Solo friendly design = anti-social design
I may not properly group in open world but I find myself running around in small groups working together all the time. Finding a team where everyone is on the same page and using strategy is a problem in all online games though the way guild wars 2 has done this seems to have made it worse since everyone tends to focus on DPS but then at least I don’t have to wait 2 hours for a healer to show up. This is where being in a guild helps. You can still tell who is being good or not by how they play.I must say I really miss the Cooperative Missions that drove the GW1 story line. I understand these games are very different. I even like the concept of Personal Story. How hard would it have been to sprinkle cooperative events into the world. Although we’re not all happy with the re-visioning or end-game, I think most agree the new Fractal Dungeon shards are a lot of fun. Sprinkled between all Personal Story chapters should have been Cooperative Missions in GW2. Repeatable content designed for five man teams. Not as difficult as dungeons, but repeatable and lasting 15-30 minutes. If the game had this it would fix the issue of not having enough team-oriented content. People would flock to these too.
Personal Story chapters are done alone for the most part (as designed) dynamic events and hearts and done out of group. Outside of group you really aren’t paying much attention to the other players (in a zerg you can’t). It’s really a lone-gun type of game with little to no focus on team play except in dungeons. The problem there is it’s an MMORPG….
I’ve already expressed how I feel about dungeons.
You can already invite people into your personal story to do it with friends if you choose but they don’t really encourage this.
They may well tie the personal quest to group content in the future. The quest to kill Zhaitan for instance is in a dungeon which you do with other players and is repeatable and while the others aren’t necessary they are plot related. I don’t really see much of a difference between the dungeons and the missions of GW1 aside from maybe difficulty.
Tho they would probably need to make a version scaled for single player as well if they did this otherwise you will be getting stuck if others aren’t also doing the mission since you can’t make up for it with hero’s and henchman in GW2.
Perhaps they should make it that payers who are being buffed or healed by you tag enemies for you to incentives co-op and actually paying attention to your teammates a bit more (unless they already do this and I just haven’t noticed). I don’t know that there is much A-net can do about a lack of true co-op in since its mostly and issue with the players though less Zergs would help.

You have obviously not played Guild Wars 1. The lightbringer title was only useful against Abandons minions who were only present at certain parts of the game and I don’t know that anyone really liked it.
It would be like if ascended gear had the same stats as exotic but provided agony resistance or a bonus specifically to the enemies in the dungeon. Most would be fine with this, in fact it has been suggested as a compromise more than once by people against the ascended gear.

Story (quality of writing)
Some of it is good, some of it is bad and its better than what you usually get in an MMO. Its just not very constant and I think you’re being a bit harsh. I don’t even remember much from GW prophecies and from what I do remember it was pretty terrible. Factions was better though and EotN and Nightfall had some characters I liked.
Lack of monolithic path
I don’t mind it so much. I’m fine with the story essentially being segmented. I do remember seeing some of my choices in Orr (for instance I rand in the skritt who I had helped again on one of the quests). Would have been nice it there were a few more obvious effects but I wasn’t really expecting there to be. The problem I had with Zhaitan is though he looks awesome it wasn’t a very good fight. It would have been strange had you managed to defeat Zhaitan completely on foot I suppose with how powerful he is meant to be but I think it would have been better if you weakened him with canons until he fell to ground and then finished him off. I don’t suppose I really “cared” when he died but then I rarely do in games. I don’t think I’m going to care when any of the dragons die because so far they seem more like a force. I can’t really hate them, they don’t have enough of a personality for that. Everyone partying at the end was nice at least and the music was great.
Bugs
They really do need to get the bugs sorted. It one of things that has been killing this game for me. Having the events broken everywhere and waiting for a week or them to fix Arah only to be repeatedly disconnected while trying to do it is not fun and it is really annoying than having to respec because one of the traits you picked is actually broken. I feel like the games still in Beta. However I very much doubt they are “running around the office giving each other high fives for delivering the best MMORPG ever”. They are likely aware of the problems and trying to fix them. I wouldn’t want to be the staff working on the game right now. I doubt they are having much fun.
Manifesto amended
Yep, I’m still waiting to see how this turns out but right now I not really happy with how things are going and question whether putting up with the bugs and balancing is worth it. If they going to be like other MMO’s I might as well play a more polished one. I think I’ll finish some of the things i was doing and I’m not going to get refund but I doubt I will be buying future content if they keep this up.
Unbalanced play prevails
Yep, not much else to say.
Dynamic events = follow the zerg and wait for reward.
Yep, in some of the smaller groups its not so bad and you do actually need to work together but with the large zergs in Orr its terrible which is one of the reason i don’t spend much time there. Since rewards are based on actually doing damage it makes it feel like your kittening yourself by doing support or CC at all rather than spamming AOE attacks.
Solo friendly design = anti-social design
I may not properly group in open world but I find myself running around in small groups working together all the time. Yep, they don’t even have basic stuff like appearance changers in the cash shop yet.
I would have bought more than the from the cash shop if they actually had decent stuff in it (and not tied to RNG because kitten that). The only thing I’ve gotten from the cash shop is a character slot.
If you make it repeatable for a day or two your still going to get masses of people in one place, just hopefully not so much that everything is crashing and it means people who work or are in a different time zone might get a chance to do the event too.

