Have we as a community really mastered the game exploring every build and style in 3 and a half months?
Yes.
Dude, there’s not really that many traits, skills or weapons. Seriously. Combine them all together and it’s barely more than what most MMO’s have as an ability list for one class.
Yaks Bend
But yeah, don’t underestimate the adrenaline skills. They’re really not that bad… except for Eviscerate right now.
And arcing slice.
I don’t underestimate them, if you notice the build I force myself to run… even though it’s painful… the only thing I have going for my weapon choices are the adrenaline skills really. Sword skills are basically for movement and… well that’s it and longbow is longbow :P
Yaks Bend
Yeah well at least its not on 789..
lol, ok well I’ll give you that. :P
For the record I actually use healing surge already and take care of my condi removal with signet of stamina… mostly. But as Defektive said I practically use my F1 skills on cooldown with full 3 bar adrenaline anyways… when fast hands actually works.
@Defektive:
While you’re waiting you might as well join me in a drink or twenty.

Berserker Stance is bad. And I’m the troll :\
Yes berserker stance IS bad, so is wasting your heal purely to replicate it’s effects.
lol you kitten well know you are the troll.
Yaks Bend
I’m still trying to figure out what suddenly became viable.
He’s trolling you. That’s what he does. Check his post history. lol
If instant full adrenaline gain made a build viable it would have already been viable and running with any one of the other adrenaline building traits/utilities the warrior class has a plethora of.
Yaks Bend
Yay the patch finally arrived! Finally I won’t be pigeon holed into a shouting GS + x user in order to be viable!
…..
Oh. :’(
Well now I’m just so depressed I think I’ll skip logging in and starting at my warrior and go right to the drinking myself to a nice level of apathy before passing out….
Maybe next patch…
Yaks Bend
i cant express how much i hate game videos people try to turn into music videos instead of just letting the game sounds play…
That’s not my video, just a video of the build I am using on my engi. There are quite a few of us rolling around in WvW on yak’s bend on our engi’s with that build for a while now. I don’t particularly like the music but I do enjoy music when I’m watching gameplay videos so unless the person is narrating I generally mute them and continue listening to my pandora station/mp3 collection.
but you are rolling people with that engineer build. thats just silly, lol.
Omg man you have no idea. It’s fun as hell and just annihilates everyone 1v1 in moments. For sheer fun factor I still love shock trooper flame thrower but that requires at least 2 engi’s running that same build to really shine. This build is just beastmode though.
addendum I doubt it would work in tourney play but I’ve given up on tournament play and the whole “esport” meta which consists of 1 build per class viability with mandatory “roles” for teams being filled by specific classes while the rest eat crow… just like what’s been wrong in every other mmo that’s tried to do competitive pvp. WvW is far more forgiving about letting you play with at least a small variety of builds and not feeling the effects of being completely sub-par.
Yaks Bend
Based on the upcoming patch:
I have a feeling that with burst builds taking a hit, and bunker builds becoming less bunkery. This build will be well suited for tournament pvp, especially the DPS variant.
I’m so hoping the patch has this effect on the meta. I’d love to play my sword + longbow build and not have it be completely mathematically sub-par in every way to just running with a GS and frenzy.
Yaks Bend
You have to be aware of everything: incoming killshot….incoming barrage…incoming big ’ol bomb…dodge that kittening spirit hammer before it send you flying….dodge that thief rotation unless you like your respawn point that much….dodge that shatter combo unless you love purple and butterflies that much.
I need more energy. I get 2 dodges before energy is drained. Apparently we need a minimum of 6.
Also people enjoy the combat MECHANICS, it’s the game mode and balance issues that bug the kitten out of people.
Yaks Bend
Right now, Warriors have the highest ranged burst in the game. Period.
Rollin’ that ^ on my engineer right now in WvW and shredding everyone 1v1 as a ranged class. Best part is there’s no huge wind up of a visual “tell” that i’m about to throw a truck load of death their way.
Honestly though I’d be totally fine if they nerfed rifle, hammer and greatsword since they’re the only viable specs atm as long as they buff MH sword, shield, longbow, mace, adrenaline use opposed to hording it for passive buffs, etc. You know, all the crap that is pretty much complete kitten currently.
Yaks Bend
(edited by Braxxus.2904)
Not debuffed in any way and WHAM 15845 kill shot.
