One simple request regarding the Longbow...

Yes that is needed, but there are some other strange things regarding longbow. For example, why are the longbow traits in the boon-related trait line when their focus is conditions and aoe?

I have no idea man, lol. I find that silly as well but I figure it’s best to take baby steps with asking for a little love.

One simple request regarding the Longbow...

Braxxus.2904

Please please PLEASE for the love of all that is good:

Make longbow range 1200 by default.

I am dead serious. I am trying my hardest to love the longbow and make it work. I am also trying my best to squeak out every bit of viability I can running some condition love as a warrior using said longbow (and sword bleeds).

But the biggest annoyance about it all, more than the crappy damage or how easy the conditions are auto removed by most every class so very quickly, is that I have to spend 10 points JUST for the 1200 range in order to use it in W3 or match the rifle range in general.

If you replaced the 1200 range with 20% reduction in CD’s for the longbow like the other specializations that would be grand, but even if you don’t replace the trait with anything else as long as the 1200 range was default it would be much welcomed love to this poor weapon living in the shadow of the rifle (which in itself isn’t terribly “viable” from a competitive standpoint, but we’re trying to make do. Really we are).

Thanks.

Varyag

Warriors aren’t horrible at pvp – it’s just that there are far better options available that make most of the other classes more viable options.

Due to this the only point of yours which stands in my mind is #2 and even then you can make them work.

^
Even though I have a few less than happy feelings about some of the warrior traits, utilities and overall design I have to agree with Varyag here. The biggest issue is that other classes bring MORE. Warriors are capable and hell as much as I kitten about them I still play mine (because for the most part I MUST be a “warrior” main to be happy in any MMO, it’s a style thing
AoC gave me bear shaman which was a hammer warrior with auras and healing basically… man I wish shouts were better….”).

Defektive, though he and I debate a fair bit here, does provide valuable footage of a warrior doing well. I still maintain that you would do better on another class though Defektive, but I wholly understand the need to play that warrior.

To that end I will still hold out hope that ANet will do some adjustments to warriors to improve the gameplay of them without doing something drastic and kittening them up one way or the other (too buff, even weaker, etc). They have to see on the threads and from in-game data the biggest issues with the class such as the extremely small pool of “viable” utility skills to choose from. Frenzy and Stability, as Defektive mentioned, basically being must haves in order to really be viable. Lackluster self-sustainability with the shouts even though it still beats other options if you decide to stray from a frenzy build. The very lackluster longbow, shield cd’s even when traited, MH sword being a movement tool instead of a weapon, etc.

Warriors aren’t in the worst place in the world, but they sure could use a hug by the class devs.

Defektive

But GW2 is a team game

Well you should know that I’ve been pretty honest about my disdain for this concept as the excuse for poor class balance. So it’s one of those things where I have freely admitted my bias will factor into my views about it. IMO 1v1 balance is the only true balance worth a kitten and everything else is sub-par. Of course I started off gaming with FPSes back in the day (Go go duke3d on TEN and 14.4 dialup ftw) and pretty heavily competitive with Q2:RA (CTF and TDM) and Tribes in my youth as examples of how “team-based” PvP games can shine. 1v1 balance was always paramount in those and a single strong player, depending on skill, could solo teams for the comeback in some cases making for epic tide turns and replays.

TLDR
I do understand your argument I just disagree with it being a valid justification for issues, though I freely admit to heavy personal bias on this matter.

Had to move to the dark side to stay competitive

This has been, and still remains why I gripe about warrior design.

HOWEVER I have found the secret to actually having fun on my warrior:

I’ve stopped playing him in TPvP altogether. I have my 7 other alts for that, mainly fielding the ele or mesmer lately. Finally got my warrior to 80, got his exotics (except for accessories which are rare, working on that) and doing smaller scale and solo WvWvW with him….

As sword/shield + longbow.

