Thank you, I am glad so many of you like my suggestion.

For those of you who don’t like it, you think that getting a legendary is suppose to be grindy, then I would say that would be the wrong direction to move the game towards.

I prefer to have multiple ways to achieve the same end-goal of acquiring a precursor rather than just having legendary luck with the mystic toilet or pulling out a legendary credit card, so that perhaps some of those ways may actually be fun!

Some Guy has Every Legendary , he either A, flipped trade post or B, its bill gates Son ..

The truth is, you don’t even need to be the son of Bill Gates to afford a legendary. Eternity, the most expensive legendary, only costs 735 USD, which is easily affordable for most middle class Americans.

That’s most of a new computer. I don’t know any “middle class” American that would pay that much for a virtual item in a video game when you can get something tangible.

In my experience the people buying legendaries or any other extremely expensive virtual item have more dollars than sense. Not gonna lie, though, I bet it must be nice to have that much expendable income to drop down over 700 dollars on something that disappears when the game inevitably shuts down.

I paid $900+ for a plasma TV a few years ago and it is now outdated. I bet that within 10 years, my TV would depreciate down to $0 and I could only donate it to charity, just like what happened to my Picture-in-Picture Sony Trinitron box TV. GW1 servers, on the other hand, are still running after 10 years.

Why not? Think about it, $735 savings over 3 years is only about $20/month. That is way less than your average cable TV bill and most middle class Americans easily spend more than that on entertainment.

I don’t have cable TV which I consider to be way more expensive than the GW2 gem store, so I might as well spend my money on the gem store for gold.

Furthermore, $735 is only the cost of the most expensive legendary available, instead of the average. The average legendary only costs about $400 which is only about $12/month over 3 years. You also didn’t take into account interest payments and return on investments of your savings over time.

Oh look another original post about from yet another self entitled player that wants everything to be easy for them.

Getting a legendary has always been easy, if you have the money.

The difference is that a TV is a physical object

The problem is, if you think about it, I had a Sony Trinitron, with Picture-in-Picture and the works, which I paid big bucks for many years back but I had to donate it to charity. Why? Because nobody wants a box TV anymore. That is how wasteful buying technology is. So much for spending on a physical object.

Since I don’t play any other games, spending $20/month on my entertainment budget is a small sum, especially since I don’t even have cable TV! I am too busy playing GW2 to watch TV. Do you know how much subscription people actually pay for cable?

Now don’t tell me that most middle class Americans cannot afford cable and don’t spend as much, if not more, on their entertainment.

$735? Wow… I guess I’m more lower class American than I thought then.

I am the only working income in my family… I am married with 2 kids. We are on a fixed income. I would be happy to pay a monthly fee of $15. However, I cannot drop more than that at a given time.

$735 is the equivalent of playing a $15 month game for 4 years.

Naïve people just irritate me.

Or the price of a TV. I bought a small cheap one for $900+ which I found out that I don’t even need one. I assume most middle class people can afford a TV if they save up for 3 years since the game release. You only need to save about $20/month.

Eternity is currently 4900 gold. That is something like 60.000 gems or EUR 750 or USD 1000, from what I can tell right now looking at the trading post.

There is something wrong with your calculation, according to gw2spidy 1g costs only 0.15 USD to buy through gems. So 4900 × 0.15 = only 735 USD.

My GW2 client only presents me with the euros – 5k gold would cost 750 euros. I converted to dollars from there.

Anyway, it’s not about whether you can afford to buy something for 750 dollars (or euros…). I spend a multiple of that each month. On rent. And food. And possibly other things with a practical use, such as car maintenance, insurances, or even a TV.

Other people take out a mortgage and buy a house for 350 000 dollars and for the occasion, that is “affordable”, and they still wouldn’t spend the same money on an in-game item, because that would be completely stupid.

I would not force my monetary values into others by calling it ‘completely stupid’. Afterall, who elected you to offer financial advice to everyone? There are people who are sitting on a lot of money and $735 is small change to them. Just because it is a big deal to you doesn’t necessarily imply that has to be the case for everyone else in the world too.

