The game I found when I started to play was amazing. Not by graphics or lore or mechanics. For me the surprise was the attitude of the players. No competition. No KS. No abuse of the high lvl players against the low lvl. I found that the guy coming to fight against the veteran I fought is not trying to steal my drop. He in fact left for a few moments his business to help a newbie (me). WHAT? Is this real? This is happening in an online game? YES. This was GW2.
Today, by the intentional decision to segregate the playerbase into “dedicated, skilled players” (with a daily 8-10 hours to spend in game) and “other casual players” (filthy casuals! ) the atmosphere of the game changed. ANet further pushed the toxicity forward by allowing instruments to monitor other players.
ANet’s attitude towards players changed also. From “play how you want and enjoy the game” to “gid gud (remember the Anet worker spitting these words? ) dude. Learn the mechanics, the skills and builds, invest effort and time and then you will be able to play the game”. Nothing about the enjoyment :-((
I completely agree with you.
But i rarely see people explaining HOW that happens. What stats are used, what weapons, what utilities.
Many people (like me) probably use the same builds that other players use that don’t find HoT difficult but are simply not as good at twitch combat. Other players might use builds that they made up as they went along. But if people wanted advice on their build and/or playstyle they would ask for it. Instead what this thread is about is the Difficulty Curve.
Living stories are made for veteran players in mind and are harder than core game. You need to master dodging and your skills and have updated armor and weapons.
This is what I don’t understand – why doesn’t Anet want all players to be able to experience the Stories?
I’m not against difficult content for those who want it. I just really like the GW2 stories and would like to experience them for myself. And by “for myself”, I mean solo as they were meant to be experienced.
Hello,
82 days ago i started a small project just for fun for myself.
I did everyday fractal dailies and farmed berries in bitterfrost in that 82 days.
In 2 days my project is done and i will have:
250x Fractal Initiate’s Chest
250x Fractal Adept’s Chest
250x Fractal Expert’s Chest
250x Fractal Master’s Chest~5500x Cracked Fractal Encryption
~150.000 unbound magic
Additional to this items i have:
54x Black Lion Chest KeysAnd also crafted ~300 pieces of a “secret” item which is worth ~900Gold
I invested into this project ~1700Gold
My guilds told me to do a live stream when i open the chests and i wanted to ask you here in the forum if you are also interested to watch me opening all that stuff.
Im awaiting 5000Gold.. Maybe its way to much, but lets see haha
What do you think?
Wow, that’s a lot of stuff. I would watch the vid for curiosity.
Who keeps suggesting that outfits/armor have a leg cape?!?! I’m sick of it! I feel like it makes otherwise good outfits/armor look so… so… asymmetrical! Why can’t more outfits/armor be symmetrical?
Click here if you want to see the full image.
Yes, it is unfortunate. We keep asking for less skirts, butt-capes, trenchcoats, etc. and also asking for more symmetrical armor, but for some reason they just keep making lop-sided stuff with skirts. I just don’t understand it.
Its not. A. Dying. Fish. It is literally immortal and has no legs so has to flop to you to move around on land.
Now if there was a definitive “death” animation, I’d be more apt to say yes, that’s just cruel. But that’s not how it works.
It is the animation that a fish makes when it is dying. The fact that a group of pixels can’t die doesn’t mean that it can’t be programmed to look like it is, which this one has been.
I’m glad you are able to look at it as a fish flopping to move around. I unfortunately just see a dying fish.
(edited by Djinn.9245)
As for the suffering of said animal: it never dies. Its an immortal fish.
Yes, a “toy” that is an eternally suffering fish. Yay.
Second, no one is on a high horse. People are simply expressing their opinion.
Yes, and from what I have gathered people asking for the Floppy Fish to change are calling those wanting it to remain the same some manner of a Sadist.
It’s a ludicrous position to take, we’re talking about fish that doesn’t exist in the real world, of which is advertised as something magically abnormal and somehow at this late in the game they perceive it as ‘shocking’.