And my warrior is actually fun again. Still have some issues with a few things about the class but at least I can play him with the weapon setup that I actually want to use and enjoy him for a change. The higher point spread customization outside the mists helps a lot with this actually as I can stack power and then minor in prec/tough/vitality/condi damage in order to keep him somewhat balanced (since warriors condition damage isn’t that reliable at all with how easily removed it is) in stats.

I’m not forced into some shouting stunlocker or GS herpaderper in order to feel competitive and viable and it makes a huge difference in actually enjoying the game instead of having every glaring issue and drawback of the class stare at you with piercing clarity like in TPvP.

On the other hand my ele and mesmer both tear kitten up in TPvP the more I’ve been running tourneys with them, the ele obviously having a much higher skillcap but also being far more engaging and fun imo. I am firmly convinced that the ele/engi design should have been the baseline for class mechanic design in GW2 with the attunement/kit swaps and whatnot.

Still promoting the idea of warriors having stance dancing as well.

if you’re not effective against Class A. Then inform your team so they can deal with Class A

This is, and has been, the worst “balance” design in gaming since forever. IMO.
“Oh, yeah these classes will stomp you, but it’s ok cause you’re good against these other ones…” Yuck.

Rock Paper Scissors is ok when you’re playing the actual game because you choose from the 3 on the fly. In games it’s complete kitten design because you are stuck with one role at a time.

Also: My mesmer is viable vs any class 1v1. My thief is also viable vs any class 1v1. My ele is actually also viable vs any class 1v1. Without switching utilities, without switching weapons and without switching their traits. Every class should be as viable.

I do agree with you. However I am firmly convinced that IF they do anything to ‘fix’ this issue, based off of how MMO devs have always done things regarding warrior classes in the past, that they will simply nerf the abilities you’re talking about rather than buff or redesign abilities to actually fix the issue.

How would you fix the warrior?

Braxxus.2904

I happen to have a warrior, on a competitive team

Sure you do. Where’s your stream. What’s your warrior tpvp win rating. You’re on TP, AC, etc? What’s your team name and how come no one has heard of your amazing warrior powers in the streaming circle?

The fact that you push sword bleed builds and longbows being viable really makes it hard to differentiate whether you’re trolling or just very very very absurdly wrong.

Edit:

I forgot there was only pvp in this game.

Nevermind just saw that you discredited yourself by basing your “points” on the parts of the game that have absolutely no bearing or meaning when it comes to balance issues.

PvE you can auto attack your way through the game successfully as long as you have your dodge key bound and use it appropriately.

In “follow the zerg” modes you can have 0 traits slotted and run with whatever ranged weapon you want and still get kills.

I don’t think I’ve met a person yet that was unhappy about their warrior in PvE. In W3 most of us can run around and have fun with the class (I think the better point spread helps here as well for stats.) In Zerg-mode pvp (SPvP) warriors can gank noobs. ANet balances around Tourney play because of the desire for ESport status so Tourney play is where balance discussions need to draw their examples from.

You’re not alone. At least on the forums a very large % of the warrior population on the boards feels very disappointed in warriors as a class. Sometimes it’s not so much performance as presentation because many people just don’t care about Tourneys or have flat given up on using a warrior for tourney play. I’m in the second camp. Anything a warrior can do in a tourney comp another class could do as well, and far far better.

Anyways like you I have a thing for the “warrior” class in every MMO (WoW was a prot warrior for 6 years, War I ran a chosen because it was the closest to stance dancing and SWToR I ran a knight because it was a prot warrior with a light saber).

I run sword and board + longbow currently because I like sword n’ board as a style. In PvE I can have fun on my warrior and feel like I contribute. In WvWvW I can roam around and feel like I’m not totally kittened. I would never ever EVER subject a team to my warriors presence in a tourney and drag them down. Especially with sword and board and even more especially with a longbow. It’s just pointless. So I bring something else in tourney play that actually deserves to be there as a class (usually my ele because of the stance dancing mechanic which I enjoy).

