Not everybody would be interested to replay an area that they have already done for 0 rewards.

ANet has to decide if this game is for casual or hardcore players. I will not buy HoT if it is only for hardcore players. They only need to declare it so.

I am an old man with a family and many other real life responsibilities and my reflexes and eyesight are not as good as they were. Gaining 1337 skills in an MMO is about as low in my priority list as it gets. It is mere entertainment to me. Ask me if I want to be a 1337 TV couch potato.

No MMO that hasn’t taken an unholy beating *cough*Wildstar*cough* has declared itself for either camp. They’d be foolish to do so, it limits sales. So I doubt you’ll get your desired declaration from Anet.

OK, look, most times I think of myself as pretty casual (haven’t farmed endless dungeons, haven’t done more than tour the fractals enough to clear each one once, only ascended goodies on my 80s are laurel purchases, etc.) but there comes a point when you have to ask if you’re barking up the right tree. With the exception of the evolved worm, sometimes teq, and a few achievements this game is about as casual friendly as it comes (at least when it comes to seeing storylines and getting through the content once, legendaries are an unmitigated, -unholy- grind, with ascended crafted items being a touch behind them.) I’ve played a few MMOs (WoW, Wildstar, STO, SWTOR, TERA, Allods Online, Prius Online, Foresaken World, and Ragnarok Online,) I can promise you that if this game is too much for you, MMOs are really not going to work out for you.

Then maybe MMOs just doesn’t work out for me anymore and I shouldn’t be playing HoT. I don’t need an answer from ANet because you have already answered it for them. See? I am now old enough to agree with my critics.

I finally completed it with the help of a friend, which kind of defeats the purpose of the living stories being solo-able.

I don’t see why you are dissatisfied. It’s not like the game is impossibly hard, very clearly most people have completed it solo with ease. The problem is not with the difficulty, it’s you being too bad at the game and giving up too fast.

Fortunately ANet provides the alternative option of grouping for less skilled people, so that even in this situation you did not have to give up the game. You should be thankful.

I did LS 2 with achievements on my ele and I know there are plenty of better eles put there. Some things are easier done with specific professions but all are quite doable.

Nope I still can’t pass that level. Guess I am not 1337 enough to play HoT then.

classic Dunning-Kruger. You do not have to be 1337 to beat this in any way, just not very, very bad.

In that case, I am too bad a player to play HoT then. Don’t want to spend $50 and not enjoy the game.

I’m starting to wonder what’s the point of this thread.

The point of this thread is to point out that some players, like me, are just not good enough to play and enjoy HoT.

Get better then, as you seem immune to any advice, this is the best I can give you.

That statement is downright insulting. Some people simply do not have the PHYSICAL ability to do some of those things. There IS no ‘get better’, there may even be ‘get worse’.

Of course. It is impossible to improve. Oh wait.

I have a very bad internet connection, thank you Frontier DSL, and often dies due to lag. Things would stop moving for a few seconds and I’ll be dead or disconnected. Unfortunately, I am on some contract with them until 7/25. After which, I would move to maybe XFinity.

That said, there are too many 1-hit kills in this game.

Kinda hard to give you advice since we can’t see specifically why you are having problems.

Maybe change up your build and try different weapons and strategies.

I completed All S2 with all 8 classes, solo. Make a a playthru video that we can watch and provide feedback.

LOL wouldn’t your first thought to be to try to find help doing it before coming on the forums complaining that something is too hard for you, doing it solo.

I tried solo first because all the personal story quests, like the living story quests, are made for solo. If the content is not meant to be solo-ed, they would warn you when you try to solo them.

Besides, good luck trying to get someone to help you with personal story when they get nothing back in return, not even karma.

Try putting up an LFG asking for help? There are probably other folks who still need to get through that bit too. It is much easier with more than one person. I have solo’d it twice, not too bad on my warrior but it took a LONG time on my thief. Much better with a buddy!