Really.
REALLY!
Oh my….
Yeah I know man. It’s crazy how those kittens can go invisible, teleport to your location and instantly hit you for that much.
Oh my bad, I forgot that you were talking about the ability which remains visible while using a crazy long animation where the character’s telegraphed stance practically hand delivers you an engraved letter telling you when to dodge.
Yaks Bend
CD’s are definately too long for what the abilities do. I’ve “whined” about it before (cause I know many people will call it that so might as well get it out of the way).
After trying out the other classes I can’t help but think of the shield for warriors as another example of the class being left in “vanilla” mode while the other classes got improved versions of the same ideas. Shield 4 is ok but shield 5 is completely lackluster UNLESS traited for projectile reflection (which is bullkitten). CD’s are still too long for their vanilla nature.
-Guardian
Shield of Judgment ½ 30 Create a shielding wave in front of you that damages foes and gives protection to yourself and up to five allies.
~Compared to warrior shield 4 it’s almost even, except providing 33% damage mitigation to up to 6 people is arguably better in most situations beyond 1v1’s than the daze.
Shield of Absorption 1½ 40 Create a dome around you that pushes foes back and absorbs projectiles.
~ Aoe knockback, Bubble of protection and an aoe heal as long as you remember to detonate it right before it expires.
-Engineer
Magnetic Shield 3 30 Create a magnetic field that reflects projectiles and can be released to push back foes.
Magnetic Inversion Release the magnetic field to push back nearby foes.
~Projectile reflection standard and an AOE knockback as long as you remember to detonate it before it expires. Variable usage and utility.
Static Shield 1½ 40 Electrify your shield, preparing to throw it at foes. If you are hit, the shield discharges, stunning your nearby attacker.
Throw Shield ¾ Throw your charged shield. Dazes foes it hits on the way out and back.
~Reactive block which stuns the attacking player, OR can be used as a ranged attack which interrupts/dazes the enemy. Again dual usage and utility.
But wait, the CD’s are longer right? Yeah but they also get more value out of the 20% cd reduction trait, they also don’t have to have an extra and arbitrary trait spent in order to give it full basic functionality (warrior missle reflect… should be standard.)
25s cd – 20.8s after trait (4.2s gain)
30s cd – 25s after trait (5s gain)
40s cd – 33.3s after trait (6.7s gain)
etc
TLDR-
CD reduction (and even trade-off with shield 5 duration for stance) is a very fair change to the warrior shield skills imo for how vanilla they are.
off-topic: I actually have similar gripes about the warrior sword MH vs other classes sword MH abilities. War’s abilities are just “meh” while everyone else got actual use out of theirs beyond a travel-weapon and maybe an immobilize to swap to your real weapon (GS)
Yaks Bend
(edited by Braxxus.2904)
When two warriors can come even remotely close to doing this then you can maybe say a little something:
…
Well that seals it. Been getting so frustrated on my war trying to make sword MH + longbow be viable enough to not feel weak compared to rifle, GS or hammer that I was debating whether or not to replace my “melee” guy with a thief. You just sealed the deal for me, guess my thief will finally see past level 2 and pubstomping in spvp.
“I’m sorry War, I want to love you I really do. You’re nice and all, but there are so many other classes out there who are successful and who do all the things you said you would try to do but did kitten. I’ll always love you but I have to move on to someone who can really excel and not just coast along as average.” ~ cue sappy string music and rainy night background.

ofc it is a teamplay game
Always a terrible terrible cop out response to balance issues where one class is much stronger than other classes in 1v1’s.
If it takes 2 ‘other’ classes to deal with 1 of ‘x’ class then ‘x’ class is broken and needs to be shot with the nerfballista.
Yaks Bend
because I dont play tournaments,
Well at least you were honest upfront and early about why you support such a bad build.
With the multitude of build types
See the thing is, there aren’t a multitude of build types. If you’re playing competitively, because of the way the game is balanced atm and with the gametype promoting the meta it does, there are only a few viable builds for each class. For some classes there’s really only 1 type of build with a subtle variation here or there.
First thing, in true competitive PvP, for warriors at least stability is a must have. Arguably frenzy is a must have as well, but stability is just the very first thing that should go on your bar. There’s room for one physical skill but all three is just an exercise in self kittenage.