TLDR
Hang in there man. If you have to run tourneys I suggest finding a viable class to play since you don’t have to level it and keep your warrior for PvE and W3. At least until something is done to overhaul the warrior class for tourney viability.

In other news, even if you’re just asking a simple, reasonable question, don’t be surprised if you hear multiple “L2P” rants thrown your way. Seems to be the new way to show other gamerz that ur l33t.

Comedic sarcasm? Hmm. I saw sarcasm, but it came off more as passive aggressive whinging about poor thieves being picked on and warriors being OP more than “comedic”. I suppose it must have been in the same “comedic” vein as A. Dice Clay’s act.

Annnnyways, back on topic. Still curious about the OP’s success in tournament play vs organized teams, or if perhaps he avoids TPvP? I’m still not too sold on using the hammer for the CC-into-HB combo over the sword shield immobilize (or shield bash) in order to grab the extra mobility and missle reflect from the shield. (There’s also quite a bit of class balance adjustments in the patch, which always affects pvp. Just sayin’)

The fact that I don’t actively play a thief on my team doesn’t mean I don’t understand the class in some form or fashion. Just sayin.

I know, hence the mention of caution. Wasn’t discrediting you.

My point is, you will see the thief walking towards you at a node, or conversely you will see them as you walk into a node. They can’t perma stealth. The moment you see a thief (especially on a class that is vulnerable to them), you should be prepared to be bursted. It’s not unavoidable damage. At all.

You’re right. In a perfect vacuum it’s completely avoidable damage. But unless we’re talking about straight 1v1’s and dueling it’s a bit more ‘SURPRISE BUTTSECKS’ than that and I think you can admit that.

Again like I said though, my main point of contention with the thief is exactly how little effort needs to be applied for the reward. I play one for lulz and it IS funny to gib someone in what is pretty much 2 gcd’s (on any other class) but it is also mind numbingly simple to accomplish. Without the signet boost and mug it’s a little harder, but not by much.

The burst would be a bit easier for people to accept if it came after a session of classical piano being done on the keyboard first to set it up, but as long as it equates to smashing a watermelon with a mallet (the melon being your keyboard and the mallet being whatever body part you feel like using) to achieve the same effect it will be bad for the game overall.

Really… You can randomly smash your fist on your keyboard and kill people. Seems to me that just because of CD’s that a fair percentage of your “smashes” would register as invalid due to the ability not being ready yet.

The thief just unbinds everything but 1 and either 2 or 3 then makes a video of random keyboard smashing and collecting glory for it.

Seriously though if you can achieve this same success with other classes (not winning, but winning by literally smashing your keyboard randomly) in a video I’ll be somewhat impressed. I just seriously seriously doubt you can do the same thing.

The elementalist is all about chaining your abilities together effectively to give the most synergy and deal the most damage to your opponent, so it is important to not get stuck in a “rotation” and learn to use the skills when the time is right, while adapting to the situation (this comes with lots of practice).

^
This. Take this to heart. Also, I highly recommend getting out of spvp and doing tourneys. Even solo queue. Actually ESPECIALLY solo queue since you WILL go against premades and you will get your kitten smashed. However it will absolutely force you to up your game every time. Ignore the scoreboard. Play to win and as if you can win until the game announces that the match is over. Trial by fire so to speak.

Ele and engi as well depending on if you run kits, are amazingly deep classes. They really are how every class should have been modeled imo. The skill curve is a skill cliff once you get into tourney play, but the reward you can get from the two classes is worth it.

Also:
IMO, carry a staff, a scepter and two daggers with you at all times. You don’t need to re-trait to make use of the abilities for various roles on the field. Just a quick weapon swap can give you so much more versatility. Staff for bunkering, aoe support. Scepter dagger or dagger dagger for when you’re roaming to another area/taking someone 1v1 or 1v2.

Learn every ability from every weapon. It’s a lot compared to any other class, but it’ll pay off in the end as each one provides a different setup to deal with certain situations.
If ANet ever let us equip a 2nd weapon like the other classes to swap back and forth too I’d be sooooooo happy.