Thanks for the practical advice. I’ll do that. It didn’t take me too long to solo this with my ranger too.

By using your braaaaaaiiiiiiiin.

Ok here’s the deal. Every so often the Facet of Light [FoL] will spawn a ‘Summoned Facet’ from one of the three coloured lights. Once it spawns it will be invunerable for a period of time. Killing this add will grant you a buff whose colour corresponds to the colour of the pillar of light it was spawned from.

Having collected this buff you simply move over to the matching column where you will be granted a different buff which allows you to simultaneously damage the FoL and take no damage from the aoe it resides in. You have a limited ammount of time to deal as much damage as you can before the buff expires, where you must exit the aoe or risk death.

You’ll have to repeat this process a number of times before the FoL succumbs, keep in mind that the boss is not passive, but will lob projectiles at you which spawn aoes similar to the one it stands in. Be sure to keep on your toes.

If all else fails, get a guildy to help ya out.

which is a pain for an elementalist without a guild, thus the title.

@DarkSpirit:
Honestly I believe that implementing what I suggested would go in a completely different direction than the “gear grind”. Indeed it will reduce the cost of new sets and help people to experiment with more builds. It wouldn’t be like adding more power to your current set, but just more flexibility, which is (imo) a form of horizontal progression.

And that in itself would be an improvement over the current situation. It doesn’t make sense that precursors for legendaries would have to be 2 tiers down and that players would have to choose between its cheaper ascended and its better-looking but more-expensive legendary.

THIS already goes against what GW2 is about if you look at the numerous examples where you upgrade an item using its original, as part of the recipe, into a more advanced version.

As far as the 5/10% is concerned, I have absolutely no qualms removing the ascended if exotics stats would be the top tier. Why didn’t they stop at exotics if they really believe in what GW2 is about? Otherwise, if ascended is really supposed to be the top tier and a lot more expensive to craft than exotics, then make ascended items really worth crafting for crying out loud! I don’t see how making a top tier that is BOTH expensive craft but not actually worth crafting to be upholding what GW2 is about.

This is also why players have been asking for bloodstone eater, empyreal eater, and now dragonite eater. Many of them are avoiding to craft ascended items because they don’t feel that ascended items are worth their while to craft! Is going the “eaters” route then the solution to the broken ascended tier and is that really what GW2 is about?

The reason they don’t want to do that is gold sellers. I’m just not seeing this huge injustice here. I see a game coming down in price. They were already selling it for $10.

If the current game costs $10 then they are effectively giving a $10 discount to new players but not to the veteran players.

There is also the other argument on whether the expansion itself is worth the $50.

And yes, whether ArenaNet treats its customers fairly is important to me which is why I am waiting to hear their response to this HoT debacle before I buy xpacks for my son and for myself.

They could even evolve in the legendary tier when you “unlock” them all.
Let’s say ~20 sets: ~500g for the first set + ~50g per set “upgrade” * 19 = 1450g for a full unlocked ascended set that would became “LEGENDARY” (at least in its functionality, not asking for the cool skins).

Overwriting != Progression.

I hear this many times where people ask, “Should I make ascended weapons or should I save up for making legendaries”? If the ascended tier was done right, that kind of question wouldn’t even be asked at all! Ascended should have been a natural progression towards legendary but yet they are designed as a separate alternative to screw with us.

And I don’t buy this BS about “it goes against what GW2 is about” which is a statement designed just to make the anti-gear grind crowd feel good. If they truly care so much what GW2 is about, then they shouldn’t have introduced ascended gear in the first place!

The ascended tier right now is a broken tier, neither here nor there. Too expensive and not useful enough to compel most players to craft them. They might as well just scrap it!

I have played GW1 ever since May 2005 all the way to GW2 beta and now. How many characters have I deleted due to boredom? ZERO!

I don’t believe in wasting my efforts.

