Is it not possible to finish the Kessex Hills map right now since the tower is on top of the Viathan Lake POI? I was swimming around the tower and died.
I agree with the OP. I didn’t bother to read the thread because I just know there are a bunch of people telling the OP that he’s wrong and this game is actually too easy. But what it comes down to is personal experience and mine is the same as the OP.
I haven’t played the game in about 6 weeks. At the end of Flame & Frost I was very discouraged that I couldn’t see the end of the event because I didn’t want to deal with soloing the instances. I did the one instance to rescue the girl with 2 friends who are both very good players. It was still very difficult. They had already done the other instance.
Add to that the difficulty of the personal story and the environmental stuff as in the OP and I just am not motivated to login. Its really a shame, because I think this game has a lot of potential.
Well, that’s the model Arenanet chose for that game, and it’s quite a shame indeed, a needed shame I guess to not have any monthly payment, but still.
I miss the times where rewards were coming from the implemented gameplay instead of relying on a gambling system which anyway hates me.
Yes, there are plenty of F2P games that do not sell what should be quest rewards in the shop. These other games make plenty of money selling costumes/pets/boosts/etc and don’t need to cheapen their own content by selling quest rewards instead of giving them in-game.
I recognise your goal to create a variety of content to satisfy as many people as possible, which is a good approach in my books. However, do you think that the story completion might be best left to the most accessible of content with a dungeon experience being used as a side story instead?
In general I agree with Turgon – dungeons are extremely difficult for casual players and having a dungeon as a requirement in anything that is essentially a personal story (personal story, living story, etc.) might be a barrier-to-entry for many people. And I like the suggestion to make dungeons optional – people can do them if they like dungeons but are not penalized by not receiving completion on their achievement if they choose not to.
I have not yet reached the end of my Personal Stories because I find just the story part to be too difficult for me. Don’t bother insulting my abilities because if you are the type to do that I don’t care what you have to say.
On the other hand, I found the Wintersday dungeons to be manageable and fun so I can only hope that the F&F dungeon follows in that vein rather than the world dungeons.
this could easily have been avoided by performing an extra calculation for the rankings
total acheivement points = leaderboard position 1
total acheivement points – infinite repeatable = leaderboard position 2and then just have 2 leaderboards, one for everything and one for “official” rankings
or just have the second and leave the total progress viewable on their account.
This^ – I don’t understand why they would actually remove anything when they could have done something like this. Since achievements are important and they are trying to make them more important it doesn’t make ANY sense to remove them or cap them.
I don’t want clothes that I could be wearing in RL. And I REALLY don’t want accessories that a little girl wears in RL. I’m playing a fantasy MMO for a reason.
I also think that we should have clothing “skins” ala LotRO rather than town clothes.
I completely agree with all.
-I don’t understand the “Town Clothes” deal – I don’t spend enough time in town to care.
-I’d rather have cosmetics for my gear that I wear all the time: combat gear
-I don’t get the hoodies. We can wear those in RL, why would we want to wear them in a Fantasy game?
-I don’t get the plush back items. I’m not 7yrs old. If some people do like them that’s great, but why not have back items that appeal to a larger percentage of players?
-Riding clothes? Really?
A lot of MMO players feel the need to “keep up with the Joneses”, but of course characters are always going to be at different points of progression. Even if you only run with a certain group and always run exactly the same content, GW2 has decided that you don’t share in XP – I’m not sure why.
That said, I don’t feel the need to “keep up” but I am affected by the changing dailies. Earlier this week I logged in and looked at the daily list. There weren’t 5 things that I wanted to do so I logged off. Of course I can play without being constrained to doing the dailies, but I have other games that I play as well. So if I’m on the fence I used to feel a certain pressure to do dailies if I could. Now if there is a list of dailies that I don’t want to do, I might just go play something else instead.
I understand that ANet wanted to avoid forcing people into the Trinity roles, but if someone WANTS to play mainly as a healer they shouldn’t be penalized.
I agree, there has to be a better way. I hope this gets fixed soon.
In a PvP situation I can’t begin to understand how they thought that showing less PCs is preferable to showing everything but dumbing down the graphics. Other games have PvP and don’t have this issue. I mean Holy Cow! “Lets make the players they’re supposed to be fighting invisible – that’ll solve the graphics problem.” Really? Really?!
/sign this as well. I know there is a sound, and maybe they made it quiet because people said it was too loud in GW1. But now it is too quiet, so maybe give it a slider in Options.
“Daily” = the limit, not a requirement. If you feel you MUST play a game at all, you are doing it wrong.
As for making them more difficult: first, you can’t include a daily that requires a group. That’s why they took off combos.
