Useful for small groups out capping camps and whatnot. Helps you stay together and helps you keep communication up. If for instance you die and have to respawn it makes it easy to find your group again.
Also if you are separated from your group and get into a fight, it’s easy for your group to see this is happening from your status bar and come to your aid. They can see your health what conditions you are suffering and where you are on the map.
Yes. Also good for small groups is the targeting system. If you zerg though, the targeting system is pretty useless I think.

So far I am liking the arrow cart changes. It seems like structures are harder to take, and now some investment in time and strategy has to be employed. No more “set three rams down and rush the Lord before the enemy can respond go go go”. As an effect, we have noticed that the zergs roaming, flipping camps, and chasing my 5 man around a lot less. Unfortunately though with the zergs not being as “roamy”, there are less stragglers to gank. So far the positives outweigh the negatives for a non-zerg group for once!

I know what you mean! I constantly see people from guilds who chest thump all the time and all they do is run from 1v1s against me. TW, Choo, Riot, etc. They all run. We should have another 20 minute duel neither of us can win so I can remember what its like to fight someone with skill.
Oh yeah, RIOT is the next TW/Choo on Blackgate! You better look out!

Well, his problem is that the game is all about objectives, which get flipped fast by large forces.
WvW is extremely objective oriented. Killing reinforcements, defending to slow attackers, etc., all give little reward.
Just have to do it for fun. Plus the rank rewards are not needed, except the AC range one. That ups its range so much, I consider it a must have now.
In general, the devs seem to have this idea that WvW should only be big fights. If you want smakll fights goto sPvP. Granted sPvP gets old fast but that is what they seem to want.
Yeah, Anet devs seem a little out of touch when it comes to small group play in WvW. I do think that making towers/keeps easier to defend with arrow carts, and thus keeping the zerg busy doing what the zerg was intended to do, was a step in the right direction.

However, I do want to stay in the loop on this and see where it goes. Feel free to PM me a teamspeak address, and a day/time. I can’t be on until after 6:30 pm PST/9:30 pm EST on weeknights.

Thank you Talentless for pointing me to this thread. While RIOT has talked about transferring, we currently are not going to do it. I will definitely monitor this thread and see where this leads.
One issue we had with tiers lower than tier 2 is that there isn’t a lot of action outside of prime time. In addition to that, when we play we tend to dominate the enemy’s small pugs/groups, and they either end up leaving the BL or zerging us. At least in T1/2 small groups are competitive, and there is more of them.
If your small group is leaving T1, please post it here. The more of you that leave JQ/SoR, the worse our gameplay will get in this tier, and it might make an impact on whether or not we transfer. Thank you!

I hear maps are in the works.
Glad they prioritized mechanics actually, though I want maps too.
I still resent WAR for throwing in big speakers before getting the rust work finished. That is good news, I hope they can roll em out before summer.
Yeah, WAR… I enjoyed the combat there but so many mechanical problems in the big fights. Took over a year for it to be reasonably working. Culling was annoying but nothing compared the the intense lag and server crashes in WAR during the first 3-5 months.
Its funny, Aion was fun because flying combat was different and fun (IMO) but man the grind, and WAR was also fun but had its problems. Rift had some good classes and combat but just abandoned PvP since the PvP in open world was crashing their servers. All had many core ideas done well but none were close to a complete package. WAR was probably the closest.
… heh, was gonna go into a long littany of stuff but just not the proper thread for “why we can’t or haven’t had another DAoC” yet. I also greatly enjoyed Shadowbane but I can’t imagine another game being like that ever again, it was unique.
AT least GW2 is good/solid. It lacks a couple key RvR/WvW elements but overall very well done. My personal contention is that I like more choices when fighting, so the 10-14 ability buttons seem a bit low to me, but that is my preference, not a knock on the game. If they ever allow for easy switching of traits and gear, I’ll be very happy since then I can switch around ‘on the fly’ and get more interesting gameplay.
You can switch traits/gear the moment you’re out of combat. I do frequently, adds value to scouting.
I don’t believe even DAoC was as good as people remember, much like pining after lost youth.
This is vanilla GW2. Compared to what I’ve seen, this one has potential. I’d like to see an 8year old gw2.
I went and played uthgard last year for a while before GW2 came out, and yeah, DAoC is still the best PvP game ever made.
Why am I not playing it? Well, Uthgard’s NA population is too low to keep the RvR fun.