Oh so you want it to be THAT way …. Doh ho ho ho ho
(only if they finally added that epic solo quest line & scavenger hunt for the EXACT precursor you want, otherwise forget it b/c then almost No one would get the exact Legendary they actually wanted and then no one would be happy)

Didn’t ANet plan to have precursor crafting previously? They really don’t need to. Just make crafted ascended weapons as precursors.

For me, i don’t buy or MF my precursor but there are thousands of players that wasted thousands of gold to acquire their precursor. How is it fair if one day precursor was made into such easy obtainable than it was? But if it is new legendary then the issue will not exist.

And how is that fair to people who have to play the game + level up their crafting level to 500 just to craft an account-bound ascended weapon just to see it worth less than someone who paid for a precursor with his credit card?

So yes, I would say that many middle-class people have and can afford a legendary nowadays.

You DO realize that the amount of real money needed to buy a legendary would be in the realm of hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars, right?

If someone wanted to hand me that sort of smack for some digital pixels… I’d take it, and I’m betting you would too.

Unless you were the spoiled son of an investment banker, you either ground out real life cash or in game gold to buy a legendary.

You do realize that for an average american with a real job that cost of a precursor is not a big deal right?

Even if you take an expensive precursor like Dawn. It only costs 1019g right now which translate to a big big expensive sum of only about $153, which many Americans can earn in less than a day of work.

Even if you take the most expensive legendary right now, Eternity, which is about 4900g, that translates to only about $735, which many Americans can earn within 3 days of work.

Of course not, that would make the entire concept of legendary weapons obsolete. Not to mention kitten off every single player that has spent countless hours farming T6 materials and other resources. Crafting a legendary is SUPPOSED to be the grindiest, most ridiculous thing in game, to give people something to do.

Took me almost two years (I just crafted mine two days ago).

If it is suppose to be the grindiest, then why did ANet allow people to buy it with gold and thus real money? Obviously some people could get them without grinding!

Same thing for precursors, which unlike ascended weapons that are account-bound, you can just buy them off the TP!

All Ascendeds automatically Account bind correct?
That’s probably a good enough reason not to right there…

On the contrary, I think that makes it even more natural for ascended weapons to be precursors. At least you know the guy needs to have 500 crafting level to make his own precursor rather than simply use his credit card.

Only problem with this approach is that it is impossible. lol

Would it still be legendary if everyone has it?

yes because everyone already can have it with a credit card

Legendary is nothing legendary except: Legendary lucky, Legendary no life, Legendary rich

I have to agree with this statement, which was why I created this thread to convince ArenaNet to make the current ascended weapons, natural precursors to their legendary counterparts:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Making-Ascended-Weapons-into-Precursors/first#post4203266

Since so many people already have the money to buy ascended weapons in the game (i.e. you see them almost everywhere), there is no reason to make it even worse for those who choose to craft their way into legendary through crafting a precursor (i.e. hopefully the precursors would be the ascended weapons).

Sure, after all they can be bought by anyone with enough real life money anyway.

Making ascended weapons natural precursors to their legendary counterparts would be a more natural progression than the current exotic precursors.

=o. I agree with Brother Grimm. If getting one legendary were easier, then they wouldn’t be legendary. I myself don’t intend to get one, as a matter of fact, yesterday I gave away “The Chosen” to someone. Maybe if I get lucky again, I’ll give it to you so that you can sell it and get whatever you want.

Getting a legendary has always been much much easier for those who are rich in the real world.

This is not so much a matter of being easy or not. It is simply a matter of how rich you are in real life.

I really hate the current system where I have to wait for a precursor to drop. I wish precursors can be crafted, besides it would make more sense for ascended items to be precursors.

Why can’t we make all the ascended weapons as also precursors for legendary weapons?

It is a more natural progression otherwise I always have to choose between spending all my resources into making an ascended weapon or into making a legendary, which includes paying for a precursor.

3. Players purchasing gems with real world currency will either plateau the ratio of gold to gems or cause it to reverse the upward trend (or so we hope); all depending on how many players choose to purchase gems at any given time.

Unless ArenaNet exercises their ability to control the amount of gold in the economy, which they do.

If it had been 250 Geodes instead of Sand, I’d actually have considered buying it.

Then people would of course again complain against P2W

Win what? Win gold, so that we can win this game?