TheDaiBish is right: Dailies should be casual friendly and not tied to a particular zone which could cause lag.
Finally, I don’t understand these comments about how achievements are supposed to be difficult. They aren’t in any game I’ve played. As for GW2, isn’t that up to the developers to decide? You say “achievements are supposed to be hard” – well apparently not.
What do you guys think?
I think some of you guys would enjoy video games far more if you’d stop worrying about chasing carrots.
Games are about “chasing carrots” – games have goals.
Yea, its kinda strange since other MMOs have parties share the progression of “quests”. Can’t imagine why they decided to do it this way.
Thank you so much for posting these results. I was just thinking this morning that I hadn’t been playing with the Mystic Forge yet so I should give it a try. Now I see that I would be wasting my time (and resources).
On this topic, I hate the typical MMO RNG. I think that it stinks that some people can try something sometimes hundreds of times and still not acheive the result they are looking for. In the Real World, if you do any kind of crafting you don’t fail hundreds of times. Its just stupid. There should be a point at which you are guaranteed to eventually get what you want – even if it is after 200 tries or whatever. Then at least you would know that you’re not wasting your time and resources.
Yes, for some reason they decided to add some daily options that some people would find difficult to complete (like Combo fields) but to hold off with the ability to choose which dailies you want to complete for some indeterminate number of months, according to a Anet person. (I’ll link if I find the post.)
Seems like it wasn’t well thought-out. If people who can’t do their own combos and who don’t have a ready group to play with (due to time or other factors) end up with terrible RNG so combo fields come up regularly, they won’t be able to complete their dailies for some number of months. Yay.
Throwing snowballs at kids and knocking them over, or becoming a plant dog to play with puppies is what I think about when I think of adult conflict.
As an adult, I have played in the snow with my nephews. Since this is a magical world, I can’t imagine a better way to communicate with dogs that need help than to become one so you can speak their language. I bet vets would love that.
Neither of these events are childish or inappropriate for an adult world.
Here’s the issue, it is tacky to YOU and it could VERY well have been tacky to the person who was given the project to change the affect as well. But, it was not deemed tacky as a whole by everyone. That is where you fail to understand the argument.
I completely understand that rainbow unicorns being tacky is my opinion. I even said so in one of my first posts on this thread. I believe that people have the right to state their opinion without other people accusing them of whining, QQing, throwing tantrums, etc. just because they disagree with their opinion.
I also completely understand that there are people in this game who LOVE rainbow unicorns. And of course they are entitled to state that opinion also.
I don’t think I fail to understand the argument.
Do you even comprehend the example I was trying to state here? He asked me as a graphic designer, would I have put in The Dreamer’s affects into the game He asked for my opinion as a graphic designer. As a graphic designer, no matter what I actually like personally, does not matter. It was an EXAMPLE.
And I don’t think you got that he asked you that because why would a designer create something that is inherently tacky?
Let’s say, I hate the color red. Well because aesthetically, I hate this color, then I shouldn’t put it in the game, because I hate it. That is the logic, you are trying to enforce.
A color is not inherently tacky. How someone uses it might be, but not a color in itself.
People getting so angry, throwing tantrums over a unicorn and rainbows? Really?
…There’s no point in throwing a tantrum about it because you aren’t forced to get the bow or to pay attention to it.
Just curious about your definition of a “tantrum” because, to quote a famous movie: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
Yes, I am a girl gamer, and you just insinuated that because I am a “girly girl” I would automatically get The Dreamer.
Well you ARE visciously attacking anyone who complains about the girly-girl weapons…
An adult woman wearing a ruffly babydoll dress holding a giant lollypop is bizarre.
Also known as cosplay.
What is the purpose of unicorn arrows? Do they run up and impale your enemy? What do the butterflies do? Ooo, scary! I suppose your enemy is laughing so hard at you that they’re rolling around on the ground and thus vulnerable to your other attacks?
Butterflies are normally associated with the Chaos Theory (flapping wings cause hurricanes and all that). Mesmer are to do with chaos. Not to mention Mesmers have the whole theatrical thing going on (in GW, Vassar hung around Foible’s Fair, while Lady Althea hung around this outdoor theater).
As for Unicorns, well, in Medieval times they represented purity and strength. Coat of Arms had them on and everything. Look at the Sigil the Dreamer uses (Purity). Take what you will from that.
I guess it is some kind of tactic to take my comments completely out of context, but I don’t know why.
1. We aren’t talking about Cosplay, we’re talking about an MMO. So…whatever.
2. I was replying to a comment made about magic and fireballs. As I said, fireballs have a purpose – they burn your enemy. What do the unicorns and butterflys do to your enemy? I didn’t ask what they stood for.