LOL, I didn’t mean EVERYONE has, but a good lot of us have. Personally, I rather delete a character then fork over 10 bucks just to make another one. This decision came after I realized I had 22 character slots. I haven’t bought anymore since and that was 2 years ago, so… But, I understand where you’re coming from.

Well I have 2 of every professions + 1 for key farming so that is 17, not quite as much as you have but I have enough. I also bought another account for my son and a few other character slots for him.

If I don’t like the appearance of my characters, I just buy them new armor or change their faces/sex. Certainly much cheaper and less boring, time-wise, than to create a new character to build them up to level 80 again.

I agree that the price was a little steep at $50 but… then again, how many character has anyone of us deleted out of sheer boredem? Therefore, there’s your character slot right there.

I don’t believe in wasting my efforts. If buying the expansion is equivalent to buying a toaster then I don’t mind, but this is a MMO expansion and the relationship between ArenaNet and their customers go much further than simply buying a 1-time payment item.

How they respond to their customers would give me an idea on what I am actually paying for.

DarkSpirit.7046

Hey guys
So I left the game a while ago, for a couple of months. Now I’m thinking of coming back but I’m with a quite difficult dilema.

Is this game still worth a shot?

I’m asking this because, while I think is one of the best MMORPG’s out there for now, I feel a bit bored while playing it nowadays. I don’t like WvW too much beside roaming, but as a solo player, roaming is kinda of a pain. PvE is enjoyable but only the dgns. I ate the Silverwastes, is just a zerg fest where with my computer I don’t even understand what is going on. I’m left with PvP wich is what I enjoy the most but even that can be frustating a lot of times.

What have you guys done before after coming back to keep the game interesting for you?

I’ll say wait till the HoT debacle blows over before coming back. How ArenaNet responds to the HoT issue can make or break the game.

Does this only work for the ascended armor/weapons you can craft or Tequatl/triple trouble wurm ascended armor/weapons aswell?

You cna change stats on any ascended armor and weapons, regardless of origin, so it doesnt matter, if its crafted, from pvp, wvw, fractals or pve.

You cant forge another piece into teq or triple wurm armor, though, as they have no stat specific insignas/inscriptions.

That is going to be expensive though.

They are inconsistent with their policy on ascended items. I am annoyed with their half in/half out policy with ascended items. They want the ascended gear tier to act as an expensive gold sink but they refuse to make them useful enough for most people to feel compelled to acquire.

If they are not useful then remove them, otherwise make them useful. Stop wasting time going back and forth!

I am sitting on the fence right now and watching how this debacle unravels before I make my decision on the expansion.

This has become a huge media storm:

http://www.vg247.com/2015/06/19/guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns-price-pc/

just to name a few…

I want to know how ArenaNet would respond to this, or if they do respond at all.

Anet don’t have to response, they have done nothing wrong. People are just over reacting.

Do they have to respond? No. Should they? Yes. Even if the response is to tell the complaining players that nothing is going to change. And even just to say that they’re still discussing the options and have to weigh how easy the resolution is to apply, especially to those who have already purchased the game. And the latter one needs to be restated every few days.

1. Not responding means the side that wants ANet to go further has hope that things may change. Because nothing concrete has been said. This is especially true given ANet’s lack of communication on anything they are doing with the game. So they post and post in hopes to sway the company to do something in their favor.

2. The longer they don’t respond, the worse the damage from the event will be. And you can only discuss it for so long before players will think they’re just stalling to let the worst of the storm blow over before they pop out with a resolution. Especially if that resolution is not what those upset are looking for.

This is not even as big of back lash when ascended gear was introduced. People were saying if they put ascended in the game this game will die. We all saw how that turn out.

But the important thing is that they responded and it died down.

Personally, I am annoyed with their half in/half out policy with ascended items. They want the ascended gear tier to act as an expensive gold sink but they refuse to make them useful enough for most people to feel compelled to acquire.

