there’s no point being stealthy if the other players can see the giant looming house basically saying ‘im right here, hit me with an aoe!!’
SR gives you very long stealth duration (compare it to blinding powder – only 3 sec of stealth), and nice healing, but opponents can see where about you are. Seems like a fair trade.
And please, don’t post things here that aren’t even remotely related to bugs.
About flanking strike – if you are very close, you jump right begind your target , and if you keep distance, you jump to its side – test it in Mists on training golems. It’s a move designed to counter aggressive melee fighters, not to chase somebody, like heartseeker.
So yeah, if you don’t end up behind your target, you are doing it wrong.
Yeah, “endgame” isn’t just about collecting items, like it is in WoW – get max level asap, and keep raiding to get every possible gear pieces untill next patch, when you go farm another set.
When you enter a low level area, your level gets scaled down. You can complete missing heart quests, events, explore map, and the most important – know the lore. If you read Ghosts of Ascalon, lore exploring becomes even more interesting, especially in Fields of Ruin. It took me over 6 hours of gameplay to fully explore this single arena on a map, and I am not talking about discovering vistas, and points of intrests. Tbh, I am not even sure if I explored everything.
Now, look at map how many other places, even more rich in lore are worth exploring.
Ramethzero, the only advantage of humans fighting against wild animals is brain. But I can agree, that humans have a strong body structure (I read somewhere, that proportionally, humans are stronger than horses).
I think, that norns are overall stronger and more agile, but charr have sharp claws and can effectively bite.
In a duel, it would be pure skill test, without race advantage factor.

Lols, some wounds may be so deep, that you could run out of saliva. This is what I call “serious injury”.
Besides, you can’t really lick body parts, that you are missing.
Who needs patch notes, when we have so good scouts, who can discover a ninja nerf like 3 minutes after introducing it?
Daendurfuture patch notes could be: “We changed something. Guess what.”
+1 , this gave me a smile
Yes, you don’t need to heal lacerations with magic, but spells make it much quicker and effective.
If a charr got seriously injured in a fight, or has some kind of lethal illness, who would help them? Is there a healer in every warband, or are there warbands made of healers? Do charr use magic to heal wounds and illnesses?
Who needs GW2 to become e-sport star, and why? It is a great RPG game.
What exactly DOES happen when a bunch of thieves stack up and spam blinding powder on each other?
They become overpowdered.
We just need to wait, when (bad) people will learn how to play other (their) classes. But honestly, I can already see complains about every other class, what means this game is balanced pretty well.
He said, that he achieved a perma stealth. Where did he wrote, that he is using it for PvP, PvE or anything?
PS: you can actually use it in dungeons to skip trash mobs.
Thank you, Oracle Fefe.
People found thieves OP, because they are designed for bursting down a single target, while having high mobility. It’s easier to kill and run as a thief than doing the same on any other class.
Most people’s vision of PvP is locking a target, clicking buttons and watching it die. In GW2, you also have objectives, combo fields/finishers (you can do ridiculous things with these), hard AoE CC, revives, etc. You won’t win a match by compiling a team made of 5 glass cannon thieves, will you? Even if you somehow win, next time you will get destroyed by a balanced team using all possible weapons supported by GW2 game design.
I love fighting thieves overusing LDB, they are so predictable and easy to dodge. Not to mention how easy is to clear bleed condition and negate their entire damage.
My thief is ridiculously overpowered.
I can kill in basically 1 round of combat, any class.
I can stay in stealth, essentially forever.
I can out run, any class.
I can escape, any class.
People defending this profession as not OP are trolling.
You can do these things without worries only when fighting terrible to medicore skilled people, whose prediction skills are below AI’s level.
It was obviously a mesmer disguised as a thief, who used some burst skill imitating a smoke bomb. The mesmer wasn’t downed, it was just your imagination.
4. The npc thieves have the same stats you have, or relatively close. For example, a defensive thief using thief guild will generate two npcs that are relatively tanky, but lacking in dps.
Can you link a source of this information?
Redscope1.If you get far enough away, do they disappear?
2.Can the thief get out of combat while they keep someone else in?
3.Will they change targets with the thief?
4.Is their power based off the thief’s power?
1. No.
2. I don’t know, but it’s hard to execute, because they follow you.
3. Yes, they change target with the thief.
4. I don’t know, but I don’t think they would scale with anything except level.
Maybe change the profession name to “rouge”, so people won’t complain about thieves any more?
Any ability to just instagib someone shouldnt be in the game.
Correction:
“Any ability <used by a glass cannon> to just instagib <another glass cannon or unskilled/undergeared/underleveled player> shouldnt be in the game.”
- Why?
I’m surprised you would focus your build to perform more than one task by using shadow trap. I’d focus on my own safety first and defeating my opponents first before defending nodes. Otherwise, I’d go pure defensive utility skills if I focus solely on defense.
Shadow trap is high risk – high reward ability. You can save a day with it, or waste a skill slot. Risk dramatically decreases, when you begin to tactically plan your moves. Tactical thinking is hard, and often requires use of teammates. For me, it’s one of the most powerful abilities in thief’s inventory. Sure, sometimes I waste it’s potential, but in most games it gives me huge advantages.
ZLEcastille@,the only problem with Shadow Trap is that you have 3 UI slots.
If 1 is Shadow Trap,2 is Caltrops ,3 would be either Stun Breaker OR Shadow Refuge.Imo both Shadow Refuge or the Stun breaker(Roll for Ini,or Shadowstep) are far more important and useful that Shadow Trap.
Shadow refuge or shadowstep won’t teleport you across a map behind someone’s back, who just began to ninja a base. But if you just run around killing random people, then shadow trap (and traps in general) is inferior to pretty much any other skill you can choose.
BTW. you can have built-in stun breaker from sword in main hand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_the_militaries_of_ancient_Greece
Since charr army contains both males and females, there could be made hetero bounds (hom_o are also viable). But since they are all ferocious soldiers, or at least militiant civilians, they won’t walk around hand in hand.

