If you really want to win against mesmers by hitting your head on the keyboard like you used to, run SD. The problem is, you’ll lose against everything that’s not a mesmer.
Frankly, if you were an engineer or a necro, I would have told you to just not attack them. But come on, as a thief? It’s not faceroll easy like prepatch, so adapt.
Improvisation helps to get things like withdraw back EXCEPT YOU WON’T EVEN GET CHANCE TO USE WITHDRAW BECAUSE OF STUN SPAM.
Do you really think, that hitting face on keyboard was enough to win vs good mes pre patch? Really? You must have never faced Frosty, Helseth, Supcutie, George etc.
Thieves weren’t faceroll pre patch, yes they were in decent spot but hardly faceroll. Please name me a commonly used build pre patch that thief had same footing against (besides mes and power ranger). The only reason thieves ever got spot on teams and still have it is their mobility but by no means they were any good vs most common builds in 1v1 nor they were THAT amazing in team fights. This is far from faceroll by definition.
Please prooooove me how thieves were faceroll, please. I would love to hear it. It gets thrown around so much and yet every single idiot i knew that switched to thief crying they are OP and faceroll was crying day later about how absolutely unrewarding and hard to play thief is.
Not to forget all the cries when team ended up with more than 1 thief. OMG 2 thieves, we lost, OMG 3 thieves!!!?? I am afk. <<<This was common thing. Thieves were totally faceroll yo.

Here is my problem with mesmer: to win vs them, they have to be absolute garbage and not being able to land any stuns/shatters and not use any survival tools they have. Realisticaly, that happens only vs low tier mesmers. What happens is:
stun stunbreak stun stunbreak stun… ok stunbreak, jk knockback, immob get rekt.
You say blind mesmers dazes? Oh too bad it actually requires to cast something (jk gets interrupted by mez) and have a target (jk stealth spam worse than from thief ftw).
Or are you suggesting that every class should get multiple instant invuls so they can finally deal with mes? Before patch mesmers were good in good hands and required high skill, now any moron drooling on keyboard can succeeed on this class.
OH, and let’s not forget that pvp is team based game. It MAY be possible to somehow to deal with 1 mes but if he has teammates helping them, even if it is 2v2, it is pretty much GG.

Adapt by creating a new class character, or adapt your thief build. The latter is far easier than trying to learn Mes. Mes is still one of the most challenging classes to learn. But good luck.

Based on actions from devs for past few years i assume it will be some glorious shiney spec looking amazing on paper, then 1 day before xpac it gets nerfed to the ground…. and half of it won’t be even implemented despite what is written in patch notes.
The real and useful prayer would be: please make it so devs forget about this class because every time they touch it it just gets worse and worse. Not to mention all the lies from their side.

There’s bugs with all classes right now lolol , not just thief I can assure you of that.
You just feel more targeted because you’re not godlike like last meta. Now mesmers are above you and it hurts, I know, but deal with it.
Thieves may have been godlike at launch when steal could crit and HS and backstab actually did dmg. As far as i know, last meta thieves could only 1v1 mesmers and power rangers… the only reason they were taken in team pvp (and are still taken) is because of their moblity. I don’t see how it can define any class as godly.

In perfect world yes, pvp and pve should be separate. In reality it will never happen. The joke is blizz and some other companies threw exactly same, word per word excuse why they didn’t separate pve and pvp. They would have to hire mode devs for it and it will never happen.

- what is wrong with ele mist form duration, it is not like they are killing anyone with it, they can’t clear condis while in mist form either? thief downstate stealth is already really short and it is not like it is killing anyone…. not it makes anyone immune to dmg….
- not sure if engis would want that launch, because it could potentially knock enemy to the point or remove engi from point… there is nothing more annoying as having no controll where your character goes… why not just change engi explosion to iwin button at this point lol?
None of your suggestions fix any of current problems with bursty meta. All i see is: i play engi and mesmer/thief touched me in wrong spot.

