I agree that self-harming utility skills are bogus. Whatever novelty the corruption mechanic may have held once, it’s an unfair disadvantage in today’s game. There is NO bonus power.

Of course they have a disadvantage. They are used as balancing factors. Without the condi their cd shoots up. You can quite easily ignore the disadvantage though.

You want to eliminate variation on the class that is entirely designed around variation.

You dont want to play engie anymore.

Engie has no cooldown between accessing it’s skills. That is its design. Every concept from kits to toolbelt revolves around this. To add cooldown is to make something that is not engie. The 10 weapons swap cooldown is not engie.

You are starting to sound like the people who want revenant to have control over their utilities.

Revs right now are one of the top dps/support/tanky class in the entire game

No, definitely not.
Big Revenant supporter here and I will be maining the class as well, but we have to stay realistic here. DPS is high but still below Elementalists. We have a strong projectile destruction, but unfortunately that is sub-par compared to reflects. We don’t buff as much might as a Phalanx Warrior. We don’t provide stealth, and little weakness and blinds. Even vulnerability which is one of the Revenant’s strongest points isn’t actually worth taking a Revenant over something else.

For fractals and dungeons I don’t see Revenants taking a core slot. Raids are a different story, but we only know 1 boss so far so I don’t know how much point there is discussing that. Then again, we don’t know how the level 51+ fractals will look either.

Revenant is a very strong and versatile class however. But we don’t really bring anything unique other classes can’t bring on top of even more stuff.

Boon duration is quite a lot. Boon on demand is also very interesting. And no, Revenant has the highest DPS in the game versus single targets, but the more support the rev gives, the less is the DPS.

Besides, there is much more than DPS to a meta composition, which is why after the ice bow nerf 2 eles is not going to be meta anymore for old content.

2 eles don’t bring just icebow. They bring fireball +lava font. The nerf hurt thieves more than eles. They won’t be taken anymore because their stealth can be given by a mesmer or an engie.

Mesmer here.

Guardians were taken for reflect and because they out dps mesmers. However with alacrity our community hypothesized the new meta would be 2 ele, 1 chronomancer, 1 warrior, 1 revenant.

The uptime on quickness and alacrity makes for a group that out dps the current meta.

Revenant becomes a half warrior, half guard. Taken for niche stat increases.

The mesmer would be half guard, half thief.

Are the corruption side effects that much of an issue, even with the trait?

  • Consume conditions removes all conditions, and doesn’t put damaging conditions on you.
  • BiP doesn’t hurt physical dps
  • CPC doesn’t stop you from bunkering.
  • Corrupt Boon is not damaged functionally.
  • Epidemic doesn’t hurt condi dps.
  • Plague damages you in ways you can’t feel.

The skills are more powerful than any similar skills in other professions, the corruption are sides effects to balance how powerful the skills are. And you can mitigate the side effects.

For great justice or BiP? Shield of avenger or CPC?

In PvE….where anything works….and the combat is lacking….

I don’t follow? Either you complain that its PvE and that anything works. Or you bring the skills into the other game modes and they are still more powerful but neither is meta.

PvE also lacks boons and condition damage mobs making most of necro design useless there I’m happy you find that flaw benefiting to corruptions but it is still a flaw not taking advantage of the entire system. Try corruptions in PvP and partially WvW and you will see their true value. It’s not even that mobs don’t do damage it’s simply that there is no condition pressure from them.

Yes anything works in PvE.

….I don’t know whether you are for or against them at this point tbh.

Their true value in pvp is quite nice

This is essentially what even seasoned thieves go through. The current balance says that if a thief chooses to engage, be that contesting a point or anything that isnt +1, he’s going to melt. It isnt that the cap is high, its that thief is supposed to be anywhere people are not.

Which is pretty contrary to the whole concept of a thief might I add.

If that’s true, I would say it’s not so much a contradiction of the thief concept, as it is a contradiction of what PvP is. If PvP is largely defined as combat between players, then a class whose primary role is to avoid combat is ill-fitting to that definition.