You know there's an issue when this is your first game of the day:

in PvP

Posted by: Braxxus.2904

Braxxus.2904

First of all, I don’t play a thief.

Then you should be very very cautious in entering discussions by doing extra research. Just sayin’

Secondly, stealth lasts for what, 3 seconds?

In an ideal world, however because of some issues with the game (and yes it happens in spvp/tpvp) the “fade in/out” can get spotty allowing people to appear to remain stealthed on the victims machine even though the thief is out of stealth and attacking. With proper re-stealth timing this can extend for 7-10 seconds in “best” case scenarios (for the thief).

This is provided that they use their heal to stealth so that you don’t see them coming in.

Or blinding powder. Or smoke combo field. The heal is usually the last thing we’ll use for stealth.

Then they steal, cloak and dagger (which stealths), and backstab.

Actually we pre-load cloak and dagger, THEN steal which occurs mid-animation and guarantees the cloak and dagger to hit. Or some of us simply stealth any time we steal (I run this option in my backstab build along with mug and applying blind on surrounding enemies every time I stealth to give me some more group utility)

So you’re telling me that this thief can traverse enough land in 3 seconds that you physically cannot see him coming?

Steal has a 900 range and heartseeker actually provides decent mobility (currently debatable as better than shortbow for efficiency). It is often possible.

As well we don’t really have any sort of telegraph that we’re about to steal. I’ve done it while running away from someone. They had no clue I was about to do it and land a free backstab/HS combo on them to turn the tide. Sometimes it’s just an instant hardswap. Helping the group, see someone drop below 75% and without any indication whatsoever selecting them and dropping 10-15k damage on their kitten (depending on signet CD) instantly.

Really the biggest issue with thieves and I still wager it’s at the core of why people get so mad at them, is the setup/skill required to do this compared to other classes. It’s about as brainless as it gets and it could be macro’d to the point it’s only 2 button presses to apply every cd and tag the target properly. The only reason it’s even 2 buttons is because of the possibility of nailing them from the front instead of the side or the back and having to take that hundredth of a second to reposition after the steal.

We STILL have yet to be able to have people create videos of any other class rolling into pvp (whether it be spvp or tourney play) and randomly smash their fist on the keyboard and collect kills. This can and has been done with the thief class and THAT is really where the problem lies imo.

I’m imagining this as Kobe Bryant saying" why do I have to put the ball in the basket all the time. This is boring"

Still a valid opinion. Opinion being the key word there.

"Ready" in Tournaments

Or you could just make it auto-ready when you enter the match since we have the option to wait in the mists until we’re ready.

I don’t think as many people “forget” to hit the ready button as you believe.

I know that I “forget” to when there’s one of those ADD whining aggro kids raging in chat about waiting for 10 seconds for a match to start. Sometimes when that occurs I “forget” to stop myself from clicking “I am not ready” to turn off the ready check and enjoy the timer countdown.

You know there's an issue when this is your first game of the day:

Merciless, I especially like the kill report on the right.
Thief kills mesmer.
Same thief kills ranger.
Warrior kills elementalist.
Again the same thief kills necro.

Hilarious. And that 10k backstab isn’t even close to the highest backstab I’ve seen. Just wish I had a picture to share.

lol! Nice. Didn’t even notice that till you pointed it out.

Funny thread Defective.

Maybe some players aren't cut out for PvP? (not about skill)

The ONLY part about pvp that to this day still pisses me off to no end:

The ability to play to the best of my capabilities and eat a loss because SOMEONE ELSE on my team performed badly.

When I personally kitten up, I don’t get frustrated/mad. I get determined to improve my game.

When some other person fails to perform or outright does something bad that costs us the win then I get kitten off to all hell and back.

So yeah what you said might apply to me a bit because the whole “it’s a team game” defense keeps sprouting up for why balance is out of whack across the board (most notably 1v1 between classes) and to me the inability to have an option to sustain myself in any situation or carry to a win like in an FPS will always drive me batkitten crazy.

