Loving Revenant this beta.

Currently set-up in full zerk with a staff/dual sword combo and the variety and weapon styles feel awesome. Weapon swap has really made all the difference.

Anyway, thought I’d open up a “Have you tried…?” thread for people to share little tricks/hints that open up some delicious gameplay.

Have you tried using Phase Traversal (Shiro utility 2) to step to an enemy then immediately using Staff skill 5? Some fantastic damage output + CC particularly in a zerk set-up.

I don’t care who “NoctuneZ” or “ROM” are, we want Heart of Thorns specialization updates. We’ve got a few Elite specializations now, how is it fair to keep the rest hanging? What does Warrior become? What does Thief become? What skills do Druids get? Do Engineers get exploding hammers??

Just had a look at the Tempest and christ does that look like a boring kitten effort by Anet lmao… I’ve been poised ready to insta-80 an ele based on its elite spec, but not going to bother now.

On the other hand, I’ve always mained a Ranger so if it turns out Druid is just as sucky then I guess I won’t be the one with the last laugh :’)

Outclassed: Other classes can do what the Revenant does in an easier and more effective way.

Especially this.

I got sick pretty quickly of how slowly the Revenant’s skills flow between each other. Couple this with having to put lots of thought into setting up your offense, then getting underwhelming output for your effort, I gave up after 2 hours. I hopped straight on my Ele to farm Orr for a while and the difference was staggering. Ele does everything Rev does but better, more quickly and more efficiently. Better Burst, consistent physical damage, better mobility, better and more heals, and the flow between the Ele’s skills is so much more logical, easy and satisfying.

If ArenaNet had just said “this is the revised offer: vets get free slot with pre-purchase”, and not added the misleading, disingenuous BS about “veteran loyalty” then I wouldn’t have made this thread.

Even without saying the words “veteran loyalty”, veteran loyalty is implied by your suggestion of them saying “this is the revised offer: vets get free slot with pre-purchase”.

A reward for vets is a reward for veterans who remain loyal to the game by prepurchasing.

I think you’re just caught up on the wording. They made this new offer in response to large outcry from veterans about not getting a reward for their loyalty.

By bringing up “veteran loyalty” in their community address they’re saying, hey yeah you’re right we’re gonna give you something for being loyal customers and sticking with the game for so long.

Just coming out and saying, “oh yeah, so we revised the offer and current accounts can get an extra slot” could just as easily come across as a quick shushing of the complainers. “Here take your character slot and move on, thanks.”

Any kind of statement they make could be interpreted a few different ways. Both good and bad.

So in that case they’re only rewarding those who pass their new loyalty-test, which is the pre-purchasing of HoT? All the loyalty (gem purchases over 3 years etc) counts for nothing unless veterans pre-purchase now? What if some vets aren’t in a financial position to pre-purchase, but have remained loyal to the game through continued play and gem-store purchases over the last 3 years? Should they not be entitled to the free character slot too?

Loyalty is, by nature, past-tense. It is what you have previously done to remain loyal to the company. Therefore, a reward for loyalty, which is what ArenaNet have claimed they are offering, should by definition be a reward for those 3 years’ worth of loyalty, and not by a new test in the form of a pre-purchase.

I read your OP. You seem to think that treating customers well is somehow wrong if paired with bringing in more profit.

Why do you think it’s wrong that they want veteran players to pre-purchase the game? You’re right it’s just a revised offer, but the purpose of the revised offer is to maintain “veteran loyalty”. a.k.a. keep the customers they have so they will keep spending money on the game.

What you seem to be doing is calling out a business for wanting more customers and not wanting to lose the customers it has. If they make a bad marketing choice and change it to a wise marketing choice I don’t understand how that’s disingenuous.

What is wrong with wanting to get veterans to want to purchase the expansion?

Nothing is wrong with wanting to get veterans to want to purchase this expansion.

I’ll repeat myself.

What is wrong is disguising this effort as a reward for “veteran loyalty”.