banner warrior
HAHAH! omg
Wow, thanks for that. Always good to start the morning off with a good laugh.
I especially enjoyed how you finished by saying that warriors are good because they make guardians even better! Yay! That’s what every warrior wants to do, play second fiddle sidekick to the paladins that are already like improved warriors 2.0.
Yaks Bend
You are incorrect to assume this.
^
This.
Take your best “tank” warrior setup and I’ll still take a guardian any day for sheer tankability. Also, shout heals scales terribly. Banner regen is ok as long as noone else in the group gives regen (kind of like warrior bleeds that way).
I’d even venture to say against mobs that aren’t immune to CC my engi can probably out tank any warrior with the proper spec/gearing.

Otherwise, you may walk away with the realization that you just spent multiple hours playing a video game when the vast Earth exists for your exploration. A good game makes you forget about that silly Earth.

Indeed! Which is why you should watch this guys pro streams/vids of his top tier tournament play owning everyone on his warrior…..
Oh, wait
Yaks Bend
Well…
Because of the format, the class imbalance leading to a stacked and stagnant meta, the viability of only 1-2 builds (in some cases the most boring ones) limiting variety, missing tools for the e-sporter wannabes and issues in the majority of gameplay (non-top 1% of players doing pick up tourneys and 8v8s) this should be pretty expected. It’ll improve, but gamers are fickle and prone to move on asap for greener pastures (whether real or perceived) after a period of unsatisfactory gameplay.
I love the idea of tourneys and competitive play if it had more variety of acceptable comps and builds that were viable for more classes, and a game design that didn’t facilitate a predictable and stagnant meta formation.
That said, W3 is actually pretty fun despite it’s own issues (culling/rendering and such. nerf thieves
) AND actually allows people to play a build/class that they enjoy and have fun with rather than stacking the same class/build comps to eek out the most min/maxed setup possible for a small area node control design.
Yaks Bend
Unfortunately@ Braxxus: Moral of the story: fix the kitten rendering/culling issues already

Oh, I like!
ORRRRRRRRR ANet could just give us freaking stance dancing for our F2-F4 key slots. It’s a fun mechanic, it’s a high skill-cap mechanic and there have been many successful implementations of it.
WoW – Stance dancing
AoC – Guardian stance dancing, Bear Shaman aura molding
WAR – Chosen Aura Molding
GW2 – Ele attunement swapping
etc
But I do like your suggestion as well and would support it if ANet decided to go that way so +1!

This is what I have been running with the past 48 hours. Before that I was running with 20 in defense for the shield trait and only 10 in the bottom trees for the signet recharge and longbow range respectively.
I also have an offhand sword, but figured I’d give the warhorn offhand a real honest try to see how it works… but it’s so bloody STUPID LOOKING imo even if it is a necessary weapon swap for every warrior for swiftness. Seriously… fighting with a warhorn in your offhand instead of a shield, or other weapon… or just having that hand free to grapple… so dumb.
Interesting bug perhaps but I started with a second sigil of doom on my longbow to keep poison up 100% with the weapon swaps (when fast hands actually works) however it does not appear to proc off the longbow. At all.
Procs off the warhorn though so…. gonna test further then make a bug report to see what ANet has to say about the sigil not working with longbow.
Still not happy with the tactics tree though… I’d much rather have those points in defense, or even strength but oh well… Maybe if ANet ever un-kittens the longbow.