I do not believe that given same skill level thief could kill every single class out there and get away. Also, game is based around small scale group pvp and not 1v1.
It does suck that there is not much varierity, but let’s be happy we have at last one somehow competitive build (could be rangers~). If Anet could balance 1 build for every class for pvp at least it would be a start. You know it is not the case atm though.
I think it is fine that classes are balanced around pvp. Why?
PvE is quite easy and easily rewarding, NPCs will never complain about players killing them. Balancing around pve usually leads to extreme imbalance, never seen in gw2 yet. Did experience it a lot in wow though where pve balancing lead to 1 shots in pvp for months w/o devs aknowledging it.
WvW is just too imbalanced numbers wise + food + gear and level variation. I don’t think it is even remotely possible to gain any balance around that area.
That is my point though. There would be less frustration across the board if risk/reward balancing actually existed. It doesn’t exist because of managment poilitics making money: we bring out new class? Make it OP for few months so everyone buys xpac. This happens in EVERY SINGLE online game out there that adds new characters/champions/classes. Risk/reward balancing really needs to happen but sadly it won’t as Anet is a company and they want to make money; they do not care weither we find game combat fair or not.

just make mesmer blind avoidable… blinds are really not THAT broken and don’t need changing; you don’t even need condi removal for them….
at least for me they are least of the issue compared to things like burning, daze spam etc.
i know you (warriors) have issues with blinds but frankly if there was close to no counters to your animations they would have to nerf your surivival by a lot… the reason why you have such high HP pool and a lot of (passive) defensives is because warrior attacks are fairly counterable… remove counters and your class will have to suffer from it if anything~
same reason why i laugh @ people asking to give initiative to other classes and make their spammable… because if anet did it they would have to nerf effectivness of initiative based spells by a lot….

The real questions are a bit mean but probably are the root to the issue. Will an experienced thief who does not overextend have issues with survivability? If your glass and you miss your burst and get punished is that really an issue of a 2,000-3,000 hp?
Imho their isn’t an issue on this class but most of the others. In a burst meta the burst class is king. A well played thief will down anything he or she likes including other thieves. to say, “This class needs a buff!” in this meta without considering the others is a bit silly.
What needs to be toned down is the burst. It will promote more counter play for just about everyone.
arguable…. i do not enjoy current 1-shot meta but nether i enjoyed last meta where it took ages to kill celestial classes (if sometimes impossible when they chained their skills)
i agree dmg is high atm, from everyone and needs to be toned down but what really needs to happen is ALL classes should have same risk vs reward correlation
what was wrong with last meta? bruiser being too bunkery while dishing out too much dmg

Problem is: anet doesn’t see balance the way we see it. For them balance mostlikely is: oh this class is underplayed, let’s throw some buffs. Oh this class is played a lot let’s throw some nerfs. Oh, we are adding new class that might not have a job because of the existing classes? Let’s nerf those classes. Plus there are those privat skype messages from few biased top players that actually reach devs.

Dear diary,
when we (TEEF guild) were running spam event, i ended up fighting condi ranger in clocktower, the fight went ok untill wild ele appeared and i went down….
I thought: “Well, i am not gonna give you easy stomps”. So before ranger stomp animation ended i ported to balcony for fun… to my surprise they didn’t follow me nor tried to dps me… those 2 just stood at mid of clocktower… Then it hit me: they actually didn’t know where i was! So i tried to rez myself, eventually they finally saw me and rushed to my downed body trying to stomp me once again.
By that time however my downstate teleport was back. So before ranger could finish his stomp i ported on the edge of the clocktower roof just above the ranger. He stood there for a while doing nothing. Eeventually wild guard appeard and saw me and dropped fire field on top of my (still :<) downed body while allowed ranger to finally realize where i was. “CHEATER!!!!” yelled ranger. Oh how much would i give for /facepalm emote in this game.
I thought my fate was sealed, 3 enemies, one of them would for sure teleport/run to the roof and finish me. Nope. None of them did. I actually finally managed to get up lol. It wouldn’t surprise me if that ranger actually reported me for hacking xD

First I’d like to say I don’t play thief all that much, though I have one at 80. And the reason is exactly what the OP is talking about. It’s so cheesy. I think thieves shouldn’t get to disengage and re-engage combat as they choose. Opening burst is fine, ambushing players is fine. But doing it continuously until your opponent finally gets bored or messes up is dumb.
I also think that in toning this down, the game will stabilize more. Right now, thieves are balanced around on demand, nigh permanent stealth. While I don’t know how one should go about balancing the constant disengaging, without it thieves would surely get buffs in other areas. Maybe a tanky thief, one with lifesteal and plenty of evades, could be built. Condi, support, etc could be buffed to compensate. I know personally I’d love to play a thief that didn’t HAVE to rely so much on stealth.
You do know there are plenty of ways to stop thief from stealthing. Besides stealth in pvp means you just won the point….
Please tell me on which facts or information is your claim based that thieves are balanced around perma stealth? Revealed still exists btw, anti-stealth spells/traits were added too.
Game stabilize? Game is instabile for many reasons but i am sure thieves are not the main reason (judging by pvp/wvw/general discussion forums). What choice does thief have besides “disengaging”? Thieves would never get trade off buffs in any areas judging by every single patch brought up by devs so far. Also, let’s assume anet does remove stealth and buff thieves surival, wouldn’t it just make them guardians/wars?
There is thief build that doesn’t rely on stealth, acro sd, you can play that. If you dislike stealth gameplay you probably are playing wrong class generally. Nobody forces you to play it, really. Should the class be completely redesigned because you don’t enjoy it and want them to be second warriors?… oh cmon now.