Oh right….I forgot, we are not suppose to be able to buy gold using real money in this game. It is not like real money can be used to buy gems and then trade the gems for vast amounts of gold or anything right? It is not as if ArenaNet supports the buying of gold with real money ever since BETA right?

If having more gold = win, thank goodness we still can’t P2W in this game!

It is like “Oh No! If people buy this item in the gem store with real money, they would be able to use it to earn some gold and thus win this game!” Yeah right…Now you know how ridiculous those P2W, where win=more gold, arguments sound to me.

Yipp .. thats the logic behind it. Haven’t you read all the P2W complaints about the watchwork pick ?
You pay 100 gold and maybe in 2 years you have earned 110 Gold with that .. thats what some people here call P2W .. lol.

Agree.

Most people don’t seem to understand that the gem-gold exchange rate favor gems as time goes by and they also don’t understand the concept of “Time Value of Money”.

http://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/timevalueofmoney.asp

The upfront cost of paying for a 1000 gems now is going to worth more, in terms of GW2 gold in the future.

Frequently we see new topics popping up from people who complain about the tp and the profits being made by hardcore flippers/traders.

Many people think that it should be limited and be more in line with rewards from other gameplay.

Why should anyone be rewarded doing the things that everyone else wants to do?

If that is how the world works, I want a pay raise and a promotion while I am taking the rest of the year off work too.

You don’t have complete control over the real life but ArenaNet does have complete control over GuildWars 2. So if one of the main goals of the devs is to reward the same amount of skill put into a certain aspect of a game evenly, which I hope it is, then the proposal Wanze has made does in fact compliment this goal. It is a nerf to the traiding post, because you wont be able to trade as much as you’re now. Yet again the nerf to HamBow warriors was, at last, a nerf, yet it compliments the PvP balance. A nerf to the traiding post will be a nerf, that’s for sure. But it will compliment the wealth balance.

If you don’t reward work then nobody would do the work. If nobody does any work then the economy would be in trouble. Discouraging the use of the TP and trading does not necessarily lead to a better game.

Outfits instead of Armours

DarkSpirit.7046

I agree, I don’t understand the validity of making outfits in a game where cosmetic alternations is key. Forcing a player to use the entire armour set instead of min/max feels out of place, especially since you can’t dye individual pieces, would of loved to have only the helm itself.

I myself only use the helm from the primieval set.

I think this preference is subjective. For some people like myself, I rather have free transmutations back and forth between armor, if I have to choose. What would be best if they can have free transmutations like outfits + customizable individual parts like armor pieces but I don’t think that is going to happen.

Another good part is that you can wear it over light, medium, or heavy armor.

There have been plenty of armor pieces that can be worn by any profession. Also, I’m not sure it’s such a nice thing to have heavy armored warriors run around in light clothes. But that’s your own choice I suppose.

Well you were mentioning about the 800 gems armor in the gem store but those are specific to each light, medium, heavy armor weight class, unlike outfits. As far as I know, the “generic” armor that applies to all weight classes are special cases and are not sold in the gem store. Also they are just skins for a piece of armor rather than the whole set.

anet can always make the same armor looking sets for all tier armors. It’s not like they can’t. This would be easier than making 3 different looking armor sets.

I agree, not sure why they don’t but if I have to guess, I would guess it is because they want to earn more from us.

Also yes, the dye process for outfits could have been improved upon. But that is not to say that it shouldn’t remain as an outfit, instead of an armor skin, given the advantages of outfits over armor skins.

My guess is that the item database doesn’t have a field for armor weight. They’d have to go back through, add the field, and classify all the armor items in the database to make it searchable. I suppose the manpower effort required to do that is why it hasn’t been done.

It does have a field for armor weight.

Even without ArenaNet doing anything, you can already do this through the official items api. Take the item and match it against items api through the item id which would give you the weight class if it is an armor. It is called a JOIN on the item id field with data from the TP api and from the official items api, in SQL parlance. My gui app does this.

If I can already do this with the data that ArenaNet provides, I am sure that ArenaNet can easily do this themselves.

Good part about outfits is they don’t need trasmutation stones.

That’s also the only good thing about them. Why would you wear an outfit that only looks ecent if you use the exact dye combination that the developer intended?