PvP is obviously not only combat, but combat is the primary determining factor. So a class whose role in combat is diminished is a class that is arguably worth less in casual scenarios. (I imagine competitive, team meta is its own beast entirely).

That is the role they are given. And a role they have held since the beginning of the game. But the usefulness of the role is at ita strongest in casual play.

What would you change? What would you alter to achieve that change?

On the contrary, at the beginning of the game, other professions drop like flies in both sPvP and WvW to a Thief using either D/D or S/D. I know — I was there — it WAS fun while it lasted.

This “+1, decap, and run” nonsense was developed in response to the excessive nerfs that the Thief had received over time.

It wasn’t only the thief who changed . Afterwards mesmer was the only class other than thief that could run berserker successfully and that still remains. Enemies could out sustain your burst that was enough to make mesmers and thieves what they are today, and fresh air and zerker ranger what they are not.

I’d settle with a gear/cog icon

  1. It is consistent with the Scrapper’s circular icon (which happens to look like a sawblade)
  2. It is consistent with tracing the roots of the profession from the Charr iron legion
  3. Our present icon appeals more for demolitions/Crazy Ivan profession
  4. A gear/cog represents the engineer’s ability to set smaller components into motion towards a greater result
(or stated another way, a gear/cog represents the clockwork nature of our profession; we must use our many tools and kits at once to achieve a goal, or else we do not work)

Isn’t the cog taken by the charr racial symbol? I think that’s why they didn’t make Druid a leaf symbol to avoid comparison to the sylvari racial symbol.

Sure all of them except CPC can be ignored, though Plague suicides is a massive case-in-point for why corruptions are badly designed, but that’s still bad, self-harm skills SHOULDN’T have ignorable self-effects, they should be something you have to actively think about every time you cast the skill, with an appropriate power payoff.

And no, CPC is never ignorable. Necro bunkers heavily rely on offensive pressure, because they don’t bring the support of other bunkers. A Necromancer bunker not doing damage is going to lose. So a CPC-weakened Necro bunker will lose out to a spectral/reaper/MM/signet bunker which can all keep up high damage without neutering themselves, while still bunkering.

They aren’t balancing around power builds it seems.

Weapon Swap middle ground

Yes and that is why every utility slot gives you a toolbelt skill. Just as every weapon allows mesmers to summon Illusions.

Quite a poor comparison. The equivalent for mesmers would be shatter skills, not the illusions they get on weapons. Obviously, they do get them because they’re necessary for shatters to work properly.
And other classes get F-skills as well, anyway. Guardians have three signet-like skills, for example. While still having a second weapon set.

Even at your lowest amount you have access to 15 skills on demand. All other professions besides chronomancer do not have access to that many on demand.

For example a thief has access to 11 skills at a time and they require a weapon swap to access the other 5.

Five of which – the weapon skills – are weakened on purpose due to kits, as we know from the balance philosophies.
And toolbelt cooldowns aren’t usually comparable to weapon skills’ ones even when the effects aren’t exactly amazing. So merely reducing it as an amount of skill available at any time isn’t a fair comparison.

That is just how the classes works. Kits give you access to two weapons and the payment is a utility slot. The balance is there, you just don’t like it.

And it works quite badly. They ended up having to balance weapons and utilities over theoretical full kit builds because of how overpowered they could become otherwise (and screwing the builds with few-to-no-kits in doing so) – they even had to balance individual kits over their traited versions until the specialization update (grenade kit says hello). And making it the only class that needs a particular utility type to even process on swap sigils.
The only class that gets fixed drawbacks due to the mere possibility of using a particular utility type, heh.
If warriors got decreased stats because they can use banners to raise them, people would laugh. Engineers having no second weapon slot because of kits instead is treated as normal. Heh.

I see no problem with giving kitless builds a way to proc weapon swap sigils, but I don’t think you should get a true weapon swap. It would simply mess up too much of the class.