No pre-purchase = no character slot. This is not “veteran loyalty” = disingenuous.

If ArenaNet had just said “this is the revised offer: vets get free slot with pre-purchase”, and not added the misleading, disingenuous BS about “veteran loyalty” then I wouldn’t have made this thread.

Do you understand now?

Edit: just to try and make it as simple as possible for you to understand:

Anet marketing to push pre-purchase = FINE, it’s their right

Anet pretending this marketing is a reward for “veteran loyalty” = NOT FINE. It’s lying.

If Anet had done what they’ve done without saying “as appreciation for your loyalty” = this would have been FINE.

ANet gives the patron consumers what they’re asking for and all the sudden it’s a conspiracy that ANet, a business, expects to generate more sales by making this offer?

Did the OP not know that capitalism was a thing?

Did you not know that actually reading the OP was a thing?

I’m not bashing ArenaNet for marketing their game to make money. They’re an organisation designed to make profit and have every right to do so.

I’m bashing them for the way in which they have gone about this. As I stated in the OP, which I realise you have not read, they have disguised their efforts to entice veterans to still pre-purchase the game (i.e. protecting their profits) as “veteran loyalty appreciation”.

Why do they have to be so disingenuous about it? Why not just say: “this is our revised offer.” No BS about “veteran loyalty”. Veterans do not get the free character slot if they don’t pre-purchase. Therefore, it is not a loyalty reward – if it was, then veterans would get the free slot whether they pre-purchased or not.

Oh, we get what you’re saying. We’re just not sure what part of it is “misleading”. They are telling us exactly what’s up: loyalty slot with preorders only. We understand that. Just as we understand your own point. The question is, you said Arenanet is misleading us: so tell us where.

It’s right there on community address:

“Veteran Player Appreciation

For our long-standing fans and loyal players, we would like to say thank you and show our appreciation. "

This is misleading because it’s not appreciation of veteran players. Veteran players do NOT get the additional character slot if they buy HoT after it comes out.

Like I said in my original post, it’s Anet’s way of disguising a protection of their income (i.e. payments from the veteran playerbase) as appreciation of veterans. It is misleading.

With regard to the character slot addition – they’ve only done what they should have done in the first place. This whole issue has just persuaded me to get off GW2 and focus on real-life improvements for a while.

I can’t see how this is misleading? It’s quite clear. Pre-purchase the expansion, get the slot if you’re a veteran. It has nothing to do with “loyalty” and everything to do with giving people an incentive to pre-purchase.

If people are worried about content (I still am) they will be able to pre-purchase all the way up to shortly before launch (I probably will) and still get this offer. Either way, you don’t have to buy now, that said, you’re always taking a gamble on MMO expansions kitten much of the value is delivered after release.

If it has nothing to do with veteran loyalty then why have ArenaNet just added a free character slot on pre-purchase for those who have been playing since before January 23rd? The angry response has everything to do with veteran loyalty and the lack of recognition thereof.

Bryzy.2719

EDIT FOR CLARITY: A lot of you are misunderstanding my point. Let me be clear: I am not against Anet marketing their pre-purchasing scheme. They are a for-profit company, and have every right to market their game as much as possible. I AM however against them saying that the free character slot is a “loyalty reward”. It is not a reward for loyalty since you can ONLY get it if you pre-purchase. No pre-purchase = no reward = nothing to do with loyalty.

The pertinent question to ask is:

Why don’t veterans get a free character slot if they don’t pre-purchase HoT?

The answer is because the free character slot is not a loyalty bonus for veterans. It’s a way for ArenaNet to ensure they’re not losing money from that playerbase.

If you’re a veteran player who has supported the game since day 1 but is not in a position to pre-purchase HoT, well then looks like you’re not loyal enough for the free character slot!

In their community address, Anet state:

“Veteran Player Appreciation

For our long-standing fans and loyal players, we would like to say thank you and show our appreciation. "

This is misleading because it’s not appreciation of veteran players. Veteran players do NOT get the additional character slot if they buy HoT AFTER it comes out.