What is the purpose of unicorn arrows? Do they run up and impale your enemy? What do the butterflies do?
The purpose is to look good
Just out of curiosity: if you think rainbow unicorns “look good” I’m wondering if you have them on your walls at home. If you don’t, why not?
If you think fireball staffs and giant jagged swords “look good” then why don’t you have any hanging on the walls of your home?
I didn’t say fireball staves “look good”, you brought “look good” into the discussion. As for whether I would put stuff on my walls, we are talking about the effect, not the items. So while I would not put a staff on my wall, I might have an image that has fire in it. I would not have an image that has a rainbow unicorn in it. I don’t want people to think I’m a baby.
The argument isn’t “seriousness” vs. “fun”.
I never said anything about seriousness or fun. Is this the “reply with complete non sequiturs” part of the thread now?
You may have noticed that my post contained more than just a response to you. And that comment was part of a different paragraph than my response to you – that connotes a new subject.
If the graphics of one item makes you want to quit a game, then I say, <snipped inflammatory comment>.
Can you please point me to the posts that say they were going to quit the game? I think I saw 2. The rest of the people are merely expressing their opinion. If you disagree, why not state your case for why you disagree instead of telling people they aren’t allowed to express their opinion?
no you dont have to see them
just delete the game and play something less fun
how can people be so serious about a game if it really is gamebreaking for you simply leave and find another game
this bow is awesome
Hey, I’m just expressing my opinion. But I guess the best some people can do is tell people to leave the game. What if everyone with a difference of opinion left the game as you suggest? I don’t think it would be very good for the game.
What is the purpose of unicorn arrows? Do they run up and impale your enemy? What do the butterflies do?
The purpose is to look good
Just out of curiosity: if you think rainbow unicorns “look good” I’m wondering if you have them on your walls at home. If you don’t, why not?
The argument isn’t “seriousness” vs. “fun”. Rainbow unicorns aren’t “fun”, they are childish. Cake is fun, cake with clowns on it is childish. If I say I don’t want a cake with clowns on it that doesn’t mean that I don’t like cake.
I think that the people defending the “silly” legendaries don’t understand the difference between cute and bizarrely childish. In RL, an adult woman holding a kitten might be seen as “cute”. An adult woman wearing a ruffly babydoll dress holding a giant lollypop is bizarre. That is the difference between Quaggan NPCs and bows that shoot rainbow unicorns.
I don’t mind the humor in this game, but this has gone into the realm of strangeness. Yes, this game has magic. But a fireball is purposeful: it’s a ball of fire that is supposed to burn your enemy. What is the purpose of unicorn arrows? Do they run up and impale your enemy? What do the butterflies do? Ooo, scary! I suppose your enemy is laughing so hard at you that they’re rolling around on the ground and thus vulnerable to your other attacks?
I’m not saying this game should be a grim, realistic game, but it’s a matter of extremes and this is nonsense. People can say “just don’t get one” but I will have to see them around me. I don’t understand why ANet wants their game to be a joke. I really don’t want to be distracted by my laughter while I’m trying to run dungeons, etc.
Wow. Just…wow. I had to do a search to see the images and then I couldn’t believe it myself. I agree that GW2 always had some silliness, but this takes the cake. Warcraft got slammed for the “sparklepony” but at least it’s not all rainbows and kitchy.
What I don’t understand is the in-game mail – why are some people receiving it and some not? I hope this isn’t working as intended. It makes people feel like something is broken.
My guess is that some people purchased items by accident because they assumed that if they could try it on, the item was usable for their character.
Ok, thanks for the answers. I was looking for tips and a lot of articles / posts I saw said that they didn’t reset, that you could leave to repair and come back and their health would be the same. Maybe that was in beta.
I thought a lot of people run this dungeon, but no one knows whether the bosses are supposed to reset to full health or not?
If you think I should post this in my previous thread about this dungeon, it was deleted.
Upon reading up some more on the dungeon, most articles / posts say specifically that the lovers will keep your damage progress if you have to go repair. Yet even though we kept at least one person in the room they reset to full health over and over. Did ANet change the dungeon (does this happen to everyone) or were we bugged?
Nente also reset several times.
It especially doesn’t make sense to punish the use of something that is likely to be purchased from the store. People will simply stop using the transmute stones which will cost ANet money. Not smart. They should fix this bug (benefit of the doubt) ASAP.
And thanks to the OP for the heads-up.
Thanks for all the comments. I don’t use the mouse to move, I use either arrows or WASD. My biggest issue is simply distance. Sometimes the gap you have to jump is just a bit too big for me and I can never get it. I know its the correct path as I look at how-to videos. That’s why I was looking for some kind of boost.