How much violence do you think is in this game? When you kill a Charr NPC with a fire-based attack, the death animation has the charr screaming as if it is being burned alive, flailing its arms trying to put out the flames. We also go kill Zombie enemies, with all the grotesque innards and limbs out in full view, some zombies don’t have eyes!
I am not saying they don’t have a right to an opinion, but given all the other things in this game that they haven’t spoken up about, the opinion that somehow a Floppy Fish is shocking and needs to be changed is outright disingenuous. I take into question the sincerity of the OP’s request. I am willing to be the OP is trolling everyone and managed to get some actual people who care about fish made of pixels.
Many people actually care about what happens in GW2. I see posts of people getting upset about certain stories, or angry, or sad. The pixels represent something, like any image. Of course it isn’t representing a real fish, but what I’m saying is that I don’t prefer to have any kind of image of a dying animal frequently or constantly around as a “fun” or “humorous” thing. Obviously this is just my opinion, but I don’t understand people who object to me stating it.
Can I ask you to explain why it’s ok for minipets to be beheaded and suffering but this
magical fish can’t flap around on the ground after you?The only pet I know of that is “beheaded” is the wurm. If you read the entire thread you would see that I only found out that the wurm pet is a severed wurm head in this very thread. I never zoomed in on one to see the details, but I don’t enjoy that either.
There’s also the Chicken caught in a Tornado with her Eggs/Babies….
Why do you play such a violent game if these bother you so much? You commit Genocide in this game for the sake of a few MATS, randomly murdering things just because they got in your way, slaying mythical creatures left, right and centre.
I’m just trying to see the logic behind all this and why a commodity has stirred so much grief for players when other examples of the reasons given so far already exist in game and didn’t bother them until a fish was introduced into game. Where was the line crossed exactly?
I’m not sure why you are trying to tell me how I play or think when you actually have no idea.
But having a dying fish just hanging around constantly as a “fun” animation is different from encounters while actually playing.
IMO, more sound controls are the answer. A slider for Legendaries, a slider for Minipets, a slider for “item use” or some such (like Tomes of Knowledge), etc. Or at least a slider for all “non-combat sound effects”.
Second, no one is on a high horse. People are simply expressing their opinion.

Gee, there are many cool skins locked behind content I’m not interested in.
They are not the legendary armor skin. The only one.
By saying “you’re not worthy of that armor set”, you are sending a message telling all those people “you’re second-class citizens”.
Who is saying someone “is not worthy”? Not being “worthy” is a judgement, which I have not seen anywhere in game or by Anet. It doesn’t make any more sense than saying that if you don’t have a ticket, you are “not worthy” to see Hamilton…..
What is actually happening is that you have to successfully do raid content in order to get the armor.
This is exactly the same as a Legendary back item. At one time there was only 1 available through only 1 mode of game play. Now there are 2 but each is still only available through 1 mode of game play.
I don’t see a problem with this. Many MMOs have similar exclusive rewards for modes of game play.
(edited by Djinn.9245)
How are you supposed to know that if you don’t have time to look at stuff?
Counter magic is explained to you in episode 1 by the NPCs with the tutorial to destroy the shards, then the elementals. Figuring out what counter magic does specifically is simply assuming the reverse of what happens when you don’t use it. In the first fight with Caudecus, it should be obvious that when you use it, he teleports to you and is stunned. If you don’t use it, he teleports to you and launches you. The second fight is the same, except he’s CC immune and is no longer stunned.
Of course anyone should know that “counter” and “magic” = countering the magic that is being used against you. But you just illustrated my point – you don’t know exactly what it does against any specific attack except by trial and error. Its not like it just stops the attack. That would literally be what “counter magic” is. Instead it has a very specific reaction to each different attack. But since it is only part of your UI while the attack is being used against you, it is very difficult to read what the Counter will be. You have to just use it and then be ready to react to what it does even though you don’t know what that will be unless you read up ahead of time. Very annoying way to try to win a boss fight.
Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is how gaming works. Raid loot is always much better than anything else and it should be. People dedicate a lot of time and effort to raiding and they should be rewarded for that.
So, at first people were asking for challenging content and rewards to show off. Now there is “I’m entitled not for just exclusive, but for the best rewards because I’m doing content I asked for”. And then some people are wondering why raid community have such reputation.
