Your best bet is to just look here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/New-To-Rangers-Looking-for-guides-CLICK-ME
There are quite a few possibilites and its really up to your preference, playstyle, etc.
In general though condition builds are the most common for roaming, largely because our DD is low compared to any other class on a comparible build, and also because our condition builds lend themselves nicely to working with regen and BM.
Condition builds can take the form of traps, spirits, full regen BM bunkering (with or without shouts), or some combination of the above. Spirits arent great in WvW.
Power builds can work but still often focus on evading and some regen simply because rangers dont burst well and arent naturally tanky, so in most cases its in your best interest to build and play to win in a drawn out fight, rather than expecting to charge in and have it over in 10 seconds.
This is all generally speaking and IMO but.. yeah. Look at the link, so good builds are posted there and dont be afraid to change them to suit you better ^.^

Very interested in seeing this because for some reason it is burned in my memory when I lost to a LB trap ranger when I used to run Fauxs RRR build (this was like 6+ months ago).
Was extremely difficult to fight against because I was using s/t a/d which is quite a short range setup, and it was near impossible to close the gap and to stay next to them.
I did once try to replicate what I think their build was but it never really worked for me.. but that was before celestial (and I would like to think I have improved over the last 6 months :P).
Looks interesting, might give it another try ^^

Hyena + wolf + mistfirewolf + rune of the ogre.
Lets go.

I like the SB but I would say that #2 and #4 could use buffing/changing.
The #3 is awesome and #5 (despite having a long CD for such a short stun) is a ranged interupt so who can complain with that.
The #2 is pretty poor though and #4 is OK but the cripple seems too short duration and it could use some extra effect (yes I know it makes pet attacks bleed, which isnt great).
It would be cool if the #2 attack fanned out but then curved back in on the target, so all the shots hit your main target. Maybe move the cripple to the #2 as well and then make a totally new #4… That would make me happy

Sorry to tell you but backstab is not the be all and end all of this game and there are ways to counter it.
Gunnar’s Hold
Did you ever consider they are trying to body block you on purpose and you failed to work around it, and that its not just random bad luck?
Gunnar’s Hold
If I come across people 1v1ing I check to make sure the person on my server isnt getting facerolled. If they arent I leave them be and watch, if they are then I usually jump in.
WvW is an open map though so unless you are deliberately going to the windmind and ruining people dual on purpose, dont let anyone make you feel too bad about join in a fight.
Gunnar’s Hold
Cant comment on PvE really but WvW wise it looks decent. You’ll be pretty hard to kill, wont do too much damage though but could certainly beat people though attrition. You will want to change pets though, since you have spec’ed heavily into BM but the bear isnt going to do much damage, and unlike in PvE people dont target it so the fact it will be impossible to kill doesnt really help you.
You do lack any condition removal at all which will cause problems but other than that I’d say its OK.
Gunnar’s Hold
Oh so good.. thank you xD
The saddest part being its a year old and still 100% relevant.