Considering that for 800 gems, you get a fully customizable set of armor, 700 gems for an outfit is a ripoff.

Another good part is that you can wear it over light, medium, or heavy armor.

The savings in transmutation stone is quite significant considering the number of pieces of armor. But this comes at a cost of customization.

Outfits are meant to be a cover for your armor, in case you get sick of your character’s look and want a change easily. You don’t have to buy another set of armor to change your appearance back and forth and you don’t need to waste transmutation charges over time.

Watchwork Pick: Why No Response?

DarkSpirit.7046

Eventually someone realized that these gamers would pay more money to play less time if it meant they could catch up to the no-lifers who played more often. So they dropped the subscriptions but offered advantages for cash and “pay to win” was born. Because these games had no sub fee, they attracted the no-lifers who could now play for even less money than the sub-based games, and once committed to the game they realized that those who were willing to pay to play would have an advantage.

This is why there are so many complaints about “pay to win,” and why these complaints don’t stop companies from doing it. They have learned that the sub-based model can only support so many players (most of whom are already committed to WoW), and most sub-based games don’t make enough money to stay afloat. But no matter how much the no-lifers complain about pay-to-win, there are enough people who will open their wallets to compete with those who can play all day, every day to make free to play games profitable.

And in the end, the game company exists to make a profit.

I don’t see anything wrong with that. It is a well-known fact of life that a game company has to make a profit to survive. Who is going to continue to pay the salaries of all the game devs, designers, artists, marketing, etc. employees over time if it keeps losing money? And they have their own families to feed and pay their own bills.

In some ways a sub-based game is more straight-forward. They only need to continue to attract subscribers and not to worry about a cash shop. For a fee-to-play game like GW2, they would need a cash shop. The game is maturing fast and soon it would disappear from the shelves, having been displaced by the hoard of newer games gushing in.

Therefore, they need a way to get a continued flow of income. And what is the best way? Get those players with the money to help them to catch up with the rest for the players with the time. Because the players with the money would want to look as cool and be as strong as everybody else.

On the matter of sprockets, so what if they can get a pick that gives them a random chance of some sprockets. Sprockets only equate to gold and gold equates to gems and gems can always be gotten through money. If any of you think that you deserve to be ahead, in terms of gold, because you have farmed for a long time, then think again because even if the money-rich players do not buy this pick, they have always had the chance to convert their money to gems then to gold at any time. So I really don’t see what is the big deal about this pick, considering that the money-gem-gold route has always existed since the beginning.

The only reason, I can think of, as to why threads like these ones existed for so long is because of the jealousy of players who have bought previous unlimited picks who now try to rile up the crowd in order to pressure ArenaNet into adding new features into their previous purchases. They do this obviously for selfish reasons even though they try to justify it by calling this a “slippery slope” of “pay-2-win” in the game.

Therefore it depends on what you define as “win” in this game. If simply having the most gold in the game is “win”, according to your definition, then it is already “pay-to-win” ever since beta. But simply having the most gold would not guarantee you victories in sPvP tournaments. So every time when someone mentions “pay-to-win” think about what “win” means in his context.

That’s okay, the web sessionId is enough for me. My application just looks up prices. It doesn’t buy or sell so I don’t need the ingame key. Search.json does return a buy and sell price so I won’t need listings.json anymore. Thanks for the help though

That why I said it depends on what you need; the type of application that you want to write.

One thing to watch out for though, even if you are looking at the buy/sell price you have to be aware that there is a caching bug on the TP especially on fast moving items where the buy/sell price obtained from the TP (through search or items.json) is an outdated cached version. Listings.json does not have this problem and buy/sell price without quantity is limited for most usage. You only need 1 crazy buyer or seller to give you the wrong impression on the demand/supply of that item.

It looks like they dropped the use of the “Character GUID.” When I run fiddler I no longer see the Character GUID being passed along with the session ID in the cookies section.

I looked into this because a program I made a few months ago was throwing an authorization error at me when I started it up today. It’s been a few weeks since I used it last.

The other change I noticed is that: tradingpost-live.ncplatform.net has been changed to: tradingpost-dfw-live.ncplatform.net.

Just return an empty string now for character guid. You can still use tradingpost-live.