Haven’t seen anyone on the server or forums talking about teaming up to pick on either opponent. It’s just what it is, a grab for map control where each server can get it.
Yaks Bend
I have to agree with the majority here. I don’t like your viewpoint at all. #5 has some merit, but the rest I disagree with vehemently.
BTW I do mainly small scale and solo pvp in W3. If you want small scale and solo pvp, go looking for it. Nothing is stopping you and yes, there are plenty of other players doing the same out there.
I like the core of W3 right now. Only thing that I would like to change is perhaps a badge increase for smaller scale combat but oh well. The nice thing about W3 now is that when I choose to go large scale I can go join a group and help take one of the larger objectives. When I want to remain smaller scale but contribute to my server I can go take supply camps and hit their supply lines.
Those may not seem as impressive but believe me the “zergs” do tend to take note and are actually pretty appreciative of those contributions. It’s nice to get that random shout-out by your server mates in map chat giving you kudos for recapping a supply point for their siege group to utilize during a heated push.
Yaks Bend
Hopefully remove the teleport and instead allow the mug trait to steal gems from the player.
Heh, I know you’re being sarcastic but if ANet were ever so stupid as to do something like this they could kiss the gem store goodbye along with any cash they’re bringing in from it. Who in their right mind would drop RL money just to have a keyboard slammer class capable of taking it away from you. It’d be like someone playing eddie gordo stealing quarters from your pocket at the arcade everytime he managed to hit you while randomly button mashing.
RickshawYou want a signet build? I gave you one.
Signet build is crap. It fails at being even remotely viable in competitive play.
Shield, awesome.
Meh. Good situationally as a weapon to swap to for a second.
Warhorn, clutch. Sword, awesome.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg you must be joking or trolling. Or both. There’s no way you said these two were awesome in regards to competitive tourney play. Shenanigans.
Yaks Bend
(edited by Braxxus.2904)
Problem is, people usually expect themselves to put a shield on and auto win.
…
In what kitten game has this ever been the case?
Most every MMO treats a shield as “Oh, ok I suppose you can tank now mr. warrior but the tradeoff is you will be complete kitten in PvP with damage that drops below that of a typical mob around your level”.
I mean, prot warrior was complete garbage with a shield up until mid wotlk, then it was viable a few of us got gladiator with our shields, everyone cried, it got nerfed back down to “meh” status once again (I quit playing pre-cata so won’t comment on anything that might have changed since then).
AoC shield guardians were garbage in pvp. Forever. Go polearm or go home.
WAR chosen were… ok with a shield at best, better with a 2-hander though and proper aura molding.
Then there’s other niche pvp mmo’s like DarkFail where shields were the most crappy piece of crap to have ever crapped crap before.
I mean I always love to be a sword n’ board warrior type, aesthetically it pleases me. However shields are almost always treated in a rather kitten self-kittening manner only to be used for meat shielding in pve. Never mind the fact that the reality is that shields are just as much an offensive weapon as a defensive tool.
Shields here, when traited, are ok. CD’s still seem a bit too long when traited though.