I actually really like our SB. I mean the theif one is cool and who wouldnt want cluster bomb, but I wouldnt swap bows even if I could.
Gunnar’s Hold
If you ran a pig you could have the same exact ability as well…
I’m not sure and RNG item which can be taken by other players and blocks all your weapon skills until you use it (making you use it instantly even if you dont need it at the time) is really comparible, but OK.
Gunnar’s Hold
I wouldnt have any problem with pets being forced on us if ANet was willing to put in the time to make them work properly and effectively, but since Jon has essentially told us he knows they dont work as well as they could/should but they arent going to fix it any time soon.. they really should consider reducing their part in the rangers playstyle.
Gunnar’s Hold
I think Artemis really got onto what I wanted to say… I dont know if HS is really overpowered, but there is something wrong when nearly all warriors are running the same heal skill in all situations. Thats not right and does suggest its overpowered to a degree, although in 1v1 situations (which is all I can accurately comment on) I dont find warriors using it to be anymore better or worse than another class using some other heal.
Gunnar’s Hold
Interesting :P Was spider/spider when I fought you but hmm.. Could have been FSP I dont pay much attention xD
Gunnar’s Hold
But everyone love PvE man.
Gunnar’s Hold
Greatsword/Longbow is pretty much the best IMO for WvW
depends on what you doing..zerging yes
smallscale and solo roaming nopeFor solo roaming i find GS + Sword Dagger to be an effective combo IF you are using power-builds. Sword and dagger got the DPS and evades, GS gives you a on-demand “GTFO” button
Are you the female norn with the bandana I keep seeing around our ruins? :O
Gunnar’s Hold
Would be nice if they just gave us venoms as well.
I mean its not like utility types are class unique thing.. 3 classes have shouts, 2 have traps, all have signets, etc. Would be no trouble giving rangers venoms with our own twist on them (as long as the twist isnt it effects your pet not you T.T)
Gunnar’s Hold
Had a great evening in the GH ruins and then later in the Deso Bay.. Thanks all involved
Gunnar’s Hold
They ignore what everyone say on the forums.. rangers have been asking for pet AI changes, signet changes, power-based buffs and a whole load of things since day one, and every patch all ANet does is find things we didnt even know were wrong to patch instead.
Sometimes we get good patches for sure, but its never ever ever what we actually ask for or really even considered.
Gunnar’s Hold
This is not really anything new.. I know from dualing with mesmers in my guild that using RoA (or warriors using their signet elite) is just bad because the first thing they do in a dual is boonsteal and your elite becomes their elite.
Necros / Theives / Mesmers all have strong counter play to boons and I think its good and it actually effects rangers less than other classes like eles and guardians who depends on huge boon spam, which we dont.
Gunnar’s Hold
Whenever I play on a DPS build I often go for some immobilize, either muddy terrain or if I am feeling especially trolly I use the sylvari racial which immobilizes for 7 seconds and muddy terrain together.
Immobilize is one of the few things we genuinely can do really well on a ranger and offers so many possibilities with escaping, chasing, holding one person out of a fight in a 2v1, etc. Especially on a berserker build it can be a great defense vs melee opponents.
Gunnar’s Hold
^ That.
I actually see very few thieves doing it, but they can easily leap the water field 3,4 ,5 times in a few seconds if they want to and its a big problem to fight against, especially on a condition build
Gunnar’s Hold
Would be an improvement for sure.. but really it should just effect both by default. Theres no good reason it shouldnt be that way.
They could then turn SoB into an actually awesome trait like other classes have which allows the passive effect of a signet to remain even when the active is used. That would be so very nice…
Gunnar’s Hold
Warriors are surely the closest class to being OP… but your video is essentially you just 100B people who dont know how to dodge or use a stun breaker, which doesnt really prove much.
Gunnar’s Hold
Think Tarsius got it pretty summed up.
Guardiand largely speaking work well, are a popular main choice and effective (even essential) in every aspect of the game.
They might have some problems (every class does) but they dont need attention as much as other classes do.
Gunnar’s Hold
What I find most strange is how variable it is… 2 nights ago I was at a battle in SM lords room and it was so unplayable I couldnt see anyone, my skills didnt work, the usually extreme lag problem. Then last night I was in a blob vs blob battle (easily 40+ on both sides) and I was at 20-30 fps with nearly no skill lag at all.
I have no idea how it can be so god aweful one night and really not a problem at all the next.. but whatever.
Gunnar’s Hold
Just to reitterate the above.. sword isnt great for sustained movement. It gives a nice sudden burst of movement which is great in combat, but for general moving about its not.
I’ve heard its marginally faster than running if you using LR inbetween hornet sting and monarchs leap (obviously while still facing backwards) although it seems a lot of effort for little gain, if its even true.
Gunnar’s Hold
I find vs a necro all you really can do it try and bait them into using their CD then push on them.. running in trying to condition overload them before they do it to you is suicide against a half decent necro.
If you run with regen you can hang on the edge of being in range of eachother and try have your pet and whatever conditions you an get on them wear them down, and your regen will keep you up from the conditions they can get on you.
I run traps and its usually a simular tactic with trying to make them chase me into traps / have my pet on them till theyve dropped some health.. then leap in and try entangle, throw all my traps on them and that should be game over.
Perplexity runners I dont usually have too much trouble will just because rangers dont really use that many channeled attack, and infact many of our attacks are built in evades.. so being interupted I dont find a huge problem as long as you’re aware that its what they are trying to do you should be able to avoid it.
Gunnar’s Hold
Necros are one of the core classes needed in any large scale battle. They can arguably do the most damage and offer a lot of utility with boon corrupting and blinds.
Certainly worth playing if AoE for days is your thing
Gunnar’s Hold
Too be honest I dont mind where they are. It enables and encourages on-crit builds which does actualyl work very nicely with traps.
Also as Xsorus said.. if you move them to WS you suddenly have that traitline way overloaded.
I could see it working if they just flat swapped places with the spirit traits in NM.. would maybe make trappers tankier and power builds could play with spirits for a hybrid condition/DD/support build… but I wouldnt nessesarily think thats better than it is now.. just different.
Edit: Also all classes end up taking some stats they dont ideally need in order to take traits in a given line. Many classes would kill to have prec and crit in the same line so its a little sad to see people complaining about it.

