This build is strong because it has sustain, a lot of it , without going healing power gear . It allows you to go damage gear while rivaling a ranger bunker with 900 healing power in sustain

Hey guys, i want to share something pretty hilarious i have just thought out, made and played . I am , however, pretty bad at the basic trapper build as i have not played it in months and months , so i will not be able to provide quality videos yet , but soon.

Anyways , here is the build:

The thought process, and some of the wtf moments here . Probably the biggest question people would ask themselves , is Choko crazy? Why would he skip trappers expertise in favor of quick draw ??
Well, the paradigm of this build is that you are constantly moving, quite often within stealth of hunters shot which would get a reduced cooldown, so you want to plant as many traps as possible , not losing precious seconds .
It is quite possible to place 2-3 traps and get half of the barrage off in stealth .

In PvP you would absolutely want the biggest possible AOE on traps because everyone fights on point , in WvW this is not the case . You also do not telegraph where you throw the traps . 1/2 second of casting time can easily be missed .

It is sort of a run and gun strategy , a very mobile form of play . The sigil of earth on the longbow is due to the fact that every trap tossed when the longbow is equiped with proc a bleed, as will longbow attacks . A bleed here and there…. it adds up . The sword is very good for survivability and running away. I use the torch because i made Rodgort, but i dare say a warhorn or dagger would be more effective here .

So the combos :

There are 2 important combos here , but you do not have to force them . The first would be annoying the oponent then going into stealth, dropping 2-3 traps and starting barrage on top of them . The aoe covered is pretty cool and you get to proc gazillion of bleeds . You are in relative safety in stealth as well . Can be done every 20 seconds of so .

The big one comes similarily but after traps you use entangle IN STEALTH unleash lightning breath and rapid/barrage . Now that is really satisfying if it works . It is usually a one off in duels due to entangle 150 recharge .

Traps , the amount and type, depend on the enemy you are facing . Vs thieves i would use 3 traps, poison fire and spike . I would do that vs guardians as well . Vs engineers and necromancer i take a signet of renewal for the OH CRAP condition bomb clear .
Vs warriors , shared anguish and lightning reflexes or protect me is a must . Protect me is actually safer because you are actually immune to his stun damage combos… Immune to the damage not the stuns :p . Longer cooldown though .

Runes also depend on what you want to do . 6 afflicted, 6 undead, 3 afflicted 3 krait , 2 lysa 4 nightmare , 6 elementalist runes … Anything that gives condition damage, duration or specific duration .

Final note : I keep a shortbow as well . You can even run both bows at the same time if you choose to . Whatever makes you happy .

Just DO NOT think inside the box how the longbow is a power weapon yada yada yada . Trapper always functioned as an inverse build , damage came from traps , weapon skills are filler and utility . Same deal .

The build is on the strong side, but why is it so ?

In my mind, the culprit is the new healing signet with adrenal heal and berserker stance , coupled with a short cooldown on skull crack .

Toning down healing signet but improving its benefit from healing power and increasing skull crack cooldown to 15 secs basic would be more then enough imo

I would say Necromancers or warriors require no skill either . hell, even thieves or elementalists are easy enough to play…

the most awesome and awe inspiring stuff in Starcraft, the biggest E-sports game of all time , has been based on a bug or exploit, with a huge learning curve and obscene APM to perform . This is why spectators and players alike went into a frenzy when one of those exploits was performed . None of these were actually intended by the developer or were serious game or engine limitations . Take the Reaver for example …. clunky slow, silly targeting … but oh my god the reaver drop plays that were shoutcasted.. Mutalisk stacking ….

Anyway , the sword is one of , or the only weapon that is a hyperbole , non linear , with a slightly bigger learning curve, compared to pretty much everything in this game which is fire and forget , or auto attack while timing your dodge or stun break/condition removal . Hell, even the balance is going towards nerfing everything that is pointed out as monthly OP instead of making many, and I dare say MANY overpowered, as in SITUATIONAL OVERPOWERED builds and strategies , to make the game interesting .

As it stands out :
Hmmmm… Engi can burst condition and sustain…. put him on the team
Elementalist can move quickly, burst and sustain.. put him on the team
Necro can spamm conditions and sustain.. put him on the team
etc etc….

There are no scalpel builds , no toolbox builds , no extreme builds with a few strong points and many weaknesses to be covered by great teamplay . Everything is clear as day made for monkeys on a typewriter .
And you want to fix the ONLY thing that makes the ranger semi interesting and requires any practise to do ????

it does not lock you IN PLACE, it locks you ON TO the target so that if it moves, you jump to it right away . Stop just basing things on PvE .

Honestly, RAO should count as a shout . It is the only ability that has no benefits from traits . what does the pet. description even mean ??

Hey guys , i have been thinking for a while about pets and the fairly known issue of them in high level PvE content . So i think i may have come up with a solid solution that would quite possibly be an overall solution to the problem . Of course this has nothing to do with pet AI as it is another mater entirely .

Companions defense -This is the Wilderness master minor trait that gives 2 seconds of protection to pet and ranger on dodge . My idea would be for it to give 2 seconds of protection on ranger and aegis for the pet .