We actually did that TEEF event and spammed spells. It turned out spamming same spells actually gets you killed most of the time so it is not advisable.
I think the real reason why people think we are pamming HS is because:
- stealth combo requires HS
- enemy got low HP? What is better spell to use? Same thing for warrior: why shouldn’t i use final thrust when i see enemy low.
- HS is hands down one of the best horizontal gap closers in game. Given that thief mobility is not so great outside of suing actual spells i can see where HS spam is comming from.
While thief does use HS for different reasons, the outsider just sees HS spam hence the qq.

Why do you get hit by that 16k dmg? Are you not capable of hitting dodge? Use blinds? Invuls? Blocks? Any defensives your class has to offer? You know at least by the time thief got CnD off and has decent Hp left it is safe to assume they will try to backstab you in next 1-3 sec.
You know why every thief runs dp? Because every other weapon set got nerfed to the ground and is hardly viable in competitive pvp and now in roaming as well. And you know why those got nerfed so much? Because of clueless complains like your post.
Actual fact: not every dp runs SA, SE or regen from SA. I don’t run SA, for example. Besides that regen and SE got nerfed pretty hard actually so idk what the QQ is about.
Actual fact: SE doesn’t clear all condis. SE also clears only 1 condi every 3 sec, meaning if thief has something like 5 condis on them they would have to sit for something like 15 sec in stealth. Same gors for getting Hp back to 100%. To achive such duration of stealth thief nowdays has to blow refuge which is a bull eye for every aoe possible or try to stack well times BP+HS + blinding powder, but once again BP is a bull eye, use aoe man… or just even stand next to it – chances are that thief stacking stealth will hit you with HS and reveal themself.
I agree on this fact. Balance will be always off. Perfect balance is not possible with so many variables. Nobody forces you to play w/e way you think you are forced to.
God Mode? Where? As far as i am aware, no class in this game has endless HP, endless heals, perma invul and 1 shot button.

Oh ofc you will see less people complain about stealth from thieves because class will simply be deleted from any competitive area of this game. If you didn’t know yet thieves don’t have any ways to mitigate dmg. They can either evade OR exclusively go in stealth, but not actually take dmg. Fyi, the evade builds were nerfed pretty hard, nerf stealth and you will basically have eles spamming auto attack, having 0 heals and 0 protection.
People won’t complain about bp/hs removal. They will simply quit game or switch to other class and will still beat you. Then you will just move to to cry about those classes. I have high suspection that a lot of thieves reroll mesmers atm because that class is really strong atm while thieves got hit hard (again… Anet, you guys srsly are getting boring with all that nerfing, get creative for once).
So basically anyone who beat you is bottom dweller? Oh oh. What does it make you?

Glass thief has 11k HP, shatter does 13k dmg. Thieves have no invuls, they have to go in melee to burst and their dazes don’t do dmg. Do i really need to say more?
The way thieves play they always add in a fight with their superior mobility so by the time you got them on you’re back those shatters are probably already on cooldown.
Im done here if helset and other top players agree with you by all means nerf it.

@Stcker: i am not arguing that mesmers need some toning down, but i don’t think that blind from shatter needs to be removed. Mesmers do have to trait for it and if it was avoidable they would actually need to land shatter.
Certanly they can do 4 shatters but smart mes won’t spam those.
I do agree on ICD, but not long one. Not sure if it will help though, because as i said smart mes won’t spam shatters.
I am not worried about ports, mesmers need them as they are squishy bursty class. Invul is questionable, with amount of stealth they have atm i think invul or stealth stacking needs to be close to exclusive.