questionIf I put it on top of a tower, and jump down, if it gets triggered, will I teleport all the way up to the top?
No, you won’t get teleported while falling. You can’t shadowstep (this trap uses shadowstep mechanism), if you jump on some rock or anything, where you can’t walk back without falling or jumping. This trap has lower range than mesmer’s teleportation, but you can jump between bases in sPvP. Sadly, not between all bases, because some of them are too far away to each other, so you must keep right distance to make it work. Still, the trap is invisible and has infinite duration, unlike mesmer’s teleport.
Also, does the person who trigger it get some signal that he triggered a trap?
No, they won’t see any signals. They will just see you entering stealth, but nothing more. Experienced player (what means – almost nobody) can assume, that the thief used shadow trap, but he can’t know where and who triggered it, unless you are fighting 1 vs 1 on an open field in WvW.
I think I’ll start using it in WvW anyway to get away from enemies.
Yeah, even if you can’t use it at range, still it provides 5 seconds of stealth in melee, what gives you enough time to run away.
(edited by Dagins.5163)
In WvW I don’t think traps are of any use. You can find some lonely opponents every now and then, but for general use traps aren’t that great here.
Traps are tactical tools. They aren’t very effective in straight open fights. You should lure an opponent into them, which increases their power, because they are off cooldown already, so you can make a combo. If you have scorpion wire just to force an enemy to enter the trap, it is a waste of skill slot.
You can place a trap in a tight corridor, and use them for safe escape when things are getting worse – or make it impossible for your enemy to escape that way. Imagine someone running away with 5% hp, and suddenly triggering a needle or tripwire trap placed at a doorway. I managed to do this many times.
Traps are like spider’s web. Spider won’t start to weave it’s web just when he saw a fly. Spider will place it on a spot, which will be crossed by a fly in close future. Also, they know exactly where to place them, what makes them so deadly.

Infiltrators strike:
Its shadow return sometimes doesn’t teleport. The player remains in place, what leads to death in many cases. Sadly, I don’t know how to test this bug.
Okay, I managed to pull of this bug in sPvP on an elementalist yesterday.
It seems, that when the targed has some kind of invulnerability, infiltrator’s strike skill doesn’t change into shadow return. I don’t know if it can be done with simple evade, because it’s hard to test. That means, you can jump to the target 2 times in a row. It might have some special use, but in general it’s very bad thing.
At first I wanted to comment some points of yours, but then I realized how pointless these complains are. Arena Net didn’t make this game exclusively for you. I like its design, as many other players do. But if you don’t – leave it and pick some other game. However, I suggest you to adapt istead, and explore it deeper, because PvP in GW2 is awesome. You don’t have to maximize damage to be any useful. Of course, it’s the easiest way to play a thief, but it isn’t the only option.
Yeah, I dare to say it – “instagib backstab spec” is easy and plain way to play a thief.
Invent your own effective playstyle, maybe based around traps and tricks, and I guarantee you tons of satisfaction.
It removes one condition for up to 5 allies (AoE cap) around you, including yourself.
Best beginner’s build for PvE – sword/pistol. Traits doesn’t matter.
For sPvP – I don’t know, whatever you like. Maybe pistol/pistol with critical strikes/deadly arts traits.
This skill is actually meant for fights, where you nuke a single target with many people. If they can do, let’s say, 100k damage in 5 seconds (boss fight), 2 quick body shots give 10 000 damage for 6 initiative from a safe AoE-free distance.
So, this skill has some use, but I don’t like it so much either. Anyway, thief need some kind of reliable vulnerability without traiting for it, so there must be a skill like this one.