I don’t really understand what you are saying, but traditionally in MMOs Raiders get the best rewards because Raiding requires the most dedication / time investment in the game.
i will never have a bifrost my self cause i dont have the spine to craft it that means arena net should give it to me for free?
If you are truly trying to make a good argument for your side, why throw it in the garbage by making a statement like this? No one is asking for anything for free.
they want the rewards of raiders without raiding its like me wanting bifrost without crafting it
Which you can do – you can purchase it from the TP.

I get it was an april joke back then, but it has no place in this world whatsoever, and only creates a lot of noise in the rest of the world.. isn’t it time we get rid of it?
It is unfortunate that in a game based on and full of wonderful story, the developers have to constantly waste their time and distract us from that wonderful world with SAB and mini-games (adventures). I also HATE that they force mini-games on us during the Story by replacing our character skills and making us play a mini-game. I don’t play GW2 to play OTHER games.
legendary armor is where I draw the line. That is flat out spitting in the face of every person who doesn’t enjoy raiding, I consider it being a personal insult to the non raiding community “haha, this is the fanciest armor in the game, and you will never have it!”
Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is how gaming works. Raid loot is always much better than anything else and it should be. People dedicate a lot of time and effort to raiding and they should be rewarded for that.
There are many game rewards in GW2 that I will never get. Any Holiday JP rewards, PvP rewards, SAB rewards, etc.
I am fine with not getting rewards for activities I am not good at and that I don’t want to grind to become good at.
But still, even 1k gold is alot to some. It feels nice knowing its in a secured vault.
There’s already screen name + pw which is first line of protection, then email and the optional SMS (text) login authorization. Someone would have to get through all those and bruteforce your phone/number to allow themselves access to your account. And really they’d need a decent pc/programs for such things.
Actually, that is not true. Someone just has to call Customer Service and convince them to unlock the account. With people sharing all their information in social media, its pretty easy for someone to find out enough personal information about you to convince a company that they are you. This is much easier than brute force hacking and happens all the time.
I don’t like the way Counter-Magic is used. I suppose it’s meant to be keybound, but I keep wanting to hover my mouse over it, expecting some sort of tooltip about what I’m supposed to be doing.
The counter magic tutorial was in the first episode, which explained that it reverses the effects of whatever you are countering. It’s a generic skill, so the tooltip isn’t going to help. In this case, it interrupts his shadowstep combo.
How are you supposed to know that if you don’t have time to look at stuff?
Generally just assume that anytime that it comes up on screen, you should use it.
Wow, interesting way to play. Don’t worry that you don’t know what this new thing will do because you don’t have time to figure it out, just press it instead of one of the other things that you know will be useful to your character…
Man, did people raise this big of a ruckus about the severed bleeding wurm head mini that flops after you?
Or the Heart quest involving throwing nets on Baby Dolyaks and likely killing their parent so you can capture them properly. I especially liked the Frog ‘Juicer’ that you threw on bandits so drakes could attack them, or you could kill the drakes for credit.
The amount of exceptional denial people complaining about the fish is pretty ironic.
Anyone who takes a high horse on this is being hypocritical. Enough said.
First, I can’t tell unless I look up close that the wurm mini is severed or bleeding. I frankly didn’t even know that since I don’t have one. And you aren’t surrounded by those hearts all the time.
Second, no one is on a high horse. People are simply expressing their opinion.

No, i’m not saying that. But i wonder how the mesmer in question was build and played to manage to be killed by sneezing at. You have excellent movement on the class, you can control small to medium groups pretty well depending on setup and your defense isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
And you know what? I’m playing possibly the worst setup the current “meta” has to offer
Instead of insulting people, you should try understanding that some people are just inherently better at things than other people. The best gunfighter could kill someone with a BB gun where someone else might have trouble hitting the side of a barn even with practice. That’s true for every skill.
Where did i insult someone? The picture of dying by being sneezed at was used by the other person so i thought it appropriate to use it too.
I wasn’t talking about that comment I was talking about " i wonder how the mesmer in question was build and played".