If they are not useful then remove them, otherwise make them useful. Stop wasting time going back and forth!

I wont be surprised they also can’t decide on what to do with this HoT issue.

Initially I wanted to buy the ultimate pack for my son and I because I thought 4000 gems + 1 character slot is more than the cost of $50. But after reading all the complaints about $50 being overpriced for a basic pack, I am having second thoughts about the expansion.

You guys have changed my mind as I feel your pain. I am waiting to see how ArenaNet would respond.

In all seriousness if you were looking at a particular package ArenaNet is offering and you thought, “yeah, ok, a great gift” then I’d probably go ahead and buy it. I’m sure your son will love it regardless.

Just steer him clear of the forums.

The forums are important because they are the reviews from ArenaNet’s customers. I never buy an item from Amazon without first reading the customer reviews, both good and bad.

In the same way, it is important to me for ArenaNet to treat its valued customers fairly and respond to their questions, especially when so many of them + gaming websites have already chimed in on this issue:

http://kotaku.com/players-are-kittened-over-guild-wars-2-expansion-pricing-1712551999

Note that for a MMO, it is not a 1-time payment, take our money and run. This is a much longer relationship between ArenaNet and their customers. Other customers are watching intently on how ArenaNet handles these complaints.

There never should have been an increase to begin with. Like Colin said, it goes against what GW2 is about. I’m glad they are not going through with it.

If it goes against the game then why did they introduce it in the first place?

If they want to introduce a new gear tier called ascended then by all means introduce it with courage and conviction. Otherwise, don’t introduce it! Just don’t be half way here and there. So annoying when they can’t make up their minds.

Noe having thought about it. I didn’t know there was a Terrormancer. Okay, that’s cool. But what is it? I would assume it is a necromancer that runs a specific kind of build, like the Berserker.

Well for one I would like specs mean something. Blood for example is a classic case of a class design gone wrong with the class skill.

My wife wanted to play a vampire type build but when she saw how poorly it heals/works around DS. She question what is the point, and for good reason.

That kind of build would have worked in GW1.

Ironically the necro and mesmer have more viable build variety in GW1 than in GW2. You think that GW2 would be an improvement over GW1, but no…

You’ll never see an increase in event incentives, especially the amount of gold given as all that will do is lead to inflation in game, which is certainly not needed.

Well…I see why people do chest farming instead of playing this game then.

If event incentive gets too good, people complain: OH NO! that it leads to inflation!

If chest farming incentive gets too good, people shrugged for some strange reason.

Therefore, chest farming wins which explains why events fail so badly as nobody cares to do the less rewarding stuff anyway. Let’s just rename the area as “Chest Farming Waste” where all people get to do is chest farming all day long.

If you are not increasing the event incentive and you are not giving us GW1 heroes, then the last option is to nerf chest farming until it only gives much lesser rewards than the events do!

They dropped that gold amount several times since launch, in order to work out the games economy. Increasing gold drops for base game events would being going backwards and just doesn’t make much sense in my opinion and could really do a number on the games inflation.

In that case, the only way to solve this problem is to add Heroes as in GW1 then.

Otherwise why would so many forts fail during prime time Saturday night? And there was no event LFG shown on the LFG tool, only chest farmings and 1 guild mission.

And GW1 heroes idea is bad IMO.. I dont play MMO to run around with bunch of AI meatbags :p

I don’t play MMO to run around just doing chest farming either. Nobody was interested in fighting monsters and doing the group events except myself and what do you expect? I certainly can’t hold all the forts on my own.

If they don’t provide heroes as in GW1 then what is the solution?

Change map to one that is doing the events instead of chest farming?

I repeat, there was nobody doing the events except for me!

On all maps? Just change instance it’s simple

ArenaNet needs to make a stand between those who hope to play this game to kill monsters and those who perform exploit farming.

