini for each gift like in GW1 would have certainly been more interesting. However, I see no reason to become more than momentarily unimpressed and certainly no reason to become angry.

I agree with you and everyone else that there were valuable gifts in the birthday present. I’m not angry at ArenaNet, I just think it was kinda cheap and easy to give out identical minis instead of keeping the mystery of random chance. And yes, I know a lot of people are screaming about rng, I’m not one of them. I don’t seem to do very well, but I don’t mind it (maybe because I played D&D).

So yeah, I’m just basically providing feedback to ArenaNet that I would’ve preferred a random mini to 8 identical ones. ArenaNet has the choice to do whatever they want with that feedback, but it’s definitely not a sense of ‘entitlement’.

My parents have both died. My dad died a painless but slow death. My mom was found lying on the bathroom floor on Christmas Eve.

Bad things happen everywhere to everyone at some time. That doesn’t mean that people can’t complain about the small things and want sympathy or it to be changed.

But… anyone who doesn’t just bend over and take it is someone who thinks they’re entitled to better. Entitled! Do you have any idea how despicable they are? Forget definitions, they think they’re Entitled to improvements!

There’s a difference between feeling entitled and disappointed. I am disappointed because in GW1, their small but thoughtful birthday gift was actually unique and tradeable, which made me feel appreciated as a customer for being loyal. It is part of the reason I respected ANet so much as a company. Now this, among many other things over the past year, have shown that they care a lot less about their customers and more about getting their money. It is disappointing to me.

I 100% agree with you. My post was just to point out the idiocy of people like Zypher, who think anyone voicing an opinion that isn’t “BOY I LOVE THIS” being indicative of a sense of entitlement. You’ll see that a lot on these forums.

And there seldom seems to be moderator intervention, but be rude when bringing up a flaw…