I must be in the severe minority thinking that the sprocket generation is a good thing. Personally, I’d prefer to see all the other gem store infini-tools get a similar upgrade. Power creep is pervasive in nearly every MMO except GW2 with expansions and other paid content. Adding a very minor benefit to paying customers (which non-paying customers can still cash in on through the gold -> gems exchange) is a small way of saying “thank you for supporting us,” IMO.

As for the financial benefit, this doesn’t hold a candle to the kind of coin people make on daily dungeon raids. I really don’t see this as being detrimental to the economy at all. And it’s not like the tools are going away and only those who already bought them will benefit as we’ve seen with the return of the WW pick.

I’d like to see other time-gated or limited supply mats get the same sort of refresh — azurite, passion flowers, zhaitaffy, etc. When huge supplies of some of these mats are necessary for certain recipes, the idea of farming limited-supply nodes for literally a year or two — especially for the casual player or those who prioritize family over gaming — is prohibitive and discouraging.

I agree with you. I don’t know why MMO people always think that rewards ought to be based on the amount of time you have in real life instead of skills. Time is money and can be bought with money and vice versa.

If you tell me that a specific reward can only be gained with SKILLs then I would agree that it should not be obtainable through gold or money. If, on the other hand, you tell me that this specific reward can be obtained through TIME farming content and so on, then I would say it should be obtainable through money also. Why? Because a working parent is not necessarily less skillful than a non-working person with no real life responsibilities. No real life responsibilities does NOT equate to more skills.

Therefore, why should a person with no real life responsibilities be rewarded more in the game? Time spent in the game, can and should be able to be countered with money. However, skills rewards have and should always be unique. Don’t confuse time-based rewards with skill-based ones.

Once you have your session id, you don’t need your email and password anymore.

If you plan to get the less useful session id from the website, then you need to login using your email and password.

If you plan to get the more useful session id from the game client, you don’t need those. But you would probably need to write a program to access that session id.

Yay! Finally repaired it!

Basically, when you access the login page BEFORE login in, you get a session id in the cookies. You need to login with your email, password AND sessionId. this seems to “bind” the sessionid to your user. You also need to set the path and domain for your cookie -> new Cookie(“s”, _SessionId, “/”, “guildwars2.com”);

@Fossilized Amber : You don’t want to use the sessionId from fiddler since everytime you login, you get a new sessionId. You’ll want to automate the “GetSessionKey” part of your application. You also don’t need to set the time the cookie expires. The response’s cookiecontainer will probably not return a Cookie object but you can retrieve it from Response.Headers[“Set-Cookie”].

Like I have said, there are 2 levels of session ids. The one that you get from the website is the less useful form of session id because it would not allow you to buy items from the TP or see your own transactions. You may not even be able to use that to see the listings.json of each item.

The session id from the client would allow you to do all that and you can see that session id through fiddler when you open the TP dialog in the game.

They are BOTH set in the cookie of your requests. The session id usually remains valid for a long while.

Go ANet go! Those are the kind of items that we need in the gem store – the kind that would makes it worth our while to buy. The rest of the money losing cosmetic stuff in the store are just not as worth it.

I didn’t know that it is totally worth buying until you guys pointed that out on this thread. Now I really want one! Thank you guys for keeping this thread alive! I have not bought any of the infinite tools so, unlike some of you, I don’t feel any pain about this one.

Alright, never have an infinite tool before, but I would buy this one.

The thing is, I AM able to get the sessionId from my application but when I use it to lookup search.json, it get a 401 error.

If I login with a browser and get the session Id from the cookie and skip the whole “GetSessionKey” part of my app, it works.

It’s like my session key expires as soon as I get it or something

You may have extracted the session key wrongly. Make sure the session key you got from the app. exactly matches the one showed in fiddler.

Doesn’t Tamini sound like a new line of sexy swim wear to any of you?

On another note, is it that “weakness makes me sick” or “sickness makes me weak”?

I’m getting the problems with listings.json as well. My Service had been running for months with no problems. Now listings.json doesn’t seem to work anymore. I tried it in my browser and it still throws an Access Denied response. search.json still works though.

Anyone aware of this issue?

I think they made a change to listing.json to also require your game client session key. You can’t use the session key that you get from logging in to their web site.