As if the class isn’t messed up already, right?
Even if we had such a thing, weapons and utilities would still be balanced over kits. So nothing would change.

I don’t know how to help you. This is class design. Engie is built around around having access to all their skills at once. And having at least one kit. Thief is built around having no cooldown on weapons. Necro is built around having death shroud to subvert the 10 second cooldown on weapon swap. Ele don’t get an additional skill to make up for taking conjured weapons. Neither do warriors for banners.

If you want fixed drawbacks for skill types look at the necromancer corruptions.

If you don’t like my explanation then look at the other commenters in this thread.

It simply isn’t possible to give a true weapon swap without completely reworking the class. All weapons would have to be altered in strength. The toolbelt skills would have to be altered in strength. The kits would have to be altered in strength. Cooldown on kit swaps would be added.

Then maybe Olias with limited minion summoning that explode on Legend swap.

Pyre Fierceshot could have the ability to charm one pet and have pet skills mapped to the Utility slots.

Weapon Swap middle ground

People have secondary mechanics. Mesmers use shatter but they also must use and work with illusions. A mesmer build that doesn’t summon Illusions is just as limited as an engie not equipping one kit.

Yep, that’s why every single weapon the mesmer can equip can generate illusions.
And thus makes sense to balance the class over it – the instruments are always provided to the class, one way or another.
But engineers don’t get kits from weapons and neither have separate kit slots that would make so that there are always kits available.
No, they use up utility slots that other utilities could use as well. They’re optional, and as such should be balanced.

With a single kit an engie has more skills than thieves, rangers, warriors, guardians. Add another they surpass mesmers, necromancers and revenants. Add a third they surpass elementalists. Conjured weapons and banners don’t touch this, they cause the reverse effect in terms of enhancing utility, there are no 4 banner or 4 conjure builds.

If anything, this is exactly why there are issues.
How can you expect them to balance a class that is able to have the least and the most amount of skills of any class and is able to freely access all of them at any time?
At most, what they can do is to balance for the worst case – multiple weapons, so that they won’t be op. Obviously, that makes the single weapon case very weak.

Can mesmers create/summon demons?

in Lore

Posted by: Daniel Handler.4816

Daniel Handler.4816

The short answer: no.

Mesmers can’t control the mists, and demons are fully sentient beings that have come to form from the mists. Although made of ether, which mesmers do manipulate, they would be too powerful for a Mesmer to create.

Mesmers can create illusions and shells of things, but not actual beings, and if a Mesmer pushes the scope of their power too much, they will harm themselves.

I think somewhere in the lore a Mesmer cloned an army or something and it ended up killing said Mesmer because that was too much power to maintain.

I’m under the impression if they actually created a demon, it might kill them from how much power it would take. They could, potentially, assert some form of dominance over a demon like they can over other beings, though.

Do you think they could work up to it? I always thought it wasn’t the amount of power that killed them but inexperience using that amount of power.

[Angel McCoy] An individual’s level of experience and knowledge affects how effectively she utilizes the magic available to them. For the most part, she can channel magic without fatigue or risk to her health. However, if a person were to stretch too far, say by using an item she’s unfamiliar with or attempting a spell more powerful than what she’s used to, then that person is taking a risk. An uncontrolled spell can do terrible damage. For this reason, most intelligent magic-users stretch carefully into spells and magical items they don’t understand.

scrapper should get weapon swap end of story. As great as hammer is, you HAVE to take kits for range when you use it. Lucky kits are good and we’ve been forced to use them for 3 years anyway, but no utilities should be mandatory

If that occurred then non scrappers would never get weapons swap.

and??

thats the point. you can give baseline engi weapon swap if you want, doesnt matter, but the opton of rifle/ pistol doesnt exactly scream we need this

Then it wouldn’t solve the problem of not having a default ability to activate weapon swap sigil. It would be like discovering the cure for cancer but making it cost 1 million dollars. Whats the point of fixing something if you make the fix select.