In sPvP, I use shadow and ambush traps, with shadow refuge. How do I work?
- Capture a point and place both traps on the same spot (don’t move while placing them, so an enemy passing by will trigger both of them at the same time).
- Help taking another point with your team.
- When some ninja comes to capture the point, you get instantly teleported to shadow trap, and summoned thief will come to you like 5 seconds later (they are fast runners ;p).
- Gz, you just saved a point from being even neutralized. Proceed to kill the foe with Thieves guild + 2 additional thieves from ambush traps, and win the game for your team.
Facts about shadow trap:
- It has VERY long teleport range. I guess it is like 4000 units.
- Its effect cannot be mitigated by dodging, jumping over, triggering by a minion or anything (unlike needle and tripwire traps).
- Even if you are too far away from it to teleport, or you just can’t get there because of falling or jumping, you still gain stealth.
- It can be placed in the middle of combat right under enemies feets for instant 5 sec stealth. Be it defensive or offensive tactic.
- Shadow trap can save your life or totally backfire. Few times I got teleported away just a second before stomping defeated player, what saved his life. Another time, I got teleported + stealthed away while being downed, 1 sec before getting stoped. I imagine that guy was surprised and mad at the same time. Funny thing. And yeah, that guy which triggered trap didn’t even saw me, and walked away like nothing happened, allowing me to regenerate health to 100% in peace.
Facts about ambush trap:
- You can have 2 thieves summoned at the same time by this trap – they have randomly pistols or daggers.
- Its effect cannot be mitigated by dodging, jumping over, triggering by a minion or anything (unlike needle and tripwire traps).
- Few times some stupid mesmer casted Moa on the summoned thief – he kept fighting normally, but with other abilities… lol. These thieves can “eat” some combos instead of you.
- You can apply to the thief a venom by venomous aura, so it increases this perk’s effectiveness by 100%.
You should plant all traps before fight, so you can use them twice for extra power. Well, sometimes it is impossible, but try to predict your enemies’ moves.

Take a break from forums, ignore people in game, and calm down. Nobody from Anet should touch this topic before announcing official changes, only because of your personal emotions.
DevildocDagins if you ever read any of my posts, you’d understand that the skill was meant for burst damage, not as a defensive skill.
The evasion was added in as an afterthought late in beta because rooted thieves were being blown up while trying to use the skill.
I don’t care how this skill looked in past. However, I do care how it looks right now.
If you are getting blown up during root time (3sec?) in this patch, you probably have a glass cannon build, while also jumping on many opponents at the same time – what means you are doing it wrong.
This is actually very easy to explain. It’s not bugged, because otherwise it would be no.1 thing to fix during beta, and it would require only a few lines of code to implement – quick and easy. Getting hit during stealth is very “visible”, and devs don’t even need reports to know it.
Most important rule about balance in games – don’t use argument “in real world”.
Stealth is used for sneak attacks and escapes. Thieves (especially glass cannons) using C&D or <Hide in shadows> as a shield to mitigate channeled hits or bouncing AoE strikes would be totally OP. Our PvP and PvE would be needed to be balanced around this feature. It means, that we were forced to use dagger in off hand and <hide in shadows> as a healing ability, because it would protect from big amounts of damage. Being forced to a certain build isn’t fun at all.
Plus the whole stealth aspect of the class isn’t suited to a fat clunky Norn.
You know, that you can play thief without using a single stealth skill? Short bow, off hand pistol, and <withdraw> or <signet of malice> healing skills don’t have it built in. Stealth is awesome, but optional.
xChanneled and bouncing abilities still hitting while in stealth.
Stealth isn’t designed to protect from this kind of abilities. It would be absurdly OP.
traps being visible to enemy players
Traps are visible for only a few seconds, after this period of time enemies can’t see them, but many players have an ability to remember where the trap was placed.
stealth with C&D my character remains entirely visible for me,despite that i am in Stealth(i have the icon,my passives in stealth are working)
I can confirm this, very annoying.