Well, you can not make the barn even bigger to allow that outlier to hit it. That’s not the point of the game, IMO.
IF (and this is a massive IF) someone is truly SO incapable of improving at something, that person should really do another thing, more accord to their talents.
My comment was a specific response to:
" I’m playing possibly the worst setup the current “meta” has to offer"
Not about the entire game.
I do support the OP idea. But what I thought of when I saw the thread title is an overall Guild Hall makeover kit. Not taking the place of decorations, but a “skin” for the existing elements. It could do things like:
-change the color and texture of the Gilded Hall rocks to be silver, or rose gold, or bronze, or brown, and matte instead of shiny. Different choices for the other hall.
-change the current buildings to be those of a different race or style
-change the current NPCs
etc.
Then of course we could add decorations on top as usual.
Except it’s not dying. That’s what you want to interpret here, when in fact it’s a magical fish that can breathe on land except it has no legs(meaning it needs to flop) and is still a fish so it needs to keep making the same gasping motions it does underwater.
You can certainly decide to view it this way. Personally, when I see a fish flopping around out of water, my instinct is “put it back in the water before it dies!” So constantly seeing a fish flopping out of water irritates me like constantly hearing a baby crying.

They don’t belong in the game’s setting and they break my immersion. Can we please not have any more cosmetic items like this one?
While I feel your pain, there are way too many silly items already and Anet keeps adding them (Shooshadoo). So I sincerely doubt that your wish will come true.
So, you want to police what other can have. I can’t agree with you on that.
Not answering for him, but my answer is that I don’t want to be surrounded by dying fish since I have to see other peoples’ if they have them.
You know what? I too would prefer a “fish in a bubble” pet. In fact, if you were suggesting that they add one and sell it into the gem store, I’d be 100% behind you.
But you’re asking for ANet to change an already existing animation, which I find just disrespectful for those who enjoy this animation. Let them have the Floppy Fish, and let’s ask for a Bubble Fish, not instead, but alongside them.
How is it disrespectful? I question why people enjoy watching a fish dying and having it following them around, but hey they world is full of people whose POV I question. No big news there.
I find this thread very odd … I can’t understand how it appears like the OP associated the evolution of the game with it losing it’s identity, implying that having a game that evolves is a bad thing? Perhaps I haven’t played enough MMO’s but … I’ve yet to play an MMO where the devs don’t tries to change a bit to keep the game interesting to it’s veteran players.
Sure, Anet has made some errors during this evolution but I don’t think this is very relevant; any expectation that Anet just scores homeruns is unreasonable. I wouldn’t want to waste a single minute in a game where a developer would just pump out the same old, just to maintain game identity. Frankly, I think the whole idea that a game’s identity is the sum of it’s content and lore is wrong; it’s identity is how the dev team implements the game and interacts with players.
Change in identity doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but to some of us the change in GW2 is. And sure, many if not most MMOs change over time. Again, some for better and some are disastrous (NGE anyone?). I am someone who agrees that the direction of GW2 through HoT is not good for me. Some of the choices since then are a bit better, so I have hope.
The new mini pet, a Krytan Floppy Fish, is a fish out of water. It has a gasping for air animation and flops around on the ground. The question is, should ANet keep this animation or change it to a swimming animation. On one hand it is only pixels. No animals are being harmed. On the other hand, it’s depicting an animal suffocating and dying. As for myself, while I know it’s not real it does give me an “Ick feeling” as I watched it lie there gasping for air, so I would vote for a change in animation. Your thoughts?
Video of new mini pet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPSJQ6h8LnE
I agree with everything you said. Its not an issue for PETA but it does make me feel bad and I wouldn’t have it as my pet. A swimming fish would be so much more appealing.
I’ve been keeping an eye on this post, and I’ve seen several comments asking for the removal of the penalty box. Unfortunately, that mechanic is intricately involved in the design of the entire instance and removing it is simply not feasible.
That’s unfortunate since apparently the instance-opener being in the penalty box CAUSES some of the bugs.