Too variable to really theorize, IMHO. If you want to do something in RP, then you gotta explain why you can.

I would argue that a ranger could not speak to animals any more than anyone else could, nor could they train their pets to transmit empathetic messages. This does not, however, mean that they couldn’t train their pets to react to specific phrases in a certain way – no different than animal trainers in reality. Nor does this prevent finding a magic that could allow an empathetic bond (such as via a third party mesmer).

Could one justify a telepathic revenant given that Glint is telepathic?

What if I said the ranger was using nature magic to develop a bond? Would I have to use nature magic?

Lol, you call that insight? I call it blatant misrepresentations of reality. We’ve all done the math, seen the math, played the class, done the bursts, experienced the reality. We know you’re full of it. We don’t have to provide proof, we just have to sit here laughing at you.

Since you like analogies, here’s one. This would be as if you went to a cosmetic surgery conference, say on hair transplant surgery. You somehow snuck in the back door and made it on stage. Then you gave a 20 minute presentation about how everyone has been doing it wrong, and the proper tools of hair transplant surgery are a rusty nail to create sites, and a steak knife to harvest the donor grafts. Then when all the other doctors called you on your bull, you cried “THE BURDEN OF PROOF IS ON YOU TO PROVE THAT I’M WRONG!!!!1111”.

Ridiculous.

According to Gw1

Demons are more than creatures of the Mists—they are made from the Mists themselves, bits of etheric matter that have gained malignant sentience and power

Is this why Mesmers never create permanent entities?

What do revenants see while blindfolded?

I’d actually imagine a ritualist/revenant’s sight – while blindfolded or simply blind – to be akin to Neo’s vision in the Matrix – just replace the streams of numbers and symbols with lines of magic.

Also:

  • Necromancers can’t sense life force so much as better utilize it than other professions.
  • Mesmers can’t so much sense the framework of magic. From past discussion you’re still taking Kasmeer’s knowledge of the Tower of Nightmares as meaning mesmers can sense all magic, but that was just Kasmeer recognizing another mesmer’s handiwork – no different than Marjory being capable of telling if anothers’ magic is necromantic or not.
  • Nothing says thieves have enhanced – magically or otherwise – proprioception or balance.

All cases that you seem to be based off of – from past discussions – is just a magic user recognizing their professions’ magic. No different than an archeologist knowledgeable in the Mayan language recognizing Mayan writing in a museum.

Actually the first and the third are based off of canon. Only the second is based off an assumption from the ToN event.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Into_the_Labyrinth
“Okay. I’m okay. If I can just concentrate, I can sense life force. It’s not strong or reliable, but maybe I can get us to Kasmeer and the others before it’s too late.”

For thieves I drew the connection because enchanced physical ability is enhanced proprioception and balance. You can’t exactly have increased agility without the former. This isn’t so much a lore thing but a biological thing.

But that isn’t important.

I was wondering if there were any passive aspects you would expect each class to have?
Like if elementalists can tell the weather.

I could not handle one more button when they added F5, I had to drop my push-to-talk key. Now I’m all out, and no, you should not have to run with a 12-key mouse to play Engineer.

q,e,z,x,c,f1,f2,f3,f4,f5,`,capslock
adding shift to any of these button you cannot be out? And I use those for maining mesmer, so I had just as many buttons as you with f5 being added. If chromancers can adapt to having the same number of buttons as engie. Then engie can get 1 more button.

Palawa Joko
Turai Ossa
King Doric/Adelburn/(prince) Rurik
Undead Lich(Vizier Khilbron)
Master Togo

These are the ones I think they will choose from. Not necessarily all of them.

You are picking people who either were a profession that exists now in the game. Or you are picking people that were a profession that no longer exists in the game as part of balance/design choices.

I am pretty sure they will never use anyone on your list.

Next time don’t pick humans, and don’t pick things that have professions.
Shiro is the closest you will ever get to something like this, and he doesn’t use soley assasin magic. He is not a thief. All of your other choices are indistinguishable from things we already have.