http://teamriot.org/riot-media/videos/ • http://www.twitch.tv/teamriottv
^Thanks.
A buddy of mine who some of you may know, Yishis, made a good point about how WXP is coded. Since the XP/Karma system is based on everyone getting the same amount for tapping a mob once, it would be cumbersome on their development team to do it differently for WXP. If that is the case, then we will not see any changes for a long time I think.
http://teamriot.org/riot-media/videos/ • http://www.twitch.tv/teamriottv
There are a few things off about each person getting 60 wexp going 30v1 against someone caught offguard, but it’s not like they have to pay larger repair bills or make longer walks back to where they wanted to go because more people killed them.
This is correct. As others have said in this thread, this game is about “everyone working together” (aka zerging). On a macro level, you want your server to earn as much WXP collectively as possible, and as such zerging is the most effective way to do it. A small group could win 5v10, but their risk factor is high while their reward is quite low as compared to if they were to join the zerg and win 60v40.
So, zerging = low risk and high reward. Small man skirmishing = high risk and low reward.
If WXP was divided, yes people would kitten about others helping. <crochity voice> In my day we called this “adding” on fights, and it was considered rude by non-zergers.</crochity voice> However only the small group players cared. Zerg players would continue to not care, since more numbers equal greater chances for WXP. Splitting PvP points is not a new concept in MMO’s (DAoC, Warhammer, Camelot Unchained, etc). It does encourage small group PvP, but it also creates elitism by encouraging players to play better.
Myself, I am quite proud to be Rank 14 and destroying people who are twice or three times as high of a rank when I catch them away from their zerg.

Real good fun fighting with TW / TWL and SF on SoR BL tonight!
Still kicking ourselves in the kitten for letting you TW/TWL guys weasel in from north outer on Bay. >_<Thanks for all the good fights, GoF did as best we could with what we had!
Really wish we were fast enough to join or at least could have watched that 10 minute battle for inner bay, seemed like an epic one between SoR and BG. Lot of action on the BL tonight, good times
Yeah we battled it out at Bay for about 30 minutes. We were hoping you guys would tap some of their stuff and they would pull out, but to no avail
Once again, great fights guys!
Tonight was mostly just the 15 of us SF getting a feel for TW play style since it has been so long since we’ve regularly fought them. By the time the meeting finished the orange swords were in inner bay so we didn’t really have time to get a proper 3 way map fight going.
I was watching the north while we were hitting bay. JQ had a 30-40 man hit Dawns, then move to NE Garrison, then come back to Dawns, then move to Spirit. We had a few people in each spot to call out for reinforcements, but it never looked like there was any danger.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. SF never runs more than 15. Our roster is maybe 25 large at best.
We’ve been noticing the SF small groups, and appreciate it very much.
Hopefully we don’t zerg you with our 5-10 when you are less than us.

We have plenty of decent havoc groups. The good ones just avoid the 40 man TW blob, so you never see us.
TW does have its own havoc groups out at times, maybe not as much as we would like but when we do it seems you need at least 10+ to kill 4 of us. : )
PLEASE field your havoc groups more next week during NA PST evenings! I’ve got a good fraps of us 7v20 against Fire recently that I hope to post up in a week or two, and I’d love to get some TW footage in there! Look for the RIOT tag.

Great fights last night on JQ BL!
RIOT had our five man roaming squad and we ended up running along with Pro’s five man after capping the west supply camp. We happened on 8-10 JQ at the sentry below Keep who immediately ran from us and got strung out. Easy pickings. Then when we looked down into the quarry supply camp we saw a group of SoR and a group of JQ, each about 6-7 strong, standing on opposite ends of the camp with a bunch of AOE circles in between them. Ran down and rolled the JQ group whilst SoR stood by. Once we were finished with JQ we wiped the SoR group. I guess you guys were waiting for JQ to soften us up a bit? Anyway, lots of fun. Props to Pro and props to JQ and SoR for not calling in an airstrike whenever we show up
There were a lot of good small group fights last night. Hope that trend continues with small havoc groups coming up on one another. Nothing worse than capping a supply camp and having the enemy server exercise their nuclear option on you, rolling you with three or four times your groups number.
This is a funny post, you talk about killing groups smaller than you repeatedly, then say youre glad you didnt run into a group larger than yours because you would of died.
We do usually run with a “if its red its dead” policy. Sorry if we zerged you with our 5-10 man. This particular fight we were out numbered by both JQ and SoR independently of each other.