Yes, I don’t want to spend all my time grinding for stats rather than doing what I actually feel like doing at the time and it’s better to have everyone on even footing gear wise. I especially don’t want to be grinding when when I have multiple characters and multiple builds on those characters (which is what I thought A-net was suppose to be encouraging with their there multiple path personal story and more than one zone to level). Alternatively they could make a difficult challenge which rewards you with max stat gear so it’s not “easy” but at least you only have to do it once. I do actauly like the dungeons but I don’t want to be repeating them over and over again for gear.
Grinding is not difficult; it’s just boring and takes a long time. I’m fine with doing it for titles and look because then I can do it at my own pace when i want to and it doesn’t effect anything else.

Eh…guild wars 2 does a lot better in this regard to many MMO’s even if there are still many armors I would have liked it if they just tweaked the male version to fit female characters (for example tier 3 human medium armor which looks awesome to me on the guys but the female version…not so much) but at least there is choice. I do actually like some of the skimpy armors too. I don’t see them letting you toggle different version of the same armor, it would be too much work and you could just wear a different one.
I admit I despise the starting light armor and really wish I could just have the male version. When I made my Elementalist and my Mesmer I bought different armor as soon as I could and if I got new gear that was better but used the starting model I didn’t use it. Especially for my Elementalist who is a large tattooed Norn and looks really stupid in a miniskirt.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
It is armor you can get in the game, its just mixed and matched. The chest and leg Armor are Order of Whispers but the shoulders, boots and gloves aren’t. I don’t know which ones they are, you could probably find out at the PvP locker in the Heart of the Mists.
For a start being forced to grind for gear and vertical progression does not make anything harder, it just makes thing more tedious, time consuming and forces you to repeat the same thing over and over again to move on. So no its not about players not wanting a challenge at all. If an enemies’ stats increase by X amount and your stats also increase by X amount nothing has changed, the numbers have just gotten bigger. This is the lazy way of extending content and creating the illusion of progression.
If you want to actually make things more difficult and interesting you increase the enemies stats without also increasing the players stats, give them different skill combination, better AI or some unique thing you have to do to beat them (obviously the first is the easiest option).
Gear grind gates content so instead being able to do what you want to do you have to spend X amount of hours repeating a task you have already done or don’t actually want to do. Especially if future content is balance around the gear you get from grind (as it with WoW and other MMO’s).
It makes old content invalid because you end up over-geared for them so it becomes trivial and rewards are no longer worthwhile. It makes it difficult for new player or old players with new characters to get into the game because you will never catch up to those who have been playing longer and old content ends up deserted.
It unbalances PvP (this won’t affect sPvP but it will effect WvW), it stops becoming about skill and more about who spent the most amount of time grinding. Sure a great player might still beat a kitten player with better gear but you’ll be losing against someone who is equal or bit (or a lot depending on how big a stat difference we are talking) lesser to you and the better the gear gets the worse this becomes.
It forces you to stick with one character and one build if you want to be decent because the time investment to get the corresponding gear for that build is just too great and you fall behind if you don’t keep playing them. One of the great things about Guild Wars 1 was that you didn’t have this problem; it was very easy to experiment with builds and skill combinations. If you got bored playing one thing or a different build would be better for a different situation you were free to change it. When new content was introduced you got new skills allowing you to further tweak your builds or take them in a new direction. This is horizontal progression, you get more options and more ways of dealing with challenges rather than just continuing the same thing upwards. Problem is it much harder to develop than simply increasing numbers.