Shiro tagachi was basically an assassin in gw1. Jalis is most likely a warrior. I don’t see why they wouldn’t work.

Because we don’t have assasins in gw2, we have thieves. And the thieves we do have have don’t have divine jade wind magic.

All the other choices are humans, or were humans. They all perform magic that either this game left out intentionally or is part of an actual class in gw2.

Channeling a lich will give you necromancer powers. You aren’t going to get that.
Channeling a human warrior/elementalist will give you the powers of those classes, thats a no too.
Channling togo will give you ritualist powers, they left that class out of this game purposefully.

It doesn’t matter whether the person you channel is alive or dead. The thing that matters is that it is something that is uncomparable to a current aspect of the game.

Assasin
Dwarf
Dragon
Centaur
Demon

You are using the capabilities of each stance that did not come from a profession. Shiros ablities are classed as monster skills.

Prince
King
Vizier/Lich
Warmarshal

You don’t channel the powers of their professions, you channel the power of themselves by taking characteristics of each person. For example, I checked the wiki and king jalis was indeed a warrior in GW1. If your theory is correct, then he shouldn’t have been a legend. He exists because they took the characteristics of king jalis and incorporated it into the game.

Im confused. Are you quoting me? Because as you can see
“You are using the capabilities of each stance that did not come from a profession. Shiros ablities are classed as monster skills.”

My theory is that we channel individuals for their non profession abilities.

The entire list OP suggested is filled with people who only had access to profession abilites. They had nothing special to them beyond their profession.

A lich is a glorified necromancer. You wont be given necromancer abilities.
Ossa was a warrior. You won’t be given warrior abilities.
Togo was a ritualist. You won’t be given ritualist abilities.

The other humans use magical artifacts that were not their own power.
Do you expect us to summon Magadaer into the world like Ventari’s tablet?

Kits no longer proc weapon swaps. Instead you get an f6 called recharge. It has a 10 second cooldown and when you use it it decreases the cooldown of all skills in the currently equipped weapon or kit by a certain amount. It counts as a toolbelt skill. It would be instant.

Why does veil have such a long CD?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Daniel Handler.4816

Daniel Handler.4816

If veil was only altered to behave like temporal curtain does now, would that be OP?

Something like 2 seconds entry, and .5 every reentry.

With PU and hop hoping that would be 7.5 second the same as MI which it shares a cd with.

Well I’m not an expert in WvW zerg fights, but that actually MAY BE too strong there. If stealth from veil stacked, you could use a couple of mesmers to hide a zerg for 6, 9 or more seconds which would mean complete havoc. You see how efficient portal bombs are there, and the only reason it’s not that common I believe is that it is somewhat difficult to set up. With long zerg-wide stealth, no need for portal bomb, you can just peacefully walk to the enemy backline and destroy them before they realized there was a zerg around.

That is quite easily fixed then.

Have the curtains apply the 2s duration if the parties do not have stealth, and apply the .5 duration of they do.

Boom worst glamour solved.

Temporal enchanter. Move the resistance/superspeed burst to 360 around the mesmer 5 targets.

Boom high potential trait made more awesome.

Keep everything else as is.

Yeah, why bother when they’ll never compete with Chrono/Wells.

Boom, nothing but net.

^Double Boom, two idiom’s in one!

What part of wells competes with anything? You take them for alacrity. Just as glamour would be taken for resistance/super speed. I can’t balance them to outshine alacrity. The second you move back to decoy + blink the the third utility actually is competitive.

..but you wouldn’t take glamours for resistance/super speed

When compared without alls well that ends well or temporal enchanter there is no overwhelming victory by either side.

When compared with those two traits and limiting the available utility slots to 1 there is still no overwhelm victory.

I do in fact take glamours for resistance. When I do a boon storm I like to add 20 seconds of resistance to the mix. In spvp when I run inspiration it’s useful to placing portals and getting out of there.

