Could have sworn I left SoR because of how hostile, uncooperative, and “mine’s bigger” the atmosphere and community [usually] were.
From my experience, Riven is a better Commander and community leader largely because he’s simply a better person than most of the people in leadership positions on SoR. It’s saturated with poor sportsmanship and an inability to handle loss without becoming hostile and finding things to complain about.
While issues in leadership exist on all servers in some way or another, none suffer from it so blatantly as the guilds I was involved with while on SoR (with the exception of CDS). I’m not going to name any names because those who partake in social and in-game behaviors which reflect poorly on their guild tags know exactly who they are—you should know, however, that I’m not only talking about SoR; work needs to be done on all ends.
But I digress.
The opinions of those who do not meaningfully contribute to their servers without making complete jackkittens of themselves or their guilds mean nothing and should be ignored.

Battlefield diplomacy isn’t going anywhere. It’s a part of war.
So for fractals you use all zerker gear (just gear or weapons and trinkets also?) if only zerkers gear then what runes do you use with them?
Zerker armor, earrings, amulet, and weapons. My soldier’s rings and back item stay on. The armor is 6/6 Superior Rune of the Wurm because I can’t afford Scholar right now.
I’ve heard/seen reports of people successfully transmuting their legendaries since the last patch wherein they keep their purple text and no longer have that pesky “of the X” sigil suffix, so I’m pretty secure in my decision to transmute my Sunrise when I get it.
To the purple haired CHOO Mesmer, good fights down South in BG BL around the Supply Camp. I was on my Guardian…you and I squared off a number of times.
That’s Alapca. :>
Thanks for those that showed up. It was very difficult hosting today with so many 3rd party viewers. We didn’t intend so much frustration from both sides. Nevertheless, our end goal was to promote a healthy rep serverwide no matter how chaotic it might have been.
Good work, highest regards and much thanks from Choo!

The culling did get pretty ridiculous after a bit.
Question:
This is a very serious question with no hidden agendas or accusations.
Is ressing through a watergate a dead mesmer who swam there while downed inside bay considered to be an exploit/frowned upon?
Reviving a Mesmer through a regular gate instantly feels wrong when you think about it, so I’d have to say it’s frowned upon at the least, an exploit at the worst.
The lag in SM was so bad for a few minutes that I almost cried. True story.
Seems to be the other way around from what I hear. You do realize I’ve got many friends in Blackgate, a lot of which were former KnT that left your guild for one the reasons I did – poor leadership and nothing getting done. They’re so far the only people to have wiped me. Meanwhile every time I’ve seen KnT they’re getting wiped or fleeing. I will say it was enjoyable getting 2 bags after stomping you yesterday.

I wish I could get off on stomping entire groups of SoR alone as well as you must on flattering yourself. I wonder how many of my 1,000 most recent kills were you or your guildmates.
o_o
If your’re not having fun with a stacking sigil, I suggest Sigil of Force for PvE.
The only time I ever really pop VoR is if it’s my only chance to survive until my next cooldown is up, whether it be Shelter, my elite, or even just a dodge roll.
REV is having a lot of fun in the field lately. (: Keep up the good fights from every server.
I’m personally able to pull off front-lining and line-breaking quite well in Cleric’s gear. The healing power also helps with upkeep on fellow front-liners, if that’s your thing.

In other news, my next montage-esque video may be a little ways away. I’ve recently upgraded to Adobe Premiere and will be spending some time learning to use that. I’m also on my legendary grind, finally. (: 77 Clovers down!
I’ll try to put out a few things between now and the next montage to keep myself busy. There are a couple of ideas I’ve been dying to use in a video. ^^

I’ve seen some complaints about Guardians and how they’re pidgeonholed (or are being pidgeonholed) into support roles and can’t/should’t be used for anything else. I see a lot of talk about how Thieves and Warriors are OP and can’t be beaten 1v1 or even 1vX.
Well, I’m here to dispute those claims and prove the painful mortality of those professions that might be considered too powerful by many players.
My goal is to prove just how powerful any profession can be in the right hands and with the right build. That said, I’ll be leveling a Ranger, Mesmer, Necro, and one other character in the months to come and then working to put out quality video content with each of them. I hope you’ll join me in my adventures. ^^

Does this build work well in regular dungeons and fractals ? :o
It does, but I usually throw zerker gear on on top of the Healway trait setup. Just speeds it up considering it’s easy enough to dodge bad stuff in PvE.