It’s what this forum censors naughty words too. Now I think a lot of people use it purposefully as a joke… or this community just cusses a ridicules amount normally.
The first time I got censored with it was when I was trying to say Charr are bad “rear end” but bad kitten fits too. :P
The premise that no gear treadmill has ever existed in this game is false when you consider legendary weapons. That being said there is no overwhelming advantage to getting a legendary other than bragging rights because the stats aren’t much better than exotics which are easy to obtain.
What will kill this game is the rampant amount of bugs and sloppy content releases that have either not been sufficiently play tested or planned. If Anet spent half as much time and effort into producing polished bug free content as they do promoting new patches the game might have a chance. The fact that they are offering free trials of the game just 2 months after it wen live is a bad sign. Free trials on a weekend where they drop a lag bomb of unplayable and buggy content is worse.
Legendary weapons had the same stats as exotics before this.
GW2 was meant to be a game where both casual and hardcore players can play all the content together. The way it is now will segregate the community.
Why couldn’t it have been infusion slots on exotics with no stat change. Then players can play the dungeons for skins and better infusions.
Because it seems many people can’t just play because something is actually fun, there has to be a + to their stats at the end and think that just because they spent 90hr doing the thing over and over again they should be better than everyone else without actually getting better at the game.
I think all NPC’s now take off head armor in cut scenes.

I get excited for new skins, new skills, new content and bosses not increased stats.

I care less about the event and more about playing with the people I and other friends invited. I guess having invite a friend and a massive event on at the same time was not the best idea.

Every time I try and download this patch It just keeps flicking rapidly between downloading and saying there is a connection error and I get maybe 2% through the download until the thing craps out completely and freezes forcing me to start again.
I’ve turned off both my virus scanner and my firewall but It didn’t help. Anyone else having this issue and how do you fix it?
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
They explained it pretty well in the dev blog: the rarity levels had a gaping hole between exotic and legendary, they needed something to plug the gap.
There was not a “gaping hole” in anything. Exotic weapons ran the gamut from being worth 1.5-2g each all the way up to 500-600g or even slightly more, which is very close to the monetary cost of a Legendary.
To the extent that certain value levels in certain equipment slots were a bit thin, those could have easily been rectified without introducing power creep and a gear treadmill.
Edit: And yes, people are angry that their maxed-out characters are no longer maxed out. That’s what a “gear treadmill” is.
And you know what? Yes, I’d be complaining if Ascended items had been in the game from the start. Getting baseline Exotics for your character takes long enough, particularly if you play more than one character, or use more than one build on each character. The higher levels of grinding could have, should have, and were reserved for getting better cosmetic equipment.
That ^
Grind was supposed to be reserved for aesthetics not stats so max gear would relativity easy to obtain.
You’re in the wrong part of it. The area goes from lvl 15 to lvl 25. I think it’s left that is low area but it’s been a while since I’ve been through it.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Honestly I’m at the point where I’m considering ditching the game. I stuck it with despite the balance issues, glitches and the fact half the dynamic events are broken because I figured they fix these things eventually but I don’t like the direction this game is heading anymore and feel like it was sold to me on false premise so there isn’t a point.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Go with whatever you want. Maybe watch some videos of different classes and see what appeals to you.
Although Norn necromancer always seems like a weird combination to me. Don’t know what I’m basing this on but that seems like a profession the Norns wouldn’t like.
Still even if that’s true your Norn can be special. :P
The main problem with minions right now is that sometimes they won’t attack. Either they just stand there and literally do nothing for a few seconds until kicking in (by that time your target is half dead from auto-attacks) or they’ll move very slowly to your target (seems to happen like this: they take a couple steps, stop, couple steps, stop and then they move in for the attack, but there’s a massive delay).
I think Rangers have similar problems with their pet and rumor has it that pets will be getting fixed.
That^
As well as sometimes wandering off in the middle of battle and attacking another group you weren’t engaged with.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
You still take full damage while in stealth and you need to be right next to the person so really most people should be able to tell what the thief is doing and where they are.
Regardless can’t Ele can finish someone in Mist Form? That is far worse and I think stability stomp is more powerful than stealth stomp anyway (unless the people your fighting are being dumb).