The only difficultly is feedback and veil which is why I suggested moving their effects.

Glamours are in the same basket as consecrations on guardians

What do revenants see while blindfolded?

in Lore

Posted by: Daniel Handler.4816

Daniel Handler.4816

Canthans and norn both use the terms “spirit realm” and “spirit world” interchangeably and both refer to the place where spirits reside – and on occasion, it’s simply called The Mists.

Going off of Weh no Su lore and instances where the “spirit realm” or “spirit world” are mentioned, part of the Mists seem to overlap – literally – with Tyria and spirits in the world primarily live in this “overlap” if they haven’t moved on to the afterlives like The Underworld (e.g., lost or regret-filled souls). They are capable of hiding in this overlap, thus becoming invisible to – but capable of interacting with – mortals (the entire point of becoming Ascended aka Weh no Su in Factions is because Shiro pretty much did this to our PCs – hid in the spirit realm and killed the PCs).

Ascension allows a mortal to see this overlapping, to some degree. Ritualists – and by appearances, revenants – have taken practices which allow an even lesser version of this.

This overlapping of the Mists and Tyria also appears to be what allows the mursaat to become invisible. The Arah dungeon’s lines of them “slipping between worlds” refers to them entering this place, where mortals shouldn’t normally be capable of accessing (only mortals besides mursaat who can – known to us players at least – are havrouns, and for some reason, Svanir). And like souls, they’d be capable of interacting (just as we can kill risen while “phased out of Tyria” in Arah dungeon’s mursaat path’s final boss, all the while being immune to damage from them – and how similarly the boss can attack us but we cannot attack the boss until we’re also “phased out”). Thus why Ascension was needed to see and fight them.

So by my interpretation, what ritualists and revenants see would be people’s souls and the flow of magic in things. The spirit threads as it’s called in Factions at one point.

What enhanced senses, magical or otherwise, could one draw on for RP, as applied to all 9 profession?

I know that necros can sense lifeforce. Mesmers I think can sense the framework and use of magic. Thieves have magically enhanced proprioception and balance.

Do elementalists know the weather? Can they tell temperature?
Can rangers speak to animals, see and hear through them?
Do guardians feel the light they shape?

Are there any passive abilities to the professions not directly related to enhanced senses, but which might be helpful in RP?

What do revenants see while blindfolded?

in Lore

Posted by: Daniel Handler.4816

Daniel Handler.4816

On ritualists:

From manual: They hood their eyes to better commune with spirits that grant great power and protection to Ritualists and their comrades.

On revenants (all comes from biography):

I fight with my _ blindfold on to shut out the distractions of the physical world and focus my magical inner sight.

Veil Piercer (“veil piercer”) — Form follows function with this blindfold, designed both to cover a revenant’s eyes and help punch through the barriers that conceal the unseen.

Resplendent Curtain (“resplendent curtain”) — The resplendent curtain is for revenants who choose to make a more elegant and stylish impression; because even if they can’t see the world around them, it can still see them.

Based on this and more that’s less obvious, ritualists and revenants both blind themselves to better see into the Mists/Spirit Realm. Basically giving them a weaker version of Ascension/Weh no Su.

So to answer your questions:

No, maybe in a physical sense, only in a magical sense, mesmers either alter reality or mess with the mind itself so in the case of GW1 and ritualists yes because it’s not what’s seen but what’s perceived that’s messed with and in the case of GW2 and revenants yes because illusions are physically there for a time.

Is this the spirit world as we saw with the Norn personal story? I assume they don’t run into things and they aren’t using echolocation.

Edit: I wonder if we could convince the mods to just merge every new whine thread someone posts into some big mega-whine thread so that we don’t have to deal with a new package of drivel every week.

Most of these threads are like a certain immunodeficiency viral infection, not gona name any names. Days may pass without anyone posting anything. Then all of a sudden, its back. Then everyone be like, well kitten.

Fairly bad analogy scientifically but w/e this is the Internet, Pyro could be a Cat for all we know.