Who said, that thieves must be slim and small?
Anonymity — My talents lie in the art of stealth, infiltration, and escape. I do not draw attention to myself. To protect my identity, I hide my face behind a mask of darkness.
Subterfuge — A mask draws attention, and an uncovered face allows people to identify you. I prefer a more subtle subterfuge. A drawn hood lets me blend into the crowd, and no one knows I was there.Determination — I mean business. I’m the bruiser, the muscle, the bear you don’t want to poke. My headband keeps my vision clear, no matter how physical I get.
This one can perfectly describe a fat norn or charr.

Your entire complains are countered by the fact, that PW has built-in evasion and an interrupt. It’s a semi defensive skill, and its defensive part is untouched. If you don’t bother to read, then don’t bother to answer with non-sense answers like this.
We should use PW as a semi-defensive skill, with 0.75s of doing nothing except getting the damage that we’re already taking, then a stun of 0.5s, then an evade that roots us in place.
[ ] Smart way to defend ourselves.
I actually read the first post, but didn’t bother reading next peoples walls of text.
You compared damage from PW and auto attack.
My point is, that you don’t use PW only for damage, but also for defence – therefore it has a special place on skill bar.
Now, please show me which part of those two sentences is nonsense.
Many times my C&D got blocked by a random (or not) PW, or an ability with similar mechanic, resulting in losing: 6 initiative, stealth (which heals and cures conditions), damage.
Not to mention, that my face got smacked pretty bad by these sword swings. Root is important for balance. PW is a hard counter to some moves.

I had a wallet on my desk in front of computer. When I was dueling a good thief in sPvP, my wallet suddenly disappeard. Do you have any ideas where it could go?
Thieves have low armor and health pool, but their defense is great when it comes to evasion and sort of active damage mitigation.
If you find yourself squishy and dying too easy from mobs, try to get pistol off hand and sword main hand, and use 5th skill – black powder. When mobs stand in this tiny smoke cloud, they miss all the time, dealing zero damage to anybody. Also, 3rd skill in this weapon combination is very useful – pistol whip – because it deals very high damage, and while channeling these blade swings, you evade every attack in front of you.
You can also plant a shadow trap at cliffs edge, so when you fall down, and somebody chase you there, you get teleported back, but also got free 5 sec stealth without need of having sword in main hand.
When distance is too far to get teleported, you still have stealth.
ElowinQ. I’m always running out of ‘initiative’. How does one deal with this fact of life since faster recovery is not possible?
It’s normal, that you run out of initiative when using weapon skills. Other classes have cooldowns, but thieves have “energy”, so you can chain same ability many times in a row to burst down an opponent. If you look at traits, there are some perks, which give you back initiative under some conditions, for example:
- while activating a signet (Precision),
- while entering stealth (Shadow arts),
- attacking with first weapon skill (Trickery),
- passive initiative regeneration or while swapping weapons in combat (Acrobatics).
Still, they are pretty much optional, and you don’t have to take them at all costs.
PS: you don’t need to delete your posts every time it’s answered. Some other people might need help and read it.
He got melted down after taking like 4 AUTO ATTACKS, and you are still trying to help him? What else will kill you tomorrow? a bacteria or sneeze?
Use Ambush trap. It boosts damage greatly as long as your thief doesn’t die instantly. He can also hold aggro.
If you don’t know how something specific works, google it. If you can’t find it, ask – even if the topic will end after first answer made of one sentence. You can even made a collective topic called “newbie questions”, and update it frequently with new entries.
I would rather melt instantly from 3 hits, than slowly die from 300 stabs, where in both cases I wasn’t able to survive anyway – like it was in WoW.
If I am bad, and not able to predict my opponents moves, I deserve to be instagibbed.
If I am using a well prepared tactic, which is also quite tricky to execute, I deserve to one-shot clueless newbie.
There is a counter-tactic to every tactic. Get better in overcoming weaknesses, and expanding strengths. Sometimes the best tactic is just to run away, or call for help. There is nothing wrong with it.