Retal doesn’t proc off of confusion, and confusion doesn’t proc off of retaliation. You can try to fight through 2 stacks of confusion, but just stop doing anything that doesn’t heal you if you have 3+ stacks. Do what you can to remove the stacks and LoS your enemies if you end up with a high confusion stack.
Another double post, sorreh. Got a new video: a live commentary. :o It runs about 30 minutes, but there’s a table of contents with time links in the description if you like.
Enjoy.
Roaming LIVE Commentary!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwsxhL7r0k8
The only profession I’ve really had to deal with stacking retaliation has been—surprise—Guardians. If it’s only one target with retal, it can be outhealed. If it’s two, I can still outheal it if I play intelligently. Any more than that and it can get a little frustrating, sometimes to the point where I actually have to leave the fight.
The thing is, any build with retal that hits hard enough to hurt this build (or any other healing-based build, like D/D Cleric’s Ele) typically doesn’t have very high uptime, so it’s easy enough to just heal through the spurts of retal damage.
I’m pretty sure I’ve only had to leave a fight because of retal once.

It’s a dumb thing to do. If you’ve maxed out every map, go do JPs or something while the other servers give you something to take back.
1. From what I’ve gathered on this thread and my own understanding, stat wise, we try to max power/hp/tough with this build. Clerics gives more hp. Soldiers gives more power, but sacrifices the hp for vit (not too bad). So I was wanting to do a mix of the two. How much is appropriate and where? I can get soldiers stuff easy enough from AC runs and Karma vend in Orr. Just need to know where its best to put the more expensive Clerics equipment I get, and how much compared I need? Maybe just trinkets? Weapons too? etc…
If you want more vitality and power, I suggest starting with full Cleric’s and replacing small pieces with Soldier’s as you get more comfortable with the build. I wouldn’t go below 1000-1100 healing power, though.
2. With the staff buffs are you thinking about incorporating one into your build? especially as you have the two-hand mastery trait and would pay off more there with staff than 1h sword…?
It’s not something I’m considering for solo or small group roaming. However, I may consider using one more often in larger groups. I’m just not a huge fan of the staff.
3. Along those same lines, have you ever thought about double GS?
Both greatswords would share cooldowns with eachother.
Things that grant us Retaliation:
1. “Save Yourselves!” (16s)
2. “Stand Your Ground!” (8s)
3. Standing in Symbol of Wrath (1s/tick)
4. Leaping out of SoW (7s)
5. Activating any virtue (7s)
These durations don’t take into account the +25% retal duration trait. You don’t even have to be in combat to test it for yourself.
1) Switching Two-hand mastery to Watchful Spirit.
Crazy, but hear me out. 20% faster cooldown on the greatsword is awesome, yes. But with this play style, we’re pretty switching weapons constantly. Greatsword already have pretty short cooldowns. Most of these will be up by the time we switch back. Getting a 5 second retaliation (due to our build) whenever Aegis ends, seems far more useful. We’re pretty much getting a free retiliation every 30 seconds while in combat
2) Switching Defender’s flame to Retributive Armor
This one is a little bit more iffy, but I feel that increasing our crit rate from 4% to 8% (or 24% to 28%) creates a greater consistant dps increase than the situational burn that only happens during block.
1) We have 100% retaliation uptime already.
2) 4 addition crits per 100 hits (on average) with only 160% crit damage would have a hard time outweighing 328 [+ damage from Might stacks] per block against any number of foes considering how often this build has blocks available.
anyone know, if there is a cleric backpack?
Nope, no Cleric’s backpack.
which laurel amulet would be better with this build:
Amulet of Protection (defensive infusion slot)
Salma’s Diamond Jubilee Necklace (offensive infusion slot)
Up to preference. I haven’t personally decided between +5 toughness or +5 power, but in the end it isn’t a very big difference anyway.