I am finding more and more conflict between the 2 groups of people. The exploit farmers who have found ways of manipulating the game for more loot, thus making everything on the TP more expensive, and those who sincerely want to play the game as it is designed.

Another example of exploit farming is this other thread that I have started:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Punished-for-Temple-Defense-events/first#post4970650

What is ArenaNet going to do with all these exploits?

Nothing in all likelihood and if Silverwastes is any indication, expect a whole lot more in the HoT areas.

The loot trains provide an easy reason for people to log in, inflate prices to encourage gem buying, and are incredibly easy to design to the point that it requires almost no effort on Anet’s part.

The only reason that the Queensdale train got put down was because of the New Player Experience. They wanted to remove all champs from all starting areas because of reasons and likely also did it because it makes the game look incredibly bad to newbies who mostly make human characters.

Actually I have nothing against farming, but in this case, the SW chest farming has grown to such popularity that it completely overshadowed the events there. So much so that it becomes more lucrative to just do chest farming over and over without playing the events in that area.

This is where the conflict with regular event players start to happen simply because these are designed to be group events and we don’t have heroes like we used to in GW1. Therefore, regular players are now taking a hit when they find it hard to hold forts on their own.

All these add up to more conflicts between players in the area and creates a negative playing experience all around. Furthermore, when it becomes more rewarding to not play the game than it is to play the game, is a sure sign of trouble in the game design.

I have said before many many times and I will continue to complain about this to ArenaNet.

1. The group events don’t scale well to one player if that player is the only person doing it. If ANet can’t scale them, then they would have to provide heroes, otherwise that person won’t be able to play the content. And please don’t force people into chest farming in order to play this game. It is just boring. I bought this game to fight monsters, not to farm chests for crying out loud!

2. Rewards from group events also do not scale well. If the group event expects 5 people and only 1 person actually did it, he must have tried very hard and should get 5 times the reward!

Silverwastes is in a pretty good place right now. There are multiple instances, some for the chest train and others for VW/events. It isn’t too difficult to use the LFG system to find a map that is to your liking.

You’ve correctly identified the predictors of player behaviour though – If it’s lucrative enough it will be farmed, if it isn’t it will be largely ignored.

I opened up LFG, all I see were chest farming and 1 guild mission. People didn’t want to do events until I kept complaining on the map that we need HEROES BACK FROM GW1!

After half an hour of my complaining, then they started to do VW. This was on a Saturday night!

We either need Heroes like in GW1 or we fix SW.

Yeah, I do miss it very much. If it had the GW2 engine, I would still play it today

(and if only for the heroes, which could spare me the PUG’s)

I do. I miss my heroes.

Awwww, I think I remember you from the hero section of the guru forums. There used to be page-long debates where people had mostly identical hero builds except maybe 2-3 skills across all heroes, but kitten those fuelled the flames. Good times, miss that too.

I miss that. Coming up with a team build in GW1 was part of the fun.

I feel so helpless in GW2, always asking people in the map to help me with this and that group event. Sometimes, people don’t want to help and even dissuaded others from helping me:

I do miss my heroes…

GW1: You are a commander of an elite group of heroes!
GW2: You are merely Trahearne’s side kick with no real power. But maybe we would get to usurp him as the leader of the Pact in HoT after he has fallen under the dragon’s influence and we get to kill him.

Well, the manifesto is true. Everything you love about Guild Wars 1 (minus the lore, most mechanics, features… the name remained anyway), combat IS more active, the event system is new.

Everything you love about Guild Wars 1 including the deeper build system, wait that’s not true! The heroes, wait no heroes! The build saving feature, wait no build saving feature! …blah blah blah…

Here you go, a WoW-lookalike.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment I have with GW2 is that it is not more like GW… so, yeah, I regret that development was stopped on GW.