Ok, two things that need clearing up:
1: There will ascended versions of ALL armor as stated by ArenaNet.
2: The level 80 transmutation stones are bought with actual money. Just because you get lucky a lot doesn’t mean all of us do.
Get lucky? I have like 50+ from map completions and I’ve only completed 60% of the map? I’ve never paid for any…. Possibly a couple may have come from black lion chests… but still are you really not getting stones from completing a map?
The ones you get from map completion are normal transmutation stones not the lvl 80 ones.
Weird I just looked I have 32 blue ones.. did I get them from Black Lion Chests? Alone with them boosters, revive orbs, repair canisters and other stuffs?
I’m pretty sure I have never gotten one from the maps and I’ve done 60% with one character and collectively I’ve done the whole map although maybe you have? I don’t know. I have got some from the daily/monthly achievements (I have 20). Maybe that is where you got yours from?
Though since they seem to appear fairly regularly in the achievement rewards so if you were actually trying to go for them I don’t know that it would be that difficult to get a good supply.

Demented sheep and JBleez hit on something I feel is a much better solution than adding gear with better stats. The Hall of Monuments. People that play these types of games love to show off. I am one of these types to a mild degree.
Having titles and gear/weapon skins that can display your prowess is a far better solution in my opinion. The “home” instance where you can throw parties for social gatherings with mannequins with your collection on display. Great idea :-)
Regardless of this update goes I do actually hope they add something akin to the HoM at some point. They already have a home instance but it feels empty at the moment.
Ok so then lay it on us. What exactly is the reason this is needed? I’m honestly curious.
What is the reason that doing a complete 180 on their manifesto is now required?
The problem is that there is currently nothing to chase at max level but legendaries which is a HUGE grind. That grind is seriously off putting to a lot of players so rather than decrease the grind they added a tier between Exotic and Legendary to give people something to chase along the way to their legendary.
Then they could have added more gear with different skins (since legendary had the same stats as exotic) that are easier then legendary but harder than exotic. If they want something for hardcore gamers to chase why does it even need to be gear? why not a HoM like GW1 had with trophies and titles? It gives you no advantage but shows you were good enough to get it.
By giving these items better stats than exotic they have gone back on everything they said about this post release.