If fast hands did actually work as intended, wouldn’t a sigil of doom on both weapon sets be good?
You get a high uptime on poison with constant switching, giving all the benefits of poison while also providing an additional cover condition for your bleeds/burns.
Thoughts?
It very well could be actually. Of course that’s providing that fast hands doesn’t bug out every other moment, lol.
Hell I may give it a shot anyways and let you know how it works out.
Yaks Bend
If you TRULY believe it takes less skill as a thief in comparison to the aforementioned combos…
There’s only one class that has multiple videos of people quite literally random smashing their keyboard and getting kills on other players in PvP. I wonder which class that is….
Could be the one that only class capable of this is setting a new high of most braindead MMO class design ever, and we’re not talking about top tier tourney play vs highly coordinated teams but just in general play which is where the majority of pvp occurs. Yes, the top 1% deal with thieves fine that’s true. Most of that top 1% have still commented on how stupid easy the class/spec is at the same time. Also the top 1% is not the only factor in maintaining a pvp player base no matter how much they like to think so.
For the record if you have a mouse or keyboard with the functionality built in you can reduce the thief to 1 button via macro for complete backstab burst ability chain and then bind this macro key to every key on your keyboard and then smash it even more randomly while watching tv. I like ANet and think they show great care with their community that far exceeds other MMOs. I also think they designed the most stupid easy “invisible ganker” thief/rogue/assassin class in an MMO in a long long time.
Yaks Bend
1) Bleed damage has nothing to do with adrenaline, you just get less stacks because less adrenaline = less hits.
Actually the adrenaline level used with flurry only affects the duration of the immobilize. The 8 strikes and bleed damage per strike remain constant regardless.
Yaks Bend
The reason I went away from gearing to increase burning duration is that it’s only 2s base. Going all out we really at best only gain about a second… just felt like I was investing WAY too much for far too little return.
I don’t have access to fast hands and mobile strikes… this bugs me more than I can express, but the only options I have to drop a few points to get it are:
Furious – Which kittens my adrenaline regen which unlike the cookie cutter builds we’re totally reliant on. Really we want to be dumping our adrenaline abilities as often as we can so…. weapon swapping could help with this though preferably I’d have both tbh.
Attack of opportunity: 10% extra damage to bleeding targets… yeah, possibly the best trait we have from a synergistic viewpoint so that seems terrible to drop.
Shield specialization: Could care less about the bonus toughness tbh when compared to the idea of having untraited shield cooldowns… which are horrible. Shield becomes fairly useless compared to other off-hand options without the trait and it’s only on par with them barely when traited.
Health regen from adrenaline: This we could drop tbh since we dump adren constantly, unfortunately means we drop the shield trait as well.
Or longbow increased range, which kittens us when ranged fights happen. Might as well go rifle at that point.
Longbow had a natural 1200 range this would be a non-issue.
So do we drop the shield altogether and go dual sword? This would let us grab both weapon swapping and mobile strikes. There would be no point to getting the 10 in defense at all in that case and could either grab Burning Arrows or Adrenal Reserves/Burst master for instance… I’ve been debating this a lot lately in fact.
My utilities are what they are because no matter what build I experiment with in PvP I find that stability is a must have. I think Defektive would probably agree with me on this one.
Bulls charge I grabbed because of the extra mobility it provides (the CC is nice too of course) but since we have downtime instead of perma swiftness, and only have our leap as a movement increase compared to greatsword (which will spoil you on how much more mobile it is) I just find bulls to be awesome all around.
Again the signet of stamina is because condi removal is a weak area and if you don’t have perma vigor like just about every other class you’re at a HUUUUUGE disadvantage so….
Another issue is the gearing. I went with this stat spread because it gave me power as a strong main focus, with solid numbers in prec, condi, tough and vitality. It’s one of the things that TPvP points out to me about many builds:
You simply can’t get the point spread you need for many builds to work at a decent level.
Yaks Bend
So…
First off, I wish you the best of luck.
I have been running and tweaking my warrior for sword/x + longbow as a condi warrior as well. The most important thing to get out of the way is:
I do not play him in TPvP any more. Just not worth the heartache from how poorly compared to the other classes he performs there unless running very specific standard builds (GS, MAYYYYYBE hammer), but that’s been discussed more than enough in other threads so I digress…
Anyways, in PvE it works awesome and I have no complaints. Though i could say that about a “blank” build with any weapon for pretty much any class and roll through PvE just fine so that leaves W3. I run in W3 probably 80% of my time any more.
For reference the build I’ve been running most recently has been:
0
30 (III, V, XI)
20 (V, IX)
10 (IV)
10 (VI)
Sword/Shield + Longbow (earth/rage/earth respectively)
Armor is dungeon toughness/power/vitality and accessories are rampager’s gems.
Runes currently are nightmare but I intend to get a full set of melandru because more condi/CC protection is sorely needed.
Mending
Bulls Charge
Stability
Signet of Stamina
Signet of Rage
I’m not all that happy with parts of it but it’s born out of necessity from what I’ve found during play in 1v1’s, 1v2’s, group play, defense, offense, roaming, and everything in-between in PvP.
The reason I took the vunerability on crit is because it’s a dps increase for not only myself but every teammate that strikes the affected target as well. The 50% bleed duration I’m still not sold on because every other class seems to either auto remove conditions every few seconds or have enough condi wipes that getting a full 12-15 second duration just doesn’t seem very likely except for PvE.
I find that the 10% dps increase on bleeding targets is the most solid dps increase boost we have. Furious I took because we use adrenaline like it’s crack. Flurry I try to use with only 1 pip of adrenaline unless I need a longer immobilize as the damage stays the same regardless of adrenaline usage. The extra adrenaline on crit helps me to build up to 2 more pips before switching to longbow, where the Disc 5 trait will bump it up to a full 3 pips for combustion shot.
The shield imo is crap unless you trait for it, and then cd’s become “ok” enough to use. Reflecting missles is a tossup really, turtle’s defense would be solid as well and if you have time to swap it out for each other depending on the class you’re about to fight that’s probably best.
This is one of the biggest points of irritation for me: I took the stronger bowstrings trait only because I HAVE to in order to have a proper range on my bow. When you’re fighting a large force and everyone is squaring off being the only pleb standing at 900 range instead of 1200 like everyone else… well, it ends badly.
The reason I grab the signet CD reduction is because other than using a kitten warhorn ( : / Running around IN COMBAT with a warhorn in your offhand just looks dumb imo… it’s effects are ok and all, but it looks stupid to me) signet of stamina is my only way of getting energy regen slightly comparable to every other class who almost all have perma vigor. The active effect for full condi removal is something I sorely need as unless running a shout/soldier rune build we really lack in that department overall. This is also the reason I think i’ll switch to melandru runes.
Signet of Stamina because it’s the only one really worth using and it gives me access to swiftness.