I noticed a low-level blue staff for sale today for 7K gold while looking at prices for precursers. I would not have had to buy (insert number) of things at a lower price in order to buy that item, so if I were a gold launderer, all I would have to do is email my client once I had the payment and tell him to list something for exhorbitant amounts so I could “buy” it and not raise a flag.
Just sayin….
This is exactly the kind of thing that Anet should have a script to flag.
There are some interesting suggestions here, and I will pass them along today.
I’m sorry for what happened, Doug, but glad you got everything quickly sorted out! Thanks for sharing your observations, and thanks to others for adding their thoughts.
You should have to opt-in for the Billing area to save your information – like email address, etc. I think its terrible that people can have their accounts permanently banned because a hacker used the information found in Billing to use their account for bad things.
Someone used an analogy of a restaurant which added a dish. This is more like a vegetarian restaurant that suddenly decided it’s no longer going to be a vegetarian restaurant. I mean it will continue to serve vegetarian stuff, but it’s going to increasinglyi put meat dishes on the menu.
Sorry, it’s nothing like that. You’re ascribing a morality to a raid-free game that is soiled by adding raids.
It’s fine to say you don’t like raids. It’s fine to say you’re guild doesn’t have the 15+ people interested enough to raid (since RL will prevent some from showing on any given night). It’s even fine to say you don’t think it will ultimately have a positive impact on the community.
But please don’t try to make the argument that raiding is somehow inherently wrong for ANet’s franchise.
It’s a design choice and like any design choice, it has positives and negatives; some will embrace it, some will turn away from it. That would have happened if GW2 hadn’t offered an expac or didn’t add raids; it just would have been a different subset embracing or turning away.
Raids affect the entire game like PvP affects the entire game. GW2 was created with PvP but not the “esports” attitude that Anet has tried to jam down our throats more recently.
I thought I would never get to do the Caladbolg events. Hopefully this will make it possible for me.
All that time spent arguing on the forums, that could’ve been spent improving instead…
Queue: EYE OF THE TIGER.
I can browse the forums at work. I can’t play at work…
To be fair, at the very least, it says that a vocal minority feel passionately that the new zones are too difficult to solo.
In ANet’s shoes, I would take note and start communicatating more clearly that expansions change the game in all sorts of ways and that people need to be ready to adapt.
Yes: “Be warned that we are going to change the game you love into something completely different!”
For the most part Anet didn’t change the existing game. They expanded the totality of what was available. If I map into Orr today, not only is it not completely different, it is largely the same region that I have loved since first encountering it.
When there is an MMO expansion, generally people move into that expansion unless they are creating a new character or for limited time to accomplish some specific thing. This is what I was referring to.
Why would Anet allow people to use a DPS meter that can measure someone else’s DPS? Talk about inviting toxic behavior into the game. Terrible idea brought about by Anet trying to make GW2 into an “Esport”.
Now I find out that the “higher challenge” info tended to be in places that only very dedicated MMO players will look, so no, we should not have known before we bought HoT.
To be more realistic, they said the game was going to be more challenging in the details about the expansion.

The jungle represents a challenge for you to overcome. Creatures within it use our new advanced AI, making the fights you encounter harder, giving you the opportunity to work with your friends and put your abilities to the test in battling Mordremoth’s forces and the deadly inhabitants of the jungle. As you progress your Masteries, you’ll find new ways to move through the map and unlock areas you couldn’t reach previously, as well as new ways to overcome your foes.
For those simply playing the game, ArenaNet has increased the difficulty with every major content update. The difficulty has always been complained about, right from the first beta, or Orr at launch. Only those that started after the new player experience and stopped playing at the end of the personal story would have never known.
Well, at least you found one sentence indicating higher difficulty in a place where many people would reasonably find it. Of course that’s a very long page with only that one sentence…
As for regular increased difficulty, I and many others on the forums agree that HoT was a different order of increase than any other update. And the difficulty is not only encounters but even finding them lol.