This is ArenaNet’s way of disguising a protection of their income (i.e. payments from the veteran playerbase) as appreciation of veterans. It is misleading.

I wouldn’t have posted this thread if Anet had simply stated what they were going to do in response to the community outcry, and not employed their sly marketing team to disguise it as playerbase loyalty: i.e. "In response to the community complaints, we are adding an additional character slot for “veteran” pre-purchasers". Just leave it at that. What they HAVE done is just disingenuous and discredits the company’s image.

Weighing in with my 2 cents, if they’re worth anything. Bear in mind I don’t even have a Guardian and will never play one.

- I don’t like the name

- The story that the Devs have given behind the name is too obscure for players who haven’t already read into it to figure out, and particularly new players

- Every player in the game regardless of profession is, or has been, a dragonhunter

- I’m left wondering why, out of a list of a dozen other suitable names (like Tempest, Paragon, Divine, Bulwark) that fit the theme, the Devs had to choose one so unnecessarily obscure.

Exactly. Map chat is not your personal space. That includes for praising God. Religious people have the right to be offended, so I have the right to be offended when someone questions my lack of belief.

you have the right to be offended. But that’s about it. Everyone can ignore how you feel freely. Like I said before, unless it’s against the rules, you can’t stop others from using free speech. Some people would be offended if the conversation went to eating meat. Some people would be offended if politics, vaccinations, childcare, etc entered the chat. However they’re all valid topics. So yeah. You have the right to stay offended, but that’s about it.

So why is it I get a warning for discussing the non-existence of God and criticising religion yet religious gamers get no warnings for praising God? Like you said, I have freedom of speech and right to express my opinion – so why is Atheistic discussion punishable and religious discussion isn’t?

Over time I’ve seen people discussing God/Allah in chat as though he exists. As an Atheist, I find this offensive, just as a Christian or a Muslim would find it offensive if I talked about his lack of existence. Yet these people don’t get warned. I have previously received angry whispers from some players for talking openly about Atheism in Say chat (which I have since learned from an no longer bring any kind of cultural views into chat).

A lot of you are missing the point. Especially the person that said this:

“Are you serious about this? As in, are you asking for people not to discuss stuff in mapchat because you are offended by opinions?”

By that same logic I could discuss disliking a particular race of people, because that’s my opinion. That opinion would be very offensive, but by what you’re saying I should be allowed to express that without consequences.

What I am saying is that religious discussion about God and the appraisal thereof should be prohibited if my open criticism of religion in chat is prohibited.

As the posters in this thread have proven, any kind of real-world religious discussion sparks a LOT of debate; debate which can’t lead anywhere good. As such, ALL religious discussion in game chat should be prohibited, regardless of whether its someone praising God or dismissing him as non-existent.

The trinity

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Bryzy.2719

I sometimes get fed up with all the anti-trinity hipsters on here being completely dictatorial about how there should be absolutely zero trinity. And I dislike how you get patronised or flamed to hell if you disagree with them.

I personally couldn’t give a crap if GW2 sticks with its current combat system or does decide to delve further into a trinity-like game. I’ll still enjoy playing it either way.

One observation I would make though is that this game has become very one-dimensional in that DPS is EVERYTHING. There is absolutely no reward for building your character with a heal-based build (as proven by WoodenPotatoes in his youtube video covering that particular topic), and the only profession build that comes close to a proper “tank” is a cleric Guardian, and even then you’ll get ‘rekt’ by a lot of PvE creatures. Trinity advocates simply want more reward for more diverse gameplay options. Anti-trinity people are essentially saying that the current DPS-is-best scenario is acceptable. It’s not.

What to do in the meantime.

You know you are free to play different games and come back when the expansion hits right?

This is a very weak argument in defence of the game, and frankly isn’t valid in the context of what the OP is asking.