As for an example with C# source code, you can look here:

Note: I am not Zicore and that is not my code. So, use it at your own risk.

I’ve made my ascended armor for “free” when they where introduced. I stocked all the mats to level up armorsmith to 500 and I sold the 20 exotics i made to buy everything I needed for my armor

Unfortunately, you can’t buy vision crystals or their ingredients, which means they are a necessary grind if you want to craft them.

It took me about 2 months to make the set.

Isn’t that around the time it takes to make a typical legendary?

For my tastes, the worse grind was getting the empyreal and dragonite ore than anything else. I had the time gated stuff done long before those.

Agree, I am suffering from those right now.

Don’t Ascended armor boxes only drop one piece out of the set?

Don’t know, I never got one.

But if that is true then you would hope that it drops the chest piece as that requires a full vision crystal to craft.

Still slowly working towards mine (for 5 characters, no less!), but I see lots of people in the game with Ascended armor skins, so the answer must be yes.

It depends, did they craft them or did they get them as drops (e.g. Fractals)?

The grind has been terrible. 5 lesser vision crystals + 1 full vision crystals (i.e. about 2.5 lesser vision crystals). It took me 2 weekends just to grind out 1 lesser vision crystal and I’m already tired.

The Gold/Gem ratio

Seriously guys, how is this supposed to get fixed?

You assume that is a problem so it should get fixed. But did you ever consider that it may be that way, by design?

Besides it being more profitable for ArenaNet, a higher gem price, also squeezes the profit margins of gold sellers which may just be the most effective way of weeding them out of the system.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/What-s-happening-to-gems/first#post4137559

A high gem price may be bad for you personally, but it is certainly better for ArenaNet. So what makes you think that they would fix it the way that you want it to be fixed?

What's happening to gems?

in Black Lion Trading Co

DarkSpirit.7046

@Dark Spirit – Don’t forget that gold spent on gems is gold that can’t contribute to inflation caused by excessive money supply growth. It doesn’t permanently remove all of it, since that’s what gets paid out when you sell gems, but it’s most certainly acting as control rods in the economy’s reactor.

That is a common excuse to justify having the gold to gems conversion, but I don’t think people who think that has thought this through.

The gold to gem conversion is mainly used to justify the value of their gem store items, not so much as an inflation control mechanism. If, instead of gems, they charge money and price their infinite mining pick at US$10 each, some of you may feel that a mere virtual item should not be worth so much money. But if they turn around and say that it is worth 70g of virtual gold in the game, then you can gauge how much effort is required in the game in order to save up to 70g and translate to a value for the pick.

So as the price of gems go up, the perceived value of their gem store items also go up, without ANet needing to do anything to improve their products, while their cash prices remain the same. This automatically makes their gems more and more attractive to buy for players with cash.

Because a higher gem price improves profit for ArenaNet. Here is why:

1. For people who buy gems with cash: It does not matter much if the gem store items are not desirable because:
a. There is always the opportunity cost to buy gold, so that they can convert gems to gold and use that to buy items from the TP. This becomes an attractive option when gem prices are high.
b. If gem prices are high, paying cash instead of gold for gem store items become a more attractive option.

Therefore, to keep cash flowing into ANet’s coffers, they should keep gem prices high!

The question then becomes, how is ANet going to keep gem prices high and keep their profits rolling in? The answer is from:

2. The people who buy gems with gold. This group of players is important because only they can keep the price of gems going up. So how can ANet motivate this group?
a. Make more attractive gem store items to keep them buying gems. This is an obvious direct route. Keep in mind that the gem store items need to be mainly attractive to this group of players as the group in point 1 above, would still find buying gems with cash attractive as long as gem prices are high regardless of their perceived quality of the gem store items.
b. Give gem store items more unique (i.e. not found anywhere in game) and useful functionality that people want. This is actually a subpoint of ponit a, above.

There 2 levels of session ids.

1. Level 1, you can get by sending your account information to https://account.guildwars2.com.
2. Level 2, gives you level 1 access + more privileges like accessing your own account. You can read it of process memory from your guild wars 2 client itself.

Check up the OP on accessing the TP

You need to be authenticated against their server in order to access the TP data. This will not allow you to access your own account as that would require a session key from the client itself.