Gunnar’s Hold
Oh a dev posted a post of meaning and real engagement.. I am genuinely shocked but great Thanks Jon.
I’ll glad that power rangers and specifically signets are on your mind.. Its an area a lot of people would like worked on for rangers so I hope you explore that more (and get rid of the need for a GM trait).
Sorry to hear the MH sword is working as intended.. but its at least nice to know.
Gunnar’s Hold
Its essentially camp flipping, scouting and fighting for the buff (if thats your thing).
Roaming has to be something you like doing though because honestly you will spend a lot of your time avoiding larger groups or flat out running from them. You can be the best roamer in the world but when the zerg or a guild appears you need to scoot on out of there, so if thats from your thing you probably wont enjoy it.
Class wise any can work.. necro has some mobility issues which can make it hard to escape if you do get caught out of position.. thief and warrior obviously have the best escaping so can be a little bit more reckless.. but as long as you’re comfortable you can 1v1 or 2v1 on your class/build you should be in good shape.

Nice videos, honestly theyve made me actually want to play again which is the first time in a few months so
Gunnar’s Hold
Runes should not be this powerful. If a memser wants to build their build fully into confusion and can get 25 stacks then good for them.. but there shouldnt be a rune which lets nearly any class get that, its just really very strange game design.
Gunnar’s Hold
Some interesting changes.. nice to see they are actually finally changing things at all.
Like others have mentioned I’d like to have seen condition removal changes / buffs, but generally this seems promising and at the very least interesting.
Gunnar’s Hold
Sounds like a niche skill you’d swap to as and when you need it, rather than having it on all the time.
Gunnar’s Hold
Juvenile Black Bear •Enfeebling Roar: Reduced the recharge from 45 seconds to 40 seconds.
Honestly that one takes the proverbial biscuit. If they really honestly thing that the reason people dont like (black) bears is because their F2 cooldown is 5s too long.. then ANet is really beyond all help.
Gunnar’s Hold
To be honest this is what I expected and I dont have a problem with it really, except that 4s isnt long enough.
Gunnar’s Hold
I havent been playing GW much recently.. was hoping this patch might mix things up a little to give me something new to fiddle with, but honestly there is nothing even slightly interesting there.
A few minor buffs but nothing that would, to my mind, actually make me want to change a build or make a new one. Pretty disappointing for such a hyped up patch.
Gunnar’s Hold
Just make pet stats scale with your average armour level/quality, but keep their stats ratio the same.
That is to say.. if you’re cheaping out of lvl 75 rare gear your pet will be scaled down compared to someone is lvl 80 ascended, but its stat distribution wont change based on what type of armour you have on.
Gunnar’s Hold
I find all the hate for GvGers on this forum hilarious. If my guild and the other guilds on GH who occasionally do GvGs didnt WvW, GH would be 10 ranks lower than it is.
The guilds sustain the entire server yet people cry and cry that we must never do GvG because we ruin WvW.
Its sad.. and ANet have now realy put their foot in it >_>
Gunnar’s Hold
Really nice video, interesting to watch.
I have to say though its bordering on sad how many people still get pulled by the engis pull. Could it really be that hard to dodge with so much warning?
But regardless, really nice play Makes me want an engi xD
Gunnar’s Hold
Some really nice and well thought out changes, I’d love to see these done.
Gunnar’s Hold
I dont really agree.
I never found our weapon ranges to be a big problem, and I am not sure how nerfing half of them (including our lovely lovely GS leap?!) to make it more “realistic” is a solution to anything.
Gunnar’s Hold
Havent been on much tonight but had a great time in the GH ruins. Never seen so many roamers, I’d go as far as to say it was too many xD
Generally I prefer solo roaming but there was just so many people on all sides team fights were inevitable.. but none the less, great fun, and MUCH higher quality opponents that I am used to. Usually roaming is quite relaxing.. kill some noobs here, gank and upleveled or two to boost your ego.. but was serious business in there tonight.
Looking forward to a great week

Looks fairly normal for a berserker build, should work fine.
Personally I prefer QZ or LR to protect me, but I guess thats personal preference.
Gunnar’s Hold
Not sure if this is a joke or you are trying to be serious…
My money is on the first option^^

Would be awesome. MT is one of those skills that I really want to use and do try to use often, but its never quite has enough bite to make me keep it.