Being able to play another game is a default position. You don’t need to bring attention to that fact.

An attribute of a good MMO is that it should keep you entertained for the entire time you are playing it and offer regular updates to substantiate this. It is not good when some of the playerbase are stuck in a ‘bored limbo’ waiting for an expansion, because this is a sign that the original game is lacking in certain areas.

Yes, it is a case of individuality when it comes down to who-enjoys-playing-what, but it is not good practice when a game development team slacks on updates in lieu of an expansion with a completely undisclosed release date.

Yeah guess i just should have said bursting down since he started at long-range but pretty sure he also used his melee sword skills too. Each time it happened incredibly quick though so never really took notice of the order he did things in.

I’ve fought zerker mesmers before on my Ranger, and some I’ve had no problems with while others who are obviously more skilled have been really hard-hitting even against my full-tank regen set up.

Since beta I’ve only ever played condition Ranger and all variations thereof. But more recently I decided to level a Mesmer to 80 and I’m freakin loving it. What inspired me to create a Mesmer was seeing one on the enemy team in WvW EB: he was standing far back from the south SM gates and basically sniping down, in seconds, any member of our team who went in to attack him. I thought, “kitten that looks fun to play” so I made one. He was wielding a GS and S/P. Could he have been using some kind of shatter-based build?

I’m at level 75 at the moment just using pvp as a way of practicing zerker mesmer play and leveling up using tomes at the same time. I’ve just been using a basic 6/6/x/x/x in pvp, but thought I’d ask around for advice on particularly lethal burst builds. I’m not having too many issues taking down squishy players, but tankier ones can present more problems due to my lack of experience.

- Give Rangers a ‘quiver’ utility that acts like an engineer’s toolkit
- quiver, depending on which bow you are wielding, turns skillset into one that fires different arrows

exploding arrows, arrows that conjure vines from the earth upon hit, fire arrows, arrows that bounce between targets, arrows that immobilize, arrows that heal allies when passed through them and leech HP from the enemy.

Dem possibilities.

Let's Speculate: Role of Druid?

in Ranger

Posted by: Bryzy.2719

Bryzy.2719

I’m assuming the staff got some aoe and support/cc abilities to it, all existing staff users in the game already got this to a certain degree. And the ranger certainly needs it. Wouldn’t even mind if a couple of the skills were reskinned skills as long as they will improve the ranger as a support class.

I’m more curious about what changes they will do the profession mechanic, or rather to what extent they will change it up. The pet stays, obviously. We didn’t need the alpine wolf to appear in the trailer to be sure of that. Any fundamental changes to the F1-F4 skills would affect our ability to control our pet, so.. Yeah, I have no idea what Anet is planning. I think the pet mechanic will somewhat limit what they can do to rangers regarding specializations unless they’re willing to fundamentally change it.

I’m really hoping Anet took on that forum idea of the ‘Aspect of the Pet’ profession mechanic. Or at least something like it. We basically handed all the concepts to them on a plate. When Allie Murdock was still here, she loved the idea. However my only hesitation is that it did involve some element of perma-stowing the pet in exchange for an aspect, which I don’t think we’ll be given – especially as seeing the alpine wolf was advertised in the trailer – unless of course stowing the pet remains temporary but we get the aspect regardless?

I agree with you. I think most of the Ranger community are also in agreement as to where the Ranger is lacking: support + control and AoEs in relation to both. The Druid archetype could potentially fill that void well. As long as we come away with at least one skill that is just as helpful as the Guardian’s 12-might-stack staff skill, then I’ll be at least a little satisfied.

I get the impression that the Druid is going to be a case of Anet getting it very right or very wrong. I think it says a lot that Anet decided to make the Druid the ‘pioneering’ specialization to showcase/confirm: it could imply that it’s the spec they’re most proud of/confident in. But we’ll see.