It is also different because you are expected to spend a significant portion of your time there in order to get HP for your Specialization. I can run down to Orr, do a couple of things and then go do something else. If I’m working on my Elite Specialization, there really is no other place to reasonably work on HP.
yup it was an expansion, and the expansion content was primarily distributed amongst the new expansion zones, no real surprises there. You weren’t expected to do anything though, you do what you want. That’s why you never hear the vast majority complaining in game, those that enjoy the hot content do it, those that don’t don’t.
I was responding to Healix who was comparing HoT to other added content.
there really is no other place to reasonably work on HP.

If the haters would not hate so much and play HoT instead, maybe they would be having fun with it by now…?
Does eating bugs more often help you to enjoy eating bugs? No? You’re just not eating them often enough.
I don’t know I think vocal minority is a very important concept.
Of course only Anet has any idea whether a POV on the forums is a minority and they aren’t likely to tell us. So anyone making statements on the forums about a POV being a minority doesn’t know what they are talking about.

Yes, it says that 25 people have posted 40 times each and check back frequently to see if they’ve gotten a response.
For accuracy, this topic has 1031 posts by 367 users. Vayne is leading with 78 posts, more than double the next. 281 users have less than 3 posts in this topic, while 15 have more than 10. 218 haven’t posted within the last 90 days, while 31 made their last post in this topic.

Thank you.
To be fair, at the very least, it says that a vocal minority feel passionately that the new zones are too difficult to solo.
In ANet’s shoes, I would take note and start communicatating more clearly that expansions change the game in all sorts of ways and that people need to be ready to adapt.
Yes: “Be warned that we are going to change the game you love into something completely different!” No, I don’t think they’re going to say that to the vast majority of their players. I’m pretty sure that there is a good reason why the more generic areas that people go to get info on HoT (the webpage duh) don’t have even a tiny mention of higher difficulty. They want people to actually buy the expansion.
Can you point out to me where Anet “advertised” to those already playing GW2 that HoT had “increased level of difficulty”? I just looked at the HoT web page out of curiosity and don’t see a single word that even implies it.

Was there only a brief mention?
There were discussions on the forums, in the CDI’s and elsewhere. In addition, as you can see in the blog announcing the first HoT Beta weekend…
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-first-beta-weekend-event-begins-august-7/
“The jungle content is predominantly the same content we showed to a small audience in closed beta testing earlier this year, but it’s more polished. We’ve done a lot of work to balance creature difficulty, and we’ll be looking for your thoughts on the overall experience. Do you feel the need to use your entire skill bar in battles? Does teaming up with other players feel more rewarding? Do you find yourself wanting to change your skills and traits to overcome encounters? Warning—creatures will be more challenging than in the existing Guild Wars 2 world.”
ANet is not the only MMO developer who depends on the penchant of a lot of MMO fans to devour everything the developer says, whether it be in a forum, blog, article on a fan site, etc. The downside of this tendency for fans who don’t follow everything said is that they will miss things. Maybe it would have been better to also say this sort of thing on the HoT web page. However, how many fans didn’t even read that?
From this blog post, you can see that increased creature difficulty was planned long before the 1st public beta. So, they did advertise increased difficulty, they just didn’t do a comprehensive job of it. If you’ve followed the game at all over the years, you would know that ANet does a mediocre to poor job of providing comprehensive information on the game to consumers.
So if you went out of your way to read the blog (I don’t know that I have ever read it since Beta), and if you read the forums (it is common knowledge that around 90% of MMO players don’t), not sure what CDI is (first result on Google: Capacitor discharge ignition)…
I and others made a statement that many players are disappointed in HoT because they liked GW2 as it was and then were unpleasantly surprised when they started HoT. The response was that it was advertised that HoT would be more difficult so why were we surprised. Now I find out that the “higher challenge” info tended to be in places that only very dedicated MMO players will look, so no, we should not have known before we bought HoT.
In the case of GW2, people have been playing core quite happily and suddenly they give us HoT. In that case, players who are upset by this change are not looking in the wrong place for their gaming amusement. They had it all through GW2 as it was initially presented.
They didn’t give us HoT. We had to choose, in light of its advertised increased level of difficulty, to buy it.
Looking at a product advertised as being unlike core GW2 for an experience like core GW2 might be accurately described as, “looking in the wrong place.”