Team modes are fun and all, however being FORCED to rely on other people sucks kitten.

Why are Warriors so underpowered in PvP in general?

Note: I’m talking about sPvP.

And note that I talk about, and specifically stated, TPvP. SPvP isn’t what the competitive portion of the game is balanced around and is little better than WvWvW.

Also you missed where I gave you the specific setup I run which is 2 traps, and entangle so your rant about only running 1 trap and being “forced” to spec 30 in a trait line for traps is a bit mis-placed. In most classes you have builds where running 30 in a trait line to buff some key parts of the class is fairly normal. Not sure why it’s such a burden or class failing if you do it on a ranger.

Lack of viable builds

Key Word is decency by the way. That’s what you lack, you just talk out of your kitten and say things that aren’t even true because its almost as if you do not have any manners in arguments. And when I mean manners, have experience before you talk.

Dude, really? In almost every thread you are the one that comes off as aggro, angsty and disrespectful to anyone who has an opposing opinion from the one you present.

Kettle/pot much?

Weapon Set Changing during tpvp - should it be allowed

in PvP

I dunno. I guess I just won’t understand how taking choices and variables away adds to tactical teamplay decisions.

All I see out of it is “Crap, my build is completely countered by this team which I had no way of knowing pre-game. Guess I’ll just take it up the pooper for 5-10 mins and eat the loss”.

Maybe it’s because I don’t have a team that is on as much as I am so once we get our matches in, I am solo queuing until the next time. Often hours and hours between days of solo queuing tourneys. For me, being completely stuck in a single weapon choice for 100% of the match (I don’t really ever swap amulets or traits much tbh, but it’s nice that it’s an option) would lead me to play many classes less. In fact it’d probably lead me to cease playing any class that couldn’t maintain consistant team support and 1v1 capability at all times without changing a single thing ever.

So my mesmer. And…. maybe my engineer or elementalist. But chances are just my mesmer.

Also unlike a good many players I’m sure, the more I’m not personally in control of the outcome of any given situation the less I like it. IRL and in-game. Hate it. With a passion. I do team games, because they are fun and all, but the more I feel like I can personally take care of every situation that comes up and the less I am forced to rely on other people the happier I am.

No matter how cool/skilled/coordinated they are, at the end of the day you can not rely on other people in my experience. At all. Even a little bit. Also failing to achieve something because somebody else kittened up is absolutely frustrating beyond all kitten. As long as I can blame the loss on my personal shortcomings the calmer I remain and can focus on improving.

Defektive

I believe in sPvP you can only barely break around 2100 toughness tops.

Um, ok here’s the deal. I goofed a little. /sheepish

Was thinking total “armor” stat rating when you said toughness instead of realizing you meant JUST the toughness stat. Soooooo

Misunderstanding on my part, lol. (1800 armor value is SQUUUUIIIIISH)

Aragiel

What im saying is that basically i won my personal fight the moment i saw the opponent running for it. Without this – the situation could be different.

So weapons equipped on class A vs weapons equipped on class B is such an overwhelmingly powerful decider of a fight that it determines victor that easily? And without this…. it’s somehow better? Wouldn’t that just mean it’s even less skill based and even more “Oh kitten, I’m on the wrong class with the wrong build. Why bother Instant loss”.

Sounds exciting.

Some classes btw never have to change weapons, or only do it for a very specific speed buff. Other classes run this speed buff perma without any real investment. For some classes the ability to weapon swap helps to make up for shortcomings in the balance of the game.

Sure, if ANet balances everything so 1v1 is across the board, every weapon is viable, every build is viable, every class has access to perma swiftness (or none do), then it might be a reduction in the skill level and complexity of the game I could swallow.

I just can’t for the life of me ever really support an idea that REMOVES a higher skill cap, removes complexity and promotes win/loss through pre-determined build based outcomes.

“Oh, it’s a frost mage vs a warrior. Instant win for mage, yawn.” No thanks.