Well I’m certainly not going to try to impress people on a Thief. :o
Thank you to everyone that provided constructive comments. All of this information is very useful to me. ^^
Might want to change your focus. Rangers got nerfed in wvw.
That’s the point.
I want to see what I can make of what many consider the weakest profession in WvW.
Are you looking for 1on1, duels specifically? Or are you looking to do what you do in those videos specifically? I think you specified what, but I just want to make sure.
Only build that would come close to what a guardian can do , and in your videos atleast is a 30/10/30 build possibly with greatsword / sword torch but even then your damage will be horrible and you’ll be relying on pets most of the time.
Maybe we could duel as I see you’re on Blackgate and I can help you out with various builds as we duel so you can get an understanding. I know it’s only in the context of duels but should give you a good understanding of the class in general and what it’s strengths and weaknesses are.
Ideally I’ll be able to defeat a minimum of 2 level 80s at a time. Being able to win 1v1 is fun, but not quite as exciting as winning out-manned fights.
I don’t have a problem with dueling a ranger or two to check out how their builds work; I actually don’t see many around (go figure), so I haven’t got a whole lot of experience fighting them thus far.
(edited by Christos de Soufre.3802)
And I want to know a few things. I’m hoping the Ranger community can help me out.
1. What are the most popular defensive builds?
2. How capable would you say a good Ranger is of taking on 2+ level 80s and winning?
3. Are there any absolutely garbage weapons for the Ranger?
4. Are there any absolutely garbage attributes for the Ranger?
5. Which is more viable: a power- or condition-based build?
The goal is to achieve video-grade combat efficiency, similar to what I’m able to accomplish on my Guardian. While I obviously don’t expect to be able to do everything a Guardian can do on a Ranger that I have no experience with, what I want to know is whether it’s possible and, if so, which directions it would be best to take with my build.
Thanks in advance for any and all input you may be able to provide.
Are members of JQ calling bandwagon on another server?
Hrm.
Can Kaineng, TC, and SoS all just give up for the rest of the week? I’d love to get to T1 this week rather than next. <3
I don’t even understand what that note meant. All I know is that I can still keep retal up 100% of the time and it still does as much damage as it did before.
And that this build just got even more powerful with the PoV fix and the introduction of Cleric’s ascended gear. Squeeee…erm, manly squee.
Introduced five new stat combos on Ascended Rings and Amulets, which can be found in the usual locations for these items.
Ahhhhhhhh asjklasfa!
Now to pray that one of them is Cleric’s, or at least very close. And while I’m at it…
Pure of Voice: This trait has been fixed to always properly convert conditions into boons.
Ahhhhhhhh asjklasfa!
There are also a few other changes for all Guardians to be excited about, such as LoW being castable on the move, the buff to OoL, and the casting speed increase to Empower.

I have been considering switching to this build for a while I really enjoy watching your videos Chris. I do have a question though, how does this build perform in dungeons and general PVE?
It works well enough in dungeons because of how defensive it is; it’s almost have to TRY to get killed. I do have a tendency to just throw zerker gear on over my defensive traits when I go into PvE though…
The drawback to playing a defensively-oriented build is that you likely won’t be able to finish off other defensively built players. If you absolutely cannot seem to get enough damage on a target, switch to another one.
The best advice I can offer for staying on your targets is to practice. GS and sword are the most mobile weapons we have. It’s an inherent issue with our profession that we have a harder time getting around than others do, so we do have that disadvantage.
Without actually logging in or doing any number crunching, I’m going to assume you replaced 2 runes with majors for extra boon duration, and… well, something with precision. Not a bad stat spread either way.
If you don’t pay careful attention, you can end up getting screwed over by conditions (especially bleeding and burning) when fighting glassy Eles.
Everytime I watch another one of your videos a little piece of my ego breaks and dies. I always end up curled up in a corner crying to myself because I cant do 99% of the things you do.
Haha, I don’t know whether to be flattered or to feel bad. Thank you either way.
Great video Chris! You are a inspiration to some/most of us Guardian players x3. Watching these videos just boosts up my determination to try and pull off stuff like this XP. Though on another note I did come across something when i went about roaming. I came across a glass cannon fire ele. His AoE seemed to by pass my block abilities and still damage through the healing of dodge rolls and such. Might of been poor play on my part but have you ever came across something like this?
Thank ya sir. As far as the Ele goes, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced that. If I’m not mistaken, some ground-targeted AoE (with red circles) can be traited to be unblockable. I’m unsure if Eles have anything like that. Either way, any glass cannon Ele I’ve faced seemed to shrivel after they’d unloaded their burst unsuccessfully.
Worst case scenario, just stop doing anything and run for LoS if you can’t do anything about a current confusion stack.
Haha. Sounds like something I should look into doing. :P
I’m surprised we don’t have a new thread yet. :o
Anyway! Got a new video for people who like to see Tarnished Coast and Kaineng players getting pushed around by big, mean Guardians.
Thanks to both servers for the excellent fights that I pull these clips from. Keep up the hard work. Just stop steamrolling me with zergs when I’m trying to film intro sequences…
I don’t usually like to double-post, but I’d like to share this new video with you all. It’s the latest demonstration by yours truly of this build in action.
In reality I run slight variations of this build depending on who/what I’m fighting and how stacked a map appears to be with a certain enemy build type. Should this latest video (which I put a ridiculous amount of effort into, both in-game and during editing) happen to hit 100 likes, I’ll post a new, more detailed build video.