Yup I find Mike O’Brien’s MMO Manifesto Trailer (i.e. advertisement for GW2) amusing right about now:

Mike O’Brien: “We founded ArenaNet to innovate, so Guild Wars 2 is our opportunity to question everything, to make a game that defies existing conventions. If you love MMOs, you’ll want to check out Guild Wars 2, and if you hate MMOs, you’ll really want to check out Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1 and puts it into a persistent world that’s got more active combat, a fully-branching, personalized storyline, a new event system to get people playing together, and still no monthly fees.

When a new event happens it’ll add something to work on that is really only doable during the event. Look at the blades backpiece. It’s so hard to get it now because of it’s massive need for blade shards that aren’t easy to get apart from parking 10 characters at no so secret jp.

Blade shards are not that hard to get, even now. Just use the MF recipe to get them from sprockets.

Punished for Temple Defense events?

This can be considered to be a form of “exploit farming”. There is also a long thread on Reddit on this issue here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/329u0m/punished_for_temple_defense_events/

GW2subredditaccount

Yes. The same happened at Blixx. There was one event that if failed allowed the chain of events to restart sooner for much better loot. Some players would do complete the event, and get flak. Other players would scream and yell that their precious farming had been delayed. It’s been a common issue. Some events, when failed, reward better loot than if the events were completed as intended.
Another example from longer ago that is similar in that I consider it an “exploit farm” but was on a different scale, and of a different active issue is the Scarlet Minion Attacks that went on. If people clustered together, they forced champs to spawn, and then would just keep massing together to cause champs to spawn in events for champ bags that gave loot that was new to the game at that time. It would purposefully and intentionally fail the meta-event of repelling the attackers. You had three options: avoid the zone the meta event was going on in, join in on the zerg and hope you do enough damage to get loot, or avoid the zerg with the intention of completing enough multiple smaller events, quickly enough to progress the meta event. The real issue being if you did this, the champ bag farmers would then get the loot from the end reward, so even when you succeed, the exploiters would still get a better haul.
The slight different between the two sets here is that exploiters had to actively exploit the Scarlet Minion events to get better rewards. For the temples, people who want to purposely fail the event to reap better rewards have to do so PASSIVELY…
But I still consider both to be a form of exploit when the intention of the game design is to complete events for reward. Failing events, or actively working to fail an event, should not provide better rewards than just doing the event as intended. I consider it an exploit when failure is rewarded better than success. And this has been in GW2 since release in many such cases. They are then changed, on a case by case basis, as the community brings them to the attention of Anet.
What is worse is when these such exploit farms then restrict people from accessing content, such as the Path to Arah, etc.

Punished for Temple Defense events?

I was in cursed shores and the Grenth temple defense event came up. Someone wanted to kill the risen priest to unlock a trait but other people tried to stop him, purposefully wanting the event to fail so that they can take back the temple later with better loot.

This system seems broken to me and it caused a lot of confusion and altercations between players when some people purposefully want the defense event to fail because they are rewarded to think that way.

Loot should be rewarded the same way even if it is a defense event and if the difficulty does not warrant it, please increase the difficulty of the defense event until it does. Otherwise, you would have people who want to do the defense event fighting others who want the greater loot to take back the temple.

Furthermore, if the defense event is completed successfully then others in the area are punished by not having the loot reward for the event to take back the temple. This caused greater conflict and confusion between players in the area.

I do not see skill challenges on the map.

Welcome to new player experience, where things are level-gated.

Skill challenges should open up at level 13 though:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/NPE-Feedback-Merged-Please-read-1st-post/first

Yeah that is why I suspect this is a bug from the recent update.

I used to be able to see the skill challenges that I have not done even in areas that I have not visited, on the map I am on. But I am now level 14 and I still can’t see the skill challenges in the areas that I have not visited even though I know there are skill challenges there.

Are your characters newly created? Skill challenges are unlocked at level 13 now unless I remember wrong.

I am level 14 and yet I still don’t see the undiscovered skill challenges on my map. I used to be able to see those.