Heh, I just deal with facts. I woke up to what was a close match for the first 10 hours on reset night to a 12k lead once the 4am shift took over. Are you denying this never happened?
Well maybe he is implying that BG and SoR don’t upgrade, siege up, repair, and make sure supply gets in. I think every SoR and BG player knows better though.
I wonder what would happen if FOO took a week off?
Sorry covenn. While we are good at sieging up our keeps and towers, we are terrible at walking supply. It’s usually a few dedicated people on SoR walking Yaks, and usually not enough to prevent Yak ganking by organized havok squads.
Actually, I like to think that NA BG has some pretty good havok squads. We really don’t see much yak walking/sentry guarding or even supply camp guarding from SoR or JQ after we make our presence known in an area. Of course, we welcome you to bring more people to walk yaks… please!!
FoO would be a lot of fun to play against judging based on this discussion.
You do realize that 40 people is generally too big to be considered a havoc squad, yes?
You do realize that Team Riot fields 5-10 players if we are lucky and doesn’t zerg, yes? And we’re not the only 5-10 man guild on BG that roams. You need to get out of your zerg more often, bro!

I would probably recommend SoR for the average zerg player. SoR’s zergs are generally larger than BG’s and comparable to JQ’s. They are very organized as well, if you like that sort of game play. If you like small skirmishes, BG has a lot of small groups to fight against. However, SoR lacks a lot of small skirmish groups to play with, so you would kind of be on your own unless you joined a guild like CD.
BG is a good server to join as well, but you have to be able to handle coming in third place (which means getting out zerged by JQ and SoR).

I am looking forward to the rank gap growing between skirmish players and zerg players. That will be entertaining.

The GW2 engine may not be optimized all that well for 240 living people piling up on top of one another and interacting in a completely chaotic and exponential fashion, but I’m going to take a guess that if you just had a thousand bots, all identical, standing around doing nothing… that the game engine would render and handle it just fine because none of the actual CPU load would be present.
You are more or less mirroring what they’ve said on their Kickstarter. I am all for conspiracy theories, but CSE was very clear about what their tech demo was accomplishing and what it wasn’t accomplishing. Stating otherwise based only on a guess comparison between GW2’s engine and CU’s custom engine is indeed misleading.

I’m pretty sure Yishis could pull off stuff like that with any profession. Notice how much attention he gives to choosing his target, knowing where the enemy is, and when he’s in over his head. He’s way better then an average player and in his vids he’s commonly picking the easiest targets he can and working his way up. Notice how knows he can’t pull the stunts he pulls against seasoned players.
It creates a very skewed image when you pit a pro like that against a bunch of lowbies and call that an accurate scale of balance.
/agreed. Yishis is an extraordinary player on many levels, and I am lucky enough to play with him. No matter what he does with a thief, if he records it and puts it on youtube people are going to cry nerf.
How about people stop using Yishis’s videos as an example, and instead record their own experience on video? I bet there is a good answer for that…

Have you watched any of their videos or played when they do?

If this is your idea of PvDoor… how many people does the opposing team need?Simple solution. Put a cap on the number of non-NA players allowed on any one NA server based on a +/- percentage of the total number of non-NA players on NA servers with the objective of fairly balancing the the population of non-NA players across all the NA servers to make game play more competitive 7/24.
As I recall from playing friday, JQ was winning when NA prime ended. This ‘solution’ of yours wouldnt let you win anyway. so lol
Most of those they outnumbered their opponent/were fighting unorganized forces. I’m not saying FoO isn’t a good guild, but don’t try to get them as much credit as you do…besides, look what happened in JQ BL today during asian primetime
Or maybe its because Foo is too organized. When they push, they push, they don’t think twice about doing so.

For all the many, many threads from folks constantly complaining that WvW lacks this or that…..that it should have better drops….better unique rewards…granular “leader” boards…etc…..keep in mind that from the beginning (look back at the design notes, pre-launch marketing, etc) that Anet said that their aim for WvW was for it to be CASUAL focused….so that anyone could jump on, play for a short time and feel they were on level footing with everyone else while also doing their part to contribute. So if that is indeed still their mission statement and operating instructions for WvW, why then do you try to make it into something it will never be? You will never get “better” gear. You will never get uber WvW skills. Your reward is the fun you have while playing (as it should be).
Simply put….it is as alternative system they put in place to appease those who want PvP fighting on a grand scale but lack the time (or motivation) to really put into it on a competitive level (such as sPvP). The fact that there are many “hardcore” players who waste away several hours each day flipping this tower, taking that supply camp, sieging Hills/Bay/Gari wash, rinse and repeat for hours on end does not mean that Anet will ever change their initial intent and reward those who spend more time than others on the game.
Get over it and enjoy.
Yep. For those that can’t get over it, please pledge to Camelot Unchained. Thank you.