God I can’t freakin’ wait for Druid spec. Might we ACTUALLY have some kind of useful support capabilities?? Anyway, I would not care what the other staff skills are if #5 was like this:

Nature’s Sanctum

- 1000-1200 radius AoE support skill.
- Progressive healing to allies within the area
- 1 condition removal per 2 seconds you are within the area (skill area would last, say, 10 seconds – so a total of 4 conditions removed if you are in the area for the full period)
- Stacking protection for allies within the area (a bit like how swiftness stacks on the guardian AoE staff skill if you stand in it for the full period of time)

The graphic of the skill would of course be something nature based, such as the growth of foliage, flowing water sources and maybe little animals jumping about or some such shiz. And maybe a nice happy ray of sunshine too :-3

If not, then I guess skill #5 could always be to summon zhaitan and call down his fiery wrath on errybaddy for like 10 seconds LOL.

I’ve played since early access but never actually bothered to theorycraft builds and always relied on metas and other people’s advice.

Anyway, in the spirit of druidism – pun intended – here’s a build fully focused on healing/support for team encounters. Gameplay is using skills available to you to keep your friends alive in scenarios such as boss fights, attacking keeps and coming under fire (so allied zerg is static), general zerging,. This is my first own-made build so I won’t be surprised if you guys find lots of holes/flaws in it. Not had chance to test if it’s even worth playing as I’m not at home. So essentially, it might be pure crap.

Sources of healing:

- Healing spring
- Warhorn skill 5 for blast finisher in healing spring
- Pet F2 skill activation (invigorating bond trait)
- Permanent regen for you, pet and allies with “guard” and Nature’s Voice trait
- Regen from Sylvari hound F2
- Circle of Life trait – creates healing spring around you when you are downed (may be better to swap out for concentration training?)
- Spirit of Nature
- Greatsword “swoop” leap finisher through water fields
- Superior sigil of water: 30% chance on hit to heal allies in a radius around your target
- Superior sigil of renewal: heals allies on weapon swap

As I say this is an entirely selfless build so there is no focus on your own attacking power.

Could this be a useful basis for a support build at all or is it just entirely worthless?

What if GW2 had Trinity - but it also didn't?

The original OP already tried this earlier this week : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Will-PvE-give-more-value-to-support-builds

Please check the forum rules – posting for the same thing over and over again is like flogging a dead horse. It still won’t move or go any faster

If you’d actually READ THE THREAD, you would have seen:

Lazaar.9123:

Isn’t this just the exact same topic of your other thread that was locked?

Bryzy.2719:

Nah, that one was more specific to support builds, and in that thread I was expressing my own opinion as to what I wanted to see in the game. This thread’s purpose is to gain an understanding of what profession systems could be in the game, and how those theoretical systems would be perceived by the community. No opinion from OP.
Also, that thread wasn’t locked because of the topic. It was locked because of the heated debate that was started by respondents. Kindly refrain from bringing any ad hominem or aggravating posts into this one.

I fear that members of this community are so entrenched in their own agendas, and so quick to aggressively defend their personal ideologies, that they are trying to oppose an OP who isn’t even expressing opinion in this thread. Yes, I have expressed opinions that you may not agree with elsewhere, but this thread holds no opinions from me. Did you ignore the all-caps “DISCLAIMER”, alongside the multiple other sentences saying “this is not an opinion” in the original post? Jesus christ.

If your theory sounds pretty daft and full of holes to you – what makes you think it won’t sound the same to Anet?

Don’t be silly!

I would guess the Mesmer special might also get a main dagger (I don’t think there’s currently any class that can ONLY main a dagger), or a mace (basically cause it’d be interesting and it’s currently only used by 2 classes). But yeah drxynnic you do echo something fairly important.

Mesmers with maces would allow them to wield the Moot.

Then we’ll have disco mesmers.

I don’t think Greatsword Necro will be ‘executioner’ since a Necro does the opposite of of executing things; a Necro raises the dead. Unless you guys think the theme of the specialisation takes the opposite approach? :P