Wow there are a lot of players on this forum who don’t have teams. I wonder what would happen if they started talking to each other.
They wouldn’t get along due to personality conflicts I’m guessing.
I have 2 people I play with on VoiP consistantly because in searching for other members to form a team I have only found narcissistic raging kids determined to disrespect and insult every other person in the game which I have neither the time nor the patience to deal with for the sake of a game nor really any other facet of life. 3v3 arenas would be awesome, but that’s another matter.
I’m sure there’s plenty of chill adults out there playing, but I’d wager most of them are already in longstanding guilds or have decided to avoid the cesspool of kitten as well.
Yaks Bend
MonkiI think the Bow has unique power not many people know about= Groupmight.
I’m pretty sure everyone that has PvP’d more than once in this game knows that fire field+burst finishers give aoe might….
Nice “secret” though. For the record my Ele does the same thing while laying down heavy damage at the same time.
Justification of the issues with longbow by saying “but guys, you can BUFF people!” is pretty sad imo. Sad that it’s so underpowered a person would grasp at something so small to try and give the weapon a purpose.
If the bow’s main purpose were indeed supposed to be applying aoe might every now and then, instead of aoe damage and condition damage through burning…. well, that’d just be insulting.
But now we’ve gone off on a tangent when the point was to ask for a default range of 1200 instead of the 900 it currently has without being forced to spec into it. There are other issues with the longbow for sure, but this is specifically addressing the range.
Yaks Bend
Gonna go ahead and add my voice to the choir of praises towards our opponents on CD and DH. Been having a blast and in a way I’m almost thankful for the Halloween event taking some of the numbers out of the match. I mostly do a lot of supply camp ninja capping and small group roaming and it’s actually been pretty fun finding other solo artists and small groups doing the same instead of mini zergs everywhere (minus when CD is on en-masse

The back and forth at RB tonight on YBBL was fun as well. Fought DH forces there for almost 2 hours back and forth. Cheers all!
Yaks Bend
I know Serval, and that’s great and all but…
I really only take the trait to get 1200 range.
I mean, if the trait was in the first tier of the arms tree (the cond damage/crit% tree) then it might be a bit easier to budget into a build (hell I might actually debate dropping +50% bleed duration for that since most classes auto-cleanse themselves every few seconds anyways).
As is though I only want the extra range so I’m not the only kitten standing at 900m in W3 while every other player is at 1200-1500 plinking away at each other during ranged volleys (meaning I’ll get dropped before my 2nd auto attack fires).
I suppose the easy solution would be to go for rifle…
But then I would lose half of the purpose of trying to force a condi warrior into being viable…. which means I’d be better off with axe/warhorn or greatsword for my melee weapon. Hell even hammer at that point.
I’m rambling, apologies.
TLDR
ANet. Baseline 1200 range? Change stronger bowstrings to continue to give combo finishers to arrow attacks + 20% CD reduction like other weapon specs? I’ll buy more gems…. shameless bribe XD

YezhikIn paid tournies it makes the most sense to just make all asura, just because of that animation advantage.
Indeed. The funny thing is that many people mentioned this about ranked tournies being fielded by all asura (look at the most popular race choice of all the ‘pro’ streamers currently) simply because you take every advantage you can, no matter how slight. With the game based off of visual cues, just as in every other PvP game unless there’s a reach difference, the smaller race is the pvp’ers race. Better for hiding in terrain, getting lost in the zerg/chaos of battle and of course harder to see animations.
For the esport aspect it’s probably best, especially since you already have forced red/blue coloring on everyone, to force a single size to eliminate any visual cue advantage to be had.