In regards to the effects:
“Now, where we’re going with things: Over the next week, I’ll be tweaking this some more and dropping in an effects system. A lot of people have been saying “but how will it go with effects???”, so we’ll answer that for you. We’ve got a really powerful design for the tech, heavily inspired by something the tech director on Wildstar showed me back in the days when we worked together at Troika. (The game industry is a very small place.) A little story on that — on one of the projects we had at the time, an artist came to me and said his level was running a little slow, and I found out that he’d accidentally spawned out five million invisible particles that were bouncing around forever. The fact that we could sustain that on 2002 hardware gives me great optimism for what we can do on modern hardware and taking advantage of GPU computing.”

That is such a misleading piece of crap.
The limitation in MMO’s is when you increase the number of participants, the amount of data needed to be calculated scales like crazy because everyone effects everyone else.
All that video shows is a bunch of bots walking around near each other, which represents minimal load to client and server because there isn’t much to calculate.
Yeah except it was demod again today with 1k toons, it’s not even optimized yet so it’s useing the same amount of triangles no matter how far away the toon is and it was still running smooth. It’s really just showing how well an engine can run when it’s built just for large scale conflict. So if anything this has nothing to do with GW2 since this game is in order a pve game with strong support for tpvp/spvp and lastly a wvw game.
Triangles put strain on the video card, and MMO’s are never video card bound.
The problem faced is CPU usage of client AND server, and that video isn’t doing anything that causes high CPU load. Hell, it’s not even doing anything that causes high video card with it’s shared textures and zero effects.
It’s absolute misleading bullkitten of the highest order.
True, they also mentioned this. Also, the textures aren’t shared, they are individually loaded. From the last CU update on kickstarter:
“When you can use DirectX 11 as a baseline (entirely reasonable for a 2015 launch), there’s a huge amount of work you can offload to the graphics card, and that’s a good thing for us. Right now, with 1000 characters, we’re hitting around 6% CPU load. That gives us all the room we need to do the kind of prediction, decoding, and lag compensation we’ll need to handle the networking for a ton of players and “real” projectiles in a very dynamic world. I’m looking forward to sharing — and maybe even playing — that with you!”

I am curious if the JQ or SoR communities are considering pledging to Camelot Unchained’s Kickstarter? If so, we should all go separate realms on the same server! >:)
An early pledge does net you a copy of the game for less than retail. To bad it’s going to be a long while before it comes out. Lucky for GW2 no market competition yet.
Yeah, $25 gets you the game, a free month, and access to the Beta 3. Yeah, it’s way early to talk about the game, but now is the time to get into the beta if you are interested.

Team Riot is a WvW focused Blackgate guild that is looking for a few good skirmish players. Our players come from a mixed background of DAoC (8v8), Warhammer (large scale open RvR/scenarios), and GW1. We offer a casual yet focused environment for those who want to work as a small strike team and win at WvW. This means that you commit as much time as you want, but when you are on the field we expect you to play as a team, and give your all to the fight. Maturity, communication, and a good attitude are a must!
As of this posting our PvP style is to be a small strike force that often focuses on camp/tower offense and defense, as well as a scouting party and assistance to the zerg. We like to skirmish and we like to win. If this is your play style, please contact us!
Voice chat is required (we are currently using Teamspeak). See you on the battlefield!
Please send a whisper to Trekdude, Boulderbolg, Merrillian, or Vessu Verra if you want to learn more.

As everyone has stated, the zergs are on every tier. However, the quantity and quality of small man groups differs a lot throughout the tiers. On T3/4 we were finding that we became the main zerg after prime time with just two groups! The pugs would start to follow us, and if we didn’t PvDoor our team would lose everything on a map.
The second problem that we experienced in T3/4 was that after prime time the competition really dwindled. We can easily take twice our numbers. This created a problem for us because it forced the enemy to either quit or bring more people. Our small skirmishing group became the reason the enemy zerged! So as evenings went on the small groups would either log off or they would ball up in a zerg to beat us. Either way wasn’t very much fun.
T1/2 doesn’t have these particular problems usually. The constant zerging allows small skirmish groups to do what they want. It’s actually quite nice as long as you can kite those massive zergs (which isn’t hard, and often entertaining). The more people in general on a map, the more chances of finding smaller groups, even with this game rewarding the zergs in every way possible. All we need is a little good luck in finding each other!
I do agree completely that there have been a lot less small groups since the patch.

I’ve been running this combo for a few weeks now as either a DPS or Hammer warrior in a small skirmish group, and I love it. I do almost always run with really good guardians in my group, but even still I don’t think I will go back to Lyssa. Condition builds are so fotm right now in WvW, and I love not worrying about them at all.