-Why one might ask ? Well, the pet will get instakilled in dungeons protection or not , and the block will actually help them survive those nasty burst attack AOEs that everyone dodges and pet eats . I also do not see it being OP in any way in PvP

Instinctual bond – This is the adept minor trait in the BM line, and one of the worst traits in the game currently . My idea would be to give the pet aegis on using a heal spell .

Honestly, ranger can perma dodge. Even if you get hit by the stun, Tu will restore 100% of your HP . It is very annoying when he chains you for 10+ seconds . But still, not that bad imo

I do not think he is talking about balance here . This is about functionality, or lack of thereof . Simply put , a segment of the game is not working properly . It needs to be optimized first and then we can talk about balance number tweaks .

Pets are a a problem more then they are useful and considering this is a class defining trait , it needs to be fixed ASAP . AI and player controlability I mean

Actually, they have 1000 hp per sec if they use the healing signet , but that is a heal . Factor in TU and then make the comparison . I think Rangers come out on top, while dealing more damage due to pet

Actually, at minor adept it was OP pound for pound . Other classes only get it from GM major traits as well .

However , considering the sad state of the ranger it was not OP in the grand scheme of things .
Now, the BM line has lost a lot of its OOOMPH , and there are lots of traits that need a strait buff, starting from the useless instinctual bond

I would like to start off with a statement that Ranger weapons are almost well defined in their roles , with a need for a few more tweaks in balance .
But honestly i find it rather odd that we have only 2 main hand weapons yet 4 off hand weapons . Furthermore , there is one role that is clearly missing with all weapons , and that is a stun,CC, control one .

So i am here to suggest a couple ideas that came to mind :

MAIN HAND TORCH
-I know, it sounds a bit silly , but why not ? Considering ranger is in fact a druid of sorts, or a semi-magi if you will , I think it could be pretty cool to give him some fire-bending abilities .

1 Auto attack chain – Flaming Whip * – The ranger attacks at 450-600 range . The first and second attacks could perhaps inflict 1 stack of vulnerability . The 3rd attack of the chain would be an AOE whirl , not a finisher , like a 360 degree swing that inflicts 1-1.5 seconds of burning to enemies as well as doing moderate damage

2 – Dragons cloak * – The ranger creates a cloak giving himself protection and vigor for 3-4 seconds and giving the pet Aegis . 20 second cooldown

3 – Updraft * – The ranger creates an updraft at the targeted AOE if 120-180 tossing enemies into the air causing a 1 second knockback and 2 second daze upon landing . Cooldown 35 seconds

MAIN HAND DAGGER

-One suggestion i have seen is the dagger one . Makes sense , it is fairly simple and pretty cool… Why should the thief be the only one with the ninja feel to him :p

1 Auto attack chain * – melee auto attack chain that does damage and inflicts 1 bleed for 2-3 seconds for the first 2 strikes . The 3rd strike gives fury to the pet for 3 seconds .

2 Primal Leap – 600 range leap that inflicts 2-3 stacks of torment for 5 seconds

3 Fan of Knives – Throw daggers in an area around the ranger inflicting blind and cripple for a few seconds .

What do you think ? do you think the ideas are ok to start off a brainstorming session ?
Do you think the ranger needs a new main hand or not ?? Like pie or popcorn ?? Watever…

i run an apothecary beastmaster build with sword torch and SB. I use projectile finishers inside bonfire with the bow for burning , Works pretty well for me :p

In my opinion, the developers are making huge changes that nuke popular builds without giving the players time to develop proper responses . There is no incentive to develop hyperbole builds because everyone knows that the most popular build for every class will get nerfed within 2 months .

Also, balance is almost never in the numbers, but usually comes down to design . This is where GW2 suffers, as lots of things are not completed .

But consider this, even for hyper E-sport games like Starcraft 2 , achieving acceptable balance by player standards took years . And , in all honesty, sc2 has 1 game mode and 3 races . Not to mention a massive budget and a developed E-sports brand which Guild Wars will never have .

My suggestion would be to focus on finishing and debugging skills . Even tweaking some design choices to provide more options . And even if a totally imba build appears, if its not based on a bug or exploit , leave it be for a while , maybe a solution present itself from the players side . Do not cater to the so called pro calling for nerfs without trying to figure things out .

Actually it is a liability because you do not have full control over it , babysitting it means a big loss in overall DPS because it is the only class ability that is factored into core damage and not a boost to core damage . Also there are lots of pet abilities that would make the current pet system not only good , but very very good if not for the fact that a player is given control over only 1 pet ability .

Giving players control over all pet specials would catapult ranger utility into the stratosphere .

While every class can be played in every area, there are issues with effectiveness , and sadly ranger does not do anything better then any other class . Considering this is a game of min-maxing and ranger being a sort of jack of all trades kind of class you will find yourself in a difficult position to justify yourself in a 5 man party over any other class .

However, in WvW roaming and PvP ranger is good . While pet is a big liability in dungeons, here in small skirmishes it shines because you can go tanky or condition overload and still get solid dps and versatility from the pet .
Also going for dual melee, i.e. greatsword and swort+XX you have some of the best mobility in game and can be a good scout .

All in all , ranger is very fun no doubt , but its a very eccentric class with a lot of AI and design issues . You can roll it, but be sure to play dungeons with friends because u will have a bad time with PUG groups

JPs are my favorite part of the game, this is like Xmas for me