None of the classes you listed can actually dish as much dmg as current mes in short period of time while having same level of survival/CC/moblity.

How is unavoidable blinding dissepation trivial compared to those?
None of the classes you listed can actually dish as much dmg as current mes in short period of time while having same level of survival/CC/moblity.

Why should you be able to dodge it? the point is to counter an attack.by that logic shadow shot blind shouldn’t be blockable/dodgeable….
and while we are at, why not make all attacks non-dodgeable… wait i have better idea, let’s remove dodge all together!

To tell you the truth, People complaining about the dodge part are oblivious to the real problem.
Fixing dodge would not make a difference. why? All those shatters are INSTANT. So how do you dodge something that you can never tell when will it come?

Make DE a master and Put Blinding Dissipation as A GM
So BD competes with HM, no more full offensive and full defensive builds at the same time.
Shatters can be predicted same way steal can be predicted. It is not easy but possible, especially if you know playstyle of the person you are facing. Given mesmers have more stealth atm but it is kind of limited if they are more offense oriented (which i am refering to atm).

there are plenty of counters to stealth as well as counters to spells that grant stealth

OK even was actually silly. Not many ppl showed up but upside is that i found out that troll builds can be effective (was running sa/acro/trickety sd).

Let’s talk about trait synergy when other classes get good traits baseline~
The joke is, IF other classes were brought to the same level of current mes it would be even more insane. Imagine thieves having invuls, aoe backstabs and multiple ranged stuns dealing dmg on top of it. I play thief and i would hate it.
Mesmers weren’t in bad state pre patch. They did require some experience and skill however, which was a good thing. It rewarded players for good play. I actually loved to have decent mesmer on team.
Now mesmer class rewards bad plays. I am by all means not a good mes and i can roll my face on one right now.
It is bad for everyone: it makes players from other classes quit game/pvp or reroll mesmers and spoils mesmer players. Once nerfs hit the class (and they will one day) we will have same issue as after turrets nerf: bunch of mesmers with high mmr not knowing how to play.

Oh yeah, i am not getting HoT for any of my accounts unless they change their attitude towards the class. I play pvp 99% of the time. Hot already brings little for me. I am not supporting their crappy class politics by giving them my money.

Just to clarify something: meta battle are not necessary 100% best build, in every situations there are better builds…. meta builds just give general idea what works/is effective in most common cases and meets most requirements, kind of like a guidance…. which you can choose to follow or not.
Problem is, anet just keeps nerfing all the good stuff so meeting those requirements becomes harder and limits thieves to literary 1 build which not even that great if you consider other classes.

thieves didn’t get new F ability…… they just can see their steal CD now and don’t have to drop w/e stolen spell to be able to use steal again
new F ability would something like: steal tools: steal random utility spell from enemy

What is the Backstab bug by the way?
whenever you used backstab, no matter if it got blocked, blinded, dodged or if you just hit empty air, it would always reveal you…..

Mesmers are broken. The ones denying it, should really take a look in HoTM around them, see the increase of Mesmers, think its even most played class now in PvP. I wonder why..
Prolly because it takes so much skill..
Or because mesmer was so spat on for so long that noone dared try it. Now that it’s on even footing for once people are giving it a go.
That said my only suggestions to properly shave mesmer is
1. Increase ICD of CS to 10s per target. As it is now it is 5s across the board.
2. PU remove the might from the boons but then decrease the duration of stealth to 3s extra max.
1. mesmers were good in good hands, they simply required some skill before and weren’t faceroll like shoutbow, there were few mesmers on high tier pvp teams
2. they are not on even footing; go roll a thief or a ranger and try to pull same thing you pull on mes atm; i promise you it won’t work

Are people really kittening about the stun/daze effect? kitten bring stun breaker/stability/block/blinds/invul/etc. So basically when you’re stunned, you stand there and let someone burst you. You deal with it the same way you dealt with CC before. What changed? Did they introduced CC in this patch?
If the issue is the cooldown/precharge, I can kind of see the issue. If so, make it like the thief’s venom. You can precast it but it only last 30 secs then you have to cast it again. No ICD between charges and CD starts after cast just like venoms.
clearly every class has plentora of stab/stun breakers on low CD………
Just one stunbreaker is all you need because if you eat anymore past that guess what?

um, idk what build you play but i can get at least 3 dazes off on my mes, that besides knockback from GS and immob from s/t; oh and don’t forget that opponent also has to dodge shatters