Its not a huge issue but I would prefer if it was separate as well and I think WvWvW should be using your pvp gear.
Not really happy about this, the promised lack of gear treadmill was one of the reasons why I got this game in the first place. They are going back on this after only a few months?
The kitten broken events to be sorted out (hopefully permanently because it’s getting ridicules) and other bug fixes and balancing, changing loot drops for champs to make killing them worthwhile, possibly the introduction of the deep sea dragon (who as far as I’m aware isn’t even named yet), some new weapons and armour to go with the dungeon, hopefully a new area that is not full of bloody undead, lots and lots of lag, being disconnected constantly and the event becoming one giant cluster…bomb where you can barely see what going on.
I’m hoping some one will reduced the horrible clipping issues with Charr armour but I doubt it.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Yes! I am honestly baffled as too why they don’t already have this feature in the game. I can’t imagine it would be that hard to implement and if they make cost gems (at reasonable price of course) it would be extra money for them.
I don’t want to have to start again just because I’m not happy with my characters appearance. With how much time you spend in MMO chances are most are going to want to change style at some point without losing progress.
I definitely don’t want them take as long as they did for guild wars one with this.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Perhaps it just that the playstyle doesn’t fit you? Try a different class, they do all play quite differently and Ele is not the best class to learn the game with.
I may change my mind latter but I’m currently lvl 40 with my Ele and have had little issue so far. In fact I’m doing better than I did with my Thief and Mes at this level and can take out fairly large groups of enemies that are a few levels higher than me. They don’t have a lot of HP but with how mobile they are and Arcane Shield I’m surviving just fine.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Well I was going to go ranger but got bored very quickly.
Generally speaking I like thieves and assassins in games. I like traps and I like being fast, mobile and ducking in at out of melee.
I challenge ANet to make Centaur playable.
Now that’d be something refreshing in the MMO world.
Jumping puzzles as a centaur? that ought to be laugh.
First point I hadn’t really noticed and a mish mash of bright colours kind of fits the young and enthusiastic sylvari anyway.
Second point I SRONGLY disagree. The variety GOOD thing. Not everyone wants to play a very human looking sylvari and the ability to have each sylavri look wildly different is great and reflects the great variety in plant kingdom. I don’t want a repeat of humans where pretty much picking the makeup and everyone looks the same.
Why remove the detail options for the body? don’t like don’t use it and they have brightly coloured hair options because they are plants. Flowers are brightly coloured so no it doesn’t seem unnatural for them. Why would just want slightly different shades of the same colour?
With the armour yes, they are in desperate need of more sylvari styled options. They look silly in most human armour IMO. The Charr also have this issue.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
My mes! Posing with a gun because I’m lame like that.
I just wish there were more light armours that I actually liked on her but heritage gear looks pretty awesome so will do for now.
For those that are saying that they hate elvish characters… you do know that Sylvarri have an elvish outline, and were originally supposed to look even more elvish than they do now right?
I fail to seee how that changes anything.
I’m sorry but when and where do I first encounter a Largos? <- Serious question.
During the main quest and you fight one for a SP in Mount Maelstrom.
Well hopefully they will be eventually but to be honest I’d rather have the Tengu than blue assassin elves.
I’m not sure I would want those wing things showing all the time. Would only like to be able to play them if I could hide/unhide them on command. Would rather be able to play as a Tengu/Skritt/Quaggan-/Kodan (in that order) before I play as one of them.
I don’t see us getting Quaggan or Skrit. Quaggan because of getting the attacks and armour to work with them and the fact that they’re so non violent. Skritt because they are meant to be incredibly stupid unless in a large group.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
I don’t think it’s the citadel. I personally don’t find it particularly hard to navigate though I did initially have some issues getting to the Bane
I think it’s
A) the fact that people often treat their mmo character as avatars of themselves and more human races are easier to “connect” with since we are human.
B) Massive clipping issues and most of the armour looks like it was designed for humans so it just looks horrible on Charr.
C) Note how many people are playing human or norn females in the….how to put this…“skimpiest” armour? Shouldn’t have to explain this one.
D) Many players from GW1 made their GW2 character to be a descendant of their GW1 character.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Great for exploring and soloing (so long as you pay attention since they arn’t all that hardy), especially since shadow refuge allows you to cheat and nab things without bothering to actually kill the enemies. They’re pretty good in a large group too with easy access to combo finishers, shortbow and stealthing downed players so they can be rezed but then…my 2 most played characters other than my main theif are a Mesmer and a Elementalist both of which seem to be considered pretty bad at pve. I don’t know how they compare to the likes of a Warrior or Gaurdian
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
My charr theif! I love her even if she does look a wee bit silly when performing dagger storm.
Anyone know if there anything that resemble Ash Legion medium armor?. I found some Ash Legion recipes but that was for tailoring. =/
Just wondering since my Charr is Ash, and the bandit mask is really yucking me out at this point. =/
If you’re meaning the armour the ash soldiers around the place are wearing I think that’s actually the tier 1 light cultural armour.
black powder (smoke combo field) plus heartseeker (leap combo finisher) = stealth
As far as I’m aware shattering an illusion doesn’t count as it being killed and doesn’t give you the on death effect.
(edited by Demented Sheep.1642)
Yeah it is rather annoying. Especially when some of them look like they only need very minor tweaks to fix such as moving the split in the coat up a little bit. I suppose they had many other more important things to worry about than making sure armour fit the non human races properly.
Mainly because they look kitten and for once I get to play a female version of a beast race that actual looks fierce and bestial rather than being a oversexed cat girl or an animal head pasted on top of a human body. YAY!
After actually playing them I unexpectedly found that I really like a lot of the Charr characters, imo their personal story are the best and their culture is interesting.
Warband Support should include charr from your warband

Yeah I was dispointed that you just get 2 generic Charr rather than your actual war band. I assume this was for balance reasons though.