My character hadn’t got to puzzles where I’m under any form of pressure to complete. They are just basic puzzles but I still have a hard time with some.
So, I’m terrible at jumping in games. If I’m in a game that has Jumping I always buff my Jump skill up a lot to have a better chance. But in GW2 I was surprised that with Jumping being such a huge part of the game there is no Jump skill to buff.
Is there any way besides speed boosts to buff yourself to jump better? Are there better speed boosts or are all of them essentially the same?
Thanks in advance for any help.
As someone pointed out: less than 3 months and they have flushed their “manifesto” down the toilet.
Anet are like politicians: promising anything and everything to get people to “vote” for them (with their wallet) and then not living up to their promises once in office.
People who pay attention to the forums notice when threads are deleted and which threads those are. The game management get a reputation for fixing their problems by stopping people talking about them instead of actually fixing the problems…
And if players want the gear check so that they have a reason to keep going as far as they can in a specific game mode? Screw them right?
Please explain how having a gear check helps players do anything. Without gear checks you can do all the content. With gear checks some people can’t do all the content.
Seems to me if people want gear checks it is only so they can say “I’m better than you”.
ANet already did this in a previous game. It was called Spectral Agony. People absolutely hated it. It required people to do a rather difficult dungeon in order to infuse one piece of gear (had to do this 5 times over all) to protect you from an insta-gib attack that all Mursaat enemies did. Eventually ANet compromised and made it so it would infuse all your armor instead of just once piece. Then they never used that mechanic again until now.
ANet doesn’t even learn from their own mistakes it seems. Or perhaps its Nexon/NCSofts meddling. Either way, whoever is in charge of these decisions hasn’t done any kind of research.
Maybe the original GW1 developer who thought up Spectral Agony was hot for a chance to “do it right”. But whatever the situation, it seems like a terrible decision again.
I haven’t played LotRO, and I’m sure others here haven’t, either. Can you elaborate on what happened?
Sure, hoping to avoid the TL;DR by providing the link
Basically, LotRO introduced a new mechanic that you needed Radiance to counter. If you didn’t have Radiance on your gear (it was only a gear attribute), you literally could not do certain content. In addition, only a limited number of quests dropped this gear. It was not available in a random drop.
The players overall hated it. Sure, certain powergaming grinders didn’t care, but LotRO isn’t exactly a hardcore game. The devs ended up removing the entire mechanic to satisfy their players.
This is a personal theory. There is strong evidence backing it, but its still a theory…
Before launch, and the details of the cash-shop were released, Nexon purchased a large number of shares in NCSoft. Not long after that purchase it was announced that Crystin Cox from Nexon was joining the ArenaNet team to work on the cash-shop.
<snip>
The writing is on the wall. This lady produced Maple Story. You can take a look at Maple Story’s cash shop online. It’s nothing but different tiers of mystery chest. What have we had in the cash shop since launch? Mystery chests, followed by more mystery chests for events, and even more mystery chests for content releases…
Hmm…interesting theory. You might just have something.
I think its a shame that sometimes MMO developers don’t “learn from history”.
ANet, LotRO did a similar thing in their game and there was such player protest that they ended up removing it:
http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/devdiaries/1043-update-2-radiance-removal-developer-diary
If you haven’t heard of this event, from the level of outrage on the forums perhaps you should start reading up…
Ok, thanks for the info!
So I logged in today and saw a character creating the Mad King’s Laughing Pumpkin symbol above his head. How do you get this ability?
On the 2nd run of Ascend the Madness tho, sure thing, I’m grouped with 3 members from the same guild and right before we finish the final part of the Mad King us other 2 are kicked from the group.
It appears that it’s primarily guild people who this, so they can get other people to do the work, then kick you and invite their fellow guild members to come grab the no effort loot.
In other MMOs you can’t kick party members once they’ve entered a dungeon to avoid exactly this type of behavior.
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one. I agree that changing the start point would help.
Now that the event has been out for a while, the respawn in the labyrinth is way too fast. I understand they wanted to have enough mobs for when there were huge numbers of people in there, but maybe they should detect how many characters are in one area and spawn mobs accordingly.
I went in a couple of minutes ago and was the only one in the area. So I started by pulling one skelly but that caused the spawning of 2 more. And it took me a while to kill them so another one spawned… I couldn’t even make it out of the start area!
Eventually a few more people came in and we started in together. We made it as far as the first intersection with the two large Candy Corn Elementals but got overwhelmed because we didn’t take them down fast enough and I died.
So basically, if you’re a lower level character yes you get bumped up to 80 but you don’t really have the stats to take down stuff fast enough to not get overwhelmed unless you have a large enough group.
