Too much content?

Celtic Lady.3729

I can definitely see your point. One the one hand, something new regularly can be interesting, but on the other hand, it can get to feeling like an achievement treadmill, if you want to experience as much from the content as possible. Just when you get caught up, there’s a new to-do list, as it were, on the board. The other downside of cycling content, is the demotivating feeling that once you start missing sets, you’re not really getting much out of the game, anyway. You miss an update, you don’t know what’s going on, so it’s easier to miss the next event, then the next…

It’s early yet in the whole 2-week content routine. This is the honeymoon phase for it. Time will tell if 2-week updates will be able to keep people long-term. Rift did regular mini-updates as well but as they got increasingly stale, the player-base began to fall off.

Not everyone will stick around to wait for an expansion.

To be fair, the Living Story isn’t keeping every single player, either. There are as many things to dislike about temporary content as there is to dislike about long waits, although many an MMO has done well without bimonthly minigames.

Because I believe only children are capable of such ridiculous thoughts. Maybe they will prove me wrong, which will make it even worse.

Unfortunately, no, I’m not. I only wish there were a ‘report’ option on that mail. I didn’t ask for charity and if I were to, I surely would not be asking for such a useless item.

What a sorry state today’s youth is in.

Indeed it is… quite ungrateful nowadays.

Celtic Lady.3729

Yeah, the nice thing about a real expansion is that it includes content that I can play whenever I have time rather than over a 2-week and once-hourly time frame when I am likely to be busy with other aspects of my life. I have missed entire story arcs that are nowhere explained because I have other things to do than game. It creates a disjointed feel to the game for me that is demotivating overall. I’ve had players tell me they’ve gone back to other games because they feel they’ve missed too much already and will likely miss a lot more in the future that they can’t simply play through on their own time.

Living Story mini additions like mini-games and the occasional new DE is vastly different than a full expansion. To the player, it feels vastly different to have hours of content – new maps, new dungeons, and new gear ready and waiting to explore whenever they want than little bits here and there of content that, such as with this update, you do a lot of sitting around waiting and can’t play whenever you have the time.

Southsun Cove has been a dead zone since it was created, essentially, the all of two events surrounding it notwithstanding. The map could have been designed more intelligently so that it would have staying power, but that didn’t happen. It’s not a player-friendly map, so players don’t use it. Too bad, since it makes no sense to spend time and money creating something so unusable that all efforts are more or less a waste of those resources.

Discoed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Celtic Lady.3729

Celtic Lady.3729

The current event setup is especially unfriendly to DCed players, as once you’re in a map and get DCed, chances are you’ll never get back into that map and the event for it is essentially ruined for you. This has happened to me twice when I’ve been in the final map I need for the achievement. It’s frustrating to say the least. The design of this content is seriously flawed when you cannot play content but once every hour. I should have been able to reconnect to the game, get in an overflow map, and complete the event, which was only 18 minutes into it. Or else, the maps ought to be on a predictable rotation so players can plan to enter the maps they still need.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we never see an expansion on this game. If Arena Net is making enough money with their bimonthly mini updates and their new rotation of items in the store, they essentially have no motivation to sink money into a full expansion.

Simple Solution for Champion Loot in Events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Celtic Lady.3729

Celtic Lady.3729

The number one problem with your solution is the number at which DR kicks in needs to be a lot higher than 4. It needs to be high enough to cover the actual number of champs that will be killed during a normal event run or else you’re punishing players simply for playing the event where a certain number of champs are going to be killed in the course of completion.

Also, this game has too much DR anyway. Other MMOs don’t have DR to punish their players and they do just fine.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Celtic Lady.3729

I suppose killing another dragon – there are 4 more to go, right? – would involve an expansion to continue the personal story. However, nothing so far has suggested that an expansion will ever be in the offing. If the money rolls in with bimonthly content and new toys in the store, there’s really no motivation to spend the money on a full-blown expansion.

The main issue: players want to farm

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Celtic Lady.3729

Celtic Lady.3729

Anet very carefully controls their economy in-game so that players in general can’t accumulate too much money overall. Not being able to make money in-game overmuch means more money spent on gems to buy gold to get what they want. This is the goal and is why farms are nerfed each time one comes to light. Working as intended. It’s also why there are systems like DR in place – to control the amount of gold coming into player hands. Of course, there’s always a party line, usually something about making the game more fun or balancing things, but the bottom line is control and gem/gold sales.

Random is random. RNG means something will happen the first time for some and never for others. Usually, when I see people get upset about RNG, it’s over something to do with legendaries. I’m not really sure what the fuss is concerning them. They’re not that big a deal and if the only thing you like about this game is owning a legendary, are you even playing the right game?

Name an MMORPG better than Guild Wars 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Celtic Lady.3729

Celtic Lady.3729

Though RNG sucks, GW2 uses it because, for most humans, it seems to work. Give a person a guaranteed reward, and they’ll do that thing once and get the reward and go on. Give a person a mere chance to receive a reward and they’ll do something repeatedly with basically no limit. Therefore, RNG makes them more money than more solid approaches. If the majority of people didn’t tolerate the randomness by using their pocketbooks to express this, RNG would be replaced with something else. But it doesn’t need to be because even though some folks complain about not liking it, the vast majority of people will simply continue to shell out money on the chance of getting said reward.

New dungeon reward system a nerf to alts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Celtic Lady.3729

Celtic Lady.3729

This looks like another farm nerf. It’s fairly obvious by now that Anet hates farming since each one is nerfed in turn. Making sure the majority of players can’t make money quickly compared with TP prices on higher end items ensures players are buying enough in-game gold with actual money rather than earning it in-game.

Design Philosophy: Then and Now

I see the definition of grind is up for grabs again.

Oh, yeah. But then, it always is in every MMO. Grind is a subjective term that also has a generally understood meaning. It’s the subjective part that everyone disagrees on. Fanboys will always claim their fave game has no grind and disgruntled players usually have it as a major complaint. Even when the context usage is clear, there will be differences of opinion because that subjective sense is always there. The ability to be truly, completely objective is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Everyone has perceptions and biases that are always in play whether or not this is consciously realized.

Thoughts on the March 26th Patch

To me, the Living Story addition was underwhelming. I thought the rewards at the end were basically useless and the instances felt really repetitive. The norn Braham seemed particularly lame and unbelievable. It seemed like such a cliche – we need something epic, so let’s pull out the old “Someone important has a long lost completely unknown adult love child that looks older than his/her parent.”

Even so, it was a free content update and a little something extra to do.

people … buy tons of keys.(success).

This is why ArenaNet does the whole RNG thing with all their new shinies each month. Because enough people will buy hundreds of keys and/or chests for a chance at a skin or item. If the majority of players refused to spend money unless they knew exactly what they were getting, this would not be profitable and so it would be handled differently. But since there are enough players that “need” everything and have money to waste, this scenario works beautifully for them.

I can only assume that the number of players willing to shell out money for a chance at something via Black Lion chests far outnumbers the players that dislike this sort of thing. If people were unwilling to gamble for rewards, I doubt this would be done. Personally, I don’t pay money to gamble in a video game, but it seems clear to me that many, many others do. Therefore, we see it repeated.
